El Nino may melt Indonesia's 12,000-year-old 'Eternity Glaciers' by 2026

Floods, droughts, wildfires, and excessive heat during the summer months have already become frequent due to climate change, and experts believe not enough is being done to reduce their pace.

El Nino could doom Indonesia's rare tropical glaciers by 2026

Scheduled from September 6th to 7th, this visit will be Prime Minister Modi's second trip to Indonesia within a year, his prior presence being in November 2022 at the G20 summit in Bali. Notably, the visit will happen just a day before New Delhi hosts the annual G20 summit from September 9th-10th.

Amidst escalating concerns over deteriorating air quality, Indonesian officials have announced a series of measures aimed at tackling the pressing issue of pollution in Jakarta, the nation's capital.

As Jakarta finds itself consistently ranked among the world's most polluted cities, the government is taking decisive steps to address the crisis.

Since May, Jakarta has persistently held a notorious position among 10 most polluted cities globally. In a recent ranking by IQAir, a Swiss air quality technology company, Jakarta claimed the unfortunate top spot. This concerning trend has raised alarm bells and prompted urgent action from authorities, reported Reuters.

During a pivotal cabinet meeting, President Joko Widodo attributed the root causes of the problem to a trifecta of factors: excessive road traffic, an extended dry season, and industrial activities primarily reliant on coal.

While the president acknowledged these contributing elements, environmental groups have long singled out coal-fired power plants as a major source of pollution.

Driving change: Emission tests and remote work

In response to the pressing pollution crisis, the government has outlined a multifaceted approach to combat air contamination.

Officials have declared plans to conduct random vehicle inspections and mandate emission tests for drivers. Stringent penalties, including fines and even license revocation for repeat offenders, are being considered to enforce compliance.

Additionally, emission testing will become an integral component of the vehicle registration process. While specific implementation details remain forthcoming, the government is resolute in its commitment to improving air quality.

Environment Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar affirmed the government's intention to initiate these measures in Jakarta, with future plans to extend them to the greater Jakarta area. This phased approach reflects a cautious yet determined strategy to curb pollution.

Addressing the economic and environmental landscape

President Widodo has also called upon companies to adopt hybrid working models, thereby reducing commuting-related emissions.

The president further advocated for weather modification techniques in Greater Jakarta, aiming to alleviate pollution exacerbated by dry weather.

Weather modification, including methods like cloud seeding, has been proposed to induce rainfall and mitigate air contaminants.

Among the proposed measures under consideration are requirements for high-engine-capacity vehicles to use 98-octane fuel and mandating a minimum occupancy of four passengers per vehicle. These steps seek to incentivise the use of cleaner fuels and promote carpooling, both contributing to a cleaner environment.

(With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Emission tests and remote work: Indonesia capital Jakarta's new plans to tackle pollution

It's been four long months of heat in Indonesia and a village hasn't seen a drop of rain. Now, to combat this farmers in the village are digging up a dry river bed the salty and muddy water from which is used to save their slowly dying crops.

The irony is striking.

Woman beaten, chained to dog cage and forced to eat animal faeces by employer in Indonesia

A Muslim preacher in Indonesia was arrested on blasphemy and hate speech charges post his controversial Islamic boarding school incited protests after women were given permission to preach and pray beside men, the police released a statement saying on Wednesday.

Morning brief: Hung parliament in Spain, ferry with 40 sinks in Indonesia, and more

A search and rescue operation is underway as at least 15 people were killed and 19 were missing after a ferry sank off the coast of Indonesia's Sulawesi island on Monday (July 24).

Local reports said the ferry, with 40 people on board, sank just after midnight (1700 GMT, Sunday). It had been crossing from Lanto village on Buton island to Lagili village on Muna island in Southeast Sulawesi when the tragedy struck.

"Provisionally, there are 19 people who are still being searched for," Muhamad Arafah, head of the local search and rescue agency in Kendari city in Southeast Sulawesi was quoted as saying by AFP.

Six people survived the sinking and were rescued by the officials and sent to the hospital for treatment.

"All the victims have been identified and handed over to the families while the survivors are now being treated in local hospital," added Arafah.

The rescue images shared by the agencies showed victims' bodies covered in cloth on the floor of one of the local hospitals.

It is still unclear what caused the ferry to sink but preliminary investigations suggest it may have something to do with overcrowding.

Watch: 29 dead in Indonesia ferry disaster; search underway The rescue images shared by the agencies showed victims' bodies covered in cloth on the floor of one of the local hospitals. It is still unclear what caused the ferry to sink but preliminary investigations suggest it may have something to do with overcrowding. Ferry accidents common in Indonesia Ferries are a common mode of transport across Indonesia, an archipelago, made up of more than 17,000 islands. Naturally, the laws are lax and safety standards mostly non-existent. Last May, a ferry carrying over 800 passengers ran aground in shallow waters off East Nusa Tenggara province for two days. It remained stuck there before the authorities intervened and managed to dislodge it. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the accident. Iranian-flagged tanker seized by Indonesia for suspected illegal oil transfer

Thailand's foreign minister said Wednesday he met with ousted Myanmar democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi last week and she was in good health in her first known meeting with a foreign envoy since she was detained following a 2021 coup.

Suu Kyi has been seen only once since she was held after the February 1, 2021 putsch -- in grainy state media photos from a bare courtroom in the military-built capital Naypyidaw.

"There was a meeting, she was in good health and it was a good meeting," Don Pramudwinai told reporters on the sidelines of a meeting of Southeast Asian foreign ministers in the Indonesian capital Jakarta.

The coup that overthrew Suu Kyi ended Myanmar's brief democratic experiment and plunged the Southeast Asian nation into a bloody turmoil.

The Nobel laureate, 78, was later hit with a raft of charges and jailed by a junta court for a total of 33 years in trials that rights groups slammed as a sham.

Don confirmed that he met with Suu Kyi on Sunday and that she had called for renewed talks to end the crisis.

"She encouraged dialogue," Don said.

The meeting was private and lasted "over one hour", a spokesperson from Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs told AFP.

The Philippines' foreign minister said Don briefed ASEAN ministers on his meeting with Suu Kyi but reiterated any independent effort to restart the peace process should be in line with a five-point ASEAN plan agreed two years ago with Myanmar's junta.

"We feel any initiative should be consistent with the five-point consensus. He (Don) just reported on that," Enrique Manalo told reporters.

The junta has rebuffed repeated requests by foreign diplomats to meet Suu Kyi and her lawyers were barred from speaking to the media for much of her trial.

A range of jewellery, precious metals and a richly decorated cannon are set to be returned by the Netherlands, as part of hundreds of cultural artefacts and art which were looted in Indonesia and Sri Lanka, both former Dutch colonies.

On Thursday, the Ministry of Culture in The Hague stated that most of these artefacts are culturally significant and highly valuable.

Dutch state secretary for Culture and Media Gunay Uslu said, “This is a historic moment. It’s the first time we’re following the recommendations of the committee to give back objects that should never have been brought to the Netherlands. But we are not just returning objects. We are actually starting a period in which we are more intensively cooperating with Indonesia and Sri Lanka."

The decision taken of returning around 478 objects was taken after considering the government-appointed commission's recommendations last year, which talked about the illegal Dutch colonial acquisitions that have now been put on display in museums of the Netherlands.

Uslu stated that they acted upon the recommendations which were stated in a report published by the Dutch committee in 2020, which was investigating the artefacts stolen during the colonial era.

The government was appealed by the committee to be "willing to return unconditionally" any cultural artefacts looted in former Dutch colonies if asked by the source country.

"The Netherlands must assume responsibility for its colonial past by making the recognition and redress of this injustice a key principle of the policy on colonial collections," the report stated.

The commission was established on the basis of a request received by Indonesia to return the natural history collections and art pieces from its former colonial ruler.

Researchers at the Royal Botanic Gardens (RGB), Kew and their partners have found what is described as the only known member of the palm family which flowers and fruits almost entirely underground. The findings of the study were published in the journal PALMS on Monday. Given the plant’s unique characteristics, researchers have named the new-to-science species Pinanga subterranea, which means ‘underground’ in Latin.

Where was the plant found?

The plant and its fruit are native to the tropical island of Borneo in Southeast Asia where it is well-known to locals, some of whom even consume the bright-red fruit which is said to be sweet and juicy.

However, P.subterranea was overlooked by scientists for years now, who have found some 300 different species of palm on the island. The plant is known in at least three Bornean languages under the names, Pinang Tanah, Pinang Pipit, Muring Pelandok, and Tudong Pelandok, by the locals.

The international team of researchers said that the plant can be found across the primary rainforests of western Borneo and scattered across the borders from Malaysia’s Sarawak to Indonesia’s Kalimantan.

Need for collaboration

According to researchers, the plant was hiding in plain sight and has been overlooked by the scientific community for years now.

“Without the tip-off from our Malaysian colleague Dr Paul Chai, we probably would have mistaken this exciting new species for an unremarkable palm seedling and would have walked right past it,” said Dr Benedikt Kuhnhäuser a future leader fellow at RGB, Kew, who was also a part of the research team.

He added, “Instead, we have scientifically described an incredibly rare case of geoflory that is underground flowering, and the very first known example of its kind in the entire palm family. It truly is a once-in-a-lifetime discovery.”

What makes the plant so unique?

While a majority of flowering plants have evolved to develop their flowers and fruit above ground since it helps with pollination and the dispersal of seeds, there is a small subset of plants that have evolved to carry out this process underground.

Therefore, P.subterranea not only joins the more than 2,500 species of palm (that the scientists know about so far) but also at least 171 species across 89 genera and 33 plant families, which are known to flower and fruit underground through the process of geoflory and geocarpy, respectively.

However, P. subterranea is a case of a dual instance of geocarpy and geoflory, which has been all the more baffling for the researchers since the Pinanga genus is typically pollinated by insects and cannot move around as easily below ground as above.

The international team of scientists found a high number of seeds and fruit set by the plant which indicates that there has been a successful pollination mechanism which remains unknown to the researchers.

“I have been studying palms for 30 years and am amazed at how they continue to surprise us,” said Dr William Baker, senior research leader at Tree of Life at RBG Kew.

He added, “This unexpected find poses many more questions than it answers. What is pollinating the palm? How does the pollinator find the flowers underground? How did this phenomenon evolve and what on Earth will palms surprise us with next?”

Not the first discovery

It is also worth noting that while the recent team of international scientists collected specimens and ascertained that the species was new to science, Agusti Randi, an Indonesian researcher from the National University of Singapore and lead author of the study conducted had also encountered a couple of specimens of the palm back in 2017.

According to Randi’s study, at least one of the samples collected appeared to have been dug up by wild pigs while others were most likely eaten or crushed by the animals.

“The first time I encountered this dwarf palm in 2017 in a forest in West Kalimantan, a group of wild boars were digging in the soil around a population of P. subterranea, and I found several ripe fruit with a striking, bright red colour lying on the ground,” said the lead author about the findings.

He also spoke about how he noticed that the stems of the palm were dug up by the wild boars to find the fruit which was underground. “Their faeces were also strewn around in puddles with the seeds contained in them,” said Randi.
Researchers at the Royal Botanic Gardens (RGB), Kew and their partners have found what is described as the only known member of the palm family which flowers and fruits almost entirely underground.

Need for collaboration According to researchers, the plant was hiding in plain sight and has been overlooked by the scientific community for years now.
A sadistic global monkey torture ring stretching from Indonesia to the United States has been exposed, according to a report by BBC on Tuesday (June 20). The report found hundreds of customers in the US, the United Kingdom (UK), and elsewhere paying Indonesians to torture and kill baby long-tailed macaques on camera. The torture ring started on YouTube before it moved on to private groups on Telegram.

One of the main Telegram torture groups had hundreds of people gathered to come up with extreme torture ideas commissioning people in Indonesia and other Asian countries to carry them out. The goal was to create bespoke films where baby long-tailed macaques were abused, tortured, and sometimes killed on camera.

Twenty people under probe globally

The BBC report on Tuesday said that at least 20 people are under investigation in the case. These include three women living in the UK who were arrested last year and released under probe and one man in the US state of Oregon who was indicted last week.

Several arrests have already been made and the police are now pursuing the buyers of such films.

'Went from baby bottle teasing to fingers being...': Video distributor reveals gory details

Speaking to the BBC, Mike McCartney, a key video distributor in the US, talked about the moment when he first joined a monkey torture group on Telegram. McCartney, whose screen name was "The Torture King", said the group had a poll set up.

"Do you want a hammer involved? Do you want pliers involved? Do you want a screwdriver?" The resulting video was "the most grotesque thing I have ever seen," McCartney said.

He highlighted that the monkey torture ring was no different from drug money. "Drug money comes from dirty hands, this money comes from bloody hands," McCartney told the network.

A former motorcycle gang member who spent time in jail, McCartney entered the monkey torture world and ended up running several groups on Telegram where hardcore torture enthusiasts distributed videos.

"It went from baby bottle teasing to fingers being snipped off," he further said,

US probes keys suspects

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is investigating two key suspects in the case. Stacey Storey and a ring leader "Mr Ape." DHS agents seized Storey's phone where they found nearly 100 torture videos. The agents also found evidence that Storey paid for the creation of some of the most extreme videos produced.

Citing police sources, the BBC report said Storey was active in a torture group as recently as earlier this month. In January, she told the BBC that she was hacked and did not comment on the allegations.

Mr Ape, whose real name has not been revealed, told the network he was behind the deaths of at least four monkeys and the torture of many more.

The report further said that Storey, Mr Ape and Mike McCartney are three of the five suspects in the DHS investigation. They are yet to be charged but could be jailed for seven years if they are prosecuted based on evidence gathered by the department.

Monkey torture videos still accessible

BBC also reported that the videos were still easily accessible on Telegram and Facebook. Facebook said it removed the groups that were brought to the social media giant's attention. YouTube told BBC that animal abuse had no place on its platform and that the company was working to quickly remove violative content.

Telegram, meanwhile, said it was "committed to protecting user privacy and human rights such as freedom of speech." Telegram said its moderators could not proactively patrol private groups.
