New Delhi: Japan has invited Indian civil servants under the Japanese Government’s grant aid program, the “Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship”, commonly known as JDS, for a master's program. The batch of around 10 civil servants, from India’s key administrative services such as the IAS, IRS, IRSE, and ITS, was given a send-off at the Japanese embassy earlier today. From August, they will begin their two-year master’s programs at leading Japanese universities, including the University of Tokyo, Waseda University, Hitotsubashi University, and Kobe University. The Japanese ambassador to India, Ono Keiichi, speaking to WION, said, "They will become a bridge between Japan and India. The Indian workers, through this institutional framework, can go to Japan, but need to have skills, including Japanese language skills. The pact is to get Indian workers in 14 sectors, including aviation, agriculture, fisheries, etc. Approximately 51,000 Indian nationals live in Japan, making them the third-largest South Asian group after Nepalis and Burmese.

Months after an earthquake of magnitude 7.7 jolted Myanmar's Sagaing on March 28, 2025, claiming over 5000 lives, another massive earthquake of magnitude 8.8 struck off Russia's far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday (July 30). Later, the powerful quake prompted a tsunami warning in the Pacific Ocean, which triggered evacuations across Russia, Japan, and Hawaii. After the major-to-minor earthquake in the recent past, you might be wondering which countries are frequently hit by massive earthquakes. As you know, when the quake hits, it reshapes landscapes, infrastructure, economies, and lives in seconds. Numerous Asian countries are highly prone to earthquakes. China and Indonesia are experiencing the most seismic activity, and when looked at in relative terms, Japan records the highest number of earthquakes globally. Based on seismic records and NOAA’s data, here is the list of the top 10 countries frequently hit by major earthquakes over the last three decades.
10. Afghanistan
Afghanistan has secured the 10th spot across the world after it endured repeated earthquakes, particularly in its northeastern and central provinces. The Hindu Kush region is a hotspot for seismic and tectonic activity due to the collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates.
9. Mexico
Like many living organisms nestled within the fiery embrace of the Pacific Ocean's Ring of Fire, Mexico has a deep connection with earthquakes. The land is in the range of shifting tectonic plates, making earthquakes frequent in the region.
8. Philippines
With a total of 553 earthquakes and 55 major earthquakes, the Philippines places 8th. This land regularly experiences strong earthquakes due to the Philippine Sea Plate’s interaction with the Eurasian Plate. The most devastating earthquake on this land was in 1990, when Luzon Island was hit by a 7.7 magnitude quake, claiming the lives of 2,412 people.
7. India
India ranks 7th, as the northeast and Himalayan belt are highly earthquake-prone due to continuous seismic activity and tectonic collision with the Eurasian Plate. The 2001 Gujarat earthquake was one of the most devastating earthquakes, which claimed over 20,000 lives.
6. Turkey
Turkey holds the 6th spot in terms of the most earthquakes, as it lies along the North Anatolian Fault, a major east-west fault line that has produced multiple deadly quakes. The 1999 İzmit and the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes are among the most destructive in history. According to official figures, at least 18,373 people died and 48,901 people were injured during the 1999 İzmit earthquake, and the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes claimed over 50,000 lives.
5. United States
The US witnessed the most seismic activity in California and Alaska. The San Andreas Fault is quite popular for coming up with destructive quakes, and Alaska also experiences some of the strongest earthquakes in North America. From 1990 to 2024, the US has experienced a total of 78 massive earthquakes, claiming several lives.
4. Japan
Japan also faces some of the strongest tremors in the world. It is located squarely on the Ring of Fire, which prompts frequent earthquakes. The massive and hazardous quakes on this land include the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, which killed at least 20,000 people. The region has witnessed a total of 98 major earthquakes as of 2024.
3. Iran
Due to its location at the collision zone between the Arabian and Eurasian tectonic plates, Iran is highly prone to earthquakes, securing at 3rd spot. The massive quakes in cities such as Bam in 2003 and Manjil-Rudbar in 1990 have devastated them, claiming several lives and destroying major infrastructure.
2. Indonesia
Indonesia is the most seismically active nation in the world, as it is also situated in the Pacific Ring of Fire, which has been hit by around 1000 earthquakes and 166 massive earthquakes since 1990. The 2004 Sumatra quake and tsunami remain one of the deadliest disasters across the world, as it claimed the lives of over 2 lakh people.
1. China
China tops the list with a total of 186 powerful earthquakes since 1990. Its western and southwestern regions, especially along the Longmenshan and Himalayan fault lines, are a highly seismic zone. The Sichuan earthquake in 2008 and the Tangshan quake in 1976 caused massive loss of life and infrastructure damage.

'Scary to even fall asleep': Panic grips citizens after Japan's southern islands hit by over 1600 earthquakes in three weeks

As Japan’s tourism industry entered 2025 on a historic high, with record-breaking visitor numbers and a global spotlight on its cultural allure, it faced an unexpected challenge this summer. Not from a natural disaster, not from geopolitical tension, but from a decades-old manga. A graphic novel titled Watashi ga Mita Mirai (The Future I Saw), first published in 1999 by elusive Japanese artist Ryo Tatsuki, has caused a sudden and significant drop in travel bookings to Japan, thanks to a viral “prediction” of a massive earthquake set to strike on July 5, 2025.
A fictional forecast fuels real fears
The manga gained renewed attention earlier this year when readers unearthed its eerily specific prophecy: a major quake, a deep crack forming beneath the seabed between Japan and the Philippines, and a tsunami with waves “three times” taller than those in the devastating 2011 disaster. The unsettling imagery, paired with the fact that the original edition appeared to foreshadow the Fukushima earthquake and nuclear crisis, quickly spiralled into viral anxiety, especially in Hong Kong.Social media platforms lit up with clips, screenshots, and dramatised readings of the manga. TikTok creators warned their followers against travelling to Japan in July. Conspiracy forums debated whether Tatsuki was a misunderstood prophet. In Hong Kong, where the manga’s re-release has found a cult-like following, travel agents reported a wave of cancellations and hesitations. The data backs the hysteria: Flight bookings from Hong Kong to Japan have dropped by nearly 50 per cent year-on-year, according to ForwardKeys. Between late June and early July alone, reservations plummeted by 83 per cent. Travel agencies like EGL Tours have slashed prices and even offered earthquake insurance, but to little effect. Airlines such as Greater Bay Airlines have responded by suspending flights to Japanese destinations like Tokushima due to the dramatic fall in demand.
Expert rebuttals and an author’s clarification
Scientists and seismologists have been quick to debunk the panic. Professor Robert Geller, a veteran seismologist from the University of Tokyo, told Travel and Tour World that earthquake prediction, even when backed by decades of research, is not scientifically possible. “There is no reliable way to predict when or where a major earthquake will strike,” Geller said.Japan, which sits on the volatile Pacific Ring of Fire, experiences thousands of small quakes every year. The recent uptick of tremors, with over 900 recorded in the Kyushu region, has added fuel to the speculative fire, despite most being minor. In an attempt to quiet the frenzy, Tatsuki herself stepped into the conversation. In interviews with Japanese outlet Mainichi Shimbun and The Guardian, she clarified that The Future I Saw was never intended as a prophecy. “I’m not a prophet,” Tatsuki said. “My work is meant to raise awareness and encourage preparedness, not fear.”But her comments have done little to stop the runaway panic. In the age of viral misinformation, even a fictional account can be interpreted as a chilling prediction.
A temporary tremor in Japan’s tourism story?
The timing couldn’t be worse. Japan had just begun enjoying a full rebound in international tourism following years of pandemic-related travel restrictions. In April 2025, the country welcomed a record 3.9 million visitors, driven by its springtime beauty, cultural experiences, and culinary wonders. But as July approaches, many travellers are hitting pause.Industry experts believe that the fallout, though sharp, will be short-lived. Japan’s tourism agencies said they have seen similar viral trends before, the situations create momentary dips, but the appeal of Japan usually prevails.Whether tourism rebounds quickly or takes longer to recover, The Future I Saw incident stands as a compelling case study in how online narratives, no matter how fictional, can have tangible, global consequences. For now, July 5 is just a date on the calendar. But for Japan's tourism sector, it marks a moment when art, anxiety, and algorithmic amplification collided, rewriting the travel plans of thousands.

Expert rebuttals and an author’s clarification Scientists and seismologists have been quick to debunk the panic. Professor Robert Geller, a veteran seismologist from the University of Tokyo, told Travel and Tour World that earthquake prediction, even when backed by decades of research, is not scientifically possible. “There is no reliable way to predict when or where a major earthquake will strike,” Geller said. Japan, which sits on the volatile Pacific Ring of Fire, experiences thousands of small quakes every year. “My work is meant to raise awareness and encourage preparedness, not fear.” But her comments have done little to stop the runaway panic. But as July approaches, many travellers are hitting pause. Industry experts believe that the fallout, though sharp, will be short-lived. Japan’s tourism agencies said they have seen similar viral trends before, the situations create momentary dips, but the appeal of Japan usually prevails. Whether tourism rebounds quickly or takes longer to recover, The Future I Saw incident stands as a compelling case study in how online narratives, no matter how fictional, can have tangible, global consequences. For now, July 5 is just a date on the calendar. But for Japan's tourism sector, it marks a moment when art, anxiety, and algorithmic amplification collided, rewriting the travel plans of thousands.

Panic ensued on a Japan Airlines Boeing 737 on Monday when the plane suddenly plummeted nearly 26,000 feet. The scary episode apparently led passengers to write goodbye letters to loved ones and details of their finances, fearing they would not survive. People on the plane recalled that there was a boom, and after that, oxygen masks fell off within a few seconds. The flight attendants started shouting, asking everyone to put on their oxygen masks. The incident comes after 241 people died in the Air India crash in Ahmedabad, which involved a Boeing Dreamliner 787. According to local reports, flight JL8696, travelling from Shanghai Pudong Airport in China to Tokyo’s Narita Airport, experienced a serious mechanical failure mid-air. This led the plane to descend from 36,000 feet to just over 10,000 feet in under ten minutes. The captain declared an emergency, after which the flight was diverted to the nearest airport, the International Airport in Osaka. The plane landed safely at 8:50 pm local time. Passengers were asleep on the plane when the plane's sudden movement woke them up. It said that the aircraft’s pressurisation system triggered an emergency alert after the plane dropped several feet. Oxygen masks immediately dropped, and it was chaos on the plane. Some people were unable to breathe, and the crew feared they could pass out. A passenger told The People, “I heard a muffled boom, and the oxygen mask fell off in a few seconds. The stewardess cried and shouted to put on the oxygen mask, saying the plane had a malfunction." Rice, a staple in Japan and an integral part of the country’s culture, tradition and politics, has turned into a pain point for the nation. A rice crisis has gripped the nation for nearly a year with soaring prices and empty supermarket shelves, but it is showing tentative signs of easing. New data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries revealed that average rice prices fell below the psychologically significant 4,000-yen mark for the first time since early March, offering hope to consumers long frustrated by the soaring cost of a dietary staple. According to the ministry, a five-kilogram bag of rice sold for an average of 3,920 yen ($27.03) during the week ending June 15, a 256-yen drop from the previous week. This marks the first time in over three months that prices have entered the 3,000-yen range, a goal Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba had pledged to achieve by the end of June. “This drop is a result of the government’s clear intervention and strategic release of rice reserves,” said Farm Minister Shinjiro Koizumi. Blended rice, which includes rice from government stockpiles, now accounts for half of the market share, up 6 percentage points, helping stabilise supply. Retailers have also started offering imported rice from countries like the US and South Korea. Supermarket chain Aeon began selling California-sourced rice in early June, while South Korean firm The O Global signed a deal to export 200 tonnes of rice, the largest ever by a South Korean private company, to Japan. Still, the recovery remains uneven. Smaller stores around Tokyo continue to report shortages, while some chains and regional outlets have resumed regular stock levels. The situation worsened as demand surged, in part due to increased tourism and a rise in rice consumption spurred by rising prices of bread and noodles amid the global wheat crisis following the Russia-Ukraine war. Public anxiety spiked further in mid-2024 after a widely circulated warning about a potential “megaquake” led to nationwide panic buying. The top-tier “Koshihikari” brand began selling rice for nearly 5,000 yen ($35) per 5 kg, and the average household faced prices nearly double those seen the year before. At one point, rice stockpiles at commercial wholesalers dipped 400,000 tonnes below 2023 levels, hitting a record low of 1.53 million tonnes. Making matters worse was the government’s delayed release of emergency reserves and structural inefficiencies in Japan’s rice supply chain. The powerful Japan Agricultural Cooperatives (JA), which dominate rice sales, were caught off guard by the crisis. Meanwhile, the government has faced criticism for failing to track stock levels accurately due to a growing share of rice being sold outside traditional JA channels. US Steel and Japan’s Nippon Steel on Monday (Jan 6) filed lawsuits against the government of Joe Biden for his blocking of a merger deal worth up to 14 billion US dollars, multiple American media networks reported. New York Times reported that the lawsuit was filed in a federal court in Washington, accusing Biden and some officials in his administration of 'corrupting the review process for political gain.'
It claimed the steelmakers accused them of harming steel workers and American steel industry over 'national security pretenses', the report said. This is their last effort to revive the attempted merger, which is also opposed by incoming US President Donald Trump. Just as the lawsuit was filed, Trump posted on Truth Social: "Why would they want to sell U.S. Steel now when Tariffs will make it a much more profitable and valuable company? Wouldn’t it be nice to have U.S. Steel, once the greatest company in the World, lead the charge toward greatness again? It can all happen very quickly!"
Biden had blocked the deal last week, citing national security.
A report in The Washington Post said a second lawsuit was filed in which the firms sued another steelmaker Cleveland-Cliffs and its CEO Lourenco Goncalves. That suit also named David McCall, the chief of United Steelworkers Union, as a defendant.
Nippon Steel had earlier said that it is considering taking legal action against the US government after its acquisition proposal was blocked by Biden.
CNN Business had quoted Nippon Steel president Tadashi Imai as saying earlier, "We are considering this as an important option. I think we can take action, including announcing (a response), without taking too much time."
Biden blocked the $13.4 billion acquisition deal on Friday (Jan 3). Both companies called it an overt use of executive authority in the closing days of the Biden administration, which will formally step out when Trump takes the oath of office on January 20.

Imai added, "We are entitled to a proper review. The review process to date and the US government's decision is not a very proper review. Our company cannot allow this to continue. Our company cannot allow this to continue, so we are considering all options for future action."
The deal was announced a year ago and has been opposed by both Democrats and Republicans, including Biden and Trump.
The deal has also been opposed by influential labour unions like United Steelworkers (USW).
The USW commended Biden's decision to block the deal, calling it the right move for the members of the union and national security.
The union added that the recent performance of US Steel, according to their financial performance, shows that the company could remain strong and resilient without the acquisition.
However, the CEO of US Steel, David Burrit, called Biden's decision shameful and corrupt.
US Steel has claimed that it might be forced to shut down its plants and mills if it doesn't get an investment of $2.7 billion. This is the same amount that Nippon Steel has proposed as a part of its purchase.

According to the World Steel Association data, Japan's top steelmaker's effort to acquire US Steel would have created the world's third-largest steelmaker.
The Committee for Foreign Investments in the United States (CFIUS) notified the US President in December that its investigation couldn't reach any consensus on whether the sale of America's iconic company to Nippon would pose a national security risk.
Citing this, CFIUS left the decision of the sale to Biden, who blocked it.

The Japanese government has approved a record defence budget this fiscal year amid increasing security threats.
The country’s defence ministry said Japan was facing its "most severe and complex" security environment since World War II. Of the total $730 billion budget for the year starting April 2025, over $55 billion have been earmarked for defence spending. The increased budget conforms to Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s assertion that more spending on defence was necessary to deal with fresh challenges in the neighbourhood.
It must be noted that Japan is bound by its pacifist post-war constitution, which severely limits its ability to undertake major defence measures. However, Tokyo had updated its defence policy in 2022, in the backdrop of rising security threats from China. In that year, Japan vowed to double its defence spending to comply with the NATO standard of two per cent of GDP by the year 2027.
The government said Japan will use the increased defence funding to boost its Self-Defense Forces (SDF) and improve ties with allies such as the US. Japan is also mulling developing a system to track satellite data to be better prepared to monitor and tackle missile threats from North Korea.

"Strengthening our defence capabilities is something we're actively working on," Ishiba said at an event organised by the Yomiuri newspaper on Thursday.
"Now matter how great our military tanks or vehicles are, it's pointless if we don't have enough people to move them," said the prime minister, who has vowed to fix a shortage of new troops.

Focus on declining birth rate

The budget has also focused on resolving the other biggest crisis facing Japan today: The falling birth rate. Japan remains one of the world’s oldest societies, with 29.3 per cent of population aged 65 or more. The government will now spend more on social welfare spending and economic planning.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries and a tsunami alert was not issued. The quake with a depth of 10 kilometres hit off the Noto Peninsula of central Japan at around 10:47 pm, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. "This earthquake may cause slight changes to sea levels along the coast of Japan, but there is no expectation of damage," Japan's Cabinet Office said on social media platform X. No abnormality has been detected in a local nuclear power plant, public broadcaster NHK quoted nuclear regulation authorities as saying. An NHK reporter stationed in central Japan's Ishikawa region described feeling the vertical "thrust" when it happened, adding traffic lights near him remained standing. Sitting on top of four major tectonic plates along the western edge of the Pacific "Ring of Fire", Japan is one of the world's most tectonically active countries. The vast majority are mild, although the damage they cause varies according to their location and the depth below the Earth's surface at which they strike. On New Year's Day this year, over 400 people died after a massive earthquake hit the peninsula, including "quake-linked" deaths as well as those killed directly in the disaster. The January 1 quake and its aftershocks toppled buildings, caused fires, and knocked out infrastructure at a time when families were celebrating the new year. Former Japanese defence minister Shigeru Ishiba will become the country's next prime minister after he won the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's (LDP) leadership vote on Friday (Sept 27). Ishiba, 67, defeated Minister of State for Economic Security Sanae Takaichi- who could have been the country's first-ever woman prime minister, a report by the news agency AFP said. Ishiba has come close to the top job before, including in 2012 when he lost to nationalist Shinzo Abe, Japan's longest-serving leader who was later assassinated. Who is Shigeru Ishiba? Ishiba was born on February 4, 1957, in Tokyo. His father Jiro was a government official who was elected Governor of Tottori Prefecture in 1958. Jiro served as Minister for Home Affairs in the Zenkō Suzuki Cabinet. Before entering the world of politics in the early 1980s, he worked at Mitsui Bank. In the July 1986 election, Ishiba ran as an LDP candidate in the Tottori at-large district and was elected to the House of Representatives. At 29, he was the youngest member of the House at the time. He served as the defence minister from 2007 to 2008 under then prime minister Yasuo Fukuda, and minister of agriculture, forestry and fisheries under Tarō Asō from 2008 to 2009. The road ahead for the new PM After his victory was announced at the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) headquarters in Tokyo, Ishiba smiled and took off his glasses to wipe his teary eyes, bowing repeatedly as his associates congratulated him. "I will do my utmost to believe in the people, to speak the truth with courage and sincerity, and to make this country a safe and secure place where everyone can live with a smile on their face once again," he said in a short speech. As the upcoming PM, Ishiba would need to face down regional security threats, from an increasingly assertive China and its deepening ties with Russia to North Korea's banned missile tests. At home, the 67-year-old would be tasked with breathing life into the economy, as the central bank moves away from decades of monetary easing that has slashed the value of the yen. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced on Wednesday (Aug 14) that he will not seek re-election as leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) next month, effectively ending his leadership.

"The most obvious first step to show that the LDP will change is for me to step aside. I will not be running in the forthcoming (party) presidential election," Kishida told reporters.

The ruling Liberal Democratic Party, which has governed Japan almost uninterrupted since 1945, is due to hold an internal leadership contest next month.

The 67-year-old Kishida has been in office since October 2021, and has witnessed his poll ratings fall significantly due to the impact of rising prices.

Kishida’s cabinet's support rating has been faded to around 25 percent this year, according to an NHK poll.

The world's fourth-largest economy has also faced difficulties, with output contracting by 0.7 percent in the first quarter.

Kishida in November announced an incentive package worth 17 trillion yen (more than $100 billion at the time) as he tried to ease the pressure from inflation and rescue his premiership.

However, the Japanese voters have been suffering from rising prices since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, pushing up energy costs and putting pressure on the government.

In spite of some recovery in recent weeks, the yen has been one of the world's worst-performing currencies over the past year, falling sharply against the dollar.

Kishida, who has overseen improving relations with South Korea, could theoretically remain in office until 2025.

However, there is speculation that he might call a snap election. NHK reported increasing concerns within the LDP and said the party may struggle to compete in elections under Kishida's leadership.

Kishida has also faced severe criticism over a major funding scandal within the party.

Rahm Emanuel, the US ambassador to Japan, will not attend the annual Nagasaki Peace Memorial Ceremony on Friday (Aug 9) because Israel was not invited, reported the Japan Times on Wednesday.

Israeli Ambassador Gilad Cohen was not invited to the 79th anniversary of the Nagasaki atomic bombing due to security concerns, according to a separate Times report that quoted Nagasaki Mayor Shiro Suzuki.

Suzuki said that the decision aims to keep the ceremony peaceful and centred on honouring the victims. However, some critics argue that excluding Israel is a political move that undermines the fight against terrorism and global unity, the report said.

The decision to leave out Cohen from Nagasaki’s atomic bomb commemoration, while including representatives from countries with serious human rights issues, has sparked concerns, according to the Times.

The report also said that the claim that Japanese police couldn't secure the event "is hard to believe," and the decision to exclude Israel appears unfair.

Syria, Yemen, Venezuela, China, Myanmar, and Afghanistan, were among those invited and are known for significant human rights abuses. Most notably, the media report pointed out, that the Iranian ambassador was included despite Tehran being labelled as a major sponsor of terrorism by the United States and its allies.

Iran’s backing of militant groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah stands in stark contrast to the peace-promoting purpose of the event, underscoring the "irony of this decision," the article noted.

According to the Times, Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons is directly opposed to the ceremony’s aim to remember and denounce such arms.

The Japan Times reported that Mayor Suzuki’s choice to invite a Palestinian representative but not Israel led to US Ambassador Emanuel skipping the Nagasaki Peace Memorial Ceremony on Friday in favour of attending another event in Tokyo.

The US Embassy stated that Emanuel opted out of attending the event because he did not wish to endorse its political matters.

British Ambassador Julia Longbottom will also be absent, explaining that attending might incorrectly equate Israel with Russia. The Israeli ambassador participated in a similar ceremony in Hiroshima earlier this week.

With the yen continuing to weaken and a boom in inbound tourists, businesses in Japan are thinking about implementing a dual pricing system for foreign tourists and locals.

With the yen continuing to weaken and a boom in inbound tourists, businesses in Japan are thinking about implementing a dual pricing system for foreign tourists and locals. In Japan's northernmost prefecture, which is well-known for its breathtaking landscapes and winter resorts, the director of the Hokkaido Tourism Organisation has urged businesses to set lower prices for locals. According to the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper, the organisation is pushing for a trial run of two-tier discounts this autumn. According to the head of one Hokkaido hotel operator, discounts are required to ensure that Japanese tourists do not leave internationally popular resorts like Niseko. In June, the mayor of Himeji, located in western Japan, announced plans to more than quadruple entrance fees for foreign tourists at Himeji Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site with sections dating back to the 17th century. Currently, adults pay 1,000 yen ($6.44) to enter, but Mayor Hideyasu Kiyomoto is considering increasing the fee to approximately $30 for foreign tourists while keeping it at $5 for Japan's citizens. Kiyomoto mentioned the potential damage to the castle due to the high number of visitors. In the 2023 financial year, the castle welcomed 1.48 million visitors, including 452,300 from overseas. In the first half of this year, 17.78 million tourists visited Japan, setting a new record. According to the Nikkei newspaper, foreign visitors spending has quadrupled over the last 10 years and is currently Japan's second-largest "export" category, after automobiles. Also read: British army officer stabbed in Kent; UK PM Starmer reacts Osaka Prefecture has proposed charging foreign visitors a fee to address over-tourism, but this idea has met resistance, particularly with the 2025 Osaka World Exposition approaching. While discounts for students and seniors, as well as tiered pricing for locals, have been common in municipal-supported facilities like hot springs, extending this concept to foreign tourists is still uncommon and controversial. In a survey conducted by Loyalty Marketing, which manages a shopping points card, over 60% of the 1,200 respondents supported having different prices for foreign tourists. One business has already adopted this two-tier pricing system. Tamatebako, a seafood restaurant in Tokyo that opened in April, charges foreign tourists 7,678 yen ($49.30) for a weekday all-you-can-eat and drink buffet, while the price for Japanese residents is 6,578 yen ($42.24). Some shop owners argue that the additional costs of providing special English assistance to foreign tourists justify the higher prices. (With inputs from agencies)

The annual peace ceremony in Nagasaki has not yet sent an invitation to the Israeli ambassador to Japan, according to city officials, who instead wrote the embassy a letter urging a truce in Gaza.

This week, dozens of nations and territories were invited by the southern Japanese city to a ceremony on August 9, the anniversary of the US nuclear assault that killed 74,000 people in 1945.

However, as for Israel, "we have put sending an invitation letter on hold... as the situation is changing day by day," mayor Shiro Suzuki told reporters on Monday.

About eight months ago, Israel launched a brutal military operation in Gaza in response to an attack on the nation by the Palestinian militant group Hamas. According to Suzuki, pro-Palestine protests disrupting the memorial for atomic bomb victims are partly behind the decision.

“Given the critical humanitarian situation in Gaza, and public opinion in the international community, there are concerns about the risk of unexpected incidents during the ceremony,” he said.

“As the Ukraine situation has not changed, we are not inviting Russia or Belarus” either, Suzuki added.

Japanese scientists have reportedly developed a technique to connect lab-grown brain-mimicking tissue in a way that functions like circuits in our brain. Researchers at the University of Tokyo published a study in the journal Nature Communications, exploring materialising an idea always considered pretty far-fetched. The authors revealed that they found a new way to create physiological connections between lab-grown neural organoids. These organoids are experimental model tissue in which human stem cells are grown into 3D developmental brain-mimicking structures. The physiological connections were built via axonal bundles, which is similar to how regions are connected in the living human brain.

“Animal studies are limited by differences between species in brain structure and function, and brain cells grown in the lab tend to lack the characteristic connections of cells in the human brain,” said University of Tokyo’s Dr Yoshiho Ikeuchi and colleagues.

“What’s more, we are increasingly realizing that these interregional connections, and the circuits that they create, are important for many of the brain functions that define us as humans,” they added.

The researchers stimulated the axonal bundles using a technique known as optogenetics. It was observed that the organoids were affected by these changes for some time as the organoid activity was altered.

“Given that alterations in brain networks have been associated with various neurological and psychiatric conditions, a better understanding of brain networks is important,” the researcher said.
