The archaeologists have stated that a giant pyramid which is hidden in an underground hillside in Indonesia is much older than Egypt's Giza Pyramids or England's Stonehenge and is likely to compete with the oldest megalithic structures ever created by humans.

This megalithic site in Indonesia is called Gunung Padang. Indonesia's hillside, which is filled with ancient stone structures and is on the island of West Java, is considered sacred by locals, who call it a 'punden berundak' which means a stepped pyramid for the terraces that slowly move towards its peak.
The site's surface has barely been brushed by the archaeologists, and already it is shaping up to become a "remarkable testament" to human ingenuity.

As per experts, Gunung Padang is the world's oldest pyramidal structure and was built atop an extinct volcano before civilisations existed and humans delved into agriculture.

Indonesia arrests militants suspected of plotting to disrupt election

Indonesia, an important country in Southeast Asia and fourth most populous nation in the world is going to hold simultaneous presidential and legislative elections on February 14 next year. The elections will decide who will be Indonesia's next president after Joko Widodo who is the current president of the country. About 205 million of Indonesia's more than 270 million people are eligible to vote in the polls.

There are several contenders for the coveted presidential post. But first, let's take a look at issues facing the country.

Main issues before Indonesia

Climate Change

Indonesia is one of few countries in the world which are witnessing nothing less than the a major existential threat. Indonesia's capital Jakarta is quite literally, sinking. Although the issue has roots in 18th century colonial factors, rising sea levels due to climate change pose direct and existential threat to Jakarta. It is the world's fastest-sinking city. The government has been making efforts to stop the subsidence of the city, a new capital is being built in Nusantara.

Economic issues

According to data from Asia Development Bank (ADB), almost 10 per cent of Indonesia's population lives below the national poverty line. That is a large number for a nation with a population of more than 270 million. Though the percentage has shown a downward trend, it remains a prominent issue for the country.

There is also an issue of disparity in development. It has been often seen that there tends to be huge gap in wealth, health and unemployment rate between regions that are densely populated (Sumatra, Java) and those away from economic centres and are sparsely populated (Maluku, Papua and more). Equitable development is something Indonesia continues to struggle with.

There are also challenges like strengthening the national currency (rupiah), taming inflation and averting recession.

Military and Defence issues

Like other countries in Southeast Asia, Indonesia finds itself embroiled in issues created by China's claims in the South China Sea.

Who are the contenders for the presidential office?

All eyes are on three players who are vying for the coveted post

Prabowo Subianto

(Prabowo Subianto (right) with his running mate. Image: Reuters)

Prabowo Subianto (72) is a former special forces commander and a son of late strongman president Suharto. This is his third run for the presidential office. He suffered defeat twice at the hands of Joko Widodo in 2014 and 2019.

Opinion polls in recent months have shown that Subianto holds a narrow lead over his nearest rival.

He comes from an elite family and has considerable support among the public. He does face allegations of wrongdoings linked with abductions of democracy activists in 1990s. But he denies these allegations.

Prabowo is a leader of Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) party. His running mate is Gibran Rakabuming Raka who is Joko Widodo's eldest son

What are some of Prabowo Subianto's poll promises?

He has promised to continue President Widodo's programme to build Nusantara, the new capital. He says he will develop the maritime sector. He intends to increase state revenue-to-GDP ratio to 23 per cent and also establish state revenue agency.

He has promised to raise threshold for non-taxable income, a populist move. He claims that he would fully eradicate extreme poverty within two years of taking office. He plans to gradually increase defence budget and modernise military. Prabowo has promised that under him, Indonesia will achieve food, energy and water self-sufficiency.

Ganjar Pranowo

Ganjar Pranowo (54) is another candidate in the fray. He is from the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle. Ganjar was former governor-general of central Java. It is Indonesia most populous province. Ganjar has been Prabowo Subianto's close second in opinion polls.

Mahfud MD, Indonesia's widely respected coordinating security affairs minister, is Ganjar's running mate

Ganjar has huge support from ordinary Indonesians as he is not part of political and military elite and has humble background. Widod has supported Ganjar.

Ganjar is active on social media and is popular with younger voters.

What are some of Ganjar Pranowo's poll promises?

Like Prabowo Subianto, Ganjar has said that he will continue programmes started by President Widodo. He has kept a growth target of 7 per cent for the Indonesian economy. He has promised that he will create 17 million new jobs.

He promises to speed up construction of new capital and modernise military hardware.

He says he will expand social welfare coverage.

Despite his popularity, he has lagged behind in recently opinion polls. He does not belong to any political party but enjoys backing from three.

What are some of Anies Baswedan's poll promises?

Anies has said that he targets 5.5 per cent to 6.5 per cent annual economic growth between 2025 and 2029. He has promised to create 15 million jobs. He aims to raise the tax-to-GDP ratio from 10.4 per cent in 2022 to 13-16 per cent by 2029.

He has said that he would rein in the inflation and keep it between 2 to 3 per cent. Anies has also said that he will create 2 million new affordable housing units.

Wildfires in Indonesia have resulted in drop in air quality in neighbouring Singapore, revealed official readings. At 0600 GMT (2 pm local time) on Saturday (Oct 7), the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index in eastern and central Singapore was above 100. When the index crosses this mark, people are advised to reduce strenuous outdoor activities. Singapore's National Environment Agency has said it detected 212 hot spots on Indonesia's Sumatra island on Friday. The number was up from 65 on Thursday and 15 on the day before that. In Indonesia, the traditional land clearing methods are followed almost every year to clear land for palm, and paper plantations.
The Australian government has agreed to pay more than 120 Indonesians who say that Canberra wrongly detained or prosecuted some of them as adult people smugglers while they were still children settling a major class action suit. Canberra has agreed to pay more than A$27 million (US$17 million) to the victims.

Settlement offer

The class action brought by the Indonesians – some of whom were as young as 12 – at the time was recently settled after the Australian officials were said to have used a deeply flawed wrist X-ray technique to determine their age and locked them up in adult prisons and prosecuted in adult courts.

“It’s fair to say we’re delighted to have gotten this outcome...this has been 10 years in the making,” said Sam Tierney, one of the lawyers for the plaintiffs, as quoted by the BBC.

According to reports, most applicants involved in the class action suit were detained between 2009 and 2012 after arriving in Australia on people-smuggling boats during a highly charged political climate around border protection.

The case began with over 120 class action members but has reportedly grown in the two years since proceedings began. It was not until Thursday (Oct 5) that the parties reached an agreement to settle for $17 million, plus the legal fees.

Notably, the settlement is not an admission of wrongdoing and is pending final approval by the federal court before it can be paid out.

What do we know about the case?

The Indonesians had told Australian authorities at the time that they were lured onto the boats as children with offers of highly paid work, often unaware of their destination or that they were to transport asylum seekers.

Furthermore, the Indonesians who brought the class action suit also said that they told authorities they were children but the Australian federal police relied on a wrist X-ray technique to convince courts they were adults which led to their detainment and prosecution as adult people smugglers.

Australian law mandated that any children found on these boats should be returned to their home countries. Colin Singer, a prison guard, told BBC back in 2018, that he believed the Australian government had “knowingly” imprisoned the children, and that the Indonesian government “didn’t want to do anything” to help them.

The lead plaintiff, Ali Jasmin, also accused Australian officials of negligence and racial discrimination. He also claims to have been assaulted in Hakea prison in 2010 where he was held on remand.

Indonesia's southern Sumatra province is battling a huge forest fire, blanketing the entire area with haze clouds. These haze clouds have now extended to the nearby provinces and cities, degrading the air quality in the entire region.

Indonesia denies smog from forest fires drifted to Malaysia

High-speed rail connecting two of Indonesia's biggest cities, the bullet train is set to become the first in Southeast Asia. After several delays and setbacks, the $7.3 billion project, which is a component of China's Belt and Road infrastructure effort and is mostly funded by Chinese state-owned enterprises, opened to the public on Monday.

The high-speed rail, named "Whoosh," is of Chinese make and will seamlessly link Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, with Bandung, the densely populated capital of West Java province, reported the Associated Press.

President Widodo, alongside other dignitaries, is expected to ride the inaugural Whoosh train from the first station, Halim KCBJ in eastern Jakarta, to the final station, Tegalluar in Bandung.

Final ticket prices were yet to be confirmed at the time of reporting. However, PT KCIC estimated one-way fares ranging from 250,000 rupiah ($16) for second-class tickets to 350,000 rupiah ($22.60) for VIP seats. Passengers travelling to downtown Bandung will need to take a feeder train from the Padalarang station, adding an extra 20 minutes to their journey at an estimated cost of approximately 50,000 rupiah ($3.20).

Indonesia debuts southeast Asia's first China-funded bullet train named 'Whoosh'

A 33-year-old Indonesian woman was jailed for two years for eating pork after reciting an Islamic phrase and posting the whole act on TikTok.

Earlier this week, a court in South Sumatra city found Lina Lutfiawati, who goes by the name Lina Mukherjee, guilty of "inciting hatred" against religious individuals and groups.

She has been fined 250 million rupiah ($25,200), and if she fails to pay, then her jail term will be extended by three months.

Indonesia, a Muslim-majority country, forbids eating pork and those found guilty can also be tried under blasphemy laws.

According to reports, Lina was travelling in Bali when she made the controversial TikTok video. Bali is the only place in Indonesia where Hindus are in the majority.

Video went viral in March

The matter came to light in March after the controversial TikTok video went viral.

In the video, Lina can be heard saying “Bismillah”, which means “in the name of God” in Arabic.

The clip gained millions of views and was widely criticised, prompting another Indonesian to report her to the police for "knowingly eating pork skin as a Muslim".

Then in May, Lina was charged for disseminating hateful information, saying it was an act of hostility over ethnicity, religion, and race.

Many conservative groups across the country also issued rulings calling the video blasphemous. They included the Ulema Council, Indonesia's top Muslim clerical body.

TikToker runs a business in India

Lina is a lifestyle influencer who has more than two million TikTok followers. She also runs a business in India.

Video went viral in March The matter came to light in March after the controversial TikTok video went viral. TikToker runs a business in India Lina is a lifestyle influencer who has more than two million TikTok followers. She also runs a business in India. The whole episode has left the Indonesian people divided on social media, according to BBC.
Singapore is taking proactive steps to harness the changing dynamics of global manufacturing flows by partnering with Malaysia and Indonesia to bolster its regional supply chain. This strategic collaboration aims to capitalise on rising investments from India, China, and Southeast Asia in recent years.

During an event hosted by LSEG and Reuters Newsmaker, Managing Director of Singapore’s Economic Development Board (EDB) Jacqueline Poh highlighted the importance of fostering a robust manufacturing base that encompasses Singapore, the southern Malaysian state of Johor, and the nearby Riau Islands of Indonesia. This collaborative effort is envisioned to position Southeast Asia as a formidable production hub.

Singapore’s objective is twofold: to maintain its status as one of the world’s premier financial centres and leverage the ongoing wealth shift towards Asia. Concurrently, the city-state is actively establishing itself as a wealth management hub catering to the ultra-rich.

However, the competition for a share of this growth is intensifying across the region as economies and businesses recover from the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Poh cautioned that the EDB anticipates a relatively subdued 2023 in terms of investments following a record-breaking 2022. In the previous year, Singapore secured S$22.5 billion (approximately $16.5 billion) in fixed asset investments, with over 66 per cent originating from electronics manufacturing projects.

“The primary driver for investments was the semiconductor super cycle," Reuters quoted Poh as saying. However, the electronics industry has faced a downturn, leading to a reversal of this trend.

Currently, Singapore holds an 11 per cent share of the global semiconductor market, with 20 per cent of global semiconductor equipment being manufactured within the country.

Additionally, Poh emphasised the EDB’s commitment to promoting “green finance” and renewable energy investments, encompassing sectors such as solar, wind, and hydropower.

Rising Family Offices

Singapore is maintaining its status as a sanctuary for the wealthy, who are establishing family offices to handle their money outside of their native countries in order to avoid political unrest and economic unpredictability.

According to data from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), there will be 1,100 single family offices in Singapore by the end of 2022, up from 400 at the end of 2020. These offices manage investments, taxes, asset transfers, and other financial problems for the wealthy.

Poh maintained that Singapore has made efforts to foster these family offices by enhancing training initiatives focused on asset management and financial planning.

“We've worked with the Wealth Management Institute at the MAS to start a brand-new course for family offices so that our family offices have to attend this new sort of training to better understand how they can deploy their capital,” Reuters quoted Poh as saying.

Indonesia: 5.9 quake hits Minahassa Peninsula in Sulawesi island

Indian PM Narendra Modi visits Jakarta for ASEAN Summit, a day before G20 Summit begins in India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled an ambitious multi-modal connectivity initiative at the just-concluded 20th ASEAN-India Summit in Indonesia.

The initiative aims to link Southeast Asia, India, West Asia and Europe, which experts suggest could be an alternative to China's One Belt, One Road programme.

Former Indian diplomat Anil Trigunayat, echoed this view, while speaking to WION.

Emphasising the growing strategic partnership between India and ASEAN, Ambassador Trigunayat said, "India and ASEAN, after completing 30 years of their strategic cooperation, have taken the relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership last year."

He pointed out that Prime Minister Modi's visit to the ASEAN Summit, ahead of the G20 Summit being held this weekend in India, underscores the importance India attaches to ASEAN as a partner.

Connectivity has emerged as a pivotal area of cooperation between India and ASEAN.

Trigunayat highlighted that India's multi-modal connectivity initiatives, particularly those involving Thailand and Myanmar, aim to establish critical transportation arteries connecting Southeast Asia.

He also pointed out that India is already utilising the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and the Chabahar port, further enhancing connectivity options.

Many ASEAN countries are part of China's BRI initiative. Therefore, Trigunayat asserted that having alternative, efficient, and reliable connectivity options is essential for these nations.

"I don't think it will replace BRI per se, but it will provide an alternative that is more viable and doable."

Former secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, Anil Wadhwa, underlined the economic benefits of India's enhanced connectivity with ASEAN, the Gulf, and Europe.

He stressed on the potential for Indian ports to become transshipment points, boosting the economy and creating jobs.

"India is conscious of the fact that it will benefit immensely from transit trade being at the centre of ASEAN and the gulf and Europe. Lately, India has paid a lot of attention to connectivity, improving transportation links and improving infrastructure including port facilities. Indian ports, if developed as transshipment points will benefit the economy and create much-needed jobs and employment. India's trade with the Gulf countries and Europe has grown and India would be keen to ride in that momentum.

However, he noted, "Equating it with the Chinese BRI would be inappropriate because the idea of this connectivity has yet to be fleshed out."

Here is the 12-point plan unveiled by India in Jakarta during the India-ASEAN Summit:

He stressed on the potential for Indian ports to become transshipment points, boosting the economy and creating jobs. "India is conscious of the fact that it will benefit immensely from transit trade being at the centre of ASEAN and the gulf and Europe. Lately, India has paid a lot of attention to connectivity, improving transportation links and improving infrastructure including port facilities. Indian ports, if developed as transshipment points will benefit the economy and create much-needed jobs and employment. India's trade with the Gulf countries and Europe has grown and India would be keen to ride in that momentum. However, he noted, "Equating it with the Chinese BRI would be inappropriate because the idea of this connectivity has yet to be fleshed out." 12-point plan India's 12-point proposal for strengthening India-ASEAN cooperation was presented during the summit by Indian PM Narendra Modi. "Prime Minister presented a 12-point proposal for strengthening India – ASEAN cooperation covering connectivity, digital transformation, trade and economic engagement, addressing contemporary challenges, people-to-people contacts and deepening strategic engagement," MEA statement read. Here is the 12-point plan unveiled by India in Jakarta during the India-ASEAN Summit: • Establishing multi-modal connectivity and economic corridor that links South-East Asia-India-West Asia-Europe • Offer to share India’s Digital Public Infrastructure Stack with ASEAN partners • ASEAN-India fund for Digital Future focusing on cooperation in digital transformation and financial connectivity • Renewal of support to Economic and Research Institute of ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) to act as knowledge partner for enhancing engagement. • Call for collectively raising issues being faced by Global South in multilateral fora • An invitation to ASEAN countries to join Global Centre for Traditional Medicine being established by WHO in India • Call for working together on Mission LiFE • Offer to share India’s experience in providing affordable and quality medicines to people through Jan-Aushadhi Kendras • A call for collective fight against terrorism, terror financing and cyber-disinformation • Invitation to ASEAN countries to join Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure • Call for cooperation in disaster management • Call for enhanced cooperation on maritime safety, security and domain awareness WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Indonesia refers to Modi as ‘PM of Bharat’ in invitation letter to ASEAN summit

Future cooperation on the Indo-Pacific, trade issues, the situation in Myanmar, and the recent controversy over China’s map are likely to be on the agenda as Prime Minister Narendra Modi leaves on Wednesday for a two-day visit, from September 6-7 to Jakarta to attend the annual ASEAN-India Summit and the East Asia Summit hosted by Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

Indian PM Modi to attend ASEAN-Summit and East Asia Summit in Jakarta

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a two-day visit to participate in the 20th ASEAN-India Summit and 18th East Asia Summit, both of which are being hosted in Jakarta by Indonesia, the current chair of ASEAN, said the Indian foreign ministry, on Tuesday (September 5).

A ‘short visit’

In a bid to fortify India’s active involvement in the ASEAN community and reinforce diplomatic bonds in the Indo-Pacific region, the Indian PM will travel to Indonesia on September 6 and 7.

Secretary (East) in Ministry of External Affairs Saurabh Kumar said on Tuesday it would be a “short visit” considering New Delhi is gearing up to host the G20 summit. In line with this, PM Modi will not hold any bilateral meetings while he is in Jakarta.

The upcoming visit will also mark the Indian PM’s second trip to Indonesia within a year after he attended the G20 summit in Bali, back in November. The visit will end just a days before New Delhi hosts the annual G20 summit between September 9-10.

‘ASEAN centrality is a central point’

Responding to a question asked by WION correspondent Sidhant Sibal about India’s focus on the ASEAN and Indo-Pacific neutrality during the upcoming PM’s visit, MEA secretary (East) responded by saying, “ASEAN centrality is a central point of our message to the ASEAN so this definitely would be communicated (by PM Modi).”

He also thanked the Indonesian side which shifted the East Asia summit to morning to facilitate the PM’s return for the G20 summit in New Delhi.

When asked about the possibility of a discussion between the leaders during the upcoming summit on China’s new map , the MEA official said, “It’s difficult to anticipate what leaders will discuss…mutual concerns will (be) addressed be it regional or international. Whether there will be consensus or not…can’t anticipate as of now.”

Earlier this month, China, in the 2023 edition of its map showed the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, Aksai Chin region, Taiwan and large parts of the South China Sea as part of its territory. The move has since sparked objections and outrage from India, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Taiwan.

Importance of the upcoming visit

The MEA secretary (East), also said how the 20th ASEAN-India Summit is special since it is the first one after the elevation of the India-ASEAN relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership back in 2022.

Last year, Indian Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar represented the country at the India-ASEAN Summit and other related summit meetings in Cambodia. The summit meetings marked a turning point as they elevated India’s association with the bloc to the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership (CSP).

The Indian PM will also review the progress in ASEAN-India relations during his upcoming visit and chart the future direction of cooperation, said Kumar. He said that the theme of this year’s summit is ‘ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth.’

During the East Asia Summit PM Modi will discuss ways to further strengthen the summit’s mechanism, with the other members, as well as matters of regional and international interests with the Leaders of ASEAN countries and its eight dialogue partners, including India.

The engagement holds significant importance within the framework of India’s Act East Policy,’ with the ASEAN partnership standing as a cornerstone of India’s foreign policy strategy.

Indonesia arrested at least 88 Chinese nationals over their alleged involvement in cross-border online romance scams, said the police after receiving a tip from the Chinese security ministry.

As per the police, the suspects, including five women, were part of a telephone scam and online love fraud cartel.

Riau Islands police spokesperson Zahwani Pandra Arsyad said that the suspects were operating from a shophouse, a building with mixed commercial and residential use, located in an industrial park.

Primarily, they were targeting fellow Chinese nationals, who as per the reports, were called over the internet and tricked into transferring money. A probe into the matter revealed that the gang had been carrying out such operations since early this year, trapping dozens of victims in China. It is not yet clear as to how much money they have accumulated since then.

“We are still investigating this case, including whether there are any Indonesians among the victims,” Arsyad said, adding that none of the suspects can speak or write the Indonesian language. “If there are none, we would deport all of them immediately.”

Arsyad said that the members of the cartel had come from China to Indonesia for three months at a time since January this year, and were committing crimes from Indonesia as China had clamped down on their networks.

“If there are none, we would deport all of them immediately.” Arsyad said that the members of the cartel had come from China to Indonesia for three months at a time since January this year, and were committing crimes from Indonesia as China had clamped down on their networks. In the year 2019, the US Federal Trade Commission announced that romance-related fraudulent activities were the ones behind generating more losses than any other consumer scams reported to the agency. In a statement, it had said that in such scams criminals usually trap victims online, via either a dating site or social media. In a report released on Wednesday (August 30), the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said that the criminal gangs have compelled dozens of people in Southeast Asia into participating in illicit online scams, including false romantic ploys, bogus investment pitches and illegal gambling schemes. It cited “credible sources” that at least 120,000 people in strife-torn Myanmar and roughly 100,000 in Cambodia “may be held in situations where they are forced to carry out online scams.” (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Indonesia: Magnitude 7.0 quake strikes in deep sea in Bali, Lombok islands

A school on Indonesia's main island has stirred controversy by partially shaving the heads of 14 girls. The school's headmaster said that this drastic action was taken after accusations that these students were wearing their Islamic hijab headscarves incorrectly.

Indonesia, a diverse archipelago with a population of 270 million, has grappled with the enforcement of dress codes in conservative regions. Although the country moved in 2021 to ban mandatory dress codes in schools, activists argue that both Muslim and non-Muslim girls have long been compelled to wear hijabs.

Unidentified teacher's drastic step

The incident occurred at the state-owned junior high school SMPN 1 in Lamongan, East Java. An unidentified teacher took it upon herself to partially shave the hair of these 14 Muslim girls last Wednesday (August 23). The headmaster, known by his single name Harto, said that the school has since issued an apology and suspended the teacher responsible.

Harto told AFP that there is no official obligation for female students to wear hijabs, but they were encouraged to wear inner caps beneath their headscarves for a neater appearance. Unfortunately, these students did not adhere to this suggestion, leaving their fringes visible.

Mediation and psychological support

Following the incident, the school initiated mediation with the affected students' parents and reached a mutual understanding. Furthermore, the school has committed to providing psychological assistance to the girls to help them cope with the trauma.

Human rights groups have strongly condemned the teacher's actions and are demanding her dismissal. Andreas Harsono, an Indonesia researcher at Human Rights Watch, called the Lamongan incident one of the most intimidating cases ever in Indonesia. He emphasised the need for sanctions against the teacher and the involvement of psychologists to support the victims.

A troubling trend

This incident is not isolated. In a 2021 report, rights groups highlighted cases where schoolgirls had their hijabs forcibly cut for incorrect wearing or faced penalties and expulsion for not wearing hijabs at all. These incidents underscore concerns about rising religious intolerance in Indonesia, a country that officially recognises six major religions.
