Indonesia: Flash floods claim at least 19 lives, seven missing in Sumatra region

Indonesia's Sumatra island faced tragedy as torrential rains triggered flash floods and a landslide, claiming at least 10 lives and leaving 10 individuals missing, according to officials on Saturday (March 9).

Late Friday, a torrent of mud, rocks, and uprooted trees cascaded down a mountain, reaching a river that overflowed and surged through villages in the Pesisir Selatan district of West Sumatra province, as reported by Doni Yusrizal, the head of the local disaster management agency.

Rescuers recovered seven bodies in the severely impacted village of Koto XI Tarusan, along with two others in neighbouring villages, stated National Disaster Management Agency spokesperson Yusrizal. The search continues for the 10 still missing.

Yusrizal mentioned that 46,000 people sought refuge in a temporary government shelter after the flood and landslide buried 14 houses, with an additional 20,000 houses flooded up to the roof.

"Relief efforts for the dead and missing were hampered by power outages, blocked roads covered in thick mud and debris," Yusrizal explained.

India-Indonesia sign MoU, boosting trade & investment for both countries

In a move towards strengthening economic integration, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Bank Indonesia (BI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Thursday, to establish a framework promoting the use of local currencies for cross-border transactions.

As per a press release by the Indian Embassy in Jakarta, the MoU, inked during the visit of a high-level delegation from BI to Mumbai, aims to enhance business ties between India and Indonesia by facilitating transactions in Indian Rupees (INR) and Indonesian Rupiahs (IDR).

The framework, the second of its kind for India with a foreign country after the UAE, encourages the use of INR and IDR in current account transactions, permissible capital account transactions, and other economic and financial dealings as agreed upon by both nations.

With bilateral trade between India and Indonesia reaching USD 40 billion in 2022, the MoU is expected to streamline trade processes, reduce settlement time and costs, and minimise foreign exchange volatility for exporters and importers.

The MoU lays the groundwork for more profound financial market integration, including opening the door for future payment system linkages.

This closer cooperation is set to benefit professionals working in each other's countries, fostering an environment conducive to financial growth.

Additionally, it holds promise for about half a million Indian tourists who visit Indonesia annually.

Indonesians call for outgoing President's impeachment

Congratulatory messages are pouring in for former General Prabowo Subianto who is said to be Indonesia's next leader. Let's take a look at the political career of the president-elect.

Indonesia: World leaders congratulate Prabowo Subianto

Indonesia's Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto is set to become the country's next president after winning the election in what was his third crack at the top position.

Indonesia's Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto is set to become the country's next president after winning the election in what was his third crack at the top position. Subianto secured more than 58 per cent of the votes in the first round, effectively shutting doors on a run-off. The much-feared former army general, who is also the former son-in-law of late strongman leader Suharto, said in a 'victory speech' that he is “grateful” the election was held peacefully and for the quick count results. He vowed to create a government consisting of "the best Indonesians" and said it was a victory for all Indonesian people. Who is Subianto? Subianto was born into a super-wealthy family but spent the majority of his formative years in exile. His father, regarded as one of the most celebrated economists of the island nation, was forced to flee after he opposed Sukarno, the country's first president. Having shifted between Britain, Singapore and Switzerland, Subianto returned to Indonesia in 1970 and joined the army, where he rose to be part of command Kopassus - the country's elite special forces. He married the daughter of Suharto in 1983 which helped him quickly build his wealth and connections. However, as Suharto's empire began crumbling, Subianto became involved in clandestine operations to defend his father-in-law's army-backed and repressive New Order regime against critics. Subianto has been accused of carrying out human rights abuses in this period. According to reports, under his leadership, more than 20 student protesters were tortured, 13 of whom still remain missing. He has admitted to the abductions but denies being involved in any killings. Despite his sketchy and blood-stained past, Subianto managed to win elections in the world’s third-largest democracy. Watch | Indonesia Elections 2024: Indonesians cast ballots in the world's biggest single-day polls × How did Subianto secure the win? Having fallen short against the incumbent President Joko Widodo, also referred to as Jokowi, in 2014 and 2019 - Subianto took the field this time with the former's son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, an equally controversial candidate, as his running mate. After the failed attempts in the past, Subianto rebranded himself - transforming his image from a fiery-tempered nationalist and military hardman to a cuddly grandfather figure with awkward dance moves. This image makeover was done through 3D cartoons and TikTok videos. In the process, he cultivated a huge following amongst the youth of the country on social media. Notably, a little more than half of Indonesian voters are under 40, with the majority not having knowledge of Subianto's dark past. The ByteDance-owned app has a user base of over 125 million in Indonesia and has turned into the second-most used application for Indonesians, after television, which they rely on for information related to politics. Apart from TikTok, Subianto did not shy away from using artificial intelligence to further bridge the gap between him and the voters. During the canvassing trail, his chubby-cheeked AI-generated cartoon avatar made Korean-style finger hearts and cradled his beloved cat, Bobby, to the delight of Gen Z voters. An amalgamation of a careful PR campaign and the covert backing of Widodo ensured that the third time was the charm for Subianto. (With inputs from agencies)

Candidates for Indonesia presidential election 2024 use Tiktok to woo voters

In a digital resurrection that's both eerie and captivating, an unexpected political figure, one who ruled Indonesia with an iron fist, has emerged ahead of the upcoming elections.

A video of the late Suharto, Indonesia's once-feared army general and long-standing president who ruled over the nation for over three decades, went viral on social media, with 4.7 million views on X.

A deepfake

In a three-minute video circulating on various online platforms, including X, TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube, a stern-faced Suharto tells voters: "I am President Suharto, the second president of Indonesia, inviting you to elect representatives of the people from Golkar."

Pretty convincing on first look, the video upon closer inspection, becomes evident as a deepfake.

As per CNN, the real Suharto was known for his perpetual grin that despite his authoritarian governance earned him the affectionate nickname "Smiling General". He passed away in 2008 at the age of 86.

Erwin Aksa, deputy chairman of Golkar, one of Indonesia's prominent political parties, shared the video with the message that when translated to English reads: "The hopes and struggles of the Indonesian people will never be extinguished, they will always be realised in every generation. Indonesia's dreams will always come true. On February 14, 2024, we will determine the fate of the Indonesian nation. We must elect the right people's representatives and leaders for Indonesia, for all Indonesian people."

"This video was made using AI technology to remind us how important our votes are in general elections, which will determine the future so that the hopes of the Indonesian people are realised and prosperous."

As per the report, Golkar is not fielding its own presidential candidate. However, the party is rallying behind Prabowo Subianto, a former general under Suharto's regime and his erstwhile son-in-law. By resurrecting Suharto's image, Golkar purportedly sought to leverage nostalgia and association to sway voters towards its cause.

While some view this as a strategic move to honour Suharto's legacy, others have condemned it as a manipulation of the electorate.

A deepfake In a three-minute video circulating on various online platforms, including X, TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube, a stern-faced Suharto tells voters: "I am President Suharto, the second president of Indonesia, inviting you to elect representatives of the people from Golkar." Pretty convincing on first look, the video upon closer inspection, becomes evident as a deepfake. We must elect the right people's representatives and leaders for Indonesia, for all Indonesian people." Indonesia set to go to polls on February 14, candidates hold final campaign rallies

Thanks to humans, more than one fifth of the "magnificent" migratory species on Earth are facing an extinction threat. As per a landmark, United Nations report released on Monday (Feb 12), migratory species across the globe are under threat.

A wake up call

The first-ever State of the World's Migratory Species assessment by the UN Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), found that one in five species is threatened with extinction.

The report focused on the 1,189 species covered by a 1979 UN convention to protect migratory animals. It found that about 44 per cent of them are also witnessing their populations decline. Additionally, about 22 per cent could vanish altogether.

As per the report findings, 70 CMS-listed species have become more endangered. This includes the steppe eagle, Egyptian vulture, and the wild camel.

In a conversation with AFP, CMS chief Amy Fraenkel said that they "are finding out the phenomenon of migration itself is under threat."

The report should be a "wake up call about what's happening," she added.

These numbers are based on assessments and data provided by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as well as the Living Planet Index.

Who's behind this?

As per the report, humans are to blame. Our species activities like destruction or breaking of habitats, hunting, fishing, plastic pollution, overuse of chemicals and light, noise pollution pose the biggest threat — impacting 70 per cent of the species on the UN list. Up to 75 per cent of the species are affected by habitat loss.

Furthermore, climate change also messes up migration routes and timings by altering seasonal conditions.

The report has been released ahead of a conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan from February 12 to 17 for the Fourteenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (COP14). There, 130 signatory countries — with the notable absence of the United States, China, Canada, and Russia will meet for their once every three years meet to review new species to add to its watchlist. Among the animals being considered at this week's meeting will be the giant Amazon catfish.

The constitution prohibits Joko Widodo, popularly known as Jokowi, the current president, from seeking re-election a third time.

Just days before one of the largest one-day elections in history, over 100,000 people flocked to a Jakarta stadium on Saturday for a massive demonstration in support of Prabowo Subianto, the front-runner in the country's presidential election.

Supporters flocked in their tens of thousands to witness the closing rallies of his rivals in the race to head the sizeable country with a majority of Muslims, Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo.

Prior to Wednesday's election, polls show that incumbent defence minister Subianto, a three-time contender, is ahead of Pranowo and Baswedan by a significant margin.

Supporters praised his tenacity in running a third time for the presidency.

The national stadium's audience applauded as 72-year-old Subianto began his typically vehement speech.

He declared, "We will struggle to deliver prosperity to all Indonesians. We shall carry on the work that other presidents started."

Subianto's campaign has been synonymous with an AI cartoon representation of his face, which is displayed on some of the blue shirts worn by his supporters.

During his campaign trail, Subianto promised to end severe poverty, give pregnant women and children free milk and school meals, and carry on President Joko Widodo's development initiatives.

Crowds of automobiles and scooters en route to the rallies stopped traffic in the capital.

An AFP journalist there reported that the north Jakarta stadium where Baswedan spoke to the crowd was so crowded that a number of individuals passed out. Many had spent the night camping in preparation for the occasion.

On Saturday, Pranowo was hosting two events in the province of Central Java, which he used to lead, in the towns of Semarang and Surakarta.

On February 14, more than 204 million Indonesians will cast ballots to select thousands of local authorities, lawmakers, and the country's next president.

Voting will take place at over 800,000 voting places located throughout the archipelago studded with volcanoes.

The candidates will hold three low-key campaign days leading up to the election following their rallies on Saturday.
