Solbakken's counterpart Thomas Tuchel was recruited by the English Football Association to get a talented generation of players over the line after a series of narrow misses at major tournaments under his predecessor Gareth Southgate.By contrast, Norway are in their first major tournament of any kind for 26 years and have exceeded expectations, most notably in stunning 2-1 win against Brazil thanks to Haaland's late double in the last 16."Every game has been the most important (in history) for Norwegian football, especially in the knockout rounds, so this is the third time it is the most important game," added Solbakken. "I feel the players are in a relaxed but competitive mood."I think England has more pressure than us, but we also put pressure on our performance. When the game has started I don't think the players think so much about the pressure when it's eleven versus eleven."Norway's progress has caught the imagination at home and across the Atlantic in the United States.Their fans' Viking row celebration has become one of the iconic images of the tournament, while Haaland's status as a global star has soared thanks to his goalscoring prowess on the pitch and jovial personality off it."I think the whole of Norway is looking forward to tomorrow. We've had some great nights in this World Cup before and it brings the country together," said Solbakken."Maybe this will never come back to Norway because I think we will qualify more. Every time (now) we have a possibility to go through to a European Championship or a World Cup. But now it's 26 years since we had it last time."The match in south Florida could be impacted by brutal heat and humidity that is forecast around the 5:00 pm local time (2100 GMT) kick-off.Miami is currently under a heat advisory from the US National Weather Service with "feels like" temperatures rising beyond 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit)."We have trained very lightly. We haven't done much hard work. We are with the tactical sessions, but in a lower tempo and not trained for long periods. So it's all about being fresh tomorrow," said Solbakken, whose side have trained in Miami for the past three days. The two countries, he said, would have to get “used to the same conditions.”

FIFA 2026 | 'It is Haaland vs Kane,' says Norway coach Stale Solbakken ahead of QF

We are in the midst of perhaps the greatest World Cup Golden Boot race of all time. Just a few weeks into this showpiece event in North America, the top global stars are fighting for that one prize that separates them from the rest. Be it Kylian Mbappé from France, Argentina’s icon Lionel Messi, England captain and star striker Harry Kane, or talismanic Norwegian attacker Erling Haaland, all lead the race for the most goals in the 2026 World Cup. Those seeking Cristiano Ronaldo's name must wait as the legendary goal-scorer is yet to shine in this tournament.
Kane cuts gap with Mbappé, Messi
England striker Harry Kane is having perhaps his greatest season as a professional footballer, having already amassed over 70 goals for his club and country combined. Earlier, sitting behind several top names with just three goals in as many outings in the group stages, Kane scored a brace against DR Congo in England's Round of 32 match, and not only did it help them beat their African opponents and qualify for the Round of 16, but it also helped equal Haaland's tally (5) for most goals in four matches -- one shy of the top spot attained by Mbappé (six) and Messi (seven). Kane now has 13 World Cup goals, five shy of Mbappé’s overall tally thus far (18 and counting) and seven of Messi’s record of 20 World Cup goals.
From where it all began
Messi, however, started with a goal-scoring spree in this edition, clobbering six in his first three matches, including his maiden World Cup hat-trick in Argentina’s opener against Algeria. He added a brace to it against Austria before scoring his last against Jordan in the last group stage game. Against Cape Verde in Argentina’s Round of 32 match, Messi was again on the scoresheet, while also assisting one in his team’s tense 3-2 win over the World Cup debutants. Also read| ‘Messi hugged me said…,’ Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha reveals chat with Argentine superstar

Meanwhile, the French striker Mbappé is having a ball at this edition. In four matches, he has scored six goals and assisted twice. He, however, is not the only French player to make headlines as his fellow winger Ousmane Dembele and attacking playmaker Michael Olise are turning heads too. While Dembele is not far behind in goals, having netted four, including a first-half hat-trick against Norway, Olise has assisted five times in four matches.
Keep an eye on Haaland and Ronaldo
Haaland, on the other hand, has scored five goals in his debut World Cup, that too in only three matches. He is tied with Kane and just one shot from equalling the six-goal tally. Against Brazil, he might do that. And well, at the end, the one name remains, perhaps the greatest goal scorer of all time, Portugal’s talisman Cristiano Ronaldo. In three matches so far, he has found the net just twice, two behind Vinicius Jr from Brazil, who shall also not be forgotten. With the tournament entering the business end, only time will decide who stands tall.

FIFA 2026 | Harry Kane breaks World Cup record for most penalty goals

Harry Kane has revealed that a powerful half-time message from Thomas Tuchel inspired England’s comeback performance in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. England endured a difficult first half against Croatia despite Kane matching Gary Lineker’s World Cup scoring record for England. Kane scored from the penalty spot before adding a second goal from Declan Rice’s corner, but Croatia responded twice before the break to leave the match level. Tuchel’s words at half-time helped transform England’s display after the restart. Jude Bellingham restored England’s lead before substitute Marcus Rashford sealed the victory late on. “He told us to take the shackles off, calm down and let’s go. He said what’s the worst that can happen? Show the world who we can be,” said Kane of Tuchel’s speech. “We came out in the second half full gas and they couldn’t live with it, and that’s the level we have to set in every game. The way we controlled the game once we went ahead, we never really looked like we were in danger and then scored on the counterattack. We had a spell where we could have scored three or four. Credit to everyone: the first game of the tournament and a great result against a tough side.” Also Read: FIFA 2026 | 'A performance to be proud of': PM Starmer praises England after Croatia win Bellingham also highlighted the impact of Tuchel’s calm approach during the interval. “It wasn’t one of those where it was a big drama or standing up and shouting; it was what the team needed. We have a mature group with great leaders in there; everyone knew the level we had to get to. The start of the second half gave us a great platform.” England faced a concern when Declan Rice was substituted in the second half as a precaution. Tuchel later explained that the midfielder had experienced discomfort in his lower back and upper hamstring. “He feels discomfort. And I didn’t want to take any risks. So if I take Declan off, which I never wanted to do,” said Tuchel. “But it was the moment to protect him. I hope it’s nothing more. Declan just reassured me at the end. ‘It’s good, it’s good.’ I know the discomfort and we will take care of it.”

Tuchel admitted that England showed signs of nervousness despite twice taking the lead and believes the experience will help his players as the tournament progresses. “Sometimes if you want to get it so perfectly right, you sometimes want it too much and you overthink it,” he said. “In the end, in doubt, we took the decision to go backwards, on and off the ball. We played way too many [passes] backwards, we played way too many back to our goalkeeper. It took us a while to find our confidence. That’s why I said maybe it’s also normal. I had the hope that the goals would help us. It was not the case.” Speaking further on his half-time team talk, Tuchel explained his message focused on confidence and bravery. “I told them to calm down. We just conceded the goal. To calm down, calm their nerves. And encourage them to do it our way. I told them that my perception of them in the last 17 days will not change no matter what the result is. I want them to do it their way. Our way. I want them to be brave, courageous and tenacious on the front foot. And just go for it.” https://www.wionews.com/videos/fifa-world-cup-2026-mexico-s-unique-tradition-baby-jesus-dons-mexico-jersey-1781772131358/embed

Dortmund were unbeaten for a while and we were too," Kane, who scored his 104th goal for the champions, told reporters. "We have to keep getting those wins. We're doing that well so far." Defeat left Dortmund fourth, seven points adrift of Bayern. Bayern coach Vincent Kompany named Kane in the number 10 role behind Chelsea loanee Nicolas Jackson, who made his third start for his new club. Kane took no time to show his creative chops, threading passes for wingers Luis Diaz and Michael Olise, who both had great chances inside the opening 10 minutes. Kane then nodded Bayern in front with a typical poacher's goal from a corner on 21 minutes to notch up his 400th goal at club level. The forward now has 19 goals in 11 games in all competitions this season for Bayern, including 12 in the league. After the one-way traffic of the opening period, Dortmund were better in the second half and should have drawn level when Serhou Guirassy pounced on a Bayern error and teed up Karim Adeyemi, who slipped while trying to shoot. Kane said he spoke to compatriot Bellingham about the error, telling him: "'Keep doing what you're doing'. "He's a great player with a lot of potential," the England captain added of the 20-year-old. Dortmund pulled one back through Julian Brandt, who got a boot to a dangerous Julian Ryerson cross in the 84th minute, but the visitors could not make their late pressure count. I've said before how happy I am at Bayern.” Grimaldo at the double Alex Grimaldo scored twice as Bayer Leverkusen won 4-3 at Mainz, extending their unbeaten streak to eight games as they prepare for a European clash with reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain. The win sent Leverkusen to fifth in the table, level on points with Dortmund. Grimaldo's spot-kick put Leverkusen in front on 11 minutes and Christian Kofane doubled the visitors' lead midway through the first half, finishing off a clever team move with a low shot into the bottom right corner. Leverkusen gave away a soft goal on the 34-minute mark when Loic Bade's clearance hit his own player, allowing Lee Jae-sung to score. Just before half-time, Leverkusen pressed Mainz into an error and Jonas Hofmann, who won the penalty, found Grimaldo in the box for a tap-in, his sixth goal in 10 games in all competitions. Martin Terrier's strike three minutes from time had put Leverkusen 4-2 up but Mainz's Armindo Sieb scored shortly afterwards to set up a nervy ending. Leverkusen, who have scored first in each of their seven matches this season, eventually hung on. "After a bumpy start to the season, we've started picking up a few points," Hofmann told Sky. "We want to build on that and find our footing with our coach (Kasper Hjulmand), who's still new." Dane Hjulmand replaced the sacked Erik ten Hag in early September. RB Leipzig won 2-1 at home against promoted Hamburg, with Christoph Baumgartner scoring both goals for the hosts either side of a strike from Albert Sambi Lokonga. Leipzig were thumped 6-0 in their season opener at Bayern but have recovered impressively with five wins and a draw since lifting them to second spot. Elsewhere, Stuttgart won 3-0 at Wolfsburg to climb to third, with former Wolf Tiago Tomas and Germany duo Maximilian Mittelstaedt and Angelo Stiller grabbing the goals. Promoted Cologne drew 1-1 at home to Augsburg while Werder Bremen gave up the lead twice to draw 2-2 at Heidenheim.
