An Israeli strike Wednesday on a residential area of Damascus killed at least two people, Syrian official media reported, the latest fatalities as hostilities increase during the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.

The Israeli army told AFP it had no comment.

An AFP photographer said the strike hit a nine-storey building whose outside had been partially blackened, with damaged centred around the fourth floor, while nearby cars were also damaged.

Authorities had cordoned off the area, while firefighters were trying to extinguish the subsequent blaze, the photographer said.

Kafr Sousa, a high-security area of the Syrian capital, is home to senior security officials, security branches, intelligence headquarters and an Iranian cultural centre.

Since Syria's civil war broke out in 2011, Israel has launched hundreds of air strikes on its northern neighbour, mainly targeting Iran-backed forces, including Hezbollah militants as well as Syrian army positions.

The strikes have increased since Israel's war with Hamas began on October 7.

On February 10, Israeli air strikes that targeted a building in an upscale area near Damascus killed three people, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor.

A day earlier, an area near a military airport west of Damascus came under missile attack, the Observatory had said, while the defence ministry said drones had entered Syrian airspace from the direction of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Earlier this month, the Observatory had said seven civilians were among 11 people killed in Israeli air strikes on the central Syrian city of Homs.

The Israeli cabinet unanimously approved a statement rejecting all “international dictates” seeking to push Palestinian statehood, which it termed as equivalent to a “massive and&nbsp;unprecedented prize for terror” that would prevent any future peace deal.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday (Feb 18) said that his government would vote on a "declaratory decision" about Israel's resistance to the imposition of Palestinian independence by force.

At the start of the weekly cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said that this move comes after "recent talk in the international community about an attempt to unilaterally impose on Israel a Palestinian state."

He said the formal statement would reflect that, "Israel rejects outright international dictates regarding a permanent arrangement with the Palestinians. Such an arrangement can only be reached in direct negotiations between the sides, without preconditions."&nbsp;

"Israel will continue to oppose a unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state. Such a recognition, following the massacre of October 7, will give terrorism a huge reward, a reward like no other, and will prevent any future peace agreement," the Israeli prime minister said.

The ongoing war in the Gaza Strip, which&nbsp;raged&nbsp;after Hamas launched unprecedented attacks against Israel on Oct 7, is the latest in the conflicts between Israelis and Palestinians that have reverberated for over seven decades and destabilised the Middle East.

Since 2014, attempts to establish a Palestinian state alongside Israel in the West Bank and Gaza have been stalled.

Meanwhile, the US has signalled it would veto an Algerian push at the UN Security Council (UNSC) to demand an urgent ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.&nbsp;

The vote at the 15-member body is scheduled to take place on Tuesday (Feb 20) and the draft of the proposal was put forward two weeks ago. US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said the text could sabotage ongoing “sensitive negotiations” aimed at hammering out a peace deal.

For Algeria’s proposal to get adopted, at least nine members need to vote in favour, in addition to no vetoes by the permanent members—the US, UK, China, Russia and France.

“The United States does not support action on this draft resolution. Should it come up for a vote as drafted, it will not be adopted,” Thomas-Greenfield says in a statement Saturday.

Initially, sales will be limited to official bodies, and Starlink has committed not to provide access to humanitarian organisations in the Gaza Strip without Israel's defence establishment approval, as stated by Elad Malka, the deputy director of the ministry, in an interview.<o:p></o:p>

“We need determination, endurance, strength, and national cohesion with the goals. It is a battle in which the one who survives is the one who is stronger at the national level, in its values, and in its unity. This is a battle of national determination, and I tell you that we will defeat Hamas,” Gallant added.

The warning comes at a time when Yemen-based and Iran-backed Houthis have been stepping up their attack on US naval assets that are stationed in the Red Sea in the aftermath of the Israel-Gaza war.

Egypt has come out with a peace proposal plan to end the Israel-Hamas war, calling for a phased hostage release and the formation of a Palestinian government of experts to administer the Gaza Strip and occupied West Bank.

AP news agency on Monday (Dec 26) reported, citing a senior Egyptian official and a European diplomat familiar with the proposal, that the plan was worked out with the help of Qatar and presented to Israel, Hamas, the United States and European governments.

“To achieve that goal, its military capabilities must be dismantled and its political rule over Gaza must end. Hamas’s leaders have vowed to repeat the Oct. 7 massacre ‘again and again’. That is why their destruction is the only proportional response to prevent the repeat of such horrific atrocities. Anything less guarantees more war and more bloodshed,” he added.

According to Israeli media reports on Wednesday (Dec 20), Sinwar is believed to be hiding in tunnels under Gaza’s southern city of Khan Younis, after fleeing the north by hiding in a humanitarian convoy moving to the south during the early days of the terror group’s war with Israel.

It is reported that Sinwar managed to escape just before the Israeli forces arrived.

According to Channel 13, IDF has been primarily focusing its operations around Khan Younis city in order to achieve its goal of killing Sinwar.

On Sunday, they raided the homes of several Hamas leaders, Sinwar being one of them.

“Khamenei, playing with fire has a price,” it added in statements in Persian and English.

Iran’s oil minister Javad Owji also confirmed that the disruption had affected 70 per cent of the country’s fuel stations.

He also made clear that the disruption had nothing to do with rumours of fuel shortage in the country. However, he urged the people not to go to the fuel stations.

The development on Sinwar's location came a week after IDF Chief-of-staff Herzi Halevi hinted at the man's whereabouts.

"We are asked frequently about the destruction in Gaza - Hamas is the address. Sinwar is the address," Halevi said.

Israel said that their operation in southern Gaza has been focused on weeding out the top Hamas leaders, and declaring Sinwar as "a dead man walking".

He spent more than two decades behind bars in Israel, before being freed 12 years ago in a deal his brother helped negotiate.

In early October, Sinwar outsmarted Israel with the same hostage-taking tactic — resulting in Israel's deadliest day on record.

He was arrested in 1988 and was sentenced to consecutive life terms accused of planning the abduction and murder of two Israeli soldiers and the murder of four Palestinians.

Ismael al-Thawabteh, the director general of the government media office in Gaza, told Al Jazeera on Sunday (Dec 3) that over 700 Palestinians have been killed since Israel resumed bombardment after a seven-day truce ended on Friday.

Heavy bombardment was reported in and around the enclave’s second-largest city of Khan Younis as the military asked civilians to evacuate from the areas of the city and head south to Rafaj or the west.

The pandemic has killed close to 250,000 people in India.&nbsp;The drop in positive cases is a promising sign.&nbsp;However, it cannot be said India has touched the peak. The country's positivity rate remains around 21 per cent, which means more than one out of five people are testing positive.

India needs to bring down the positivity rate to less than five per cent. Only then&nbsp;it will have the second wave be under control.

India needs to test more. On Sunday, India had conducted just 1.47 million tests which is the lowest this month. Monday was an improvement with over 1.8 million tests conducted in the last 24 hours.

In the past two weeks, India has conducted more than 1.9 million tests in a day multiple times. However, the vaccination curve has peaked. The vaccinations were on a high in April.

India has been administering close to two million doses a day with over 170 million shots given so far and just 2.7 per cent of India's population has got both shots.

Maharashtra has stopped vaccination for those above 18. The state says it will only inoculate those above 45 years of age because it does not have enough doses even as the Centre has asked state governments to prioritise those waiting for their second jab.

Monday (November 27) was the last day of four-day truce brokered between Israel and Hamas. Talks were on to further extend it, after which Qatar had&nbsp;announced that the truce has been extended by two more days.

On Sunday, Hamas released 17 of the hostages in its custody. The released prisoners included a 4-year-old Israeli-American girl. Hamas has till now, released 58 prisoners. Israel in exchange, has freed 117 Palestinian prisoners.

US President Joe Biden has already supported extension of truce.

"That's our goal, to keep this pause going beyond tomorrow so that we can continue to see more hostages come out and surge more humanitarian relief into those in need in Gaza," Biden said Sunday.

But has underlined the nature of the pause as one that'll be in effect "as long as prisoners keep coming out".

Taking to social media X, IDF Arabic-language spokesman Avichai Adraee said the family is currently being held in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis.

“Children and babies under the age of one who have not seen the light of day for more than fifty days are being held captive by Hamas, [who] treats some of them like loot and in some places has transferred them to other terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip,” Adraee wrote.

It was unclear exactly when the transfer occurred or which faction was holding them.

Meanwhile, relatives of the family have urged negotiators to "do whatever they can" to get them home.

The message, however, did not go down well with the match officials as he was found guilty of&nbsp;committing a level-I offence. The news was later confirmed by Al-Mayadeen, a pan-Arab satellite channel that is politically allied with the Iranian-backed Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah.

According to The Times of Israel, the damage caused to the ship was minimal.

It reported that the ship had no ties with Israel as Symi is leased to CMA CGM by Singapore-based Eastern Pacific Shipping, which is a company ultimately controlled by Israeli billionaire Idan Ofer.

“The attack is likely to have been targeted, due to the vessel’s Israeli affiliation through Eastern Pacific Shipping,” the private intelligence firm Ambrey told the AP.

“The vessel’s AIS transmissions were off days prior to the event, indicating this alone does not prevent an attack.”

A statement issued on behalf of Eastern Pacific acknowledged the company being "aware of claims that a container ship under the company's management was targeted in a possible security incident overnight on Friday."

"The vessel in question is currently sailing as planned," the statement said. "All crew are safe and well."
