India-based defence company BrahMos Aerospace expects to close a deal this year to sell Indonesia supersonic cruise missiles worth at least $200 million, as it looks to expand its presence in Southeast Asia. BrahMos Aerospace CEO Atul D. Rane said that it was in advanced discussions with Jakarta on a deal worth $200 million to $350 million under which it had offered to supply shore-based missiles and a version that can be mounted on warships.

An&nbsp;Indonesian court on Thursday&nbsp;jailed&nbsp;a&nbsp;policeman&nbsp;but cleared two other officers of negligence&nbsp;over&nbsp;crowd control measures at a local soccer match that led to one of the world's deadliest&nbsp;stadium&nbsp;stampedes. The October 2022 derby in Malang, East Java, between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya ended in chaos with 135 spectators killed, many&nbsp;crushed as they fled for exits after police fired tear gas into the crowd.

Last week, two Arema FC match officials were also&nbsp;jailed&nbsp;for negligence, in the first verdicts&nbsp;over&nbsp;the stampede. One of the policemen, Hasdarmawan, was on Thursday sentenced to one and a half years in prison. Authorities had earlier said Hasdarmawan had ordered police to fire tear gas, which soccer's world governing body FIFA has banned as a crowd control measure.

Two other officers, Bambang Sidik Achmadi and Wahyu Setyo Pranoto were cleared of wrongdoing and freed by the judge. Their lawyer could not immediately be reached for comment. Controversial trial in Indonesia leaves school students trudging like ‘zombies’, parents fume

Indonesia is building a new capital twice the size of New York City to escape the congested and polluted current capital of Jakarta. As construction is underway experts worry about the environmental impact of such a large-scale project as well as there are concerns about the indigenous population being displaced from the area. @ShivanChanana brings you this report.

Indonesia's new capital at the cost of environment?

On the crowded island of Java, the volcano Merapi erupted, sending clouds of hot ash and a mixture of rock, lava, and gas as far as 7 kilometers down its slopes.

Indonesia is all set to move its capital from Jakarta to Borneo over environmental issues such as&nbsp;being congested, sinking into seawater, and being prone to earthquakes.&nbsp;

Officials said the new metropolis city will be a "sustainable forest city," that puts the environment at the heart of the development and will be carbon neutral by 2045, Associated Press reported.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo envisions the construction of the new capital as a "nostrum for the problems in Jakarta, which will also allow the country to start afresh."&nbsp;

Why is Indonesia moving its capital?&nbsp;

Jakarta, home to&nbsp;10 million people has been described as the world's most rapidly sinking city which is estimated to be completely submerged by 2050. &nbsp;

Officials claimed that the main reason behind moving the capital&nbsp;is uncontrolled groundwater extraction which has been exacerbated by the rising Java Sea due to climate change. Although it's just not water issues only, the air is also heavily polluted, and it floods regularly due to clogged roads, and the estimated&nbsp;congestion cost is around $4.5&nbsp;billion a year.&nbsp;

This prompted the president to plan for a new capital, which he wants&nbsp;to establish as the city of 'Nusantara,' that will allow the construction of government buildings and housing from scratch.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/indonesia-to-start-building-new-capital-city-worth-34-billion-in-august-see-pics-491055#the-new-capital-491044">Also read |&nbsp;Indonesia to start building new capital city worth $34 billion in August - see pics</a>

Environmentalists, however, are&nbsp;not happy with the decision and have been raising their concerns as this plan will cause massive deforestation and will pose threat to the habitat of endangered species like&nbsp;orangutans.&nbsp;

An Indonesian non-governmental organisation, Forest Watch Indonesia had in its 2022 report warned that most of the forested areas in the new capital are&nbsp;production forests, which means that&nbsp;they could be permitted for forestry and extractive activities which&nbsp;would cause deforestation.&nbsp;

According to AP, at least five villages with over 100 Balik people are relocating because of the construction.&nbsp;

Till now, no status regarding the protection of the remaining natural forests in the new capital has been mentioned.

Indonesia all set to move its capital from Jakarta to Borneo, environmentalists raise concern

A landslide caused by torrential rain killed at least 15 people and left dozens of others missing on an island in Indonesia’s remote Natuna regency on Monday, disaster officials said. Rescuers and authorities fear that the death toll will rise, National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesperson Abdul Muhari said. The agency estimated that about 50 people were still missing, with downed communications lines and bad weather hampering the rescue efforts.

At least 15 people were killed and more than dozens injured after a landslide caused by incessant rains struck Serasan Island, Riau Islands Province—one of the outermost islands in Indonesia. &nbsp;

The landslide occurred late Monday morning, following heavy rainfall. Authorities said that the death toll might continue to rise as search and rescue operations progress.

National Disaster Mitigation Agency's spokesperson Abdul Muhari, citing local officials on Riau Islands, said that "11 body bags had been filled" and "50 people are estimated missing". He added that rescue officials are facing difficulty in accessing the far-flung island.

"Normally it takes five hours by fast boat. Tomorrow the National Disaster Mitigation Agency will deploy a helicopter to speed up the logistics delivery process,” he was quoted as saying.

Local media reports showed that the landslide flattened and fully covered the houses that were near the edge of a cliff on Serasan island, between Borneo and mainland Malaysia.

According to Riau Islands Disaster Mitigation Agency's spokesperson Junainah, the affected areas have been cut off from the main communication network and hence making it difficult to receive the latest information on the ground.

"The weather is unpredictable. The wind is strong and the waves are currently high," the official was quoted as saying by AFP news agency.

Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) has issued early weather warnings for moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning across the region through March 7.

Landslides during the rainy season are pretty common in Indonesia as it has been witnessing&nbsp;deforestation on a mass scale, raising concerns over flooding in different areas of the archipelago nation.

The most recent example of a flood was the one reported in Banjar district, in the Indonesian part of Borneo, that inundated more than 17,000 houses and disrupted lives for a month.

Landslide strikes Indonesia, at least 15 killed, 50 feared missing

Indonesia's Industry Ministry said on Monday (March 6) that the country will tighten customs checks at small ports to prevent illegal import of second-hand shoes. The step was taken after media reports said that footwear donated for a recycling scheme in Singapore were shipped to Indonesia.

Reuters had reported in the month of February that ten pairs of donated shoes were exported for resale in Indonesia.

Since 2015, Indonesia has banned import of second-hand clothing and footwear over concerns of hygiene as well as to protect the country's textile industry.

In a statement titled "dismantling the scandal of illegal imports of used shoes", Indonesia's Ministry of Industry said that as a result of the Reuters story it would increase checks at ports to intercept any illegal second-hand shoe shipments.

"This incident shows that the illegal import of used shoes is carried out in an organised manner and misuses social projects," Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita was quoted as saying in the statement.

"The practice of illegal importation of used shoes must be stopped because it has a bad impact on the domestic footwear industry."

The statement said that the ministry was also proposing new incentives for local footwear manufacturers importing raw materials for their businesses.

In July 2021, Dow and Sport Singapore, a government agency, launched a programme to grind down old shoes with rubberised soles into granules to be used to make new jogging tracks and playgrounds. The public donated tens of thousands of shoes to the scheme.

On Feb. 27, two days after the Reuters story was published, Dow and Sport Singapore issued a statement apologising to the public for a "lapse" in its supply chain which had led to some shoes meant for recycling being shipped to Indonesia.

Days after a New Zealand pilot was abducted by rebels from Indonesia, photos and videos have been released by the separatist group from the restive Papua province that show him alive. The fighters from the armed wing of the Free Papua Movement — the West Papua Liberation Army — reportedly abducted Phillip Mark Mehrtens, the pilot from Christchurch, last week. &nbsp;Mehrtens,&nbsp;who works for Indonesian aviation company Susi Air,&nbsp;was set to pick up 15 construction workers facing death threats apparently over building a health centre in the remote Nduga district.&nbsp;

The pilot was held hostage with five passengers, who were later released because they were locals. The abduction was reported last Tuesday (February 7). In a statement cited by the news agency Reuters, the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) said the pilot would not be released until the government acknowledged the independence of West Papua. "Our plan to evacuate the workers angered the rebels, who responded by setting fire to the plane and seizing the pilot," district chief Namia Gwijangge, one of five people on board when the plane landed, was quoted as saying in a report.&nbsp;

Watch: Rebels demand independence for West Papua × While this is said to be the first such incident of abduction by the separatists since 1998, tensions between the rebels and the government have been on a rise since 2018. Indonesia: 5.2 magnitude earthquake hits Papua, four killed as building collapses

A pilot from New Zealand was taken hostage by rebels in Indonesia’s restive Papua region after setting fire to his plane which was carrying six passengers.

The militants of the West Papua&nbsp;Liberation Army, an offshoot of the Free Papua Organisation, hijacked the plane shortly after it landed at Paro Airport in the mountainous district of Nduga on Tuesday.

The pilot was identified by the local police as Philip Mark Mehrtens. While other passengers, including a young child, were released because they were indigenous Papuans, reports Independent.

A combined team of police and military personnel has been sent to the area, Papua Police Chief Inspector Mathius Fakhiri told reporters on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) said that they have “arrested” the pilot and added that they won’t release him until their demand for independence is not met.

“We have taken the pilot hostage and we are bringing him out,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

“We will never release the pilot we are holding hostage unless Indonesia recognizes and frees Papua from Indonesian&nbsp;colonialism.”

This is the second time that they have resorted to abduction seeking to free Papua from Indonesia.

In 1996, during the peak of the Free Papua Movement, 26 members of a wildlife research mission were held captive in the neighbouring district of Mapenduma. Some hostages were held for more than four months.

According to reports, the plane, operated by Indonesian aviation company Susi Air, was carrying about 450kg of supplies from an airport in Timika, a mining town in the neighbouring Mimika district.

New Zealand Prime Minister&nbsp;Chris Hipkins&nbsp;said the embassy in Indonesia is working on the case.

“I don’t have any other details at this point that I can share,” he told Radio New Zealand.

A low-level insurgency has simmered in the region ever since Papua was incorporated into Indonesia in 1969 an UN-sponsored ballot that received heavy criticism.

Thousands of workers in Indonesia held a protest in the capital city of Jakarta on Saturday (January 14), urging Parliament to reject an emergency Presidential order issued last month to replace the controversial Jobs Creation Law. Protesters held a banner which said, "Say no to outsourcing," while some other banners read "Refuse job creation emergency decree because there is no emergency situation," a report by news agency Reuters said.&nbsp;

Damar Panca Mulia, 38, one of the protesters, told Reuters the decree was a ploy by the government to ensure the implementation of the job law. "This regulation degrades worker's welfare, reduces labour protections and causes widespread damage - on agrarian issues, the environment, protection of women," Mulia said, adding that job creation should be in line with workers' welfare improvement, but this decree was a counter to it.&nbsp;

Another protester told the news agency on Saturday that the regulation created uncertainty for workers as they could be easily fired and would also get a lower severance.&nbsp;

The Jobs Creation Law was passed in 2020, revising over 70 other laws and it was welcomed by foreign investors for cutting red tape. However, the law also lead to nationwide protests from workers, students and green groups who said it eroded labour and environmental protections, Reuters earlier reported. In 2021, the constitutional court ruled that the passage of the law was flawed because of inadequate public consultation.&nbsp;

On December 30 last year, the Indonesian government issued an emergency regulation to replace the law with President Joko Widodo saying, "We know it looks like we're normal now, but global uncertainty, the risk is haunting us ... Actually the world is not doing fine."&nbsp;

Legal experts criticised the emergency regulation by saying it was an attempt by the government to bypass proper debate in Parliament. On other hand, Labour party chairman Said Iqbal said outsourcing and minimum wage regulation in the decree were among the issues of concern. "We don't want the state to become only an agent for dirty entrepreneurs to weaken workers' welfare," Iqbal told reporters on Saturday.&nbsp;

Ahead of watchdog report, Indonesian president admits to country's human rights violation record

An earthquake measuring&nbsp;7.6&nbsp;on the Richter scale jolted&nbsp;the Tanimbar region in Indonesia on Tuesday, according to&nbsp;European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC).&nbsp;

The earthquake was&nbsp;at a depth of 95&nbsp;kilometres below the earth's surface, said EMCS. The aftershocks of magnitude 5.5 were recorded, according to&nbsp;Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

There were no reports of damage or victims but the tremors were felt on the island of Papua, Timor, Maluku archipelago as well as Darwin,&nbsp;capital of Australia's Northern Territory.&nbsp;

An initial Tsunami warning was generated by the Indonesian geophysics agency which was later taken back.&nbsp;

This is not the first time that the Tanimbar islands have endured such an earthquake. Previously, an earthquake&nbsp;measuring&nbsp;7.3 struck the island in June 2019. However, at the time, no Tsunami warning was issued.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Indonesia, owning to its geographical position in the highly seismic 'Ring of Fire' -&nbsp;an area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean is highly susceptible to earthquakes.&nbsp;

In November last year, a shallow 5.6 magnitude earthquake rocked the town of&nbsp;Cianjur in Indonesia's West Java. Despite experts terming it a relatively quieter earthquake, more than 600 people succumbed to the devastation caused by it.&nbsp;

Most of the victims were killed when buildings collapsed or when the landslides were triggered.&nbsp;

"If someone dies, residents in Cianjur often immediately bury them. Because of the panicked situation, those who died were immediately buried by relatives without notifying the local health agency," said&nbsp;Cianjur local administration spokesman Adam who added,&nbsp;"It was later revealed that around 600 people died, when it is officially counted."

An earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale jolted the Tanimbar region in Indonesia on Tuesday, according to European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC). The earthquake was at a depth of 95 kilometres below the earth's surface, said EMCS. The aftershocks of magnitude 5.5 were recorded, according to Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). There were no reports of damage or victims but the tremors were felt on the island of Papua, Timor, Maluku archipelago as well as Darwin, capital of Australia's Northern Territory. An initial Tsunami warning was generated by the Indonesian geophysics agency which was later taken back. This is not the first time that the Tanimbar islands have endured such an earthquake. Previously, an earthquake measuring 7.3 struck the island in June 2019. However, at the time, no Tsunami warning was issued. Indonesia, owning to its geographical position in the highly seismic 'Ring of Fire' - an area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean is highly susceptible to earthquakes. In November last year, a shallow 5.6 magnitude earthquake rocked the town of Cianjur in Indonesia's West Java. Despite experts terming it a relatively quieter earthquake, more than 600 people succumbed to the devastation caused by it. The Indonesian government on Friday (December 30) issued an emergency regulation to replace the controversial Jobs Creation Law that was passed two years back. The regulation has been criticised by some legal experts who said it is an attempt by the government to bypass proper debate in Parliament.&nbsp;Addressing a press conference on Friday, President Joko Widodo said, "We know it looks like we're normal now, but global uncertainty, risk is haunting us ... Actually the world is not doing fine."

Widodo argued that Indonesia's economy would rely on investments and exports next year and that legal certainty about the law was crucial to maintain good investor perception,&nbsp; reports news agency Reuters.&nbsp;

Indonesia's chief economic minister Airlangga Hartarto, meanwhile, said the main consideration to issue the emergency regulation was a global recession risk next year, the war in Ukraine, climate change and the potential for a worldwide food, energy and monetary crisis.&nbsp;

The Jobs Creation Law had revised over 70 other laws and was praised by foreign investors for streamlining rules in Indonesia. However, the legislation also lead to nationwide protests from workers, students and green groups who said it eroded labour and environmental protections, Reuters reported.&nbsp;

In 2021, the constitutional court ruled that the passage of the Jobs Creation Law was flawed because of inadequate public consultation. The court ordered lawmakers to restart the process within two years. The law would otherwise be deemed unconstitutional.

One of the biggest controversies in the law included relaxed rules on severance pay, contract labour and outsourcing, and changes to the minimum wage formula.&nbsp;

Bivitri Susanti, a constitutional law expert from the Indonesia Jentera School of Law, said the emergency regulation is a "fait accompli'' from President Widodo.&nbsp;

"Everyone can see there is no emergency. It's holiday time," Susanti said and pointed out the move is "ridiculous" and ''inappropriate'' as it would reduce debate time in Parliament.&nbsp;
