The United States on Friday (Dec 8) vetoed the proposed demand by the other&nbsp;United Nations Security Council countries for an immediate ceasefire in the intense fighting between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza, in a bid to shield its longtime ally.

Thirteen other members voted in favour of the draft resolution moved by the United Arab Emirates, while the United Kingdom abstained.&nbsp;

The voting came after United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in a rare move, formally warned the 15-member council of a global threat from the war, which has now been going on for over two months.

"What is the message we are sending Palestinians if we cannot unite behind a call to halt the relentless bombardment of Gaza?," Deputy UAE U.N. Ambassador Mohamed Abushahab asked the council. 
 
"Indeed, what is the message we are sending civilians across the world who may find themselves in similar situations?"

"The United Arab Emirates is deeply disappointed," said the representative of the UAE. "Regrettably... this council is unable to demand a humanitarian ceasefire."

Wood further denounced the UAE stating that the draft resolution was a rushed, imbalanced text "that was divorced from reality, that would not move the needle forward on the ground in any concrete way."

"We do not support this resolution's call for an unsustainable ceasefire that will only plant the seeds for the next war," said Wood.

UK's UN Ambassador Barbara Woodward said that her country abstained because there was no denunciation of Hamas.

"Israel needs to be able to address the threat posed by Hamas and it needs to do so in a manner that abides by international humanitarian law so that such an attack can never be carried out again," she told the council.

Israel's UN Ambassador Gilad Erdan did not address the Security Council after the vote, but in a statement said: "A ceasefire will be possible only with the return of all the hostages and the destruction of Hamas."

Washington, being the permanent member of the Security Council, can veto any resolution.

Ahead of the vote, Guterres had said that "the brutality perpetrated by Hamas can never justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people."

Speaking during a news briefing, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that "every action" had been taken in an apparent attempt to help make the Jewish community feel safe.

"We have seen an uptick in hate, just more broadly, in different communities—obviously, also in the Muslim community. And so, we will do everything that we can to make sure that these communities feel safe," she added.

"Obviously, over the past couple of weeks since this—certainly since this war started, we have seen the increase of antisemitism. You know, we understand the fear that people in the Jewish community must be feeling right now, which is why we have taken action to do everything that we can to make sure that people in that community feel protected. And so, that's what we're going to continue to do."

In a post on X, former Virginia House Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn, a Democrat, also echoed similar sentiments. In an interview with the publication, Binyamin claimed, "There were violent rape incidents, the most extreme sexual abuses we have seen, of both women and men. I am talking about dozens."

He said that a team of investigators had gathered "tens of thousands" of testimonies from survivors, witnesses and first responders.&nbsp;

Binyamin also said that they were combing through banks of videos and photos from the Oct 7 Hamas incursion, but refused to divulge details, saying, "This is an ongoing investigation."

He also claims to have witnessed the beheading of a young woman who had fought back as Hamas stripped her.

"They threw her to the ground, and one of the terrorists took a shovel and beheaded her," he told The Sunday Times, adding, "And her head rolled along the ground. I see that head, too."

Speaking during the Republican presidential debate, the Florida Governor said that there would've been more hostages if he hadn't stepped in to arrange evacuation for 700 people.

I sent planes over to Israel, and I brought back over 700 people to safety. There could've been more hostages had we not acted," said DeSantis.&nbsp;

The assailant, Wadea's landlord, 71-year-old Joseph M Czuba reportedly entered the little boy's family home yelling: "You Muslims must die!".

In the attack, the child's 32-year-old mother also suffered several stabbing wounds and had to be hospitalised.

Similarly, there have been reports of several disturbing spillovers and prejudices against Muslims and Jews. This includes reports of university students beating up their classmates, tearing down posters of Israeli children taken hostage, and more.

Are these once in a blue moon kinds of incidents?

Unfortunately, no. Modern history has already been witness to two such major episodes, where a particular race or religion saw widespread hatred: the Covid pandemic and the 9/11 attacks.

A 2021 poll by Axios/Ipsos, called the 'Hard Truth Civil Rights &amp; Social Justice poll' found that 82 per cent of Asian Americans agreed that as a group they've faced discrimination because of the coronavirus pandemic. More than 57 per cent said they often or sometimes feel unsafe in public.

Johnson, accompanied by former Australian PM Morrison, also paid a visit to Kibbutz Kfar Aza, the area which became the scene of devastation as Hamas militants launched their October 7 attack called Operation Al-Aqsa Floodgate.

The two leaders, along with Israeli soldiers and officials, also walked into some houses that were burned during the October 7 attacks.

Johnson, as reported by Reuters, said that he believed that the attacks, which killed over 1,400 Israelis, might suggest that the memory of the Holocaust is “starting to fade” but stressed that antisemitism "simply cannot be tolerated".

Later, talking to the press, Johnson said he believed that the attacks, which killed over 1,400 Israelis, might suggest that the memory of the Holocaust is "starting to fade". He also stressed that antisemitism "simply cannot be tolerated".

"There's been no single attack like this on the Jewish people since the Second World War, and that's a matter of record," said Johnson.

"I think that maybe because across the world, the memory and the lesson of that appalling crime, where six million died, the memory may be starting to fade. And it may be that what we're really seeing right now, in some of these marches and these demos, and the unthinking way people are talking about this issue, what we're starting to see perhaps, I hope this really isn't the case, we're seeing more and more evidence of antisemitism."

"In the end, that is something that simply cannot be tolerated, neither in my country nor anywhere else," he emphasised.

In the attack, as per Israeli estimates, around 1,400 people were killed, while more than 230 were taken hostage by the militants. These kidnapped individuals, which involve foreign nationals and around 30 children, remain with the Hamas, amid calls for their release. As of Sunday, more than 9,770 Palestinians have been killed in the war, said Gaza health officials.

James Elder, the United Nations Children's Fund's (UNICEF) spokesperson,&nbsp;said, "Gaza has become a graveyard for thousands of children".

According to UNICEF estimates, every day, more than 400 children are killed or injured in Gaza due to the Israeli offensive.&nbsp;

In a statement, the UN agency said that around 3,500 children have reportedly been killed, while more than 6,800 have been injured due to the "ongoing bombardment".

Hamas'&nbsp;underground tunnels have been described as "Gaza Metro" by Israeli authorities. These tunnels which run for miles underneath Gaza have long been a source of anxiety for Israeli forces.&nbsp;

Now, recent reports indicate that the military will use specialist units that include attack dogs.&nbsp;

As per The National report quoting officials in the Israeli military, specialist teams made up of Oketz or "sting" dog attack units and the Samur "Weasel" subterranean commandos will help deal with these tunnels.

These commandos, as per the report, have been trained in a specially built tunnel complex under the Negev Desert in Israel.&nbsp;

Reportedly, defence analysts have disclosed that the forces have used ground-penetrating radar and gravity detectors to map out the over 500-kilometre&nbsp;spiderweb tunnel system under Gaza.

Israel has also formed a force of combat engineers to locate the tunnels. This force is called Yahalom "Diamond" and has been trained to either destroy the tunnels or blow them up, to allow for a "hard entry" by the Samur and Oketz units.

The two units will drop into the tunnels that would likely have been blown open.

They will also use robots that have been developed by Tel Aviv company Roboteam. The company has developed IRIS, a 'throwbot', that boasts the capability to be operated remotely. The drone, which can provide critical insights and imagery from within the intricate tunnel network, is tailored to meet the demands of combat situations. It can even feature the capacity for attachments, such as weapons, ensuring enhanced capabilities for potential threats that may be seen during reconnaissance.

Alongside IRIS, Roboteam technology company has developed the MTGR (Micro Tactical Ground Robot). This as per reports, can navigate stairs and confined spaces like caves.

A week ago, a Palestinian American family in Maple Grove, Minnesota in the US, learned that they had lost 42 members of their family to the war.

<h2>Coming to terms&nbsp;</h2>

Tariq Hamouda and his wife&nbsp;still cannot fully comprehend that they've lost three generations of their family.&nbsp;Talking to CNN, Hamouda said that his wife, whose maiden name is Saqallah, lost four brothers, a sister, and their many children in what they claim were Israeli airstrikes. The explosions, as per the family, destroyed the Saqallah family compound in the Sheikh Ejleen neighbourhood of Gaza City on October 19.&nbsp;

"Up until last night, she is still denying (the loss)," said Hamouda.

Another member of the family, Eyad Abu Shaban, who lives in South Florida, says, "It's like your whole world stops" after such a loss.

He told CNN that of the 42 family members they lost, the youngest was aged just three months, and the oldest was around 77 years. Among the deceased were medical professionals, including eye and ENT doctors who operated Gaza's prominent family-owned eye clinics.

<h2>No warning given</h2>

As per Tariq Hamouda, before the strikes, the family received calls warning of military activity in the area, but they were not asked to evacuate.

"They have bombed houses with warnings and without warnings," he said, deploring the fear, and confusion faced by Palestinians.

Hamouda revealed that his mother-in-law, who was standing on the balcony when the first strike happened, managed to escape.&nbsp;

"My mother-in-law said her sons tried to evacuate, but they had no time."

The Palestinian-American man said that a second strike obliterated the family house, killing dozens inside.&nbsp;

Hamouda and his family insist that the affected family members had no involvement in any militant activities and that they "had nothing to do with anything at all."

Abu Shaban underlined that their family consisted of ordinary civilians.

"We have no Hamas members [in our family]. They're just ordinary people: doctors and grandmothers and grandfathers and uncles and aunts and children," he lamented, adding, "I mean, if you want to exterminate Hamas then you should go to the source."

Appealing for the violence to cease, the aggrieved family highlighted the human toll of the conflict and said, "We've never seen in this day and age where the whole world is watching innocent people just being torn apart. Families, whole families, just wiped off the map."

"I want everybody to know that the people of Gaza are just like them. They hurt, they bleed, they have families, they have feelings," added Abu Shaban.

Talking to news agency AFP, Hospital director Bashar Murad revealed that, on Sunday, twice, they received calls, and threats from Israeli forces asking them to evacuate the facility.

"We received strongly worded threats from the occupation (Israeli) forces to immediately evacuate Al-Quds hospital in the Gaza Strip as it will be bombed," he said.

As the conflict between Israel and Hamas intensifies, Israeli forces, as per reports, are set to use a 'novel' arsenal of tactics. This includes the use of innovative bomb known as "sponge bombs" which can seal off the intricate network of tunnels beneath Gaza without any explosions.&nbsp;

Even as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have remained tight-lipped about the use of these "sponge bombs," it is reported that these weapons can seal off tunnel entrances and help prevent surprise attacks from Hamas militants.

The drone, which can provide critical insights and imagery from within the intricate tunnel network, is tailored to meet the demands of combat situations. It can even feature the capacity for attachments such as weapons, ensuring enhanced capabilities for potential threats that may be seen during reconnaissance.

Alongside IRIS, Roboteam technology company has developed the MTGR (Micro Tactical Ground Robot). This as per reports can navigate stairs and confined spaces like caves.

"We are trying to keep the essential services," Dr Subhi&nbsp;Sukeyk, the director of the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital, told Al Jazeera, adding that services like radiology had already ground to a halt.

The second incident involves students from Columbia University. A 19-year-old student has been hit with hate crime, assault and harassment charges for attacking a Jewish classmate. The attacker has been identified by Daily Mail as Maxwell Friedman.

Friedman, who uses female pronouns as per police, attacked a 24-year-old male classmate, fracturing his finger. The victim who has not been identified, was putting up posters of young children taken hostage by Hamas militants when the hate crime happened.

These incidents are not just limited to college and university campuses. Recently, in Illinois, US, a 71-year-old landlord made the headlines for fatally stabbing the 6-year-old child of his Palestine-American tenants.

NYU students seen tearing down posters of young Israeli children kidnapped by Hamas. Watch!

Palestine, on Wednesday, called out Israel on its denial of involvement in the tragic Gaza hospital blast. Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian Ambassador to the UN, called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a "liar" and countered his claims that Hamas was behind the attack.

The Palestinian envoy claimed that Israeli forces were behind the strike and said that they had proof, a deleted X (formerly Twitter) post made by Israel.

<h2>What proof does Palestine have?</h2>

Hitting out at the Israeli PM, Mansour said, "He is a liar."&nbsp;

The diplomat claimed that they have a copy of a now-deleted post made by Israel in which the nation allegedly admitted that they hit a Hamas base in the area.

He said that Netanyahu's "digital spokesperson tweeted that Israel did the hit thinking that there was a base for Hamas around this hospital, and then he deleted that tweet. We have a copy of that tweet."

"Now they changed the story to try to blame the Palestinians," he alleged, adding, "The Israeli spokesperson of the Army made a statement in which he said evacuate the hospitals... Their intention is to evacuate or hospitals will be hit and they are responsible for that crime and they cannot fabricate stories to deal with it."

As per news agency ANI, Mansour in his statement also demanded for immediate ceasefire.

"We as an Arab Group demand immediately a ceasefire because the continuation of the war, it means killing more Palestinians every moment."

Earlier, in a statement, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said that intelligence from several sources revealed that "Islamic Jihad terrorists" were responsible for the strike, which was an unsuccessful rocket launch.

Taking to social media platform X, he said: "An analysis of IDF operational systems indicates that a barrage of rockets was fired by terrorists in Gaza, passing in close proximity to the Al Ahli hospital in Gaza at the time it was hit."&nbsp;

The Israel Defense Forces, as per AFP, also attributed the blast to a misfired rocket by Hamas.

At the funeral gathering, the boy, Wadea al-Fayoume's uncle, revealed the heartbreaking last words of the little boy: "Mom, I'm fine."

<h2>Friend turned foe</h2>

"When he (the child) was stabbed, his last words to his mom were, 'Mom, I'm fine.' You know what, he is fine. He's in a better place," said Mahmoud Yousef, Wadea al-Fayoume's uncle.

Speaking on behalf of the aggrieved family, Yousef Hannon, another uncle of the victim, claimed that the suspect 71-year-old Joseph Czuba was very friendly with the little boy and his family.

"There were no signs of anything wrong," he said, adding that "he was friendly with the whole family, but especially to the kid, who he treated like a grandson."

Talking to the BBC, he stated that Czuba "brought him (Wadea al-Fayoume) gifts, he brought him some toys."

<h2>Overflowing grief</h2>

In Illinois, United States, hundreds of people came together to pay their last respects to six-year-old Wadea al-Fayoume, who on Sunday was attacked in his home.

The Monday funeral saw the Mosque Foundation in the Chicago suburb of Bridgeview overflow with people, with some paying their respects on the pavement outside.

Mourners, as per BBC, came from all over the area to express their anger and grief. Among them, some voiced their concerns about other Muslim children.

Talking to BBC, a mother of three said: "I'm shocked, but I'm not surprised."

She said that schools in the locality have taken extra precautions because of the ongoing war in Israel and Gaza.

<h2>The attack and the motive</h2>

As per the police, the little boy was attacked because he was Muslim.&nbsp;

In a court filing, Assistant State's Attorney Michael Fitzgerald alleged that Czuba, who was the landlord to the Muslim family, was angry at the little boy's mother "for what was going on in Jerusalem."

"She responded to him, 'Let's pray for peace,'" wrote the prosecutors.&nbsp;

"Czuba then attacked her with a knife," they added.

They claim that the landlord grew paranoid about the presence of the Palestinian-American family in his house.&nbsp;

The child was stabbed 26 times with a military-style knife, reports Al Jazeera. The mother too suffered a dozen stab wounds, but she is expected to survive the senseless crime.
