The Israeli army said on Wednesday (Oct 11) that an "error" was behind reports of a suspected "aerial infiltration" from Lebanon.

"There are no launches at this point from Lebanon. There are no alerts," army spokesman Daniel Hagari said in a televised statement as he ruled out&nbsp;any major incident near the border.

"This has been an error that we are looking into... We will check whether it's a technical malfunction or a human error," he added.&nbsp;

Earlier in the evening, reports emerged that&nbsp;rocket sirens were activated in the northern part of the nation over suspicion of aerial infiltration from Lebanon's side.

In a post on X,&nbsp;Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that a report was received regarding a "suspected infiltration from Lebanon into Israeli airspace".&nbsp;

Maps started to circulate&nbsp;on social media showing all the places under alert where residents are being told to enter shelters.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The army's Home Front Command had even asked residents of the cities of Beit Shean, Safed and Tiberias to remain in&nbsp;shelters "until further notice".&nbsp;

Unconfirmed reports claimed that the United States government also announced&nbsp;an immediate evacuation of the embassy in Beirut and told all Americans&nbsp;to leave Lebanon.&nbsp;

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was holding security consultations, Ynet reported, further adding that he was in a reinforced room deep under Defense Ministry headquarters. &nbsp;

Israel&nbsp;maintained its bombardment of the Gaza Strip on Wednesday while also striking targets in southern Lebanon, as armed wings of Palestinian militant groups continue to fire rockets.&nbsp;

"Safety is always our highest priority and following the latest assessment of the situation we're suspending our flights to and from Tel Aviv," British Airways said in a statement.

"We're contacting customers booked to travel to or from Tel Aviv to apologise for the inconvenience and offer options including a full refund and rebooking with another airline or with British Airways at a later date.

"We continue to monitor the situation in the region closely," it added.

Similarly, the broad-based S&amp;P 500 Index climbed by 0.6 per cent to 4,335.66 points, and the Nasdaq Composite Index showed a 0.4 per cent advance, closing at 13,484.24 points.

Outside the US, businesses with ties to Israel, such as chipmakers and software providers, faced pressure as a result of the conflict.&nbsp;

Interestingly, shares of prominent defence and oil companies experienced significant gains during this tumultuous period.&nbsp;

Lockheed Martin, for instance, closed nearly 9 per cent higher, reflecting investors' focus on security-related industries. Northrop Grumman Corp rose by 11.4 per cent and Exxon Mobil picked up 3.4 per cent.

Talking to AFP, CFRA Research chief investment strategist Sam Stovall said: "Historically, military shocks on their own have tended to be short-lived."

"Even though oil prices spiked by 4.3 percent on the first trading day after the attack, the US dollar weakened, and share prices rose, implying that traders think this military shock will also likely not trigger a new bear market," he added.

This unexpected surge in defence stocks appears to be linked to concerns about geopolitical risks.&nbsp;

Israel faces barrage of rockets fired from Gaza and south Lebanon

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on Tuesday (Oct 10) that a senior Hamas official had been killed in an airstrike overnight. IDF said that it killed Hamas's minister of economy and another senior member in drone strikes in the Gaza Strip.&nbsp;

According to IDF, the senior official has been identified as Jawad Abu Shamala, the Minister of Economy of the military group's political arm.&nbsp;

The military said that Shamala managed the terror group's funds, and "earmarked funds for financing and directing terror in and outside the Gaza Strip".&nbsp;

IDF identified the second person it killed as Zakariya Abu Moammar, who was the head of the terror group's internal relations. The IDF said that Moammar was a confidant to Hamas's Gaza chief, Yahya Sinwar.&nbsp;

"He was a senior Hamas decision-maker and coordinator between terror groups in the Gaza Strip," IDF said.&nbsp;

The neighbourhood is dubbed by the army as al-Furqan, after a mosque in the area. Israel claimed that it is a "nest of terror" used by Hamas to launch attacks against it.&nbsp;

Israel has ordered a "complete siege" of the Gaza Strip and the ambassador to the United Arab Emirates said on Tuesday that nothing would stop them from crushing Hamas.&nbsp;

"We'll do everything needed in order to make sure that those people will not threaten and will not hurt our citizens again," Ambassador Amir Hayek told Reuters at the embassy in Abu Dhabi.

"We need to make sure that everyone will understand that if anyone will ever think about doing such things and putting Israeli citizens at risk, he will pay the full price and will not be able to do it again."

The victims of the Hamas attacks were overwhelmingly civilians, gunned down in their homes and on the streets.

"I don't know any sovereign country in the world that could have been in this situation and continuing things as usual without smashing the terrorists," Hayek said.&nbsp;

Israel Defense Forces says killed Hamas economy minister, senior official in air strikes

Israeli authorities have ordered residents of a number of towns in northern Israel to remain in bomb shelters until further notice as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that it is investigating an infiltration into Israel's airspace in the Golan Heights, a disputed region.&nbsp;

In a statement, IDF said: "A report was received regarding a suspected aerial infiltration in the area of the Golan Heights and the Upper Galilee. IDF soldiers are directing IDF aircraft and conducting searches in the area."&nbsp;

IDF has also said that it has been instructing the population inside of the Gaza Strip to distance themselves from designated areas. In a post on X, it said: "We emphasize that there is no official call by Israel for residents of the Gaza Strip to exit into Egypt."&nbsp;

Israel's Channel 12 also reported&nbsp;that Israel has told Egypt it will bomb trucks carrying supplies into Gaza.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Israel: IDF probes infiltration reports of Golan Heights airspace, asks people to remain in bomb shelters

In Israel's Ofakim, a woman reportedly distracted the Hamas for 15 hours, before being rescued.&nbsp;The woman has been identified by Israel's Channel 12 News as Rachel Adari.

Here's what happened:

Talking to the Israeli News channel, Rachel recalled that five terrorists armed to the teeth with guns and other weapons entered the house where she and her husband were present.

"I said to my husband, if we will die, we will die together," Rachel Adari told the outlet.

The couple's son, a police officer, was on the outside, helping the YAMAM counterterrorism force plan a rescue. Aware of the fact, Rachel decided to buy some time.

She told Channel 12 that she could see that the Hamas operatives were agitated, and that's when she came up with a plan.

"I saw they were angry, and I asked them if they were hungry," she said.

"I made them coffee and gave them cookies. They started singing Lior Narkis (Israeli singer's) songs to me. I distracted them. I knew my son was helping the YAMAM and that they would come rescue me."

The next few hours were spent waiting, hoping to be rescued.

At around midnight, the couple saw the IDF approaching.

"At 2:30 in the morning, a grenade was suddenly thrown into our house, I jumped on my wife. Shots passed over us - near the head. I don't know how we survived," (translated from Hebrew) he told the news organisation.

After 15 hours of waiting, the couple was rescued. The Hamas operatives were killed by the Israeli special forces during the rescue operation.&nbsp;

Just a few days ago, Israel, which has one of the world's most powerful militaries, was caught off guard by what is proving to be the worst breach in its defences since Arab forces waged a war around 50 years ago, in 1973.

As per Reuters, the death toll from the Hamas attacks on Saturday (Oct 7) has climbed to 900 — mostly civilians gunned down in their homes.

Gaza's Health Ministry claims that the retaliatory strikes have led to the death of around 687 Palestinians.

The United Nations reports that around 180,000 Gazans have been rendered homeless due to the conflict.

"Hamas used an unprecedented intelligence tactic to mislead Israel over the last months, by giving a public impression that it was not willing to go into a fight or confrontation with Israel while preparing for this massive operation," said Reuter's source.

<h2>Caught off guard: The Israel-Hamas war</h2>

Israel too has conceded that it was caught off guard by the attack that coincided with the Jewish Sabbath and another religious holiday.

Israeli Defence Forces spokesperson Major Nir Dinar has described the attack as "our 9/11."&nbsp;

"They got us," said Dinar, adding that "they surprised us, and they came fast from many spots - both from the air and the ground and the sea."

An Israeli security source also acknowledged Israel's security services were duped by Hamas.&nbsp;

"Israel surely saw them, but they were convinced that Hamas wasn't keen on getting into a confrontation," said the source, adding, "Hamas was able to build a whole image that it was not ready for a military adventure against Israel."

In the last couple of days, after Hamas stormed into Israel towns, 700 Israelis have been killed and dozens of others have been abducted. In retaliation, Israel has killed more than 400 Palestinians in its attack on Gaza.

Israel has drafted a record 300,000 reservists in its response to a Hamas attack from Gaza and is "going on the offensive," the chief military spokesperson said on Monday.&nbsp;

Since Saturday's surprise assault, Israeli aircraft have been pounding Gaza targets while its ground forces have battled to retake control of border villages and towns overrun by Palestinian gunmen.&nbsp;

Chief military spokesperson Rear-Admiral Daniel Hagari said control of those communities had been re-established but that isolated clashes continued as some gunmen remained active.&nbsp;

Military officials had previously said that their focus was on securing Israel's side of the border before carrying out any major escalation of the counter-offensive in Gaza.

According to Hagari, 300,000 reservists have been called up by the military since Saturday.&nbsp;

According to a report by the news agency AFP, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said, "Over 123,538 people, have been internally displaced in Gaza, mostly due to fear, protection concerns and the destruction of their homes." The OCHA added that more than 73,000 people are sheltering in schools, some of which have been designated as emergency shelters. Speaking to AFP, Adnan Abu Hasna, a spokesperson for the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) said that there is electricity in these schools, and people are being provided with meals, clean water, psychological support and medical treatment.
