The new study looked at two dietary patterns: the heart-healthy Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet, which combines the Mediterranean diet with the heart-healthy Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, and the Healthy Eating Index – 2015 (HEI-2015), which is based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.&nbsp;

“We assessed how adherence to these diets was associated with children’s attentional inhibition — the ability to resist distracting stimuli — and found that only the MIND diet was positively linked with children’s performance on a task assessing attentional inhibition,” said Shelby Keye, PhD, who performed the work as a doctoral student in the Department of Kinesiology and Community Health at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and will be an assistant professor there this fall. “This suggests that the MIND diet could have the potential to improve children’s cognitive development, which is important for success in school.”

Keye will present the findings at NUTRITION 2023, the annual flagship meeting of the American Society for Nutrition held July 22-25 in Boston.

The study’s 85 participants ranged in age from 7 to 11 years old and completed a seven-day diet record from which the researchers calculated HEI-2015 and MIND diet scores. To assess attentional inhibition, participants also completed a task that requires spatial attention and executive control with their reaction time and accuracy recorded. Children with neurological disorders such as ADHD or autism were excluded from the study to reduce confounding factors.

The researchers found that MIND diet scores but not HEI-2015 scores were positively related to study participants’ accuracy on the task, meaning that study participants who better adhered to the MIND diet performed better on the task. The researchers caution that although the study shows an association, an intervention study would be necessary to make any causal inferences.

Next, the researchers would like to study the relationship between the MIND diet and attention in younger children, including preschool age and toddlers, to determine if there are any differences based on age and whether a developmental effect is involved.

This comes as countries across the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/temperatures-reach-new-highs-world-witnesses-record-breaking-heat-616853">Northern Hemisphere</a> are still reeling from soaring temperatures. “Temperatures in North America, Asia, and across North Africa and the Mediterranean will be above 40 degree&nbsp;Celsius for a prolonged number of days this week as the heatwave intensifies,” said the WMO.&nbsp;

“The Mediterranean heatwave is big but nothing like what's been through North Africa,” said Nairn, adding that it’s “developing in&nbsp;Europe at this stage.” He also went on to note how in the short term the recently <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/un-declares-onset-of-el-nino-says-itll-break-temperature-records-611836">officially declared</a> El Nino weather pattern, “is only expected to amplify the occurrence and intensity of extreme heat events.”&nbsp;

However, the concerning part is the&nbsp;number of simultaneous heatwaves in the Northern Hemisphere which has increased six-fold since the 1980s and not showing any signs of slowing down, said the UN expert.&nbsp;

According to the WMO official, while we are focusing on the maximum day temperatures, it is the high overnight minimum temperatures that we should be worried about as they have the “biggest health risks”, particularly for vulnerable populations.&nbsp;

“Repeated high night-time temperatures are particularly dangerous for human health because the body is unable to recover from sustained heat,” said Nairn. He added, “This leads to increased cases of heart attacks and death.”&nbsp;

Notably, there is no clear definition of what constitutes a heatwave but the UN weather agency said they are in the midst of coming up with a developing one to “standardise impact forecasts and warnings worldwide”.&nbsp;

A study published&nbsp;on Monday&nbsp;in the journal Nature Medicine found that Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain saw the highest number of deaths, according to population size, when Europe was hit by the sweltering heatwaves last summer.&nbsp;

It also estimated that more than 61,600 people may have died from heat-related causes across 35 European countries between late May to early September 2022, suggesting that the countries’ heat preparedness efforts fell fatally short. Therefore, the researchers have called for urgent measures.&nbsp;

According to the world weather body, the heatwave is in its early phases, and it is expected that mercury might hit above 40 degree Celsius in north America, Asia, north Africa and the Mediterranean.

Prolonged heatwave may lead to heart attacks

Before the late 20th century, heart disease-related deaths were more common among men due to biological and lifestyle differences, such as higher smoking rates and alcohol consumption. Today, both men and women have similar rates of death from heart disease, including heart attacks.

Both men and women may experience heart attacks due to various causes, including coronary artery disease, plaque rupture, blood clots, and spasms in the coronary arteries. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common cause of heart attacks in both men and women. CAD involves the build-up of plaque in the arteries that supply the heart with blood, leading to narrowing and potential blockages. When a blockage occurs, it can cause a heart attack.

Women with CAD have higher mortality rates and face more challenges in their health outcomes after heart attacks. Unfortunately, there is often an underestimation of cardiovascular disease risk in women, with a mistaken belief that they are more "protected" against CAD and heart attacks.

Recent research presented at a scientific congress of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) highlighted that women are more than twice as likely to die after a CAD-caused heart attack compared to men.

To get an expert opinion on&nbsp;the research, WION spoke to&nbsp;Dr Saritha Sekhar, Associate Professor and Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Amrita Hospital&nbsp;Kochi. The medical expert emphasised the urgent need to address gender disparities in cardiovascular care and outcomes related to CAD and heart attacks. Women face unique risk factors for coronary artery disease (CAD) compared to men, according to the medical expert. In addition to common risk factors like diabetes, smoking, and high blood pressure, women may have specific factors affecting their heart health, such as hormonal changes, autoimmune diseases, and pregnancy complications. Obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol are shared risk factors for both genders, but certain factors may have a greater impact on women's heart health.

1.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;High Blood Pressure: High blood pressure is a significant risk factor for heart disease. The prevalence of high blood pressure is similar for men and women until around 45 years of age. However, after 65 years of age, women tend to have higher rates of hypertension than men. Factors unique to women, such as gestational hypertension and preeclampsia during pregnancy, can increase the risk of high blood pressure in the long term. Hormonal factors like hormone replacement therapy and oral contraceptives can also affect blood pressure in women. In summary, while high blood pressure can affect both men and women, there are differences in prevalence and risk factors depending on age and specific situations. Women with high blood pressure during pregnancy have a twofold higher risk of developing heart disease later in life compared to women without this condition.

However, during their reproductive years, women are somewhat protected from atherosclerosis due to the positive effect of estrogen on the cardiovascular system. However, postmenopausal women experience a notable increase in the incidence of stroke, and women over the age of 75 have a higher prevalence of hypertension compared to men.

4.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Emotional Stress and Depression: Stress and depression have a more pronounced effect on women's hearts as compared to men. Depression can make it challenging to maintain a healthy lifestyle and adhere to treatment for other health conditions.

They can damage the heart and blood vessels, leading to atherosclerosis or plaque buildup in the arteries. Smoking raises the heart rate and blood pressure, reduces oxygen supply, promotes blood clotting, lowers good cholesterol (HDL), increases bad cholesterol (LDL), reduces tolerance for physical activity, and significantly increases the risk of heart disease. Some studies suggest that women who smoke may have a higher relative risk of developing heart disease compared to men who smoke. Alcohol can affect heart rhythm, raise blood pressure and triglyceride levels, weaken the heart muscle, and interact with other risk factors to increase the risk of heart disease. Excessive drinking can harm the heart and increase the risk of a heart attack.

Nausea, vomiting, and shortness of breath are more common in women, while chest pain may be less severe compared to men. Symptoms like shortness of breath, fatigue, palpitations, or pain in the neck, jaw, throat, upper abdomen, or back may indicate heart disease in women."

To get an answer to this pressing question, WION spoke to&nbsp;Dr Mohit Tandon, Consultant Non-Invasive Cardiologist at Fortis Escorts Hospital. He said, "To understand how harmful are e-cigarettes as compared to traditional cigarettes, we must first&nbsp;examine their key components and their potential effects on the cardiovascular system."

For instance, research has indicated that e-cigarette aerosols contain harmful substances such as volatile organic compounds, heavy metals, and fine particulate matter. Given the well-established detrimental effects of traditional cigarettes on heart health, this raises concerns about the long-term impact of e-cigarette use on cardiovascular outcomes.

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) increases the risk of TB disease two-to three-fold, according to recent studies and experts. This association may be even stronger in the presence of other risk factors, such as HIV infection or smoking. There is strong evidence that shows that an increased risk of tuberculosis occurs in both type 1 DM and type 2 DM.&nbsp;

In a conversation with&nbsp;WION, Dr Rahul Kendre, Consultant Lung Transplant Surgeon at&nbsp;DPU Private Super Speciality Hospital, said that DM is an important risk factor for Multi-Drug Resistant TB.

"Diabetes causes increased susceptibility to tuberculosis through several mechanisms, including hyperglycemia and cellular insulinopenia, which have indirect effects on macrophage and lymphocyte function and so our cell-mediated immunity is suppressed allowing flare up of latent tuberculosis into active tubercular disease,"&nbsp;Dr Rahul added.

Further clarifying the connection between the two diseases, the medical expert continued, "TB per se does not cause DM although it may unmask those at risk of DM in the future. TB is associated with glucose intolerance and hyperglycaemia, both of which resolve automatically with TB treatment. In some studies, up to 50 per cent of TB patients who have high blood glucose levels at the time of diagnosis have normal levels by the end of TB treatment. TB also impairs glycaemic control among patients with previously known DM requiring higher insulin doses and oral hypoglycemic medications."

Approximately 15 per cent&nbsp;of tuberculosis cases worldwide might be linked to DM. The reported prevalence of tuberculosis among DM patients ranges from 0.38 per cent to 14 per cent, and the overall median prevalence is reported to be 4.1 per cent.

One study of DM patients showed that the risk of active tuberculosis was three times greater among those with a haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level greater than or equal to 7 per cent than among those with an HbA1c level lesser than 7 per cent.

In addition, insulin dependence is purported to be a risk factor for tuberculosis. In the Philadelphia Diabetic Survey, the likelihood of developing tuberculosis was found to be twice as high among patients with DM using more than 40 units of insulin per day than among those using lower doses.

Symptoms of TB disease depend on where in the body the TB bacteria are growing. TB bacteria usually grow in the lungs (pulmonary TB).

TB disease in the lungs may cause symptoms such as a bad cough that lasts 3 weeks or longer, pain in the chest, and coughing up blood with sputum (phlegm from deep inside the lungs).

Other symptoms of TB include weakness or fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, low-grade fever in the evenings and sweating at night.

"Active TB disease may present atypically with altered symptoms and signs in those with DM and TB may progress faster for them. The effects of DM on chest radiograph findings are inconsistent. Some studies have described more frequent isolated lower lung field lesions and an increase in consolidation and cavities in Pulmonary TB in patients with DM, sometimes mimicking the pattern of radiographic TB seen in HIV,"&nbsp;Dr Rahul concluded.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced that the fees and health surcharge paid by visa applicants, including Indians, towards the UK's National Health Service (NHS), which is funded by the state, will significantly rise. This increase aims to meet the country's public sector wage increase.

Sunak confirmed a hike of 5 to 7 percent across various public sectors, such as for teachers, police, and junior doctors. However, he emphasised that the government would not borrow more money or increase taxes to fund these raises due to concerns about inflation.

"If we're going to prioritise paying public sector workers more, that money has to come from somewhere else because I'm not prepared to put up people's taxes and I don't think it would be responsible or right to borrow more because that would just make inflation worse," Sunak told reporters at a Downing Street press conference.

"So, what we have done are two things to find this money. The first is, we are going to increase the charges that we have for migrants who are coming to this country when they apply for visas and indeed something called the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), which is the levy that they pay to access the NHS," he said.

"All of those fees are going to go up and that will raise over GBP 1 billion, so across the board visa application fees are going to go up significantly and similarly for the IHS."&nbsp;

As a second measure to cover the higher wage bill, government departments will be asked to reprioritise their spending.&nbsp;This does not entail job cuts or reductions in services but rather a shift in focus towards different priorities, Sunk said.&nbsp;

"JECFA’s risk assessments determine the probability of a specific type of harm, i.e. cancer, to occur under certain conditions and levels of exposure," WHO added.&nbsp;

<h2>No reason to change acceptable daily intake</h2>

JECFA concluded that the available data did not provide sufficient reason to change the previously established acceptable daily intake (ADI) of 0-40 mg/kg body weight for aspartame.&nbsp;

"The committee therefore reaffirmed that it is safe for a person to consume within this limit per day. For example, with a can of diet soft drink containing 200 or 300 mg of aspartame, an adult weighing 70kg would need to consume more than 9–14 cans per day to exceed the acceptable daily intake, assuming no other intake from other food sources," the statement read.&nbsp;

It's both physically and emotionally devastating to learn about your partner's infidelity.&nbsp;The psychological and emotional distress experienced by individuals during these hard times is what some mental health professionals call Post-Infidelity Stress Disorder (PISD).

Coined by Ortman in 2005, PISD is a term used by some researchers and therapists to describe the&nbsp;type of anxiety disorder some experience after finding out that a loved one has been unfaithful to them.&nbsp;It is, however, not officially recognised as a distinct disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) or other diagnostic manuals.

In a conversation with WION, Dr Ruhi Satija, consultant psychiatrist, therapist, &amp; mind transformation mentor, shared some of PISD's common symptoms.&nbsp;

You can speak to your psychologist or therapist and book a counselling session. You can also look for support groups or seek help from a friend or family member.

"Recovery requires conscious effort from the individual. It is important to recognise unhealthy coping behaviours and avoid getting stuck in a loop of unhelpful behaviours. Research emphasises the importance of seeking professional help, such as therapy or counselling, to facilitate the recovery process after infidelity. Therapy can assist individuals in processing emotions, rebuilding trust, and developing effective coping strategies," says&nbsp;Dr Ruhi.&nbsp;
