Hundreds of Indian students have been on a sit-in protest in Canada’s Brampton city since last week against possible deportation due to fake admission letters.

At least 700 students, mostly from India’s northwestern Punjab state, fear being kicked out of the country after the Canadian authorities found their "admission offer letters" to educational institutions were fake.

The matter came to light in March when these students applied for permanent residency in Canada.

Since May 29, several Indian students have been on an "indefinite sit-in" protest at Airport Road of Mississauga, outside the head office of the Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA).

Responding to the situation, Indian foreign minister Jaishnkar hoped that the Canadian authorities find a solution, arguing that the protesting students were done wrong by a fake travel agent.

<h2>Students tricked by travel agency</h2>

According to a report by the Hindustan Times newspaper, these Indian students arrived in Canada between 2017 and 2019 and a few in 2020.

The students had received notices from the CBSA in 2021 and last year after the agency found the letters of offer of admission to a Canadian higher education institution to be "fake".

These fake documents were issued by a Jalandhar-based travel agent who had charged more than Rs 1.6 million ($19,300) per student, PTI reported.

I shall be highly grateful if you again look into the matter personally and take up the matter with concerned agencies including the High Commission of Canada and the government of Canada so that these students can be saved from being deported," reads a letter from Dhaliwal to Jaishankar.

On Thursday, Jaishankar responded to the crisis during a press briefing. He said, "Unfair to punish the students who acted in good faith. It is the culpable who should be held accountable."

"Canadians also accept that it would be unfair if a student has done no wrong. If a student has done no wrong then they accept that they have to find a solution. I hope the Canadian system is fair&nbsp;in&nbsp;this&nbsp;regard."

<h2>Canadian ministers show support</h2>

On Tuesday, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown joined the protesting students and extended his support to them.

Citing Home Office officials, the publication said that Indians, most of them students, are utilising a loophole that lets asylum seekers study on domestic fee as opposed to the international fee that is higher.&nbsp;

Authorities say that around 250 Indian migrants have arrived in the UK since January 1. The number is nearly one fifth of the total migrants to have crossed the Channel on small boats, which stands at 1,180 so far this year.

UK officials fear that the trend might catch on and several more Indian students might start entering the country on small boats. Last year, 233 Indian migrants had&nbsp;crossed the Channel in the first nine months.&nbsp;

Officials trying to understand the reason behind it believe that Serbia's visa-free travel rules for Indians might be providing the students with a gateway. As per an earlier provision, all Indians with a valid passport were able to enter Serbia without a visa for up to 30 days. However, the provision ended on January 1, and Home Office officials believe that many such Indians might have started moving towards the EU and ultimately into the UK.

Others believe that students might be using this method to enter UK since applying for a student visa was much costlier. Pursuing an undergraduate degree in the UK costs an Indian citizen £363 ($444) for a student visa, about £940 ($1,149) for the immigration health surcharge and an average of about £22,000 ($26,889) a year in international student fees.

When compared to the domestic fees, that asylum seekers are required to pay while their application is being processed, stands frozen at £9,250 ($11,306). The person responsible for smuggling people into the country normally charges an average of £3,500 ($4,288).

Data suggests that only four per cent of Indian asylum applications are granted, leaving the rest at risk of being deported. Indians account for the largest number of migrants to overstay their visas in the UK.

"Embassy of India in Beijing has been receiving several queries from prospective Indian students and their parents with respect to seeking admission for undergraduate clinical medicine programme in China," the embassy said in a statement on September 8.

The embassy cited a study conducted by India’s National&nbsp;Board of Examination to point out that only 16 per cent of 40,417 students who appeared in the FMG Examination—a licensure examination for Indian students studying medicine in foreign universities—from 2015 to 2021 have cleared it.

"The study shows that only 6387 out of 40,417 students, who appeared in FMG Examination from 2015 to 2021 have cleared it. Here, the pass percentage of Indian students who have studied clinical medicine programme in&nbsp;China&nbsp;in that period in these 45 universities was only 16 per cent," the statement further added.

An estimated 23,000 Indian students are currently enrolled in various Chinese universities. A vast majority of them are medical students.

In the last few weeks, students from Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Russia and other countries have started returning to China on chartered flights. Beijing is reportedly reviewing the Indian student lists.

The advisory listed 45 medical colleges designated by the Chinese government to provide medical degrees in five-year duration plus a one-year internship. Indian students are advised not to seek admission other than those 45 colleges.

The statement said that the Chinese government has “clearly mentioned in their official communication that foreign students can only join medical programmes in 45 universities in English language".

Moreover, the Indian students interested in taking a medical qualification from China are required to clear India’s National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) exam, which is the entry examination for undergraduate medical education in India, as a prerequisite to pursue medical education abroad, the advisory said.

“Only those students who clear the NEET-UG for admission to undergraduate medical education in India will be eligible to appear for the screening test, namely, the Foreign Medical Graduates Exam (FMGE)," it said.

Indian students race past China, bag more UK visas than any other country

China has decided to issue visas for Indian students after keeping them away for more than two years due to the country’s tough COVID-19 restrictions. According to official data, around 23,000 Indian students will be returning to China for the first time since the pandemic started in order to resume their studies. China relaxes visa ban on Indian students after over two years

One syringe was used to administer the Covid-19 jab to more than 30 students in Indian state of Madhya Pradesh's Sagar district, flagrantly violating the "one needle, one syringe, only once" standard. On Wednesday, a vaccination camp for pupils was held at Jain Public School, and an aspiring nurse was sent to administer the shots.

The nursing student's father saw that she wasn't changing syringes while the immunisation was taking place and raised an alert.

The nursing student defended himself by saying that he only needed one syringe to administer vaccinations to all of the classmates.

"I did what I was asked to do. The person who delivered the materials (vaccines and other kits) gave single syringe," said the nursing student.

Parents of every student who received a vaccination during the camp urged that the guilty be brought to justice.

A First Information Report (FIR) was filed for negligence and breaking the "one needle, one syringe, only once" guarantee of the Central Government.

The District Immunisation Officer, Dr. Rakesh Roshan, who was in charge of dispatching the vaccination team, was the subject of an investigation.

"We have also informed the health department of the state government. Meanwhile, we have started taking samples of all students who were given vaccinated at the camp. Strict action would be taken against whoever will be found responsible of violating norms," said a district medical officer.

Indian students win NASA Human Exploration rover challenge

On Saturday, five Indian students, all in their twenties, were killed in a car accident on a highway in the province of Ontario.

At 3.45 am local time, all five were riding in a passenger van on Highway 401 when it collided with a tractor-trailer. 
 
According to the Ontario Provincial Police, five students were killed in the terrible incident, while two others were taken to the hospital with critical injuries (OPP).

According to the Canadian Press, the five were identified as Harpreet Singh, 24, Jaspinder Singh, 21, Karanpal Singh, 22, Mohit Chouhan, 23, and Pawan Kumar, 23. They were in Montreal and the Greater Toronto Area for their studies. At the scene of the accident, they were pronounced deceased. Harpreet Singh is thought to be the perpetrator.

Harpreet Singh is believed to have been resident in Montreal, according to the outlet CBC News.

"On Saturday March 12, 2022, at approximately 3:45am officers from the Quinte West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 401 westbound, between Aikens Road and St Hilaire Road," the release stated.&nbsp;

It added, "The investigation into this collision is continuing at this time and updates will be provided as they become available. No charges have been laid."

Five Indian students killed in Canada road accident

As the war between Russia and Ukraine triggers mass exodus, foreign students, especially Indians and Africans, attempting to cross over to Poland have claimed that they are facing racial abuse by the Ukrainian security forces at the border.

Several videos have emerged on social media purportedly showing people of African and Indian origin being blocked from boarding trains or being left stranded at Ukrainian stations.

Both BBC and CNN have also reported that foreign students are being subjected to racial segregation at border checkpoints.

One African medical student told CNN that she and other foreigners were ordered off the public transit bus at a checkpoint between Ukraine and Poland border.

Amid the ongoing Russia and Ukraine conflict, an Indian student has been hospitalised after he was shot in the capital city of Ukraine.&nbsp;

The student has been identified as&nbsp;Harjot Singh, who said as quoted by ANI: "No support from the Indian embassy yet. I have been trying to get in touch with them, every day they say we will do something but no help yet."&nbsp;

While responding to his video, India's ministry of external affairs noted that the government of India "will be bearing expenses for Harjot Singh's medical treatment" (in Kyiv, Ukraine).

"We are trying to ascertain his medical status... Our embassy is trying to get an update on his health status...trying to reach out but facing trouble as it's a conflict zone," the ministry added.&nbsp;

A few days ago, an Indian student lost his life as the&nbsp;situation continues to escalate after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered "military operations" in Ukraine.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Indian government has been evacuating its citizen from war-torn Ukraine.&nbsp;

Minister of State (MoS) for Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) General VK Singh revealed the information to ANI at Poland's Rzeszow airport on Thursday (March 3).&nbsp;

"A student from Kyiv was reported to have been shot and was immediately admitted to the hospital in Kyiv," General (retd) Singh said.&nbsp;

"The Indian embassy had earlier cleared on the priority that everyone should leave Kyiv. In the event of war, the gun bullet does not look at anyone's religion and nationality," he added.&nbsp;

Russia-Ukraine conflict: Indian student shot in Kyiv, hospitalised - Video

On Thursday, India rejected reports that Indian students trapped in war-torn Ukraine were kidnapped and used as human shields by Ukrainian forces.

In response to media inquiries about Indian students being held hostage in Ukraine, Arindam Bagchi, the official spokesperson, said: "Our Embassy in Ukraine is in continuous touch with Indian nationals in Ukraine. We note that with the cooperation of the Ukrainian authorities, many students left Kharkiv yesterday. We have not received any reports of any hostage situation involving any student. We have requested the support of the Ukrainian authorities in arranging special trains to take out students from Kharkiv and neighbouring areas to the western part of the country."

Russia on Wednesday made a huge claim that some Indian students in Kharkov (Kharkiv) were being held hostage by Ukrainian forces. The Russian side also said that these students were being used as human shields and that Russia was trying to organise 'urgent evacuation' of this group of students.

The Russian side released this information in a readout given out after telephone conversation between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

As per the readout, Putin has given all necessary instructions to ensure safe evacuation of Indian citizens from the war zone.

A girl from Haryana, who is studying medicine in Ukraine, has refused to leave the war-torn country even though she got an opportunity to get evacuated.

Neha decided to stay back in order to support the children and wife of the house owner who voluntarily joined the Ukrainian Army to fight in the ongoing war against Russia.

Savita Jakhar, a close friend of Neha's mother, made a Facebook post to express her concern for Neha. The post was picked up by many news outlets.

"My friend pulled out all stops trying to contact the embassy to rescue her from there, but the kid doesn't want to leave the children and their mother alone," she said on Facebook.

When scores of Indian students landed in the Romanian capital, Bucharest, a sigh of relief was witnessed after having escaped Ukraine, which has been facing the mighty Russian forces.

On Saturday morning, a special Air India flight landed in the capital city for the evacuation of stranded Indians.

They will soon be taken to their destinations—Mumbai—as the government arranges more flights for the evacuation.

Before leaving, the students praised the Indian missions in Ukraine and Romania for helping them reach home safely.

"We were escorted to the Romanian border a day after Ukraine came under attack. We left Chernivtsi early in the morning. We would like to thank the Indian embassies in Ukraine and Romania and the Indian government for taking care of us, "said Suksham, a 3rd-year&nbsp;student from Bukovinian State Medical University.

Another student said that they were evacuated with full security and were provided with food and water.

"The Indian embassies in Ukraine and Romania evacuated us safely, and now, thanks to them, we will be going back to our home in India." The moment we arrived in Romania, the Indian embassy took care of everything. We didn’t face any difficulty while travelling. We are grateful to every staff member for evacuating us. Our parents are relieved now that we are coming back home, "she said.

Echoing similar sentiments, another student said, "We thank the Indian government and the embassies for arranging flights for us."

The Indian government will dispatch more Air India flights to Bucharest and the Hungarian capital, Budapest, on Saturday and Sunday to evacuate Indians stranded in Ukraine.

The threat of war looms large over Ukraine. With more than 100,000 Russian troops deployed near its neighbour’s borders, the Ukrainians are preparing for the worst-case scenario.

As tensions between Russia and Ukraine reach a boiling point, world leaders and diplomats shuffle among Washington, Moscow and Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, to avert a war, which many fear would be catastrophic.

The same has been running around the minds of Indian students who are living in Ukraine.

There are around 20,000 Indian students studying medical and engineering in the east European country.

Indians form the biggest student group in Ukraine. Most of them come here to study medicine.

There are two reasons for that. One, it is affordable. Medical education here is cheaper than in India.

And two, the degrees that they get are recognised both in Europe and in India, so students come here in large numbers.

WION&nbsp;visited the country’s prestigious varsity, Taras Shevchenko National University, in Kyiv to talk to students and understand their life under the spectre of conflict.

As war brews on the border, a sense of worry is palpable in the dormitory. On the face of it, life looks normal on the campus, but the threat of war has been weighing on the mind of these students.

“There are things that are happening overnight. All we are doing is waiting for the updates,” said Shashank, a student at Taras Shevchenko National University.

Expressing similar views, another student says, “I have been here for three years and there has always been a talk of war. But this time it is more serious than before. Let’s see, the US, India are doing things. I don’t think there should be a war. But it is slightly unpredictable.”

These students are not only concerned for their safety, but they also worry about their Ukrainian friends.

“If war happens, we can always go back and create our life in India. We have the option to make our future brighter. Many of us come from a middle-class background, and if anything (war) happens, it will massively impact us. But we still can go back. Whereas, I worry for my Ukrainian friends. I feel that they might lose their independence,” said Madhu Mohan, a fourth-year MBBS student at Taras Shevchenko National University.

Students are banking on the Indian embassy in Kyiv,&nbsp;as they&nbsp;have been evacuated once before. At the beginning of the pandemic, hundreds of students were flown to India through the Vande Bharat mission.

Around two weeks back, the Indian embassy in Kyiv drew up a list, asking the students to fill up forms to collate their information in case they need&nbsp;to be evacuated if a war breaks out.

They say that if any conflict arises, New Delhi will ensure their safety.

&nbsp;“We think we are in safe hands because we are in constant touch with the (Indian) embassy. If there is any kind of evacuation, the embassy is going to take measures accordingly,” said Shashank.

Most of the classes have been going online because of the pandemic. Some students have gone back home while some stayed.

Visiting Australian Trade Minister Dan Tehan has said that his country is "warmly looking forward" to welcoming back Indian students to the country as Canberra gives a nod to Covishield for international travellers. The development comes even as Australia is all set to reopen its borders in November after months of closure amid the pandemic.&nbsp;

Tehan, speaking to reporters in New Delhi, said the Australian side giving the go-ahead for Covishield, "means the pathway for our Indian international students to return to Australia is there again.&nbsp; 
 
With semester one starting in February/March next year, those international students will be able to start returning towards the end of this year and towards the beginning of next year. Can I say to all those Indian students that we are warmly looking forward to welcoming them back to Australia? We can't wait. It's terrific news."&nbsp;

Australia's department of health's Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has declared the Covishield (AstraZeneca/Serum Institute of India) vaccine as a ‘recognised vaccine' for purposes of travel into Australia.

TGA, in its initial assessment of the data on the protection offered by the Indian-made vaccine, advised it for travel purposes, along with China's Coronavac (Sinovac). The TGA is responsible for regulating the supply, import, export, manufacturing, and advertising of therapeutic goods in the country.&nbsp;

The number of Indian students currently enrolled in studying in Australia is around 90,000. The number of Indian students going to the country continues to grow, and this forms an important people-to-people linkage between the two countries. People who have received vaccines not recognised by the TGA, or who are unvaccinated, will be required to undertake 14 days of managed quarantine on arrival.&nbsp;

The problems faced by Indian students were raised by the Indian external affairs minister with his Australian counterpart, Minister Payne, during the 2+2 dialogue in Delhi in early September. All Indian students safe after Perm University shooting, says embassy

Over 55,000 Indian students and exchange visitors are travelling to study in the US this year and it is "an all-time record", the US embassy said on Monday.

It said more visa applications were approved in the current year than ever before notwithstanding the coronavirus pandemic.

"The US mission in India is pleased to announce that its embassy and consulates approved more student visa applicants in 2021 than ever before, despite the global COVID-19 pandemic," the embassy said.

"Through these efforts, more than 55,000 students and exchange visitors are boarding planes to study in the US, and more students are being approved every day," it said in a statement.

In a tweet, the embassy described it as an all-time record.

"Huge congratulations to our hardworking consular teams across the U.S. Mission in India. This year, more than 55K students are boarding planes to study in the United States, an all-time record in India. Wishing all students a successful academic year!" it said.

Ambassador Atul Keshap, the Charge d'Affaires at the US embassy, lauded the staff involved in the issuance of visas and said Indian students enrich US society, achieve high levels of academic success, and deepen the bonds of friendship between the two countries.

"Studying in the US is a unique and often life-changing experience for Indian students, granting fresh, global perspectives and frequently leading to invaluable career opportunities," he said.

"Indian students also enrich US society, achieve high levels of academic success, and deepen the bonds of friendship between our countries. The many hard-working women and men of the US Mission to India are proud to facilitate their travel and study," Keshap added.

The embassy said the US missions typically begin interviewing fall semester students for a given year in May, but the second wave of COVID-19 forced a delay in the commencement of the student visa season by two months.

"In July, as soon as conditions allowed for the resumption of visa services without endangering applicants' health and safety, consular teams worked not only to match but surpass, their pre-Covid workload," it said.

It said the US embassy and consulates opened additional hours for visa appointments and made every possible effort to ensure timely arrival for academic programmes for as many students as possible.

"Ultimately, these efforts paid off, as more students than ever before received visas to study in the US," the embassy said.

It said interested students can also participate in upcoming Education USA University Virtual Fairs to be held on August 27, for prospective graduate students and on September 3, for prospective undergraduate students.
