Indonesia flood death toll rises to 57; authorities search for 22 missing

The death toll from flash floods and the cold lava flow from a volcano in Western Indonesia over the weekend, has risen to 50 with 27 more missing. The floods swept away people and submerged hundreds of houses and buildings, while forcing more than 3,100 to flee to temporary government shelters.

Indonesia Floods: 50 killed in West Sumatra, 27 missing

At least 37 people, including several children, have been killed and more than a dozen others are missing after heavy rains triggered floods and landslides in Indonesia’s province of West Sumatra, reported news agency AFP citing a local disaster official on Sunday (May 12).

What happened?

Two districts, Agam and Tanah Datar, in West Sumatra province were hit by a flash flood and a cold lava flow from Mount Marapi at around 10:30 pm (local time) after hours of heavy rains on Saturday (May 11), said Basarnas search and rescue agency, in a statement on Sunday.

The rains also sent sweeping ash and large rocks down Mount Marapi, the most active volcano on the archipelago’s Sumatra island.

“Until now our data shows that 37 people died: 16 in Agam and 18 in Tanah Datar. At least 18 others are injured. We are also still searching for 16 other people,” West Sumatra disaster agency spokesman Ilham Wahab told AFP.

He also said search and rescue efforts involved local rescuers, police, soldiers and volunteers.

Search and rescue efforts

Earlier, on Sunday, nine bodies were identified, including that of a three-year-old and an eight-year-old, said the head of the local rescue agency Abdul Malik said in a statement.

He added, “Today, we will continue the search in the two districts.” Images and videos on social media show large rocks and thick mud covering the streets of West Sumatra.

Malaysia plans to introduce “orangutan diplomacy” for countries that buy its palm oil, including India, as it hopes to ease criticism of deforestation linked to its multibillion-dollar industry and as a part of a diplomatic strategy.

What is ‘orangutan diplomacy’?

Malaysia’s Plantations and Commodities Minister Johari Abdul Ghani said that the country hopes to generate the same goodwill as China has with its “panda diplomacy” over the years by offering orangutans as gifts to its major trading partners.

The plan, which has already sparked criticism from conservation groups, comes after the European Union last year approved an import ban on commodities linked to deforestation, which could impact Malaysia.

Notably, Malaysia is the world’s second-largest producer of palm oil which is used in everything from chocolate to lipstick. However, the multibillion-dollar industry has also been attributed as the cause of the shrinking of the natural rainforests where the large apes live.

Ghani said Malaysia would offer orangutans as gifts to trading partners, particularly major importers such as the EU, India and China, as part of a diplomatic strategy.

“This will prove to the global community that Malaysia is committed to biodiversity conservation,” said the minister, in a statement, on X.

He added, “Malaysia cannot take a defensive approach to the issue of palm oil. Instead we need to show the countries of the world that Malaysia is a sustainable palm oil producer and is committed to protecting forests and environmental sustainability.”

Criticism from conservationists

While there were no further details about the plan or its implementation, the conservation group World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) told Reuters that orangutans – which means “man of the forest” in Malay – are critically endangered, with a population of less than 105,000 on the island of Borneo.

The large apes only live on the island of Borneo, which is shared between Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia, and the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List had previously estimated that the population of orangutans in Borneo will decline to about 47,000 by next year as a result of human pressures and loss of habitat.

“WWF supports in-situ conservation of wildlife, and would urge that trading partners are brought to Malaysia to support this initiative, as opposed to sending orangutans out of the country,” said the group in a statement to Reuters.

Advocacy group Justice for Wildlife Malaysia, as per the news agency, said that the government should consider alternative diplomatic measures, as its plan for “orangutan diplomacy” would require research about the potential impact and feasibility against other conservation efforts.

An orangutan named Rakus knows self-medication as scientists have observed him applying medicinal herbs to a face wound. The observation was apparently a successful attempt to heal an injury. This happened after the researchers heard a fight between male orangutans in the treetops of a rainforest in Sumatra, Indonesia.

Rakus was tracked by the scientists at the Gunung Leuser National Park in Indonesia's Aceh province. When they checked the region, they found him three days later and noticed an open wound on his face.

In a surprising moment, they spotted Rakus showing high intelligence levels as he was trying to heal a pink wound below his right eyelid.

He was spotted chewing the leaves of a vine called Fibraurea tinctoria, which is known for its medicinal properties. It has long been used in local traditional medicine.

The findings were published in the journal Nature Scientific Reports on Thursday (May 2). It mentioned that the apparent treatment, which was seen by researchers in Indonesia in 2022, is the first time a wild animal has been seen applying medicinal plants to a wound.

The study by Indonesian and German scientists noted that the orangutan "began chewing the leaves without swallowing them and using his fingers to apply the plant juice from his mouth directly onto his facial wound".

Not just that, Rakus "smeared the entire wound with the plant pulp until the red flesh was fully covered with the green leaf material" when flies started to land on it.

The researcher observed Rakus the next day as he was seen eating the vine's leaves again. The study mentioned that his wound had closed up around a week later and healed without any sign of infection.

"This study is the first systematic documentation of the putative active wound treatment with a biologically active plant substance in great apes and other non-human species," a discussion of the story mentioned.

"The flanged male orangutan Rakus was observed to selectively detach, chew, and repeatedly apply the chewed leave juice directly on his three-day-old facial wound for several minutes and covered the entire wound with a chewed-up leaf mash," the study added.

The finding is an addition to a growing body of information concerning how monkeys use plants to stay healthy.

The volcanic eruptions forced Indonesia to evacuate people from nearby places and also close Sam Ratulangi International Airport in the provincial capital of Manado, as per a notice issued by state-run air traffic control provider AirNav Indonesia. In the notice, the airport said that it was shutting down because of "Ruang volcanic ash". Indonesia's Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) raised the alert level to the highest after the volcanic eruption and appealed to the residents to avoid going near the volcano, as per the website. The island of Ruang, which is located in the province of North Sulawesi, is home to more than 800 residents, a lot of whom were evacuated after the volcanic eruptions earlier this month. Mount Ruang's eruption leads to a tower of ash The eruption in Mount Ruang, which is located in Indonesia's outermost region of North Sulawesi province, took place at around 01:15 am local time (1715 GMT Monday) and twice more Tuesday morning, said the volcanology agency, in a statement. It added that the volcano created a tower of ash that stretched over five kilometres (3.1 miles) in the sky. A six-kilometre (3.7-mile) exclusion zone was also re-instated by the agency which said that the locals should be aware of "the potential for ejections of incandescent rocks, hot clouds and tsunamis due to eruption material entering the sea". Watch: Indonesia battered by volcanic eruptions, at least 800 evacuated after eruption This month, more than 800 people were living near Ruang and faced evacuation. Some of them came back to their homes after the end of the emergency response status, reported AFP. It remained unclear how many residents came back and were once again forced to evacuate. Nearly 800 individuals have been evacuated because of the eruption of the Ruang volcano, located on the Sangihe Islands in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. It's part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is known for its frequent volcanic eruptions and seismic activity.

The eruptions at the Ruang volcano occurred multiple times since Tuesday (Apr 16). As the magma rose to the surface and erupted, it produced various volcanic materials, including lava flows and ash clouds. The delicate situation prompted the authorities to elevate the alert level to the second highest.

Heruningtyas Desi Purnamasari from Indonesia's Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) reportedly told Reuters that recent earthquakes on the island triggered the eruptions. This resulted in the emission of dangerous "explosive hot clouds" reaching heights of 1.8 km.

"We must clear the island because we anticipate there could be more eruptions. No activity is allowed within four kilometres from the crater," Purnamasari said.

This geological phenomenon is due to the movement and interaction of several tectonic plates beneath the Earth's surface. Indonesia sits at the convergence of several of these tectonic plates, including the Pacific Plate, the Indo-Australian Plate, and the Eurasian Plate, which are constantly in motion. The collision and subduction of these plates create volcanic activities.

Extremely stealthy and fast, it has a level of operating automation that allows for a limited crew, which reduces its operating costs significantly. Its combat edge is highlighted by the fact that it has 6 weapon launching tubes, and 18 weapons (torpedoes, missiles).

Xi Jinping meets with Indonesian President-elect Prabowo Subianto in Beijing

Indonesia's president-elect Prabowo Subianto visited Beijing on Monday on his first foreign trip since his election, and was quoted by Chinese state media as telling President Xi Jinping that he aimed to continue the close ties under his predecessor Joko Widodo.

Prabowo "fully supports the development of closer Indonesia-China relations and wishes to continue President Joko's policy of friendship with China," China's CCTV quoted Prabowo as saying.

The new Indonesian government will promote the alignment of development strategies between the two countries and push for more results in cooperation in fields such as the economy, trade and poverty alleviation, he said.

Xi described Prabowo as an "old friend of the Chinese people", and said China views its relations with Indonesia from a strategic and long-term perspective, standing ready to deepen all-round strategic cooperation.

Prabowo, 72, was elected in February but will not be sworn in until October. A long-time rival of the outgoing leader popularly known as Jokowi, he is now widely seen as enjoying his predecessor's strong support, winning his decisive victory with Jokowi's son as his vice presidential running-mate.

"The key to the valuable achievements of China-Indonesia relations lies in adherence to strategic autonomy, mutual trust and mutual assistance," CCTV quoted Xi as saying in the meeting.

Prabowo's decision to visit China ahead of Indonesia's neighbours in the region underlines the close partnership built up in the past decade under Jokowi, when China became Indonesia's top trading partner, supplying natural resources including nickel and coal.

Jokowi's first visit after his inauguration was to China, for an annual summit of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders in 2014. That was followed by six more visits.

China has also ploughed billions into Indonesian infrastructure and industrial projects, including the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway.

It remains to be seen how Prabowo, now Indonesia's defence minister, will navigate issues including the jostling for influence between China and the United States in Southeast Asia.

Prabowo has previously said Indonesia was committed to its policy of non-alignment and would keep good ties with both China and the United States.

China's expansive claims in the South China Sea may present a test for his leadership, although the two countries' overlapping claims there have not become a vociferous dispute as has unfolded in recent months between China and the Philippines.

Indonesia says the southern end of the South China Sea is part of its exclusive economic zone. China says the area is within its own territorial claim, marked by a U-shaped "nine-dash line" rejected by other regional states.

China is willing to continue to deepen maritime cooperation with Indonesia, Xi told Prabowo on Monday.

Indonesian firefighters were battling to put out a massive fire that broke out on Saturday at a military ammunition depot just outside the capital, causing a series of explosions and sending flames and smoke into the night sky.

No one was reported to have died or been injured in the incident, military official Mohammad Hasan told reporters at the scene, saying the fire had started in a part of the facility that was used to store expired ammunition.
