French President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday that France could recognise a Palestinian state in June, adding that, in turn, some countries in the Middle East could recognise the state of Israel.
"We need to move towards recognition (of a Palestinian state). And so, over the next few months, we will. I'm not doing it to please anyone. I'll do it because at some point it will be right," he said during an interview on France 5 television.

India has approved a ₹63,000 crore deal to purchase 26 Rafale-M (Marine) fighter jets from France, marking a significant boost to its naval capabilities. The deal strengthens India’s defense preparedness, especially for aircraft carriers like INS Vikrant. The Rafale-M jets are specially designed for naval operations and will enhance India's maritime security posture in the Indo-Pacific region.

The French parliament has definitively adopted a bill to restrict citizenship rights for children born in its Indian Ocean overseas territory of Mayotte.
Mayotte is a French archipelago, part of the Comoros in the Mozambique Channel. Around 320,000 people live in Mayotte, according to France's national statistics agency. As per AFP, a 2019 study found that half the population were foreigners, a third of whom were born in the French territory. Citizenship laws for Mayotte have changed since 2018 but this latest bill will make it stricter.
Mayotte is one of the five overseas departments of France located in the Indian Ocean, off the East African coast. The Muslim-majority overseas territory, which voted to stay part of France in 1974, became a full-fledged French department in 2011. France administers 12 territories outside of Europe, known as French overseas territories. These territories are largely remnants of the French colonial empire.

France's political landscape is going through a dramatic turnaround after far-right leader Marine Le Pen's conviction in an embezzlement case. Thousands are out on the streets again, many in support of Le Pen while there are others who support her conviction. But amid the divide, the National Rally leader is determined to fight for her political future.

French Prime Minister François Bayrou has slammed US President Donald Trump for supporting far-right leader Marine Le Pen, who has been barred from holding public office after being found guilty in an embezzlement case...

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen could contest the 2027 presidential election if her conviction is overturned. A French court said it will examine her case within a timeframe, and the new trial could be held by early 2026.

Embezzlement case: French appeals court to examine Le Pen's case

&ldquo;It&rsquo;s my political death they want,&rdquo; <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/who-is-marine-le-pen-frances-far-right-leader-to-serve-four-years-in-prison-banned-from-running-for-office-8911013">Marine Le Pen</a> declared in November. Few took her words seriously then, but on Monday, her prediction became reality.
A Paris court delivered a bombshell ruling, barring Le Pen from running for public office for five years, sentencing her to four years in prison, and imposing a &euro;100,000 fine.&nbsp;
The decision, which takes immediate effect despite her appeal, removes the far-right leader from the 2027 French presidential race and changes the country&rsquo;s political landscape.
For months, Le Pen had insisted that the judiciary would not dare to impose an immediate political ban even if she was convicted of embezzling EU funds. She was wrong.
<h2>A blow to Le Pen, a gift to her party?</h2>
As leader of the National Rally (RN), Le Pen was seen as the frontrunner for the 2027 election, with polls placing her 10 points ahead of her nearest rival. She had a clear path to becoming France&rsquo;s first female president. That path is now blocked.
Yet, far from destroying RN, the ruling may ironically strengthen the far right. Le Pen and her supporters have framed it as an establishment plot to sideline her and silence their movement. The narrative of persecution plays perfectly into populist rhetoric. Jordan Bardella, the 28-year-old RN president and likely successor, has already called it the &ldquo;execution&rdquo; of democracy.
<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/this-will-backfire-elon-musk-slams-marine-le-pen-election-ban-as-abuse-of-power-compare-it-to-trump-trials-8911192">Le Pen</a> is no stranger to reinvention. She has spent over a decade trying to "detoxify" the RN, distancing it from its openly racist past under her father, Jean-Marie Le Pen. In 2015, she expelled him from the party he founded.
By softening its image, she broadened RN&rsquo;s appeal, attracting working-class and rural voters. Now, her downfall could finally sever the party from the Le Pen name&mdash;once its&nbsp;greatest asset but also its heaviest burden.
<h2>A martyr for the far right</h2>
For RN voters, the ruling confirms what they have long believed: The system is rigged against them. Le Pen is already portraying herself as a victim of the establishment, echoing the rhetoric of Donald Trump, who similarly claims political persecution through the courts.
Elon Musk said the same, warning that the decision would &ldquo;backfire&rdquo; and accusing the &ldquo;radical left&rdquo; of manipulating the legal system to jail opponents. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/what-does-trump-want-from-putin-us-prez-comments-on-ukraine-peace-deal-says-its-something-i-would-do-if-8911644">Kremlin</a> spokesperson Dmitry Peskov also denounced the ruling, saying European democracies were &ldquo;violating democratic norms.&rdquo;
The conviction could charge RN supporters rather than weaken them.
Many of them do not see Le Pen&rsquo;s financial misconduct as any worse than the corruption scandals that have swarmed France&rsquo;s mainstream parties. Instead, her punishment is likely to be worn as a badge of honour, a symbol that she alone is standing up to the establishment.
<h2>What happens next?</h2>
Le Pen has appealed, meaning there is a small chance her ban could be overturned or reduced. If an appeal ruling arrives by early 2026 and reverses the court&rsquo;s decision, she could still run. But that scenario remains unlikely.
More immediately, RN is expected to gain support in the wake of this ruling. The idea that Le Pen has been politically "assassinated" will fuel outrage and strengthen her movement. For now, the question is no longer whether Le Pen will be a candidate in 2027 but who will replace her as the face of the far right.
The ruling has effectively launched the race to succeed <a href="https://www.wionews.com/web-stories/world/iran-released-french-citizen-olivier-grondeau-after-almost-900-days-confirms-president-emmanuel-macron-8872832">Emmanuel Macron</a>, who is term-limited. Le Pen was widely expected to make the second round of the 2027 election, with the&nbsp;real question being who would face her in the final vote. Now, the equation has changed.
While some believe her political career is over, Le Pen has been written off before. The far right in France is not going away. If anything, this ruling may accelerate its transformation and its rise to power.

France has modified its official advice to nationals travelling to the United States, warning they must now state their gender assigned at birth in visa or ESTA applications.
It stopped short of warning, as Denmark did recently, that transgender people could be barred from entering the US as a result of a decree signed by President Trump on January 20.
But potential visitors are "strongly recommended" to check the website of the US embassy in Paris "for any changes or new measures adopted", the French foreign ministry said in an update to its travel advice published overnight on Monday to Tuesday.
The Trump decree states that the US government only recognises the gender assigned to a person at birth, ruling out the possibility of marking "X" to indicate a non-binary status, or declaring a different gender.

"In particular, for new visa or ESTA applications, it is important to note that a section has been added that requires... applicants to state their 'gender assigned at birth'," the foreign ministry in Paris said.
ESTA, which stands for "Electronic System for Travel Authorisation", is an automated system to determine the eligibility of visitors to the US under its visa waiver programme.
An ESTA, valid for visits up to 90 days, does not guarantee admission to US territory, however.
The final decision is up to border officials on a visitor's arrival.
Nationals of dozens of countries are eligible for an ESTA, including France.

Iranian authorities have released French citizen Olivier Grondeau, detained since October 2022 on security charges, and he has returned to France, President Emmanuel Macron announced Thursday.
Grondeau, 34, "is free and with his loved ones", Macron posted on X.
He added that "our mobilisation will not weaken" to ensure the release of two other French citizens still detained by Iran in what Paris views as state hostage-taking.
Grondeau arrived in France on Monday evening after an almost 900-day ordeal, the Elysee Palace and a diplomatic source told AFP.&nbsp;
No further details on the circumstances of Grondeau's release were made available.&nbsp;
Grondeau, who is from Montpellier in the south of France, remains in hospital undergoing a battery of tests, having been severely weakened in recent months, particularly psychologically, a government source told AFP, asking not to be named.
"It is a great joy to have Olivier back since he is innocent of all charges and has always belonged among us," his French lawyer, Chirinne Ardakani, told AFP.
The other two French nationals are Cecile Kohler, a teacher, and her partner, Jacques Paris, who were detained in May 2022. They are accused of seeking to stir up labour protests, accusations their families have denied.
Western countries have for years accused Iran of detaining their nationals on trumped-up charges in a policy of state hostage-taking to use them as bargaining chips to extract concessions.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot posted a picture of a smiling Grondeau on a plane returning home.
"Held hostage in Iran for 887 days, he has been reunited with his family, loved ones, and his country. It's a huge relief," Barrot said on X.
Grondeau, who turns 35 next week, was arrested in Shiraz, southern Iran, in October 2022 and sentenced to five years in prison for "conspiracy against the Islamic Republic".
His family rejected the charges, describing Grondeau as a passionate fan of Persian poetry who went to Iran on a tourist visa as part of a world tour.
France describes its nationals held by Iran as "state hostages" who have been arbitrarily detained and are innocent of all the charges against them.
<h2>'Dying slow death'&nbsp;</h2>
Until earlier this year, Grondeau had been identified only by his first name but his full identity was revealed by his family in January.&nbsp;
In an audio message aired by French media at the time, Grondeau said he and the other two French detainees in Iran were "exhausted" and their strength was "running out".

There has been growing concern over the health of the two other French citizens held by Iran, with Kohler's family warning that they risked dying if they were not freed.
"Cecile Kohler and Jacques Paris must be freed from Iranian prisons," Macron said in his message.
Ardakani, who also represents Kohler, emphasised the need to keep fighting for the two French nationals still detained in Iran.
"Their jailers will have to answer for their criminal acts, including before the French courts," she said.
"I am thinking of my client, still incarcerated in section 209 of Evin prison," she said, adding that Kohler was kept in a windowless cell of just eight square metres (86 square feet) "under continuous video surveillance" and had to sleep on the floor.
They are "dying a slow death," Cecile's sister Noemie Kohler said in early March.
Another French detainee, Louis Arnaud, held in Iran since September 2022, was released in June 2024.

The White House on Monday (March 17) dismissed a suggestion from a French member of the European Parliament to return the Statue of Liberty, saying that France would be "speaking German" without American intervention during World War II.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt responded to the French MEP's comments on Monday, stating, "My advice to that unnamed, low-level French politician would be to remind them that it's only because of the United States of America that the French are not speaking German right now, so they should be very grateful to our great country."

<h2>'Give us back the Statue of Liberty'</h2>
The comments were made in response to French MEP Raphael Glucksmann, a member of the Socialists and Democrats group, who argued that the United States no longer deserves the statue. He suggested it should be returned because America had, in his view, aligned itself with tyrants.
Speaking at a party convention, Glucksmann said, "We're going to say to the Americans who have chosen to side with the tyrants, to the Americans who fired researchers for demanding scientific freedom: 'Give us back the Statue of Liberty'."

He continued, "We gave it to you as a gift, but apparently you despise it. So it will be just fine here at home."
Glucksmann also suggested that France could benefit if American professionals dismissed under the Trump administration decided to relocate.
"The second thing we're going to say to the Americans is: 'If you want to fire your best researchers, if you want to fire all the people who, through their freedom and their sense of innovation, their taste for doubt and research, have made your country the world's leading power, then we're going to welcome them'," he said.

His comments come after the US temporarily halted aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine. Although aid to Kyiv has since resumed, President Donald Trump&rsquo;s approach to Russia, his well-documented admiration for Vladimir Putin, as well as his attacks on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, have caused the whole of Europe to be alarmed and rethink its dependence on the United States.

'Give us back the Statue of Liberty' The comments were made in response to French MEP Raphael Glucksmann, a member of the Socialists and Democrats group, who argued that the United States no longer deserves the statue. He suggested it should be returned because America had, in his view, aligned itself with tyrants. Speaking at a party convention, Glucksmann said, "We're going to say to the Americans who have chosen to side with the tyrants, to the Americans who fired researchers for demanding scientific freedom: 'Give us back the Statue of Liberty'." So it will be just fine here at home." Glucksmann also suggested that France could benefit if American professionals dismissed under the Trump administration decided to relocate. "The second thing we're going to say to the Americans is: 'If you want to fire your best researchers, if you want to fire all the people who, through their freedom and their sense of innovation, their taste for doubt and research, have made your country the world's leading power, then we're going to welcome them'," he said. <h2>French restriction on Muslim clothing</h2>
The French government banned &ldquo;conspicuous&rdquo; religious symbols in state schools and hospitals in 2004. In 2010, a law was made prohibiting full-face veils (niqab) in public spaces. Recently in 2023, the government banned abayas, full-length dresses worn by some Muslim women, in schools. In the Summer Olympics in Paris, the athletes were barred from wearing the hijab.
