Scientists in Japan have developed a new version of plastic which is not just stronger and stretchier than the traditional version but also partially biodegradable. Besides, it can remember complex shapes which can be restored once it is heated.

Sustainable plastics

Scientists worldwide for long have been pursuing the goal of creating an eco-friendly alternative to traditional plastic due to its devastating impact on the environment.

Now, researchers at the University of Tokyo have successfully created “sustainable plastic,” which is based on an epoxy resin vitrimer.

What are vitrimers?

Vitrimers represent a relatively recent category of plastics known for their impressive strength at low temperatures, while also possessing the unique ability to be reshaped numerous times when exposed to higher temperatures.

Nonetheless, they do have a notable drawback - extreme brittleness, as they cannot be stretched far before breaking.

To address this issue, researchers introduced a molecule called polyrotaxane into the plastic synthesis process, resulting in a novel plastic variant they've dubbed VPR, an abbreviation for "vitrimer incorporated with polyrotaxane."

At lower temperatures, VPR's robust internal chemical bonds maintain its rigid shape, but as temperatures rise, to around 150 degrees Celsius, these bonds start to recombine, allowing the material to take on different forms.

Moreover, when heat and a solvent are applied to VPR, it readily breaks down into its constituent components. Submerging VPR in seawater for 30 days also led to a 25 per cent biodegradation, with the polyrotaxane breaking down into a potential food source for marine life.

Self-healing properties

“VPR is over five times as resistant to breaking as a typical epoxy resin vitrimer,” said Professor Shota Ando, a project research associate at the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Frontier Sciences.

“It also repairs itself 15 times as fast, can recover its original memorised shape twice as fast and can be chemically recycled 10 times as fast as the typical vitrimer. It even biodegrades safely in a marine environment, which is new for this material,” Ando added.

Japan will begin releasing a second batch of wastewater from the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant from next week, its operator has said, an exercise that angered China and others when it began in August.

On August 24, Japan began discharging into the Pacific some of the 1.34 million tonnes of wastewater that has collected since a tsunami crippled the facility in 2011.

"The inspections following the first release have been completed... The (second) discharge will start on October 5," TEPCO said on Thursday.

China banned all Japanese seafood imports after the first release, which ended on September 11, despite Tokyo's insistence that the operation poses no risk.

Russia, whose relations with Japan are also frosty, is reportedly considering following suit on a seafood ban.

In the first phase, around 7,800 tonnes of water were released into the Pacific out of a planned total of 1.34 million tonnes, equivalent to more than 500 Olympic swimming pools.

TEPCO says that the water has been filtered of all radioactive elements except tritium, which is within safe levels. That view is backed by the UN atomic agency.

The concept of bags was initially introduced to encourage kids to walk to and from schools and was made compulsory through their first six years of education. It was originally used by Japanese foot soldiers and was first taken by schoolchildren in the 1800s.

The survey also showed that it was just not kids complaining, even parents were upset, but about its hefty price tag. According to them, in 2022 an average bag cost around ¥56,425 ($353). The price range has increased by almost ¥20,000 ($151) over the past 10 years.

Responding to the complaints, some local authorities have allowed children to leave their textbooks in their classrooms overnight particularly during their summer months, despite the fact that it might discourage them to do their homework.

Tokyo schools drop controversial rules governing hairstyles and underwear

Schools in the Japanese capital Tokyo have decided to drop controversial rules governing hairstyles and underwear after facing intense pressure from students.

Japanese newspaper Mainichi Shimbun cited official sources saying that ''From April almost 200 public high schools and other educational institutions will drop five regulations, including one requiring students to have black hair.''

“Japanese people have been taught to believe that it is a virtue to simply abide by the rules,” said Kaori Yamaguchi, a member of the Tokyo metropolitan board of education.

“I hope this will be an opportunity for people to discuss what we should do to create a society where rules are observed in a way that’s acceptable to everyone.”

Meanwhile, Yuto Kitamura, another member of the same board called it the decision to scrap ''the most egregious regulations was a major step forward''.

Previously, nearly half of Tokyo high schools asked students with hair that is wavy or not black to submit certificates confirming that their hair is not artificially altered.

Of 177 high schools run by the Tokyo Metropolitan government, 79 ask for these certificates signed by parents, public broadcaster NHK had reported.

Although Tokyo's board of education told NHK that the hair certificates were not compulsory. But the broadcaster said only five of the 79 schools made it clear in writing that students aren't required to submit them.

In Japan, many schools have strict rules about hair colour, accessories, make-up, and uniforms, including the length of skirts for girls.

Recently, Japanese schools had banned female students from wearing their hair in ponytails as they fear the “nape of their necks” could “sexually excite” male students.

The harsh regulations, known as buraku kōsoku or “black rules,” have roots dating back to the 1870s when the Japanese government first established increasingly restrictive system of education in an attempt to reduce bullying and violence in schools.

Tokyo schools drop controversial rules governing hairstyles and underwear

Japanese schools have banned female students from wearing their hair in ponytails as they fear the “nape of their necks” could “sexually excite” male students.

“They’re worried boys will look at girls, which is similar to the reasoning behind upholding a white-only underwear color rule,” former middle school teacher Motoki Sugiyama told Vice World News.

“I’ve always criticised these rules, but because there’s such a lack of criticism and it’s become so normalised, students have no choice but to accept them.”

“Because if the two-block (undercut) is OK, then some students might start saying the mohawk should be OK,” Sugiyama explained.

“Many schools ignore notices that aren’t legally binding or that don’t have penalties,” he added.

Japan: Schools have banned ponytails fearing they might ‘sexually excite’ men

In a major shift for a country long closed to immigrants, Japan is looking to allow foreigners in certain blue-collar jobs to stay indefinitely starting as early as the 2022 fiscal year, a justice ministry official said on Thursday.

Under a law that took effect in 2019, a category of "specified skilled workers" in 14 sectors such as farming, nursing care and sanitation have been granted visas but stays have been limited to five years and without family members for workers in all but the construction and shipbuilding sectors.

Companies had cited those restrictions among reasons they were hesitant to hire such help, and the government had been looking to ease those restrictions in the other fields.

If the revision takes effect, such workers, many from Vietnam and China, would be allowed to renew their visas indefinitely and bring their families with them.

Japan on Friday declared state of emergency in three more prefectures that are hit hard by COVID-19 pandemic. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga made an announcement in this regard. It is being viewed as a surprise move that reflects growing concern on spread of coronavirus.

Japan is grappling with surge of more infectious virus strain just 10 weeks before the Tokyo Olympics. The Olympics are due to start on July 23.

Hokkaido, Okayama and Hiroshima will join Tokyo, Osaka and four other prefectures on Sunday (May 16) under a state of emergency until May 31, Suga told a news conference, adding that this was due to a rapid increase of cases in those areas.

The government had originally decided on a more targetted "quasi-emergency" for five additional prefectures.

"We took experts' opinion into consideration," Suga said on the need for a state of emergency in the prefectures, adding that a stronger message had been needed.

The latest measures bring 19 of Japan's 47 prefectures, home to about 70% of the population, under curbs such as an 8 p.m. closing deadline for eateries and a ban on alcohol at most bars and restaurants.

The decision also came just over two months before the Olympics, postponed for a year due to the pandemic and now set to start on July 23. Suga reiterated that the Olympics could be held while ensuring the safety of both athletes and Japanese nationals, and that the government was considering measures on restricting the movements of foreign journalist."
