An international arrest warrant has been issued against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad over the 2012 bombardment of Homs, which led to numerous civilian casualties. The warrant marks a significant move in holding Assad accountable for alleged war crimes during the early years of the Syrian civil war.

France issues arrest warrant against Assad, charged with war crimes

France has issued arrest warrants for former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and six top Syrian officials in connection with a deadly 2012 bombing that killed two journalists in Homs. The attack, which struck an informal press center, resulted in the deaths of American reporter Marie Colvin and French photographer Remi Ochlik. A judicial investigation concluded that the Syrian regime deliberately targeted foreign journalists to silence media coverage of its war crimes.

France is heating up and so are its electricity prices. A fresh spike in demand for cooling systems is pushing the country’s power rates to their highest in weeks, as Europe battles another bout of summer heat. According to Bloomberg, French electricity prices for Thursday surged by 41 per cent to €91.20 (about $106) per megawatt-hour. This marks the highest level since early July, based on market data from Epex Spot, a key European power exchange. The surge is being driven by an unseasonal jump in temperatures, especially in southern France and Spain, forcing households and businesses to ramp up air conditioning.
Heat triggers cooling crunch
France, like much of Europe, has already endured one heatwave this summer, in late June and early July. That weather event drove electricity prices higher across the continent, with demand for cooling outpacing seasonal norms. But this week’s heat is more localised, hitting France, Spain, and parts of the Nordic region, where daily temperatures have hovered well above the long-term average. As per Bloomberg, some Nordic areas have experienced several consecutive days of abnormally high temperatures. The French national weather service has warned that temperatures will climb even further on Friday, likely triggering another jump in power demand. According to energy analysts cited by Bloomberg, the heat is projected to nearly double the typical number of cooling degree days, a metric that measures demand for air conditioning based on how much temperatures exceed a comfort threshold compared to the 30-year average for this time of year.
Why this matters?
Rising power prices not only squeeze households but also add pressure on industries and grid operators during peak hours. For France, which relies heavily on nuclear power for its energy supply, maintaining steady output is crucial, especially during extreme weather, when even reactor operations can be affected. While renewables such as solar can help buffer daytime demand, prolonged heat waves typically stretch grid capacity, particularly in regions not historically designed for large-scale cooling loads. Europe’s power markets remain sensitive to weather fluctuations, and events like these raise questions about climate resilience, infrastructure planning, and the energy cost burden amid warming summers.

This heatwave, following prior extreme weather, stresses the grid and household budgets, raising concerns about energy resilience and infrastructure amid prolonged heating trends across Europe.

European leaders are rallying once again after Trump threatened to impose 30% tariffs on all EU and Mexican imports starting August 1. Meanwhile, in Berlin, German officials struck a more measured tone but joined in Macron’s call for swift diplomacy. "The EU now must, in the time that remains, negotiate in a pragmatic manner a solution with the United States," said Germany's Economy Minister Katherina Reiche in a statement. The Federation of German Industries (BDI) echoed the same voice, calling the threat “a wake-up call” for industry and diplomacy alike.""A trade conflict between two economic areas as closely linked as the EU and the United States harms economic recovery, innovation strength, and ultimately confidence in international cooperation," warned a senior BDI official.
A fractured west
The joint chorus of concern from Paris and Berlin shows a rare alignment when the European Union is suffering from internal divisions over enlargement, energy policy, and defence. However, Berlin seemed more docile and pragmatic compared to Macron's aggressive postures. It remains to be seen whether this can unite the EU's economic heavyweights into urgent action. European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen reiterated EU will not be “intimidated into accepting unfair terms.”

The man, an experienced climber, managed to sneak into the tower’s premises shortly after 5 am, before its opening, and climbed to the top carrying a parachute in a backpack. He jumped from the monument and landed in a nearby stadium, where he was arrested by the authorities for endangering the lives of others. The Eiffel Tower is the most popular tourist spot in the French capital. Completed in 1889 for the Paris Universal Exhibition, it is owned by the city of Paris. Attracting about seven million people every year, it is one of the most visited monuments in the world, with three-quarters of the visitors coming from abroad. Earlier this month, the authorities of Paris closed the top of the Eiffel Tower due to extreme heat conditions in the city as parts of Europe were gripped by a heatwave. On July 14th, the monument will be prepared for the fireworks for the Bastille Day celebrations.

France’s finance minister has issued a stark warning that the European Union could face sharply higher US tariffs within days if negotiators fail to strike a deal with Washington, underscoring rising transatlantic trade tensions that risk hurting European industry. Speaking at an economic forum in Aix-en-Provence on Saturday, French Finance Minister Eric Lombard said he hoped talks between EU and US officials taking place over the weekend would succeed in averting the threatened tariff hikes before a critical July 9 deadline “On tariffs, it could all be decided this weekend,” Lombard said, as quoted by AFP. “If not, Europe will undoubtedly have to respond more vigorously to restore the balance.”
Steep tariff snapback deadline
According to AFP reporting, if no agreement is reached by Wednesday next week, higher levies on European exports to the US will automatically come back into force. The default tariff on EU imports is set to double to 20 per cent or even higher, with US President Donald Trump at one point threatening duties as high as 50 per cent. Talks between Brussels and Washington this weekend are seen as a last-ditch effort to avoid a trade escalation that could hit European exporters hard at a time of already slowing economic growth in the eurozone. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Thursday that Brussels was aiming for an “agreement in principle,” though she cautioned that even such a deal would require further negotiations to finalise the details, AFP reported. However, the Commission has also warned that even with an agreement, there may still be an imbalance in trade measures between the EU and the US.
France vows to defend industry
At the Aix-en-Provence forum, Lombard warned that Europe must be prepared to defend its industrial base not just from US tariffs but also from China’s industrial overcapacity. “It is essential to protect our industry from the US and China,” he said, according to AFP. Using stark imagery, Lombard likened the global trade environment to a playground where rules were being upended by aggressive economic powers. “Imagine the world as a playground where everyone is playing… and following the rules,” he said. “And then three bullies come along and don’t follow any rules, they knock over the game tables and push around the children who were playing nicely. That’s the world of predators,” he added, naming the US, Russia, and China as examples.
Concerns about Chinese overcapacity
Lombard also argued that existing tariffs on sectors like steel and automotive goods were not enough to counter China’s industrial strategy.“We need to do it across all our industrial sectors,” he said, warning that China’s policy of maintaining production capacity exceeding 50 per cent of global market share in key industrial segments risked “destroying our industry.”
High-stakes test for Brussels
The tariff deadline comes at a politically sensitive moment for Brussels. European leaders have been under pressure to show they can defend EU economic interests while avoiding a costly trade war with Washington, even as relations with Beijing grow more strained over issues such as green technology competition and human rights. A failure to strike a deal would risk exposing European manufacturers to steep US tariffs just as they face growing competition from China’s subsidised industries. France police have detained 12 suspects after 145 people were targeted in "syringe attacks". On Saturday (Jun 21), millions of people took to the streets in the evening to participate in this year's 'Fête de la Musique,' with authorities reporting "unprecedented crowds" in Paris. However, this year's beloved annual street music festival turned unsettling after dozens of festival goers reported being pricked with syringes in crowded public spaces. This has prompted a nationwide investigation and a wave of arrests. Here's what we know so far about the "syringe attacks".
What happened?
According to French authorities, 145 people across the country said they were stabbed or pricked with needles during Saturday night's festivities. The Fête de la Musique draws millions into the streets each June to celebrate live music. This year, officials reported a sharp spike in disturbing reports from attendees. The victims of these "syringe attacks" included both men and women. In Paris, at least 13 cases were recorded, including a 15-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man who reported feeling unwell after being stabbed in separate incidents.
Were drugs involved?
At this stage, officials haven’t confirmed whether the syringe attacks involved date drugs or substances like GHB or Rohypnol — used by predators to incapacitate and rape victims. Some individuals were taken to the hospital for toxicology tests, said the interior ministry, but no public toxicology results had been released at the time this report was published. As per AFP, ahead of the festival, social media posts had circulated calling for women to be targeted, which hints at the possibility that at least some attacks may have been premeditated.
Who was arrested?
So far, twelve people have been arrested across France in connection with the attacks. Among them, four suspects in Angoulême — a city in the southwest — are believed to have targeted around 50 victims, reports AFP citing police sources.Outside of the syringe-related cases, more than 370 people were arrested nationwide during the festival for various offences, including nearly 90 people in Paris.
Was anyone seriously hurt?
None of the victims of the "syringe attacks" are being reported as being seriously hurt. However, outside of that, 14 people were seriously injured during the night's celebrations. One of the most concerning cases involved a 17-year-old who was found on the street with stab wounds to the lower abdomen and was hospitalised.Thirteen police officers were also injured during crowd control and other incidents. In an effort to reduce screen time among young people, several universities in France have prohibited the use of laptops and other digital devices during lectures, requiring students to take notes by hand. Among the key institutes taking this decision are the Institute of Political Studies in Rennes, the Free Faculty of Philosophy and Psychology in Paris, as well as Ircom, a private college in Angers.
Focus on reducing distractions
University officials argue that the policy aims to eliminate distractions and enhance students' focus in class, according to a report by The Times. Gabriel Medaouar from the Catholic University of the West in Angers said, “Our lecturers should not have to teach in front of students who are distracted.” He emphasised that students are aware of this policy when they enroll and quickly adapt to the handwritten approach. “When students enrol here, they know that they won’t be able to write on computers. They adapt to it very well,” he told Le Figaro.
Wider adoption across institutions
This new initiative isn't limited to one university. The Institute of Political Studies in Rennes has enforced the handwritten note rule for first- and second-year students. Similarly, the Free Faculty of Philosophy and Psychology in Paris and the political science programme at Ircom, a private college in Angers, have also adopted this approach. Ircom, however, allows exceptions for students with disabilities who cannot write by hand. In some cases, lecturers are taking matters into their own hands, banning screens in their classrooms regardless of university-wide policies. Julien Damon, who teaches at the Sciences Po in Paris, said that although some students type notes, many end up browsing online, replying to messages, or shopping. “Some students do take notes on computers but many reply to messages, shop or go on social media,” Damon said. Some lecturers argue that digital devices hinder the teacher-student connection. Alexis Buixan of Sciences Po in Rennes said that screens make interactions feel robotic. “Sometimes you feel as if you’re dealing with robotised young people who note everything without asking themselves any questions. That dehumanises the teacher-student relationship,” Buixan said.
Psychologists back handwritten notes
Experts suggest that handwritten notes can lead to better retention and understanding. Thierry Olive, a psychologist at France’s National Centre for Scientific Research, explained that writing by hand is slower than typing, which forces students to summarise key points and focus more. “Students go more slowly by hand than on a keyboard and this forces them to select the most important information and shorten their notes so they don’t miss anything. It obliges them to concentrate more and helps them retain more information,” he said.
A global trend
This shift toward handwriting is gaining traction beyond France. Harvard University in the US advises students that handwritten notes can enhance learning outcomes, suggesting a growing international recognition of its benefits.
Push to reduce screen exposure in youth
France appears to be at the forefront of efforts to limit screen exposure for children. Health Minister Catherine Vautrin proposed legislation banning screen use for children under three. While she admits enforcement won’t involve legal penalties for parents, she believes families will comply once it becomes law.
Latest measures against online influence
Following the stabbing of a teaching assistant near a school in France, allegedly by a 14-year-old on June 10, French President Emmanuel Macron announced plans to restrict social media access for those under 15.
