Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, as per reports, is considering removing posts on social media that use the word "Zionist." This step is being considered to counter a surge of antisemitism, hate speech online, especially during the Israel-Gaza conflict, reports The Washington Post citing people familiar with private deliberations and internal guidance on the topic.&nbsp;

Reportedly, the social media giant has told some civil society groups that 'Zionist' at times is being used as a hurtful substitute for 'Jews' or 'Israelis'.

Since the start of the Israel and Hamas there has been a lot more hate speech online.

On platforms including Meta's Facebook and Instagram, Greenblatt said "antisemitic posts … directly invoke the words 'Zionist' or 'Zionism' in a manner that is not just pejorative but antisemitic, threatening and shameful."

In a statement Meta spokeswoman Erin McPike said that the company doesn't allow&nbsp;people to attack others on the basis of religion or nationality.

More than a fifth of the hostages being held by Hamas militants in Gaza are dead, claims an internal assessment conducted by the Israeli military.

As per the Israeli military report, 32 of the 136 hostages captured by Hamas and its allies during their Oct. 7 attack on Israel have died since the start of the ongoing war in the Middle East. The report curated by Israeli intelligence officers has been reviewed and reported on by the New York Times.

<h2>Families notified</h2>

As per the report citing four military officials speaking on the condition of anonymity, families of the deceased Hamas hostages have been informed after the deaths were confirmed.

The officials told NYT that at least 20 other hostages may also have been killed in detention. They said that the military was in the process of assessing the veracity as of now unconfirmed intelligence.

This figure, of 32 dead hostages, as per the report, is higher than any number previously disclosed by the Israeli authorities. In a comment to the publication, the Israeli military disclosed that most of the dead were killed on Oct 7 itself.

<h2>Worsening tensions</h2>

Tensions between Israel and Hamas are continuously on rise. This news is likely to worsen the situation. As per the report, it may cause a furore in Israel where debate over the government course of action to bring back the hostages has divided opinions.

Some, as per Reuters, have accused international organisations, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government of not doing enough to ensure the hostages' return.

The Oct 7 attack claimed 1,200 lives. Around 250 people were taken to the Palestinian enclave as hostages. Of these, roughly half have been freed — most of them during a temporary truce in November of last year, when they were exchanged for 240 Palestinian prisoners and detainees held in Israeli jails.

Since then, the issue of what price Israel should pay to get the more than 100 remaining hostages back, and how to balance that goal against its other stated war objective, to destroy Hamas, has become increasingly polarising.

Israel has vowed to annihilate Hamas in Gaza after the militant group's fighters rampaged through Israeli towns. The country's government has said that its military operations in Gaza will bring back the hostages.

However, families have increasingly been putting pressure on Netanyahu, with the leader's popularity falling to rock bottom over the war.

Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu told the families of hostages that a "real effort" was being made towards their return. However, he said that it was too early to say how such a move would play out.

Middle East crisis: 32 Israeli hostages in Hamas custody dead, claims report

Britain's top diplomat, former prime minister David Cameron on Thursday (Feb 1st) said that his country could officially recognise a Palestinian state after a cease-fire. Speaking&nbsp;during a visit to Lebanon, he&nbsp;said this could be done without waiting for the outcome of what could be years-long talks on a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians.

<h2>Terms and conditions applied</h2>

The British Foreign Secretary said that the UK's recognition of an independent State of Palestine "can't come at the start of the process, but it doesn't have to be the very end of the process."

"It could be something that we consider as this process, as this advance to a solution, becomes more real," said Cameron.

"What we need to do is give the Palestinian people a horizon towards a better future, the future of having a state of their own."

However, he stated that no recognition could come while Hamas remained in Gaza.&nbsp;

"You can't have a two-state solution with Gaza still controlled by the people responsible for 7 October," he said, referring to the Hamas attack that triggered the ongoing war in Gaza.&nbsp;

Cameron also said the first step towards this must be a "pause in the fighting" in Gaza, which he said would eventually turn into "a permanent, sustainable ceasefire".

The ex-prime minister labelled the prospect "absolutely vital for the long-term peace and security of the region."

<h2>International support for two-state</h2>

Globally, many Western nations, including the United Kingdom and the United States, have voiced their support for the idea of an independent Palestinian state existing alongside Israel, reports The Guardian. However, they stress that Palestinian independence must come as part of a negotiated settlement.

Israel and its Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have consistently been against the creation of an independent Palestinian state after the end of the ongoing war. Netanyahu, in December, even boasted that he was instrumental in stopping Palestine's statehood.

Britain could officially recognise a Palestinian state after cease-fire, says top UK diplomat

On Sunday (Jan 28), three members of the United States troops were killed in a drone attack in Jordan. The US has blamed Iran-backed Iraqi militia Kataib Hezbollah for the attack that killed specialists Kennedy Ladon Sanders, 24, Breonna Alexsondria Moffett, 23, and Sergeant William Jerome Rivers, 46 and wounded dozens more.&nbsp;

Speaking to the press on Monday (Jan 29), Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh blamed Iran for enabling groups to attack the United States.&nbsp;

Singh said,&nbsp;"In terms of, attribution for the attack, we know this is an IRGC-backed militia. It has the footprints of Kataib Hezbollah. But we are not making a final assessment on that. Our teams here are continuing to do the analysis, but we know that Iran is behind it. And, certainly, as we've said before, here in this briefing room, Iran continues to arm and equip these groups to launch these attacks."

But, who is Kataib Hezbollah? Here's everything we know.

<h2>Kataib Hezbollah — Establishment and more&nbsp;</h2>

As per Reuters, the militant group Kataib Hezbollah was founded in the aftermath of the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq.&nbsp;

"Founded in 2007, KH seeks to establish an Iran-aligned government in Iraq, expel US and coalition forces from the country, and advance Iranian interests throughout the Middle East," states Counter Terrorism Guide.

It is one of the elite Iraqi armed factions closest to Iran. While it is primarily based in Iraq and Syria; as per the US National Counterterrorism Center, it also possibly operates in Bahrain, Iran, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia.

Soon after it was founded, the group developed a reputation for its deadly attacks against both military and diplomatic targets. In the 2000s, it started carrying out the attacks using a mixture of sniper, rocket and mortar attacks and even roadside bombs.

<h2>Kataib Hezbollah — Leader</h2>

The group was led by dual Iraqi-Iranian citizen, Jamal Jaafar Ibrahimi alias Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, who was killed in 2020 by a US drone strike. Iranian Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani was also killed in the strike at Baghdad's international airport. Ibrahimi&nbsp;was allegedly the mastermind behind the US and French embassy bombings in Kuwait in 1983 and the assassination attempt on Kuwait’s emir in 1985.

As per UK-based news agency Reuters, the shadowy group has no announced leadership structure. However, quoting Iraqi officials and members of the group, the news agency reports that the group is believed to have thousands of fighters and an arsenal of drones, rockets and short-range ballistic missiles.

However, as per National Counterterrorism Center, Kataib Hezbollah's current overall leader is Ahmad al-Hamidawi. He was named a Specially Designated Global Terrorist in February 2020.

<h2>Kataib Hezbollah — Ideology</h2>

Kataib Hezbollah, as per reports is the most powerful armed faction in the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, and also the "most secretive" and elite of Iraq's predominantly Shi'ite militias.&nbsp;

According to the US Department of State, Kataib Hezbollah is "a radical Shia Islamist group with an anti-Western establishment and jihadist ideology."

On its website, the group states that its first goal "was and still remains: thwarting the American project in the region, defeat of the occupation, and expelling them from Iraq, broken and humbled…. As for our jihadi pillars, there are four. Firstly, waging jihad against the occupation until the last American is expelled from Iraq."

It is an umbrella group of hardline Shi'ite armed groups that claimed more than 150 attacks on US forces since the start of the Gaza war. The militant group was designated as a foreign terrorist organisation in July 2009 by the United States.

The group reportedly has a transnational Shi'ite ideology and views the borders between Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon as Western constructs. It also considers US troops in Iraq as foreign occupiers and has even called for their forceful expulsion.

Kataib Hezbollah is known to have fought alongside other Shi'ite militias against mostly Sunni rebels during Syria's civil war. Ever since that, it has continued to operate in Syria.

Kataib Hezbollah, is also known to be a prominent militia within Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF). Initially established in 2014 to combat the Islamic State, the PMF has evolved into an officially recognised security force with fighters receiving state salaries. Notably, Kataib Hezbollah members, some of whom are designated as terrorists by the US, hold influential positions in the PMF, reports Reuters.

Despite being technically under the command of Iraq's prime minister as part of the PMF, Kataib Hezbollah often operates independently, challenging and defying government directives to cease attacks on US forces.&nbsp;

In addition to its military activities, Kataib Hezbollah is believed to have ventured into the political arena. Although the group neither confirms nor denies these political links publicly, it is widely perceived to have formed a political party that participated in the 2021 elections. Remarkably, the group secured several seats in the Iraqi parliament, signalling its expanding influence beyond the realm of armed operations.

US President Joe Biden&nbsp;has come under fire for carrying out strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen. The strikes, which were carried out without congressional approval, have earned the ire of Biden's fellow democrats who said that the action was "unconstitutional" and that he "needs to come to Congress" before launching a strike.

The American President was also slammed on social media as people dug out an old post he made on Twitter, now known as X, in which he promised to use "military power responsibly".

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak too called the strikes "necessary and proportionate" and said that the Houthis' breach of international law merited a "strong signal" in response.

India at the United Nations General Assembly strongly condemned the rising civilian casualties of the Israel-Hamas war and said that the alarming humanitarian crisis was "clearly unacceptable".

Speaking at the UNGA meeting on Tuesday, India's permanent representative to the United Nations, Ruchira Kamboj said, "The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has led to a large-scale loss of civilian lives, especially women and children, and has resulted in an alarming humanitarian crisis."

"This is clearly unacceptable, and we have strongly condemned the deaths of civilians," added the Indian envoy.

She also acknowledged that the "immediate trigger" for Israel's strikes on Gaza "were the terror attacks in Israel on October 7, which were shocking and deserve our unequivocal condemnation."&nbsp;

"India has a zero-tolerance approach to terrorism," added Kamboj, as reported by PTI.

Calling for the immediate release of hostages, Kamboj said the leadership of India is in constant touch with the region's leaders — including Palestine and Israel.&nbsp;Addressing the 193-member UNGA, Kamboj also highlighted her nation's continuous efforts to de-escalate the situation and extend humanitarian aid to Gaza.

<h2>Two-state solution has India's support</h2>

Voicing India's support for the two-state solution, Kamboj said it can only be achieved "through direct and meaningful negotiations between both sides."

"The message that India has conveyed since the start of this conflict is clear and consistent. It is important to prevent escalation, to ensure continued delivery of humanitarian aid, and to work towards an early restoration of peace and stability. A peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy is the only way forward," she said.

'Clearly unacceptable': India condemns Israel-Hamas war's rising civilian death toll, calls for de-escalation

The US and the UK on Tuesday (Jan 9)&nbsp;shot down 21 missiles and drones launched by Houthi rebels from Yemen. The attack, as per reports, was one of the largest Houthi attacks to take place in the Red Sea in recent months.

Quoting two US defence officials,&nbsp;CNN had reported that the attack consisted of 24 missiles and drones. It also said that initial assessments indicate no harm to ships and no injuries or casualties resulting from the extensive drone and missile barrage.

As per a US Central Command (CENTCOM) statement "Iranian-backed Houthis launched a complex attack of Iranian designed one-way attack UAVs..., anti-ship cruise missiles, and an anti-ship ballistic missile from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen into the Southern Red Sea."

It further said that the drones and missiles were downed by a combination of F/A-18 warplanes operating from the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier and one British and three American destroyers.

<h2>How the US carried out the strike</h2>

The US deployed three destroyers to counter and eliminate the imminent threats, said one official.&nbsp;

"We can confirm a Houthi attack occurred today near the southern Red Sea. We’ll provide additional details when they’re available," said a third official, as quoted by CNN.

The Houthi rebels, aligning themselves with Iran, have said that their missile and drone launches are symbolic acts of solidarity with the Palestinian people. Initial attacks, soon after the start of the Israel-Hamas war, targeted vessels with connections to Israel. However, since then, as per Vice Adm. The nation has vowed to destroy Hamas, and its retaliatory attack has claimed more than 22,000 lives, as per the health ministry in the Hamas-controlled Gaza —most of them women and children. Mia Schem, a 21-year-old French tattoo artist who was among the people abducted by Hamas militants during the Oct 7 attack, has revealed the "only reason" she wasn't raped during her captivity.

Speaking during an interview recently released on Israeli TV, the woman who spent 54 days in captivity said that the only reason she wasn't raped was because her captor's family was right outside the door.

"His wife was outside the room with the children," she said, adding, "That was the only reason he didn’t rape me."

<h2>A harrowing experience</h2>

Talking about her harrowing experience as a captive, Schem said that her tormentor kept her "closed in a dark room, not allowed to talk, not allowed to be seen, to be heard, hidden" for most of her captivity in Gaza.&nbsp;

She claims that she was starved and taunted by the captor's family.

"There is fear of being raped, there is fear of dying," she said, recounting the ordeal.&nbsp;

"His wife hated the fact that he and I were in the same room. You feel like you want a hug, you know, woman to woman, to break down a bit," she said, adding "But she (the captor's wife) was so mean, she had such mean eyes."

Released Hamas hostage Mia Schem reveals the 'only reason' she wasn't raped

Amid the horrors of war in Gaza, a woman pregnant with quadruplets had to walk five kilometres in search of shelter for her unborn babies. The Gazan woman, 28-year-old Iman al-Masry, has now given birth to her premature children, one of whom was too weak to leave the hospital.

<h2>Simply exhausted</h2>

Talking to news agency AFP, the mother said she is simply exhausted after giving birth to the quadruplets in a hospital in Southern Gaza.&nbsp;

Al-Masry, at six months pregnant, had to flee her family home in Beit Hanun on foot, along with her three other children, seeking safety.&nbsp;

The family had to walk five kilometres (around three miles) to the Jabalia refugee camp. "The distance was too long,"&nbsp;the young woman told AFP.

"It affected my pregnancy," she added. On December 18, she gave birth by C-section to daughters Tia and Lynn and sons Yasser and Mohammed.&nbsp;

Of the four, Mohammed was too fragile to leave the hospital. However, to make space for other patients of war, Iman and her other newborns had to leave the medical facility.&nbsp;

"Mohammed weighs only one kilogram (2.2 pounds). He cannot survive," said Iman, talking about the child she had to leave behind at a hospital in the Nuseirat refugee camp.

The mother and her other three newborns are now living in a cramped schoolroom turned shelter in Deir al-Balah along with around 50 other members of their extended family.

Talking to AFP, she recounted her journey from "hell",&nbsp;and said: "When I left home, I had only some summer clothes for the children. I thought the war would last a week or two and that afterwards we would go back home."

Now, more than 11 weeks later, her hope of going&nbsp;home has shattered.

<h2>The human cost of war</h2>

Iman is not alone. Thousands of Gazans have been rendered homeless by the war that began on Oct 7, with Hamas launching an attack on Israel. In the first attack, as per Israeli figures, 1,140 Israelis lost their lives. Another 250 were taken hostage by the Hamas militants, and 129 of them still remain in captivity.

The retaliatory attack by Israel, according to the latest toll issued by Gaza's health ministry, has killed at least 21,110 people — about two-thirds of them women and children.

As the Israel-Hamas war nears the three-month mark, a new controversy behind the 'real' reason for Hamas's&nbsp;attack on Israel has started brewing.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps,&nbsp;a multi-service primary branch of the Iranian Armed Forces,&nbsp;on Wednesday (Dec 27) claimed that the attack was retribution for the assassination of Qassem Soleimani.&nbsp;However, denying this, the militant group Hamas reiterated its previous claims that the October 7 attack was a response to what it called the "occupation" and "ongoing aggression against our people and the holy places".

These narratives come amid a climbing death toll in Gaza&nbsp;and international pressure for a ceasefire. On Wednesday, French President Emmanuel Macron also demanded a "lasting ceasefire" in Gaza. As per Macron's office, the leader made this demand during a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"France will work in the coming days in cooperation with Jordan to carry out humanitarian operations in Gaza," said the French presidency in a statement.

<h2>Is Soleimani's&nbsp;killing the reason?</h2>

In his remarks regarding the Monday (Dec 25) killing of Brig. Gen. Razi Mousavi by an Israeli airstrike in Syria, IRGC spokesman Ramazan Sharif made the connection between Hamas' attack and the killing of Soleimani.

He said that the October attack was "one of the revenge" for the slaying, as reported by The Times of Israel.

Sharif also said that the IRGC was 'well aware' of the reasons behind the recent killing of Mousavi. However, the IRGC spokesperson stressed that the killing would not affect the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps campaign "against the Zionist entity".

"We will respond accordingly, directly or indirectly, through the resistance axis," he added.

Calling the killing an "act of terror", the organisation also vowed that the revenge "will be decisive at the right time and place". Previously, Iranian officials, including President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, have also vowed revenge for Mousavi’s death.

<h2>Hamas denies IRGC claims</h2>

Swiftly denying Iran's claims, the Palestinian militant group&nbsp;Hamas reiterated that "all Palestinian resistance actions" were in response to the "occupation and its ongoing aggression against our people and the holy places."

On October 7, Hamas military commander Muhammad Deif said in a recorded message that the attack dubbed "Operation Al-Aqsa Deluge" was launched in retaliation for Israel's "desecration" of the Al-Aqsa Mosque. He had also claimed that the action was a follow-up of previous warnings by the group.

<h2>Who was Soleimani?</h2>

In 2020, IRGC Quds Force head Qassem Soleimani was killed in a US drone strike near the Baghdad International Airport in Iraq. At the time of his death, he was considered the second-most powerful person in Iran, only subordinate to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.&nbsp;Razi Mousavi was one of his close associates.&nbsp;

The United States' two busiest airports on Wednesday became the sight of rallies, as pro-Palestinian protesters blocked morning traffic, engaging in violent skirmishes with the police.

Carrying signs that read "free Palestine" and "divest from genocide", among other things, protesters blocked roads around the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). The coast-to-coast demonstrations, as per Reuters, ended with dozens of arrests.

<h2>Unruly demonstrators</h2>

As per the Los Angeles Police Department, 36 people were taken into custody at LAX, where demonstrators became unruly.

In a statement, the police said, "Protesters threw a police officer to the ground, used construction debris, road signs, tree branches and blocks of concrete to obstruct" a road into the airport. The entrance was reopened within 45 minutes with "no impacts to fights," reported the Los Angeles City News Service.

Israel on Tuesday (Dec 26) returned&nbsp;the remains of 80 Palestinians who had lost their lives in Gaza. The bodies were taken from morgues and graves, and were put through careful scrutiny to ensure that there were no hostages among them.

News agency AFP, quoting unnamed sources within the territory's health ministry, reported that the bodies which had been transported to Israel were being returned through the Red Cross.&nbsp;

<h2>What will happen to the bodies?</h2>

The international organisation handed over the remains to Hamas authorities, who buried them in a mass grave, reports AFP. A photojournalist with the news agency reportedly witnessed blue body bags being lowered into a trench in Rafah, in the far south of Gaza.

After Israel carried out its inspection of the bodies, they were returned to the Red Cross, transported via the Kerem Shalom crossing—the vital link connecting Israel and the Gaza Strip.&nbsp;Following this, a truck carried the bodies to their final resting place in the mass grave.

<h2>Israeli hostages</h2>

The backdrop to this can be traced back to the unfortunate events of October 7 when Hamas militants launched an attack on southern Israel. There, they abducted approximately 200&nbsp;hostages and them to the Gaza Strip. Approximately 129 hostages still remain in Hamas captivity in Gaza.

Around 1,140 people lost their lives in the initial attack, as per Israel.

Since the beginning of the war, more than 20,900 have been killed in Israel's retaliatory attacks on Gaza—most of them women and children, reports the health ministry in the Hamas-controlled Gaza. Additionally, around 55,000 people have been wounded.

Israel has vowed to destroy the Palestinian militant organisation. Even as international calls for a ceasefire gain traction, Israel has repeatedly reiterated that the war will continue till Hamas is destroyed.

On Tuesday, in a televised statement, Israel's Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi said that the war would go on "for many months".

"There are no magic solutions, there are no shortcuts in dismantling a terrorist organisation, only determined and persistent fighting," he said, adding "We will reach Hamas' leadership too, whether it takes a week or if it takes months."

There, they abducted approximately 200 hostages and them to the Gaza Strip. Approximately 129 hostages still remain in Hamas captivity in Gaza. Around 1,140 people lost their lives in the initial attack, as per Israel. "There are no magic solutions, there are no shortcuts in dismantling a terrorist organisation, only determined and persistent fighting," he said, adding "We will reach Hamas' leadership too, whether it takes a week or if it takes months." Israel returns 80 bodies it took from morgues and graves in Gaza for 'examination'

As the Israel-Gaza war stretches to its three-month mark, reports of Palestinians facing torture at the hands of the Israeli army have come to light. On Sunday, recently freed detainees alleged that the Israeli forces were torturing Palestinian civilians in their custody in the Gaza Strip. A Gaza medic corroborated this narrative. However, the military has denied the charges.

<h2>Blows and beatings</h2>

As per an AFP report, the two men were among hundreds detained by Israeli forces over alleged links with armed group Hamas. These people have been detained as part of Israel's ongoing ground offensive in the besieged Hamas-run territory.

The narrative of torture was confirmed by a medic. Talking to AFP, Marwan al-Hams, hospital director of Rafah's Martyr Mohammed Yusuf al-Najjar Hospital revealed that about 20 men released from Israeli custody "have bruises and marks of blows on their bodies".

Hamas, as per the news agency, said that the freed Palestinians were admitted to Al-Najjar hospital, in the southern city of Rafah upon their release.

Nayef Ali, a 22-year-old, who claims to have been detained in Gaza City's eastern Zaitun suburb and later taken to an Israeli detention facility said: "They (Israeli troops) tied our hands behind our backs for two days."

To support his claims, he showed the news agency cuts on his wrists and other parts of his body.

"We were not allowed to eat or drink, neither were we allowed to use the toilet," he said, adding, "There were only beatings and beatings."

He also alleged that Palestinian detainees were held in a "freezing cold" area along the border with Israel.

"They threw cold water on us before transferring us to a prison, where it was again torture and beatings."

Another former detainee, 55-year-old Khamis al-Bardini, also alleged torture by Israeli soldiers, and said that during his detention there were "beatings during the day", while they poured "cold water on our heads through the night".

<h2>Israel rejects allegations</h2>

Rejecting the claim, the Israeli army said that all the detainees were "treated in accordance with international law".

In a statement to AFP, the Israeli forces said, "While detained, the suspects are given sufficient food and water and treated according to protocol."

Israel vowed to defeat Hamas after a deadly attack by the militants on October 7, launching a relentless military campaign in Gaza.

These allegations come as the Israeli army faced widespread international condemnation after a video of stripped-down detainees with their hands tied behind their backs went viral.

Additionally, reports of deaths of detainees in the military's custody have also come to light. To this, the Israeli army said it was investigating the deaths of "terrorists in military detention centres".

United States Vice President Kamala Harris has reportedly become the cause of tensions in the White House.&nbsp;As per reports, President Joe Biden's second-in-command has been urging him and other colleagues to show more sensitivity to the plight of Palestinian civilians, as the death toll in Gaza continues to mount.&nbsp;

<h2>A push for sympathy</h2>

As per a Politico report, Harris has been telling her colleagues that she wants the White House to publicly be sensitive and show more concern about the humanitarian damage in Gaza.

The publication reports that in internal conversations about the Israel-Hamas war, Harris has expressed her belief that the US should be "tougher" on Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu.&nbsp;

<h2>Differences between Biden and Harris?</h2>

There are longstanding differences in perspective between Harris and Biden, reports Politico. However, Kirsten Allen, Kamala Harris'&nbsp;press secretary, clarified that "there is no daylight between the president and the vice president, nor has there been".

Allen said that the two are aligned and "have been clear: Israel has a right and responsibility to defend itself; humanitarian aid must be allowed to flow into Gaza; innocent civilians must be protected; and the United States remains committed to a two-state solution."

She also cautioned the media "about citing anonymous sources in the ‘orbit’ about sensitive national security conversations between the president and vice president that take place in the Oval Office."

Since the beginning of this war on Oct 7, the US has repeatedly made mention of its support for Israel's right to defend itself, and spoken up about a rise in antisemitism. However, as per a Washington Post report from last month, in October, Harris had urged Biden to condemn Islamophobia along with antisemitism.&nbsp;

Since then, the US has grown increasingly willing to criticise Israel's "indiscriminate bombing" of Gaza, with Biden even calling on the Netanyahu government to "change" its methods.

US VP Harris urges President Biden to be 'tougher' on Netanyahu, sparks tensions: Report

Even as the civilian casualties in Gaza continue to rise, Israeli citizens say that the army should not back off from its unrelenting offensive to crush the militant group Hamas.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on Wednesday, echoed the sentiments and announced that the country will continue to fight.

This is despite the international calls for a ceasefire and the fading global sympathy for Israel.

Polls conducted in recent weeks show overwhelming support for the war. Talking to Reuters on Wednesday, four Israeli citizens said that regardless of fading global sympathy for Israel — aptly reflected in Tuesday's UN resolution — now was not the time to back down.

'Dictator for a day': Biden labels Trump a threat to democracy; reaffirms commitment to Israel

Christmas is cancelled in Bethlehem. Palestinians in the biblical place of Jesus Christ's birth have this year decided to forego Christmas celebrations in solidarity with the Gazan plight as the Israel-Hamas war drags on even after weeks.

<h2>Missing Christmas&nbsp;</h2>

This year, in Bethlehem there won't be any public celebrations, Christmas lights or the iconic decorated tree in Manger Square, reports The Free Press.&nbsp;

There will still be a manger scene located in the sanctuary of the Evangelical Lutheran Christmas Church in Bethlehem. However, instead of the traditional baby Jesus surrounded by adoring parents, shepherds, wise men, angels and animals, it will showcase a swaddled doll lying among the shattered ruins and debris of a destroyed building.

"If Jesus were born today, he would be born in Gaza under the rubble," said Pastor Munther Isaac of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the West Bank city of Bethlehem.

Munther, as per Reuters, said there would be no Christmas celebrations as long as Israel's bombardment of Gaza continues.&nbsp;

As per the report, the pastor has even replaced the traditional wooden crib with rubble in the grotto, set up a few weeks before the Christian celebration on December 25 of the birth of Christ.

"We see the picture of Jesus in every child under the rubble in Gaza, so this is a letter of solidarity with our people in Gaza and an expression of the meaning of Christmas, God is with the suffering and the oppressed," he added.

The city will hold pared-down celebrations "without the fanfare and without too many lights".&nbsp;

As per Reuters, this is the first time in the residents' memories that the Nativity Square won't have any Christmas tree.&nbsp;

“We will celebrate in sobriety, that means without the fanfare and without too many lights, in the most spiritual way and more in the families than in the square," said Father Francesco Patton, custodian of the Holy Land.

Israel-Hamas war: Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus Christ, cancels Christmas in solidarity with Gaza

Washington's biggest Hanukkah shindig is known to be the biggest and the booziest celebration ever. Bringing together Jewish people over hot potato latkes, a vodka bar and Israeli-style sufganyot, or jelly-filled doughnuts for the past 28 years, the massive party is hosted by DC publicist Steve Rabinowitz.

However, this year the coveted invite-only&nbsp;celebration of the eight-day festival of lights has been cancelled, and it's not the only one. The reason? Israel-Hamas war.

<h2>Toned down, cancelled Hanukkah celebrations&nbsp;</h2>

In Virginia, as per ABC News, a menorah lighting at a Virginian art and music festival was reportedly cancelled over apparent concerns related to the ongoing war in the Middle East. Talking to the Gazette, Shirley Vermillion, the festival's founder, said the menorah lighting "seemed very inappropriate" given the conflict.

The event was scheduled for a monthly art and musical festival happening on December 10.

At the same time, the White House is yet to announce if and how it will celebrate the eight-day festival.

Across the US, there is an uptick in the number of Hanukkah events getting cancelled. Some escaped cancellation, but have been toned down.

<h2>White House reacts</h2>

Speaking during a news briefing, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that "every action" had been taken in an apparent attempt to help make the Jewish community feel safe.

"We have seen an uptick in hate, just more broadly, in different communities—obviously, also in the Muslim community. And so, we will do everything that we can to make sure that these communities feel safe," she added.

"Obviously, over the past couple of weeks since this—certainly since this war started, we have seen the increase of antisemitism. You know, we understand the fear that people in the Jewish community must be feeling right now, which is why we have taken action to do everything that we can to make sure that people in that community feel protected. And so, that's what we're going to continue to do."

<h2>Backlash</h2>

The cancellations have triggered a backlash.

Reacting to the news of cancellation at the music festival, Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin said: "Singling out the Jewish community by cancelling this Hanukkah celebration is absurd and antisemitic. The event organisers should immediately reconsider their actions and move forward with the menorah lighting."

In a post on X, former Virginia House Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn, a Democrat, also echoed similar sentiments. She said: "Cancelling the menorah lighting ceremony and holding Jewish people responsible for the ongoing conflict in the Middle East is shocking and outrageous. This type of hate has no place in Virginia."

Bringing together Jewish people over hot potato latkes, a vodka bar and Israeli-style sufganyot, or jelly-filled doughnuts for the past 28 years, the massive party is hosted by DC publicist Steve Rabinowitz. However, this year the coveted invite-only celebration of the eight-day festival of lights has been cancelled, and it's not the only one. The reason? Israel-Hamas war. Toned down, cancelled Hanukkah celebrations In Virginia, as per ABC News, a menorah lighting at a Virginian art and music festival was reportedly cancelled over apparent concerns related to the ongoing war in the Middle East. Talking to the Gazette, Shirley Vermillion, the festival's founder, said the menorah lighting "seemed very inappropriate" given the conflict. At the same time, the White House is yet to announce if and how it will celebrate the eight-day festival. Across the US, there is an uptick in the number of Hanukkah events getting cancelled. Some escaped cancellation, but have been toned down. White House reacts Speaking during a news briefing, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that "every action" had been taken in an apparent attempt to help make the Jewish community feel safe. And so, that's what we're going to continue to do." Also read | 69 million children in 'rich' countries living in poverty: UNICEF Backlash The cancellations have triggered a backlash. Hanukkah events toned down or scrapped across US in wake of Israel-Hamas war

Almost two months into Hamas militants' unprecedented October 7 attack on Israel, reports and accusations of the use of rape&nbsp;and sexual violence as a tool of war continue to circulate.

Israel has accused Hamas of raping "dozens" of women and some men during day one of the attack — a charge vehemently refuted by the militant group.

Labelling the allegations "unfounded lies", the group said they were part of "Zionist campaigns which promote unfounded lies and allegations to demonise the Palestinian resistance".

<h2>Rape — a weapon of war</h2>

Recently, in a statement, UN Women said it was "alarmed by the numerous accounts of gender-based atrocities" during the attacks on southern Israel.

This comes as Israeli police say they have launched an investigation and are collecting evidence of sexual violence.

Meni Binyamin, the head of the International Crime Investigations Unit of the Israeli police, told The New York Times that they "are investigating sexual crimes against both women and men perpetrated by Hamas terrorists".

In an interview with the publication, Binyamin claimed, "There were violent rape incidents, the most extreme sexual abuses we have seen, of both women and men. I am talking about dozens."

He said that a team of investigators had gathered "tens of thousands" of testimonies from survivors, witnesses and first responders.&nbsp;

Binyamin also said that they were combing through banks of videos and photos from the Oct 7 Hamas incursion, but refused to divulge details, saying, "This is an ongoing investigation."

However, he said that autopsies, forensic evidence, and confessions also corroborate that sexual crimes were committed by Hamas.

<h2>Dishonour on top of abuse</h2>

Yael Sherer, a spokesperson for Israel-based advocacy group Survivors of Sexual Violence, told BBC Radio 4 that there is evidence of sexual violence against both men and women.

"There was sexual violence and rape in these communities in the south of Israel… we have a few living survivors—not a lot—of both genders. It didn't only happen to women, it happened to men as well," she said.

Sherer alleged that Hamas militants not only sexually violated Israelis but also mutilated their bodies.

"Aside from finding bodies of people who were murdered, a lot of the bodies were mutilated… terrorists made sure to disgrace these people and dishonour them."

<h2>Where's the international condemnation?</h2>

In an opinion piece for Newsweek, Israeli First Lady Michal Herzog expressed her outrage over the international community's failure to condemn the gender-based sexual violence perpetrated by Hamas.

Calling international silence over the crimes a "betrayal of all women," Herzog said, "The silence of international human rights organisations, and the unwillingness to believe Israeli women in the face of overwhelming evidence, has been devastating."&nbsp;

<h2>UN steps up</h2>

Eight weeks of silence later, the United Nations has launched its own investigation into the sexual violence Hamas is accused of.&nbsp;

In a statement posted on X on Nov 30, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said: "There are numerous accounts of sexual violence during the abhorrent acts of terror by Hamas on 7 October that must be vigorously investigated and prosecuted."

<h2>Witness testimonies reveal ghastly narratives</h2>

In the days since the Hamas attack, horrifying, ghastly witness testimonies of unprecedented sexual abuse, including that of a woman begging to be killed as she was gang-raped, have emerged.&nbsp;

Talking to UK's Sunday Times, Yoni Saadon, a reveller at the Nova Music Festival, recounted tales of horror from October 7.

"I saw this beautiful woman with the face of an angel and eight or 10 of the fighters beating and raping her," he recalled.

"She was screaming, 'Stop it already! I'm going to die anyway from what you are doing, just kill me!'

"When they finished, they were laughing, and the last one shot her in the head," said the 39-year-old.

Giving an account of how he survived the massacre, Saadon, the father of four, revealed that he had smeared himself with the blood of a slain woman to look dead.

"I will never forget her face," he said, talking about his saviour, who had been shot in the head by the attacking militants.

"Every night I wake to it and apologise to her, saying, 'I'm sorry.'"

He also claims to have witnessed the beheading of a young woman who had fought back as Hamas stripped her.

"They threw her to the ground, and one of the terrorists took a shovel and beheaded her," he told The Sunday Times, adding, "And her head rolled along the ground. I see that head, too."

"These crimes against women were in many cases documented by the terrorists themselves and broadcast for the world to see. Those of us who have fought for women’s rights and have sought to shout from the rooftops when women’s bodies are being used in war for the sadistic pleasure of perpetrators are astounded at how the world has been silent surrounding this," she said.

Israel uncovers Hamas tunnel at Al-Shifa Hospital; finds body of 65-year-old kidnapped during Oct 7 attack

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a recent interview hinted at a potential breakthrough in securing the release of hostages held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip.&nbsp;

While refraining from disclosing any details that could jeopardise the negotiations, he said "There could be" a deal in the works.

His statement comes soon after the militant group said it was suspending hostage negotiations over Israel's actions at Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza.

<h2>What Netanyahu said</h2>

Speaking to NBC's "Meet the Press," Netanyahu acknowledged the evolving situation and stated, "There could be" a deal in the works.

However, the Prime Minister was cautious not to disclose specifics, emphasising the sensitivity of the ongoing negotiations.&nbsp;

"We heard that there was an impending deal of this kind or of that kind and then we learned that it was all hokum. But the minute we started the ground operation, that began to change," he said.

"I think the less I say about it, the more I'll increase the chances that it materialises," remarked Netanyahu.

<h2>What the Hamas said</h2>

On the other hand, Hamas, as per Reuters, on Sunday announced a suspension of hostage negotiations citing concerns over Israel's actions at Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza.&nbsp;

As Israel intensifies its ground invasion in northern Gaza, the Al-Shifa Hospital has faced severe bombardment, resulting in the destruction of its cardiac ward.&nbsp;

Palestinian health officials have also reported the halt of operations at the hospitals due to a lack of fuel.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) said that individuals attempting to leave the hospital were being shot at. Condemning the situation, the international medical humanitarian organisation accused the Israeli military of putting civilians trapped in Al-Shifa at risk, describing it as a "death warrant."

"Our staff are witnessing people being shot at as they attempt to flee the hospital," said MSF in a report published on Saturday.

"MSF denounces the death warrant of civilians currently trapped in Al-Shifa hospital signed by the Israeli military."

As per Israel Hamas is holding 239 people hostages in Gaza. It has also alleged that the militants are using the Al-Shifa hospital as a cover for a command centre, while Hamas denies the allegations.

Hostage negotiations in flux: Netanyahu signals potential deal while Hamas announces suspension of talks

Israel has reportedly launched attacks targeting hospitals in Gaza. The nation&nbsp;launched air strikes on or near at least three hospitals on Friday, said a spokesperson for the Gaza Health Ministry.

These attacks are further stressing the Palestinian enclave's already struggling health system.

<h2>Simultaneous strikes&nbsp;</h2>

"The Israeli occupation launched simultaneous strikes on a number of hospitals during the past hours," said Ashraf Al-Qidra, spokesperson for the Gaza Ministry of Health, while talking to Al Jazeera.

Al Shifa, the hospital Israel had alleged was being used by Hamas to hide its command centres and tunnels, is one of the hospitals being attacked, reports Reuters. Hamas militants have denied Israel's allegations.

The spokesperson for the Hamas-led Ministry of Health also claimed that Israel targeted Gaza City's medical complex's courtyard and that casualties have been reported. However, he did not provide any further details.

Qidra also said that the Al-Rantisi Paediatric Hospital and Al-Nasr Children's Hospital "have been witnessing a series of direct attacks and bombardments" on Friday.&nbsp;

He stated that the Israeli strikes on Al-Rantisi's hospital grounds had set vehicles on fire, which were partly extinguished later.

US Presidential race contender Ron DeSantis has claimed credit for saving lives and&nbsp;limiting the number of hostages&nbsp;militant group Hamas kidnapped during its October 7 attack.

Speaking during the Republican presidential debate, the Florida Governor said that there would've been more hostages if he hadn't stepped in to arrange evacuation for 700 people.

<h2>'We acted, and we saved lives'</h2>

DeSantis claimed that after the initial Hamas attack, there would have been a higher number of hostages. He said that Florida citizens were also under attack and US President Joe Biden "left them stranded".&nbsp;

"We had Floridians that were over there after the attack. [Biden] left them stranded. They couldn’t get flights out. I scrambled resources in Florida. I sent planes over to Israel, and I brought back over 700 people to safety. There could've been more hostages had we not acted," said DeSantis.&nbsp;

"We acted, and we saved lives," he added.

As per The Times of Israel, Hamas militants did not kidnap anyone after the initial October 7 attack. So it is unclear why DeSantis said that the charter flights he helped organise&nbsp;"prevented additional hostages from being taken into Gaza".

<h2>Did the Biden administration abandon citizens?</h2>

The Biden administration arranged a number of charter flights out of Israel for its citizens. These flights started on October 13, chartering Americans from Tel Aviv to Athens.&nbsp;

With demands for flights falling sharply, its last planned charter flight, as per a Reuters report, was on Tuesday (Oct 31).

"It is purely a demand issue... We have consistently seen the demand for our charter flights go down," said State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller during a press briefing on Monday (Oct 30).

Miller also said that the nation will continue to assess the situation and if "circumstances change on the ground" they will see if they "need to make additional arrangements."
