Bengaluru FC had to come from behind to defeat Odisha FC by a 2-1 scoreline in the 2021-22 Indian Super League (ISL) at the Athletic Stadium, here on Monday. The result keeps the Blues in the hunt for a semi-finals spot as they rise to fifth with 26 points, one behind fourth-placed Kerala Blasters FC. On the other hand, a third winless outing causes O`C`s semi-finals ambitions to suffer a huge blow.

Nandhakumar Sekar (8`) pounced on a loose ball to score early in the game but Danish Farooq`s (31`) header levelled the score. Cleiton Silva (49`) scored from the penalty spot in the second half, which eventually separated the two teams.

Both teams began on a strong note, creating decent scoring opportunities. Bruno Ramires came close to scoring inside five minutes but his long-ranger swerved narrowly past the target.

However, it was Odisha FC that took the lead after Jonathas found space behind the BFC backline but saw his shot saved by Lara Sharma. Unfortunately for the Blues, the rebound fell to Nandhakumar Sekar who sent his team into an early lead.

The equaliser arrived soon as Danish Farooq scored with a header from Roshan Naorem`s corner at the half-hour mark. Kamaljit Singh misjudged the flight of the ball that gave the midfielder a free-header on the far post, leading to the goal. The first half had an eventful end with Nandhakumar coming up one-on-one with the goalkeeper. But, the winger managed to hit the side netting after dodging the advancing Sharma, failing to score a second.

The second half started on a poor note for the Kalinga Warriors, as they gave away a penalty inside the first few minutes of the restart after Udanta Singh was tripped inside the box. Cleiton Silva took the spot-kick and expertly sent the goalkeeper in the wrong direction to hand the lead to BFC.

Odisha`s quest for a second saw them make a few attacking substitutions, one of them being Aridai Cabrera. The forward fed Isaac Vanmalsawma whose shot was parried onto the right goalpost by Sharma in goal. Bengaluru FC defended resiliently in the final stages of the match. Despite getting an extra five minutes of added time, OFC was unable to find the crucial second goal and conceded the defeat.

Odisha FC`s next outing will be against top-four contenders ATK Mohun Bagan at the Tilak Maidan Stadium on Thursday whereas Bengaluru FC also play the Mariners next at the PJN Stadium on Sunday.

Football fans are blessed to see two of the greatest-of-all-time Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo dominate the modern era. However, many a time the question of who is the best among the two has often cropped up. Even celebrities, from various fields, have been asked to pick one between Ronaldo and Messi.

Sachin, in an interview with Graham Bensinger, picked Messi as his choice when he was asked about it during the chat. The cricketing legend responded saying: "Messi is more of my type". Here's the video:

Sometime back, India's former captain Virat Kohli was also asked the same question, i.e. to choose one between Ronaldo and Messi. To this, Kohli had chosen the Portugal captain and Manchester United striker Ronaldo as his choice.

Tough question. But I would say Cristiano is the most complete player that I have seen. Whether it's the left foot, right foot, speed or dribbling skills, he's amazing. I have not seen a better goalscorer," Kohli was quoted as saying by Times of India.

"He revolutionised the sport and everyone followed him. His place is special, but if I had to take only one in my team who will give energy and intensity, it's Cristiano.

"[...] Messi is a freak, absolute natural talent, and his ability is second to none. For me, what stands out is the ability or the will to put in the effort in every single minute of the game. Ronaldo's drive separates him from everyone else. Playing at the top level, everyone has talent, but I don't think anyone has the will that he has."

Fans do a lot for their favourite player. Over the years, we have heard several stories where a fan has gone out of his, or her, comfort zone to express love and gratitude for a particular player or team. Recently, a six-year-old young boy won hearts on the internet with his heartwarming note for his favourite player, i.e. Swindon Town Football Club (STFC)'s striker Harry McKirdy.

The youngster, known as Joe, wrote to the club revealing he cannot afford to attend matches because his mother “has no money for food”. In addition, the boy explained that his family doesn't have enough money as his mother has to pay for his “dinner at school.” “I like Swindon Town Harry McKidy. I will come one day,” the handwritten note read.

Receiving his note, the Swindon Town FC's official Twitter handle shared a post and captioned it, "We have received this letter from Town fan Joe, aged 6 and a half. We'd really love to get in touch with Joe, but we don't have a return address. If anyone recognises the writing or thinks they know who Joe is, please email supporters@swindontownfc.co.uk"

A commanding display by Mumbai City FC helped them secure a 4-1 win over Odisha FC in the Indian Super League (ISL) at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, here on Sunday. A brace each from Igor Angulo (41`, 70`) and Bipin Singh (47`, 73`) was enough to cancel Jonathas` (90+1`) goal and secure three points that lift the club to the fourth position on the table. On the other hand, the Kalinga Warriors are left licking their wounds as they remain stuck in seventh place.

MCFC was denied two shouts for a penalty early in the match as they pushed for the opening goal. Both teams exchanged blows back and forth until the half-hour mark, looking for the opening goal. Jerry Mawihmingthanga came extremely close to opening the scoring but Mandar Dessai denied him with a last-ditch clearance right after the drinks break.

However, it was the Islanders that broke the deadlock through Igor Angulo. The Spaniard was left unmarked inside the box by the Odisha defenders, who met Rahul Bheke`s cross and slotted his header past the goalkeeper with ease.

Victor Mongil came close to scoring the equaliser but his header from a corner went off-target, to the disappointment of his head coach on the sidelines. Des`ite OFC`s best efforts, MCFC maintained their advantage heading into the half-time break.

The second half began on a terrible note for Odisha as they conceded the second goal, this time through Bipin Singh. The winger was fed by Ahmed Jahouh and managed to find the back of the net from an extremely tight angle. The scorers Bipin and Igor combined again at the stroke of the 70th minute to add a third goal. Scoring his second, Angulo weaved past a couple of defenders and calmly put his left-footed shot in the bottom right corner.

Then, Bipin Singh scored his second from close range barely two minutes later following on some brilliant work from Cassio Gabriel on the left flank, who served the ball on a platter. The Islanders were denied the clean sheet by Jonathas, who found the back of the net with a sensational curling effort from long range, four minutes before the final whistle.

Jay Rodriguez`s second-half goal gave Burnley what could be a valuable point in their battle against relegation in the Premier League as they claimed a 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Turf Moor on Tuesday. Man Utd dominated the first half and after Raphael Varane`s goal was ruled out for offside, they went ahead on 18 minutes when Luke Shaw found Paul Pogba, who placed his shot into the corner.

The visitors tried to add to their lead but Edinson Cavani, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford were denied by goalkeeper Nick Pope before half-time. United were left to rue those misses as three minutes into the second half, Burnley`s Wout Weghorst showed great skill before his reverse pass played in Rodriguez who ran in on goal to finish. Elsewhere, Kieran Trippier`s superb free-kick helped Newcastle United claim a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Everton which moves the Magpies out of the bottom three.

FIFA hopes the rolling out of its semi-automated offside technology being trialled at the Club World Cup will not only speed up decision-making but offer increased clarity for football supporters.

The optical tracking system was first tested at last year's Arab Cup in Qatar, and the ultimate goal is for it to be fully in use for the World Cup in the Gulf state later this year.

Pierluigi Collina, chairman of FIFA's referees committee, on Wednesday told reporters VAR had proved "very successful" since its introduction but conceded more consistency is needed.

"It's not yet at the very, very top... the same speed decision-making process. Being fast and being accurate don't work together," Collina said at the Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi.

"It's important the video officials get an accurate decision, but we are aware we need to reduce the time, particularly with offside."

"Sometimes it takes a bit longer to assess an offside decision, particularly in very tight incidents," he said.

"The goal is already celebrated, everybody is waiting and then there is a goal disallowed, or the other way round... and then after quite a long time there is the final decision."

The data-driven, limb-tracking technology relies on a series of dedicated cameras and broadcast cameras around the stadium to give the exact position of players on the pitch, offering referees precise information within seconds.

To provide improved accuracy, the system currently generates 18 data points per player -- tracking the various parts of the body to create a skeletal, three-dimensional model.

The aim is to increase that to 29 for the World Cup to provide further precision, according to the head of football technology at FIFA, Sebastian Runge.

Once a final decision is made, the artificial-intelligence driven technology turns the images into a 3D animation that can be displayed on the big screen at grounds.

"By taking that data, we can enter the 3D world and we can create animations, that can explain perfectly whether a player was onside, how much of that player was offside or onside," said Runge.

"We put that in an animation that will be shared with TV and our giant screen operators and we can inform the spectators in a clearer way on offside and onside decisions."

More than just a robot

Despite the ever-growing influence of technology, FIFA insisted the match officials will always make the final call.

A dedicated VAR assistant is responsible for monitoring offside, checking incidents as they happen rather than waiting for a stoppage in play.

The assistant notifies the main VAR official, who makes the decision and then speaks to the referee.

"I know that someone called it 'robot offside'; it's not. The technology is simply a tool used by human beings," said Collina.

"The referees and the assistant referees are still responsible for the decision on the field of play. The technology only gives them valued support to make more accurate and quicker decisions."

Collina used the example of a goal ruled out for offside in Palmeiras' 2-0 semi-final win over Al Ahly on Tuesday as an area where more can be done to keep fans fully informed.

"We were discussing before how to get the attention of the people in the stadium because if you don't know (the animation) is coming... you don't look at the giant screen," he said.

"It's not possible to get this image within the same stoppage of play. It takes roughly 30 seconds, that's why it's shown at the next stoppage of play.

Africa Cup of Nations: Senegal President awards cash prize, prime real estate to men's soccer team

Cristiano Ronaldo's arrival at Manchester United at the beginning of the ongoing season was seen as the start of something special at Old Trafford. Having finished second just behind arch-rivals Manchester City last season, United were tipped to take the season by a storm with a squad full of some of the best talents in the league.

United started the season brilliantly with big wins in the Premier League against Leeds United and Newcastle before making a winning start in the Champions League as well. United were looking right on track before results started to go downhill against former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The club legend was asked to leave following a humiliating 4-1 defeat against Watford.

United were 12 points behind league leaders Chelsea when Solskjaer was sacked. The Norweigan has been replaced by German coach Ralph Rangnick, who has been appointed as an interim manager by United and will serve in a consultancy role for a further two years. United enjoyed a great run of games under Rangnick before suffering their first defeat in his reign against Wolves in the Premier League.

There were reports of discontent in the United dressing room following Ronaldo's arrival at his old club while some experts also claimed the Portuguese has created an imbalance in the squad. At 36, Ronaldo might not be the prolific goal-scorer that he was in his peak but still is one of the fittest footballers in the world and has been among the goals consistently for the Red Devils.

Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov rubbished the claims of Ronaldo bringing imbalance to the United squad and said the Portuguese legend is a leader on and off the field.Berbatov, who spent a year playing with Ronaldo at United, said the youngsters at the club should try and learn from the 36-year-old, who has won everything there is to be in club football and is still going strong at the age of 36.

"This is something you always hear in football. When a superstar, a legend, one of the best ever comes to a team the focus immediately shifts on him. Whether he plays well, scores goals or not, the spotlight will always be on Cristiano. But I don't agree he has brought imbalance in the squad," Berbatov said in an exclusive interview with WION.

"When you have someone like him, you need to find a way to get the best out of him. Young players should take advice from him, check how he trains and prepares. I spent a year with him at United and I know how professional he is.

Sometimes he will not play, when he is rested but when he plays he scores goals and draws defenders towards him and makes free spaces for other forwards. He is a bonus player to have and I hope they will continue getting the best out of him not only on the pitch but the dressing room too because he is a leader," he added.

United have endured a difficult phase in the Premier League recently but have managed to bounce back well and are currently in a comfortable position to finish in the top four. United have 38 points from 22 matches so far this season and are placed fourth on the points table with two games in hand to close the gap on 3rd-placed Chelsea, who have 47 points in 24 matches.

Berbatov believes United are in a decent position at the moment in terms of bagging a top-four finish this season and that Rangnick has done a good job in his time so far at the club as an interim manager.

"I think at the moment they (United) are in a great position because they are close to the teams in the top four. They have two games in hand as well to play which is a great situation for them," said the Bulgarian, who scored 48 goals in 108 appearances for United.

"Yes we have not managed to win the league in the years after Sir Alex Ferguson but let's not forget that was Sir Alex Ferguson, 25 years in charge and it's very difficult to replace the man.

But this season, I have the feeling that slowly but surely we will be in a better position than the last season. Ralph Rangnick is now in charge and he has a job to do, which at the moment I think he is doing okay. Ronaldo is also in the team, it's tough but as I said before in the coming games if we can manage to win 1-0, 1-0..which is a champion's result then they can climb higher this season," he added.

Indian football can benefit from grassroots development: Berbatov

The Bulgarian, who played for Kerala Blasters in the Indian Super League (ISL) for one season, believes Indian football has a long way to go. He has joined hands with the 'United we Play' initiative which aims to provide a platform to the young and budding footballers in India to play the game professionally and make a name for themselves.

Berbatov believes the development of young players at the grassroots level can help Indian footballers bridge the gap and play in the elite European leagues in the future.

"I think when you have young talent, and you spend time to develop them then it's only natural and fair to give them a chance to show what they can do in the men's team (Indian team)," said the former Manchester United striker.

"With the United We Play initiative we try to give them that platform. You basically say, we trust you, we want you to develop your skills and hopefully one day you can go on to play for the teams you want to play for. Indian football can benefit a lot from grassroots development and some of these players can make a jump to the European leagues soon," he added.

Jonathas (23`) gave the Odisha FC an early lead that lasted until Antonio Perosevic (64`) scored the equaliser in the second half. Javier Hernandez (75`) regained the lead for OFC with a precise finish which proved to be the winner in the end.

In the early stages of the match, Odisha FC piled a lot of pressure and was finally rewarded with an early goal from Jonathas. The cross for the goal was provided by Javier Hernandez who made room on the right flank and served the ball on a platter for the striker who tapped in from close range.

Looking for the equaliser, Hira Mondal took an attempt just before half-time but his left-footed strike went wayward. The first half ended with the Kalinga Warriors retaining their one-goal advantage. The restart saw more sluggish gameplay as neither side was able to find inspiration in the final third.

The best chance to score the equaliser fell to Antonio Perosevic two minutes before the hour mark. A long ball from deep saw the forward find room behind the defensive line but his volley had too much elevation. However, the Croatian made no mistake from a similar opportunity a few minutes later and scored the equaliser with a low finish into the bottom right corner.

Nevertheless, Odisha FC regained the lead ten minutes later through Javier Hernandez. The midfielder received a lay-off from Jonathas who turned from scorer to provider. The right-footed shot from the Spaniard took a slight deflection before swerving into the back of the net.

Javi looked to have scored another a few minutes later but Mondal managed to make a goal-line clearance to deny him the goal. The Red & Gold Brigade had four minutes of added time to find the leveller for the second time which they eventually could not, allowing OFC to bag the three points.

Odisha FC face the reigning champions Mumbai City FC in their next match at the PJN Stadium on Sunday whereas SC East Bengal play an in-form Kerala Blasters FC at the Tilak Maidan Stadium on Monday.

ISL 2021-22: Odisha FC keep semi-final hopes alive with hard-fought win vs SC East Bengal

Manchester United returned to the top of the table on Monday but not the one they were hoping for as they were named the club with the biggest transfer losses in the last decade, splashing out more than one billion euros ($1.14 billion) on players. A study published by Switzerland-based independent research group CIES Football Observatory revealed United had a net spend of 1.075 billion euros since 2012, spending 1.545 billion on transfers while making 470 million back in player sales.

United broke the Premier League transfer record to sign Paul Pogba in 2016 for 89.5 million pounds ($120.89 million) but are set to make no return on the French midfielder, who has failed to meet expectations and can leave for free at the end of the season when his contract expires.
Other costly yet unsuccessful signings include Anthony Martial, signed for 36 million pounds in 2015, and Donny van de Beek, who cost the club 40 million in 2020. Both players left on loan last month, for Sevilla and Everton, respectively.

Their local rivals Manchester City came second with a net spend of 984 million euros, splashing out more than United with 1.699 billion but bringing in 715 million from sales. Paris St Germain were third with a net spend of 941 million.

Barcelona were fourth in the list with a far lower net spend of 650 million, although the Catalans have been in financial turmoil in the last year due to an inflated wage bill, which forced them to part with all-time top scorer Lionel Messi. But while PSG, City and Barcelona at least have plenty of silverware to show for their indulgences in the last decade, United have largely underperformed on the pitch, above all since serial-winning manager Alex Ferguson left in 2013.

They have lifted only one league title since 2012, while City have won five, PSG seven and Barcelona five. United`s last trophy came in 2017, the Europa League triumph under Jose Mourinho. They are currently fourth in the Premier League, 19 points behind leaders City and on Friday were knocked out of the FA Cup by Championship (second tier) side Middlesbrough.

Bayern Munich superstar Robert Lewandowski has been a consistent performer for his club and country over the last few years. Lewandowski was recently named the Best Male Player of The Year 2021 in the Best FIFA Awards after yet another brilliant season with Bayern. Lewandowski beat Lionel Messi and Mohamed Salah to claim the top honour, winning it for the second time in a row.

Lewandowski has often earned comparisons with both Messi and Ronaldo with his remarkable goal-scoring exploits. The Polish striker has even managed to outnumber the duo with his goal-scoring but remains a huge admirer of the duo.

He recently gave his take on the rivalry between Messi and Ronaldo and explained why the Argentinian legend might not be able to maintain his goal-scoring level when he reaches Ronaldo's current age. Ronaldo is currently 36 and has remained unstoppable after his return to Manchester United.

While Ronaldo is 2 years older than Messi, he is 3.5 years older than Lewandowski. The Portuguese has managed to continue his goal-scoring exploits even at the age of 36 and is still one of the most prolific goal-scorers in the world.

“Cristiano is three and a half years older than me and still scores a lot. But he changed the club, he changed the tactics and his team is not always successful. When his team regains its balance, he can return to score goals. He used to have great numbers, impossible numbers, today they are ‘just’ very good numbers. Probably he won’t score 60 goals in a year anymore, but with 30 and 40 he still makes a difference,” Lewandowski was quoted as saying by the Polish publication on Ronaldo.

“The expectations on him are quite different. Messi is a different type of player. At Cristiano’s age it will be more difficult for him to stay at his goalscoring level,” he added.

Indian women`s football team star Kamala Devi said that announcing her retirement from the game was a very emotional decision for her. Having served Indian Football for the better part of 12 years, Kamala decided to hang up her boots earlier this week, after a fulfilling career.

"It had already been on my mind for some time, but I can tell you, it`s not an easy decision to make. It was a very emotional moment for me, and my aunt, who has always been by my side since childhood, helped a great deal. But I did feel that it was the right time for me to retire. I've played at the top level for many years now, and it`s not always easy to carry on," said Kamala Devi as per an AIFF release."My biggest critic was probably my father (laughs), but in a good way. He wanted me to do well in life, and he did not know much about the avenues one could create through football. That`s why when I was a kid, he would always tell me to stop playing so much and concentrate on studying. I guess, after a while, he also realised it was useless to keep me away from the game, but when he did see that I was getting to places through football, he did start supporting me," she added.

Regarding her future plans, Devi said that she might get into coaching and she wants to stay connected to football."Well, maybe I`ll get into coaching. But more than that, I want to give back to society and to football. I have wanted to make my own football academy in my village. There are plenty of kids who love football over there, but they do not have the right guidance. I feel, with all the experience I`ve had as a footballer, I can give something back to all of them. I have given the academy a lot of thought, and now that I have more time, I can work towards it," said Devi.

"If you love football, play it with passion. Nothing in life is easy. There are difficulties every step of the way. But it`s all about the passion and the mentality with which you approach it. If you are passionate about what you are doing, and if you are motivated and stubborn enough, then you can overcome it, no matter how difficult the task is," she added.

Scotland`s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon urged the Scottish Professional Football League to take action over Raith Rovers` signing of striker David Goodwillie, who in 2017 was ruled in a civil case to have raped a woman along with a former team mate.

Goodwillie and former Dundee United team mate David Robertson were ruled by a civil court judge to have raped a woman after a night out in 2011 and ordered to pay her 100,000 pounds ($135,590) damages.

No criminal case was ever brought against Goodwillie or Robertson after the Crown Office deemed there to be insufficient evidence. He maintains his innocence, saying they had consensual sex.

"It would be appropriate for the SPFL to take action," Sturgeon said on Wednesday. "We have to recognise footballers are role models and young boys and girls look up to footballers so there is a responsibility on football clubs to make sure those role models are positive.

"We are talking about a football player who in a civil court was found to have raped a woman, who as far as I`m aware, has never shown any remorse or reflection and I think that sends a really damaging message.

The 1.99 billion euros ($2.24 billion) media rights deal between LaLiga and private equity firm CVC is likely to open the door for similar high-stake investments across Europe’s major soccer leagues, LaLiga told Reuters on Monday.

"We are the first but won`t be the only one,” Spanish soccer league executive director Oscar Mayo told Reuters in an interview.

“Many leagues are calling us to ask if we can help them on how to structure their deal."

Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s launch of the partnership, the first of its kind in soccer with a private equity fund, Mayo added: "France is in the verge of doing so and already have the support of their government, Portugal and Italy are also close. It won`t take long to see similar deals being signed.”

Reuters reported in December that buyout funds including CVC and Bain Capital were lining up preliminary bids for a stake worth some 1.5 billion euros in the French league media rights business.

Beyond a much-needed cash injection, Ligue 1 hopes that private equity firms could help make French soccer more attractive, and double or treble revenues in five to 10 years.

"The industry have matured enough now to have the credibility to do this type of partnership," Mayo said.

"Ten years ago the clubs were losing money, lots of players were suffering with unpaid salaries, we had a debt of more than 300 million euros with the government. The industry was not ready, it was difficult even to get financial help from banks. We needed to create stability and structure through the Financial Fair Play so we could inspire trust to investors."

The 1.99 billion euro investment will secure CVC an 8.2% stake in a new company that will manage revenues from LaLiga`s broadcasting and sponsorship rights for 50 years.

LaLiga expects the total value of its business to increase from 24.2 to 33-35 billion euros in between seven to 10 years, and it will also help the clubs to invest their share of the money the right way.

The clubs will have to allocate 70% of funds for infrastructure and modernisation projects. Up to 15% can be used to sign players, with the remaining 15% for reducing debt. Each club will present their projects to LaLiga before June and it will have to be approved.

"We want to build in four years what would have taken 20 years to do in normal circumstances. We`ll grow faster than other leagues and close the gap to the English Premier League," Mayo said, explaining that first installment of 400 million euros was delivered in January and in July CVC will have paid the first 1 billion euros.

The other 1 billion will be paid in installments over the next two years.

"The clubs will be modernised, the fan experience will be better and our value will grow. The other European leagues are aware of that and will follow our path," Mayo said.

CVC has invested in Formula 1, Moto GP, rugby and tennis and it is the third time the private equity fund has tried to invest in a top European league, after separate plans with Italy`s Serie A and Germany`s Bundesliga were scrapped last year.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao are taking legal action against LaLiga over the deal. The three clubs opted out from the deal, calling it "an illegal transaction that causes irreparable damage" to Spanish football.

Brentford have signed Denmark international Christian Eriksen as a free agent for the rest of this season, the Premier League club said on Monday.

Eriksen has not played since suffering a cardiac arrest in Denmark`s opening match of the European Championship against Finland in June and has been training with his former club Ajax Amsterdam to build up his fitness.

The 29-year-old midfielder`s former club Inter Milan terminated his contract in December because the heart starter device that he had implanted is not permitted in Serie A.

Eriksen played 26 games for Inter as they won the Italian top-flight title in 2021 for the first time in 11 years.

"I am looking forward to working with Christian again. It has been a while since I last coached him and a lot has happened since then," Brentford head coach Thomas Frank, who worked with the player at Denmark Under-17 level, said in a statement.

"... We have taken an unbelievable opportunity to bring a World Class player to Brentford. He hasn`t trained with a team for seven months but has done a lot of work on his own.

"He is fit but we will need to get him match fit and I am looking forward to seeing him work with the players and staff to get back towards his highest level."

Former Tottenham Hotspur player Eriksen was given the green light by doctors last month to resume his playing career. Eriksen, capped 109 times by Denmark, said this month that he intended to return to football to play for Denmark at the World Cup.
