Security beefed up across J&K ahead of Republic Day celebrations

A mysterious illness has struck the Rajouri district in the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, claiming 17 lives. Medical authorities have rushed to the area to investigate the cause of the illness.
The 17 deaths in Badhaal, about 55 km from Rajouri town, took place between December 7 and January 19.

Dr Amarjeet Singh Bhatia, Principal of Government Medical College Rajouri said that a common factor among the deaths is the involvement of the brain and damage to the nervous system.
"Forensic departments from Chandigarh and Lucknow, and teams from MHA are present here. A common factor in all the deaths is the involvement of the brain and damage to the nervous system," Dr Bhatia said.

Emphasising the recovery rate of the people affected by this 'unidentified disease&rsquo;, Bhatia said, &ldquo;Out of nine patients that were admitted to GMC Rajouri, five recovered. We have conducted preventive CT scans also, but recovery becomes tough once the brain gets involved.&rdquo;
"We are hoping to find the cause (behind the illness) soon. We will educate the people and raise awareness among them like not to exchange foods," he added.
<h2 dir="ltr">'Not a public health emergency'</h2>
Dr M L Raina, CMO Rajouri, said that as per the test reports, there is no need to declare a 'public health emergency.
&ldquo;We have checked the system so that there are no problems. You can see that everything has been cleared from our side. The viral test results are still positive. None of them have come. All are negative. Even if we go to the vectorology side, it is negative. If we go to the viral side, it is negative. There is no public health emergency," he said.

Merriam-Webster, which receives more than 100 million page views every month on its website, chose the word of the year based on the data and tracked the increase of word in search and usage.

Pakistan has been using drones for dropping drugs near the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border, and the money generated by selling those drugs is being pumped into terror organisations. Citing the potential of leaks and breaches, the government said these third-party platforms are not designed to handle sensitive information, and such communication should instead be done on government-approved apps.

An order passed by the General Administration Department on Saturday (Nov 23) said, “It has come to the attention of the administration that there is an increasing trend among officers and officials to use third-party tools such as WhatsApp, Gmail, and other similar platforms for transmitting sensitive, secret, and confidential information. This practice poses significant risks to the integrity and security of the information being communicated."

"Consequently, the use of such tools could result in severe security breaches that jeopardize the integrity of governmental operations," the order reads.

Jammu and Kashmir Police have busted a very unique case in Srinagar's downtown area of Safakadal where they arrested a tech-savvy teenage&nbsp;drug peddler and seized his high-tech drone and narcotics.&nbsp;

According to the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the teenager used the drone to keep a vigil in the area where he used to sell drugs. He would generally call the buyers to a spot and make them walk for over a kilometre while keeping an eye on their movement to be sure that they were not accomplices of the police.

The police officials said that they had information about the teen’s involvement in drug peddling and were keeping a watch so that he could be arrested with narcotic consignment.

“Few days ago, Police station Safa Kadal arrested three drug peddlers from the same area who used to sell narcotics. We have also recovered a drone from the drug peddler, which they used to keep a vigil on the customers and also save themselves from police. This is the first time that a drone has been recovered from a drug peddler in Kashmir. It's a big success,” said Showkat Ahmad Dar, SP, North, Srinagar City.

The Army identified the fallen hero as Naib Subedar Rakesh Kumar of 2 Para and saluted his supreme sacrifice.

The encounter broke out around 11 am when joint search parties of the Army and police intercepted the terrorists in the Keshwan forest, a few kilometres from the spot where the bullet-riddled bodies of VDGs Nazir Ahmad and Kuldeep Kumar were found.

The Army's Jammu-based White Knight Corps said in a post on X, "Based on specific intelligence input regarding the presence of terrorists, a joint operation was launched by security forces in general area Bhart Ridge, Kishtwar. This is the same group which had abducted and killed 02 (two) innocent villagers (village defence guards). Contact was established and firefight ensued."

The officials said four Army personnel, including the JCO, were injured in the initial gunfight and evacuated to a hospital, where the condition of three of them was stated to be "critical". The JCO later succumbed to injuries.
