Hillary Clinton, the former US secretary of state, has said that students who support Palestine on college campuses throughout the country lack knowledge of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict's history.

Pro-Palestinian protests have been happening on college campuses&nbsp;after Israel attacked Gaza in response to the October 7 attack by Hamas, but in recent weeks, the level of activity has dramatically escalated.

On Thursday, Clinton on MSNBC's Morning Joe said that the continuing protests are being driven by a lack of understanding of "the history of the Middle East," adding that young people are also ignorant of American history.

"I have had many conversations, as you have had, with a lot of young people over the last many months now. They don't know very much at all about the history of the Middle East. Or, frankly, about history in many areas of the world, including in our own country," Clinton said.

Clinton went on to recall her husband, former president Bill Clinton, trying to mediate a "two-state solution" agreement between the Israeli government and the then-dominant Palestinian Authority during the 2000 Camp David Summit.

The former first lady referred to the non-agreement of former Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat as "one of the great tragedies of history" and emphasised that a Palestinian state would have been in place for many years had an agreement been achieved.

Clinton stated that Arafat "wanted" to sign the pact but was "pretty sure he'd be killed" by Hamas militants, citing the assassinations of former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and former Egyptian President Anwar Sadat as examples of extremists pursuing peace.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict's historical settlement efforts were described by the former secretary of state as "a very important piece of history to comprehend if you're going to take any kind of position concerning what's going on right now."

Clinton said that pro-Hamas "propaganda" on social media and in the classroom may have tricked college demonstrators, adding that young people are receiving material that frequently has a hidden "agenda" or are without "any kind of context."

"Propaganda is not education. Propaganda, whether it's on TikTok or in the classroom, is actually the opposite of education. Anybody who is teaching in a university, or anyone who is putting content on social media, should be held responsible for what they include and what they exclude," Clinton said.

"So much of what we're seeing—particularly on TikTok—about what's going on in the Middle East, is woefully false. But it's also incredibly slanted: pro-Hamas, anti-Israel. And it is not any place where anyone should go to get information on complex manners, like what's going on there," she added.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Wednesday (May 1) promised he would break his nation's diplomatic&nbsp;relations with Israel over the warring nation's actions in Gaza.&nbsp;

<h2>A 'genocidal' leader</h2>

Petro told a May Day rally in Bogotá, "Here in front of you, the government of change, of the president of the republic announces that tomorrow we will break diplomatic relations with the state of Israel… for having a government, for having a president who is genocidal."

As per the Times of Israel, it is unclear if he used the word "genocidal" to refer to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or President Isaac Herzog, who serves a largely symbolic role.

Columbia University made the decision to transition to virtual classes after the arrest of over 100&nbsp;during protests against Israel on its campus.&nbsp;

In a statement posted on the University's website on Monday, President Nemat Minouche Shafik asserted that she is "deeply saddened by what is happening on our campus", adding that the classes would take place on virtual mode to “de-escalate the rancor and give us all a chance to consider next steps.”

In an effort to achieve this, the university opted to conduct classes remotely, in order&nbsp;to quell the discord.&nbsp;

While essential personnel are still required to fulfill their duties on-site in accordance with university policy, faculty and staff have been strongly advised to work remotely as a precautionary measure.

"Our preference is that students who do not live on campus will not come to campus," the president stated.

The decision to move to virtual instruction follows mounting concerns raised by various organisations and Jewish leaders regarding reports of anti-semitic incidents and derogatory actions occurring on and around the university grounds. Amidst these alarming developments, a campus rabbi (a Jewish scholar or teacher) even advised Jewish students to return home to ensure their safety.

President Shafik outlined the university's commitment to resolving the ongoing crisis through collaborative efforts involving administrators, a working group comprising deans and faculty members, and engagement with student protestors.&nbsp;

"That includes continuing discussions with the student protestors and identifying actions we can take as a community to enable us to peacefully complete the term and return to respectful engagement with each other," she stated.

An Israeli airstrike at a refugee camp in central Gaza on Tuesday (Apr 16) claimed the lives of 11 Palestinians, including children.

The airstrike, as per Palestinian health officials and Hamas media, hit the Al-Maghazi refugee camp.

<h2>Horror stories emerge from Al-Maghazi refugee camp</h2>

Crying over the body of her son Mohammad, Wafaa Issa Al-Nouri, whose husband was also killed in the airstrike, said: "My brothers were sitting by the door, my brother was wounded, and his cousin too, and I lost my son, I do not have a house, nor a husband, nor anything anymore".

"He was playing by the door. We didn't do anything. I swear we didn't do anything," she said sobbing.

In another refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip, the Al-Nusseirat camp, residents, as per Reuters, said Israeli planes bombed and destroyed four multi-storey residential buildings the same day.

<h2>Rafah trembles in fear</h2>

This comes, as on Tuesday (Apr 16), Israeli tanks pushed into parts of the northern Gaza Strip. Warplanes conducted airstrikes on Rafah, the Palestinians' last refuge in the south of the territory, killing and wounding several people, reports Reuters citing medics and residents.

In Rafah, another Israeli airstrike killed four people and wounded several others, said the health authorities.

Just before midnight, an airstrike on a house in Rafah also claimed the lives of seven people, including children, and wounded many others.

The city which borders Egypt is currently sheltering over half of Gaza's 2.3 million people, who as per reports are bracing for a planned Israeli ground offensive.

<h2>Israel - Hamas peace talks&nbsp;</h2>

Six months into the war between Israel and militant group Hamas, there is still no sign of any breakthrough in the US-backed, Qatar- and Egypt-led talks to clinch a ceasefire deal in Gaza. This is because both Israel and Hamas continue to stick to their mutually irreconcilable conditions.

As per data from the Palestinian health ministry, since the start of the conflict on Oct 7, 2023, more than 33,000 Palestinians, including 46 in the past 24 hours, have been killed by Israeli fire.

Israel targeting refugee camps? 11, including children, dead in airstrike on Al-Maghazi refugee camp

Too frightened to travel on dangerous roads that lead to their graveyards in Gaza, Palestinian Christians are lowering their loved ones into the ground in Muslim cemeteries amid the chaos of war between Israel and Hamas.

"I've been working at this cemetery for almost 10 years and this is the first time in my life," said Ihsan al-Natour, a worker at the Tal al-Sultan cemetery, where a man picked up a shrouded body and placed it inside a grave as a small child watched.

"Never have I seen a Christian being buried in a Muslim grave, but because of this war, we had no choice but to bury him here."

Since the war broke out six months ago, Israel bombardments have killed more than 33,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, according to figures from the Gaza health ministry. Some people have lost entire families.

Much of the coastal enclave has been turned into a wasteland, with buildings reduced to rubble and dust. Badly damaged hospitals cannot cope with the casualties, while hunger and possible famine add to the misery.

Travel along roads that could get bombed or shelled only increases the anguish for people trying to bury their dead. Israel has yet to allow residents of northern Gaza, where the Christian cemetery is located, to return home.

Al-Natour said Tal al-Sultan cemetery received the body of a Christian man named Hani Suheil Abu Dawood because it was too dangerous for his family to travel amid the siege. They were unable to say goodbye to him properly.

"So we've buried him here at the Tal al-Sultan cemetery. We don't discriminate between Muslims or Christians here. He's buried amongst Muslims and there are no signs that indicate he is Christian," he said.

Cooperation between Christians and Muslims is not unusual in Gaza.

"I have to take care of him because he is Christian. We have to protect God's creations on this earth," said al-Natour.

"He is a human being, we respect human beings and appreciate humanity and we love every person on earth. It is not in our nature as Muslims to hate humanity."

The war erupted on Oct. 7 when Hamas gunmen burst into Israel from Gaza and killed 1,200 people, according to official Israeli figures, triggering the Israeli assault.

The cemetery is likely to receive many more people as the Palestinian death toll rises every day.

Chaos of Gaza war forces Christians to bury dead in Muslim cemeteries

The Israeli army has been using artificial intelligence (AI) to identify targets for its bombing spree in Gaza, revealed a report on Wednesday (Apr 3).

According to an investigation by +972 Magazine and Local Call, the Israeli AI-based tool, named "Lavender," had a 10 per cent error rate.

<h2>Who developed Lavender?</h2>

As per the investigation, 'Lavender' was developed by Unit 8200, the Israel Defense Forces' elite intelligence division.

Unit 8200, the Israeli Intelligence Corps unit of the Israel Defense Forces responsible for clandestine operations, is comparable to the United States's National Security Agency or GCHQ in the United Kingdom.

<h2>How does Lavender work?</h2>

The Lavender system is said to mark suspected operatives in the military wings of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) as potential bombing targets, including low-ranking individuals.&nbsp;

The software analyses data collected through mass surveillance on most of Gaza's 2.3 million residents, assessing and ranking the likelihood of each person's involvement in the military wing of Hamas or PIJ.

Individuals are given a rating of 1 to 100, indicating their likelihood of being a militant.

Lavender learns to identify characteristics of known operatives from Hamas and PIJ and then identifies similar characteristics among the general population. Individuals with multiple incriminating features are assigned higher ratings, making them potential targets for assassination.

<h2>How accurate is it?</h2>

As per the report, even though the AI machine has an error rate of 10 per cent, its outputs were treated "as if it were a human decision".

Citing six Israeli intelligence officials involved in the alleged programme, the investigation revealed that during the initial stages of the conflict in Gaza, the military heavily relied on Lavender. It identified as many as 37,000 (most of them junior) Palestinians as suspected militants for potential airstrikes and assassination.

These officials said that the outputs of the AI machine were treated "as if it were a human decision," and alleged that the human review of the suggested targets was cursory at best.

Reportedly, the approval "to automatically adopt Lavender's kill lists" was given about two weeks into the war. Before that, they were only treated as an "auxiliary tool".

This approval was granted after an intelligence officer manually checked the accuracy of a random sample of several hundred targets selected by the AI system and found that Lavender's results had 90 per cent accuracy in identifying targets.

"From that moment, sources said that if Lavender decided an individual was a militant in Hamas, they were essentially asked to treat that as an order, with no requirement to independently check why the machine made that choice or to examine the raw intelligence data on which it is based," reports the publication.

A senior official identified as 'B' confirmed that officers were not required to review the AI system's assessments "in order to save time and enable the mass production of human targets without hindrances".

"Everything was statistical, everything was neat — it was very dry," he noted.

"In war, there is no time to incriminate every target. So you’re willing to take the margin of error of using artificial intelligence, risking collateral damage and civilians dying, and risking attacking by mistake, and to live with it," said another officer.

<h2>Civilian casualties and 'collateral damage'</h2>

As per the report, two sources also alleged that the Israeli army, in an unprecedented move, decided during the first weeks of the war that for every junior Hamas operative that Lavender marked, it was permissible to kill up to 15 or 20 civilians. Before that, the military did not authorise any "collateral damage" during assassinations of low-ranking militants.&nbsp;

For targets that were a senior Hamas official with the rank of battalion or brigade commander, the army reportedly on several occasions authorised the killing of more than 100 civilians per assassination.

The report alleges that to assassinate the junior militants, the Israeli army preferred to only&nbsp;use "dumb" bombs.&nbsp;

Dumb bombs are unguided missiles that can&nbsp;destroy entire buildings on top of their occupants and cause significant casualties. These were used instead of 'smart' precision bombs because "you don’t want to waste expensive bombs on unimportant people — it’s very expensive for the country and there’s a shortage [of those bombs]," an intelligence officer identified as 'C' told the publication.

Another source told&nbsp;+972 magazine that they had personally authorised the bombing of "hundreds" of private homes of alleged junior operatives that the AI tool&nbsp;Lavender had&nbsp;marked. These attacks killed many civilians, ending entire families, all labelled as mere "collateral damage".

One source said that they nicknamed low-ranking militants on the AI kill lists 'garbage targets,' but said these were "more ethical than the targets that we bombed just for 'deterrence' — highrises that are evacuated and toppled just to cause destruction."

Civilian casualties and 'collateral damage' As per the report, two sources also alleged that the Israeli army, in an unprecedented move, decided during the first weeks of the war that for every junior Hamas operative that Lavender marked, it was permissible to kill up to 15 or 20 civilians. Before that, the military did not authorise any "collateral damage" during assassinations of low-ranking militants. For targets that were a senior Hamas official with the rank of battalion or brigade commander, the army reportedly on several occasions authorised the killing of more than 100 civilians per assassination. The report alleges that to assassinate the junior militants, the Israeli army preferred to only use "dumb" bombs. Watch: Joint World Bank-UN report pegs Gaza's damages at $18.5 billion Dumb bombs are unguided missiles that can destroy entire buildings on top of their occupants and cause significant casualties. These were used instead of 'smart' precision bombs because "you don’t want to waste expensive bombs on unimportant people — it’s very expensive for the country and there’s a shortage [of those bombs]," an intelligence officer identified as 'C' told the publication. Another source told +972 magazine that they had personally authorised the bombing of "hundreds" of private homes of alleged junior operatives that the AI tool Lavender had marked. These attacks killed many civilians, ending entire families, all labelled as mere "collateral damage". One source said that they nicknamed low-ranking militants on the AI kill lists 'garbage targets,' but said these were "more ethical than the targets that we bombed just for 'deterrence' — highrises that are evacuated and toppled just to cause destruction." Japan on Tuesday said it will lift its suspension of funding to the UN&nbsp;Palestinian refugee agency (UNRWA) as the relief body works to regain trust after an allegation by Israel that some of its staff were involved in Oct. 7 attacks on Israel.

Tokyo and 15 other countries suspended around $450 million in funding earlier this year while the agency conducted an investigation into the allegation, throwing its operations in the war-torn Gaza Strip into turmoil.

Countries including Australia and Canada have since restored funding to UNRWA, the largest relief body operating in Gaza, which has been besieged by Israel since the attack.

Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa, who met UNRWA head Philippe Lazzarini in Tokyo last week, said the agency's role in addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza was indispensable even as it works to improve governance and manage risks.

Israel's Supreme Court on Thursday (Mar 28) ordered the country's government to stop funding religious schools whose students don't follow Israel's mandatory military service. This comes as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked the top court to defer by 30 days a deadline that gave his government until March 31 to come up with a new military conscription plan.&nbsp;

The plan is intended to address mainstream anger at exemptions granted to ultra-Orthodox Jews.

The favour of the ultra-Orthodox population — approximately 13 per cent of Israel's population — is important for Netanyahu. Two ultra-Orthodox parties have been coalition partners in successive Netanyahu-led governments, and the apex court's order can pose a serious threat to the PM's governing coalition.

<h2>The conscription controversy</h2>

Israeli citizens are by law required to serve in the military and most Jewish men&nbsp;serve nearly three years in the military, followed by years of reserve duty, the women serve two mandatory years. &nbsp;

However, some citizens are exempt from this mandatory service. This includes ultra-Orthodox Jews (13 per cent of Israel's population) and the Arab minority (21 per cent of Israel's population).

While, as per Reuters, military conscriptions of ultra-Orthodox Haredi Jews is a decades-old controversy, it has become especially sensitive these days.&nbsp;

Due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, the nation's armed forces, made up mostly of teenaged conscripts and older civilians mobilised for reserve duty, have been waging a nearly six-month-old war in the Gaza Strip.

Reuters reports that as per a senior Israeli official's estimates, only about five per cent of the nation's population was taking part in the Gaza war.&nbsp;

On Monday, a government-issued stay on mandatory conscription of the ultra-Orthodox will expire.

He has worked at the World Bank in Washington and has been in charge of Palestinian telecoms company Paltel and, more recently, the PA's public Palestine Investment Fund (PIF).

He is a member of the executive committee of the Abbas-led Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), which recognised Israel at the start of the peace process in 1993, hoping to establish a Palestinian state in territories captured by Israel in a 1967 war - the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem.

As per Reuters, more than a decade ago, after a previous conflict, he helped organise the reconstruction of Gaza.&nbsp;

The ship carrying aid for Gaza residents caught in the crossfire between Israel and Hamas is nearing its destination. This comes as the EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said that starvation is being employed as a tool of warfare.

Meanwhile, faced with international pressure, Israel said it was trying to "flood" the Gaza Strip with humanitarian aid.

<h2>A man-made disaster</h2>

In Gaza, after more than five months of the war, the population of around 2.3 million is increasingly facing a growing risk of famine. Aid agencies have called for food supplies to be stepped up and have accused Israel of not doing enough to ensure aid reaches the people.

Borrell, on Tuesday (Mar 12), told the UN security council in New York that the lack of aid reaching Gaza was a man-made disaster.&nbsp;

"We are now facing a population fighting for their own survival," he said, adding, "[The humanitarian crisis is] man-made, and when we look for alternative ways of providing support by sea, by air, we have to remind [ourselves] that we have to do it because the natural way of providing support through roads is being … artificially closed."

"Starvation is being used as a war arm, and when we condemned this happening in Ukraine, we have to use the same words for what is happening in Gaza," he alleged.

In a tragic incident last year, Reuters journalist Issam Abdallah was killed in Lebanon when an Israeli tank fired two 120 mm rounds at a group of journalists. This, a UN investigation has now revealed, violated international law.

<h2>A clear violation</h2>

The investigation, conducted by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), concluded that the Israeli Merkava tank targeted "clearly identifiable journalists" without any exchange of fire along the border between Israel and Lebanon for over 40 minutes before the incident.

"The firing at civilians, in this instance clearly identifiable journalists, constitutes a violation of UNSCR 1701 (2006) and international law," states the UNIFIL report dated Feb 27.

Reuters, which has been privy to the UNIFIL report, further quotes it as saying: "It is assessed that there was no exchange of fire across the Blue Line at the time of the incident. The reason for the strikes on the journalists is not known."

The tank rounds which killed Issam Abdallah also injured six other journalists present at the scene.

<h2>IDF refutes charges</h2>

Responding to questions about the UNIFIL report, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson Nir Dinar said that the IDF had retaliated against an attack by Hezbollah near Hanita on Oct 13.&nbsp;

"The IDF deplores any injury to uninvolved parties, and does not deliberately shoot at civilians, including journalists," Dinar emphasised.&nbsp;

"The IDF considers the freedom of the press to be of utmost importance while clarifying that being in a war zone is dangerous." <h2>Reuters calls for action</h2>

Reuters Editor-in-Chief Alessandra Galloni has called for an explanation from Israel and hold those responsible accountable.

The UNIFIL report, as per Reuters citing two sources in the know, was submitted to the United Nations on Feb&nbsp;28, and has been shared with the Lebanese and Israeli militaries.

"(The) IDF should conduct an investigation into the incident and a full review of their procedures at the time to avoid a recurrence," it recommends.

"The IDF should share their investigation's findings with UNIFIL."

The UNIFIL report, as per Reuters citing two sources in the know, was submitted to the United Nations on Feb 28, and has been shared with the Lebanese and Israeli militaries. "(The) IDF should conduct an investigation into the incident and a full review of their procedures at the time to avoid a recurrence," it recommends. UN report finds Israel's killing of journalist in Lebanon a clear violation of international law

Amid growing concerns over alleged mistreatment of medical staff in Gaza following an Israeli raid, a UK Foreign Office minister has called for a thorough investigation into the matter.

<h2>'A full explanation'</h2>

Responding to inquiries from Labour MP Bethan Winter, Foreign Office minister Andrew Mitchell, as reported by The Guardian, has affirmed the UK government's push for "a full explanation and investigation" into the alleged mistreatment of medical staff.&nbsp;As per media reports, the Israeli raid, which began on February 15, targeted Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, Gaza's largest functioning medical facility.&nbsp;

Emphasising the importance of upholding international humanitarian law, he added: "When it comes to targeting operations there are lawyers embedded in the Israeli and the IDF command, just as there are in Britain, and that should ensure that the acceptance and honouring of international humanitarian law is kept, but I agree with [Winters] a full explanation is required."

<h2>The purported raids</h2>

Reports from doctors allege that Israel Defense Forces (IDF) ground troops stormed the hospital, cutting off access routes and shelling its premises. Because of the assault, patients, medical staff, and displaced civilians taking shelter at the hospital were forced to flee.&nbsp;

Tragically, at least 13 patients died because of the lack of electricity necessary to operate life-saving equipment like ventilators.

The IDF defended the raid as "precise and limited," citing intelligence suggesting Hamas militants were using the hospital as a base.

Subsequently, about 200 individuals — including dozens of medics from Nasser, as per a BBC investigation published on Tuesday (March 12) — were detained during the operation.

<h2>Disturbing accounts from the raid</h2>

Disturbing accounts have emerged. As per The Guardian, its sources have described brutal treatment, including beatings and humiliating acts during detention.&nbsp;

One doctor even recounted being blindfolded, stripped to his underwear, and subjected to physical violence, including an incident where his hand was broken by an interrogator.

While the IDF did not address specific allegations, they denied any harm to medical staff, stressing that mistreatment of detainees goes against their orders.

<h2>Not good enough</h2>

Sacha Deshmukh, CEO of Amnesty International UK, expressed dissatisfaction with Mitchell's remarks, and said: "It's not good enough for Andrew Mitchell to say the UK will press the Israeli authorities to investigate these harrowing allegations."

"We know from years of so-called 'investigations' conducted by the Israeli military authorities into abuses committed by their forces in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, that there’s a vanishingly small prospect of there being any accountability whatsoever," said Deshmukh.

"The UK must get firmly behind efforts by the international criminal court and the International Court of Justice to properly examine the growing catalogue of atrocities in Gaza."

Previously, an internal UN report had revealed widespread abuse of Palestinian detainees, including beatings and sexual assault.

UK seeks 'full explanation' from Israel on Gaza hospital raid amid reports of mistreatment of doctors

Israel on Monday (Mar 11) launched fresh airstrikes on what it said were&nbsp;Hezbollah sites near Lebanon's eastern city of Baalbek marking the second raid in the region since cross-border hostilities began after the Gaza war.

<h2>Fatalities</h2>

As per&nbsp;an agency AFP report citing security sources, the strikes had killed one person and injured others.

Bashir Khader, the governor of Baalbek, also confirmed the strikes and the fatality after Israel launched four strikes, reports Reuters.

Reportedly, one of the strikes hit the southern entrance to the city of Baalbek, at least 2 km (1.24 miles) from ancient Roman ruins, the security sources said.

The three other strikes hit near the city of Taraya, 20 km (12.4 miles) west of Baalbek, they added.

AFP, on the other hand, reported that "Israeli aircraft targeted a former Hezbollah building near Dar Al Amal hospital." The news agency's security source also said that Israel had "conducted another raid on a warehouse west of Baalbek".

Lebanon's state-run National News Agency (NNA) also reported Israeli airstrikes, saying they "targeted a residential building in the town of Ansar … south of Baalbek".&nbsp;

"Fire and plumes of smoke could be seen rising from the targeted location," it added.

Israel launches airstrikes against Hezbollah targets near Lebanon's Baalbek, one killed

The first day of Ramadan on Monday arrived like others for Palestinians in war-ravaged Gaza: stalked by famine and disease, shivering in tents and threatened by bombs more than five months into fighting between Israel and Hamas militants.

As the Muslim world welcomed the holy month and its customary daytime fast, many Gazans faced bombardment that saw residents once more search through the rubble of destroyed homes for survivors and bodies.

A UN report, citing the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza, said 25 people have now died from malnutrition and dehydration, most of them children.

"We are running out of time," Cindy McCain, head of the World Food Programme (WFP), said on Monday. "If we do not exponentially increase the size of aid going into the northern areas" of Gaza, she said, "famine is imminent."

The United Nations has reported particular difficulty in accessing northern Gaza for deliveries of food and other aid.

Gazans throughout the territory are feeling shortages even more during Ramadan.

"We don't know what we are going to eat to break the fast," Zaki Abu Mansour, 63, said inside his tent. "I have only a tomato and a cucumber... and I have no money to buy anything."

Any goods that are available are sold at exorbitant prices, residents say.

Fighting raged across Gaza, even as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for "silencing the guns" during the Muslim holy month and said he was "appalled and outraged that conflict is continuing".

Guterres also appealed for the removal of "all obstacles" to aid delivery.

<h2>Israeli screening</h2>

With aid entering Gaza by truck far below pre-war levels, and Gazans increasingly desperate, foreign governments have turned to airdrops and are now trying to operate a maritime aid corridor.

Jose Andres said his American charity World Central Kitchen and its partner Open Arms are "ready to sail for Gaza" from Cyprus with food aid on the new maritime corridor which the European Union had hoped could open last Sunday.

"There have been many statements made about the maritime corridor being open, and the timeline," Andres said on social media platform X. "WCK never announced departure dates."

A senior US administration official has said the Cyprus initiative provides a platform at the port of Larnaca for "screening by Israeli officials of Gaza-bound goods".

Cypriot government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said "this is an initiative, the complexity of which requires both due care and attention so that the ship can depart and the cargo can safely reach the civilian population of Gaza".

Israel's cumbersome screenings are a major reason current shortages are so glaring, aid workers say.

Israel, however, blames problems on the Palestinian side, saying the "ability of humanitarian organisations within the Gaza Strip to absorb the aid" dictates how much of it is let in.

Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, Israel's military spokesman, on Monday said a weekend air strike on an underground compound in central Gaza had targeted Marwan Issa, deputy head of Hamas's armed wing.

Results of the strike were still being examined, he said, and it was unclear if Issa was killed.

Hamas authorities reported at least 67 people killed since Sunday, with more than 40 air strikes across the territory.

<h2>Meagre decorations</h2>

Hamas's October 7 attack that started the war resulted in about 1,160 deaths in Israel, mostly civilians, according to an AFP count based on Israeli official figures.

The militants also took around 250 hostages, dozens of whom were released during a week-long truce in November. Israel believes 99 hostages still in Gaza remain alive and 31 have died.

Israel's retaliatory bombardment and ground offensive has killed 31,112 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to Gaza's health ministry.

The United States and other countries again airdropped aid into northern Gaza on Monday, but outgoing Palestinian prime minister Mohammed Shtayyeh said it could be delivered more efficiently via five land borders.

Humanitarian workers have made similar comments.

Weeks of talks involving US, Qatari and Egyptian mediators failed to bring about a truce and hostage exchange deal ahead of Ramadan.

Despite widespread deprivation, some Gazans found ways to celebrate Ramadan's start, fashioning meagre decorations and distributing traditional lanterns between their tents.

In Rafah, dozens of Gazans offered prayers on Ramadan's first day in the ruins of a mosque hit by an Israeli air strike just days ago.

Tens of thousands of worshippers are drawn every Ramadan to the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem -- Islam's third holiest site and the most sacred for Jews.

The site has been a flashpoint of tensions in the past and is again a focus.

<h2>A sea of tents</h2>

In Washington, President Joe Biden, facing domestic criticism in an election year for his steadfast support of Israel, said that as Muslims around the world gather to break their fast, "the suffering of the Palestinian people will be front of mind for many. It is front of mind for me."

The United States provides billions of dollars in military aid to Israel, and Biden's administration has given short shrift to activist calls to cut such funding.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is under pressure from desperate families of hostages still held in Gaza as well as critics of his government, a coalition including religious and ultra-nationalist parties.

In an interview with Politico, he reiterated his intention to send troops into Rafah to root out Hamas in Gaza's southernmost tip where around 1.5 million people -- most of Gaza's population -- have tried to find refuge.

"We'll go there," he said, adding that his "red line" is that "October 7 doesn't happen again".

Many of Rafah's displaced are sheltered in a sea of makeshift tents. They sat on the ground between the structures, under a string of decorative lights, to break their fast on the first day of Ramadan.

Ramadan in Gaza: UN warns of famine as residents scramble for aid

An aid ship loaded with 200 tonnes of essential food supplies, aimed at mitigating the looming famine in the Gaza Strip, remained docked in Cyprus on Sunday night. This delay comes as the urgency to provide maritime aid builds amid stalled ceasefire talks and the onset of Ramadan.

<h2>When will the vessel depart?</h2>

According to Cyprus government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis, the vessel's departure schedule would not be disclosed for security reasons.

However, reports indicate&nbsp;that "technical issues" might further postpone its departure until Monday morning.

As per The Guardian, the World Central Kitchen (WCK), along with the Spanish charity Open Arms, had coordinated the delivery of rice, flour, lentils, beans, and canned fish and meat via an Open Arms vessel from Larnaca to Gaza. Most of this aid, as per Reuters, is funded by the UAE.

However, as of Sunday evening, the boat remained anchored in Cyprus. Letymbiotis said that the cargo had undergone inspection by Cypriot officials under an Israel-approved plan.

Although WCK spokesperson Linda Roth refrained from providing detailed logistical information due to the "evolving and fluid situation," she mentioned that Open Arms, accompanied by a barge, would set sail at the earliest opportunity.&nbsp;

Roth also said that the charities were prepared to dispatch an additional 500 tonnes of aid, funded by the UAE, with preparations underway for a floating jetty to receive the aid.

<h2>Gaza and humanitarian aid</h2>

As the humanitarian crisis in Gaza builds, international players, as per media reports, have been scrambling to find alternative routes to supply aid.

The delay in the aid ship's departure underscores the challenges of delivering assistance to Gaza via unconventional means.&nbsp;

The shallow waters along the Gaza Strip shoreline and the lack of functioning ports pose significant obstacles to maritime operations. It also raises uncertainties about how the new "sea highway" will impact the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.

<h2>US' temporary pier</h2>

Officials in Washington, as per the report, have disclosed that a US military vessel carrying equipment for constructing a secondary temporary pier in Gaza was en route to the Mediterranean. However, they cautioned that it could take weeks before the facility became operational.

Israel has faced repeated allegations of inadequate facilitation of humanitarian aid to Gaza's population of 2.3 million.&nbsp;

This 'open arms' mission, if successful, would effectively signal the first easing of an Israeli naval blockade imposed on Gaza in 2007 after Hamas took control of the Palestinian enclave.

Most of this aid, as per Reuters, is funded by the UAE. However, as of Sunday evening, the boat remained anchored in Cyprus. Letymbiotis said that the cargo had undergone inspection by Cypriot officials under an Israel-approved plan. Although WCK spokesperson Linda Roth refrained from providing detailed logistical information due to the "evolving and fluid situation," she mentioned that Open Arms, accompanied by a barge, would set sail at the earliest opportunity. Roth also said that the charities were prepared to dispatch an additional 500 tonnes of aid, funded by the UAE, with preparations underway for a floating jetty to receive the aid. Ship carrying 200 tonnes of essential food supplies to Gaza stuck in Cyprus due to 'technical issues'

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday (Mar 10) asserted that among the nearly 31,000 Palestinians killed during the ongoing Israel conflict with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, at least 13,000 were "terrorists".&nbsp;With this claim, he vowed to continue the offensive in the southern part of the enclave, an action that US President Joe Biden has recently labelled as his "red line".

<h2>Casualties of war</h2>

As per a Reuters report, while the Gaza health ministry does not provide a breakdown of civilian versus militant casualties, it notes that 72 per cent of those killed were women and children. Furthermore, Hamas disputes Israel's figures for militants, dismissing them as attempts aimed at "fake victories".

At least 13,000 of 31,000 Palestinians killed during Gaza war are terrorists, claims Israeli PM Netanyahu

Dozens of Muslim worshippers gathered at New York Times Square on Sunday (Mar 10) to observe the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, with some showing solidarity with the people in Gaza by displaying Palestinian flags.&nbsp;

The gatherers, as per an AFP report, performed special Ramadan night prayers called Taraweeh.

<h2>Come ye faithful</h2>

Despite the cold and windy conditions, more than 100 faithful gathered for the prayer meeting, with a vocalist chanting Nasheeds and children reciting from the Qur'an, copies of which were offered to both Muslims and curious passers-by.

Ramadan begins: Muslims in Times Square hold prayer vigil, show solidarity with Gaza

Even as thousands died to Israeli retaliatory fire on Gaza, the United States, as per a damning report, made over 100 weapons sales to Israel, including thousands of bombs, since the start of the Israel-Hamas war.&nbsp;

The war which began on Oct 7 with militant group Hamas'&nbsp;cross-border attack on Israel has to date claimed around 31,200 lives — 1,200 Israelis that were killed in the initial Hamas attack and around 30,000 Palestinians.

<h2>US' clandestine weapon sales to Israel</h2>

As per a Washington Post report, since the start of the Gaza war, the US has made over 100 weapon&nbsp;sales to Israel. These transactions, however, escaped congressional approval due to a loophole — their individual amounts were below the threshold requiring such oversight.

This revelation comes as the Biden administration has increasingly been publicly critical of Israel's military operations in Gaza and its limited humanitarian aid access.

Apparently, even as America voiced humanitarian concerns, it has quietly continued to provide substantial munitions to replace the tens and thousands of bombs dropped on the Gaza Strip.

As per the Washington Post report, administration officials were recently informed of these sales via a classified briefing.&nbsp;

Only a few details of these sales are known, because to keep them small, their contents were kept secret. Reportedly, these sales included precision-guided munitions, small-diameter bombs, bunker busters, small arms, and other lethal aid.

<h2>US Arms Export Control Law</h2>

As per The Guardian, the Arms Export Control Act allows exceptions for arms sales to close allies, with a limit of $25 million for "major defence equipment" and $100 million for other "defence articles" like bombs.&nbsp;

Ari Tolany, director of the security assistance monitor at the Center for International Policy, a think tank, criticised this loophole as an attempt to avoid transparency and accountability.

"This doesn’t just seem like an attempt to avoid technical compliance with US arms export law, it’s an extremely troubling way to avoid transparency and accountability on a high-profile issue," she said.

The Biden administration's actions compare to those of the Trump administration, which as per findings of the State Department Office of the Inspector General made thousands of below-threshold arms transfers to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, totalling an estimated $11.2 billion.

In exploiting this loophole, "They're very much borrowing from the Trump playbook to dodge congressional oversight," said Tolany.

These clandestine sales are besides the three major military sales publicly disclosed since the conflict's onset: $320 million worth of precision bomb kits in November and 14,000 tank shells valued at $106 million. Furthermore, $147.5 million was allocated for fuses and other components essential for the production of 155&nbsp;mm artillery shells in December.&nbsp;

Notably, the deliveries in December, which included tank and artillery shells, also evaded congressional scrutiny by being executed under emergency authority.&nbsp;

On Monday (Mar 4), Matthew Miller, the State Department spokesperson in a press briefing, said, "We continue to support Israel’s campaign to ensure that the attacks of 7 October cannot be repeated. We have provided military assistance to Israel because it is consistent with that goal."

"We support Israel’s legitimate military campaign consistent with international humanitarian law."

US exploited 'loophole' to quietly sell weapons to Israel amidst Gaza bloodshed: Report

After a UN report acknowledged that there were "reasonable grounds to believe" sexual violence, including rape and gang rape, occurred during the Oct&nbsp;7 attack by Hamas militants on Israel, another report has revealed harrowing details of abuse faced by Palestinians in Israeli detention centres.

Reportedly, Palestinians in Israeli detention have been subjected to torture including beatings, dog attacks, the prolonged use of stress positions and even sexual assault.

<h2>The UN report</h2>

As per The Guardian, this report has been compiled by the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine (UNRWA). It is largely based on interviews of Palestinian detainees who have been released at the Kerem Shalom crossing point since December.

The report has been "widely circulated" within the UN and was seen by the British publication. According to the UNRWA report, just over 1,000 detainees have been released since December, and another 3,000 remain in Israeli custody.

Its estimates show that since the start of the Gaza war, over 4,000 men, women, and children have been rounded up by Tel Aviv.

<h2>Methods of ill-treatment</h2>

As per the report, "Methods of ill-treatment reported included physical beatings, forced stress positions for extended periods of time, threats of harm to detainees and their families, attacks by dogs, insults to personal dignity and humiliation such as being made to act like animals or getting urinated on, use of loud music and noises, deprivation of water, food, sleep and toilets, denial of the right to practice their religion (to pray) and prolonged use of tightly locked handcuffs causing open wounds and friction injuries."

"The beatings included blunt force trauma to the head, shoulders, kidneys, neck, back and legs with metal bars and the butts of guns and boots, in some cases resulting in broken ribs, separated shoulders and lasting injuries," it alleges.

"While in an off-site location, several individuals reported being forced into cages and attacked by dogs, with some individuals, including a child exhibiting dog bite wounds on release."

Of the 1,002 detainees released since December, 29 were children as young as six years old. Others included 80 women and 21 UNRWA staff, some of whom had chronic conditions such as Alzheimer’s or cancer.

Denying the abuse allegations, Israel described them as "Hamas-inspired propaganda". The nation has also named 12 UNRWA staff, who it claims took part in the&nbsp;October 7 attack. It also claims that 450 of the UNRWA's 13,000 workers in Gaza are members of Hamas or other militant groups.

Beaten, attacked by dogs, raped: UN report alleges Palestinians suffering horrible abuse in Israeli detention

The United States military on Tuesday (March 5) carried out a fresh round of airdrop&nbsp;of humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza, delivering over 36,800 meals. This effort, as per Reuters, comes as the Joe Biden administration pushed&nbsp;for increased aid access during discussions with top Israeli officials in Washington.

<h2>Air dropped aid</h2>

The situation in Gaza is dire, with over 2.3 million people displaced due to the ongoing Israeli offensive, which is supported by the US. Already there are reports of people dying of malnutrition. As per the Hamas-controlled Health Ministry in Gaza, at least 15 children died in one hospital alone.&nbsp;

America made its first airdrop to Gaza on Saturday. The humanitarian aid was dropped over the coast of southwestern Gaza. &nbsp;

While air-dropped aid helps, US officials, as per Reuters, have warned that it is costly and not enough to meet the scale of the crisis.&nbsp;

The Biden administration is advocating for increased land access to provide humanitarian assistance.

Matt Miller, the US State Department spokesperson, described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as "horrific",&nbsp;with aid supplies dwindling to almost nothing over the past month.

Recently, during a meeting at the Pentagon, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin urged Benny Gantz, a member of Israel's war cabinet, to support increased humanitarian aid distribution in Gaza.

Speaking of the meeting, Air Force Major General Patrick Ryder said: "Secretary (Austin) expressed strong concerns over the humanitarian situation in Gaza and requested Minister Gantz’s support in enabling more humanitarian assistance and distribution into Gaza."

While Gantz did not comment at the Pentagon, he described his meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken as "very good".

<h2>Aid supplies running out</h2>

As per Reuters, aid supplies in Gaza have been sharply curtailed since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, and have dwindled to almost nothing&nbsp;in the past month.

In a post on X, President Joe Biden reiterated the US' commitment to providing aid to Gaza, and said his country is "committed to pulling out every stop to get more aid to those in Gaza who desperately need it."

"We won't stand by. We won't let up," he added.

As per the report, the United States has repeatedly urged Israel to do more to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where thousands of Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli assault launched in response to the&nbsp;Hamas attacks.

There is interest in establishing a maritime corridor for aid delivery to Gaza, however, logistical challenges remain, including how aid would be facilitated without a US military presence on the ground.

Pentagon spokesperson Ryder indicated that there are currently "no plans" to deploy US forces in Gaza for aid distribution purposes.

This effort, as per Reuters, comes as the Joe Biden administration pushed for increased aid access during discussions with top Israeli officials in Washington. Air dropped aid The situation in Gaza is dire, with over 2.3 million people displaced due to the ongoing Israeli offensive, which is supported by the US. Already there are reports of people dying of malnutrition. As per the Hamas-controlled Health Ministry in Gaza, at least 15 children died in one hospital alone. America made its first airdrop to Gaza on Saturday. The humanitarian aid was dropped over the coast of southwestern Gaza. The Biden administration is advocating for increased land access to provide humanitarian assistance. Matt Miller, the US State Department spokesperson, described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as "horrific", with aid supplies dwindling to almost nothing over the past month. Recently, during a meeting at the Pentagon, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin urged Benny Gantz, a member of Israel's war cabinet, to support increased humanitarian aid distribution in Gaza. Watch | Israel-Hamas War: 4 Nations airdrop aid, Gaza suffering persists Speaking of the meeting, Air Force Major General Patrick Ryder said: "Secretary (Austin) expressed strong concerns over the humanitarian situation in Gaza and requested Minister Gantz’s support in enabling more humanitarian assistance and distribution into Gaza." While Gantz did not comment at the Pentagon, he described his meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken as "very good". Aid supplies running out As per Reuters, aid supplies in Gaza have been sharply curtailed since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, and have dwindled to almost nothing in the past month. In a post on X, President Joe Biden reiterated the US' commitment to providing aid to Gaza, and said his country is "committed to pulling out every stop to get more aid to those in Gaza who desperately need it." "We won't stand by. We won't let up," he added. (With inputs from agencies)

Israel-Hamas war: US airdrops fresh round of humanitarian aid to Gaza; 36,800 meals delivered

A United Nations team of experts, led by special envoy Pramila Patten, on Monday, reported that there were "reasonable grounds to believe" sexual violence, including rape and gang rape, occurred during the Oct&nbsp;7 attack by Hamas militants on Israel.

The team conducted a mission in Israel from January 29 to February 14 to gather, analyse and verify information, and investigate allegations of sexual violence during the October 7 attacks.

<h2>UN findings</h2>

As per a 24-page UN report, there was "credible circumstantial information, which may be indicative of some forms of sexual violence, including genital mutilation, sexualised torture, or cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment."

"The mission team found clear and convincing information that some hostages taken to Gaza have been subjected to various forms of conflict-related sexual violence and has reasonable grounds to believe that such violence may be ongoing," said the report.

The UN team added that a "full-fledged investigation" is needed to determine these crimes' full extent and specific attribution.

<h2>Sexual violence against Palestinians</h2>

They also said that they have received reports of sexual violence against Palestinian men and women "in detention settings" — at centres located in Israel, "during house raids and at checkpoints" after Oct 7. Sources of these reports have been mentioned as institutional and civil society sources and direct interviews.

However, the team said that when the allegations were raised with Israel's Ministry of Justice and Military Advocate General, they were told that the authorities had not received any complaints of sexual violence by members of the Israel Defense Forces.

During the Oct&nbsp;7 attack, Hamas militants killed approximately 1,200 people and captured 253 hostages, according to Israeli reports. In retaliation, Israel's response in the Gaza Strip has resulted in the death&nbsp;of around 30,000 Palestinians, as reported by health authorities in the Hamas-run enclave.

<h2>Israel reacts to the UN report&nbsp;</h2>

Israeli Ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan strongly criticised the international body for its delayed recognition of sexual crimes.&nbsp;

He said that it took the UN five months to "finally recognise the horrifying sex crimes that occurred during the Hamas onslaught".

"Now that the report of the sexual atrocities and abuse that our hostages are going through in Gaza is being released, the shame of the silence of the UN — which is not even holding one hearing on the issue — is crying out to the heavens," Erdan stated.

In response to the UN's perceived inaction, Foreign Minister Israel Katz announced that he would recall Erdan to Israel for discussions on how to proceed.&nbsp;

Katz criticised UN Secretary-General António Guterres for failing to convene a meeting of the UN Security Council to "declare Hamas a terror group and place sanctions on its supporters," and said Israel was yet to hear "one word" from Guterres regarding the report.

"Guterres, wake up," he remarked.

However, Guterres's spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, refuted claims that the secretary-general was trying to suppress the report.&nbsp;

In a statement to AFP, Dujarric emphasised that the "work was done thoroughly and expeditiously. In no way, shape, or form did the secretary-general do anything to keep the report 'quiet'."

UN finds 'credible' evidence of sexual violence, including gang rapes, during Hamas attack on Israel

United States Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday issued the&nbsp;sharpest criticism to date of Israel by a top US official. Calling for an immediate ceasefire, she bluntly called out ally Israel for not doing enough to ease the "humanitarian catastrophe" in Gaza.

<h2>Ceasefire, suffering, and Gaza</h2>

During a speech in Selma, Alabama, Harris talked of the ceasefire deal&nbsp;that has been under discussion&nbsp;over the past few weeks, and said: "Given the immense scale of suffering in Gaza, there must be an immediate ceasefire for at least the next six weeks, which is what is currently on the table."

The US VP, who was speaking in front of the Edmund Pettus Bridge during an event marking the 59th anniversary of "Bloody Sunday",&nbsp;also urged Hamas to accept the ceasefire deal and release hostages in exchange.

"This will get the hostages out and get a significant amount of aid in," she said.

"Hamas claims it wants a ceasefire. Well, there is a deal on the table. And as we have said, Hamas needs to agree to that deal," she added.

Directing the bulk of her comments at Israel, Harris said that the conditions in Gaza were "inhumane" and Israel "must do more".

"People in Gaza are starving. The conditions are inhumane, and our common humanity compels us to act," she said, as quoted by Reuters.

Harris stressed, "The Israeli government must do more to significantly increase the flow of aid."

"No excuses," she remarked, adding that the warring nation "must open new border crossings" and "must not impose any unnecessary restrictions on the delivery of aid."

Kamala Harris issues US' sharpest rebuke yet, calls out Israel for the 'catastrophe', says it 'must do more'

US President Joe Biden on Monday expressed hope for a ceasefire in Gaza, which he said may happen by the beginning of next week.

This comes amidst escalating humanitarian concerns in the Palestinian territory. In recent days, representatives from Egypt, Qatar, the United States, and France have been mediating between Israel and Hamas, seeking to halt the violence and secure the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza.

<h2>The deal</h2>

As per an AFP report, a potential deal could involve the exchange of dozens of hostages for several hundred Palestinian detainees held by Israel.&nbsp;

During a visit to an ice cream shop in New York City with comedian Seth Meyers, when asked about when a ceasefire might start, Biden said that his national security advisor told him "We're close, we're close, we're not done yet."&nbsp;He expressed optimism that it could be achieved by next Monday.

"My hope is by next Monday we'll have a ceasefire," Biden said.

Previously, on Sunday, talking to CNN, White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan revealed that during the meeting in Paris, representatives from several parties, not including Gaza rulers Hamas, "came to an understanding... about what the basic contours of a hostage deal for a temporary ceasefire would look like."

Additionally, "experts" from Egypt, Qatar, and the US met in Doha for talks attended by Israeli and Hamas representatives, hoping to secure a truce before the onset of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

<h2>What Israel and Hamas said</h2>

However, talking to AFP, a Hamas source revealed that while "some new amendments" were proposed on contentious issues, "Israel did not present any substantive position on the terms of the ceasefire and the withdrawal from the Gaza Strip."

While the group is insisting on the withdrawal of Israeli forces, this demand has been dismissed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as "delusional". Instead, he has been adamant that a ceasefire, if reached, will only delay an incursion into Rafah.

In an interview with CBS Sunday, Netanyahu said that a ground invasion of Rafah, Gaza's southernmost city, would put Israel within weeks of "total victory" over Hamas.

The Israel Army on Monday (Feb 26) proposed a plan for "evacuating" civilians in the Gaza Strip. This evacuation plan which has been presented with an "operational plan" comes after the nation's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that a ground invasion of the Palestinian territory's southern city Rafah was necessary for Israel's "total victory".&nbsp;

<h2>Evacuation plan</h2>

In a statement, the Israeli Prime Minister's office said: "The (Israeli army) presented the War Cabinet with a plan for evacuating the population from the areas of fighting in the Gaza Strip, with the upcoming operational plan."

However, the statement in Hebrew failed to give any additional details about how or where the civilians would be moved, reports AFP.

As per a statement from his office, he has instructed the message to be conveyed to Lula through Brazil's ambassador, stating, "We will not forget nor forgive. It is a serious antisemitic attack. In my name and the name of the citizens of Israel - tell President Lula that he is persona non grata in Israel until he takes it back."

<h2>What Lula said</h2>

The Brazilian President on Sunday (Feb 18th) accused Israel of committing "genocide" against Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.

Further drawing a comparison between Israeli military actions and Adolf Hitler's campaign to exterminate the Jewish people, he said, "It's not a war of soldiers against soldiers. It's a war between a highly prepared army and women and children."

While attending an African Union summit, Lula told reporters that what was happening in the Gaza Strip "isn't a war, it's a genocide".

Last year, 99 journalists were killed, and a majority of them — 77, lost their lives in the Israel-Hamas war. This, as per the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) makes the last 12 months the deadliest for media in almost a decade.

<h2>Highest toll</h2>

As per the organisation, this is the highest toll since 2015, an approximate 44 per cent increase on the previous year's (2022) figures.

The CPJ, as cited by the news agency AFP, said that if not for the conflict in the Middle East, the killing of reporters would have dropped globally year-on-year.&nbsp;

"In December 2023, CPJ reported that more journalists were killed in the first three months of the Israel-Gaza war than have ever been killed in a single country over an entire year," it said in a statement.

CPJ said that of the 77 journalists killed during the Israel-Hamas war, a vast majority — 72 of them — were Palestinians. Of the remaining five, three were Lebanese and two were Israelis.

While CPJ figures put the number of journalists killed in the Gaza conflict at 77, as per data released on February 7&nbsp;by the New York-based press freedom organisation, the death toll has risen to 85.

CPJ previously labelled the deaths "persecution" of journalists by Israeli forces. It is reportedly investigating the deaths of a dozen journalists killed during the Gaza war, looking into whether their deaths constitute a "war crime" — if they were deliberately killed by Israeli forces.
