On Monday, tens of thousands of people took to the streets outside the Knesset (Israeli parliament) in Jerusalem while major labour organisations called for a strike effectively bringing the whole country to a grinding halt. Hours later, Netanyahu delayed the process for the next session of parliament in order to “pass the reform through dialogue.” The next session will be after the Passover recess in April.&nbsp;

In a joint statement on Tuesday the leader of the opposition Yair Lapid, who has since been sceptical of the move and Benny Gantz, a former defence minister, said that these talks would stop immediately “if the law is put on put on the Knesset’s agenda,” reported AFP. The opposition had previously refused to negotiate until the process to pass the controversial overhaul was stopped.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Israeli PM, in a statement on Tuesday has said that the goal is to “reach an agreement.” The two sides wrapped up talks after 90 minutes, said Herzog’s office, reported Times of Israel. The meeting was held “in a good atmosphere,” and will continue tomorrow. Today’s meeting included delegations from Netanyahu’s Likud party and opposition parties Yesh Atid and National Unity.&nbsp;

The legal reforms would threaten the checks and balances of the country as it has no written constitution while the proposed legislation seeks to weaken the Supreme court. It would also give absolute power to the ruling party coalition, which in this case would be Netanyahu’s Likud party, which also holds a majority in the Knesset.&nbsp;

Notably, after the first round of talks with the Israeli president, the Yesh Atid delegation said that they pushed for a “widely agreed upon constitution based on the values of the Declaration of Independence,” in a statement, as per Times of Israel.&nbsp;

Despite Netanyahu hitting a pause on the overhaul, activists have said they will continue their rallies. “This is another attempt of Netanyahu trying to gaslight the Israeli public in order to weaken the protest and then enact a dictatorship,” said the Umbrella Movement of demonstrators, in a statement. It added, “We will not stop the protest until the judicial coup is completely stopped.”

Israel is in the midst of what can only be described as a major political crisis after&nbsp;Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his right-wing coalition government proposed an overhaul of the country's judiciary, earlier this year. Since then, Israel has&nbsp;witnessed mass protests with tens of thousands of people taking to the streets in major cities across the country&nbsp;opposing the plan week after week.&nbsp;

Demonstrations continued on Monday (March 27), a day after Netanyahu fired Defence Minister Yoav Gallant which overnight plunged the ruling coalition into chaos as the PM&nbsp;faced mounting pressure to halt, freeze, or shelve his judicial overhaul plan.&nbsp;

The Israeli parliament, Knesset’s Constitution, Law, and Justice Committee was supposed to open early Monday for final voting of the judicial overhaul bill. 
 
However, in a statement, late Monday, Netanyahu&nbsp;delayed the process for discussions on the judicial overhaul&nbsp;to next month and said that the&nbsp;legislation would be pushed to the next session of the Israeli parliament in order to "pass the reform through dialogue."

From protest to pause: What is this plan all about?

Earlier this year, in January, the country’s Justice Minister Yariv Levin unveiled a plan which would overhaul Israel’s judicial system. Since then opponents and critics have repeatedly said that it would threaten the democracy and freedom of Israel. Notably, Israel has no written constitution and is governed by the country's Basic Laws and has “evolved a system of basic laws and rights, which enjoy (the) semi-constitutional status,” says the Knesset website. &nbsp;

The long-promised overhaul of the judicial system is supposedly directed toward weakening the Israeli Supreme court. Furthermore, critics have said that it will affect the checks and balances as well as undermine democratic institutions by giving absolute power to the ruling party coalition, which in this case would be Netanyahu’s Likud party, which also holds a majority in the Knesset.&nbsp;

The legal reforms would also limit the power and authority of the High Court of Justice to block legislation or government decisions which would otherwise be deemed discriminatory or undemocratic. However, it&nbsp;is the Override Clause that garnered controversy as it&nbsp;would simply allow a majority of the Members of Knesset (MK) to overrule decisions by the High Court.&nbsp;

Additionally, the government will also gain control over the selection process of judges and reportedly eliminate ministry legal advisers who are appointed by and report to the attorney general into political appointments controlled entirely by the government.

This makes the Supreme Court the only institution to limit the government’s power and by challenging legislation passed by a parliamentary majority, the proposed reform would remove this roadblock for the Netanyahu government. Notably, the court cannot arbitrarily dismiss legislation passed by the parliament unless they hinder one of the Basic Laws of Israel.&nbsp;

Ouster of Israeli defence minister

Netanyahu fired Gallant a day after his speech called on the government to stop the proposed judicial overhaul and hold talks with its opponents. In a brief statement, the PM's office said that Gallant will be transferred from his post. However, there was no clarity on the new position he will be given.&nbsp;

The threats around us are immense, near and far.” He also spoke about how he was “worried” about the conversations surrounding the proposed judicial reforms and that he had "never encountered the intensity of anger and pain".&nbsp;

Following his ouster, protest leaders announced a spontaneous rally outside the military’s headquarters in Tel Aviv in response to Netanyahu's decision.&nbsp;According to local media reports, over 100,000 people gathered outside the Knesset, on Monday.

Last week, Netanyahu&nbsp;visited the United Kingdom&nbsp;and met his British counterpart&nbsp;PM Rishi Sunak at No. 10 Downing Street, as hundreds gathered outside. During the meeting, Sunak stressed the importance of “upholding democratic values”, said the UK PM’s spokesperson.&nbsp;

“The prime minister stressed the importance of upholding the democratic values that underpin our relationship, including in the proposed judicial reforms in Israel,” Sunak had said. Additionally, US National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson, late Sunday, said that Washington is “deeply concerned” about developments out of Israel and highlighted the “urgent need for compromise”.&nbsp;

The motion failed by a vote of 59-53. Hours later, justice minister Levin said that he will “respect” PM Netanyahu's decision on how to proceed with the proposed overhaul plan, reported Times of Israel.

However, he also warned how stopping it now may lead to the immediate "collapse of Likud", Netanyahu's right-wing ruling coalition. “We must all make an effort to stabilise the government and the coalition,”&nbsp;said Levin. Similarly, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said that the overhaul plan should not stop under any circumstances.&nbsp;

The strike by officials of all Israeli missions in India and across the world will remain until it is called off.&nbsp;

The walkouts were announced in a televised address by Histadrut chairman Arnon Bar-David who said, “I am calling a general strike. We have a mission to stop this legislative process and we will do it.” This has since prompted workers from a range of sectors in Israel to launch a nationwide strike.&nbsp;

Israel’s largest trade union called for its 800,000 members to stop work in healthcare, transit, banking and other fields. Subsequently, the Israel Medical Association also announced a “full strike” of the country’s healthcare system, directly affecting all public hospitals.

Subsequently, the Israeli PM was given a week to respond to the petition filed by the group, ruled the Israeli&nbsp;high court on Sunday.&nbsp;

The Israeli PM has been accused of violating a conflict of interest agreement which was supposed to prevent him from interfering in the country’s judiciary as he is on trial for corruption. The group The Movement for Quality Government in Israel has reportedly been fiercely opposing the proposed overhaul and has now asked the country’s Supreme Court to act and force Netanyahu to obey the law.&nbsp;

The Jerusalem-based which was established almost three decades ago also filed a petition against the Israeli PM which contended that he is in contempt of court for breaking his conflict of interest agreement.&nbsp;

The Movement for Quality Government in Israel has said that Netanyahu should be fined, imprisoned or sanctioned for this violation, as per media reports.&nbsp;“A prime minister who doesn’t obey the court and the provisions of the law is privileged and an anarchist,” said the head of the MQG, Eliad Shraga, as per media reports. He added, “The prime minister will be forced to bow his head before the law and comply with the provisions of the law.”&nbsp;

The High Court of Justice’s chief, Esther Hayut, following the petition has&nbsp;also asked Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara and Knesset (Israeli parliament) Speaker Amir Ohana to respond to these allegations by April 2.

A letter from the attorney general was sent to Netanyahu&nbsp;warning that his&nbsp;speech on Thursday violated the conflict of interest agreement, said the good governance group. Israeli defence minister calls for halt on government’s proposed judicial overhaul

The United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak met with his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu at No. 10 Downing Street, on Friday (March 24). This comes as Netanyahu has been facing weeks of protests with tens of thousands of people taking to the streets across Israel over his proposed judicial overhaul. In fact, he could not escape demonstrators even after flying across the sea, as hundreds gathered outside 10 Downing Street prior to his meeting with Sunak.&nbsp;

During the meeting, Sunak stressed the importance of “upholding democratic values”, said the UK PM’s spokesperson after the talks. This comes as Israel is witnessing widespread protests over the proposed judicial overhaul by Netanyahu’s government which would supposedly be directed toward weakening the Israeli Supreme Court and giving more power to the ruling party, which typically holds a majority in the Knesset (Israeli parliament).&nbsp;

Prior to Netanyahu’s meeting with Sunak, he was greeted by hundreds of protesters outside No 10 Downing Street who held Israeli flags and shouted various chants including “Boosha!” which means “for shame” in Hebrew and “Netanyahu go to jail, you can't speak for Israel!”, reported Reuters.

The Codex Sassoon, which is estimated to be 1,100 years old, is one of the only two codices, or manuscripts, containing all 24 books of the Hebrew Bible. According to a report by the news agency AFP on Wednesday, Sharon Mintz, a specialist in Jewish texts at Sotheby's, the auction house selling the codex in May, said that carbon dating and other forms of the analysis showed the Codex Sassoon was written around the year 900 either in Israel or Syria. As per Sotheby, the codex is significantly more complete than the Aleppo Codex, dated to the same era. Its pre-sales estimates put the manuscript's value at between $30 million and $50 million. Mintz said a deed showed that the book was sold in 1000 AD, adding the codex was then held in a synagogue in what is now northeastern Syria until around 1400. "The manuscript then disappears for about 500 years, and re-emerges in 1929 when it was offered for sale to David Solomon Sassoon, one of the greatest collectors of Hebrew manuscripts," she said. "What you see here is an accurate, stabilised standard text of the Hebrew Bible, written over 1,000 years ago, as accurate as it is today," the Sotheby specialist told the news agency. The Hebrew Bible will be displayed at the ANU Museum of the Jewish People. Speaking to the news agency, the museum's curator Orit Shaham Gover said the ANU expected to draw the museum's full capacity of 10,000 visitors for the week. The manuscript bridges the Dead Sea Scrolls -- which date back as early as the third century BC -- and today's standard texts of the Hebrew Bible. Gover said that the Codex Sassoon bears a cultural significance beyond its linguistic and historic value. "The Bible plays a central role for any person with even a fleeting connection to Western culture, and this is the first Bible that survived history," Gover added. "The Bible wandered in all kinds of places throughout history, and was displayed only once to the public in 1982 at the British Library, and since then was always in private hands," the curator further said. An Israeli man was injured in a suspected terror attack in the West Bank town of Huwara on Sunday (March 19), as per local media reports. The Israeli ambulance service Magen David Adom said a man in his 30s was seriously wounded in the shooting attack. This comes as the Israeli and Palestinian officials met in Egypt for talks, on Sunday, to prevent the surging violence from further escalating during the Muslim holy month of Ramzan&nbsp;which begins next week.&nbsp;

Suspected terror attack in Huwara

According to Magen David Adom, the two people found at the scene&nbsp;were&nbsp;a man and a woman in their 30s. The woman, later identified as his wife, was taken to a hospital for treatment of traumatic shock, while the man was in critical condition.

“We met up with the vehicle at the Einebus junction along with IDF medical personnel. We provided medical treatment to a man in his 30s who was seriously injured by a gunshot to his upper body and to a woman who fainted from anxiety,” said senior Magen David Adom medic, Moshe Meir Shimon, who was also present at the scene of the incident, reported the Jerusalem Post.&nbsp;

“We quickly transferred them to ambulances and evacuated them to the hospital, as the man was in serious condition,” Shimon added. The identity of the victims has not been revealed. Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that it received a report of a “shooting incident” in Huwara and that it has launched a manhunt for the suspected terrorist, as per local media reports.&nbsp;

According to initial reports on the incident, at least 20 bullets were fired at the car. The Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikvah, which is treating the victim said that he was sedated and on a ventilator with gunshot wounds to his head and shoulder but is since in a stable condition, reported the Times of Israel.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took to Twitter and said he was praying for the “wounded hero” who succeeded in shooting the terrorist attacker supposedly confirming some media reports which said that the man who was shot managed to shoot back at the terrorist and injured him. Later the&nbsp;Israeli army confirmed&nbsp;that&nbsp;either soldiers or the victim shot the suspected Palestinian gunman who was the arrested by the&nbsp;Israeli forces.&nbsp;

In a statement,&nbsp;Egypt’s foreign ministry said that the meeting “aims to support dialogue between the Palestinian and Israeli sides to work to stop unilateral actions and escalation, and break the existing cycle of violence and achieve calm”, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

It added, that a reduction in violence could create a climate for the “resumption of the peace process”. The move has also been backed by the United States and Jordan. The meeting comes weeks after talks in the Jordanian coastal city of Aqaba brokered by the US has&nbsp;seemingly failed&nbsp;to stop the violence despite the two sides vowing to de-escalate.&nbsp;

Recently, the Israeli-occupied West Bank has witnessed a surge in violence with increased military raids by the Israeli army and a settler rampage in the area last month amid a rise in attacks by Palestinians. There have been some clashes between Israeli police and Palestinians particularly near the al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem around&nbsp;Ramzan which also coincides with the Jewish holiday, Passover and Christian Easter.&nbsp;

Former U.S. ambassador to Israel Daniel Shapiro, who is a distinguished fellow at the Atlantic Council and now works towards strengthening Israel-Arab world ties, said that the potential deal is “a very tough Gordian knot to cut.”

After the shooting, groups of settlers took to the streets of the town in the West Bank for hours setting fire to homes, storefronts, and cars, as per local media reports. The violence also led to the death of a 37-year-old Palestinian who was shot and killed while two others also sustained injuries after they were shot at by Israeli fire, said the Palestinian health officials, on late Sunday.&nbsp;

According to Palestinian media, more than 100 people were injured after the violence near Nablus and at least 30 houses and vehicles were burned. While the health officials also said some 95 Palestinians were being treated for tear gas inhalation.&nbsp;

Notably, this was one of the worst incidents of violence witnessed in the region in decades.&nbsp;

Since the riots, there has been a range of responses from the Netanyahu government as well as the security forces. The Israeli PM has urged the settlers “not to take the law into their own hands” and appealed for calm. He added, “I ask that the (military) and the security forces be allowed to carry out their work.” Similarly, President Isaac Herzog, condemning the attack, also said that violence against innocent people “is not our way”.&nbsp;

On the other hand, a lawmaker from Netanyahu’s ruling coalition and chairman of the Knesset’s (Israeli parliament) National Security Committee, Zvika Fogel in an interview with Galey Israel Radio said, “Yesterday, a terrorist came from Huwara. A closed, burnt Huwara — that’s what I want to see”. He added, "That’s the only way to achieve deterrence. After a murder like yesterday’s, we need burning villages when the (Israel Defense Forces) IDF doesn’t act”, as per Times of Israel.&nbsp;

The IDF on late Sunday said, “violent riots that erupted at a number of locations” in the West Bank were “being dealt with”, while the Border Police reportedly used tear gas to disperse the settlers.&nbsp;

At the scene of the shooting and subsequent riots, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant said Israel “cannot allow a situation in which citizens take the law into their hands…I ask everyone to heed the law and especially to trust in the army and security forces”. The Israeli police spokesman Dean Elsdunne said eight Israelis were detained in connection with Sunday’s violence out of which six have been released.

What has Palestine said about this violence?

The Palestinian Presidency, in a statement, condemned the attack on Huwara and called it a “terrorist act carried out by Israeli settlers” and accused the Israeli occupation forces of protecting the rioters.&nbsp;

It added, “This terrorism and whoever stands behind it aims to destroy and thwart the international efforts exerted to try to get out of the current crisis”. Additionally, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said he held the Israeli government fully responsible for the attacks.

A joint statement from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir confirmed that two Israeli civilians were killed in a “Palestinian terror attack”. The Shomron Regional Council, which administers Israeli settlements in the northern West Bank, said those killed in the Sunday attack were Jewish, reported AFP.&nbsp;Netanyahu also took to Twitter and wrote, "On behalf of all the citizens of Israel, I would like to send my condolences from the bottom of my heart to the Yaniv family of Mahar Bracha for the murder of Hillel Menachem Weigal-Yaakov. May them rest in peace."&nbsp;

He added, "We are working against terrorism by all means - in operational operations, in thwarting terrorist attacks, in passing a law to deport families of terrorists and today in a law on the death penalty for terrorists. The footage of the attack showed the victims’ car riddled with bullets while the military personnel found at least 12 nine-millimetre shell casings which indicate that the gunman was using a handgun or makeshift submachine gun, as per local media reports. The IDF has also closed parts of the surrounding area where the attack took place as the manhunt for the gunmen is underway.&nbsp;

NASA is gearing up to launch Israel's very first telescope mission. The Ultraviolet Transient Astronomy Satellite or the ULTRASAT will be launched into a geostationary orbit in early 2026.

“We are proud to join this partnership, an international effort that will help us better understand the mysteries of the hot, transient universe,” said Mark Clampin, director of the Astrophysics Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “ULTRASAT will give the global science community another important capability for making new observations in the nascent field of time domain and multimessenger astrophysics programs.”

ULTRASAT is an ultraviolet observatory with a large field of view. It is aimed to observe short-duration space events like supernova and merger of neutron stars. ULTRASAT's large field of view will allow it to quickly discover and capture ultraviolet light from such sources.

"Groundbreaking science calls for cutting-edge technology,” said Uri Oron, director of the Israel Space Agency in the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology. “Our requirements from ULTRASAT, such as a wide field of view, advanced ultraviolet sensitivity, and real-time data control and transfer are at the forefront of technological developments. Israel’s space industry can deliver these capabilities. The Israel Space Agency is proud of the cooperation with NASA as a direct example of the strong partnership between the agencies, and of the Israeli space industry's technological effort involved in the development of the telescope."

Oron was quoted by NASA.

As per agreement between NASA and Israel Space Agency, the former will provide launch service, Flight Payload Adapter and other launch-related services for ULTRASAT.

NASA to launch Israel's first space telescope

Tens of thousands of protesters gathered outside the Israeli parliament or the Knesset, on Monday (February 20) for a second straight week as lawmakers prepared to hold the first vote over the controversial plan proposed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. Over the weekend, mass demonstrations across the country against the proposed judicial overhaul entered their sixth week. In a statement, the Israeli PM accused the leaders of these protests of ‘trampling democracy’ and vowed that his government will move forward to vote on the proposed reforms.&nbsp; 
 
On Monday, the first bill which seeks to amend the Basic Law would cement government control over judicial appointments and revoke the court’s ability to review Basic Laws, reported the Times of Israel. Since Israel does not have a written constitution and is governed by these Basic Laws, the separation of powers between the legislative and executive branches of government remains weak.&nbsp;The ruling government typically which holds a majority in the parliament, in this case, Netanyahu's party has the most power.

What we know so far 
 
If passed, the controversial proposed judicial reforms would give the Israeli government greater control over the country’s judiciary, including the appointment of judges as well as&nbsp;weaken the Supreme Court. These proposed changes have also led to weeks of protest across the country. Several polls over the past weeks have shown that Israeli citizens including Netanyahu supporters either want the decision on the reforms to slow down or be shelved completely.

Critics of the judicial reforms have warned that the plans risk undermining the democratic checks and balances as it weakens the judiciary while granting additional powers to the executive. They also reportedly fear that the overhaul will allow Netanyahu to dodge the corruption charges against him, who has since denied any wrongdoing and called himself a victim of a biased judicial system.&nbsp; 
 
Last week in a rare warning, Israeli President Isaac Herzog said that the country was on the brink of “constitutional and social collapse” and urged all sides to come together. On the other hand, on Sunday, the Israeli PM dismissed suggestions that the country’s democracy was under threat and said, “Israel was and will remain a strong and vibrant democracy.”&nbsp;

According to media reports, the Israeli PM’s statement was also made after a member of his party was prevented from taking her special-needs daughter to school. This comes as protesters took to the streets ahead of the first vote on the judicial overhaul and&nbsp;blocked&nbsp;major streets and even prevented lawmakers from leaving their homes.&nbsp;

“You talk above our heads in high terms of values, the rights of minorities and individuals, while they are trampling to dust the rights of a girl with special needs and the rights of an elected representative,” said Netanyahu, referring to the incident, as per the Jerusalem Post.&nbsp;

On Sunday, Israel's security cabinet announced it would legalize nine settlements in the occupied West Bank, following a series of recent attacks on Israelis in East Jerusalem.&nbsp;

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres was "deeply concerned" by the settlement authorization announcement and warned that Israel's steps could "undermine prospects for a viable two-state solution," the secretary-general's spokesman Stephane Dujarric said this week.&nbsp;

The Iranian defence ministry has claimed that they foiled an “unsuccessful attack” which took place late Saturday and involved three drones and there were no casualties. The ministry said, one of the drones was destroyed while the other two were caught using “defence traps and blew up”. It added, “It caused only minor damage to the roof of a workshop building”, as per a report by Iranian state TV.&nbsp;

The ministry also said that the attack was conducted using “micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs)”. However, the state-run IRNA news agency later described the drones as “quadcopters equipped with bomblets,” which gets its name from the four rotors and are typically operated from short ranges by remote control.&nbsp;

Additionally, a report by Reuters citing a military official in the region said given the location of the strike as well as the size of the drone it is likely that it was staged from within Iranian borders. Subsequently, in a press conference, the country’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian with his Qatari counterpart, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, who is visiting Tehran called the attack “cowardly” and aimed at creating “insecurity” in the country.&nbsp;

While the Iranian defence ministry has not commented on who might have carried out the attack, a report by the state-run media quoting comments by a lawmaker, Hossein Mirzaie, said there was a “strong speculation” Israel was behind it. However, reports suggest that it comprises a large air base built for its fleet of US-made F-14 fighter jets and is also home to the country’s nuclear fuel research and production centre. During the aforementioned press conference when asked if the incident would affect the country’s nuclear programme, the foreign minister said, “Such moves can’t impact our nuclear scientists’ will and intentions to achieve peaceful nuclear energy,” as per Al Jazeera.&nbsp;

In a separate incident, on early Sunday, the IRNA reported that a fire broke out at a motor oil factory near the industrial zone in the northwestern city of Tabriz which the officials later said was caused by an oil leak and no further details were given.&nbsp;

Pentagon spokesperson Brigadier General Patrick Ryder said no US military forces played a role in the strikes in Iran and declined to comment further, reported Reuters. However, a US official speaking on the condition of anonymity to the news agency said it appears that Israel is involved. Additionally, first reported by the Wall Street Journal citing multiple anonymous sources from officials in Washington also reported that Tel Aviv might have been involved in Saturday’s attack.&nbsp;

Why does this matter?

If the reports are confirmed this will be the first attack carried out under Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu since he returned to office in December between the two long-time foes. Furthermore, Tehran has previously accused Israel of planning attacks using agents inside Iranian territory. Last year Iran claims that they arrested a sabotage team of Kurdish militants which had allegedly been working with Israel to blow up a “sensitive” defence industry centre in Isfahan.

US officials suspect Israel’s involvement in drone attack on Iranian 'workshop': What we know so far

In the wake of what may be&nbsp;one of the deadliest attacks in East Jerusalem&nbsp;carried out by a Palestinian in years, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on Saturday (January 28), promised “a strong, swift and precise response” ahead of a meeting with his government’s security cabinet. One of the attacks involved a shooting outside of a synagogue in East Jerusalem, on Friday, which killed at least seven people and injured three others. In a separate incident on Saturday, at least two people were injured following another shooting in the city, this time by a teen Palestinian.&nbsp;

“We are not seeking an escalation, but we are prepared for any scenario,” said Netanyahu ahead of the meeting on Saturday. Subsequently, Israel’s security cabinet announced measures which include revoking certain rights of “terrorist families” and decided to make it easier for civilians to obtain permits allowing them to carry firearms.&nbsp;

What do we know about the attacks in East Jerusalem?

The first attack took place late Friday (January 27) in East Jerusalem and has been described by the Israeli police as “a terrorist incident,” which led to the killing of seven people and wounding of three others before the perpetrator was shot dead by the police. Israeli police commissioner Yaakov Shabtai said the shooting was “one of the worst attacks we have encountered in recent years”, reported AFP.&nbsp;

It took place near a synagogue in the settlement neighbourhood of Neve Yaacov, in East Jerusalem where worshippers gathered for the Sabbath on International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The attacker was later identified as Khaire Alkam, a 21-year-old Palestinian resident of East Jerusalem who arrived at 8:15 pm (local time) outside the synagogue, said the police.&nbsp;

“The terrorist shot at everyone he encountered. He got out of the car and began a murderous rampage with a handgun,”&nbsp;said Shabtai, as per Times of Israel. According to the Israeli police, the gunman fled in a car after opening fire and was chased. Subsequently, after an exchange of fire, the attacker was “neutralised”, said the police.&nbsp;

According to a report by Reuters, the gunman was a relative of a 17-year-old Palestinian who was shot dead on Wednesday during clashes with Israeli forces in West Bank, said the gunman’s family. “He is neither the first nor the last young man to get martyred and what he did is a source of pride,”&nbsp;said the 21-year-old’s father Moussa Alkam who claims that he did not have prior knowledge about his son seeking revenge, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

The next day (January 28), another attack occurred where a 13-year-old Palestinian boy shot and wounded a 47-year-old Israeli man and his son, 23, in Silwan, East Jerusalem, reported AFP. Israel's Magen David Adom emergency response service in a video posted on Twitter said they were informed about the attack around 10:42 am (local time) and upon arrival they found two injured people lying down with “gunshot wounds to their upper body”.&nbsp;

As per local media reports citing the Israeli police, the shooter, a 13-year-old Palestinian boy was “neutralised and injured”. Additionally, an Israeli police spokesman Dean Elsdunne told The Associated Press that the attacker “waited to ambush civilians on the holy Sabbath day,” adding that the teenager opened fire on a group of five civilians.&nbsp;

The wounded teenager was later taken to the hospital, said the officials, he was also reportedly identified as an East Jerusalem resident and was suspected of having a terrorist motive. So far, no group has claimed responsibility for either of these attacks.&nbsp;

The East Jerusalem attacks came days after Israeli forces conducted a raid in West Bank on Thursday (January 26) where, according to Palestinian officials, seven gunmen and two civilians were killed in what may be the deadliest day on the territory in two decades. Furthermore, at least 20 others had been injured following a live ammunition raid on the Jenin refugee camp where Israeli troops surrounded buildings and clashed with Palestinian militants, as per reports. &nbsp;

There was also an exchange of fire between Tel Aviv and the Gaza Strip on Friday which Israel later said that it “targeted an underground rocket manufacturing site” belonging to Hamas and a north Gaza military base used by the group. &nbsp;

A report by AFP citing security sources in Hamas Islamist-controlled Gaza said there had been 15 strikes targeting militant sites and no injuries were reported. Meanwhile, the Israeli army said two rockets were fired from Gaza towards Israel around midnight, which triggered sirens in Israeli communities near the border. These attacks continued for several hours while no group claimed responsibility for firing the rockets.

How has Israel responded to the attacks?

After the synagogue attack on Friday, the Israeli police have made dozens of arrests while the military has said they will send more forces to West Bank. Furthermore, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that after a “situational assessment,” it has decided to “reinforce the Judea and Samaria (West Bank) division with an additional battalion”.&nbsp;

In light of the recent attacks, the Israeli security cabinet convened on Saturday (January 28) and subsequently announced measures which include revoking certain rights of “terrorist families”, as per AFP. Additionally, the cabinet also moved to revoke the rights to social security of “the families of terrorists that support terrorism”.&nbsp;

Furthermore, they have decided to increase gun permits for licensed civilians to defend against street attacks, a move which National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir prior to the meeting had said he would push for. “When civilians have guns, they can defend themselves”, said Ben-Gvir to the press outside a Jerusalem hospital on Saturday, reported AFP.&nbsp;

International condemnation&nbsp;

The attack drew international condemnation from several countries including the United States, United Arab Emirates, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine, and so on. Additionally, the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the attack was “particularly abhorrent” as it occurred at a place of worship and on International Holocaust Remembrance Day.&nbsp;

Subsequently, Israel’s security cabinet announced measures which include revoking certain rights of “terrorist families” and decided to make it easier for civilians to obtain permits allowing them to carry firearms. The first attack took place late Friday (January 27) in East Jerusalem and has been described by the Israeli police as “a terrorist incident,” which led to the killing of seven people and wounding of three others before the perpetrator was shot dead by the police. Israeli police commissioner Yaakov Shabtai said the shooting was “one of the worst attacks we have encountered in recent years”, reported AFP. Subsequently, after an exchange of fire, the attacker was “neutralised”, said the police. According to a report by Reuters, the gunman was a relative of a 17-year-old Palestinian who was shot dead on Wednesday during clashes with Israeli forces in West Bank, said the gunman’s family. “He is neither the first nor the last young man to get martyred and what he did is a source of pride,” said the 21-year-old’s father Moussa Alkam who claims that he did not have prior knowledge about his son seeking revenge, reported Reuters. Israel's Magen David Adom emergency response service in a video posted on Twitter said they were informed about the attack around 10:42 am (local time) and upon arrival they found two injured people lying down with “gunshot wounds to their upper body”. As per local media reports citing the Israeli police, the shooter, a 13-year-old Palestinian boy was “neutralised and injured”. Additionally, an Israeli police spokesman Dean Elsdunne told The Associated Press that the attacker “waited to ambush civilians on the holy Sabbath day,” adding that the teenager opened fire on a group of five civilians. The wounded teenager was later taken to the hospital, said the officials, he was also reportedly identified as an East Jerusalem resident and was suspected of having a terrorist motive. Furthermore, they have decided to increase gun permits for licensed civilians to defend against street attacks, a move which National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir prior to the meeting had said he would push for. “When civilians have guns, they can defend themselves”, said Ben-Gvir to the press outside a Jerusalem hospital on Saturday, reported AFP. International condemnation The attack drew international condemnation from several countries including the United States, United Arab Emirates, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine, and so on. Additionally, the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the attack was “particularly abhorrent” as it occurred at a place of worship and on International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
