Japan’s demographic crisis is reaching critical levels as official government data reveals that nearly one in every four men and one in seven women remain unmarried by age 50. According to a landmark report from the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research, the proportion of never-married 50-year-olds hit a record high. Experts attribute the surging trend to declining social pressure and widespread financial insecurity, driven by an increase in non-permanent, unstable jobs. With marriage rates plummeting, Japan faces severe challenges as its fertility rate drops further, threatening future economic productivity and straining national healthcare systems.

A 72-year-old South Korean man in Japan has been arrested for reportedly overstaying his visa by more than 26 years after police received a tip in June, Shizuoka Prefectural Police confirmed on Thursday (August 27). The man arrested on Wednesday came to Japan in September 1993 using his brother's passport on a 15-day tourist visa to get a higher-paying job in the country, police said. The suspect, a resident of Yaizu in Shizuoka Prefecture, is believed to have been living in Japan without proper status since 1993. At the time, overstaying a visa carried no criminal penalty; that only changed when an amended immigration law came into force in February 2000. As a result, police based his arrest on unlawful overstaying dating from that point forward rather than from when he first arrived. Also read: US-Canada trade war: Canada hits back as Trump orders Lake Ontario renamed ‘Lake America’ He reportedly told investigators he had been supporting himself through casual daily labour, and he has admitted to the offence. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has unveiled plans to construct a missile shelter in an underground parking facility near Tokyo Station. This move comes at a time when North Korea has accelerated its missile testing, and China continues to expand its arsenal of advanced weaponry. Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike stated that the chosen site, a parking garage beneath Yaesu Dori Avenue, which runs from Tokyo Station, was expected to be "highly effective" in safeguarding people. “This area was chosen because it is close to Tokyo Station, the gateway to the capital, and is an area where many people gather outdoors,” Koike said. “We selected it because the facility renovations are expected to be highly effective," Koike added. Also read: Top US general warns Iran war could backfire, seeks off ramp: Report
Special doors
The parking lot is situated on the first and second basement levels beneath Yaesu-dori Avenue with a total floor area of about 13,000 square meters. Japan has marked the 81st anniversary of the Hiroshima atomic bombing, with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba reaffirming the country's commitment to its long-standing non-nuclear principles.

Thousands gathered at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park to honor the victims of the world's first atomic bombing on August 6, 1945. During the ceremony, Japan pledged to continue supporting global nuclear disarmament while maintaining its commitment to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The commemoration comes as Japan undertakes its largest military buildup since World War II, citing growing regional security challenges from China, North Korea, and closer Russia-China-North Korea cooperation. The country recently conducted its first live-fire test of a U.S.-made Tomahawk cruise missile, highlighting its expanding conventional defense capabilities.

Why are Japanese men getting slammed online?
Photos of men combing the stands with trash bags in hand sparked a backlash online, drawing widespread criticism rather than praise. The reason? Many of the men who diligently clean up in front of the cameras at stadiums are seen as leaving most of the housework to their wives or partners at home.

Putting the spotlight on the gender inequality still prevalent in Japan, a poster on X called out these men. Japanese men "spend among the least time on housework internationally," the poster text read. "Please share unpaid care work at home. Start with respect—at home," it added.

Yet, despite this cultural emphasis, Japanese men still rank among the lowest in advanced economies when it comes to housework and caregiving.According to 2021 data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Japanese women spend more than three hours per day on unpaid work, i.e, over five times as much as men, who average just 47 minutes a day. The gap is even wider in young families. A 2021 government survey found that in dual-income households with children under six, women spend more than seven hours a day on household chores, while men spend less than two.The viral debate around World Cup stadium clean-ups has therefore become about much more than football etiquette. For many Japanese women, it has cast an uncomfortable spotlight on the unequal division of labour at home, and raised fresh calls for men to match their public image of responsibility with everyday actions behind closed doors.

Japanese mayor Shoko Kawata's decision to go on maternity leave has left people of the country shocked. While this is common among women in most other countries, in Japan, a mayor has never taken such a break from duties. This has led to a nationwide debate and even opinion polls discussing whether it is feasible for a mayor to be out of office for such a long time. Kawata revealed her decision in May, and on Monday, told the assembly that her deputy was capable of running things smoothly while she was away. Despite the reactions to her decision, Kawata stands by it, saying that giving birth is different for men and women, as their bodies are so impacted that they just cannot continue to work right after having a baby. Meanwhile, she found support in an editorial in the Mainichi newspaper, which called on the organisation to create an environment where "people can take that leave as a matter of course." The Tōhoku earthquake that struck off the coast of Japan in 2011 significantly shifted some parts of the country from their current place, a study has found. This is the first time that an earthquake jolted a country into changing its position. A new analysis shows that at least one seismic wave from the massive earthquake was so intense that it travelled 2,900 kilometres inside Earth, to the boundary between Earth's mantle and liquid outer core, and shot upwards. GPS observations showed that Japan had shifted to the east by up to 5 to 6 millimetres. Seismologists think that this reflected wave was responsible for the movement. The findings have been published in Science. The Tōhoku earthquake triggered a massive tsunami and killed thousands. It remains one of the most studied natural disasters. The researchers studied the ScS signal, or the wave that returned from deep inside Earth, and was recorded by Japan's GNSS Earth Observation Network System (GEONET).
GPS stations shifted after 2011 earthquake
They found that some GPS stations in Japan were not in their original position and had shifted slightly eastward. Ideally, after an earthquake, the ground returns to its starting position. So the researchers believed it to be a glitch and tried correcting the data. A seismic wave travelled inside Earth, bounced back and slammed into the faults that were already shaking from the 9-magnitude earthquake. This triggered portions of Japan to shift from their place permanently, scientists say.

The Tōhoku earthquake that struck off the coast of Japan in 2011 significantly shifted some parts of the country from their current place, a study has found. GPS stations shifted after 2011 earthquake They found that some GPS stations in Japan were not in their original position and had shifted slightly eastward. Ideally, after an earthquake, the ground returns to its starting position. So the researchers believed it to be a glitch and tried correcting the data. A Japanese company making ferocious-looking "Monster wolf" robots is in high demand to scare off bears in Japan after several fatal bear attacks on humans last year. The designed robot is an animatronic scarecrow with flashing red eyes that howls and growls threateningly to scare away wild animals. The Hokkaido-based company, Ohta Seiki, that makes the devices, has already received nearly 50 orders in 2026, more than the firm usually receives in an entire year. "We make them by hand. We cannot make them fast enough now. We are asking our customers to wait two to three months," company president Yuji Ohta told AFP. "Awareness of bear safety and measures against wildlife damage (on farm products) improved. There was also a growing recognition that our product is effective in dealing with bears," Ohta said, adding that most orders are coming from farmers, golf course operators and people who work outdoors in rural regions. Bears were responsible for 13 deaths across Japan during 2025–2026, more than double the previous record, while over 200 others were injured. Last week, authorities confirmed the first fatal bear attack of 2026, along with two other suspected deadly incidents.
Terror of bears across the city
Official figures show that more than 50,000 bear sightings were reported across the country, more than twice the previous record set two years earlier. Bears were spotted on airport runways, golf courses, near schools, and even around supermarkets and hot spring resorts, triggering near-daily concern. The number of bears captured and subsequently culled also surged, nearly tripling from the previous year to 14,601, setting a new all-time record. Local media confirmed that several northern regions also reported more than four times as many bear sightings in April compared with the same period last year, as the animals emerge from hibernation. Scientists attribute the rise in attacks to the rapidly growing numbers of bears, combined with a falling human population, particularly in rural areas. Japan bid a tearful farewell to its last two giant pandas, twins Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei, on Monday (Jan 26), as they prepared for their return to China. Massive crowds gathered at Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo to catch a final glimpse of the beloved creatures before their scheduled departure on Tuesday. In videos circulating on social media, zoo staff and emotional visitors can be seen in tears as they say goodbye to the twins, whose departure marks the first time in over 50 years that Japan will be without any giant pandas.

The two pandas at a Tokyo Zoo are set to return to their homeland, China, on Tuesday. This will be the first time since 1972 that Japan will be left without the beloved animals. Propects of their replacement remain thin owing to the strain in ties between Tokoyo and Beijing. The twins Xiao and Lei Lei, who were born in 2021 at the Uno Ueno Zoological Gardens in Tokyo, became favourites among visitors. However, they remain on loan from China and have to be returned amid strained ties between the two countries over geopolitical tensions as Beijing ramps up pressure on Taiwan. Loaned under China’s “panda diplomacy” programme, the distinctive black-and-white animals have long symbolised friendship between Beijing and Tokyo since the two countries normalised diplomatic relations in 1972. Also Read: Will X get banned in the EU? The practice involves loaning the animals abroad as symbols of goodwill and soft power. The practice gained prominence after 1972, following the normalisation of ties with the US and Japan. The pandas remain Chinese property and are recalled when contracts end, with several returning from the US, Finland, and France.

At Japan's Adventure World amusement park in the Wakayama prefecture, staff members are dressing up as pandas after they lost the last four that were returned to China. It is a way to keep the memory of having pandas alive and also to ensure that the visitors coming to the zoo remain engaged. Four pandas, the 24-year-old Rauhin and her offspring, Yuihin, Saihin and Fuhin, returned to China in June last year. The park housed pandas in its enclosures for 31 years. Rauhin was also the first panda to be born and raised in Japan. The pandas may have gone, but the zoo has kept all its arrangements in place, even though it isn't clear whether it will ever get more pandas from China. Meanwhile, it has started certain activities to keep the visitors engaged. The park has gotten four staff members to dress up as pandas while letting visitors act as their instructors and handlers. Japan is reportedly preparing for a major overhaul of its foreign labour policies. The changes would balance a desperate need for workers with growing public concern over immigration, suggest reports. Japan has been shaken by yet another strong earthquake, a 5.9 magnitude tremor recorded on Wednesday (December 10), its third in as many days. On Japan’s seismic scale, the quake measured 5.9. Authorities confirmed that no tsunami alert was issued. The latest quake was felt most strongly across eastern Aomori and parts of Hokkaido, striking at a depth of roughly 30 kilometers. This follows a powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake on Monday and a 6.7-magnitude jolt reported in Honcho on Tuesday. Japan hit by earthquake of magnitude of 5.9 after strong tremors for third straight day

Tetsuya Yamagami, 45, has admitted guilt in the murder of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during the first day of his trial. Speaking in Tokyo, he confirmed to the court that “everything is true”, referring to his actions on July 8, 2022. Yamagami used a homemade firearm to kill Abe at a campaign event in Nara, a shocking act that deeply affected Japan and the world. Abe, known for his aggressive foreign policy stance and economic reforms called “Abenomics”, was shot multiple times and succumbed to his injuries later that day. The assassination led to scrutiny of Abe's connections with the Unification Church, often referred to as the ‘Moonies’, a religious group Yamagami claims contributed to his mother's financial ruin. He accused the church, which his mother supported with substantial donations, of bankrupting his family to the tune of 100 million yen (approximately $660,000).
Trump meets Ms Abe

As a result of this, investigations into the church have unfolded, with revelations reaching back to South Korea, its country of origin. Several Japanese government officials resigned over the connections. In March 2023, a Tokyo court ordered the church's dissolution, revoking its tax-exempt status and mandating liquidation of its assets. Also Read: Amazon layoffs: E-commerce giant to cut 30,000 jobs as AI and cost-cutting measures take hold Despite her son's actions, Yamagami's mother has reportedly remained unwavering in her faith, even saying that her belief in the church has only grown stronger following the tragedy, according to Japanese media. While Yamagami has confessed to the assassination, he denies charges related to violations of Japan’s strict gun control laws. His defense argues that the homemade firearm he used doesn't technically qualify as an illegal weapon. The trial, expected to continue until January 2024, has drawn further attention to Japan's already stringent gun laws, which have been tightened since the incident.

In a surprising turn of events in the political history of Japan, Sanae Takaichi, a conservative veteran long linked with the right wing, was elected as the first female prime minister of the nation on Tuesday. She ended nearly eight decades of uninterrupted male leadership in Japan. The 64-year-old Takaichi won the election after she received 237 votes in the 465-member Lower House and succeeded Shigeru Ishiba, who resigned last month after the electoral setbacks of his party. Her appointment was confirmed by the Upper House and paved the way for her swearing-in as the 104th prime minister of Japan.
Sanae Takaichi's background and political career
Sanae Takaichi was born in Nara Prefecture in 1961 and graduated from Kobe University. Her father was an office worker and her mother a police officer. The background of Takaichi is more modest than compared of several senior LDP members, who often hail from elite institutions such as the University of Tokyo or Harvard Kennedy School. Politics was far from her early life as she was a passionate heavy metal drummer, known for breaking drumsticks mid-performance and always carrying spares. She also enjoyed scuba diving and cars; her cherished Toyota Supra is now showcased in a Nara museum, according to a report in the BBC. Before stepping into politics, Takaichi briefly worked as a television presenter. Her political awakening came in the 1980s, amid tense US-Japan trade relations. Seeking to grasp how Americans viewed Japan, she joined the office of Democratic congresswoman Patricia Schroeder, a vocal critic of Japan at the time. After Takaichi witnessed mixing up Japanese, Chinese and Korean languages and cuisine, as well as observing Japan being often grouped together with China and South Korea, she fought her first parliamentary election in 1992 as an independent but lost. Later, she won a seat a year later and joined the LDP in 1996. Since then, she has been continuously elected as an MP 10 times, losing only once. Japan’s economy grew faster than expected in the second quarter of 2025, with gross domestic product (GDP) expanding 1 per cent on an annualised basis, government data showed on August 15. The reading, well above the median market forecast of 0.4 per cent, marked the country’s fifth consecutive quarter of growth and came despite fresh US trade barriers. On a quarterly basis, GDP rose 0.3 per cent from the previous three months, exceeding expectations for a 0.1 per cent increase. The first quarter’s performance was also revised up, showing 0.6 per cent growth instead of a previously reported 0.2 per cent contraction. The stronger-than-expected figures were driven by resilient exports and robust capital expenditure, which climbed 1.3 per cent in April-June versus a 0.5 per cent rise anticipated in a Reuters poll. Private consumption, which accounts for more than half of Japan’s economic output, rose 0.2 per cent, matching the previous quarter’s pace and beating forecasts for 0.1 per cent. Net exports contributed 0.3 percentage points to GDP, a sharp turnaround from a 0.8-point drag in the January-March period.
Tariff impact yet to be fully felt
Economists caution that the Q2 numbers may mask the longer-term impact of US tariffs. In April, Washington imposed 25 per cent duties on Japanese automobiles and auto parts, later lowering them to 15 per cent in July as part of a trade deal that also involved a $550 billion Japanese investment package in the US. Japanese automakers, who account for nearly 30 per cent of the country’s exports, have so far absorbed higher tariff costs by cutting prices for US customers, but analysts expect they will begin passing on costs in the months ahead, potentially dampening demand. The government recently cut its growth forecast for the current fiscal year to 0.7 per cent from 1.2 per cent, citing weaker capital spending and persistent inflation.
Bank of Japan rate hike expectations rise
The economic resilience could bolster the case for the Bank of Japan (BOJ) to resume interest rate hikes later this year, particularly as wage growth and consumption trends remain under close watch. The BOJ recently upgraded its fiscal 2025 growth forecast to 0.6 per cent, up from 0.5 per cent, but warned that slowing overseas economies and declining corporate profits could weigh on momentum.Despite the caution, financial markets welcomed the data. The benchmark Nikkei 225 rose 0.59 per cent on August 15, while the yen edged 0.1 per cent higher to 147.6 per dollar. (With inputs from agencies)

Elon Musk recently sounded an ominous, chilling warning for Japan. The tech tycoon warned that Japan's severe population decline might lead to the company losing "almost a million people this year". On X, the former DOGE chief had previously warned that without a higher birthrate, Japan would "eventually cease to exist". On Friday (Aug 8), he said that the nation's demographic decline was "inevitably set in motion half a century ago" and touted artificial intelligence as the "only hope for turning this around".
What's happening in Japan?
Musk made the chilling prediction while sharing a World of Statistics post that said, “Japan's population falling with 900,000 more deaths than births in 2024.” Official data from Japan's Ministry of Health shows 686,061 births and 1,605,298 deaths in 2024, a net decline of about 919,000 people.

The nation's population continues to shrink due to low birth rates and ageing. Currently, Japan's birth rate stands at 1.26. One user told Musk's AI Grok to confirm the data and asked, "How many kids do we need to produce so that humanity survives?" To this, the AI assistant replied that "to sustain humanity without population decline", the United Nations recommends that the global population must maintain an average of 2.1 children per woman. It added that "Current projections show it dipping below this by 2040-2050 in most regions, risking collapse unless AI, longevity tech, or policies reverse the trend."Japan's birth rate has plummeted for the fourteenth straight year, reports Global Statistics, Japan's population change.
Is Musk's post just an ad for AI?
Musk's tweet has set off a flood of sarcasm and anger, with people asking what the point is behind this tweet, to others pointing out that the X owner's post was just him "trying to sell a product". Slamming Musk, one user said that AI was not going to fix the issues. "You’re just trying to sell a product. People need to be able to afford to live. But if people can’t afford a home, they ain't having kids. FFS people DESERVE a liveable wage, not to be exploited and then told some other SHITTY product is the answer to their problems."Another user telling off Musk said that billionaires like him were "the reason why people don't want to have kids. When you hold all the wealth and they can't afford it, they choose to have a life they can afford.".
