Loved watching the Game of Thrones prequel? The House of the Dragon is now set to return with season 2 in 2024. Production on season 2 is currently underway as HBO and HBO Max content CEO Casey Bloys confirmed the same. Casey also hinted that the show will return in the summer of 2024 as he said that it won’t be eligible for the 2024 Emmy season.

He said, “My philosophy is a good script is my number one priority. I am not doing it based on wanting to have one a year, two a year. I want to do it based on the scripts that we’re excited about.”

“Remember to get ‘House of the Dragon’ following up from ‘Game of Thrones,’ we developed a lot of shows, shot a pilot, developed a bunch of scripts and we got ‘House of the Dragon’. To do that again is going to take the same amount of effort. You have to develop a lot of things, try things. You never know what’s going to work. So we’re currently doing that. I’m not opposed to any number of shows. There’s probably a natural limit to how many fans want, but I’m open to any as long as we feel really good about the scripts and the prospects for a series,” he added.

“It takes a while to get one that hits the mark,” he added. “I know George [R.R. Martin] feels the same way. You want to do one that everybody’s really proud of and excited about.” Among potential spin-offs is one featuring Kit Harrington reprising his role as Jon Snow; Bloys says there’s nothing to report on that one, but it’s still in development.

When it comes to pop culture, as in pretty much everywhere else, we are obsessed with nostalgia. That is not a bad thing. For humans' ability to remember events from decades ago has helped play a part in making us the dominant species on earth. Memories make humans, well, human. The studios in charge of our movies and even TV shows are perfectly aware of that, and this is why it has become so rare to see money being spent on so little original stuff. Entries in existing franchises and projects related to recognisable IPs do tend to get successful. And 2022 was no different. In fact, the first eight movies in the list of highest-grossing movies of the year worldwide are either sequels to popular movies or part of a well-known intellectual property.

Nostalgia, like God, works in mysterious ways. Sometimes it makes us happy, and sometimes sad. But mostly it's both. Happy because we are watching something we loved when we were younger. Sad because we can never get back to those good old days again. The word 'nostalgia' is a compound from Greek made up of 'nóstos', which means homecoming, and álgos, which means sorrow or pain.

2022 was chock-full of nostalgia. And that is not just limited to film. In TV, as well, shows that captured the discourse were big-budget iterations of previously established franchises. So what were the shows and movies that gave us our nostalgia fix, and how did they manage to do it? Let's explore nostalgia through both films and TV shows of 2022 briefly:

'Top Gun: Maverick' and 'Avatar: The Way of Water'

Not even Tom Cruise would have imagined that 'Top Gun: Maverick' would be a success big enough to left every other 2022 film in the dust. And yet, it grossed almost $1.5 billion. Directed by Joseph Kosinski and written by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie from a story by Peter Craig and Justin Marks, 'Maverick' was the sequel to the 1986 classic 'Top Gun' and brought back Cruise in the role of Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, who is now a test pilot and flight instructor. Armed with the modern technology behind the scenes, the film was pure adrenaline rush with some of the best action set pieces in quite a while.

The film is the highest-grossing movie of 2022 globally, though the other film we will discuss, 'Avatar: The Way of Water', will almost certainly dwarf it.

'Avatar: The Way of Water’, the second film in James Cameron's science-fiction franchise and the first of four sequels, features fresh adventures for Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) a paraplegic marine who sided with the Na’vi in the conflict against humans in the original and became one of the tall, lithe, and blue-hued natives himself. He and his native wife Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) have children now: three of theirs and two adopted. The stakes are higher than ever before.

As the old foes at the RDA return to complete what they started in the first film with a renewed sense of vengeance, Jake and Neytiri flee their homeland with their children to protect the Omaticaya clan.

They find themselves among the Metkayina, a water-loving Na’vi clan with a paler blue skin colour to mirror the sea. They live around a reef and have amphibious qualities, allowing them to inhabit both worlds. Initially unwilling and hostile, the leaders of the clan, Tonowari (Cliff Curtis) and Ronal (Kate Winslet) eventually take the fugitives in and teach them their aquatic ways. Unbeknown to them, the Sullys have brought the war right to their shores.

The film, not surprisingly for Cameron and the franchise, is a humongous hit, and in all likelihood will end up with more than $2 billion in worldwide box office gross—and these are conservative estimates.

This year marked the great clash between two rival fantasy TV series. Both were prequels. While HBO's 'House of the Dragon' was a prequel to the megahit 'Game of Thrones', 'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power' was set thousands of years before 'The Lord of the Rings' (both JRR Tolkien tome and Peter Jackson-directed trilogy). Unlike 'GoT, the series' contenders, unlike the War of the Five Kings, are all within the same house: the Targaryens.

'House of the Dragon' introduces Paddy Considine's tragic King Viserys Targaryen I, the reigning monarch, who is good at heart but has a quality that is otherwise noble but detrimental in a king: wanting to please everybody. If you have power over millions and enforce that position with the help of armed forces, it is inevitable that you will displease several sections of your realm. He declares as his heir his daughter and then the only surviving child Princess Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock as young Rhaenyra, with Emma D'Arcy as adult version), kicking off a chain of events that would eventually lead to the Dance of the Dragons.

After his wife dies in childbirth, the King eventually marries again to Alicent Hightower (Emily Carey as the younger version, and Olivia Cooke as the adult). She bears him children, and prodded by her conniving father Ser Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), the Hand of the King, Alicent, who was fast friends with Rhaenyra when young, grows up to be resentful of the latter's position as the future Queen of the Seven Kingdoms.

The stage is set for war, and this one is going to be especially fiery. Not metaphorically either. Both sides have dragons, and when dragons will fight, the realm will burn. The war does not really start until the finale, but the season features loads of intrigue, conspiracies, betrayals, and backstabbing to satisfy any fan who loves this world for precisely those things.

Some might say 'Game of Thrones' just ended in 2019, so 'House of the Dragon' cannot be called a nostalgia piece. And you'd think that's true, except nostalgia has no relation to how old a thing it is.

With 'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power', Amazon's aim was to do what HBO did with 'Game of Thrones'. Which is: to set a new bar for fantasy television and create a cinematic-level experience on the small screen. The last time the streaming service adapted a fantasy epic ('The Wheel of Time')... let's just say it did not work out so well. Amazon, due to the Tolkien fanboi that Jeff Bezos is, put an unheard-of $1.25 billion to bring this series into existence. Despite a few flaws, 'The Rings of Power' is a winner. The world-building is intimate and expansive at the same time. Even the newbies to the franchise should not have any problem following the events of the show. The major characters, a few of which (Galadriel and Elrond) would be familiar to the fans of the film trilogy, are all sketched with impressive detail. The production quality and filming in actual locations lend a sense of realness to a story that, ironically enough, comes under fantasy.

It gets the basics right when it comes to a Middle-earth adaptation. Even in the screeners I was provided with, with all the annoying watermarks, 'The Rings of Power' looked absolutely lush. Ironically, it is so good that even in its episodic form, it looks more suited to be viewed in cinemas than on TV. There are shots of imposing edifices and grand statues that tower over the mountains. There are also familiar vistas showcasing landscapes, hills, valleys, rivers, and faithful recreations of locations like Lindon -- every single frame looks stunning.

Will nostalgia-baiting continue?

As you probably know, nostalgia is not exactly a bad thing. But in films and shows, it is going overboard. Studios are refusing to spend a lot of money on original ideas. And franchise and popular IP projects meanwhile get $200 to $300 million as they have a ready-made audience. It can also make the film industry creatively bankrupt, since writers and directors, particularly those who are new and have little say in the matter, will force to write and direct projects that were made only because the previous projects in the franchise were successful. And that's not good.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by House of the Dragon (@houseofthedragonhbo) During her reunion with Daemon in episode 7, we saw Rhaenyra flaunting a half-up-half-down hairstyle. It featured a bun made of a braid and a loose fishtail at the end. It matched her signature hairstyle, which she rocked most of the season. View this post on Instagram A post shared by House of the Dragon (@houseofthedragonhbo) View this post on Instagram A post shared by House of the Dragon (@houseofthedragonhbo) Princess Rhaenys Targaryen was another character from the web series who always flaunted gorgeous hairstyles. Her signature style featured braids in the front that formed a half bun at back. She left the rest of her tresses open. This hairstyle kept her locks away from her face while making them look uber chic. The tight curls complemented her gowns and dresses throughout the series and reflected her youth. In the beginning, he flaunted a short and sassy sweep. Then, he opted for a coif hairstyle. And, in the end, he mostly flaunted long tresses, tied in a half ponytail.

Hairstyles from 'House of the Dragon' that are too cool to ignore

Season 1 of 'House of the Dragon' was a huge success! It had several re-castings and time jumps. But, did you know if co-creator and author George R.R. Martin had the deciding vote, he would have liked the series to start at least 40 years before Viserys was chosen as the heir to the Iron Throne? The author revealed the same in a recent interview and shared that he would've liked more time jumps and re-castings in the first season of the popular OTT series.

In a video interview with Penguin Random House, Martin said, "That [beginning] was not handed down by some muse from ancient Greece. We — myself and the other writers — had a lot of spirited discussions about where to begin that story."

He added, "I would have began it like 40 years earlier with the episode I would have called ‘The Heir and the Spare,’ in which Jaehaerys’s two sons, Aemon and Baelon, are alive. And we see the friendship, but also the rivalry, between the two sides of the great house. You know, Aemon dies accidentally when a Myrish crossbowman shoots him by accident on Tarth and then Jaehaerys has to decide who becomes the new heir. Is it the daughter of the older son who’s just died or is it the second son, who has sons of his own and is a man and she’s just a teenage girl?"

In an excited tone, Martin further shared, "You would have had 40 more years and you would have had even more time jumps and you would have even more re-castings and, yeah, I was the only one who was really enthused about that."

Owing to the massive success of its first season, 'House of the Dragon' has been renewed for a second season and according to showrunner Condal, there will be no more significant time jumps or re-castings.

In the last episode of season one, we saw the gruesome death of Prince Lucerys (played by Elliot Grihault). The boy’s tragic demise will surely heat up the cold war that Targaryens and Hightowers have been waging long before King Viserys' death. In the next season, we will get to see how Rhaenyra Targaryen will avenge her son's death.

HBO blames distribution partner as 'House of the Dragon' season finale leaks online ahead of release

Proving all naysayers wrong, 'House of the Dragon' has became a show with a similar reputation as its parent series 'Game of Thrones' — something that dominated a big part of the conversation centring around television shows. Some might say that compared head-to-head and season-to-season, 'HotD' season 1 has an edge over 'GoT' season 1. 'HotD' is set about 172 years before the events of the original show. Like the story of Jon Snow, Arya Stark, Daenerys Targaryen, and so on, 'HotD' also centres around a struggle for the Iron Throne, the seat of the monarch on the fictional continent of Westeros. But while the tussle for power in 'GoT' was between houses, in the new series it is among the Targaryens themselves.

Now, only one episode of season 1 remains to be aired. A trailer for the season finale is out. You can watch it below.

In the penultimate episode, titled 'The Green Council', King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine) finally shuffled off his mortal coil. While he had designated his daughter and only child Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy) as the heir, Queen Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) claimed he changed his mind just before dying and said their son Aegon should be the king instead. Now the Red Keep is being controlled by the Hightowers and their allies while Rhaenyra and her uncle/lover Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) sit at Dragonstone off the coast of Westeros. War beckons, and this will not be pretty since each sides has plenty of dragons.

'House of the Dragon' Season 1 finale trailer teases war and mayhem in Westeros

Many fans of the HBO fantasy show 'House of the Dragon' are complaining about a darker colour tone in the seventh and latest episode of the show, titled 'Driftmark'. While many believe it is an issue with the cinematography, it is actually to do with colour grading, which is done in post-production. So the dark tone, literally, was a deliberate creative choice on part of the director Miguel Sapochnik. Sapochnik, incidentally, faced similar criticism in the final season of 'Game of Thrones', the parent series of 'House of the Dragon'. In 'The Long Night', the eighth episode of 'GoT', the scenes of battle between the living and the dead led by whitewalkers were so dark that it was often hard to see what was going on.

'House of the Dragon' new episode receives backlash for being too dark to see. HBO says 'intentional'

Actress Milly Alcock, best known for playing the role of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in the currently airing 'Game of Thrones' spinoff, 'House of the Dragon', has shared behind-the-scenes photos from the HBO show's sets. The fifth episode of the show, titled "We Light the Way", was the last appearance of Alcock in the character. Now, Emma D'Arcy takes over the role as an adult version of Rhaenyra from the sixth episode onwards. She wrote in the caption, "I love u all I love u I love this!" You can see her Instagram post below. Emily Carey, an English actress who plays the role of Lady Alicent Hightower, reciprocated Alcock's sentiment in the comments.

She wrote, "i love love love u 🖤". Alcock, an Australian actress, has received nearly universal praise for her performance in the role. So much so that many fans of 'House of the Dragon' do not want to leave the role as they believe she is a hard act to follow. Emma clearly has her work cut out.

'House of the Dragon' actress Milly Alcock on her new-found fame: It f***ing sucks, man

In the third and latest episode of 'Game of Thrones' spinoff 'House of the Dragon', King Viserys (Paddy Considine) and his retinue went for a great hunt in the forests surrounding King's Landing. The hunting party was huge with dozens of huntsmen present in the party to lure the animal where the monarch could finish it off. This was in stark contrast to the hunting scene in the first season of 'Game of Thrones', where due to the lack of budget King Robert (Mark Addy) was accompanied only by only three others -- his younger brother Renly, Ser Barristan Selmy, and Lancel Lannister.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, George RR Martin, the author of 'A Song of Ice and Fire' fantasy series on which this franchise is based, revealed in the book titled 'Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon' that the hunting scene including King Robert was his least favourite of the entire show.

He said, "Where we really fell down in terms of the budget was my least favorite scene in the entire show, in all eight seasons: King Robert goes hunting. Four guys walking on foot through the woods carrying spears and Robert is giving Renly shit. In the book, Robert goes off hunting, we get word he was gored by a boar, and they bring him back and he dies. So I never [wrote a hunting scene]."

He added, "But I knew what a royal hunting party was like. There would have been a hundred guys. There would have been pavilions. There would have been huntsmen. There would have been dogs. There would have been horns blowing — that’s how a king goes hunting! He wouldn’t have just been walking through the woods with three of his friends holding spears hoping to meet a boar.”

Martin's criticism appears to have been addressed in the episode "Second of His Name" of 'House of the Dragon'. The scene has all the pomp one would associate with a king from a fantasy setting inspired by mediaeval Europe. How 'House of the Dragon' fixed George RR Martin's least favourite 'Game of Thrones' scene

HBO fantasy drama 'House of the Dragon' co-showrunner and director Miguel Sapochnik is stepping down from the freshly launched hit series. As per Variety, Sapochnik will continue to be credited as an executive producer on the hit prequel series, but his fellow co-showrunner Ryan Condal will now be the sole showrunner. In addition, Sapochnik has entered into a first-look deal with HBO to develop new projects with the premium cabler. Sapochnik directed multiple acclaimed episodes of 'Game of Thrones' prior to joining 'House of the Dragon' including 'Hardhome' and 'The Battle of the Bastards,' before helping to develop the prequel series. 'House of the Dragon' co-showrunner, director Miguel Sapochnik quits: 'So proud of what we accomplished'

'House of the Dragon' is the first spinoff series of HBO's massively popular fantasy drama 'Game of Thrones' to see the light of day. The series is a prequel and is set about 200 years before the events of the original show. The ensuing conflict is called Dance of the Dragons, and was a civil war between different factions among the Targaryens that saw much of the realm reduced to ruin.

Until now two episodes of the show have been aired and this scribe has seen six thanks to screeners. I do not know about you, but for me personally, 'House of the Dragon', at the time of writing this, is not only a worthy successor but a better show. Yes, it is too early to judge, but that is my impression. I explain.

'House of the Dragon' is easier to get into than 'Game of Thrones'

Even 'Game of Thrones', a TV show with a budget for small movies, had a few missteps in the beginning. Building a highly detailed world with hundreds of characters is never easy, so the writing suffered in the first season. In comparison, 'House of the Dragon' is a lot slicker. The writing, due to fewer characters, is more streamlined. Also, since we already know a lot about this world, 'HotD' does not have a lot of world-building to do either. The show is much easier to get into than its parent series. You can watch it even if you have not seen 'GoT'.

Less nudity and sex; more political intrigue

While 'Game of Thrones' was drowning in nudity and sex, 'House of the Dragon' does have its fair share, but nowhere near its parent series. One of the biggest criticisms levelled against 'GoT' was it had too much of it. It put off many of those who would have loved the show for its intrigue and characters.

The source material is already finished

'House of the Dragon' is based on 'Fire & Blood', a fictional history of the Targaryens penned by the originator of this world, George RR Martin. And there is only one giant book, not 5 tomes on which 'Game of Thrones' was based. Many believe the quality of 'Game of Thrones' significantly deteriorated in the final few seasons as it did not have the books to fall back on. It had outpaced the source material.

Direct involvement of George RR Martin

Author George RR Martin is one of the co-creators of 'House of the Dragon', the other being Ryan Condal. In comparison, he was not directly involved with 'GoT' except as a guest scriptwriter for a few episodes and occasional consultant for the showrunners. Thus, his word will carry more weight here and as the creator of this entire fictional world, he knows how best to translate these stories and characters for the screen.

No Whitewalkers

Yet. 'Game of Thrones' featured a parallel storyline set in Beyond the Wall in which the Whitewalkers were coming south from frigid wastes of extreme north to Westeros to invade and conquer. Whitewalkers were powerful beings who had once been human. They led the armies of wights or zombies -- reanimated bodies of those that the Whitewalkers killed. While many loved the show for this storyline, I was not among them. And indeed, all that buildup was for nothing when the Whitewalkers fairly easily without too many major casualties at Winterfell. And Arya Stark delivered the death blow to the Night King, not Jon Snow as many had expected. There was hardly any payoff.

'House of the Dragon' gets season 2 nod from HBO

HBO's new fantasy drama and the much-awaited spinoff of 'Game of Thrones', 'House of the Dragon', is out in the wild. And as per media reports, the premiere episode has undone everything the network has ever released. As per the New York Times, HBO said the episode, titled "The Heirs of the Dragon", clocked an incredible 10 million views across various platforms, including HBO (cable network) and HBO Max. This is more than any 'Game of Thrones' episode, even the series finale and any of the season finales. This is interesting as it means the fans are still into the franchise despite the way the original series ended.

Co-created by Ryan J. Condal and George RR Martin, the originator of the books on which the series are based, the show takes place hundreds of years before the original story. While 'House of the Dragon' also features a struggle for the Iron Throne, this one is a conflict within the Targaryen house. And this one has lots of dragons since 200 years before Robert's Rebellion, dragons had not gone extinct, but only the Targaryens had them.

'House of the Dragon' premiere creates HBO viewership record, clocks 10 million views

HBO's megahit 'Game of Thrones' may have ended with a dud last season that was poorly received by critics and audiences, but the world originally envisioned by author George RR Martin in his ongoing fantasy series 'A Song of Ice and Fire' continues in a prequel spinoff series titled 'House of the Dragon', due for release later this month. But the shadow of the final season of 'GoT' still hangs over it. Fans still cannot believe that a show that was beloved for its writing and carefully written characters became a bungled mess.

Now, Martin himself, who is one of the two co-creators of 'House of the Dragon', has said that the 'GoT' showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss did not keep him in the loop for the final four seasons. This was a stark contrast to earlier seasons in which Martin scripted several episodes and was consulted in casting choices. The reason was not just Martin getting busier with 'The Winds of Winter', but also the forthcoming sixth book in 'A Song of Ice and Fire'.

When asked why he believes he was not kept in the loop, he responded, “I don’t know — you have to ask Dan and David."

One of the reasons many think the quality of the last few seasons of 'GoT'' deteriorated was because the show got ahead of the books. Many fans have since wondered whether the books will end differently than the show. Martin has earlier teased that while in some ways the endings will be the same and in other ways, it will be different.

'House of the Dragon', co-created by Ryan J. Condal, is set two hundred years before the events of ‘Game of Thrones’ in the past of Westeros wherein the Targaryens ruled. 'House of the Dragon' first reactions: Critics call 'Game of Thrones' prequel a worthy successor

'Game of Thrones' is back in the form of prequel 'House of the Dragon' with an all-new cast who turned out on Wednesday to launch the show at a premiere in Los Angeles.

The new showrunners, who took over from David Benioff and DB Weiss, are Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik.
"There`s more wealth, there`s been a half-century of peace and really the big thing about this is it`s a story about a house divided. It`s about a single house tearing itself apart from within," said Condal.

The show begins with King Viserys Targaryen played by Paddy Considine deliberating who should be his next heir - his brother Prince Daemon (Matt Smith) or his daughter Princess Rhaenyra (Emma D`Arcy).

However, a third challenger for the throne arises. Olivia Cooke plays Alicent Hightower, Princess Rhaenyra`s lifelong friend, who marries the king after his wife dies in childbirth.

Cooke said she enjoyed the strained scenes between her and D`Arcy featured in the trailer. "It`s so fun for me because acting opposite Emma is like going toe-to-toe with (boxer) Mike Tyson. I love them so dearly and ... on screen it looks like we hate each other but I absolutely adore them."

For D'Arcy, this is her biggest role to date, and she is bracing herself for sudden fame.

"I`m really excited for the show to have an audience. What that does for me in my day-to-day, I can`t speak for but I`m really excited to see what people make of it," D'Arcy said.

Rhys Ifans, who plays Alicent's father, Ser Otto Hightower and is also the Hand of the King, said he feels positive about the show's future.

"The performances from everyone are nothing short of exquisite and now it's just a case of waiting and seeing if it resonates with the many millions of fans and new audiences"
'Game of Thrones' prequel 'House of the Dragon' takes off in Hollywood

Upcoming HBO series ‘House of the Dragon’ is the first spinoff of the network’s wildly successful fantasy show ‘Game of Thrones’ to see the light of the day. Many others are in varying stages of development, and the matter of whether they will be greenlit may depend on the success of ‘HotD’. Created by George RR Martin (the creator of this entire world) and Ryan J. Condal, the series is set two hundred years before the events of ‘Game of Thrones’ in the past of Westeros wherein the Targaryens ruled. Unlike ‘GoT’, ‘HotD’ is not based on a struggle for Iron Throne, but a struggle for the Iron Throne among Targaryens themselves.

What ‘House of the Dragon’ story is all about?

So it is a story of intra-family conflict. Emma D'Arcy plays the role of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, who wishes to rule the Seven Kingdoms, at least as Queen Regent. The reigning king is Paddy Considine’s Viserys I Targaryen, who tries hard to please everybody. Matt Smith is Prince Daemon Targaryen, Viserys’ younger brother. Also in the mix is Alicent Hightower, Olivia Cooke’s character who is Rhaenyar’s friend, but marries the king, complicating things.

What are the chances of ‘House of the Dragon’ being a success?

The series has all the ingredients for a successful series: HBO’s budget and production quality, strong creative team and cast. But the shadow that was ‘Game of Thrones’ eighth and final season is looming over it. ‘GoT’ was the biggest show in the world, until it disappeared almost completely from the public imagination soon after a truncated and frankly terrible final season.

George RR Martin takes on “toxic” ‘Game of Thrones’ fans

Martin had a few blunt words about the “toxic” fans of the original series. While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he said, “The f—-g toxic internet and these podcasts out there saying that season eight left such a bad impression that people say, ‘Oh, I’m never going to watch them again’. I don’t trust them anymore.”

Nearly everything sufficiently popular in pop culture has a section of its fandom whose entitled fans believe the stories should be written and actors should be act in the way they want, and ‘Game of Thrones’ is no exception.

Will ‘House of the Dragon’ find success like its parent series? Only time will tell. ‘House of the Dragon’ premieres in less than a month on August 21.

George RR Martin on ‘toxic’ ‘Game of Thrones’ final season backlash: ‘I don’t trust them anymore’

The first full trailer for the upcoming 'Game of Thrones' spinoff 'House of the Dragon' is here. The series is a prequel to the original HBO show and is set two centuries before the War of the Five Kings. The story is based on the originator of this world George RR Martin's book 'Fire & Blood'. As the title suggests, it tells the history of House Targaryen, which is reduced to just two members by the time 'Game of Thrones' begins -- Viserys (Harry Lloyd) and Daenerys (Emilia Clarke).

Like the parent show, 'House of the Dragon', created by Martin and Ryan Condal, is also concerned with the struggle for the Iron Throne, the spiky seat made out of melted swords on which the monarch of Westeros sits. The difference, of course, is that this time the dragons will be involved, and way more than Daenerys' three. For during the timeline of 'GoT', the dragons were thought to be extinct. As the Targaryen power waned, dragons became weaker and weaker, until they were no bigger than cats.

That was of course until Dany's firedrakes hatched, the biggest of whom, Drogon, rivalled Balerion the Black Dread, one of the biggest dragons to arrive on Westerosi shores, in terms of size.

In 'House of the Dragon', King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine) is the reigning sovereign and has a daughter Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy as adult and Milly Alcock as younger Rhaenyra) and a younger son Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith). When the times comes to designate his heir, Viserys dithers. Also involved are Lady Alicent Hightower(Olivia Cooke), Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint), his wife Princess Rhaenys Velaryon (Eve Best), among others. The loyalties are divided, but most agree a woman should not be the realm's ruler. The war begins.

'House of the Dragon' trailer: HBO series promises fiery dragon battles in an older struggle for Iron Throne

The much-anticipated 'Game of Thrones' prequel 'House of Dragon' is all set to release this August. The series has been in making for years and this time makers tried to add more people of colour as compared to the first part, which faced backlash over the lack of diversity. But amid all, Hollywood actor Steve Toussaint is talking about the bullying he faced after his GOT prequel casting was announced.

This is not the first time when any black actor is sharing the heartbreaking story of the racism he faced on social media. Steve, who is playing a lead role in the series of Lord Corlys Velaryon, a.k.a. the Sea Snake, during his interview with The Hollywood Reporter recently opened up about all the hatred he received online.

Some furious fans of the franchise just not accepted the actor of colour being cast as the lead role and were quick to react to the casting and not in a good way. “I didn’t realize [the casting] was a big deal until I was racially abused on social media,” says Toussaint. “Yeah, that shit happened. I was just like, ‘Oh wow,’ and then I thought: ‘OK, so this means a lot to some people, but I can’t allow that to bother me.'” He said.

Further adding that Martin's world is still a fantasy, he said, “it still has to reflect a world.”

House of Dragon showrunners Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik also reacted to the diversity debate and said how the world has changed from 2011 to 2022.

“We knew from the outset that we wanted to change that conversation,” Condal says. “The world changed a lot between 2011 and 2021 and [so did] what audiences expect to see on camera. The conversations Miguel and I had were: How do we create a diverse cast for House of the Dragon but still do it in a way that feels organic to the world and doesn’t feel like pandering or tokenism — and also have them not be pirates, slaves and mercenaries like you tend to see in high fantasies?”
House of the Dragon: 'Game of Thrones' prequel series starts production

Wait just got shorter for HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel, ‘House of the Dragon’.

According to latest confirmation from the network, the ‘GoT’ prequel will start filming from April, 2021. The confirmation was made during the Television Critics' Association panel.

‘House of the Dragon’ is co-created by George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal, who will act as co-showrunner alongside Miguel Sapochnik. Sapochnik directed some of the most memorable GOT episodes, including ‘The Bells,’ ‘The Long Night’ and ‘Battle of the Bastards’.

According to Deadline, HBO and HBO Max CCO Casey Bloys said, "We're thrilled with Miguel and Ryan, their collaboration and their collaboration with us, and excited to get going.”

The 10-episode series, ‘House of the Dragon’ will star British actor Paddy Considine as King Viserys Targaryen. It will tell the story of the Targaryen civil war that took place about 300 years before the events portrayed in GOT.

"Viserys was chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed the Old King, Jaehaerys Targaryen, at the Great Council at Harrenhal," the official character description for King Viserys reads. "A warm, kind, and decent man, Viserys only wishes to carry forward his grandfather's legacy, but as we've learned from Game of Thrones, good men do not necessarily make for great kings."

Last December, HBO released concept art for the new dragons featured in the series. The renderings depict one dragon's face up from up close, with dark red scales and saliva dripping from its teeth. The other photo depicts an orange dragon with spikes on its tail, wings and head.

HBO Max CCO Bloys added that the network is "talking about areas to develop, which is where this prequel came from," Deadline reported, but didn't offer much detail on potential other prequels.

"We are talking about other areas that make sense as well," he said. "George R.R. Martin's world is so big and what's interesting about it, not only is it big but he's got a lot of road maps in terms of history. So one of the great things about House of the Dragon is that's an established history that leads you to Game of Thrones the show, and there is a lot of little branches. There is a lot of opportunities and stories to tell."
