India: Drugs worth $1.2 billion seized from two cities, former pilot among six arrested

The United Kingdom Home Secretary, Suella Braverman expressed concerns over the free trade agreement (FTA) between India and Britain which she believes would go against Brexit objectives and encourage immigration to the country.

These remarks were made during an interview, on Thursday, with The Spectator magazine, where she also dubbed Indians as the “largest group of people who overstay” their visas in the UK. According to reports, she said that she will not back the trade deal which gives New Delhi greater visa concessions.

This comes amid the UK Prime Minister Liz Truss urging the British lawmaker and negotiators to adhere to the Diwali deadline for finalising the FTA. “I have concerns about having an open borders migration policy with India because I don't think that's what people voted for with Brexit,” said Braverman.

When asked about students and entrepreneurs she said there may be some flexibility, “But I do have some reservations. Look at migration in this country – the largest group of people who overstay are Indian migrants,” she told the British weekly magazine.

Braverman also referred to the Migration and Mobility Partnership (MMP) which was signed between her predecessor Priti Patel former Home Secretary and the External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar in May last year and said, “We even reached an agreement with the Indian government last year to encourage and facilitate better cooperation in this regard. It has not necessarily worked very well.”

The MMP was a “landmark agreement” signed between the UK and the government of India which “will provide new opportunities to thousands of young people in the UK and India seeking to live, work and experience each other's cultures,” said the former Home Secretary at the time. She also indicated that it will become easier for the British government to remove those “with no right to be in the UK” and “crack down on those abusing our system.”

Braverman also reiterated how she had campaigned to leave the European Union (EU) partly because she wanted migration to reduce. She added, “That was in our 2019 manifesto. If you look at net migration figures, they have not fallen…we’re pretty much at the same level as pre-Brexit.”

In 2020, at least 20,706 Indians overstayed their visas, according to data from the UK home office which is a higher number of people, than any other country. Reportedly the Diwali deadline was set by former PM Boris Johnson and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi when Truss was secretary of state for international trade.

UK home secretary expresses ‘reservations’ about trade deal with India

If the very manufacturers of a machine expect it to work for only a six-month duration, then it must be taken for granted that every additional day (beyond six months) of its operation is purely a bonus.

If the very manufacturers of a machine expect it to work for only a six-month duration, then it must be taken for granted that every additional day (beyond six months) of its operation is purely a bonus. The aforementioned situation is all the more applicable when it comes to machines that have to entirely operate in the harsh environs of Earth's orbit, deep space, or specifically Mars orbit. We are referring to India's maiden Mars Orbiter Mission(MoM) Mangalyaan, which is speculated to have recently reached the end of its life, after completing nine successful years post-launch from the Earth. There have been recent reports regarding Mangalyaan having run out of fuel and its battery being drained. However, the Indian space agency i.e. ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) has not yet come out with any official communication in this regard. Firstly, one must understand that satellites carry a finite amount of fuel and can exhaust them sooner or later depending on how many times they have to fire their engine(s). In the case of Mangalyaan, the spacecraft had to expend fuel to perform multiple Orbit Raising Manoeuvres (ORM) and also to insert itself into Martian orbit and thereafter get aligned into the final intended orbit. Additionally, the spacecraft had to also perform burns to correct its orbit and also to avoid any comet showers. Despite all this, the spacecraft functioned for at least eight years in Martian orbit and performed scientific activities to study the Martian surface features, morphology, mineralogy, and Martian atmosphere. Read more: India's Mangalyaan mission comes to an end with no fuel and drained battery, says source According to ISRO, the highlights of this mission include having taken snapshots of the full disc of Mars at its farthest point and finer details from the closest point as well as first-time observation of the far side of Deimos, one of the moons of Mars. The Mars Colour Camera, one of the scientific payloads onboard the spacecraft, has produced 1100+ images so far and published a Mars Atlas, and has helped publish more than 35 research papers in peer-reviewed journals. As recently as last week, speaking at an event commemorating '8 Years of Mangalyaan', a senior ISRO scientist shared specific details on the MoM. "Right now, we have no fuel left, to be able to change the geometry of the spacecraft to the sun" the scientist is heard saying in the video. It was also elaborated that the spacecraft had to operate during back-to-back, long-duration eclipses(periods when the shadow of Mars falls on it, thus hindering its ability to receive solar energy on its panels and charge its batteries). Sr #ISRO scientist says “Right now, there is no fuel left..we are not able to change the geometry between the spacecraft and the sun”.. this is from last week’s @isro event titled ‘8 yrs of #Mangalyaan #MarsOrbiter ‘ ISRO foresaw the inevitable! Hoping for a statement on MoM pic.twitter.com/JXIHUlNF8K — Sidharth.M.P (@sdhrthmp) October 3, 2022 × "From April 1, 2022, we have had back-to-back long eclipses that spanned anywhere from 30 minutes to seven-and-a-half hours...the one we really survived was an eclipse that lasted six and a half hours," the scientist says. Notably, the spacecraft did a critical manoeuvre in 2017 and ended up burning 20 kilogrammes of its 33 kg fuel. After that manoeuvre, the spacecraft had only 13 kg of fuel left, of which 2.5 kg is required every year for basic manoeuvres to remain in orbit, the scientist stated. Finally, it was added that there is only around 2 or 2.4 kg of fuel left in the spacecraft and that quantity won't be sufficient for any future manoeuvres. Read more: ISRO VSSC Director explains significance of latest hybrid rocket motor test Going by that statement, it is evident that ISRO has been well aware of the inevitable. Perhaps, the agency is making final attempts to possibly establish contact with the spacecraft and ascertain its condition. Under these conditions, it would be best for the Indian space agency itself to use proper channels and expeditiously communicate relevant information on MoM's health. This mission was accomplished in September 2014. Since mid-2015 (beyond the planned six months) the functioning of the spacecraft is only a bonus. For the coming times, the focus must remain on making the best use of the scientific data captured by this mission and enhancing the knowledge base about Mars and applying those lessons in future Mars exploration missions. Only a few weeks after the United States Supreme Court issued a contentious ruling allowing individual states to outright ban or severely restrict the ability of pregnant women to seek abortions, news of a similar case made headlines in India.

The 1973 Roe v. Wade decision was overturned in the US, which was seen as "a massive step back for women's rights," while Thursday's verdict by the Indian Supreme Court is being welcomed as "historic" and "a big stride ahead" for women's rights.

The Indian apex court said that all women, even those who are not married and those who are not cisgender women, have equal rights to abortion, which is undoubtedly progressive in a nation where 73 million unmarried women reside.

The decision was made in response to a petition filed in July by a 25-year-old single woman who had been in a consenting relationship and was 22 weeks pregnant.

The woman claimed that carrying an unborn child would expose her to "social stigma and persecution" as her partner had abruptly declined to marry her.

She also claimed that because she didn't have a career and didn't come from a wealthy household, she couldn't afford to raise a child and that she wasn't psychologically ready to do so. After the Delhi High Court denied her request for an abortion, the woman went to the top court.

The regulations were so strict that even survivors of rape, including minors who were unaware of their pregnancy, had to go to court to request authorisation to end a pregnancy if it was found after 20 weeks.

The case of ‘bodily autonomy’

The Indian court said that a woman's right to bodily autonomy and the freedom to determine the course of her own life lay "firmly rooted" in the decision of whether to carry a pregnancy to term or end it. It said that an unintended pregnancy could negatively impact a woman's entire life "by interrupting her education, her career, or affecting her mental well-being."

The court further stated that single women's exclusion would encourage them to seek unsafe abortions, which kill a startling number of women in India. The UN Population Fund estimates that every day in the nation, some eight women pass away due to complications from unsafe abortions.

Single women have sex too. Period.

Women's rights advocates from all over India have applauded the decision, and a reading of the verdict demonstrates why it is crucial on a number of levels.

In addition to granting all women the same rights and freedoms, the court also recognised that single women can have relationships that involve sex. This is a fairly novel idea in a country with a strongly patriarchal culture where women have little sexual autonomy, premarital sex is frowned upon, and some communities even require brides to take a humiliating "virginity test" to prove that they are "virgin" on their wedding night.

The judges emphasised that because Indian society and the family have changed significantly over time, laws cannot be interpreted based on "narrow patriarchal principles" about what is considered "permissible sex." Additionally, live-in relationships, premarital sex, and gay sex cannot be "seen through the lens of criminality."

Addressing marital rape

The judgment's statements regarding marital rape are another significant factor that has contributed to its media attention in India.

A petition to make rape within marriage a crime is currently being heard by the Supreme Court. According to an outdated colonial-era rule that still exists in India, sex "by a man with his wife" that is not a juvenile is not considered to be rape.

The judges made it very clear that if a woman became pregnant "due to a husband's act of sexual assault or rape, she should not be compelled to give birth to and raise a child with."

But as that issue was being heard by another bench," they did not intend their order to address the legality of marital rape.

Amid fears of global recession, leading IT and tech firms in India like Wipro, Infosys and Tech Mahindra have revoked offer letters given to students, said reports. The joining of these previously selected candidates was delayed by nearly three-four months. According to reports, hundreds of freshers were given offer letters but first the joining of those candidates were postponed and finally, their offer letter was revoked.

The news was first reported by Business Line. The report quoted e-mails sent by these companies to candidates.

The offer letters were issued to students after rounds of interviews. The candidates went through rigorous selection process.

"It has been identified that you are not meeting our academic eligibility criteria. Hence your offer stands null and void," one of the emails read.

There was no immediate reaction from the companies.

The global macroeconomic conditions, amid recession fears and rising inflation, have hit the Indian industries, and the IT/tech industry in the country is not immune.

Experts and market watchers predict that IT industry would face slowdown further.

TCS earlier postponed variable pay to its employees while Infosys reportedly slashed it to 70 per cent and Wipro deferred it completely.

According to a latest report by Naukri.com, the IT sector recorded a decrease of 10 per cent in hiring activity in August.

India: Major IT companies revoke offer letters given to freshers

On Monday, Pakistan’s Foreign Office responded to External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar’s remarks which compared India’s IT (information technology) industry to the “neighbouring” country’s expertise in “International Terrorism”. This comment was described as “highly irresponsible and gratuitous” by Pakistan.

These remarks were made on Saturday when India’s foreign minister was addressing an event named “Rising India and the World: Foreign Policy in Modi Era” in the Indian state of Gujarat. According to reports, the EAM said that while India is considered an “expert in IT” (information technology) the “neighbouring” country is known as an “expert in International Terrorism”.

“No other country practices terrorism in the manner in which Pakistan has done. You show me anywhere in the world what Pakistan has done for so many years against India. After the 26/11 Mumbai attack, it is important for us to be clear to ourselves that this kind of behaviour and action is unacceptable and there will be consequences,” said Dr Jaishankar, during the event.

The EAM also noted how the world’s understanding of terrorism has also changed and it is not tolerated anymore, “Earlier, other countries used to ignore this issue thinking it would not affect them because it was happening somewhere else. Today, there is a pressure on those who support terrorism. This is an example of our diplomacy.”

The FO of Pakistan in response to these remarks released a statement which read, “Pakistan categorically rejects Indian External Affairs Minister's highly irresponsible and gratuitous remarks made at Vadodara (Gujarat), India insinuating at Pakistan's so-called involvement in international terrorism.”

It added the EAM’s remarks are “unfounded” and “yet another manifestation of the Indian leaders’ obsession to concoct facts with respect to terrorism for misleading the international community”. The statement also asserted, “Pakistan is the only country that has stemmed the tide of terror directed against it from elements and states with inimical motives.”

Islamabad’s foreign office also reportedly accused India of supporting terrorism against Pakistan from its’ terrority and others countries in the region. These comments are contrary to the successive United Nations reports on terrorism for which India has presented evidence before the international community regarding Pakistan’s terror modules, said a report by ANI.

Furious Pakistan rejects Indian foreign minister Jaishankar's 'international terrorism' quip

Mangalyaan, India's first expedition to Mars, has reached its destination after it has been claimed that the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) ran out of propellant, making it challenging to revive in the Red Planet's orbit.

This news is sparking conclusions that MOMs have completed their journey. Operated by ISRO, the space department has still not confirmed this. India's first interplanetary mission, 'Mangalyaan', was launched in 2013 onboard PSLV-C25, making ISRO's fourth space agency to do so. It has been one of the most economical extraterrestrial missions ever created, costing only $74 million.

In conversation with PTI, a source said that no fuel is left in Mangalyaan. The source further added, "Recently there were back-to-back eclipses including one that lasted seven-and-half hours. As the satellite battery is designed to handle an eclipse duration of only about one hour and 40 minutes, a longer eclipse would drain the battery beyond the safe limit."

MOM was designed with five instruments to investigate the morphology, mineralogy, and atmosphere of the Red Planet, India Today reported. The spacecraft served as proof to show that India is capable of designing, launching, and managing an interplanetary mission.

As per ISRO's officials, "MOM is credited with many laurels like cost-effectiveness, a short period of realisation, economical mass-budget, and miniaturisation of five heterogeneous science payloads."

With no official statement from ISRO, former director general in 2021, K Sivan, stated that Mangalyaan-2 will be launched after Chandrayaan-3, India's forth-coming mission. The second Mars mission is still in the planning stages.

India's Mangalyaan mission comes to an end with no fuel and drained battery, says source

On September 28, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in the Indian city of Mumbai, seized at least 3.2 kilograms of high-grade black cocaine, worth Rs 13 crore from a Bolivian woman at the city’s international airport. Furthermore, based on information revealed during her interrogation they also arrested a Nigerian national from the state of Goa.

According to the city’s NCB Zonal Director Amit Ghawate, the department heard from a credible source that the Bolivian national would be arriving in Mumbai and subsequently detained her. Reportedly, a thorough search of her luggage was conducted, within which they found false cavities and recovered 12 tightly wrapped packages with a black substance.

She was arrested with the contraband smuggled from Brazil along with a Nigerian national from Goa who was supposed to receive it. The drug enforcement agency also indicated that the seizure of black cocaine is rare.

Black cocaine is regular cocaine, which is typically white in colour, it is the additional substance that makes it black in colour. This is done to neutralise the smell of cocaine which ensures that sniffer dogs at the airport cannot detect it. It also reportedly makes it easier to smuggle as it can be disguised as asphalt, printer toner, charcoal, fertiliser or metal moulds.

It is now being used by drug peddlers coming from South American countries, reports suggest. Additionally, black cocaine can also interfere with colour-based drug tests. However, it cannot be used as is, once smuggled common organic solvents like methylene chloride or acetone are used to extract the cocaine hydrochloride or base after which it is converted to powdered cocaine hydrochloride.

While black cocaine is not new, it is quite rare at least in India. According to reports, it was created in the mid-1980s after Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet ordered his army to create a clandestine cocaine which could be smuggled past law enforcement in the United States and Europe.

In 2008, it was seized by the police in Spain, back then it was made into rubber-like sheets and converted into luggage. Last year, the police seized a consignment of almost 860 kgs of black cocaine in Spain and busted the drug ring that smuggled it, in this case, it was reportedly disguised as charcoal.

According to Indian officials, this is a disturbing trend, they realise that if they had not received the tip it would have been very difficult to find this contraband. Cocaine is one of the most expensive drugs and South American countries have been a major supplier of the substance in India, as that’s where the coca plants grow. Since the drug is so expensive, it is predominantly used by the upper class and affluent.

The US treasury department earlier this week imposed sanctions on companies suspected of involvement in Iran's petrochemical and petroleum trade. One of the companies to have been sanctioned is reportedly based in India. In what can be described as the first such move against an oil shipment company in India, Washington sanctioned Mumbai-based Tibalaji Petrichem Private Limited. Reportedly, the company is suspected of 'purchasing millions of dollars worth' petrochemical products from Iran, bound for China. “Today’s action targets Iranian brokers and several front companies in the UAE, Hong Kong, and India that have facilitated financial transfers and shipping of Iranian petroleum and petrochemical products,” read the department's statement. “India-based petrochemical company Tibalaji Petrochem Private Limited has purchased millions of dollars’ worth of Triliance-brokered petrochemical products, including methanol and base oil, for onward shipment to China," the statement added. Read more: US imposes fresh sanctions on export of Iran oil Notably, after former President Donald Trump started his maximum pressure tactic, Iran was subjected to harsh sanctions. New Delhi, meanwhile, refused to endorse the sanctions but keeping the bilateral relations in mind, ceased oil imports from Iran in 2019. The timing of the sanction on Tibalaji is rather interesting. It comes days after external affairs minister S Jaishankar wrapped up his whirlwind tour of the US. Sources close to the matter, however, believe that the sanctions on the Indian company could be revoked if Iran returns to the table and signs the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). WATCH | US targets companies for violating Iran oil sanctions × As reported by WION, Washington and Tehran's indirect talks to revive the 2015 nuclear pact or JCPOA have broken down. "As Iran continues to accelerate its nuclear programme in violation of the JCPOA, we will continue to accelerate our enforcement of sanctions on Iran’s petroleum and petrochemical sales under authorities that would be removed under the JCPOA," US secretary of state Anthony Blinken said in a statement. Snehan, a fourteen-year-old boy from India is the youngest in the world to swim in the North Channel, the strait between Northern Ireland and south-western Scotland. He performed the feat as part of a six-member team from India that crossed the 35km strait in a relay format. The independent team from India, comprising of three para swimmers and three able-bodied swimmers swam across the strait starting from 6:30 am and completed the swim by 9:09 pm.

Notably, the North Channel is among the Ocean's Seven or the list of seven marathon open water swims. The most challenging factor of swimming across the North Channel is that even the summer temperature of the water is around 12 to 15 degrees Centigrade. Swimming across such waters for a long duration requires special acclimatization and training, over and above the experience of marathon open water swimming.

Starting from Robbie Island (Northern Ireland), the Indian relay team took turns and swam to Port Patrick (Scotland), covering the 35km distance in a duration of 14 hours and 34 minutes. Being a challenging stretch to swim across, only the most experienced and confident swimmers take up this challenge and 14-year-old Snehan was just that, says his coach Vijaykumar.

In terms of the special training undertaken to get used to the cold water, Snehan and the team had reached Europe weeks in advance and started training for nearly four hours a day in the open waters.

Recalling his protege's feats, Dr M. Vijaykumar, Swimming Coach, SDAT, told WION that Snehan had earlier swam the 60km back and forth distance between two points along the Palk Strait - Dhanushkodi In Tamil Nadu and Talaimannar in Sri Lanka, within 19 hours and 45 minutes. He also confidently added that the next task in Snehan's sight is to swim across the English Channel.

Speaking to WION, Snehan said that he started swimming at the age of eight and then graduated to open water sea swimming and bagged Gold at the National Sea Swimming event at Goa and later swam back and forth across the Palk Strait. Tech giant Oracle has been fined $23 million by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for breaking the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). The punishment was issued for funnelling money to corrupt officials in Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and India.

The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) was allegedly violated by Oracle Corporation when subsidiaries in Turkey, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and India created and used slush funds to bribe foreign officials in exchange for business between 2016 and 2019, according to a statement released by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Tuesday. Oracle Corporation was ordered to pay more than $23 million to resolve the charges.

In contravention of Oracle norms and procedures, the SEC's order claims that Oracle subsidiaries in Turkey and the UAE also utilised the slush funds to pay for foreign officials to attend technology conferences. According to the order, workers of the Turkey subsidiary occasionally utilised this cash to pay for the officials' families to go to California or accompany them on side excursions to international conferences.

“The SEC previously sanctioned Oracle in connection with the creation of slush funds. In 2012, Oracle resolved charges relating to the creation of millions of dollars of side funds by Oracle India, which created the risk that those funds could be used for illicit purposes," the statement said.

The establishment of off-book slush funds obviously increases the chance that those monies may be misused, which is precisely what occurred at Oracle's Turkey, UAE, and India subsidiaries, according to Charles Cain, head of the SEC's FCPA branch. This situation emphasises how important it is for a corporation to have efficient internal accounting controls throughout every aspect of its operations.

Oracle consented to pay a $15 million fine, nearly $8 million in disgorgement, and to cease and desist from violating the FCPA's anti-bribery, books and records, and internal accounting controls requirements without acknowledging or disputing the SEC's findings.

Oracle consented to pay a $15 million fine, nearly $8 million in disgorgement, and to cease and desist from violating the FCPA's anti-bribery, books and records, and internal accounting controls requirements without acknowledging or disputing the SEC's findings. The base model or the cheapest version of the EV will offer a driving range of 250 kilometres on one charge, while a higher, more expensive version will offer a range of up to 315 kilometres on a single charge.

Currently, in India, Tata is the sole automaker with electric vehicles and the Tiago EV is likely to further solidify the Indian automaker's dominance in the country's electric car industry. As per Reuters, government subsidies and hefty tariffs that have prevented imports play a large part in Tata's success.

The operating cost of the Tiago EV is significantly less than its gasoline variant, with the former costing around INR 1,100 in charging costs to travel 1,000 kilometres or 621 miles, while the latter would use up approximately INR 7,500 worth of fuel for the same distance. This means that the EV's operating cost is about one-seventh of the gasoline model.

You are alone, walking along a hillside track and are suddenly being charged by a herd of wild elephants. Such a situation is more than adequate to make most people's heart stop. However, a man from Chinnakanal village in Kerala's scenic and hilly Idukki district maintained his composure and presence of mind to not just escape, but also climb onto and remain atop a nearby eucalyptus tree for more than an hour and a half. Saji, the 40-year-old man was walking to his agricultural land when he came up close to the elephant herd. When a tusker in the herd charged at him, he ran to the safety of a nearby grassy tract and climbed atop what looked like a eucalyptus tree. #viral #Video of the gutsy #keralite from #idukki ,who braved a herd of charging #elephants , ran to safety & climbed the nearest eucalyptus tree… He held on atop the tree for 1.5hrs until villagers & foresters came & chased the herd away.. #india #kerala #wildlife #forest pic.twitter.com/KPcG6w4HbY — Sidharth.M.P (@sdhrthmp) September 28, 2022 × Videos of the incident show that the elephant herd was barely few meters away from the tree and Saji was watching them from atop. While Saji held on to the tree for more than 90 minutes, villagers and forest staff managed to move away the herd by bursting firecrackers and screaming loudly. Unfazed by the fact that he escaped a chasing #tusker , held on to a tree top for 1.5hrs. Saji coolly recalls the incident- how where were 3 elephants and 2 babies..he was chased and climbed atop the tree. He also added that there were three elephants in the herd and two baby elephants. Extremely protective of their little ones, elephants tend to get provoked and agitated when approached in the presence of their babies. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Indian firms would likely increase employee compensation by 10.4 per cent in 2023, which would be virtually in line with the 10.6 per cent increase seen so far in 2022, as reported by Reuters.

The likelihood of a double-digit pay hike comes as the south Asian nation struggles with skyrocketing inflation amid concerns of a recession in the global economy. In August, India's inflation increased to 7 per cent, continuing an eight-month streak in which it exceeded the central bank's tolerance target.

In a statement based on a poll, Roopank Chaudhary, partner, of human capital solutions at Aon in India, said that the compensation boost reflects "the confidence that corporate India has in its strong business performance."

Data from 1,300 businesses in more than 40 categories were analysed for the survey.

The impact of increased costs and salary pressures must be balanced, Chaudhary added, with the relatively high rate of turnover and the continuous need for vital talent.

The study revealed that staff departures were still high in the first half of this year (20.3 per cent), but slightly lower than the 21 per cent in 2021.

With a forecasted pay growth of 12.8 per cent, e-commerce tops all other sectors, followed by start-ups, hi-tech/information technology and IT-enabled services, 11.3 per cent, and financial institutions, 10.7 per cent.

Amid fears of a global slowdown compounded by investors' risk aversion to equity markets, Rupee tumbled to a new low on Monday. Reportedly, the Indian currency fell 38 paise to hit an all-time low of 81.

Amid fears of a global slowdown compounded by investors' risk aversion to equity markets, Rupee tumbled to a new low on Monday. Reportedly, the Indian currency fell 38 paise to hit an all-time low of 81.47 against the US greenback before closing the day at 81.6225 per dollar. Notably, the rupee had reached a low of 81.22 on Friday, prompting the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to quickly sell dollars. Consequently, the rupee had a little breather. The Indian rupee taking a beating comes in the backdrop of a hawkish US Fed hiking interest rates by 75 basis points to 3-3.25 per cent last week. This was the third straight time that the Fed had announced a hike, primarily meant to arrest the sky-inflation rates in the country. However, it instantly lead to a mismatch in the global economies. The two major currencies in Asia, the yen and the yuan have tumbled as well due to investors fearing that the Asian market may experience crisis-level stress once again. Read more: Indian rupee hits new low, slips below 81-mark against US dollar for the first time ever It is pertinent to note that most major currencies across the globe have been struggling and depreciating against the US dollar. Speaking on the currency fluctuation, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman last week stated that Indian Rupee 'held up very well' against the US dollar when compared to other currencies. "If any one currency which has held its own and did not get into fluctuation or volatility as much as other currencies, it is the Indian rupee. We have held back very well," said Sitharaman. The RBI Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting is scheduled to be held later this week. The investors are keeping a close eye on the developments that come from the meeting. However, the sentiment leading to the meeting is rather downbeat amongst the investors. Experts believe that the rupee will tumble as risk-off sentiment takes the dollar index to 113.70 and sterling to 1.0557 against the dollar. World Contraception Day is marked on September 26 every year, since it first began in 2007. This day is marked to bring focus on creating awareness about contraceptives, family planning, and reproductive rights of individuals and couples, empowering them to make decisions regarding their sexual and reproductive health, freely and responsibly.

This day is also marked to raise awareness about the importance of contraceptives, how essential it is to have access to them and to shed a light on different birth control methods. On this day in 2007, 10 international family planning organisations asserted that using contraceptives and enabling a planned decision on starting a family is essential, hoping that one day every pregnancy becomes wanted.

This echoed a similar sentiment expressed by former United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Executive Director, late Dr Nafis Sadik, in 1994, she said “Healthy families are created by choice, not by chance.” Today this day and aim is supported by at least 15 international NGOs, medical and scientific communities, and governmental organizations across the world with the aim to impart the right knowledge about sexual and reproductive health.

Significance of the day

Every year, the significance of World Contraception Day is reiterated by several international organisations, including the UN who aims for universal access to sexual and reproductive health services as of one of its Sustainable Development Goals to achieve by 2030.

It states, “By 2030, ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive healthcare services, including family planning, information and education, and the integration of reproductive health into national strategies and programs.”

A statement issued ahead of World Contraception Day on September 26 and the International Safe Abortion Day on September 28 by the UN Human Rights organisation reads, “The world has been experiencing promising developments but also important setbacks affecting the right to sexual and reproductive health, including on the right to a safe abortion.”

They went on to assert that Human rights laws stipulate that a woman must be free to choose when to get pregnant, how many children to have and how to space their pregnancies, and any law or policies that deny girls or women the right to access sexual and reproductive health is “inherently discriminatory”.

Even today, over 250 million women who do not wish to get pregnant are not using safe or modern methods of contraception, while at least 172 million use none of the methods of contraception, said the UNFPA report.

Women have cited reasons like concerns about side effects and misconceptions of effects on long-term fertility. While others in several parts of the world are “forbidden to use contraception by their husbands, partners, or in-laws,” said the report. There are also a lot of stigmas surrounding the use of contraceptives, while some women don’t know about it, and cannot access or afford them.

The Human rights statement also called for the States to respect women’s autonomous decision-making and not limit their access to contraceptives “to the obtention of the authorisation of husbands, partners or parents of girls seeking counselling on contraceptives.”

Every year, this day is marked by online and offline campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of contraceptives to sexual and reproductive health. Furthermore, events held in line with this day also discuss unintended pregnancy, lack of contraceptives, family planning, and so on.

Where does India stand on the use of contraceptives?

India being a developing country and the world’s second most populous one, the use of contraceptives has been central to the country’s family planning and population control schemes.

According to a report by Family Planning 2020 (FP2020), over 139 million women and girls in India are now using modern methods of contraception. As a result, more than 54.5 million unintended pregnancies were avoided, 1.8 million unsafe abortions and 23,000 maternal deaths were averted in 2020 alone.

ALSO READ: Fear of contraceptive methods still prevalent in rural India

Addressing an event in 2021, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dr Harsh Vardhan, said, “Improving the quality of contraceptives, augmenting contraceptive demand through comprehensive IEC campaigns, and focused interventions in high fertility districts through Mission Parivar Vikas, have been few of the country’s notable achievements.”

Dr Vardhan summed up India’s vision for family planning as “Every Child is Wanted, Every Birth is Safe, and Every Girl and Woman is treated with Dignity”.

ALSO READ: Fear of contraceptive methods still prevalent in rural India Addressing an event in 2021, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dr Harsh Vardhan, said, “Improving the quality of contraceptives, augmenting contraceptive demand through comprehensive IEC campaigns, and focused interventions in high fertility districts through Mission Parivar Vikas, have been few of the country’s notable achievements.” Dr Vardhan summed up India’s vision for family planning as “Every Child is Wanted, Every Birth is Safe, and Every Girl and Woman is treated with Dignity”. History and significance of World Contraception Day

The ‘Make in India’ campaign to boost manufacturing in the country has completed eight years on September 25, the government said. India is also on course to attract at least $100 billion in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the current fiscal year, which the government has attributed to economic reforms and ease of doing business in the country.

“Make in India has substantial accomplishments across 27 sectors. These include strategic sectors of manufacturing and services as well”, the commerce and industry ministry said on Saturday in a statement.

In 2021-22, India also received the “highest-ever” FDI of $83.6 billion. “This FDI has come from 101 countries, and invested across 31 union territories and states and 57 sectors in the country.” According to the government, FDI inflows were at $45.15 billion in 2014-15 and have been increasing ever since reaching a record high of eight years.

The statement also said New Delhi has installed a more liberal and transparent policy to attract FDI, adding that currently most of the sectors in the Indian economy are open to FDI via the automatic route. The automatic route is one of the ways that foreign investments can be made in India, the other being the government route. Under the automatic route, the investors do not require, or need lesser permissions from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) or from the Government of India to invest in various sectors of the economy.

The reforms also included the liberalisation of certain guidelines and regulations to reduce unnecessary compliance burdens and bring down the cost of doing business in India, said the statement. Furthermore, in line with the ‘Make in India’ initiative and to reduce the foreign import of toys while also enhancing the country’s production of toys domestically the Basic Customs Duty on the import of toys was increased from 20% to 60%.

The ministry also indicated that despite the pandemic, the Indian toy industry has grown with exports worth $326 million in FY21-22, which is an increase of over 61% from FY18-19. Meanwhile, the import of toys during FY21-22 reduced by 70% to $110 million.

Furthermore, in line with ‘Make in India’, the government had also introduced Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes, across 14 key manufacturing sectors in 2020-21. This reportedly included a $10 billion incentive for the production of a semiconductor, display, and design ecosystem in India which was done after recognising the importance of semiconductors in the world economy.

Furthermore, the scheme also incentivised strategic growth sectors where New Delhi has a comparative advantage. This included strengthening manufacturing in India, forming resilient supply chains, making Indian industries competitive and boosting exports.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry statement also addressed an initiative called One-District-One-Product (ODOP) which aimed at promoting the production of indigenous products from every district of the country. The manufacturers and artisans aiming to contribute to the socio-economic growth of different regions of the country were provided with an international platform, said the statement.

India: 'Make in India’ completes 8 years, FY23 FDI to cross $100 billion, says govt

Absolutely no offense to any language or people as we are one world. But strictly from Indian perspective, patients are often forced to think that Indian doctors have to complete a mandatory ancient Egyptian language course while learning medicine. The hieroglyphic writing on medical prescriptions is for the chemist's eyes only as it is only he (or she) who can de-code the apparent gibberish.

In simpler words, doctors (generally) have (very) bad handwriting.

It is hence a breath of fresh air, a sweet surprise and whatnot when you can actually read a prescription. More so when the handwriting is highest degree of neat. Dr Nithin Narayanan is gaining online fame for this very reason.

Dr Narayanan works at a Community Health Centre (CHC) in southern Indian state of Kerala. A medical prescription written by him has gone viral online for neat handwriting. What's more, the letters are all capital!

While speaking with news outlet Asianet, he said that he liked to write and his handwriting was neat since he was a child.

“My sister used to make me write in four-lined notebooks when I was a child. I love writing, so even when I write a prescription I try to write in block letters.” he said.

It is perhaps quite possible that prescriptions handwritten by Dr Narayanan are not only saving lives of the patients but also saving chemists from a trip to eye doctor.

In all seriousness though, his effort is laudable as while working in community health centre, one deals with grassroots of society. A clean, neatly written prescription is likely to reduce confusion and help in dispensation of correct medicines.

In a strong message on terrorism, India's external affairs minister S Jaishankar said on Saturday that no rhetoric, however sanctimonious, can ever cover up blood stains. He further asserted that nations who defend proclaimed terrorists in the United Nations neither advance their own interests nor their reputation, a signal to China and Pakistan.

In his address to the high-level UN General Assembly session here, Jaishankar said those who politicise the UNSC 1267 Sanctions regime, sometimes even to the extent of defending proclaimed terrorists, do so at their own peril.

“Having borne the brunt of cross border terrorism for decades, India firmly advocates a ‘zero- tolerance’ approach. In our view, there is no justification for any act of terrorism, regardless of motivation. And no rhetoric, however sanctimonious, can ever cover-up blood stains,” he said.

“The United Nations responds to terrorism by sanctioning its perpetrators. Those who politicise the UNSC 1267 Sanctions regime, sometimes even to the extent of defending proclaimed terrorists, do so at their own peril. Believe me, they advance neither their own interests nor indeed their reputation,” he said.

On Saturday, India’s ministry of external affairs (MEA) issued a warning which was brought to the ministry’s notice by the country’s missions in Bangkok and Myanmar. In the statement, they warned Indian youths against “lucrative job offers” based in Thailand through social media advertisements and agents.

“Instances of fake job rackets offering lucrative jobs to entice Indian youths for the posts of 'Digital Sales and Marketing Executives' in Thailand by dubious IT firms involved in call-centre scam and crypto-currency fraud have been brought to our notice recently by our Missions in Bangkok and Myanmar,” said the MEA statement.

The ministry said target groups are IT-skilled youth who are enticed by “lucrative job offers” like data entry in Thailand by social media ads and also by Dubai and India-based agents.

These victims are reportedly taken to Myanmar, illegally across the border and held captive to work in harsh conditions. “Therefore, Indian nationals are advised not to get entrapped in such fake job offers being floated through social media platforms or other sources,” the MEA said.

Subsequently, the statement read, “Before travelling on tourist/visit visa for employment purposes, Indian nationals are advised to check/verify credentials of foreign employers through concerned Missions abroad, and antecedents of recruiting agents as well as any company before taking up any job offer.”

This advisory comes following Thursday’s MEA weekly press briefing which warned Indian nations to exercise extreme caution while accepting job offers in Thailand as dozens of Indian citizens were illegally trafficked to Myanmar as part of an employment scam.

“We are aware that fraudulent IT companies that appear to engage in digital scamming and forged crypto activities seem to be operating with agents from Dubai, Bangkok, and India,” said the MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi. He added, they are recruiting Indians under the pretext of job offers and employment opportunities in Thailand.

The victims are then taken across the border in Myawaddy, a town in Myanmar, which is an area “difficult to access” given the local security situation, said Bagchi. He went on to thank the Missions in the country which have been able to rescue some of the victims from “captivity or forced labour”. Bagchi also indicated that rescue is underway for others and asked everyone to exercise extreme caution.

Morning news brief: US, China hold talks on Taiwan, India slams Pakistan & more

People's Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti has followed her old track and supported the Kashmir statement made by Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the United Nations. Sharif had raked up the Kashmir issue and said that Pakistan sought good relations and dialogue with India.

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti said, "Jammu & Kashmir is a complex issue and you know the condition here. It has been converted into a jail. Our youth are in jails across India. It's very important to solve the issue of Kashmir. There are killings every day, there are encounters. If the Pakistan PM has said that they want to solve the Kashmir issue, and has spoken about improving relations with India then it is a welcome step and should happen".

Mufti also claimed out that both countries are spending huge money on defence and that money can be used for the development of the respective countries and its people. ''The money that both the countries spend on defence can be used for development. We are behind Bangladesh with regard to GDP. Time has come that the Government of India should start a dialogue with Pakistan."

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had raked up the Kashmir issue at the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Friday. Addressing the session, Sharif said, “We look for peace with all our neighbours, including India. Former J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti again bats for Indo-Pak dialogue

Indian diplomat Mijito Vinito has slammed Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif after the latter's address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for raking the Kashmir issue and making anti-India remarks.

Indian diplomat Mijito Vinito has slammed Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif after the latter's address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for raking the Kashmir issue and making anti-India remarks. In his right to reply, Mijito Vinito, first secretary, Indian Mission to United Nations, said, "It is regrettable that the Prime Minister of Pakistan has chosen the platform of this august assembly to make false accusations against India." "He has done so to obfuscate misdeeds in his own country and to justify actions against India that the world considers unacceptable," said Vinito. Notably, Pakistan PM Shehbaz while addressing the general assembly had mentioned Kashmir more than 10 times and India more than nine times. Pakistani PMs in the past have used the famous green podium during the annual general assembly to rake up Kashmir, something that hasn't come as a surprise this time as well. Indian diplomat Mijito, raising the issue of Pakistan's support for terror, said, "A polity that claims it seeks peace with its neighbours would never sponsor cross border terrorism." He pointed out how Islamabad continues to "shelter planners of the horrific Mumbai terrorist attack, disclosing their existence only under pressure from the international community". As a policy, on multiple occasions, New Delhi has stated that no talks will happen unless Islamabad takes action against terrorism. The first secretary also highlighted the situation of minorities in the country, saying, "When young women in the thousands from the minority community are abducted as an SOP, what can we conclude about the underlying mindset?" Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, and Ahmadiyya's continue to face prosecution and discrimination in Pakistan, which has been well documented "Desire for peace, security and progress in the Indian subcontinent is real but that will surely happen when cross-border terrorism ceases and when governments come clean with the international community and their own people. When minorities are not persecuted and not least, when we recognise these realities before this assembly," the Indian diplomat concluded by saying. In 2020, Mijito had walked out of UNGA hall after then Pakistan PM Imran Khan started making anti-India remarks. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:
