India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday (Apr 15) announced that the nation is likely to experience above-normal cumulative rainfall in the 2024 monsoon season. The weather department said that the La Nina conditions, linked to good monsoon in India, are likely to set in by August-September.

IMD said in its release that the forecast based on both dynamical and statistical models suggests that quantitatively, the monsoon seasonal rainfall from June to September is likely to be 106% of the Long Period Average, which means the long-term average.

The LPA of the season rainfall from June to September over the country as a whole based on the data of 1971-2020 is 87 cm.

During a news conference, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the Director General of IMD, said: "According to the rainfall data from 1971 till 2020, we have introduced new long-period average and normal. According to this normal, from June 1 to 30 September, the average of the total rainfall of the entire country will be 87 cm."

The official release also mentioned that the normal cumulative rainfall, however, does not guarantee uniform temporal and spatial distribution of rain across the country, with climate change further increasing the variability of the rain-bearing system.

The IMD chief further said that the data from 1951 to 2023 shows that India experienced above-normal monsoon rainfall on nine occasions when La Nina followed the El Nino event.

IMD's release mentioned that moderate El Niño conditions are prevailing over the equatorial Pacific region currently. Several climate model forecasts have indicated that El Niño conditions are likely to weaken further to neutral El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) conditions in the early part of the monsoon season and La Niña conditions are likely to develop during the second half of monsoon season.

A red alert has been issued in parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Pune as well as Kolhapur by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Leading to more floods, Mumbai is expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall as parts of the city have been inundated in waist-deep water since Monday.

In recent years, climate change has made rains more intense and less predictable even though they are common in Mumbai around this time of the year.

Officials told news agency PTI that two people have been washed away in flood waters and one person was injured after a portion of his house collapsed.

The 145-year-old India Meteorological Department (IMD) has launched its first app for the general public. This application will be called 'Mausam' and will provide its users with weather updates.

The application will also include radar-based forecasts updated every 10 minutes. The IMD already has another app called 'Meghdoot', however, it was meant for farmers only.

Mausam offers five services to users– current temperature, humidity, wind speed and wind direction for 200 cities and the information is updated eight times a day. It will also provide information on the sunrise, sunset, moonrise and moonset, three hourly warnings of local weather phenomena and their intensity issued for about 800 stations and will forecast the weather for 450 cities around the country.

The app will alert users twice a day to warn them of any intense weather phenomena, and station-wise radar forecasts updated every 10 minutes.

The alert will be issued for the next five days in colour code (red, orange and yellow).

The application was developed jointly by ICRISAT’s Digital Agriculture and Youth team, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune, and IMD.

The application will be launched on Monday on the occasion of its foundation day and it will be available on Playstore and Appstore.

“Meghdoot was meant only for farmers. This is for everyone. The now-cast feature of this app will tell you if there will be rain, thunder or any other severe weather in your area based on data from the nearest meteorological station. Otherwise, there will be city-based information and forecasts and even radar products,” said M Rajeevan, secretary in the ministry of earth sciences.

IMD: India to have normal monsoon in 2020

Icy winds from the hills brought the mercury in the national capital down on Wednesday, the weather department said.

The city recorded a minimum of 7.1 degrees Celsius, two notches less than that recorded on Tuesday and a notch below normal for this time of the year, the India Meteorological Department said.

The maximum temperature dropped to 17.9 degrees Celsius, from 20.2 degrees Celsius recorded on Tuesday. It was three notches less than normal.

The weather station at Mungeshpur recorded a maximum of 14.3 degrees Celsius.

In the morning, a dense layer of fog engulfed Delhi and surrounding areas, disrupting train and flight operations.

Five flights were diverted and 22 trains delayed by up to eight hours, officials said.

A fresh western disturbance January 28 onwards is expected to trigger "fairly widespread" rainfall in the entire northwest India and "good" snowfall in the hills, the weatherman said.

Strong surface winds are expected on Thursday which will help improve air quality. On Wednesday, the overall air quality stood at 370 at 4 pm.
