Indonesia set to go to polls on February 14, three Presidential candidates in race

Australia set up a tasty Asian Cup quarter-final clash against South Korea or Saudi Arabia with a 4-0 win over a spirited but limited Indonesia on Sunday.

The Socceroos are trying to win the title for a second time and were again solid rather than spectacular in getting the job done in a niggly last-16 encounter in Doha.

Two goals in the first half, a deflected own goal on 12 minutes and a diving header by Martin Boyle on the stroke of the break, put Graham Arnold's side on their way.

With Indonesia out of gas at the end, Craig Goodwin volleyed in a rebound on 89 minutes for 3-0 and defender Harry Souttar made it four in stoppage time.

The scoreline flattered Australia but it was their third clean sheet in four matches and they have conceded only once.

Roberto Mancini's Saudi Arabia face Jurgen Klinsmann's South Korea on Tuesday for the right to meet them.&nbsp;

Indonesia were making their first appearance in the knockout rounds of the competition and were ranked 121 places below a physically imposing Australia.

They produced the first chance on six minutes when Netherlands-born attacker Rafael Struick prodded the ball first time narrowly over the bar.

Indonesia were behind soon after, Jackson Irvine crossing hard and low from the right and the ball flicking off the boot of defender Elkan Baggott and wrong-footing goalkeeper Ernando Ari.

Arnold puffed out his cheeks in relief midway through the half when Indonesia's Justin Hubner, who plays for the under-21 team of Premier League Wolves, let fly from distance.&nbsp;

Hubner, another born in the Netherlands, did not really get hold of it and goalkeeper Maty Ryan saved easily.&nbsp;

There was not too much in it for a lot of the half, a physical game reduced to niggly fouls and Indonesia twice letting fly with ambitious attempts that flew over the target.

Indonesia's vocal fans dominated at the compact Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium but they were silenced for a second time on 45 minutes when Scotland-born Boyle connected on a delicious Gethin Jones cross to stoop in for 2-0.

Mitchell Duke should have made it 3-0 with 10 minutes left but he missed the target with only the goalkeeper to beat, before Goodwin made the game safe.

Souttar headed in at the death to embellish the scoreline.

Debutants Tajikistan meet the UAE later Sunday, also in the last 16.

Two very rare Siamang gibbons, rescued from the illegal pet trade, were released into the wild in South Sumatra, Indonesia. The pair was released as a part of the rehabilitation programme in Punti Kayu, South Sumatra.&nbsp;

Siamang gibbons are known for their peculiar loud voice which they use as a part of communication and for marking their territory. Their large throat sacs are their distinctive feature.&nbsp;

The two rescued Siamang gibbons were found in extremely miserable conditions in a pet trade market in Indonesia, all coiled up into a small cage, diseased and traumatised.&nbsp;

Their rehabilitation process took five years, and the first two Siamang gibbons were released into the wild on 23 December 2023. Since their release, the rare species has shown positive signs of adapting to new surroundings, giving hope for further successful releases.

Due to their powerful singing voices, they are often targets of illegal pet trade in Indonesia.

<h2>Pair of singing Siamang gibbons released into the wild</h2>

Siamang gibbons are found in rainforests in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. They are very rare these days and are listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List. While habitat loss is one of the reasons for these special gibbons’ endangering, the illegal pet trade has caused more harm to them more than anything.

“Gibbons are one of the most popular primates for pets in the illegal wildlife trade and Siamangs are one of the biggest targets because of their beautiful forest singing,” said Made Wedana, country director for the Indonesia programme of the Aspinall Foundation wildlife charity.

Not only did they survive but also thrived after gradually adapting to their new surroundings at the centre. “The two Siamangs took to their surroundings very naturally and in the afternoon they started calling, which is a hugely positive sign,” said Wedana, who accompanied the pair to their release, said it went perfectly.

The team will now monitor the gibbons on foot for about four months to make sure they can fend for themselves. If everything goes well, other wild-born Siamangs rescued from the pet trade will also be released in South Sumatra.&nbsp;

Indonesian President Joko Widodo's son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka has been summoned by the election watchdog over an alleged campaign violation, an election official was cited as saying by Reuters.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo's son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka has been summoned by the election watchdog over an alleged campaign violation, an election official was cited as saying by Reuters. The election watchdog (Bawaslu) chapter in Central Jakarta served the notice to Gibran who had handed out free milk to people at a public "car-free day" event last month, which was purportedly in violation of campaign rules. "We need to have clarification from Gibran, we want to make sure whether it (the allegation) is right or not," Dimas Trianto Putro, an official at Bawaslu, told reporters. A 2016 Jakarta gubernatorial regulation bars "events for the interests of political parties" at car-free day events. During these events, vehicles are banned from entering the major thoroughfares. Although Bawaslu does not hold any authority to penalise Raka, it is hoping that the city authorities would mete out some sort of punishment towards him. An&nbsp;Indonesian navy vessel in Aceh drove away a boat carrying Rohingya rfugees&nbsp;from Myanmar, a military spokesperson said, as growing numbers of would-be refugees from the strife-torn country face hostility from locals.

The wooden boat was encountered in waters near Weh Island, off Sumatra, military spokesperson Nugraha Gumilar said.

The&nbsp;Indonesian military vessel "shadowed" the vessel, which it believed to be carrying the Rohingyas, a persecuted Myanmar Muslim-minority, until it was outside&nbsp;Indonesian waters and "would not return".

There are no estimates of how many Rohingya were on the boat, Nugraha said.

Indonesia's foreign ministry referred inquiries to the coordinating ministry for political, legal, and security affairs, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Over 1,500 Rohingya have landed in&nbsp;Indonesia&nbsp;since November, according to data of&nbsp;the United Nations'&nbsp;refugee agency (UNCHR), facing increasing hostility and rejection as locals grow frustrated at the numbers of boats arriving.

On Wednesday, a large crowd of&nbsp;Indonesian students stormed a convention centre housing hundreds of Rohingya in the Aceh capital, calling for their deportation.

The UNHCR said it was "deeply disturbed to see a mob attack on a site sheltering vulnerable refugee families."

For years, Rohingya have left Myanmar, where they are generally regarded as foreign interlopers from South Asia, denied citizenship and subjected to abuse. They usually leave&nbsp;to&nbsp;Indonesia&nbsp;or neighbouring Malaysia from November to April, when the seas are calmer.

Indonesia&nbsp;has urged Myanmar authorities to halt violence against Rohingya Muslims and says it will crack down on suspected human traffickers involved in the latest wave of arrivals.

At least 13&nbsp;people were killed and 38&nbsp;injured after an explosion took place on Sunday (Dec 24) in a Chinese-funded nickel processing plant in eastern Indonesia.

Among the dead were eight Indonesian workers and five foreigners, all Chinese.

The plant is located on the island of Sulawesi, eastern Indonesia, which is a hub for the mineral-rich country's production of nickel.&nbsp;

The significance of the industry has never been greater, especially in the view of growing demand for EV batteries and stainless steel.

A spokesperson of the complex said 38&nbsp;people “with minor and serious injuries are currently receiving medical treatment."

<h2>Unrest in plant due to Chinese funding</h2>

According to media reports, Beijing’s growing investment in the plant had stoked unrest over poor working conditions.

The Sunday incident happened during repair work on a furnace when a flammable liquid ignited and the subsequent blast caused nearby oxygen tanks to explode as well, AFP reported citing an official.

<h2>Firm “deeply saddened”</h2>

The firm which operates the industrial park said in a statement it was "deeply saddened by this disaster, particularly for the families affected".

"Their faces were burnt, their clothes were all burnt," a worker at the industrial complex was quoted as saying by AFP on condition of anonymity.

<h2>Past instances</h2>

Deadly factory incidents are not rare in Indonesia, where safety norms are often flouted and regulations overlooked.

In January, two Chinese workers lost their lives at another nickel smelting plant of the same complex following riots that broke out due to poor working conditions.

In June, a fire at the same plant where explosion occurred Sunday, left one dead and six others injured.

The facility is operated by Gunbuster Nickel Industry, a local unit of China's Jiangsu Delong Nickel Industry.

At least 13 people were killed and 38 injured after an explosion took place on Sunday (Dec 24) in a Chinese-funded nickel processing plant in eastern Indonesia. Among the dead were eight Indonesian workers and five foreigners, all Chinese. The plant is located on the island of Sulawesi, eastern Indonesia, which is a hub for the mineral-rich country's production of nickel. The significance of the industry has never been greater, especially in the view of growing demand for EV batteries and stainless steel. Watch: Indonesia: Volcano eruption at Mount Marapi, 12 climbers missing; search operation halted × The accident took place at around 5:30 am (local time), at the plant which is owned by Indonesia Tsingshan Stainless Steel in the Morowali Industrial Park. A spokesperson of the complex said 38 people “with minor and serious injuries are currently receiving medical treatment." Unrest in plant due to Chinese funding According to media reports, Beijing’s growing investment in the plant had stoked unrest over poor working conditions. As investors brace themselves for uncertainties ahead of Indonesia's national elections in february, the rupiah is set to weaken heading until 2024. Before elections, the Rupiah has historically lagged its peers.

Indonesian Rupiah looks poised to weaken heading into 2024

As Indonesia approaches its national elections in February 2024, the resilience of the rupiah is under scrutiny, with analysts predicting a potential weakening trend in the currency.<o:p></o:p>

According to a Bloomberg report, BNY Mellon Corp., HSBC Holdings Plc., and PT Bank Mandiri project the rupiah to trade around 15,800 against the dollar in the first quarter of the coming year, citing historical trends and concerns over the change of leadership after a decade.<o:p></o:p>

Historically, the rupiah has exhibited underperformance compared to its emerging market peers leading up to elections. Analysts point to worries about political stability and policy continuity, especially as Indonesia is on the brink of selecting a successor to President Joko Widodo after his decade-long tenure. <o:p></o:p>

Bloomberg cited Joey Chew, the head of Asian FX research at HSBC, who noted, "During the past three elections, the rupiah consistently underperformed select EM peers in the four to six weeks prior."<o:p></o:p>

The impact of election uncertainty is already evident in the rupiah's performance. Despite being Asia's best performer earlier this year, the currency has weakened the most against the dollar this quarter. Foreign investors withdrew nearly $600 million from Indonesian equities since October, but a cushion was provided by inflows of about $900 million in bonds. <o:p></o:p>

However, Bloomberg's scorecard ranks the nation's sovereign debt near the bottom among emerging economies.<o:p></o:p>

The upcoming elections hold the key to the rupiah's trajectory, with the results indicating whether the new government will adhere to President Widodo's policies that supported export earnings and reduced the current account deficit. <o:p></o:p>

While leading candidates Prabowo Subianto and Ganjar Pranowo pledge to continue Widodo's economic policies, rival contestant Anies Baswedan has expressed intentions to revisit some, including plans for a new capital.<o:p></o:p>

President Widodo, widely known as Jokowi, will complete his 10-year term next year. His fiscal policies successfully narrowed the fiscal deficit from pandemic-induced highs, and the economy outpaced regional peers. The official declaration of the winner is expected in March, but a runoff poll in June could occur if no candidate secures more than 50 per cent of the votes.<o:p></o:p>

Aninda Mitra, head of Asia macro and investment strategy at BNY Mellon, highlights potential risks from an extended lag between elections and new government formation, which could expose the rupiah to policy uncertainty. He adds that the central bank is expected to remain on hold through the elections, providing a buffer against political uncertainty in the months ahead.<o:p></o:p>

Japan is set to quadruple its intake of Indonesian migrant workers, welcoming an additional 100,000 individuals over the next five years. This strategic move is to alleviate Japan's escalating labour shortages attributed to its ageing population.

Japan initiated the Specified Skilled Workers (SSW) program in 2019, alongside the Technical Intern Training Program (TITP), attracting foreign workers to address the growing demand. According to a report by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, Japan&nbsp;requires&nbsp;6.7 million foreign workers by 2040 to sustain its economic growth rate.

China's TikTok has agreed to spend $840 million to buy most of Indonesian tech conglomerate GoTo's e-commerce unit – a move that appears to allow it to restart its online shopping business in Southeast Asia's largest economy.

It also said it will invest further in the business, Tokopedia, which is Indonesia's biggest e-commerce platform, for a total outlay of $1.5 billion.

TikTok had been forced to close its relatively new e-commerce service, TikTok Shop, in Indonesia after the country banned online shopping on social media platforms in September, citing the need to protect smaller merchants and users' data.

The new partnership will commence with a pilot period carried out in close consultation with and supervision by relevant regulators, the companies said in a joint statement.

"We are creating an Indonesian e-commerce champion, combining Tokopedia's strong local presence with TikTok's mass market reach and technological prowess," GoTo CEO Patrick Walujo said in a statement.

"GoTo now sits on a much stronger foundation and we expect this partnership to bring many benefits not just for e-commerce, but for our on-demand services and fintech businesses as well," he said.

GoTo's businesses include ride-hailing, delivery and financial services.

Under the deal, TikTok, which is owned by China's ByteDance, will buy 75.01% of Tokopedia and inject TikTok Shop's Indonesia business into the enlarged Tokopedia entity.

Officials at Indonesia's trade ministry did not respond to requests for comment.

Many of Indonesia's more than 270 million people are active social media users and TikTok has been looking to translate its 125 million user base there into a significant source of e-commerce revenue.

TikTok Shop is currently available in only a few countries including the United States, Britain and Singapore, according to its website.

The deal will be concluded by the first quarter of 2024 and Tokopedia will receive a $1 billion promissory note from TikTok that can be used to fund working capital needs, the companies said.

Tokopedia competes with Shopee owned by Singapore-headquartered Sea and Lazada owned by Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba.

It saw half-year gross revenue climb 14% to 4.5 trillion rupiah ($288 million) in August while its underlying loss narrowed sharply to 752 billion rupiah from 3.7 trillion rupiah a year ago.

Shares in GoTo, however, tumbled 13% on Monday - their biggest percentage decline in six months - as some investors took profits after the stock had rallied on expectations of a deal with TikTok.

Indonesia's e-commerce industry is set to expand to be worth about $160 billion by 2030 from $62 billion this year, according to a report by Google, Singapore state investor Temasek Holdings and consultancy Bain &amp; Co.

On Sunday, Mount Marapi erupted, spewing an ash tower of 3,00 metres, taller than the volcano itself, into the Sumatra sky. Marapi has stayed at the third-highest of four alert levels since 2011 which indicates above-normal volcanic activity.&nbsp;

The forceful dispersion of volcanic ash over nearby districts has left roads and cars coated in a layer of ash.

In response to the eruption, authorities implemented strict safety measures, prohibiting residents and visitors from engaging in any activities within a three-kilometre radius of the volcano's crater.

Mount Marapi: Death toll rises to 22 after Indonesian volcano's eruption

The volcanic eruption at Mount Marapi has resulted in 11 hikers dead and 12 missing, showcasing the relentless threat posed by the Pacific Ring of Fire. With its vast number of active volcanoes, the Indonesian archipelago faces yet another challenge of survival against natural disasters. Our detailed report follows the aftermath of this tragic eruption.

Gravitas: Indonesia's Volcanic Calamity: The Death Toll of Mount Marapi

Eleven climbers died in a volcanic eruption in Indonesia on Monday (Dec 4), forcing the authorities to halt their search operation for the remaining missing 12 people.

The eruption of the Marapi volcano in West Sumatra began on Sunday and according to local media reports around 75 climbers were stuck at that time.

The 2,891-metre-high volcano spewed ash as high as 3 km (9,843 ft) into the air, prompting the authorities to raise an alert to the second-highest level and prohibiting residents from going within 3 km (1.86 miles) of the crater.

<h2>Ash blankets villages&nbsp;</h2>

A video circulating on social media showed the climbers were evacuated to a shelter, their faces and hair smeared with volcanic dust and rain.

Falling ash covered several villages and blocked sunlight, National Disaster Management Agency spokesperson Abdul Muhari said.

Authorities distributed masks and urged residents to wear eyeglasses to protect them from volcanic ash, he said.

While the authorities managed to rescue 28 climbers, search operation was initiated to rescue the other climbers.

Ash blankets villages A video circulating on social media showed the climbers were evacuated to a shelter, their faces and hair smeared with volcanic dust and rain. #BREAKING: Massive volcanic eruption of the Marapi volcano in Indonesia trapped 42 climbers in the area - Indonesia’s Mount Marapi has erupted on Sunday and began releasing ash over the local villages. - 70 climbers were on the mountain when the eruption happened and they got… pic.twitter.com/vrvpjTUKXt — Terrence Daniels (Captain 🍀 Planet) (@Terrence_STR) December 3, 2023 × Rescue ops halted due to small eruption On Monday, the rescue officials found 11 climbers dead, while three more survivors were found alive. Indonesia is a vast archipelago comprising thousands of islands within the Ring of Fire, a horseshoe-shaped zone encircling the Pacific Ocean, characterised by high seismic and volcanic activity.

The tectonic activity in the Pacific Ring of Fire is a result of the movement of several tectonic plates beneath the Earth's surface.

Indonesia, specifically, sits at the convergence of several major tectonic plates, including the Indo-Australian Plate, the Pacific Plate, and the Eurasian Plate. The interactions of these plates create a dynamic geological environment, leading to the formation of numerous volcanoes and a heightened risk of earthquakes.

Spaniard Jorge&nbsp;Martin&nbsp;won Saturday's sprint race at the Indonesia MotoGP to overtake rival Francesco Bagnaia at the top of the championship standings and turn the title race on its head. Pramac rider&nbsp;Martin&nbsp;is now seven points clear of reigning world champion Bagnaia after claiming his fourth straight sprint race victory in hot and humid conditions.

Luca Marini, who claimed pole position in qualifying, took second place, with Marco Bezzecchi completing the podium a week after surgery for a broken collarbone.

Martin, 25, will look to capitalise on his new lead at Sunday's main event after Bagnaia finished eighth, up from 13th after struggling earlier in the day to finish outside the second round of qualifying for the first time this season.

"I feel super. Starting from sixth maybe was not the best, but at least I was able to overtake,"&nbsp;Martin&nbsp;Motor&nbsp;racing-Massa's lawyers give F1 and FIA another month.

Martin&nbsp;finished more than a second ahead of the Italian Marini, who earlier set a record lap at the Mandalika circuit on the resort island of Lombok.

He said he hoped he could "finish the weekend in the same way" at Sunday's main event, where he will again start on the second row with Bagnaia back in the middle of the pack. It is the first time&nbsp;Martin&nbsp;has led the MotoGP championship in his career.

Maverick Vinales took an early lead from Marini but he struggled for rear grip as&nbsp;Martin&nbsp; charged through the field to secure top spot.

Bezzecchi, the Italian who sits third in the overall standings, capped a stunning ride to secure a podium place after his injury and late arrival in Lombok on Friday morning. He closed the gap on his closest rival Bagnaia to 49 points with tomorrow's grand prix and five more race weekends remaining. He is 56 points off&nbsp;Martin's top championship spot.

Practice leader Aleix Espargaro and Brad Binder collided and crashed on the second lap. Espargaro failed to finish but Binder dusted himself off to complete the race at the back of the pack.&nbsp;

Alex Marquez -- 11th in the standings -- pulled out of the sprint and Sunday's main event due to a rib injury sustained in a heavy crash at the Indian MotoGP last month.

Indonesia’s police have named the chief of the anti-graft commission as a suspect in a corruption case involving the former agricultural minister who was detained on graft charges&nbsp;last month. The announcement late Wednesday (Nov 22) is being viewed as a setback for one of Indonesia’s most respected agencies, in a country where corruption continues to be rampant.&nbsp;

<h2>What do we know about the case?</h2>

Firli Bahuri, chief of the Corruption Eradication Commission, is the latest official in President Joko Widodo’s administration to face graft allegations and has been named by the police to face what they called a “corruption case in the form of extortion.”

This is also the first time that the anti-corruption body chief has been accused of the crime since it was formed in 2002 after the fall of dictator Suharto.&nbsp;

Bahuri, according to the police, is a suspect in the alleged case involving extortion and receiving gifts or gratuities in legal dealings with the agriculture ministry between 2020 and 2023.

Ade Safri Simanjuntak, Jakarta police’s director for special crime, told reporters they have “sufficient evidence to name...the KPK chief as a suspect in a corruption case in the form of extortion,” referring to the Indonesian initials of the corruption commission.

Bahuri would be questioned, “as the KPK chief in his capacity as a suspect in alleged corruption crime,” he added.&nbsp;

The officials have confiscated foreign currency transaction documents from Singapore, and $477,730 (7.4 billion rupiah) after raids conducted on two locations and interviewing more than 90 people, according to the Jakarta police official.&nbsp;

If found guilty of graft charges, the KPK chief could face life in prison as a corruption conviction for state officials carries a maximum sentence. In a post on their website, Indonesia’s police said that Firli is suspected of extorting money from Syahrul Yasin Limpo.&nbsp;

Limpo, the former agriculture minister was detained last month following a series of accusations which also included alleged stealing of over $800,000 in public funds. The allegations against Bahuri are said to be linked to Limpo’s case.&nbsp;

In the meantime, as per Indonesian law, the president must suspend any KPK chief named as a criminal suspect. When asked about allegations against Bahuri, Widodo said on Thursday (Nov 23) that he would “respect the process of law.”

<h2>About the KPK and its chief</h2>

Bahuri, a former police inspector general, became the KPK chief in 2019 amid protests of “save the KPK” when critics said changes to the law governing the agency had weakened it.&nbsp;

The commission has prosecuted hundreds of politicians, officials, and businessmen since its formation two decades ago.

Meanwhile, the anti-corruption body’s Deputy Commissioner Alexander Marwata told reporters on Thursday (Nov 23) that the KPK leadership “remains solid and committed to ensure the KPK will continue carrying out its duties as mandated by the KPK law.”

He also said that Bahuri has not been removed from his post.&nbsp;

Three boats carrying over 500 Rohingya refugees have arrived in Indonesia's westernmost province, according to a UN agency.&nbsp;This marked the most recent group of Rohingya refugees in Indonesia who have undertaken a sea journey to escape Myanmar this year.

The ethnic Rohingya Muslims, facing persecution in Myanmar, have consistently embarked on perilous journeys aboard fragile wooden boats for years, seeking refuge in Muslim-majority countries like Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand.

Faisal Rahman, a protection associate with the United Nations refugee agency, shared information with AFP news agency stating that one boat arrived in Aceh Province’s Bireuen district with 256 people aboard, while at least 239 others arrived in Aceh’s Pidie region, and a smaller boat carrying 36 arrived in East Aceh. They were found in several spots, he added.&nbsp;

The United States and Indonesia are set to engage in discussions on a potential minerals partnership, with a focus on stimulating the trade of nickel, an essential component in electric vehicle (EV) batteries, Reuters reported on Monday.

As per the sources quoted by Reuters, during Monday's meeting between Indonesian President Joko Widodo and U.S. President Joe Biden at the White House, the focus of the talks would be on the next&nbsp;steps that might lead to formal negotiations between the two countries.

"There's a lot of work to do before we are able to formally announce negotiations on a critical minerals partnership," the sources told Reuters.

The Biden administration, cautious about environmental, social, and governance standards in Indonesia, is closely examining the viability of such a deal. The sources revealed plans for further consultations with U.S. lawmakers and labour groups in the coming weeks.

The administration is particularly concerned about ensuring that any potential nickel supply is produced with minimal environmental impact.

Indonesia, which reportedly has the world's largest nickel ore reserves, had proposed discussions in September to initiate a trade deal for critical minerals. The aim was to have exports from Indonesia covered under the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Despite Indonesia's massive nickel reserves, most of its nickel is currently processed into crude metal. The nation is eager to develop an EV supply chain to harness the full potential of its nickel reserves for battery materials.

One of the crucial aspects under discussion is the environmental impact of nickel mining in Indonesia. Acknowledging this, sources close to the administration emphasised that the Biden administration is focused on ensuring that any potential nickel supply adheres to stringent environmental standards.

Indonesia's nickel mining has been linked to heavy deforestation and water pollution, prompting the need for careful consideration of the environmental implications.

Under guidelines issued in March, the U.S. requires a certain amount of critical minerals in EV batteries to be produced or assembled in North America or a free trade partner. This requirement is essential for EVs sold in the United States to be eligible for tax credits.

Indonesia, lacking a free trade agreement with the U.S., complicates matters. The Biden administration is also exploring ways to exclude nickel extracted from Indonesia but processed in China from receiving IRA credits.

The global market value for the nickel industry is estimated at $33.5 billion in 2022, despite an oversupplied market. With the only U.S. nickel mine set to close in a few years and no nickel smelter in the country, achieving Biden's goal for the U.S. to lead in EV manufacturing poses a significant challenge.

To address this, the government has allocated nearly $115 million to Talon Metals, aiming to support a nickel processing plant in North Dakota that will supply Tesla Inc. Talon is currently seeking permits for its proposed Minnesota nickel mine, facing opposition from Indigenous groups.

Many in the U.S. mining sector argue that the Biden administration should prioritise approving domestic projects over seeking international supply.

President Joe Biden at the White House, the focus of the talks would be on the next steps that might lead to formal negotiations between the two countries. "There's a lot of work to do before we are able to formally announce negotiations on a critical minerals partnership," the sources told Reuters.
