A German doctor was put on trial on Monday (July 14) for allegedly killing 15 patients with lethal injections and playing "master of life and death" over patients under his care. The 40-year-old palliative care physician, identified by German media as Johannes M, is suspected of having killed 12 women and three men between September 2021 and July 2024, while practicing in Berlin. The doctor is accused of having injected victims, who were between 25 and 94 years old, with lethal mixtures of sedatives and in other instances burning down their houses in an attempt to cover up his crimes. The defendant had “visited his patients under the pretext of providing medical care”, state prosecutor Philipp Meyhoefer said at the beginning of the trial in the Berlin state court. Johannes M had planned "house calls, already with the intention of killing" and exploited his patients' faith in him as a physician, Meyhoefer explained further. "He acted with disregard for life... and behaved as the master of life and death." A colleague initially raised concerns about Johannes M last July when he became suspicious that so many of his patients had died in fires, Die Zeit newspaper reported. He was arrested in August last year, as prosecutors initially charged him with four deaths. But further investigations revealed a multitude of other suspicious cases, and in April prosecutors indicted Johannes M. on 15 counts of murder. Another 96 cases are under investigation, a spokesman for the prosecutors was quoted saying to AFP, including the death of Johannes M's mother-in-law. She had been ill with cancer and died under mysterious circumstances over the same weekend Johannes M and his wife traveled to see her in Poland early in 2024, according to media reports. The suspect allegedly qualified as a radiologist and an general practitioner before proceeding to specialise in palliative medicine. According to Die Zeit, he submitted a doctoral thesis in 2013 examining the reasons for a string of murders in Frankfurt, which began with the question "Why do people kill?" In the indictment against Johannes M, prosecutors said the physician had "injected his patients with an anaesthetic and a muscle relaxant. without their knowledge or consent.". The relaxant "paralysed the respiratory muscles, causing respiratory arrest and death within minutes".
‘No motive beyond killing’
Prosecutors said that he has "no motive beyond killing" and are calling for a life sentence. The case is reminiscent of that of infamous German nurse Niels Hoegel, who was sentenced to life in 2019 after being convicted of killing 85 patients. Hoegel, who is believed to be modern Germany's most prolific serial killer, killed hospital patients through lethal injections between 2000 and 2005, before he was finally apprehended in the act. In more recent times, a 27-year-old nurse received a life sentence in 2023 for killing two patients by intentionally giving them unprescribed medication. A nurse was tried last month in Aachen charged with injecting 26 patients with heavy doses of sedatives or painkillers, killing nine of them. Last week, German police uncovered that they are investigating another suspected serial killer doctor who has allegedly killed several of their predominantly elderly patients. European leaders are rallying once again after Trump threatened to impose 30% tariffs on all EU and Mexican imports starting August 1. This had been the recurring theme in the US-EU relationship since the beginning of the second term of the Trump administration. French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday condemned US President Donald Trump's threat and called on the EU to "resolutely defend European interests".“France fully supports the European Commission in negotiations,” Macron stated on social media. “The deal must reflect the mutual respect that trade partners such as the EU and US owe one another.” He also urged to prepare for credible countermeasures if no feasible deal is reached before the deadline.

Meanwhile, in Berlin, German officials struck a more measured tone but joined in Macron’s call for swift diplomacy. "The EU now must, in the time that remains, negotiate in a pragmatic manner a solution with the United States," said Germany's Economy Minister Katherina Reiche in a statement. The Federation of German Industries (BDI) echoed the same voice, calling the threat “a wake-up call” for industry and diplomacy alike.""A trade conflict between two economic areas as closely linked as the EU and the United States harms economic recovery, innovation strength, and ultimately confidence in international cooperation," warned a senior BDI official.
A fractured west
The joint chorus of concern from Paris and Berlin shows a rare alignment when the European Union is suffering from internal divisions over enlargement, energy policy, and defence. However, Berlin seemed more docile and pragmatic compared to Macron's aggressive postures. It remains to be seen whether this can unite the EU's economic heavyweights into urgent action. European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen reiterated EU will not be “intimidated into accepting unfair terms.”

Ronaldo scores winner against Germany as Portugal reach Nations League final

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the winner in a 2-1 victory over Germany in Munich on Wednesday, sending Portugal through to the Nations League final and breaking his run of bad fortune against the Germans. Ronaldo's 68th-minute tap in, a record-extending 137th international goal, sealed a first win over Germany after five losses, the 40-year-old's longest streak against any national side without tasting victory. After a stuttering first half, Florian Wirtz produced a moment of magic to give Germany the lead three minutes after halftime, starting and finishing a clever burst through the middle and heading in the opener. Portugal's Francisco Conceicao ran 35 metres to score a brilliant solo goal, levelling things up with half an hour remaining. Conceicao's goal was a fitting tribute to his father Sergio, who scored a hat-trick the last time Portugal beat Germany in a 3-0 win in 2000. Defensively we lacked the ruthlessness that we've had in recent games.” Portugal had four players backing up from winning Saturday's Champions League final -- and the ensuing celebrations -- but it was Germany who struggled to find rhythm early. The match started 10 minutes late due to a violent storm which left hailstones scattered across the turf. Aleksandar Pavlovic mislaid several passes while Portugal's approach of pressing Jonathan Tah almost paid dividends, with the defender insecure in possession. Ronaldo, greeted by Portuguese cheers and German boos every time he came near the ball, almost scored the opener six minutes in, but his shot was claimed by old La Liga sparring partner Marc-Andre ter Stegen, playing his first match for Germany since September 2024. On Friday, May 23, in a joint press conference in Berlin with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, a journalist asked Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar if he was disappointed that the German government initially didn't support Operation Sindoor.Maintaining a calm demeanour, Jaishankar responded, “I think you are misinformed, we had a conversation on the May 7 of my recollection, which was when we initiated our operations, and it was a very understanding and positive conversation. Germany’s new government, led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, has said that it plans to turn away asylum-seekers and will increase the number of border police for stricter migration policies.
“Germany will turn some asylum-seekers away at its borders,” said the new Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, though he added that exceptions would be made for ‘vulnerable groups’ like pregnant women and children. During his election campaign, the newly elected Chancellor Friedrich Merz had argued that Germany is surrounded by European Union member states and Switzerland, and so any potential asylum applicants should present their case with them before they reach Germany. He added that as per the EU agreements, asylum-seekers must apply for protection in the first EU country they enter.

Conservative leader Friedrich Merz has been confirmed as the next chancellor of Germany after winning a parliamentary vote on Tuesday (May 6) in his second attempt. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has formally appointed Merz, officially marking the start of the conservative leader’s time in office.
Initially, Merz had failed to secure the majority needed in the Bundestag after falling short of six votes, which proved to be a significant blow.

Merz received 325 votes in favour, more than 316 required in the 630-seat chamber after an unexpected setback at first. In the first round of voting, he only gained 310 votes despite leading a coalition with a parliamentary majority. His initial failure was described as unprecedented in modern German politics, with no candidate having failed in such a way since 1949.
These turn of events come just two and a half months after Merz’s Christian Democrats won the federal election.

Friedrich Merz becomes next German chancellor, wins parliamentary vote in second attempt

Friedrich Merz, the chancellor-designate of Germany, has failed to secure the majority needed in the Bundestag to confirm his position. Despite leading a coalition with a parliamentary majority, Merz only gained 310 votes, six short of the 316 required in the 630-seat chamber.
This unexpected setback came just two and a half months after Merz’s Christian Democrats won the federal election. The result is being described as unprecedented in modern German politics, with no candidate having failed in such a way since 1949.

Coalition tensions come to the surface

The centre-right CDU formed a coalition with the centre-left SPD, but it appears that 18 MPs from within the alliance did not support Merz in the secret ballot. Bundestag President Julia Klöckner later confirmed that nine MPs were absent, three abstained, and one vote was declared invalid.
Although some SPD members have expressed dissatisfaction with the coalition deal finalised just a day earlier, party leadership insists they remain committed to the agreement.

What happens next?

According to Germany’s constitution, the Bundestag now has 14 days to elect a chancellor with an absolute majority. If no one secures that threshold, a simple majority can be used.
Klöckner was reported to be preparing for another vote as soon as Wednesday. However, CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann pushed for a faster resolution, saying, "Europe needs a strong Germany, that's why we can't wait for days."
There is currently confusion in Berlin over the timing of the next vote. No firm schedule has been announced.

Opposition and far-right reaction

Not surprisingly, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), which came second in February’s election with 20.8% of the vote, seized on the result to attack the coalition.
AfD co-leader Alice Weidel posted on X, “The vote showed the weak foundation the small coalition has been built on between the [conservatives] and SPD, which was rejected by voters.” The party is now calling for new elections.

An awkward moment in German politics

The failed vote has added an unexpected twist to the usually well-planned government handover. Outgoing chancellor Olaf Scholz was honoured the night before with a traditional Grand Tattoo by the armed forces, as preparations for the transition were underway.
Merz, 69, had been expected to win the vote and then be sworn in by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Tuesday afternoon. Former chancellor Angela Merkel even returned to parliament to watch the vote unfold.

Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the country’s domestic intelligence agency, issued an update on its investigation into the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), classifying it as a “confirmed right-wing extremist organisation.” Earlier, only the AfD’s state associations in certain parts of Germany were classified as such, but the national party was given a lower, “suspected” status.

Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz (BfV), responsible for safeguarding Germany’s constitutional order, said the announcement comes after an “intense and comprehensive” examination.
“The ethnicity-and ancestry-based conception of the people that predominates within the party is not compatible with the free democratic order,” the BfV said on Friday. “It aims to exclude certain population groups from equal participation in society, to subject them to treatment that violates the constitution, and thereby assign them a legally subordinate status.”

The outgoing Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said that AfD was running a campaign against democratic order. “The AfD represents an ethnic concept that discriminates against entire population groups and treats citizens with a history of migration as second-class Germans,” Faeser said in a statement on Friday. “Their ethnic attitude is reflected in racist statements, especially against immigrants and Muslims,” she added. The populist party secured 20.8% of the votes in the February election, finishing second behind incoming Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s CDU/CSU bloc, which had 28.6% of the vote, but recent polls indicate it is closing the gap with the conservatives, and one poll published last week even put it ahead of CDU/CSU.

AfD co-leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla said they would take legal action against the BfV’s classification of the party as extremist, and termed the decision a “severe blow to German democracy”.
“The AfD is being publicly discredited and criminalised shortly before change of government,” they said.

Zaluzhnyi said the headquarters is located in Wiesbaden, Germany, adding that it has become a secret weapon for our partners.
"This headquarters has truly become a secret weapon for our partners and me in planning operations and formulating the requirements for their implementation," Zaluzhnyi said in a post on Facebook on April 8.

"Over time, we realized that we needed a joint operational headquarters with our partners to assess the needs for weapons and equipment based on the planning of operations," he wrote.

When the German police were informed about a naked female "dead body" in the woods, little did they know it would turn out to be something unimaginable. A murder inquiry was initiated, and the demolition site where it was found was cordoned off.
A dog walker found the "dead body" in a secluded area in a small German city and immediately called the police. Within minutes, homicide and forensic officers, along with pathologists with a bunch of equipment descended on the so-called crime scene. Investigations continued for five hours. Someone then touched the body and realised it wasn't a real human but a sex doll.
The incident was reported in the city of Rostock at 8 pm on Saturday (March 29). Police officers and others investigating the crime scene came with drones and a specialist 3D scanner.

All the formalities linked to a murder scene began. The evidence was collected and photographed. The "dead body" was measured using a ruler, and people were told to stay away. A funeral director was also hired to transport the body to a morgue.
After five hours of work, one of the officers touched the "body" and realised it wasn't real. It seemed to have been made with synthetic material, and so they realised what they were dealing with.
Whoever dumped the sex doll had burned it and stuffed it into a blue bag. It looked so real that the officers didn't notice that what they had been investigating wasn't a real human dead body. The funeral director was informed about the discovery and asked to leave.

The German ambassador to India Dr. Philipp Ackermann has pushed for early conclusion of the India European Free trade agreement, saying that "time is good to develop the free trade agreement and to negotiate it as quickly as possible". India and the European Union earlier this year agreed to conclude the FTA by the end of this year, as both diversify markets and amid concerns over Donald Trump's tariff announcements.
The top German diplomat in India said, "Let me say, in all honesty, you have the President of the Commission of the European Union and the Prime Minister of India sitting together and saying, we commit ourselves that by the end of 2025 this agreement is negotiated and ready to be put on the table. Now that's an imperative according to which we have to react. So I think it comes from the top level, and that's where we want to see". He expressed his confidence in the talks, and termed the FTA as a "game changer for our business in India, as we see more investment".

The urgency for FTA comes amid Trump's focus on reciprocal tariffs that could shake up the global trading system in place for years. Asked for his reaction, he said, "Germany and the European Union, we are promoters for free trade. We are sitting together and trying to develop a free trade agreement with India, to shape it, to negotiate it. So it goes without saying that tariffs on goods are not to our liking". He added, "We have made it very clear that we think it's not the right way. But you know, it's, of course, at the discretion of any country to shape its economic policy. I don't foresee this as a great success in trade policy, international trade policy."
President Donald Trump is set to announce a significant new round of tariffs later today. The highly anticipated announcement could see sweeping duties that, according to the new administration in Washington, aim to protect US interests. The tariffs are expected to build on previous measures Trump has enacted since taking office, including a 20% duty on all Chinese imports, 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum, and earlier levies on Canada and Mexico tied to immigration and drug trafficking concerns.

We will continue our focus on India. We will continue to work together with India". Germany is in the process of forming a new government following the federal election held on February 23, 2025. The conservative CDU/CSU alliance, led by Friedrich Merz, emerged as the largest bloc in the Bundestag, securing 28.5% of the vote and positioning Merz as the likely next chancellor.
