India and France will hold the 36th strategic dialogue in Delhi on Thursday for which French President Emmanuel Macron's diplomatic advisor and G20/G7 Sherpa Emmanuel Bonne will be in the Indian capital. National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval will lead the Indian side having travelled to Paris in 2021 for the last iteration of the dialogue.

The annual dialogue will focus on issues like Indo-Pacific, Afghanistan, G20, defence cooperation, counter-terrorism, and other issues.

Bonne is the first foreign official to travel to Delhi in 2023, a year that will see India host&nbsp;big-ticket summits like the G20 and SCO.

The fact that he is also France's G20 sherpa means a key focus will be on the Indian presidency of the grouping. India as the president of the grouping will hold the summit later this year in September.&nbsp;

In his day-long visit, Bonne is expected to meet other top officials as well. The 52 years old top French diplomat was in Delhi in 2021 and called on PM Modi.

The visit comes in a year when the French President is also expected to visit India and which marks the 25th anniversary of the Indo-French strategic partnership, launched in 1998.

In an exclusive interview with WION’s Molly Gambhir, Jaishankar said that the world is extremely polarised right now and India will be working together with other countries to make sure that the conflict is resolved.&nbsp;

“There is no question that the world is very polarised and one of the biggest issues of polarisation is Ukraine conflict. From the start, we have been advocates of diplomacy and dialogue and the Prime Minister has made it clear that this is not an era of war. Going into Bali while Indonesia had the presidency, they had a tough task on their hands and they did extremely well under the circumstances. But we were very supportive of them and worked together to find some sort of a common landing point on the more difficult issues so that the G20 itself is not impacted by this polarisation.”

When asked about the priorities, he said that India will be looking to articulate the concerns and the interests of the global south which is currently facing various challenges.&nbsp;

“India’s endeavor will be to address some of the pressing issues of the day. Issues like food security and energy security. Also, more perennial issues like sustainable development goals, climate action and climate justice. But we have just taken over the presidency and there will also be a lot of consultations with other countries because we are determined that India should really articulate the concerns and the interests of the global south. The global south is under a lot of pressure due to a combination of circumstances – debt, Covid, the Ukraine conflict, extreme climate and in some parts of the world – terrorism. So, some of what we will be pushing is visible right now and some of it will emerge with the passage of time. But we definitely want to have both a consultative but also an impactful presidency.”&nbsp;

With the G20 summit almost a year away, Jaishankar said that not all agendas are clear but the summit will be the premier forum for the biggest economies in the world to focus on the right issues.&nbsp;

“I think countries today do recognise the value of India which has maintained its relationship and has made clear its principles. The conflict today has other individual concerns – the grain initiative, some anxiety over the nuclear issues and even concerns about how to get fertilisers out to the world. We are working sometimes visibly and sometimes not so. We have been in contact with the UN. But our goal will be to see the G20 as the premier forum for the biggest economies in the world to focus on the right issues, the vulnerability and anxieties of the global south. Because if we take our eyes off that ball, the world is really headed for trouble.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

The ongoing conflict has resulted in major economic crisis in several countries and severe problems with the supply chain responsible for the transport of items across the world. The G20 members hailed the grain deal brokered by the United Nations that allowed ships to leave Ukraine through the Black Sea and said that more such measures are needed to undo the damage caused by the war.

The members also pledged to maintain their promise when it comes to limiting the rise of global temperatures to 1.5 degree Celsius and stopping their over-reliance on fossil fuels.

'Today's era must not be of war': G20 declaration condemns armed conflict in Ukraine

On Wednesday, United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak confirmed UK-India Young Professionals Scheme&nbsp;that will offer 3,000 visas for young professionals from India to work in the UK each year. The scheme will offer 18 to 30-year-olds degree educated Indian nationals to live and work in Britain for up to two years, said 10 Downing Street in a statement.

It added, “India is the first visa-national country to benefit from such a scheme, highlighting the strength of the UK-India Migration and Mobility Partnership agreed last year.” The confirmation came hours after a meeting between the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his UK counterpart which took place on the sidelines amid the ongoing G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia.

“The Indo-Pacific is increasingly crucial for our security and our prosperity. It is teeming with dynamic and fast-growing economies, and the next decade will be defined by what happens in this region,” said the statement quoting Sunak.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Indian investment in Britain supports over 90,000 jobs across the UK. The two countries are also in the midst of negotiating a trade deal which would add to the current 24 billion pounds&nbsp;UK-India trading relationship.&nbsp;

On Tuesday, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol urged his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to play a “more active, constructive role” in curbing threats from North Korea amid recent escalations when the two leaders met on the sidelines of the ongoing G20 Summit in Indonesia, said a statement released by his office.&nbsp;

This comes after North Korea fired a record number of missiles in a single day. It reportedly fired hundreds of artillery shells into the sea and made veiled nuclear threats earlier this month, while South Korea and the United States were conducting a series of military drills which Pyongyang called an “open provocation and dangerous war drill”.&nbsp;

“President Yoon said he hopes that China would play a more active, constructive role as its neighbour and a member of the UN Security Council.” The remark was made after he noted that North Korea has “recently escalated nuclear and missile threats by launching provocations with an unprecedented frequency.”&nbsp;

In response, Xi reportedly also spoke about China and South Korea’s common interest in the Korean Peninsula and that both nations must safeguard peace. The Chinese president also told Yoon that he hopes Seoul will try to improve its relations with Pyongyang and that he is willing to support South Korea’s bid for a denuclearisation offer if North Korea was to accept it.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Yoon’s office also said that the South Korean president proposed holding regular high-level talks and discussing issues like the Covid-19 pandemic, the global economy and climate change.&nbsp;

The statement said that Xi had agreed on the need to boost bilateral dialogue and build political trust and said that he would visit South Korea after the Covid-19 situation in China stabilises. Following a positive COVID-19 test that caused him to cancel talks at the G20 Summit in Indonesia and leave early, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen expressed concern for the health of other world leaders on Tuesday.&nbsp;

Hun Sen, the current ASEAN chairman, claimed that his symptoms were minimal but he was concerned because many of the G20 participants had attended the ASEAN and East Asia Summits he hosted in Cambodia, which finished on Sunday.&nbsp;

He posted an audio message on his Facebook page saying, "This is my biggest concern. The president of Indonesia who&nbsp;is the next rotating chair of ASEAN was always with me."

"Besides him, there are some other leaders who were close with me, shook hands and travelled together, including the US president, who sat together at dinner and travelled together," he added.

It was unclear right away if any of the G20 summit's leaders had COVID-19 positive tests.&nbsp;

Indonesia, which is hosting the summit, has put in place stringent COVID-19 standards, such as mask requirements, body temperature checks, antigen testing, and PCR (polymerase chain reaction) swab tests, to reduce the danger of virus spread.

According to the White House, US President Joe Biden, who undergoes routine COVID-19 testing, received a negative result on Tuesday morning.&nbsp;
