iPhone users are using Notes app to cheat on their partners. Here's how and why | WION Explains

Taiwan’s Foxconn has reported record second-quarter revenue, fuelled by strong demand for artificial intelligence (AI) products, but has cautioned that geopolitical tensions and exchange rate volatility could pose challenges to future growth. According to Reuters, Foxconn, formally known as Hon Hai Precision Industry, said on Saturday that its April–June revenue jumped 15.82 per cent year-on-year to T$1.797 trillion. That figure not only set a quarterly record but also beat the T$1.7896 trillion LSEG SmartEstimate, which gives extra weight to the most consistently accurate analyst forecasts.

As reported by Reuters, Foxconn is the world’s largest contract electronics maker and Apple’s biggest iPhone assembler. The company credited robust AI demand for the strong performance in its cloud and networking products division. Customers include AI chip leader Nvidia, which has seen soaring demand for its processors as businesses invest heavily in AI technologies.

iPhone sales growth stalls

Despite the AI-driven boost, Foxconn reported “flattish” year-on-year revenue growth in its smart consumer electronics division, which includes iPhones. Foxconn April to June revenue hit a quarterly high, driven by AI chip demand from clients like Nvidia, yet the iPhone assembler flags rising US and China trade tensions and forex volatility as key challenges ahead.

Customers include AI chip leader Nvidia, which has seen soaring demand for its processors as businesses invest heavily in AI technologies. iPhone sales growth stalls Despite the AI-driven boost, Foxconn reported “flattish” year-on-year revenue growth in its smart consumer electronics division, which includes iPhones. Despite the warnings, Apple has been ramping up production in India. The company manufactured around $22 billion worth of iPhones in the country in the financial year ending March 2025, 60% more than the previous year.

Even if the United States goes ahead with a 25% tariff on iPhones made in India, Apple would still save more by manufacturing there than bringing production home, according to a new report from the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI). The report comes in response to US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose heavy tariffs if Apple continues to build iPhones outside the United States, especially in India. Trump warns Apple CEO Tim Cook over India production President Trump made his position clear on Friday, stating, "I have long ago informed Tim Cook of Apple that I expect their iPhones that will be sold in the United States of America will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India, or anyplace else." He added, "If that is not the case, a Tariff of at least 25% must be paid by Apple to the US Thank you for your attention to this matter!" During a visit to Qatar, Trump also expressed frustration directly to Apple’s CEO, "I had a little problem with Tim Cook yesterday. I said to him, 'my friend, I treated you very good. Apple’s India push grows despite pressure Despite the warnings, Apple has been ramping up production in India. According to a Reuters report, Apple even used chartered cargo flights to ship 600 tonnes of iPhones to the US to avoid potential cost hikes due to the tariff threat. Labour costs in India a big advantage The GTRI report breaks down the economics behind iPhone manufacturing. Even with a 25% tariff, India remains far cheaper than the US for production. Assembly workers in India earn about $230 a month, compared to around $2,900 in California, nearly 13 times more. Assembling a single iPhone in India costs about $30, whereas doing the same in the US would cost roughly $390. If Apple were to shift all production to America, its profit per iPhone could drop from $450 to just $60, unless prices are raised sharply for consumers. India plays a small but crucial part in the global iPhone chain The iPhone’s global value chain spans multiple countries. While Apple keeps about $450 of a $1,000 iPhone’s value through branding and software, other parts come from around the world: Taiwan: $150 (chipmaking) South Korea: $90 (OLED screens and memory) Japan: $85 (mainly cameras) US suppliers: $80 (from firms like Qualcomm and Broadcom) Germany, Vietnam, Malaysia: $45 (miscellaneous parts) China and India, despite being the key locations for assembly, each earn only about $30 per device, less than 3% of the retail price. Apple’s India plan gets a boost from government support In addition to low labour costs, Apple benefits from India’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme. This further strengthens India’s case as a manufacturing hub for the tech giant. The GTRI report argues that given the global structure of iPhone production and India’s cost advantages, it remains the most viable option for Apple, even under US pressure.

Ltd., trading as Hon Hai Technology Group in China and Taiwan, and known as Foxconn Technology Group internationally, is a Taiwanese multinational electronics contract manufacturer established in 1974 with headquarters in Tucheng District, New Taipei City, Taiwan. In 2023, the company's annual revenue reached 6.16 trillion New Taiwan dollars (US$192 billion) and was ranked 20th in the 2023 Fortune Global 500. It is the world's largest contract manufacturer of electronics. While headquartered in Taiwan, the company earns the majority of its revenue from assets in China and is one of the largest employers worldwide. Terry Gou is the company founder and former chairman. Foxconn manufactures electronic products for major American, Canadian, Chinese, Finnish, and Japanese companies. Notable products manufactured by Foxconn include the BlackBerry, iPad, iPhone, iPod, Kindle, all Nintendo gaming systems since the GameCube, Nintendo DS models, Sega models, Nokia devices, Cisco products, Sony devices (including most PlayStation gaming consoles), Google Pixel devices, Xiaomi devices, every successor to Microsoft's Xbox console, and several CPU sockets, including the TR4 CPU socket on some motherboards. As of 2012, Foxconn factories manufactured an estimated 40 per cent of all consumer electronics sold worldwide. Details of the Foxconn filing In a filing, Foxconn said, "Subsidiary Foxconn Hon Hai Technology India Mega Development Private Limited announces obtaining of machinery equipment" with a total transaction amount of "$ 31,804,528.45" from "APPLE OPERATIONS LIMITED". According to sources, the procurement has been done to add capacity in Foxconn's Tamil Nadu unit for manufacturing iPhone 16 Pro series smartphones. Apple earlier this month announced that it will begin to roll out its first-ever "made in India" iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max series soon. The supply of devices is expected to start late this month or early November.

A new bug has been identified in Apple iPhones wherein typing a certain set of characters can cause your device to crash. A security researcher on Mastodon revealed the bug on Wednesday. The person found that entering “”:: into yout phone can cause the device to freeze or reboot.

The built-in Home Screen Manager, SpringBoard, crashes when you go past your Home Screen pages to the App Library, and type “”:: in the search bar at the top of the screen. The same happens when you type the characters in the Search bar in the Settings app.

BGR, meanwhile, reported that typing the characters turned the iPhone screen black and showed a loading circle in the middle of the screen. After a few seconds, the lock screen returned. Doing the same in Settings shut down the Settings app.

Other reports suggest that results were different based on iOS versions. On iOS 17, the sequence led to the Home Screen interface crashing and restarting. Meanwhile, Spotlight Search froze on iOS 18 and 18.1 for a brief period but did not crash fully.

A Class 9 student in Delhi's Najafgarh area was detained after allegedly stealing his mother's gold ornaments to purchase an iPhone for his purported girlfriend on her birthday, according to a report by the Times of India.

The teenager had initially asked his mother for money to buy the expensive gift. The mother refused due to financial constraints. It was then that he resorted to theft. The boy’s father had passed away due to illness, and according to the report, he had been showing little interest in academics and was scoring average marks.

The incident took place earlier this week, and the boy was detained by the police on Wednesday (August 7). The case came to light when the boy's mother noticed her gold jewellery was missing and subsequently filed a First Information Report (FIR) with the police.

During the investigation, authorities ruled out external involvement after reviewing CCTV footage from the area and speaking with neighbours.

Suspicion quickly fell on the boy, especially after he went missing following the reported theft. Police questioned his friends and discovered that he had recently purchased an iPhone worth ₹50,000 ($595) and was in a relationship with a classmate.

The boy was eventually caught when he attempted to return home on Wednesday (August 7) evening, and the police seized the stolen iPhone from him. It remains unclear if he actually gifted the iPhone to his purported girlfriend.
