Indonesia's eastern province of Maluku was struck by an earthquake on Sunday morning, measuring a magnitude of 6.0. Media reports citing country's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency said that the epicentre of the quake was situated 154 kilometres northwest of the Kepulauan Tanimbar district, with a depth of 153 kilometres.&nbsp;

Indonesia, located in the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire where tectonic plates converge, frequently witnesses earthquakes. However, no reports of material damages have been received thus far, according to reports.&nbsp;

In April, the earthquake-prone Sumatra Island in Indonesia was struck by a devastating earthquake of 7.3 magnitude. The tremor prompted a tsunami warning from the country's geophysics agency. Subsequent aftershocks were recorded, some measuring around 4 on the Richter scale.

The Pacific Ring of Fire is a major area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. It is a horseshoe-shaped region that stretches for approximately 40,000 kilometres (25,000 miles) and encompasses the coasts of several countries, including the western coast of North and South America, the eastern coast of Asia, and the islands of the western Pacific.

The area is characterised by intense tectonic activity due to the movement and collision of several lithospheric plates. The region is situated along the boundaries of several tectonic plates, including the Pacific Plate, the North American Plate, the Eurasian Plate, and the Philippine Sea Plate, among others.

These plates interact with each other in various ways, such as subduction (where one plate is forced beneath another) or collision, leading to seismic activity.

This tectonic activity results in frequent earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and the formation of trenches, volcanic arcs, and mountain ranges.

During the Shangri-La Dialogue summit in Singapore, Indonesia's defense minister Prabowo Subianto, put forth a plan to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. However, his proposal received prompt criticism from other attendees. Subianto called for immediate cessation of hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, citing the adverse effects of the conflict on Asian nations' economies and food supplies.

He suggested a ceasefire at the current positions of the conflicting parties and the establishment of demilitarised zones, which would be guaranteed by observers and United Nations peacekeeping forces.

Subianto also proposed a "referendum in the disputed areas" to be organised by the UN. Furthermore, he expressed Indonesia's readiness to contribute units to a potential UN peacekeeping operation.

Indonesia, following its non-aligned diplomacy approach, had previously attempted to mediate peace.&nbsp;

However, Subianto's proposal faced criticism at the summit, with EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell stating that peace in Ukraine must be achieved on "just" terms, implying a fair resolution.&nbsp;

Subianto responded by emphasising Indonesia's perspective and history, stating that he was presenting a conflict resolution plan without taking sides.

The plan includes calling for a ceasefire, taking into account Russia's security concerns, providing humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, facilitating prisoner exchanges, and lifting unilateral sanctions, among other measures.

However, this peace plan was met with skepticism by European Union politicians due to its vagueness. While Beijing claims to be a neutral party in the conflict, it has faced criticism for its refusal to condemn Russia's invasion.&nbsp;

Indonesia’s peace plan to end Russia-Ukraine war draws criticism at Shangri-La Dialogue

In a significant development for India's diplomatic ties, three Islamic countries — Indonesia, UAE, and Bangladesh — attended the G20 tourism meeting held in Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir union territory.

This gathering marked&nbsp;the first international meeting in the union territory since the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of the erstwhile state into two union territories in August 2019.

Representing Bangladesh at the meeting was its High Commissioner Mustafizur Rahman, while the UAE sent two officials from its capital.

The presence of Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority country and a member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) as well as the G20, was particularly noteworthy. All three countries are members of OIC.

The development highlights the strengthening ties between India and these three nations, as evidenced by a series of high-level visits and engagements between them.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Indonesia's Bali last year to attend the G20 meet. Bangladesh and India have been emphasising the "golden phase" of ties, and the relationship with the UAE has grown leaps and bounds—from economy to food security.

The G20 Srinagar meet provided an opportunity for the participants to discuss and exchange ideas on tourism and related sectors. This engagement can contribute to the growth and development of the tourism industry in the region and facilitate the sharing of best practices among countries.

However, it is worth noting that some G20 member countries and invited guests decided not to attend the meeting.

In what comes as an unfortunate incident, a woman plummeted to her death at an Indonesian airport after forcing open the wrong set of doors of a lift and falling down the shaft. The incident was caught on CCTV cameras showing the last few minutes of the woman, identified as 38-year-old Aisiah Sinta Dewi. Dewi had gone to Kualanamu Airport in Medan, Northern Indonesia on April 24 to meet her niece at the check-in area. In the video footage, Dewi calmly walks into the double-sided cabin and pushed the button for the second floor before looking at her phone. Unaware that the lift opened on the other side as well, a confused Dewi started pressing the emergency buttons frantically and called her niece about the distressing situation. She later started to pry open the door and somehow managed to successfully do it. However, unfortunately, without looking down, she stepped out and plunged down the gap into the lift shaft. After the authorities investigated the smell, they stumbled upon Dewi's rotting body which had been lying in the shaft for three days. The lift, however, was working fine. Dewi's brother Raja Hasibuan blamed the authorities and their poor elevator security as the reason for her sister's death. "We asked for the video from the elevator because it was there that we lost contact with her," said Hasibuan. "This is an international-level airport. How are safety standards like this? The Indonesian authorities on Tuesday confirmed that the pigs supplied to Singapore from a farm were infected with the African swine fever (ASF) virus. The pig samples from the farm on Pulab Bulan in the Riau Islands province were tested,&nbsp;which make&nbsp;up for about 15 per cent of Singapore's&nbsp;total pork supply.

Honismandri, a veterinary authority official at the Riau Islands province, revealed that a new strain of virus might have infected the pigs as the symptoms varied from previous cases found in North Sumatra and other parts of Indonesia.&nbsp;

“They did not have diarrhoea or experience bleeding. The pigs might have been infected by migrating boars or crows from other islands nearby,"&nbsp;Honismandri was quoted as saying by The Straits Times.&nbsp;

<h2>What is&nbsp;African swine fever?</h2>

African swine fever (ASF) is a highly virulent and contagious disease in pigs whose mortality rate can reach 100 per cent. However, it does not infect humans.&nbsp;

The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) has stated that ASF is quietly becoming a&nbsp;major crisis for the pork industry in recent years. There is no effective vaccine for the disease and it&nbsp;not only affects the animal's health&nbsp;but also has a&nbsp;detrimental impact on biodiversity

"The virus is highly resistant in the environment, meaning that it can survive on clothes, boots, wheels, and other materials. It can also survive in various pork products, such as ham, sausages or bacon," the WOAH has stated in its advisory.&nbsp;

The disease has reached multiple countries across Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, and the Pacific, affecting both domestic and wild pigs.

The Indonesian authorities on Tuesday confirmed that the pigs supplied to Singapore from a farm were infected with the African swine fever (ASF) virus. The pig samples from the farm on Pulab Bulan in the Riau Islands province were tested, which make up for about 15 per cent of Singapore's total pork supply.

The pig samples from the farm on Pulab Bulan in the Riau Islands province were tested, which make up for about 15 per cent of Singapore's total pork supply. Honismandri, a veterinary authority official at the Riau Islands province, revealed that a new strain of virus might have infected the pigs as the symptoms varied from previous cases found in North Sumatra and other parts of Indonesia. “They did not have diarrhoea or experience bleeding. The pigs might have been infected by migrating boars or crows from other islands nearby," Honismandri was quoted as saying by The Straits Times. Indonesia was the previous chair of the mega economic grouping and handed over the Presidency during last year's Bali summit. The ambassador also praised India's efforts in hosting a diverse range of guests and commended the country for its efforts so far. India has already hosted G20 finance and foreign ministers' meetings and will be hosting the G20 summit in September. For the third time this month, people in Bali were met with the sight of a whale carcass. On Sunday, conservation officials announced that another massive whale has died after washing up on the shores of a Bali beach. This is the third such incident in little more than a week. As per officials, the latest specimen is a 56-foot-long (or 17-metre-long) male sperm whale. It was found stranded on Yeh Leh beach in west Bali's Jembrana district on Saturday afternoon. While the cause of death is still unknown, speaking to AFP a local marine and fisheries official shared suspicions that the mammal might've died of sickness "just like the whale found stranded a few days ago."

"The body looked skinny and sickly," said Permana Yudiarso, the&nbsp;local marine and fisheries official.

Yudiarso told AFP that they were trying to pull the carcass to the shore.

"We are currently trying to pull the carcass to the shore to make it easier for the necropsy test and we will bury it after the test is concluded," he said.

The necropsy test as per AFP will take around three weeks. However, forensic experts have identified bleeding in the sperm whale's lungs, its colon was found to be filled with fluids.

Police have reportedly cordoned off the area around the massive whale. This has been done to prevent people from stealing its meat or body parts.

Before this, since the beginning of April,&nbsp;two dead&nbsp;whales have washed up on Bali's beaches. On April 1st, a Bryde's whale weighing more than two tonnes and at least 11 metres long was founded stranded on a beach in Tabanan. The whale's carcass as per AFP was already rotten when discovered. Subsequently, on Wednesday, April 5th, an 18-metre-long male sperm whale was stranded in the Klungkung district, on Bali's eastern coast.&nbsp;

Indonesia is the world's second-biggest contributor of marine debris. The Southeast Asian archipelago's massive marine rubbish problem was brought into the spotlight a few years ago. In 2018, in a similar incident, a sperm whale was found on an Indonesian beach. Upon investigation, the mammal's stomach was found to contain more than 100 plastic cups and 25 plastic bags.

While the cause of death is still unknown, speaking to AFP a local marine and fisheries official shared suspicions that the mammal might've died of sickness "just like the whale found stranded a few days ago." Watch | Massive sperm whale dies after beaching itself on Bali beach "The body looked skinny and sickly," said Permana Yudiarso, the local marine and fisheries official. Yudiarso told AFP that they were trying to pull the carcass to the shore. "We are currently trying to pull the carcass to the shore to make it easier for the necropsy test and we will bury it after the test is concluded," he said. However, forensic experts have identified bleeding in the sperm whale's lungs, its colon was found to be filled with fluids. Police have reportedly cordoned off the area around the massive whale. This has been done to prevent people from stealing its meat or body parts. On April 1st, a Bryde's whale weighing more than two tonnes and at least 11 metres long was founded stranded on a beach in Tabanan. The whale's carcass as per AFP was already rotten when discovered. Subsequently, on Wednesday, April 5th, an 18-metre-long male sperm whale was stranded in the Klungkung district, on Bali's eastern coast. A Shaman in Indonesia accused of killing 12 people has been arrested. He made his clients believe that he could multiply their money through spells. Molly Gambhir tells you more.

Gravitas: Indonesian Shaman promised to multiply money

The police in Indonesia have arrested a village shaman who has allegedly killed at least 12 people after he had promised to multiply their money in Central Java. Several bodies were found buried in his garden. The 45-year-old&nbsp;shaman Slamet Tohari has also reportedly told the police that dozens of victims were interred on his property.&nbsp;

How did the police find the so-called shaman?

The arrest was made this week after a report was filed by the son of his most recent victim, a 53-year-old man named Paryanto, who&nbsp;told police that the shaman’s house in Banjarnegara in Central Java was the last known location of his father. Paryanto’s family lost contact with him back in late March, reported BBC.&nbsp;

Tohari, who has been charged with premeditated murder would promise people that he can magically multiply money and when the clients would ask for their money back, he would poison them, said police. The 53-year-old who hailed from West Java had informed his son of his location via a WhatsApp message and asked him to notify the police if he did not return by March 26.&nbsp;

About the case and findings

Acting on the report filed, authorities went to Tohari’s residence in Desa Balun village, Wanayasa district on Monday, where they found shallow graves at a nearby site some of which had two to three victims buried together and along with a bottle of mineral water in every grave, reported BBC.&nbsp;

The victims were aged between 25 and 50 years and had been buried for at least six months and the bodies did not show any signs of violence. The police believe Tohari has been killing people since 2020, reported the UK-based media outlet. The authorities have also detained an accomplice who was promoting money-multiplying services on social media, however, Tohari said he largely acted alone. &nbsp;

He modelled himself as a shaman since his grandfather&nbsp;Mbah Slamet had been one, and promised to multiply 70 million rupiahs ($4,683) to five billion rupiahs ($334,706), said the police. Subsequently, he would lure his victims to his house for a daytime ritual and then give them drinks mixed with potassium cyanide and a sedative.

The so-called shaman had also been jailed some four years ago for counterfeit money crimes and may face the death penalty on his current charges.&nbsp;

Indonesia: ‘Money-multiplying’ shaman accused of killing at least a dozen people, arrested

Indonesia has been stripped of the right to host the under-20 soccer World Cup, global governing body FIFA said on Wednesday. The decision to remove Indonesia as host of the May 20-June 11 tournament was taken after its football federation (PSSI) said it had cancelled the draw after the governor of the largely Hindu island of Bali refused to host Israel's team.

"FIFA has decided, due to the current circumstances, to remove Indonesia as the host of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023," a FIFA statement said.

Indonesia's president said on Tuesday that Israel's participation in the Under-20 World Cup to be hosted by his country meant no change to its foreign policy, stressing amid domestic protests that sport and politics should not be mixed.

Joko Widodo confirmed he had sent Erick Thohir, a cabinet minister and former Inter Milan chairman who heads the national football association (PSSI), to talk to soccer's world governing body FIFA after the draw for next month's tournament was cancelled over opposition to Israel taking part.

Jokowi, as the president is popularly known, underlined Indonesia's support for Palestine and a two-state solution and said Israel's qualification was secured long after his country won hosting rights.

"I hereby guarantee Israel's participation has nothing to do with the consistency of our foreign policy position toward Palestine, because our support for Palestine is always strong and sturdy," he said in a livestreamed address.

Meanwhile FIFA were determined not allow Indonesia to host the tournament and further highlighted their support to Israel.

"A new host will be announced as soon as possible, with the dates of the tournament currently remaining unchanged. Potential sanctions against the PSSI may also be decided at a later stage.”

The Indonesian island of Bali has witnessed an uptick in the number of Russian and Ukrainian tourists since the beginning of what Moscow has described as its “special military operation” in Kyiv. The reports of bad behaviour and criminal activities allegedly committed by Russian and Ukrainian tourists include overstaying their visas, working illegally as hairdressers, unauthorised tour guides and taxi drivers, reported CNN.&nbsp;

The incidents have reportedly prompted Bali Governor Wayan Koster to propose that a visa-on-arrival policy for visitors from the two aforementioned countries be terminated. “I have written a letter to the ministries (Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry and Law and Human Rights Ministry) requesting that the visa facility be revoked for Russians and Ukrainians”, said Koster, as per local media reports.&nbsp;

According to the Indonesian government, nearly 60,000 Russians visited Bali in 2022 after it lifted its Covid-related restrictions while 22,500 people from Russia have arrived on the island since the beginning of this year alone. On the other hand, over 7,000 Ukrainians arrived in 2022 while some 2,500 came to Bali in the first month of this year, reported CNN.&nbsp;

Indonesia allows citizens of&nbsp;certain countries including Russia and Ukraine to apply for a visa on arrival&nbsp;in the country, while others have to apply before departure. Meanwhile, the country’s Tourism Minister Sandiaga Uno said that the number of tourists from Russia and Ukraine “who have...caused problems is not yet significant”. He added,&nbsp;that any plans to change visa rules must be “carefully reviewed” and will be discussed with all the stakeholders.

While the reports of misbehaving tourists are not necessarily new in Bali, it seems as though Balinese authorities wish to make an example out of the tourists from the two countries, as per CNN. “Why these two countries? Because they are at war so they flock here,” Koster had said in a news conference previously.&nbsp;

According to a report by Bloomberg, Indonesia has deported some 47 people from the popular tourist destination amid a crackdown on foreigners for misusing their visas to work, out of which 13 were Russians.&nbsp;Reports also suggest that the Bali government is planning to ban tourists from renting motorcycles following a series of road accidents. Notably, in January, a Ukrainian and Russian visitor died in a vehicle collision.

According to local media reports, Koster has announced a province-wide crackdown on misbehaving foreigners which includes driving without a licence, not wearing a helmet, or driving dangerously. Furthermore, the Bali police, last week also launched a five-day special operation where over 475 police personnel will closely monitor foreigners in Bali. The officials have also reportedly assured that well-behaved visitors to Bali have nothing to worry about.&nbsp;

Bali mulls over terminating visa-on-arrival for Russians, Ukrainians. Here’s why

In some relief to the parents who have lost their children due to contaminated cough syrup, an Indonesian court has allowed them to file a class action lawsuit, said a report by BBC. The lawsuit has sought compensation of $195,000 for every child killed and about $130,000 for every child injured, said the lawyer of a mother who lost her daughter due to the cough syrup.&nbsp;

Nur Asiah, whose four-year-old daughter died last year due to the contaminated cough syrup told BBC that she and the relatives of 24 other victims will file a case against the Indonesian government as well as eight pharmaceutical companies. Notably, more than 200 children in the country have lost their lives due to acute kidney injury since 2022. &nbsp;

This also comes as countries Gambia and Uzbekistan reported around 100 deaths after children consumed toxic cough syrup. However, the Indonesian authorities have not found evidence that the two incidents are linked.&nbsp;

The investigation did find that the local chemical companies used industrial-grade solvent materials named Ethylene Glycol and Diethylene Glycol which are typically used in antifreeze solutions for air-conditioners or as brake fluid, amid a global shortage of pharmaceutical-grade solvents.&nbsp;

The cases have also prompted World Health Organization (WHO) to issue warnings about six cough syrups made in India and Indonesia. “We have tried our best by quickly finding causes, exchanging information with other countries, the WHO, and bringing in antidotes to treat toxic substances,” said an Indonesian Health ministry spokesperson as per BBC, adding that they are working on a compensation plan.&nbsp;

&nbsp;“No amount of compensation will make up for what has happened. It won’t bring back my child,” Asiah told BBC. Meanwhile, a lawyer from PT Afi Farma, one of the eight companies which are being sued that made the cough syrup used by the majority of children in this case said that it is “not appropriate” for the blame to only be placed on the pharmaceutical industry and that the government should also be held accountable.&nbsp;

“Honestly, pharmaceutical companies are also victims - victims of a crime by the suppliers of the raw materials,” said a lawyer from PT Universal Pharmaceutical Industries told BBC. The company said that it had been using the same Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (FDA), certified system for three decades now which included its buying the ingredients from an FDA-approved supplier.
