A week after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and advised him that 'today's era is not of war', Moscow has reacted to the comments and how the US and West have latched on to it to target Russia. Reportedly, Russia's Ambassador to India Denis Alipov, while addressing a press conference was asked about PM Modi's comment to which he stated that the West was misconstruing the statement and selectively picking and overplaying a part. "The West uses only those quotes that suit them while ignoring other parts," said the Russian ambassador. The Russian envoy also added that New Delhi's version was consistent with its position on the issue since the beginning. As reported extensively by WION, during a meeting with Putin in Samarkand, PM Modi, in quite frank terms conveyed his position to the Russian leader. “I know that today’s era is not an era of war, and I have spoken to you on the phone about this,” said PM Modi while adding that democracy, diplomacy and dialogue have kept the world together. WATCH | 'This is not as era of war': Indian PM Modi tells Russian President Putin on sidelines of SCO summit × In reply, Putin said, “I know your position on the conflict in Ukraine, your concerns that you constantly express.” “We will do our best to stop this as soon as possible. However, unfortunately, the opposing side, the leadership of Ukraine, announced its refusal to continue negotiations and declared that they wanted to achieve their goals by military means, as they say ‘on the battlefield’. But nevertheless, we will always keep you informed of what is happening there,” added the Russian President. Since then, the western countries have lauded PM Modi's statement and tried to use it as a point to pressure Moscow. "I think what you heard in Uzbekistan by the leaders of both China and in India are indicative of the fact that Putin doesn't have a whole lot of sympathetic ears out there to what he's been doing in Ukraine," said John Kirby, coordinator for strategic communications at the National Security Council in the White House. Russia: West misquoting, selectively picking PM Modi's 'not an era of war' remark

India’s 19-year-old entrepreneur and founder of grocery delivery app Zepto, Kaivalya Vohra, became the latest person to join the rich list club of 1,103 Indians across 122 cities, who now have cumulatively accumulated their wealth of Rs 100 trillion, according to IIFL Wealth Hurun India Rich List 2022.

The report said that 221 billionaires made it on the 2022 list, down 16 compared with last year, while 13 people born in the 1990s have been added—all of whom are self-made, including Vohra.

The report further noted that these 1,103 Indians have a net worth of Rs 10 billion each — an increase of 62 per cent over five years.

“Cumulative wealth has increased by 9.4 per cent, while average wealth has decreased by 1 per cent. 602 individuals saw their wealth increase or stay the same, of which 149 are new faces, whilst 415 saw their wealth drop and there were 50 dropouts," IIFL Wealth and Hurun India said in a statement.

The study further said that over 82 per cent of the billionaires on the list are above the age of 50, and only 0.6 per cent of the rich on the list are below 30.

The study noted that the pharma sector contributed the most to the list, with 126 entrants, while Chemicals and Financial Services added the greatest number of new entrants.

“Gurugram debuted in the top 10 cities producing the most number of entrants and we have a record addition of 149 new faces to the list from 32 industries and 36 cities," said Anirudha Taparia, Joint CEO, IIFL Wealth.

The study pegs Adani and family's wealth at a staggering Rs 10.94 trillion.

“The trends prove that India has taken booster shots against the global crisis. Be it the Ukraine war or inflationary pressures, the India growth story continues despite all odds as India also gave a new No. 2 — Gautam Adani — to the Hurun Global Rich List,” said Anas Rahman Junaid, managing director and chief researcher, Hurun India.

“The unprecedented wealth creation in the past five years in India, when other countries are stalling and are in recessionary mode, reaffirms India as the ‘engine of growth’ for the global economy. Remember, the new additions to the list have occurred at a time when valuations are at a low, both in the listed and privately-held companies,” said Junaid.

The relationship between India and Turkiye, marked by irritants such as Ankara’s position on the Kashmir issue, is getting friendlier after the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Turkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Samarkand during the recent SCO summit.

Although External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had taken a hard line against Turkiye, the Modi-Erdogan meeting, notable for its “very constructive discussions” set the tone for a significant shift. Interestingly, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is perceived to have been instrumental in bringing about the shift that Modi wanted in India’s ties with Turkey.

Knowledgeable sources say that Goyal worked overtime and apprised the prime minister of the dangers of isolating Turkiye, especially the adverse impact of this on Indian industry. He drew attention to the fact that Turkiye is a global logistic power, from which India cannot remain distanced for too long.

There are some 150 Indian companies that have a presence in Istanbul. The bulk of them also conduct their business in Europe from Istanbul as it is more economical to operate out of Turkiye than Germany or elsewhere in Europe. Many of these companies are in the business of getting iron ore, coal and such raw materials into Turkiye, from where they then supply these to Europe as and when the need arises.

These business groups are said to have pushed their case with Goyal, who saw merit in their viewpoints and conveyed it to the prime minister. Thereafter, according to sources, instructions went from the prime minister for improving relations.

However, the process to reset relations with Turkiye had begun in early 2022, with a view to create the conditions that would be conducive for Modi and Erdogan to meet in Samarkand and show some result. As part of this process, MEA’s Secretary (West) Sanjay Verma had visited Ankara to clear the decks for reviving foreign office consultations, which were indeed held on June 10.

By then India had also appointed an ambassador to Turkiye. This was a reversal of the hard line that an envoy need not be sent until Ankara changed its stand on Kashmir and stopped backing Pakistan.

During the period of this hard line, Jaishankar was opposed to having any truck with Turkiye. He was angry that Turkiye helped Pakistan to dodge blacklisting by the FATF. In October 2021, there was a plan to have a statue of Mahatma Gandhi at a park in Ankara, which was cancelled at the eleventh hour. The bust had arrived in Ankara from New Delhi, only to be followed by a message from Jaishankar to cancel the event and keep relations cold to ‘punish’ Turkiye for Erdogan raking up the Kashmir issue again at the UN in September 2021. As a result, there was a palpable coolness when the new Turkish ambassador arrived in New Delhi.

Both India and Turkiye seem to have put that phase behind and moved on to engage productively. This is reflected in Erdogan’s address to the UN General Assembly on September 21, where he said it is “unfortunate” that India and Pakistan have not been able to establish peace 75 years after independence and hoped for “fair and permanent peace” in Kashmir.

Such a statement, to which Jaishankar responded with a reference to Turkey’s Cyprus problem, is viewed as being “neutral” and one result of the Modi-Erdogan talks in Samarkand. Neither Erdogan nor Jaishankar internationalised the issues (Kashmir and Cyprus, respectively); and, both desisted from referring to the UN Security Council resolutions on the respective issues.

The shift in relations seems to stem from the perception that it would be more productive for India, as an Asian power, to keep the focus on the big picture in its dealings with Turkey which is a Mediterranean power. Ankara’s sense of the war in Ukraine can be useful for New Delhi when Turkiye is seeking to position itself as a potential peacemaker on the world stage. And, the peacemaker’s role is something that is also being urged upon India especially after Modi’s observation to Russian President Vladimir Putin that “this is not an era of war”.

Commerce seems to have succeeded where diplomacy could not.

WION Spotlight | Modi-Erdogan meet lifts up India-Turkiye ties

Türkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdogan again raked up the Kashmir issue at the ongoing 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City.

In his address at the annual diplomatic gathering on Tuesday, Erdogan, who is a close ally of Pakistan, said that he hopes for "permanent peace" in Kashmir.

"India and Pakistan, after having established their sovereignty and independence 75 years ago, still haven't established peace and solidarity between one another. This is much unfortunate. We hope and pray that a fair and permanent peace and prosperity will be established in Kashmir," he said.

Erdogan’s comment comes four days after he met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in the Uzbek city of Samarkand.

It was their first encounter in over two years since relations soured after Erdogan's comments on Kashmir during his visit to Pakistan in 2020.

At the time, the Indian government summoned the Turkish ambassador to lodge a diplomatic protest.

India has time again given a prompt response to Erdogan whenever he mentioned Kashmir at UNGA. On Wednesday, India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) told the Supreme Court that there was no criminality found following the investigation into intercepted conversations between the former lobbyist Niira Radia with several politicians, lawmakers, and industrialists. The probe was ordered back in 2013, by the country’s apex court as they believed that these conversations were indicative of “deep-rooted malice”.

The CBI was then asked to file a status report by the three-judge SC bench headed by Justice D Y Chandrachud and set the date for the next hearing on October 12. The CBI report was also submitted in response to a writ petition filed by industrialist Ratan Tata filed in 2011 who demanded a probe into how the conversations involving Radia got leaked and protested on the grounds of his privacy being violated which was threatened after the tapes leaked.

The Income Tax Department of India between 2008 to 2009 recorded thousands of conversations between Radia and politicians, lawyers, journalists and industrialists. Meanwhile the media reports at the time alleged that she was influencing the government and lawmakers’ portfolios during the United Progressive Alliance government, a grouping of centre-left political parties in India.

During today’s hearing, solicitor general Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the CBI said, “CBI was directed by your lordship to investigate all these conversations. 14 preliminary inquiries were registered and the report was placed before your lordships in a sealed cover.” She added, “No criminality was found in those. Also, now there are phone-tapping guidelines in place.” Bhati also went on inform the court that the report was submitted by the agency in 2015 but the matter was taken up by the court all these years.

On the other hand, the NGO Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL) pressed for a probe into the tapes and said they should be made public. Advocate Prashant Bhushan appearing for the CPIL before the bench that also included Justices Hima Kohli and P S Narasimha said that Radia was a corporate lobbyist for two of the most important companies and attempted to influence lawmakers and other influential people, he said basing his argument on public interest.

In October 2013, the supreme court ordered the CBI to launch an investigation and examine 14 issues that were identified by the agency at the time. Reportedly, the agency investigated over 5,800 taped conversations between Radia and others as a part of an investigation into tax evasion. The government tapped Radia’s phone following a complaint to the alleged that within nine years she had managed to build a Rs. 300 crore business empire.

At the time while ordering a probe the apex court told the CBI, “The conversations are indicative of the deep-rooted malice by private enterprises in connivance with government officials and others for extraneous purposes.” The court reportedly also said that the people involved have gained from government officers and others, which suggests corruption between the government and private entities.

India is a nation with a vibrant culture that welcomes individuals of different nationalities and religions. By this time, everyone has heard of travellers who came to the country just to end up falling in love with its people and culture.

In a similar incident, an American Muslim couple while on a visit to India was enamoured by the country's allure and chose to renew their vows in accordance with Hindu traditions.

The couple re-tied their knot in Jaunpur, a city in the North Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday.

Kiyamah Din Khalifa and Kesha Khalifa already had a Nikah, or a wedding as per Muslim rituals almost two decades back and even have nine children. However, they decided to get re-married in accordance with Hindu rituals after falling in love with the culture and traditions of India while on a visit to the nation.

Enthralled by Indian culture, Muslim American couple renew marriage vows as per Hindu rituals

According to a report released earlier today, the Global household wealth in 2021 rose by 9.8% ($463.6 trillion). Additionally, it also indicated that in the next 5 years, the number of millionaires in the world will grow by 40% despite the losses faced and rise in prices faced amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

On Tuesday, a report by Credit Suisse, a Switzerland-based investment bank and financial services firm, estimated that the top 500 richest people in the world lost at least $1.4 trillion in cumulative fortune in the first half of the year. However, they expect a fast recovery, particularly for developing markets.

Reportedly, there will be more than 87.5 million people with at least $1 million by 2026, which is an increase from 62.5 million in 2021. The Credit Suisse Group AG’s Global Wealth Report 2022 also shows that China is in the midst of doubling its millionaire population. Meanwhile, India is also expected to have more than double the amount of US dollar millionaires by the same year. In 2021, India had 7.96 lakh millionaires, this number is estimated to grow by 105% to 16.23 lakh.

Currently, the United States is at the top of the millionaire ranking followed by China at number 2, whereas India is home to only 1% of the world’s millionaires. To put this into perspective, the US has 39% of the world’s millionaires. Credit Suisse in their forecasts also predicted that private fortunes to rise by 36% ($169 trillion) by 2026.

The Swiss bank expects Beijing to continue to grow despite the current strain on its economy due to Covid-19 lockdowns and crackdowns in sectors like tech and property, said the report. They also noted how badly the developing markets were affected by the Covid-19 induced lockdowns and the effect it had on wealth growth. However, they indicate that the situation is becoming better since last year.

The report also forecasts that the developing economies in the upcoming years will at least narrow the gap between them and the developed world in the next five years, as the fortunes are expected to climb 10% annually in emerging economies as opposed to the 4.2% growth predicted for the developed world. The wealth per adult in India has risen at an impressive average annual rate of 8.8% since 2000. However, in 2021, it stood at $15,535 which is reportedly far below the global mean.

In 2021, the US topped the chart as it added the most household wealth, which is then followed by China, Canada, India and Australia, the report said. During a press conference, report author and Credit Suisse economist, Anthony Shorrocks said, “There has been a reduction in the difference between rich countries and less rich countries, in particular because low and middle-income countries are growing at a faster rate.”

Report: Number of millionaires in India, China to double by 2026

Last month, the Mumbai Police Crime Branch made an arrest acting on a tip which led to the discovery of an entire cell phone theft racket and uncovered how the city-based courier companies and villagers along the Indo-Bangladesh border were smuggling stolen cellphones across the border. By the end of August, the police were able to recover nearly 800 mobiles and arrest 21 people.

According to the sources, the high-end stolen phones would eventually be smuggled to countries like Nepal and Bangladesh while the old ones would keep circulating in India. In June 2022, constable Sambhaji Kolekar working at the Mumbai crime branch received a tip that a resident in the city was buying lost or stolen cellphones. Subsequently, a team was formed to verify how the operation was working.

Earlier this year, by July 15, the team was reportedly able to recover at least 490 smartphones and arrest the two accused. However, by the next month, the team would have recovered over 600 devices and arrested 12 people in connection with this racket. The police said that these phones “were stolen on buses or snatched by bike-borne perpetrators”.

The prime accused and his modus operandi

One of the perpetrators arrested in August was a villager from Tripura, a state close to the border, who told the police how the stolen phones were smuggled into Bangladesh. According to police sources, once the device is stolen from Mumbai its images and details are uploaded on a WhatsApp group which also has people from Bangladesh and Nepal. Subsequently, the selected phones are then packed in boxes and sent to Bangladesh.

According to the Mumbai police, one of the seven gang members and the prime accused of the racket is Ashfaq Ahmed Abdul Aziz Sheikh. “On the surface, he was a teacher at a Madarasa but in reality, he was a prime receiver of stolen phones. He was sending the phones to Nepal and Bangladesh through his contacts,” an officer told the media.

Sheikh was a part of 43 WhatsApp groups where he auctioned the handsets to people in Nepal and Bangladesh after changing the IMEI numbers. Reportedly, his wife and son live in Nepal where he has a bank account which had received Rs. 8 lakh from Nepal and Rs. 6 lakh from Bangladesh respectively, said the police. However, he and his gang members also bought stolen cell phones from mobile snatchers who operate across the financial capital.

“The boxes are then sent to a south Mumbai-based courier company, which has an Agartala, Tripura, address. The accused would collect the order in Agartala and pass it through the porous Indo-Bangladesh border, which is covered with jungles,” said the local police. They added that three people who would collect these stolen phones and sell them in Bangladesh have been identified.

The reason why these stolen cell phones are sold outside India is so that criminals do not have to spend money on erasing the IMEI number, which is traceable by law enforcement in the country. “Once the phone goes to another country, the IMEI number does not have much use for law enforcement agencies,” said the officer with knowledge of the matter.

Recent developments

The police have now managed to recover cell phones that are worth nearly a crore rupees. On the other hand, while the officers have identified the three culprits from Bangladesh they need additional evidence to hand over the case to Bangladeshi authorities for them to take action against these people, said the authorities.

Meanwhile, earlier this week, the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) seized mobile phones that were worth nearly Rs. 40 lakh in West Bengal’s Malda district which is a part of the state that is close to the Bangladesh-India International Border (IB). Reportedly, the consignment seized on Friday had at least 359 cell phones.

The BSF intelligence had been tracking the movement of these smugglers when the troops saw about “10 to 12 suspected smugglers moving towards fencing with bundles when the force reached there…the smugglers fled with the help of thick darkness and bushes. After that the jawans launched a special search operation, during the search, eight bags were recovered in the pit of soil near fencing.”

The authorities with the BSF have indicated that the names of many Indian smugglers have also emerged and an FIR has been lodged against them at the local police station. The cell phones have also been handed over to the police for further investigation and legal action said the BSF.

Students at Chandigarh University in the Punjab state of India are lodging a protest on the campus since Saturday night after objectionable videos of several girl students allegedly went viral on social media platforms.

According to sources, a girl student allegedly leaked private videos of her hostel mates to a friend who leaked them online. After the news of the incident spread across the campus, the students came out in protest and demanded a probe into the incident.

According to the police, the accused is a first-year MBA student at the university who has been arrested after being booked under Sections 354C of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant sections of the IT Act.

After the controversy snowballed, several rumours started doing the rounds with a few media channels reporting that victims had attempted suicide en masse on the campus. The police, however, cleared that no one had committed suicide.

On the viral video of a student being carried towards an ambulance, police said one student suffered from an anxiety attack.

Meanwhile, the college authorities refuted all the allegations and stated that no objectionable video has been released online.

"The rumor which is circulating through media that 60 objectionable MMS have been found of students...is totally false and baseless. During the preliminary investigation conducted by the university, there have been no videos found of any student which are objectionable except a personal video shot by a girl which was shared by herself to her boyfriend." said RS Bawa, pro-chancellor, Chandigarh University in a statement.

More than a month after Johnson & Johnson announced that it will stop the sale of its talc-based baby powder globally in 2023, the Indian state of Maharashtra on Friday cancelled the manufacturing licence of the pharmaceutical company. Reportedly, the state's Food & Drug Administration (FDA) cancelled the company's licence to manufacture the baby powder citing an inspection where it found its premier baby product to be sub-standard in quality. The agency collected samples from Pune and Nashik for quality checks and found the pH value of the powder to be much higher than the permissible levels. Consequently, the US-based company was issued a show-cause notice and ordered to recall all its stocks as the use of the product could affect the health and skin of newborn babies, according to an FDA statement. Reportedly, when quizzed about PM Modi's statement to Putin, John Kirby, coordinator for strategic communications at the National Security Council in the White House stated that Putin, through his actions was isolating himself. "I think what you heard in Uzbekistan by both the leaders of China and in India are indicative of the fact that Mr Putin doesn't have a whole lot of sympathetic ears out there to what he's been doing in Ukraine," said Kirby. "He (Putin) is only further isolating himself from the international community. We don't believe that now's the time to be doing any business as usual with Russia with respect to what they're doing in Ukraine,” the White House official added. Furthermore, US secretary of state Antony Blinken stated that what India and China communicated to Russia reflected the concerns of the world. “What you're hearing from China, from India, is reflective of concerns around the world about the effects of Russia's aggression on Ukraine,” said Blinken. As reported by WION, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) 2022 at Samarkand in Uzbekistan on Friday, PM Modi held a bilateral talk with the Russian President. With USD 377 million in loans, India is Sri Lanka's top lender in 2022: Report

India has extended assistance of $3.8 billion to help Sri Lanka recover from the economic collapse which saw unprecedented turmoil. Not long after, the India has put Sri Lanka in the dock at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for lack of “measurable progress” in resolving the Tamil minority issue.

New Delhi expressed concern on the human rights situation in Sri Lanka, namely, the continued denial of justice, dignity and peace to the minority Tamils by not sticking to its commitment to implement the 13th Amendment to the constitution.

Obviously, India is miffed over Colombo allowing a so-called Chinese “spy” ship to dock at Hambantota last month in spite of India’s opposition to it. Such situations are unavoidable for a country that is in debt to both India and China; a carrot from one is bound to bring forth the stick from the other.

In the race for regional supremacy between India and China, it is not only Sri Lanka but Nepal too that is caught in a cleft-stick.

In early September, India’s Chief of Army Staff, General Manoj Pande went on a four-day visit to Nepal. For all the warmth and friendliness that marked his engagements, Nepal did not appear keen to see its citizens, especially the Gorkhas, opting for the Agnipath scheme to join the India Army. However, the government said that though its thinking on the matter was positive, a decision would be taken only after an all-party consultation.

The week after General Pande’s visit saw Nepal’s Foreign Secretary Bharat Raj Paudyal travelling to New Delhi for two days at the invitation of Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra. The two foreign secretaries reviewed the entire spectrum of bilateral cooperation from the economic, commercial and development to culture and people-people relations.

While they were preparing for these talks, on the eve of Paudyal’s visit, China pulled off a diplomatic coup in Kathmandu: a six-point agreement between visiting Chairman of China’s National People’s Congress, Li Zhanshau, and Speaker of Nepal’s Houe of Representatives, Agni Prasad Sapkota. This is expected to provide the basis for China-Nepal cooperation in multiple sectors and moving forward on projects under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

This unprecedented agreement is significant because India remains opposed to the BRI, but that has not deterred Nepal from signing up for it.

The power play of the Asian giants in the neighbourhood is in full flow. Whether smaller countries like Sri Lanka and Nepal are getting the best of both India and China or losing out on the traditional and tested advantages of being in India’s “zone of influence” seems to be a moot question at this stage.

WION Spotlight | It’s India vs China in Nepal and Sri Lanka

With improvement in the security situation in the Kashmir Valley, the Indian Navy has revived the Naval training for National Cadets Corps (NCC) after a gap of 33 years. Over 100 cadets of the NCC attended the training on the Manasbal Lake in central Kashmir's Ganderbal district.

The first training activity has been organised for 100 senior NCC cadets, boys and girls, from all districts of the Union territory. The camp will be running till September 26 and prepare the cadets for the forthcoming national level NCC camp at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh commencing on October 2.

''I think it's a momentous occasion that after a gap of 33 years, the NCC cadets of Kashmir region are fortunate to be part of this camp which has started, and will help them train in the naval training activities very close to their homes. Before this, they had to go to Jammu. In the late 1980s, security situation turned grim and we had to shift our training areas. Now with restarting of this exercise at Manasbal, I am sure the NCC training in the valley will get a great fillip,'' said Brigadier K S Kalsi, group commander, NCC cadets.

"The Naval training camps have a number of activities, but this one is specially preparing cadets of J&K and Ladakh for the upcoming national level NCC camp at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh commencing on October 2. These cadets are being trained in boat pulling, sailing, ship modelling and signalling. All of them are very important naval training activities. I have no doubt that all the youth who are going to see these events upfront, or through the media in Kashmir will get motivated,'' added Brigadier Kalsi.

Kashmir is gifted with numerous water bodies and with Manasbal training facility, the NCC cadets of Kashmir will not require to travel to Jammu for training and this will be a big motivation for students to volunteer for NCC. The cadets were extremely happy that the camp is being organised in the valley after decades.

''This training camp has been organised in the valley after a long time, a lot of children from various colleges have come from various parts of the Union territory. I would want other children to come and be a part of these camps. We are being trained in boat pulling, swimming, sailing, and drills. The Navy officers motivate us to join the Indian Navy,'' said Ovais Rashid, a cadet.

The main reason for these cadets to volunteer for the training camps is to join the Indian armed forces like Army, Navy, and Air Force.

''It's a great opportunity for us to be a part of this camp. Due to security reasons, these camps were not held in the Kashmir valley but now they have been restarted and we will get to learn a lot. I want to join the Indian Navy and that's why I have joined NCC,'' said Kiran Chaudhary, a cadet.

In the last three decades, the training was mostly provided to these cadets at Nagrota and Mansar lake in the Jammu region due to terrorist activities, causing huge inconvenience to the cadets from Kashmir Valley.

Twitter whistleblower Peiter “Mudge” Zatko told the Senate Judiciary Committee in the United States on Tuesday that the social media company knowingly allowed India and China to add their agents to their workforce. India, China had their agents working for Twitter, says whistleblower

The disengagement process in the Gogra Heights-Hot Springs area between the armies of India and China is still ongoing, Indian Army sources said on Monday evening.

It is in the final stages and is expected to be completed very soon, they said.

The process had started on September 8 after the discussions between the two sides during the 16th round of corps commander level. Both armies were supposed to move back from their present positions towards their respective sides of the LAC and verify each others` positions after that.

The two sides have now resolved all the friction points that came up after the May 2020 aggression by the Chinese army in an attempt to alter the status quo on the LAC.

The disengagement process included the dismantling of infrastructure built by the two sides at the location where they had deployed troops and other assets. The previous locations from where they had disengaged included the Galwan area and the two banks of the Pangong lake in eastern Ladakh.Earlier, in response to a media query earlier, MEA Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said the disengagement process in the area will be completed by September 12.

India-China disengagement process ongoing at LAC, expected to be completed 'very soon'

Leaders of 15 nations will assemble in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, for the 21st Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit for two days that is scheduled to begin on September 15.

This year’s summit will be the first in-person meet after the Covid pandemic hit the world. The last summit was held in June 2019 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

What is SCO?

The SCO is primarily a geopolitical and security organisation with limited infrastructures to pursue economic integration. The group accounts for about one-third of the world’s land and exports trillions of dollars annually.

It is governed by consensus, which limits the scope of major cooperation between its member states.

It also functions more as a venue for discussion and engagement where high-level dignitaries from across the region can gather to confer, rather than an alliance like the EU, whose members have a common currency, or NATO.

The SCO was founded in June 2001 by the leaders of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Russia and China.

The genesis of the grouping can be traced back to the post-soviet era in 1996 when these countries, termed ‘Shanghai Five’, came together

Earlier, it focused on regional security to work on regional security, reduction of border troops, and terrorism.

Its particular focus has been on “conflict resolution”, which provided early successes between China and Russia, and then within the Central Asian Republics.

Structure of SCO

The organisation has two permanent bodies — the SCO Secretariat based in Beijing and the Executive Committee of the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) based in Tashkent.

The SCO Secretary-General and the Director of the Executive Committee of the SCO RATS are appointed by the Council of Heads of State for a term of three years.

But the venue of the SCO council meetings shifts between the eight members (including India and Pakistan).

Members of SCO

Apart from the above mentioned countries— Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Russia and China— India and Pakistan are also members of this organisation, both included in 2017.

The SCO also has three observer states — Afghanistan, Belarus and Mongolia — which may be inducted at a later date. And “Dialogue Partners” —Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Turkey Egypt, Qatar as well as Saudi Arabia.

New member Iran

The membership of Iran, which was also among the observer states, was approved last year by the bloc’s permanent members.

Iran’s previous bids for SCO membership were blocked because it was under United Nations sanctions, and some members, including Tajikistan, were against it due to Tehran’s perceived support for the Islamic Movement of Tajikistan.

Main goals

The main goals of the SCO, as adopted in its Charter in St. Petersburg in 2002, is: “strengthening mutual trust and neighbourliness among the member states; promoting their effective cooperation in politics, trade, economy, research and technology and culture, as well as in education, energy, transport, tourism, environmental protection, and other areas; making joint efforts to maintain and ensure peace, security and stability in the region; and moving towards the establishment of a democratic, fair and rational new international political and economic order.”

Agenda of this year’s summit

According to the press release of India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the leaders are expected to review the organisation’s activities over the past two decades and discuss the state and prospects of multilateral cooperation in the future.

Topical issues of regional and global importance are also expected to be discussed at the meeting.

SCO presidency

Uzbekistan took over the chairmanship of the organisation from Tajikistan on September 17, 2021.

Leaders of 15 nations will assemble in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, for the 21st Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit for two days that is scheduled to begin on September 15.

The genesis of the grouping can be traced back to the post-soviet era in 1996 when these countries, termed ‘Shanghai Five’, came together Earlier, it focused on regional security to work on regional security, reduction of border troops, and terrorism. Its particular focus has been on “conflict resolution”, which provided early successes between China and Russia, and then within the Central Asian Republics. Structure of SCO The organisation has two permanent bodies — the SCO Secretariat based in Beijing and the Executive Committee of the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) based in Tashkent. The SCO Secretary-General and the Director of the Executive Committee of the SCO RATS are appointed by the Council of Heads of State for a term of three years. But the venue of the SCO council meetings shifts between the eight members (including India and Pakistan). Members of SCO Apart from the above mentioned countries— Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Russia and China— India and Pakistan are also members of this organisation, both included in 2017. New member Iran The membership of Iran, which was also among the observer states, was approved last year by the bloc’s permanent members. Iran’s previous bids for SCO membership were blocked because it was under United Nations sanctions, and some members, including Tajikistan, were against it due to Tehran’s perceived support for the Islamic Movement of Tajikistan. Main goals The main goals of the SCO, as adopted in its Charter in St. Petersburg in 2002, is: “strengthening mutual trust and neighbourliness among the member states; promoting their effective cooperation in politics, trade, economy, research and technology and culture, as well as in education, energy, transport, tourism, environmental protection, and other areas; making joint efforts to maintain and ensure peace, security and stability in the region; and moving towards the establishment of a democratic, fair and rational new international political and economic order.” Agenda of this year’s summit According to the press release of India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the leaders are expected to review the organisation’s activities over the past two decades and discuss the state and prospects of multilateral cooperation in the future. Topical issues of regional and global importance are also expected to be discussed at the meeting. SCO presidency Uzbekistan took over the chairmanship of the organisation from Tajikistan on September 17, 2021. After the 2022 summit, the presidency of the SCO will be handed over to India for the next year till September 2023. New Delhi will most likely host the next SCO summit. WATCH WION LIVE HERE

What is Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and what can be expected from this year's summit?

France is set to co-sponsor a proposal by India before the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for sanctions against two terrorists belonging to the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) group. If passed, Mohiuddin Aurangzeb Alamgir and Ali Kashif Jan would be designated as global terrorists, as per reports. This comes ahead of France’s foreign minister, Catherine Colonna’s first visit to India scheduled for September 14 and 15.

Earlier this year, on April 11, the ministry of home affairs (MHA) had released two separate notifications designating Mohiuddin Aurangzeb Alamgir (alias Mujahid Bhai) and Ali Kashif Jan (alias Jan Ali Kashif), the masterminds of the Pathankot and Pulwama attacks, as terrorists under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Act (UAPA). Notably, JeM is also designated as a terrorist organisation under the UAPA Act.

According to the notification, Aurangzeb Alamgir, who is said to be a resident of Bahawalpur in Pakistan, was allegedly the key conspirator, fundraiser and infiltrating commander of the 2019 attack on the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) convoy in Pulwama. The terror attack by the JeM suicide bomber killed at least 40 CRPF personnel. Additionally, he is also a senior member of the terror outfit and responsible for routing funds collected from Pakistani nationals to Kashmir in India, the officials said. Alamgir is deemed responsible for coordinating several attacks in the Valley over the years and in the infiltration of Afghan terrorists into Jammu and Kashmir.

On the other hand, Kashif Jan is said to be the operational commander and a core planning committee member of JeM, said officials. He is a resident of Charsadda, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan, and was allegedly the handler of 2016 Pathankot Air Force Station terror attack in India. He is also under investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in several ongoing cases.

The MHA notification states that he is one of the key commanders of JeM operating out of the Sialkot sector across the Line of Control (LOC) and is responsible for recruitment and training of cadres and planning attacks on India.

However, even though India and France have moved this proposal, the duo would be designated as global terrorists only if none of the four permanent members – United States, United Kingdom, China, and Russia exercises a veto. In the past, China has blocked several such proposals by India and its allies, while other countries’ vote could swing either way.

The French foreign minister’s visit could further strengthen the relations and strategic ties between India and France. According to officials, during her visit, Colonna will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, external affairs minister Dr S Jaishankar, and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and will discuss the conflict in Ukraine, the critical situation in Taiwan, and the threat of terror and radicalization from the Af-Pak region. The minister will also discuss the Indo-Pacific, cyber security and civil nuclear power station project being set up at Jaitapur in Maharashtra.

The Jaitapur nuclear power project would be the world’s most powerful nuclear plant, said Jean-Marc Séré-Charlet, Consul General of France during an interview. The project is a collaboration between French company Electricité de France (EDF) and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL).

India, France move UNSC to declare two Pakistanis as global terrorists

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) recently announced the successful test of a supersonic 'Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator' (IAD). The IAD was indigenously designed by ISRO's lead facility, the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre(VSSC), and was realised by the Indian industry. WION spoke to Dr S. Unnikrishnan Nair, Director, VSSC, regarding the significance of this test; what went into the making, and the potential this technology holds.

Traditionally, rocket scientists think of ways and means to have their rockets travel faster and do so more efficiently. However, when it comes to performing interplanetary missions and recovering spent rocket stages(re-usability), it is crucial to slow down a rocket/spacecraft. The rocket stages that are re-entering earth's atmosphere travel at supersonic speeds and spacecraft entering other planets travel at hypersonic speeds.

The commonly used technology to slow down a descending spacecraft/rocket is the firing of a retro-rocket. Simply put, when a rocket is on the ground its engines are fired to lift it off and it functions like a typical rocket. In the case of re-entry, the rocket is travelling at high speeds owing to the energy added by its propulsion system and gravitational pull on its mass.

So, the same engines used for lift-off are fired again to slow it down to a suitable speed for landing. The IAD aims to do something similar without firing rocket engines. It just uses friction or aerodynamic drag.

"IAD is an inflatable structure made of kevlar fabric, coated with Polychloroprene. As the IAD is made of fabric, it can be packed into a small volume of 15litres and can be packed into the nosecone of RH300 rocket (which was used for the test). Once the test rocket reaches an altitude of about 84kilometre, the IAD is deployed and begins to slow down the rocket body(the component known as the payload part) as it undergoes atmospheric re-entry and finally splashes down in the sea" explained Dr Nair.

He added that the inflation of the IAD was carried out by compressed nitrogen gas stored in a gas bottle. Once the IAD falls into the sea, it is deflated by firing a pyro valve to prevent it from floating and thereby causing any harm to sea vehicles.

Notably, this is the first time that an IAD is designed specifically for spent stage recovery. The IAD has huge potential in a variety of space applications like recovery of spent stages of the rocket, landing payloads on Mars or Venus, and making space habitats for human space flight missions.

"This demonstration opens a gateway for cost effective spent stage recovery using the IAD technology. This technology can also be used in ISRO's future missions to Venus and Mars" said Dr S Somanath, Chairman ISRO, and Secretary DOS, who witnessed the successful launch.

Queried about the scalability of the IAD and the possibility of guided landings, Dr Nair said that it can be scaled up to recover even a spent rocket stage.

"It can be used to systematically decelerate a re-entering vehicle by gradually inflating the decelerator. As such, the IAD is not guided. For sea landing precise guidance is not a must. By suitably sizing the IAD, the need for a retro rocket can be avoided for spent stages of vehicle first stage, where energy of spent stage is comparatively less." said Dr Nair before adding that we are yet to do a scaled-up design.

In the next two weeks, India will be home to Cheetahs, which went extinct nearly seven decades ago.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said on Tuesday that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be arriving at Kuno National Park in the state to welcome the big cats on September 17, which also happens to be the prime minister's birthday.

The large carnivores went extinct in the country in 1952.

India is getting Cheetahs from Namibia and South Africa.

As per officials, an MoU between India and Namibia has already been signed and the one with SA is expected to be signed soon.

Ahead of the Madhya Pradesh cabinet meeting at the secretariat in its capital city Bhopal, Chouhan told his ministers that Modi will be arriving at Kuno National Park on September 17 to launch the ambitious Cheetah introduction project.

WION confirms that all arrangements for the relocation of another set of Cheetahs from South Africa are already in place but the agreement between India and SA is in its final stages pending signatures from the authorities.

As per India's Environment Ministry, Cheetahs were earlier supposed to arrive in India in August.

YV Jhala, the man representing India as in-charge of the relocation and who is overseeing the developments in Namibia presently, had earlier told WION that Cheetahs will be airlifted from Namibia and South Africa and brought to either Jaipur or Gwalior airports, in Indian states of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh respectively, considering their proximity to their new home in Kuno National Park.

Jhala, who is the Dean of Wildlife Institute of India (WII), had said the Cheetahs will be kept awake under mild tranquilization for the duration of the journey.

As per officials, Cheetahs will be brought in a chartered plane with veterinarians from South Africa and Namibia onboard and the animals will be transferred from Jaipur/Gwalior airports to Kuno via choppers.

Back up ambulances have also been arranged in case they need to be transported by road. The total travel time is expected to be around 12 hours.

According to NTCA officials, if the Cheetahs show any sign of agitation or abnormal behaviour, a sedative can be given to control them.

Tranquilizers or sedatives are injected into animals to control their anxiety, stress and agitation. It makes them drowsy and calm and sometimes even in a state of sleep depending on the dosage.

Cheetahs will undergo 30 days of quarantine at Kuno national park after undergoing the same in their host countries.

Cheetahs to arrive in India on 17 Sep: MP Chief Minister

Smaller South Asian nations, far from being meeting ground, are actually a battleground for the Asian giants—India and China.

Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar are all contested sites with both Beijing and New Delhi competing for influence in these countries. There can be no denying the geopolitics involved in bilateral relations in the region. Time was when most of the South Asian nations were conceded to be in “India’s zone of influence”. Pakistan, as China’s all-weather friend, has been the long-standing exception to this rule. Despite its tilts towards China now and then, Nepal remained bound to India by civilisational bonds; and, the reality that China can never be and do for Nepal what India is and can do. In recent years though, that bond has begun to wear thin.

In Afghanistan, a prized trophy in the Great Game of world powers, it is open season for all powers big and small and India has long ceased to be the dominant influence. In Bhutan, Myanmar and Bangladesh both India and China are engaged in expanding and strengthening their influence. Sri Lanka, too, among the South Asian nations once perceived to be almost exclusively in India’s zone of influence, is now witnessing China’s rapid rise as a counterpoint.

Other countries that could influence Colombo generally deferred to India’s primacy. China’s economic and military prowess combined with its massive investments, especially the development of ports and airports, seem to have changed that. Even India and the US together are finding it difficult to prevail against China in Sri Lanka.

This was borne out by New Delhi’s perceived hand in the Chinese ship Yuan Wang-5 being ‘stopped’ from docking at Hambantota. As it turned out, Colombo had not stopped but only shifted the dates of the ship’s visit for the same duration. If the first act rankled in Beijing, the second ruffled feathers in New Delhi.

That is the cause of the ongoing verbal spat between Beijing and New Delhi in Colombo. The Chinese ambassador’s article in a Sri Lankan media outlet found India rising to the bait and giving a “befitting response”.

Such exchanges between New Delhi and Beijing, and the underlying tensions these betray, are not doing the neighbourhood any good. India and China, as the biggest stakeholders in the region, need to recognise that their interests and South Asia’s would be better served by a purposeful partnership than such recriminations.

Wion Spotlight | China & India slug it out in Colombo

New Delhi has welcomed its staunchest friend in the neighborhood, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Most significantly, this is her third visit during the tenure of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Last such visit of Sheikh Hasina was in October 2019. This, in itself shows the importance Bangladesh attaches to its friendship with India. It is also worth mentioning that Prime Minister Modi was a notable dignitary visiting Dhaka in March this year participating in the Mujib Centenary celebrations reinforcing ties between two countries. The centenary celebrations remembered Mujibur Rahman, the father of the nation for Bangladesh.

The current visit by Sheikh Hasina assumes extraordinary importance as both the countries are likely to ink many pacts aimed at resolving issues pending for long.

Among these issues is that of the Teesta river. The Government of West Bengal has to take a call. crucially, both the countries held a meeting of the Joint Rivers Commission (JRC) to pave the way for a smooth resolution of such critical issues. Other than this, both the countries are likely to carry forward the aspects of rail and road connectivity designed to further improve the communication network.

Besides, Bangladesh is expected to highlight the issue of Rohingya repatriation to Myanmar as this massive problem has completed five years since the first batch of Rohingyas where pushed into Bangladesh by Myanmar. This remains relevant as of late, India has been holding Bangladesh’s hand on the Rohingyas’ issue and also been trying to prevail upon Myanmar to take back the Rohingyas. Other than this, India remains concerned with the apprehensions of the Bangladesh security establishment that there is a strong possibility of extreme religious indoctrination of a major segment of Rohingya population sheltered in Bangladesh.

As already flagged, the security and intelligence authorities in Bangladesh are wary that if even a miniscule percentage of Rohingyas are religiously brain washed then the ramifications of such frenzied radicalization might have cascading effects even across the long, largely porous borders adjoining India. And, any such spillover might prove disastrous to Indian security interests. Talking about security safeguards, India and Bangladesh, are already believed to have a mechanism in place for cooperation on countering terror and sharing of preventable hard intelligence. This visit might see a more meaningful and detailed discussions on this. In this regard, this must be mentioned that Bangladesh has, by and large been able to control the terror menace and after the July 1, 2016 terror incident in the Holy Artiesan Bakery in Dhaka, there has not been any major case of terror assault in Bangladesh.

However, during the sidelines of the summit in New Delhi, the Indian side, in all probability, will bring to the notice of the intermittent incidents of communal violence in Bangladesh affecting Hindu lives and property and prevailing sense of insecurity among the hapless Hindus. Incidentally, Hindus’ most sacred Durga Pooja celebrations are only weeks away and India is likely to bring to the notice of the Bangladesh for extraordinary preventive measures to protect the Hindus from any attacks of vandalism and Hindu deities and acts of sacrilege.

The Prime Ministers’ summit between the two is also likely to see strengthening of cooperation in security, infrastructure and energy sectors at an extraordinary scale. Notably, this important summit will enable both the countries to review the progress made by India and Bangladesh in various areas of collaboration of critical importance. Some knowledgeable watchers of India and Bangladesh assess Hasina’s visit will provide an opportunity to take their ties beyond their regional canvas to an Asia Pacific landscape. There is also a strong possibility of extensive discussions evolving around the Indo Pacific Economic Framework. By the time this piece hits the press, their might be inclusion of more agenda points marking a milestone move forward for a more concrete bilateral partnership between the two.

Whatever the agenda points to be discussed between the two countries, one thing looks certain that Hasina visit will bring India and Bangladesh more-closer and narrowing their differences, if any. Perhaps, this is the best kind of Indo-Bangladesh relationship ever which the world is witnessing and the summit will give an opportunity to both the countries to take care of each other’s problems and stand rock solid against all adversities. This Hasina visit will also be a signal to countries like Pakistan, Turkey and China that no matter what, both India and Bangladesh are steadfastly committed to each other and will remain so in years to come. Significantly again, Bangladesh has its general elections, in 2023 and India is poised to hold its elections, a year later in 2024. It, therefore, assumes more significance than on Hasina’s previous visits. The outcome of the visit merits a revisit to the warmth both the countries enjoy brining further thaw to their existing bonhomie. Last, but not the least, India has proved its’ friendship by standing beside Bangladesh during Covid crisis by rushing considerable vaccine stock to Dhaka and Hasina not so long-ago acknowledged India’s contribution in the Bangladesh liberation struggle of 1970-71. Do they say more to prove their friendship?

India: Two terrorists killed in ongoing Anantnag encounter in Jammu & Kashmir

Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir have inputs that Pakistan has shifted terrorist launch pads near the Line of Control (LoC) to push as many terrorists as possible into the Indian territory before the advent of the winter season. September and October have always been the peak months for the terrorists to cross over to the Kashmir region from across the border.

After the first snowfall, these mountains are fully covered with snow, making it difficult for the terrorists to cross over. And that's why before winter, Pakistan attempts to send across as many terrorists as possible.

The security forces have received input that Pakistan has shifted these terror launch pads from the earlier locations. These launch pads were at least four-five kilometres away from the LoC and now they have been shifted to half a kilometre distance from the LoC.

According to sources in security forces, these camps are perilously close to the Indian areas of Gurez, Neelam Valley, Keel, Tangdhar, Uri, Chakoti, Gulmarg, Poonch, Rajori, Sunderbani, and Nowshera sector.

The Indian army has been put on high alert after receiving these inputs. The surveillance on the LoC has been increased. Indian army is carrying out day and night patrolling whilst keeping an eye on any incursions using the latest gadgetry like drones, night vigil cameras, PTZ and thermal imaging cameras.

''We have been provided with the best and latest arms and ammunition. Also the new gadgetry due to which we are able to face any difficulty like dealing with terrorists or natural calamities. The new technology has helped us with keeping an eye on the enemy 24/7 and making sure that we don't allow anyone to cross our side. And by our vigil, we make sure the infiltrators don't get a chance to sneak in. We want to tell the citizens of our country that till the time we are securing these borders, they need not be afraid of anything," said Manoj Kumar, Naib Subedar, Indian Army.

According to information received from sources in intelligence agencies, Pakistan has shifted the active training camps in the areas of Balakot, Gadi Habibullah, Chelabandi, Shawnala, Dulai, Sansa, Kotli, Gulpur, Fagosh, and Dubli near the LoC.

Jammu and Kashmir Police DG, Dilbagh Singh had earlier said that most of the infiltration bids by terrorists from across the border have been foiled. But there have been a couple of successful bids as well. He also said that the terrorists are now sending weapons and drugs to Jammu and Kashmir with the help of drones.

In the last two weeks, there have been several infiltration bid attempts by terrorists from across the border. Around eight terrorists were gunned down in these attempts at various locations near LoC and the international border.

Reports also suggest that hundreds of rifles, pistols, and other arms and ammunition were sent from across the border with the help of drones. Security forces have recovered more than 200 pistols in the valley, which were being used for civilian killings by the terror groups.

Irfan Pathan has said that David Warner's unacceptable captaincy was one of the fundamental reasons behind the Sunrisers Hyderabad's helpless run in IPL 2021.

Sunrisers Hyderabad gave over control to Kane Williamson after enduring losses in five of their six matches under David Warner's captaincy. Notwithstanding, the move didn't yield prompt profits as the Orange Army was given a 55-run drubbing to the Rajasthan Royals.

During a conversation on Star Sports, Irfan Pathan expressed shock at Sunrises Hyderabad's lifeless shows in IPL 2021 and called attention to that David Warner's captaincy and batting are to be accused generally.

"They surprised us. They were a top-four team for me. SRH's biggest problem was David Warner's captaincy, the way he was managing the team, and the way he was batting. He was batting very cautiously," he said.

"When Kane Williamson was made the captain later, it means franchise was not happy with him, the way he was making the decisions," he added.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad executives expressed they eased David Warner of his obligations as they needed to go with an overseas all-rounder. With Jonny Bairstow and Kane Williamson in great structure, they didn't have some other alternative yet to avoid Warner with regards to their playing XI and accordingly change the skipper also.

While featuring the absence of involvement with the Sunrisers Hyderabad middle order, Irfan Pathan scrutinized the choice of not playing Kedar Jadhav in the underlying phases of the league.

WhatsApp suspended 2.4 million Indian accounts in July: Monthly report

Ahead of the 27th International Climate Conference, India has reiterated its commitment to adopt a climate-friendly and cleaner path to combat climate change.

Recently, India’s environment ministry submitted its updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) on climate change under the Paris Agreement to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) recently, in which it listed out several goals.

India has updated three out of eight NDCs. One of them is reducing emissions intensity of its GDP by 45 percent by 2030, from 2005 level.

India said that it will “put forward and further propagate a healthy and sustainable way of living based on traditions and values of conservation and moderation, including through a mass movement for ‘LIFE’– ‘Lifestyle for Environment’ as a key to combating climate change.”

The third update is to achieve about 50 per cent cumulative electric power installed capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources by 2030, with the help of transfer of technology and low-cost international finance including from Green Climate Fund (GCF).

“This update to India’s existing NDC is a step forward towards our long-term goal of reaching net-zero by 2070,” Indian government said while reaffirming its commitment to the UNFCCC and Paris Agreement on climate change.

India made the updates to the NDCs which were last submitted to the UNFCCC in 2015, for the period up to 2030.

Other NDCs include adopting a climate-friendly and a cleaner path than the one followed hitherto by others at corresponding level of economic development; creating an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tons of CO2 equivalent through additional forest and tree cover by 2030; mobilizing domestic and new and additional funds from developed countries to implement the above mitigation and adaptation actions in view of the resource required and the resource gap.

India also aims to better adapt to climate change by enhancing investments in development programmes in sectors vulnerable to climate change, particularly agriculture, water resources, Himalayan region, coastal regions, health and disaster management.

“To build capacities, create domestic framework and international architecture for quick diffusion of cutting-edge climate technology in India and for joint collaborative R&D for such future technologies,” is another NDC of India.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi had in COP26 in Glasgow announced that the country will become net zero by 2070.

Recently, former United Nations General Secretary Ban Ki-Moon had said that 2070 is too far and that India should aim to become net-zero by 2050.

Indian government says, “India’s NDC is ambitious, and it is a significant contribution towards achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement. Environmentally sustainable, low carbon initiatives are underpinning all key sectors of the Indian economy.”

UNFCCC COP27 is scheduled to be held in November this year in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

Ahead of the 27th International Climate Conference, India has reiterated its commitment to adopt a climate-friendly and cleaner path to combat climate change. India said that it will “put forward and further propagate a healthy and sustainable way of living based on traditions and values of conservation and moderation, including through a mass movement for ‘LIFE’– ‘Lifestyle for Environment’ as a key to combating climate change.” The third update is to achieve about 50 per cent cumulative electric power installed capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources by 2030, with the help of transfer of technology and low-cost international finance including from Green Climate Fund (GCF). Environmentally sustainable, low carbon initiatives are underpinning all key sectors of the Indian economy.” UNFCCC COP27 is scheduled to be held in November this year in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. INC chief Sonia Gandhi's mother Paolo Maino passes away; PM Narendra Modi offers condolences

Germany's new ambassador to India Dr Philipp Ackermann has called China claiming the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh as "outrageous" and that "infringement at border is extremely difficult and should not be accepted", in response to a WION question.

The comment come amid worsening of ties between India and China, with the latter's aggressive actions at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. For long, Beijing has been claiming India's northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh as its own, terming it 'south Tibet', something that has been regularly dismissed by New Delhi.

In his first presser since taking charge, Ambassador Ackermann pointed to the difference in 'dimensions' when it comes to Chinese aggression at the LAC in Eastern Ladakh and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

"You should also differentiate that what happens at the border with China has nothing to do with what happens in Ukraine. China doesn't hold 20 per cent of the Indian territory. China is not destroying systematically every village, every town in the area they hold. This is by dimension is completely different what we see," said Ambassador Ackermann.

Comparing the Russian invasion of Ukraine with the Nazi German invasion of Poland during the start of World War 2, Ackermann highlighted that, "..in my lifetime, I would have not thought it would have been possible", pointing, "I think Indian side very well recognizes this problem of violation of international law, basically it is also an Indian problem. You have it in your northern border, something you have been experiencing every couple of years,"

The Russian invasion of Ukraine which started in February has had a huge impact on Europe even as the refugee crisis compounds the continent's problems. Elsewhere, especially in the global south, the impact has been seen as food and fuel prices escalate.

"When we talk with the Indian side, there is an understanding..that international order must be held up and preserved," added the ambassador.

Asked about the Russian invasion of Ukraine being a European problem, Ambassador Ackermann said, "...there is a western angle to it, no doubt. There is also a very global concern, food prices are one, it is not a European problem, Senegal, Lebanon and even Ecuador. The second thing is a violation of international law, it has nothing to do with the west, it's a universal principle."

Keeping up with the changing times and batting for inclusivity, the Supreme Court of India on Monday made significant observations that expands the definition of traditional family units to include queer and unmarried relationships.

Keeping up with the changing times and batting for inclusivity, the Supreme Court of India on Monday made significant observations that expands the definition of traditional family units to include queer and unmarried relationships. "Familial relationships may take the form of domestic, unmarried partnerships or queer relationships," said the court. In most societies, the concept of 'family' is usually narrowed down to a structure where a mother, father and their children are present. The court took on this pre-conceived notion and added: "This assumption ignores both, the many circumstances which may lead to a change in one's familial structure, and the fact that many families do not conform to this expectation, to begin with." Further building upon its statement, the bench comprising of Justices DY Chandrachud and AS Bopanna asserted that atypical family units are also entitled to equal protection of the law. "A household may be a single parent household for any number of reasons, including the death of a spouse, separation, or divorce. Similarly, the guardians and caretakers (who traditionally occupy the roles of the "mother" and the "father") of children may change with remarriage, adoption, or fostering." Such atypical manifestations of the family unit are equally deserving not only of protection under law but also of the benefits available under social welfare legislation." Stating that the black letter of the law must not be followed which puts the non-conventional family structures at a disadvantage, the court observed: "The black letter of the law must not be relied upon to disadvantage families which are different from traditional ones. The same undoubtedly holds true for women who take on the role of motherhood in ways that may not find a place in the popular imagination." Read more: Justice Uday Umesh Lalit sworn in as 49th Chief Justice of India The apex court was hearing a case titled 'Deepika Singh versus Central Administrative Tribunal' where it made the aforementioned observations. Reportedly, the complainant was denied maternity leave by her employee for her biological child stating she had already availed one for taking care of her spouse's child from an earlier marriage. “The fact that the appellant’s spouse had two biological children from his first marriage would not impinge upon the entitlement of the appellant to avail maternity leave for her sole biological child,” said the bench in its judgement.
