According to new research, the number and quantity of meals are more important predictors of weight gain or reduction than the interval between meals. The findings of the study were published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, an open-access, peer-reviewed journal of the American Heart Association.

According to the senior study author Wendy L. Bennett, M.D., M.P.H., an associate professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, although ‘time-restricted eating patterns’ – known as intermittent fasting – are popular, rigorously designed studies have not yet determined whether limiting the total eating window during the day helps to control weight.

This study evaluated the association between time from the first meal to the last meal with weight change. Nearly 550 adults (18 years old or older) from three health systems in Maryland and Pennsylvania with electronic health records were enrolled in the study. Participants had at least one weight and height measurement registered in the two years prior to the study’s enrollment period (Feb.-July 2019).

Overall, most participants (80%) reported they were white adults; 12% self-reported as Black adults; and about 3% self-identified as Asian adults. Most participants reported having a college education or higher; the average age was 51 years; and the average body mass index was 30.8, which is considered obese. The average follow-up time for weight recorded in the electronic health record was 6.3 years.

Participants with a higher body mass index at enrollment were more likely to be Black adults, older, have Type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure, have a lower education level, exercise less, eat fewer fruits and vegetables, have a longer duration from last mealtime to sleep and a shorter duration from first to last meal, compared to the adults who had a lower body mass index.

The research team created a mobile application, Daily24, for participants to catalogue sleeping, eating and wake-up time for each 24-hour window in real time. Emails, text messages and in-app notifications encouraged participants to use the app as much as possible during the first month and again during “power weeks” — one week per month for the six-month intervention portion of the study.

Based on the timing of sleeping and eating each day recorded in the mobile app, researchers were able to measure: the time from the first meal to the last meal each day; the time lapse from waking to the first meal; and the interval from the last meal to sleep.

They calculated an average for all data from completed days for each participant.

Meal timing was not associated with weight change during the six-year follow-up period. This includes the interval from first to last meal, from waking up to eating a first meal, from eating the last meal to going to sleep and total sleep duration.

The total daily number of large meals (estimated at more than 1,000 calories) and medium meals (estimated at 500-1,000 calories) were each associated with increased weight over the six-year follow-up, while fewer small meals (estimated at less than 500 calories) were associated with decreasing weight.

The average time from first to last meal was 11.5 hours; the average time from waking up to first meal measured 1.6 hours; the average time from last meal to sleep was four hours; and the average sleep duration was calculated at 7.5 hours.

The study did not detect an association between meal timing and weight change in a population with a wide range of body weights.

As reported by Bennett, even though prior studies have suggested intermittent fasting may improve the body’s rhythms and regulate metabolism, this study in a large group with a wide range of body weights did not detect this link. Large-scale, rigorous clinical trials of intermittent fasting on long-term weight change are extremely difficult to conduct; however, even short-term intervention studies may be valuable to help guide future recommendations.

Although the study found that meal frequency and total calorie intake were stronger risk factors for weight change than meal timing, the findings could not prove direct cause and effect, according to lead study author Di Zhao, PhD, an associate scientist in the division of cardiovascular and clinical epidemiology at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Researchers note there are limitations to the study since they did not evaluate the complex interactions of timing and frequency of eating. Additionally, since the study is observational in nature, the authors were unable to conclude cause and effect. Future studies should work toward including a more diverse population since the majority of the study’s participants were well-educated white women in the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S., the authors noted author.

Researchers also were not able to determine the intentionality of weight loss among study participants prior to their enrollment and could not rule out the additional variable of any preexisting health conditions.

According to the American Heart Association’s 2022 statistics, 40% of adults in the U.S. are obese; and the Association’s current diet and lifestyle recommendations to reduce cardiovascular disease risk include limiting overall calorie intake, eating healthy foods and increasing physical activity.

The 2017 American Heart Association scientific statement: Meal Timing and Frequency: Implications for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention did not offer a clear preference for frequent small meals or intermittent fasting. It noted that irregular patterns of total caloric intake appear to be less favourable for the maintenance of body weight and optimal cardiovascular health. And, altering meal frequency may not be useful for decreasing body weight or improving traditional cardiometabolic risk factors.

Approximately 77 million Indians have diabetes, and it is estimated that nearly 57 per cent of adults with the disease go undiagnosed. Despite how common the condition is, there are still a lot of myths around it that lead to an inadequate or incorrect understanding of diabetes and how to treat it. It's crucial to gain a thorough awareness of these little-known facts so that persons with diabetes and those who care for them can have a better understanding of the chronic illness and how to best manage their health.

Hanish Gupta, Consultant Physician and Cardiologist, Life Aid Hospital, Delhi said, "Almost three-fourths of India's diabetes population have uncontrolled blood glucose levels, and half of them show poor blood pressure control. Further, at least one-third of them have increased cholesterol and lipids. Common reasons for these metabolic abnormalities include non-adherence to treatment, infrequent doctor visits and lack of awareness of long-term consequences of poorly managed diabetes."

Here are five common myths about diabetes de-bunked:

Sugar alone causes diabetes

Fact: Diabetes is a complex condition related to several factors. These include being overweight or obese, leading a sedentary lifestyle, having an unhealthy diet, and more. It can also be related to genetic factors, such as a family history of diabetes. While people with diabetes are often advised to control their sugar intake, eating too much sugar alone does not cause diabetes.

However, still, be mindful of your sugar consumption -- moderation is key. An overall diet high in sugar can mean higher calories, which can contribute to weight gain and consequently increase your risk of diabetes. On the whole, try to opt for low glycemic index options and foods high in fibre as well, to achieve the right balance.

Diabetes can be cured

Fact: While in rare cases diabetes is reversible, in most cases, diabetes once developed, is a lifelong condition. But living with diabetes doesn't have to be scary. There are various ways to effectively manage the condition. With proper adherence to prescribed medication and dietary and lifestyle modifications, as well as monitoring of one's glucose levels, people with diabetes can live full life. By discussing with a doctor what diabetes management approach works best in individual cases, people can achieve their target glucose range and achieve optimal health.

Diabetes only affects the body's blood sugar levels

Fact: Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how the body uses blood sugar. However, diabetes can affect more than just glucose levels. Research suggests that the condition -- especially when uncontrolled -- can cause other related complications, such as increasing the risk of problems relating to the heart, eye, kidney, nerves, or feet. This makes managing diabetes in a timely manner even more important. It is also advisable for people with diabetes to get regular health check-ups and keep an eye on their broader health, to identify and address any problems promptly.

Some types of diabetes are milder than others

Fact: While diabetes has different categories, like type-1 and type-2 and gestational (while pregnant), these cannot be defined as mild or severe. Across all types of diabetes, uncontrolled cases can lead to serious, long-lasting complications. Despite this, people with diabetes can lead healthy, better lives with proper diabetes management, regardless of the type.

Diet and lifestyle changes alone can fully manage diabetes

Fact: While lowering the intake of certain foods that raise your blood glucose and adopting a healthy fitness routine are key steps to managing diabetes, this does not mean that only these steps will be adequate for all people with diabetes to fully manage their condition.

Abhijit Pednekar, Medical Affairs Director, Abbott India, commented, "Diabetes management is an ongoing process, which must be holistic and personalised. This involves adhering to dietary and lifestyle changes, prescribed medication, and regular glucose monitoring, which can collectively help individuals manage diabetes. By achieving better control over one's glucose levels, people can live healthier, fuller lives."

Understanding facts about the condition, it can make the care journey less complicated. Following medical guidance and working with doctors to understand what works best for individual situations is important, and it can empower people to better manage their diabetes.

Debunking 5 common diabetes myths

A new study has discovered details about the link between the impact of negative emotions on the brain of the elderly and pathological ageing. The findings have revealed that negative emotions, anxiety and depression can promote the onset of neurodegenerative diseases and dementia. Neuroscientists at the University of Geneva (UNIGE), Switzerland, observed the activation of the brains of young and older adults when confronted with the psychological suffering of others.

They assessed what impact psychological suffering can have on the brain and can their deleterious effects be limited. According to the study, the neuronal connections of older adults show significant emotional inertia. In other words, negative emotions modify them excessively and over a long period of time, particularly in the posterior cingulate cortex and the amygdala, two brain regions strongly involved in the management of emotions and autobiographical memory.

The findings, which appear in the journal Nature Aging, indicate that better management of these emotions could help limit neurodegeneration.

For the last two decades, neuroscientists have been looking at how the brain reacts to emotions. "We are beginning to understand what happens at the moment of perception of an emotional stimulus," explains Dr Olga Klimecki, author of the study. However, what happens afterwards still remains a mystery. The question here arises how does the brain switch from one emotion to another and how does it return to its initial state? "Does emotional variability change with age? What are the consequences for the brain of mismanagement of emotions?" said Klimecki.

Previous studies have shown that the ability to change emotions quickly is beneficial for mental health. People who are unable to regulate their emotions and remain in the same negative emotional state for a long time are at higher risk of depression.

"Our aim was to determine what cerebral trace remains after the viewing of emotional scenes, in order to evaluate the brain's reaction, and, above all, its recovery mechanisms. We focused on the older adults, in order to identify possible differences between normal and pathological ageing," says Patrik Vuilleumier, who co-directed this study.

According to the study, the scientists showed volunteers short television clips showing people in a state of emotional suffering - during a natural disaster or distress situation for example - as well as videos with neutral emotional content, in order to observe their brain activity using functional MRI.

First, the team compared a group of 27 people over 65 years of age with a group of 29 people aged around 25 years. The same experiment was then repeated with 127 older adults, the study said.

"Older people generally show a different pattern of brain activity and connectivity from younger people," said Sebastian Baez Lugo, a researcher in Patrik Vuilleumier's laboratory and the first author of this work. "This is particularly noticeable in the level of activation of the default mode network, a brain network that is highly activated in a resting state. Its activity is frequently disrupted by depression or anxiety, suggesting that it is involved in the regulation of emotions."

"In older adults, part of this network, the posterior cingulate cortex, which processes autobiographical memory, shows an increase in its connections with the amygdala, which processes important emotional stimuli. These connections are stronger in subjects with high anxiety scores, with rumination, or with negative thoughts," said Lugo.

However, older people tend to regulate their emotions better than younger people, and focus more easily on positive details, even during a negative event, the study said. But changes in connectivity between the posterior cingulate cortex and the amygdala could indicate a deviation from the normal ageing phenomenon, accentuated in people who show more anxiety, rumination and negative emotions.

The posterior cingulate cortex is one of the regions most affected by dementia, suggesting that the presence of these symptoms could increase the risk of neurodegenerative disease, the study said.

"Is it poor emotional regulation and anxiety that increases the risk of dementia or the other way around? We still don't know," said Lugo.

"Our hypothesis is that more anxious people would have no or less capacity for emotional distancing. The mechanism of emotional inertia in the context of ageing would then be explained by the fact that the brain of these people remains 'frozen' in a negative state by relating the suffering of others to their own emotional memories," added Lugo.

Managing negative emotions can help limit neurodegeneration, slow down pathological ageing: Study

A sedentary lifestyle invites many diseases. This much is fairly known. But even sitting long hours on a chair in itself causes various health problems. Now, a study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise gives us a solution for this. In this research, 11 healthy middle-aged and older adults were asked to sit in a lab for eight hours. This represented a standard workday. They were asked to sit like this over the course of five separate days.

On one of those days, participants sat for the entire eight hours with only short breaks to use the bathroom.

On the other days, the participants were asked to walk. They walked for one minute every half an hour on one day and five minutes every half an hour. The aim was to find minimum amount of exercise to offset health problems caused due to long hours of sitting on a chair.

It was found that a five-minute light walk every half-hour was the only strategy that reduced blood sugar levels substantially compared with sitting all day. In particular, five-minute walks every half-hour reduced the blood sugar spike after eating by almost 60%.

So the solution is simple. If you want to be the health hazards of sitting for longer duration, take a short walk of five minutes every half an hour.

Dread health hazards of sitting all day, take a five-minute walk every half an hour

Over the past three decades (circa 1991-2023), the death rate from cancer in the US has declined by a startling 30 per cent. This amounts to about 3.8 million lives saved since 1991, according to research that was published in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians. Even better, the studies show that the death rate from cancer decreased from 2019 to 2020 by 1.5 per cent, which contrasts sharply with other major illnesses.

Researchers have shown that cancer is not only a major issue affecting worldwide health but also the second-worst killer in the US, after heart disease. COVID-19 takes the third spot.

Decline in cancer cases: What exactly happened?

Over the course of the three decades (circa 1991-2023), researchers estimated that 2.6 million deaths in men and 1.2 million in women from cancer were averted. Men saw a 2.6 per cent annual decline in lung cancer incidence from 2015 to 2019 compared to women's 1.1 per cent yearly decline.

Young women's (20–24-year-olds) risk of developing cervical cancer has dramatically decreased, falling by 11.4 per cent between 2012 and 2019 and by a staggering 65 per cent overall within the same time frame.

Additionally, death rates for kidney cancer, melanoma, and leukemia decreased by two per cent year from 2016 to 2020.

How did the decline in cancer cases take place?

The study found that the death rate has dropped over the previous three decades as a result of a dip in smoking and advancements in cancer diagnosis and treatment.

The American Cancer Society's CEO, Karen Knudsen, told CNN that the drop in cancer mortality is "truly formidable."

“New revelations for prevention, for early detection, and for treatment have resulted in true, meaningful gains in many of the 200 diseases that we call cancer,” Knudsen added.

The first vaccination against the two strains of the human papillomavirus, according to researchers, is to credit for the drop in cervical cancer cases (which cause 70 per cent of such cancers).

The vaccination was originally permitted for use in females between the ages of 9 and 26 in 2006 by the US Food and Drug Administration, as per researchers.

“This totally follows the time when HPV vaccines were put into use,” Dr William Dahut, the society’s chief scientific officer, told CNN.

The report also stated that the first group who received these strains' immunisations are currently in their 20s.

Conclusively, these findings point to sharp future declines in HPV malignancies, the majority of which affect women.

“There are other cancers that are HPV-related – whether that’s head and neck cancers or anal cancers – so there’s optimism this will have importance beyond this,” Dahut added.

Some cancers are on the rise

The latest research points out that occurrences of breast, uterine, and prostate cancer have been "of concern" and growing in the US, despite the fact that the overall cancer mortality rate has been steadily declining.

Cancer among adults under 50 may be on the rise globally. The research states that since the middle of the 2000s, the incidence rates of breast cancer in women have been rising by roughly 0.5 per cent per year.

Incidence of uterine corpus cancer has increased around one per cent year since the mid-2000s among women 50 and older and roughly two per cent annually since at least the mid-1990s among younger women.

After two decades of reduction, the incidence rate of prostate cancer increased by three per cent year from 2014 to 2019.

What did the White House say?

White House Cancer Moonshot Coordinator Dr Danielle Carnival stated in a statement issued on Thursday that the latest study "shows great progress."

President Biden renewed the White House's "Cancer Moonshot" project last year, pledging the country to aim toward cutting the death rate from cancer by at least 50 per cent over the following 25 years.

“The report showing the US has cut cancer deaths by one-third over the last 30 years is great progress, which we’ve achieved through driving smoking rates down, improving early detection, and delivering better treatments for many cancers. It means millions of American families have been spared the immeasurable loss of a loved one,” Carnival said in a statement quoted by CNN.

“The report also underscores that there’s more work to do to save more lives,” she said. “President Biden’s vision for ending cancer as we know it is building on the progress we’ve made with an all-hands-on-deck effort to develop new ways to prevent, detect, and treat cancer – and ensure that the tools we have and those we develop along the way reach all Americans.”

Explained: How did US cancer rates drop by 33% since 1991?

Cheese, which is rich and creamy, tastes delicious on a cracker, with fresh fruit, or sprinkled on top of a bowl of chilli. The majority of Americans simply love it. The annual per capita consumption is 40 pounds, or slightly more than 1.5 ounces per day, suggests The Washington Post, an American daily newspaper. However, when people talk about their fondness for cheese, it’s often in a guilty way, as in, “Cheese is my weakness.”

“Cheese is packed with nutrients like protein, calcium and phosphorus, and can serve a healthy purpose in the diet,” said Lisa Young, an adjunct professor of nutrition at New York University, according to The Washington Post.

As per the outlet, research shows that even full-fat cheese won’t necessarily make you gain weight or give you a heart attack. It seems that cheese doesn’t raise or reduce your risk for chronic diseases, such as heart disease and Type 2 diabetes, and some studies show it might even be protective.

Good bacteria, lower saturated fat risks

It’s easy to see why people might feel conflicted about cheese. For years, the U.S. dietary guidelines have said eating low-fat dairy is best because whole-milk products, such as full-fat cheese, have saturated fat, which can raise LDL (bad) cholesterol levels, a known risk for heart disease. Cheese has also been blamed for weight gain and digestive issues such as bloating. It turns out, though, that cheese may have been misunderstood.

Yes, it’s high in calories: Some types have 100 calories or more per ounce. And it’s rich in saturated fat. So why is it okay for most people to eat it? “Cheese is more than its saturated fat content,” said Emma Feeney, an assistant professor at the Institute of Food and Health at University College Dublin who studies the effect cheese has on health.

Old-school thinking on nutrition has been focused on individual nutrients — such as fats or protein — that either promote or prevent disease. It’s not clear that this is the wrong approach, but nutrition experts are now putting more emphasis on the entire food and how its structure, nutrients, enzymes and other components interact with one another.

When milk is transformed into cheese, the process changes the way the nutrients and other components in it are chemically arranged. This has an effect on how it’s digested and processed by the body, which can lead to health effects that are different from the effects of eating the same nutrients in another form, such as butter.

In 2018, Feeney led a six-week clinical trial in which 164 people each ate an equal amount of dairy fat either in the form of butter or cheese and then switched partway through the study.

“We found that the saturated fat in cheese did not raise LDL cholesterol levels to the same degree as butter did,” she said.

Experts have varying theories about why the saturated fat in cheese is less harmful. “Some studies show that the mineral content in cheese, particularly calcium, may bind with fatty acids in the intestine and flush them out of the body,” Feeney said. Other studies suggest that fatty acids called sphingolipids in cheese may increase the activity of genes that help with the body’s breakdown of cholesterol.

When cheese is made, it gains some beneficial compounds, too. “Vitamin K can form during the fermentation process,” said Sarah Booth, director of the Vitamin K Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston. The vitamin is important for blood clotting, and bone and blood vessel health.

And as a fermented food, “both raw and pasteurized cheeses contain good bacteria that can be beneficial to the human gut microbiota,” says Adam Brock, vice president of food safety, quality and regulatory compliance for Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin. This good bacteria, found mostly in aged cheeses such as cheddar and Gouda, help break down food, synthesize vitamins, prevent bacteria that cause illness from getting a foothold, and bolster immunity.

Weight gain, lactose misunderstandings

Cheese also seems to reduce the risk of weight gain and several chronic diseases. Cheese is a concentrated source of calories. But studies suggest that you don’t need to skip the cheese to keep the scale steady. In one, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers set out to determine which foods were linked to weight gain by following 120,877 men and women in the United States for 20 years, looking at their weight every four years. The cheese wasn’t associated with either gain or loss, even for people who increased the amount of it they ate during the study.

One reason cheese may help control weight is that it may reduce appetite more than other dairy products.

Cardiovascular disease: A large meta-analysis of 15 studies published in the European Journal of Nutrition that looked at cheese’s effect on cardiovascular disease found that people eating the most (1.5 ounces per day) had a 10 per cent lower risk than those who didn’t eat any. Other analyses have found that cheese doesn’t seem to affect heart disease risk either way.

Diabetes and hypertension: Cheese and full-fat dairy also seem to be linked to a lower risk of both. In a study of more than 145,000 people in 21 countries, the researchers found that eating two daily servings of full-fat dairy or a mix of full-fat and low-fat was linked to a 24 and 11 per cent reduced risk of both conditions compared with eating none. Eating only low-fat dairy slightly raised the risk. And among people who didn’t have diabetes or hypertension at the start of the nine-year study, those who ate two servings of dairy each day were less likely to develop the diseases during the study.

Lactose intolerance: Lactose, a sugar in milk, can be difficult for some people to digest, leading to diarrhoea, bloating and other gastrointestinal symptoms. But the bacteria used to make cheese digests most of the lactose in the milk, says Jamie Png of the American Cheese Society. Much of the lactose that remains is found in the whey, which gets separated from the curds toward the end of the cheesemaking process and is drained off. If you’re sensitive to lactose, stick to hard or aged cheese such as cheddar, provolone, Parmesan, blue, Camembert and Gouda, and minimize fresh soft cheese like ricotta and cottage cheese.

How much to eat of it

Even though cheese itself doesn’t appear to have negative effects on health, how you incorporate it into your overall diet matters.

In much of the research suggesting a neutral or beneficial effect, the highest amount of cheese people ate each day, on average, was about 1.5 ounces, but in some cases, it was up to 3 ounces. (An ounce of cheese is about the size of your outstretched thumb.)

In some studies, the health benefits of cheese were found to be the greatest when it replaced a less healthful food like red or processed meats. So there’s a big difference between crumbling some blue cheese over a salad and serving up a pepperoni pizza with double cheese. “Incorporating cheese into a Mediterranean-style diet where you also include fruits, veggies, whole grains and other foods known to lower disease risk is going to be the most beneficial to your overall health,” Young said.

For those watching their sodium intake, cheese can be pretty salty. (The salt acts as a preservative.) If you’re eating about an ounce a day, it’s not a huge concern. Most types give you between 150 and 300 milligrams of sodium per ounce. (The daily value is no more than 2,300 mg.) Eat more, though, and the sodium can add up.

As per The Washington Post, the form cheese takes may also influence how it affects health. “Many of the studies on cheese and health use cheese in a nonmelted form,” Feeney said, adding, “We still don’t know how melting or cooking affects the health outcomes, for example, eating cheese on pizza or in cooked dishes like casseroles.”

Research suggests cheese might be healthier than you believed

One question that we often ask our nutritionists - what and how can we eat to age well - has been answered in a new study published by JAMA Internal Medicine on Monday. The study has found that a variety of healthy eating habits can lower the chance of premature death along with cardiovascular disease, cancer, and even respiratory illness.

After examining 36 years of health data collected from 75,230 women participating in the Nurses' Health Study and from 44,085 men in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, the researchers discovered that participants who adhered to at least one of four healthy eating patterns - the Healthy Eating Index 2015 (HEI-2015), Alternative Mediterranean Diet (AMED), Healthful Plant-based Diet Index (HPDI), and Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI) - were less likely to die prematurely or have major diseases.

All participants were free of cardiovascular disease or cancer at the beginning of the study and completed dietary questionnaires every four years. Their information was scored based on each of the four dietary pattern indexes. All share key components including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes, although other components differ across different eating patterns.

A higher score on at least one of the indexes was associated with a lower risk of premature death from all causes, and from cardiovascular disease, cancer, and respiratory disease. Higher scores on the AMED and the AHEI were associated with a lower risk of death from neurogenerative disease. The findings are consistent with the current Dietary Guidelines for America. The current DGAs (2015-2020) recommend multiple healthy eating patterns that can be adapted to individual food traditions and preferences. "It is important to evaluate adherence to DGAs-recommended eating patterns and health outcomes, including mortality, so that timely updates can be made," Hu stated. "Our findings will be valuable for the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, which is being formed to evaluate current evidence surrounding different eating patterns and health outcomes."

One question that we often ask our nutritionists - what and how can we eat to age well - has been answered in a new study published by JAMA Internal Medicine on Monday.

The results were consistent for non-Hispanic white, non-Hispanic Black, and Hispanic people. New study reveals best eating patterns to lower risk of premature death

Leqembi, a new Alzheimer's medicine is entering the market; it is the first to have conclusive proof that it can delay the mind-robbing condition by many months. Although a novel treatment that has been long overdue, several specialists are expressing concerns: The medication has certain safety issues, it is only meant for people in the early stages of their illness, and must be administered intravenously every two weeks. Even the extent to which that slight improvement will be perceptible in people's daily lives is unclear.

Still, “it’s a landmark,” said Dr. Richard Hodes, director of the National Institute on Aging, who spoke to AP. “It’s not enough, but it’s encouraging that there’s something we can do.”

Lecanemab, which will be sold under the brand name Leqembi, has been given the go-ahead by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Mechanism of the new medicine

Manufactured by the Japanese pharmaceutical company, Eisai and its American partner Biogen, the pill is designed to target and remove beta-amyloid, a sticky protein that accumulates into brain-clogging plaques and is a major indicator of Alzheimer's disease.

Dr. Sam Gandy, an Alzheimer's specialist at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, who spoke to AP highlighted that it targets a slightly different version of that amyloid, potentially explaining why it was beneficial in rigorous research while several other amyloid-targeting medications have been unsuccessful in the past.

Despite no trials ever showing it actually benefitted patients, the FDA approved a similar medicine called Aduhelm in 2021. This decision drew considerable flak from a congressional probe.

How effective is this new Alzheimer's pill?

Leqembi appeared to postpone the aggravation of early-stage patients by roughly five months in Eisai's 18-month trial of about 1,800 participants.

On a scale of 1 to 18, which assesses cognitive and functional skills, A difference of over half a point on that scale at the conclusion of the research separated individuals who received the medicine from those who received dummy versions, but their conditions did worsen.

Opinions differ on the relevance of that advantage. Families could find it challenging to determine if a loved one's deterioration has slowed, according to Dr. Gandy who spoke to AP.

Even though it's difficult to detect, other specialists contend that slowing the illness early on, while people can still work normally, is crucial.

What are the risks involved?

Leqembi, like other amyloid-targeting medications, can result in brain edoema or minor brain bleeding. 13% of drug participants in Eisai's research reported edoema, while 17% had minor brain bleeds.

The most likely explanation is that amyloid plaques frequently develop around brain nerve cells, but they can also sometimes enter blood arteries. Dr. Gandy stated that removing amyloid from certain blood arteries might weaken and make them leaky.

While the symptoms of brain bleeding and swelling may be mild, such as headaches and blurred vision, they may also be severe, and some Leqembi users have passed away while taking the drug, including two who were using blood thinners.

The deaths, according to Eisai, cannot be linked to Alzheimer's medication. The biggest danger of significant bleeding, according to Dr. Gandy, would, however, be among Leqembi users who also take blood thinners, which are frequently used by elderly people to prevent or cure strokes.

Following the infusions, patients may also have brief side effects, such as fever, chills that mimic the flu, nausea, and changes in blood pressure.

Who is eligible for this medicine?

The medication is exclusively meant for those with very early-stage Alzheimer's disease who also have the characteristic amyloid accumulation.

When prescribing Leqembi to patients who are on blood thinners, clinicians are advised by the FDA to use caution. Additionally, throughout the course of treatment, patients will be advised to undergo many brain scans.

It's uncertain how long patients should continue receiving the twice-monthly IV treatments as their condition steadily deteriorates. Longer-term follow-up with study participants is being conducted, and other studies are looking into even early usage – before those with amyloid buildup have symptoms.

When will it be available to patients?

It should be accessible by 23 January 2023, as per Eisai, but most patients will probably have to wait months to purchase it.

The reason for this is that health insurers are obliged to carefully evaluate the drug's efficacy before choosing whether to cover it, which patients should receive it, and what testing may be necessary to ensure they are suitable candidates.

The medicine is not anticipated to be covered by Medicare, which provides coverage for the majority of Alzheimer's patients, until later this year. This is because the Medicare programme for seniors only covers Alzheimer's medications that have gained complete FDA clearance, but Leqembi's permission was given expediently based on findings from earlier research. That bigger 18-month research is about to be reviewed by the FDA in expectation of final clearance later this year.

About the pricing

For a normal year of therapy, the IV medicine will cost roughly US$26,500. The majority of consumers won't spend anything close to that much if their insurance covers it, but those whose plans force them to pay for a bigger share of their prescription prices may pay thousands of dollars annually.

Explained: FDA approves new Alzheimer's medicine for early-stage patients, but what are the safety concerns?

Eating almonds daily has been found to support metabolic recovery following strenuous exercise by increasing beneficial fat by 69 per cent, according to a new study. The researchers concluded that daily consumption of almonds leads to a change in metabolism, downregulating inflammation and oxidative stress from exercise and enabling the body to recover faster.

"We conclude that almonds provide a unique and complex nutrient and polyphenol mixture that may support metabolic recovery from stressful levels of exercise," corresponding author Dr David C Nieman, a professor at the North Carolina Research Campus, said. The findings have been published in Frontiers in Nutrition.

"Almonds have high amounts of protein, healthy types of fats, vitamin E, minerals, and fibre. And the brown skin of almonds contains polyphenols that end up in the large intestine and help control inflammation and oxidative stress," said Nieman.

According to the study, a randomized controlled trial showed that female and male participants who ate 57g of almonds daily for one month had more of the beneficial fat 12,13-DiHOME (12,13-dihydroxy-9Z-octadecenoic acid) in their blood immediately after a session of intense exercise than control participants.

This molecule, a so-called oxylipin, an oxidized fat, is synthesized from linoleic acid by brown fat tissue, and has a beneficial effect on metabolic health and energy regulation, the study said.

"Here we show that volunteers who consumed 57g of almonds daily for one month before a single 'weekend warrior' exercise bout had more beneficial 12,13-DiHOME in their blood immediately after exercising than control volunteers.

"They also reported feeling less fatigue and tension, better leg-back strength, and decreased muscle damage after exercise than control volunteers," said Nieman.

Immediately after exercise, the concentration of the beneficial 12,13-DiHOME was 69 per cent higher in the blood plasma of participants in the almond group than in participants in the control group.

12,13-DiHOME is known to increase the transport of fatty acid and its uptake by skeletal muscle, with the overall effect of stimulating metabolic recovery after exercise.

The reverse pattern was found for another oxylipin, the mildly toxic 9,10-Dihydroxy-12-octadecenoic acid (9,10-diHOME), which was 40 per cent higher immediately after exercise in the blood of the control group than in the almond group.

Unlike 12,13-DiHOME, 9,10-diHOME has been shown to have negative effects on overall health and the body's recovery to exercise.

According to the research, the clinical trial involved 38 men and 26 women between the ages of 30 and 65, who didn't engage in regular weight training. Approximately half were randomized to the almond diet group, and the other half to the control group, who daily ate a calorie-matched cereal bar.

The researchers took blood and urine samples before and after the four-week period of dietary supplementation. Performance measures included a 30-second Wingate anaerobic test, a 50-metre shuttle run test, and vertical jump, bench press, and leg-back strength exercises, the study said.

Additional blood and urine samples were taken immediately after this 90-minute session of "eccentric exercise" and daily for four days afterwards, the study said.

After each blood draw, the participants filled out the 'Profile of Mood States' (POMS) questionnaire to quantify their mental state, and rated their delayed onset muscle soreness - that is, pain and stiffness felt after unaccustomed or strenuous exercise - on a 10-interval scale, the study said.

As expected, the 90-minute exercise led to an increase in the volunteers' self-reported feeling of muscle damage and muscle soreness, as well as an increased POMS score, indicating self-reported decreased vigour and increased fatigue, anxiety, and depression, the study said.

The exercise also resulted in transiently elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and MCP-1 in the blood, consistent with minor muscle damage. However, these changes in cytokines were equal in the almond and cereal bar groups, the study said. For those who exercise regularly, eating almonds each day might be the ideal new year's resolution.

What is 'Status Skin' and why everybody is talking about the beauty trend?

While getting more exercise, eating right, and making new friends are all good habits, new CU Boulder research suggests the addition of gardening can have a powerful impact. Funded by the American Cancer Society, the first-ever, randomised, controlled trial of community gardening found that those who started gardening ate more fibre and got more physical activity, two known ways to reduce the risk of cancer and chronic diseases. They also saw their levels of stress and anxiety significantly decrease.

The findings were published in the journal Lancet Planetary Health. “These findings provide concrete evidence that community gardening could play an important role in preventing cancer, chronic diseases, and mental health disorders,” said senior author Jill Litt, a professor in the Department of Environmental Studies at CU Boulder.

Filling the research gap!

Litt has spent much of her career seeking to identify affordable, scalable, and sustainable ways to reduce disease risk, especially among low-income communities. Gardening seemed an ideal place to start.

“No matter where you go, people say there’s just something about gardening that makes them feel better,” said Litt, who is also a researcher with the Barcelona Institute for Global Health.

But solid science on its benefits is hard to come by. Without evidence, it’s hard to get support for new programs, she said.

Some small observational studies have found that people who garden tend to eat more fruits and vegetables and have a healthier weight. But it has been unclear whether healthier people just tend to garden or whether gardening influences health.

Only three studies have applied the gold standard of scientific research, the randomized controlled trial, to the pastime. None have looked specifically at community gardening.

To fill the gap, Litt recruited 291 non-gardening adults, an average age of 41, from the Denver area. More than a third were Hispanic and more than half came from low-income households.

After the last spring frost, half were assigned to the community gardening group and half to a control group that was asked to wait one year to start gardening.

The gardening group received a free community garden plot, some seeds and seedlings, and an introductory gardening course through the nonprofit Denver Urban Gardens program and a study partner.

Both groups took periodic surveys about their nutritional intake and mental health, underwent body measurements, and wore activity monitors.

A fibre boost!

By fall, those in the gardening group were eating, on average, 1.4 grams more fibre per day than the control group–an increase of about 7 per cent.

The authors note that fibre exerts a profound effect on inflammatory and immune responses, influencing everything from how we metabolize food to how healthy our gut microbiome is to how susceptible we are to diabetes and certain cancers.

While doctors recommend about 25 to 38 grams of fibre per day, the average adult consumes less than 16 grams.

“An increase of one gram of fibre can have large, positive effects on health,” said co-author James Hebert, director of the University of South Carolina’s cancer prevention and control program.

The gardening group also increased their physical activity levels by about 42 minutes per week. Public health agencies recommend at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week, a recommendation only a quarter of the U.S. population meets. With just two to three visits to the community garden weekly, participants met 28 per cent of that requirement.

Study participants also saw their stress and anxiety levels decrease, with those who came into the study most stressed and anxious seeing the greatest reduction in mental health issues.

The study also confirmed that even novice gardeners can reap measurable health benefits of the pastime in their first season. As they have more experience and enjoy greater yields, Litt suspects such benefits will increase.

Blooming relationships

The study results don’t surprise Linda Appel Lipsius, executive director of Denver Urban Gardens (DUG), a 43-year-old nonprofit that helps about 18,000 people each year grow their own food in community garden plots.

“It’s transformational, even life-saving, for so many people,” Lipsius said.

Many DUG participants live in areas where access to affordable fresh fruits and vegetables is otherwise extremely limited. Some are low-income immigrants now living in apartments–having a garden plot allows them to grow food from their home country and pass on traditional recipes to their family and neighbours.

The social connection is also huge. “Even if you come to the garden looking to grow your food on your own in a quiet place, you start to look at your neighbour’s plot and share techniques and recipes, and over time relationships bloom,” said Litt, noting that while gardening alone is good for you, gardening in the community may have additional benefits. “It’s not just about the fruits and vegetables. It’s also about being in a natural space outdoors together with others.”

Litt said she hopes the findings will encourage health professionals, policymakers and land planners to look to community gardens, and other spaces that encourage people to come together in nature, as a vital part of the public health system. The evidence is clear, she added.

Gardening can help reduce cancer risk & boost mental health, new study finds

It's not about what we use but how we use certain skincare products that make a real difference! No matter how complex or easy your daytime and nighttime skincare regimes are, you will always need an expert's advice to understand what should be applied first and in what order. When applied in the correct sequence, you can reap maximum benefits from all of your products and avoid side effects or irritation.

To understand how we can layer moisturiser, toner, serum and facial oil among other products for maximum impact, we spoke to a few dermatologists and here's what they shared.

For your morning skincare routine, follow this order:

Oil-based cleanser

Water-based cleanser

Toner or astringent

Serum

Spot treatments

Eye Cream

Moisturiser

Facial oil

Sunscreen

Makeup

For your nighttime skincare routine, follow this order:

Makeup remover

Oil-based cleanser

Water-based cleanser

Exfoliator

Serum

Overnight spot treatments

Eye cream

Facial oil

Sleeping mask

Now, you must remember that you don't necessarily have to use all the products mentioned above. You can alter your routine based on your needs. If you have dry skin, then use facial oil towards the end of your routine. If you have oily skin then you can skip the step altogether.

Similarly, if you have acne and breakouts, use a spot treatment during the routine. And, if you do not have acne problems, skip the part.

Morning skincare routines are all about protection and prevention so you must not skip necessary steps such as moisturizer and sunscreen. Night routines, on the other hand, focus on repairing the damage done during the day with thicker products that can be applied at night.

Moisturiser, toner, serum: Correct order for your skincare routine, according to dermatologists

Adding 2023 to the dateline of our journals feels so surreal. And, seeing people share #NewYearNewMe posts on social media has inspired many to embrace the tradition of setting New Year's resolutions in the first week of January.

While most people are setting goals to lose weight, quit social media, refrain from drinking alcohol and sleep on time, some have decided to set easy beauty resolutions to achieve beautiful and clear skin in 2023.

If you, too, wish to inculcate good habits to deal with acne, clogging of pores and also restore the pH level of your skin, take note of the following!

To maintain your youthful glow and clear skin, you must ensure that you remove makeup as soon as you get home. Avoid sleeping with your makeup on at all costs as it can clog your pores and cause breakouts. Double cleanse is the best way to remove all the dirt, makeup and sweat from your skin.

It's not important to have a 10-step skincare routine to pamper your skin. A CTM - cleansing, toning and moisturising - routine can work wonders for your skin. Make a resolution to never miss a CTM routine before going to bed.

Dirty pillow covers can give you a bad breakout. So, make sure that you change your pillow covers every two weeks.

According to research findings published in the British Medical Journal, we must not compromise on our beauty sleep. Seven to eight hours are enough to give our skin the rest it requires.

Lastly, use sunscreen everyday to avoid premature ageing and sun damage.

Beauty resolutions to achieve clear and healthy skin in 2023

After a heavy night of binge-drinking on some alcohol, you do develop a hangover and so does your skin. Hungover skin looks dry, dehydrated, pale and sallow.

Let's see how alcohol consumption and lack of sleep affect our skin

Alcohol is a diuretic, so it dehydrates your skin making it dull and pale. Sugar in certain alcoholic drinks enables a process called glycation which leads to the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibres. Sugar can also cause a spike in androgen hormones and sebum secretion resulting in pimples.

Alcohol also results in inflammation of the skin and aggravates conditions like rosacea, psoriasis or even acne. As a pro-inflammatory, alcohol contributes to puffiness, redness and flushing. Alcohol also results in the accumulation of free radicals in the skin which make the skin look dull and dehydrated.

Lack of sleep results in stress which can increase the cortisol hormones which intern results in dark circles. It also causes the breakdown of collagen fibres leading to fine lines and dilated pores. Melatonin, also known as the sleep hormone is released while you are sleeping and it helps in skin repair. Lack of sleep will also deprive the skin of its normal repair mechanism.

Remedies:

First of all, hydrate your body by drinking 3 to 4 litres of water. Supplements of vitamin C or citrus fruits, pure lemon shots and antioxidant supplements such as glutathione help to neutralise the free radicals that accumulated due to the consumption of alcohol. Use hyaluronic acid serums to hydrate the skin.

Use Ceramide-based moisturisers to repair the barrier layer of the skin. Medicated creams such as oxymetazoline, tacrolimus or pimecrolimus are prescribed when there is excessive redness. Use a salicylic acid or azelaic acid-based serum if you have breakouts. Take probiotics to cleanse your gut.

Cosmetic procedures which are going to gain popularity in 2023

In terms of skincare, people are going to be ingredient-conscious and minimum makeup will be the trend. Hence the need to have clear, even-toned skin with smaller pores and no fine lines and no blemishes is what people will look out for.

Treatments in terms of micro needling radio frequency, platelet-rich plasma, laser toning, derma pen, and oxygeneo facials will be sought after procedures to get the above minimum makeup or no makeup look.

In terms of beauty treatments, younger females up to the age of 30 are opting for fillers and the eye to treat hollow under eyes and look fresh.

Non-surgical nose jobs with fillers and fillers injected into the lips to volumize the lips will also be popular. Botox injection to obtain a smooth Oval facial contour will also be sought after.

Younger men up to the age of 30, are opting for a more defined chin and jawline with the help of fillers.

Skin booster injections such as profhilo, volite will be popular amongst all genders and age groups from 25 to 55 as preventative measures, so that the process of collagen breakdown, wrinkles and sagging is delayed. Besides, skin boosters also keep the skin well-hydrated, radiant and supple.

Muscle firming with TESLA Former which uses Functional Magnetic Stimulation (FMS), will be the next big thing. It is a non-invasive body toning, muscle-building treatment for the butt, arms and thighs, and of course the abdomen.

Stress in the form of traumatic events, job strain, everyday stressors and discrimination, accelerates the ageing of the immune system, potentially increasing a person’s risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease and illness from infections such as COVID-19, according to a new USC study. The research, published on June 13 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), could help explain disparities in age-related health, including the unequal toll of the pandemic, and identify possible points for intervention.

“As the world’s population of older adults increases, understanding disparities in age-related health is essential. Age-related changes in the immune system play a critical role in declining health,” said lead study author Eric Klopack, a postdoctoral scholar at the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology. “This study helps clarify mechanisms involved in accelerated immune ageing.”

As people age, the immune system naturally begins a dramatic downgrade, a condition called immunosenescence. With advanced age, a person’s immune profile weakens and includes too many worn-out white blood cells circulating and too few fresh, “naive” white blood cells ready to take on new invaders.

Immune ageing is associated not only with cancer but with cardiovascular disease, increased risk of pneumonia, reduced efficacy of vaccines and organ system ageing.

But what accounts for drastic health differences in same-age adults? USC researchers decided to see if they could tease out a connection between lifetime exposure to stress — a known contributor to poor health — and declining vigour in the immune system.

They queried and cross-referenced enormous data sets from the University of Michigan’s Health and Retirement Study, a national longitudinal study of the economic, health, marital, family status, and public and private support systems of older Americans.

To calculate exposure to various forms of social stress, the researchers analyzed responses from a national sample of 5,744 adults over the age of 50. They answered a questionnaire designed to assess respondents’ experiences with social stress, including stressful life events, chronic stress, everyday discrimination and lifetime discrimination.

Blood samples from the participants were then analysed through flow cytometry, a lab technique that counts and classifies blood cells as they pass one by one in a narrow stream in front of a laser.

As expected, people with higher stress scores had older-seeming immune profiles, with lower percentages of fresh disease fighters and higher percentages of worn-out white blood cells. The association between stressful life events and fewer ready-to-respond, or naive, T cells remained strong even after controlling for education, smoking, drinking, BMI and race or ethnicity.

Some sources of stress may be impossible to control, but the researchers say there may be a workaround.

T-cells — a critical component of immunity — mature in a gland called the thymus, which sits just in front of and above the heart. As people age, the tissue in their thymus shrinks and is replaced by fatty tissue, resulting in reduced production of immune cells. Past research suggests that this process is accelerated by lifestyle factors like poor diet and low exercise, which are both associated with social stress.

Also read: Cuddle weather makes people crave love

“In this study, after statistically controlling for poor diet and low exercise, the connection between stress and accelerated immune ageing wasn’t as strong,” said Klopack. “What this means is people who experience more stress tend to have poorer diet and exercise habits, partly explaining why they have more accelerated immune ageing.”

Improving diet and exercise behaviours in older adults may help offset the immune ageing associated with stress.

Additionally, cytomegalovirus (CMV) may be a target for intervention. CMV is a common, usually asymptomatic virus in humans and is known to have a strong effect on accelerating immune ageing. Like shingles or cold sores, CMV is dormant most of the time but can flare up, especially when a person is experiencing high stress.

In this study, statistically controlling for CMV positivity also reduced the connection between stress and accelerated immune ageing. Therefore, widespread CMV vaccination could be a relatively simple and potentially powerful intervention that could reduce the immune ageing effects of stress, the researchers said.

Stress in the form of traumatic events, job strain, everyday stressors and discrimination, accelerates the ageing of the immune system, potentially increasing a person’s risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease and illness from infections such as COVID-19, according to a new USC study.

“This study helps clarify mechanisms involved in accelerated immune ageing.” As people age, the immune system naturally begins a dramatic downgrade, a condition called immunosenescence. Also read: Five actions to safeguard vision during diabetes Blood samples from the participants were then analysed through flow cytometry, a lab technique that counts and classifies blood cells as they pass one by one in a narrow stream in front of a laser. Also read: Cuddle weather makes people crave love “In this study, after statistically controlling for poor diet and low exercise, the connection between stress and accelerated immune ageing wasn’t as strong,” said Klopack. “What this means is people who experience more stress tend to have poorer diet and exercise habits, partly explaining why they have more accelerated immune ageing.” Improving diet and exercise behaviours in older adults may help offset the immune ageing associated with stress. Coronaphobia. Does it warrant attention or is it simply another fancy phrase that surfaced during the pandemic? To put an end to this debate, let's be clear: it is not fancy but is in fact extremely genuine. The coronaphobia extends beyond health concerns and includes the dread of losing a loved one or even the worry of losing a career and a life without work. Regardless of the type of COVID phobia, there are several approaches to deal with it and overcome it.

People who experience it have terrifying tales to share about how they feel. COVID undoubtedly inspired the creation of other concepts and jargon, such as epidemic learning pods, which anxious parents began setting up for their kids. Following that are social distancing, quarantine, and COVID bubble. Numerous other words, including asymptomatic, self-isolation, personal protective equipment (PPE), N95 respirator, incubation time, community spread, and COVID clusters, are often used by medical professionals. We have to be on top of everything, especially coronaphobia which concerns one's health.

What is Coronaphobia?

The genesis of the term Coronophobia took place in December 2020 almost a year after the first COVID case was detected. The researchers who helped develop the word say that coronaphobia is a new form of anxiety that is unique to COVID-19. Anyone can have anxiety when they consider getting a COVID, which can occasionally result in fatalities, and the epidemic was just that. However, there are instances when this worry turns into a serious problem, necessitating the adoption of certain coping mechanisms.

Researchers reviewed nearly 500 studies and defined coronophobia. As per the researchers, coronaphobia is as "an excessive triggered response of fear of contracting the virus causing COVID-19, leading to accompanied excessive concern over physiological symptoms, significant stress about personal and occupational loss, increased reassurance and safety seeking behaviours, and avoidance of public places and situations, causing marked impairment in daily life functioning."

What are the factors leading to coronaphobia?

Now the question that remains is what is it that triggers coronophobia. Researchers have come up with a list which includes various risk factors for coronaphobia. These include adopting new routines and avoidance behaviour, as well as the worry that can arise when you read about world leaders and celebrities who have gotten the virus. These uncertainties include if you'll catch COVID-19 or if your job is in peril. One of the other things that is seen to have caused coronophobia and its related anxiety is spending more time on social media platforms.

In a conversation with Health media portal, Lily Brown, PhD, director of the Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety at the University of Pennsylvania, said that women have reported more anxiety than men during the pandemic. Brown said that women worry about family members catching the COVID virus or inadvertently spreading the virus themselves. Brown also found that younger people tend to experience increased anxiety in comparison to elder people. The reason behind this is anxieties pertaining to their future.

How to cope with coronaphobia? Opt for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Coronaphobia can be treated with cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). One might choose between individual and group cognitive behavioural treatment in this. This therapy is useful in easing the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, depressive disorders, anxiety, and other traumas. The goal of cognitive therapy is to alter a person's erroneous thought patterns by focusing on how ideas and beliefs affect mood and behaviour. The goal of behavioural therapy is to alter unhelpful behaviour patterns by putting an emphasis on actions.

EXPLAINED: What is Coronaphobia & how to cope with it?

You probably already know how important it is to keep blood sugar levels within the recommended range if you or a loved one has diabetes. Major, long-term health issues like vision loss, heart disease, and renal disease can be avoided or delayed with proper management of blood sugar, HbA1c, cholesterol levels, and blood pressure.

Diabetes can have a serious negative impact on the eyes, which can result in blindness or visual impairment. This is due to the fact that high blood sugar can destroy the capillaries in the eye's most delicate tissues, which transmit signals to the brain and enable clear vision. A permanent loss of vision may result from this retinal damage brought on by high blood pressure.

However, there is hope. One can avoid major eye damage by monitoring and regulating blood sugar levels as per their doctor's recommendation.

The following five actions can help safeguard vision during diabetes.

Understand Numbers

When blood sugar levels rise, the delicate blood vessels that nourish the most delicate areas of the eyes are often the first to sustain damage. High blood sugar specifically harms the retina. The thin tissue that makes up around 65 per cent of the back of the eye is called the retina. Many light-sensitive cells reside there, allowing the eyes to communicate visual information to the brain via the optic nerve.

The blood vessels that supply the retina are harmed when blood sugar levels rise. Vision blurring may result from this, either temporarily or permanently. Diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and cataracts are three distinct eye conditions that are quite common in people with diabetes. Timely detection and interventions can minimize such complications. By keeping track of blood sugar levels one can reduce the risk of these sight-stealing conditions.

Stop Smoking

Every physiological system is harmed by smoking, but diabetics are particularly vulnerable. Smoking harms the veins, arteries, and capillaries in the body, aggravating diabetes-related eye damage already present. Whether you're a smoker and have tried to quit or want to quit for the first time, don't give up. Talk to your doctor about your options.

Moving It

Exercise benefits all physical systems in the same way that smoking does, so get moving! After lunch, go for a couple of laps around the block. Take a few extra steps and park at the far end of the parking lot. Regular exercise can reduce your risk of developing diabetic eye disease since it lowers blood sugar levels. Put it on your calendar each week to remind you to make time for this appointment with yourself that will improve your life. Before beginning any workout regimen, discuss it with your doctor to find out the exercises they advise.

Focus on Eating Healthily

You are what you eat, we've all been told since we were young. Healthy eating leads to healthy eyes. Eat a diet that is well-balanced and contains meals that provide your body with good nutrients to safeguard diabetic eyes. Vitamins A, C, E, beta-carotene, lutein, omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, and zeaxanthin are some of them. Consuming a diet high in leafy greens, fatty fish like salmon, tuna, or mackerel, nuts like walnuts and almonds, beans, lentils, and mushrooms will help you reach this goal. Maintaining a low glycemic diet is important to manage blood sugar levels.

Yearly Dilated Eye Examination

The finest tip is reserved for last: get a full dilated eye exam from your ophthalmologist once a year, or more frequently if advised, to make sure that your efforts to control blood sugar are aiding in maintaining the health of your eyesight. Screening for cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy may be performed at this visit. Your pupils enlarge as your eyes dilate, allowing your ophthalmologist to inspect the retina, macula, and optic nerve up close. Your doctor can identify diabetic retinopathy in its early stages long before you have any symptoms by looking at these sensitive tissues.

A concerning outbreak of 61 meningitis cases in the state of Durango this month was associated with anaesthetic procedures carried out at local clinics, according to Mexico's Public Health Department. The meningitis outbreak has resulted in at least 12 deaths with another 12 in severe condition.

“This disease was not passed from person to person,” the department said in a statement. “This is a case where the infection was (spread) directly into the central nervous system through anesthetic procedures.”

The department cited contamination as the cause of the infections but added that it was still too soon to determine if the anaesthetic medication itself or the handling of it were to blame.

“It would be speculating to attribute the cases to the bottles used or stored or applied as anesthetics to patients,” said Assistant Health Secretary Hugo López-Gatell, adding investigations were underway.

Anaesthesia linked to meningitis outbreak in Mexico; health department blames contamination

Sanitary pads may not be so hygienic after all. A new study states that most sanitary napkins sold across India contain cancer-causing contaminants. The study states that using sanitary napkins may cause cancer and even infertility among some women. The results of the study are shocking considering almost three in every four teenage women in India use sanitary napkins.

“It is shocking to find numerous harmful chemicals in commonly available sanitary products, including toxic chemicals like carcinogens, reproductive toxins, endocrine disruptors, and allergens,” said Dr Amit, one of the investigators and a programme coordinator at the environmental NGO Toxics Link which conducted the study.

The NGO is part of the International Pollutants Elimination Network and a report in India Today states that ten brands of pads were tested for the study. The samples that were tested reportedly contained traces of phthalates and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Both contaminants have the ability to form cancerous cells. Toxics Link found the presence of certain phthalates that are restricted according to European regulations.

The study also reveals that the chances of harmful chemicals being absorbed by the body are very high through sanitary pads. “As a mucous membrane, the vagina can secrete and absorb chemicals at a higher rate than the skin,” said Dr Aakanksha Mehrotra, a programme coordinator at Toxics Link who was part of this study.
A lot of conversation about menstrual hygiene centres around how one should opt for sanitary napkins instead of unhygienic protection during periods.

However, the presence of harmful chemicals, including carcinogens in sanitary pads has never been mentioned until now.

India Today report cites that according to the latest National Family Health Survey, nearly 64 per cent of women aged 15-24 years use sanitary pads in India. Demography and education also determine the usage of pads. It is inferred that a more prosperous society has a higher usage of pads.
