Juventus have signed Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic, the Italian club announced on Friday, with the deal worth up to a maximum of 80 million euros ($89.22 million), plus other charges, making it the biggest transfer of the January window so far.

The 22-year-old, who is the joint-top scorer in Serie A this season with 17 goals, has signed a deal until June 2026 in Turin.

"Juventus... has reached an agreement with Fiorentina for the definitive acquisition... of the player Dusan Vlahovic for a fee of 70.0 million euros, payable in three years," Juventus said in a statement.

"Plus the solidarity contribution envisaged by the FIFA regulations and ancillary charges for a total of 11.6 million euros. In addition, bonuses of up to a maximum of 10.0 million euros are envisaged for the achievement of growing sporting goals."

Vlahovic could make his Juve debut when they host mid-table Hellas Verona on Feb. 6 in Serie A.

He becomes the most expensive transfer of the January window so far, ahead of Spaniard Ferran Torres, who joined Barcelona from Manchester City for around 55 million euros.

Fiorentina publicly put Vlahovic up for sale after he refused their offers of a contract extension, with his deal due to expire at the end of next season.

The Serbian also becomes the most expensive January signing ever in Serie A, ahead of AC Milan`s purchase of Lucas Paqueta from Flamengo in 2019 for a reported 35 million euros.

Vlahovic became one of the most sought-after young players in Europe during four years in Florence and hit his stride last season as he scored 21 league goals and won the Serie A Best Young Player award.

He continued that form under new coach Vicenzo Italiano this season, scoring 17 goals in 21 Serie A games, a record only matched by prolific Lazio striker Ciro Immobile.

Only three players in Europe`s top-five leagues have a better record than the Serbian`s tally of 38 league goals over the last two seasons: Bayern Munich`s Robert Lewandowski (64), Borussia Dortmund`s Erling Haaland (43) and Real Madrid`s Karim Benzema (40).

The news did not go down well with Fiorentina fans, as another of their star players left for rivals Juventus, following in the footsteps of the likes of Federico Chiesa and Federico Bernardeschi.

Insulting and threatening banners were left outside the club`s Artemio Franchi stadium on Monday as reports of Vlahovic`s impending move to Turin circulated.

Juventus are fifth in Serie A, six points ahead of seventh-placed Fiorentina with a game in hand.
Massimiliano Allegri`s side have struggled for goals this season, and their record of 34 league strikes is the 11th-best in the division.

Drag flicker Gurjit Kaur and forward Sharmila Devi scored a goal apiece off penalty corners as India defeated China 2-0 to win the bronze medal in the Women`s Asia Cup hockey tournament here on Friday. In a rematch of the 2017 final that India won in a shootout, Sharmila capitalised on a rebound off a penalty corner by Gurjit that was blocked by the Chinese defence, diverted the ball into the cage to make it 1-0 for India in the 13th minute.

Six minutes later, India were 2-0 up as Gurjit blasted a powerful flick into the Chinese goal off another penalty corner.
India survived some strong attacks by China in the second half to secure their third bronze medal in the event. India have won the title twice and also lost the final as many times in the event.

On Friday, it was a neck-and-neck battle at the start to the match with both teams trying to make inroads into each other`s striking circle, showcasing good attacking and defending skills. Both India and China created potential goalscoring opportunities and even earned themselves penalty corners, but both teams missed out on converting the chances.

However, in the 13th minute, India`s effort paid off as Sharmila found herself in the right spot to push the ball in the goal after Gurjit`s powerful drag-flick was stopped by the defence line, just before the hooter sounded to signal the end of the first quarter.

Charged-up, the Indian eves started the second quarter on an attacking note, and four minutes later they earned a penalty corner, which was duly converted by Gurjit. China tried to look for an opportunity to reduce the deficit, and their efforts did get rewarded with a PC, but India captain Savita pulled off a remarkable save to deny the Chinese.

Minutes later, Navneet got an opportunity to add the third goal in the scoreline, but narrowly missed the target from the right side of the goalpost. After the ten-minute half-time break, China, who were trailing 0-2, started the third quarter on the front foot and piled pressure on India. India`s defence stood tall and denied China`s every attempt at the goal.

The latter stage of the third quarter saw both teams fight for possession. China displayed a better attack and made inroads in India`s circle. However, the Indian defence soaked the pressure and successfully defended the Chinese threat to keep the scoreline 2-0 at the end of the third quarter.

At the start of the fourth quarter, China won yet another Penalty Corner but failed to convert it. During the counterattack, Salima Tete did get the opportunity, but her reverse flick was blocked by the Chinese defence.

China, who came out all guns blazing, enjoyed the possession throughout the final quarter. They even earned three consecutive PC in the dying minutes, but a solid display by Indian defence helped the Indian eves secure third place in the Women`s Asia Cup.

Brazil had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Ecuador in a remarkable World Cup qualifier on Thursday after Felix Torres` header 15 minutes from time canceled out an early Casemiro strike. The incident-packed clash saw both sides have a player sent off inside the first 20 minutes and Brazil goalkeeper Alisson shown a red card on two occasions only for both to be rescinded after consultation with the Video Assistant referee (VAR). Ecuador had a goal chalked off and two penalty awards rescinded via VAR, including one in second-half stoppage time.

Casemiro had put Brazil ahead after five minutes when he hammered home from close range after a goalmouth scramble. Ecuador goalkeeper Alexander Dominguez was red carded after 15 minutes for a reckless challenge, and Brazil fullback Emerson Royal was dismissed five minutes later for a second yellow card following a clumsy tackle.
Five-times world champions Brazil have already qualified for this year`s finals in Qatar along with Argentina, who are playing in Chile on Thursday.

ENTHRALLING CONTEST
Ecuador`s match against Brazil ebbed and flowed but was enthralling throughout, especially in the opening half hour.
Already a goal down, Ecuador`s keeper Dominguez was shown a red card for a neck-high challenge that felled Matheus Cunha on the edge of the box. But moments later the numbers were even as Brazil`s Emerson Royal, who was shown a yellow card in the first minute for a firm challenge, got a second for a clumsy intervention.
Brazil goalkeeper Alisson looked like he would be the third player sent off after 25 minutes but following a lengthy delay Colombian referee Wilmar Roldan overturned the decision.

Ecuador, on a home pitch where they had earned 16 of their 23 points ahead of Thursday`s match, thought they might snatch all three points when they were awarded a stoppage-time penalty. Alisson felled Ayrton Preciado in attempting to punch the ball clear and was again shown a red card, but after consulting VAR the referee overturned both the penalty award and red card. The draw saw Brazil extend their unbeaten run in World Cup qualifiers to 31 games to match the South American record they set from 1954 to 1993. Bottom side Venezuela are the only team out of the running to qualify for Qatar, with most sides having four games left to play.

Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes is set to join Newcastle United for a transfer fee of 40 million euros ($45 million), a source close to the negotiations told Reuters on Wednesday even though his club Olympique Lyonnais denied any deal had been reached. Reuters understands that the 24-year-old will undergo a medical over the weekend in Brazil as he is in South America on international duty.

The source told Reuters that Newcastle agreed to all the conditions requested by Lyon and Guimaraes had agreed personal terms to join the Premier League club. Earlier on Wednesday, the French club issued a statement saying: "Olympique Lyonnais categorically denies the false information disseminated by many media reporting an agreement between Newcastle and OL for the transfer of Brazilian international midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

Premier League sides can apply for a fixture postponement only if they have a minimum of four positive COVID-19 cases in their squads, the league said on Wednesday following a meeting of representatives of all 20 clubs.

A total of 22 games have been called off this season due to COVID-19 outbreaks and the subsequent unavailability of players, with the league being criticised by some clubs for their handling of the crisis.

Earlier, a match could be postponed if one of the teams did not have 13 available outfield players -- and one goalkeeper -- "either from its squad list or its appropriately experienced Under-21 players".

"Following a club meeting today, the Premier League`s COVID-19 match postponement guidance has been updated to include a COVID-19 impact threshold," the league said in a statement.

"From now on, if a club applies to postpone a match on the grounds of insufficient players due to COVID-19, they must have a minimum of four positive cases within their squad."

The new guidelines will kick in ahead of the game between Burnley and Watford on Feb. 5. The previous rule came under heavy scrutiny, with some clubs being accused of "manipulating the system" in order to get games postponed during the busy festive period.

Tottenham Hotspsur were most vocal in their criticism following the postponement of the north London derby earlier this month, saying they were "extremely surprised" that the request from Arsenal, who had one COVID-19 case, was accepted.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel and his Arsenal counterpart Mikel Arteta had also called for more clarity around postponements related to COVID-19.

The league added: "Club applications will continue to be assessed on a case-by-case basis. The Premier League Board examines a number of factors, including the ability of a club to field a team; the status, severity and potential impact of COVID-19."

French striker Anthony Martial said he moved from Manchester United to Sevilla on a loan deal because he felt wanted by manager Julen Lopetegui and sports director Monchi.

"What convinced me to come is ... the sporting director and the coach, they showed me that they wanted me," Martial, who has joined the LaLiga club until the end of the season, told a news conference at his unveiling on Wednesday.

"I wanted to come so I could play and show what I can do in the team."

The 26-year-old forward, who joined United in 2015 but asked to leave Old Trafford in December after struggling for opportunities this season, feels he is ready to help out straight away.

"In the last few months I have been training a lot. I hope to be able to train soon with my team mates and work well with them to fight for the competitions we`re still in," Martial said, explaining that he does not care in which position Lopetegui plays him.

"I trained hard to be ready and if the coach wants me to play, I`ll do it now. The most important thing for me is to play, it doesn`t matter where. I want to bring my experience and help the team to keep winning."

Ten-man Mumbai City FC failed to snap their winless run as they were held to a 1-1 draw by NorthEast United FC in the Indian Super League at the PJN Stadium in Fatorda on Tuesday.

The result means Mumbai remained winless in their last six games, moving back to the top-four but only just with 18 points from 12 games, level on points with Chennaiyin FC who take on Bengaluru FC on Wednesday.

NorthEast United remained at 10th place in the table, having 10 points from 14 games. For Mumbai, things got worse as Amey Ranawade was shown a red card in stoppage time after he picked up his second yellow card.

ISL: Mumbai City draws against NorthEast in winless run

At least eight people died and 38 were injured when fans stormed a soccer stadium hosting an Africa Cup of Nations match in Cameroon`s capital on Monday, the government said. Images shared on social media, which Reuters could not immediately authenticate, showed a panicked crowd trying to squeeze through a narrow entrance gate at the newly built Olembe stadium in Yaounde that was hosting a round of 16 game between Cameroon and Comoros.
One video showed dozens of fans scrambling over the stadium fence as a police officer walked by.

The stampede comes as a heavy blow for the tournament, which had grown in excitement on the pitch in recent days thanks to some match upsets but which was under scrutiny for a lack of readiness beforehand.
COVID-19 and insecurity caused by a separatist insurgency also complicated preparations. Work on the 60,000-seat Olembe Stadium continued right up to the start of Africa`s top soccer tournament, prompting the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the continent`s soccer governing body, to hold an emergency meeting to discuss cancelling the competition altogether.

"CAF is currently investigating the situation and trying to get more details on what transpired. We are in constant communication with Cameroon government and the Local Organising Committee," it said in a statement.

THE SHOCK, THE WEIGHT
High school teacher Vanessa Tchouanzi had come to see the match on Monday. She was barely able to get her words out as she recounted her experience over the phone to Reuters.
Tchouanzi tried to enter the stadium with a friend, but said that gate attendees were too overwhelmed by the mass of people to check tickets. As fans rushed the entrance, Tchouanzi and her friend were knocked to the ground. A bystander helped Tchouanzi escape, but her friend was trampled to death, she said.

"She couldn`t take the shock, the weight of all those people," Tchouanzi said through a flood of tears.
The government did not give any information on the cause of the crush or whether fans were allowed into the stadium without tickets. It is not clear why the match went ahead after the disaster. Following a low turnout in the first round games at brand new stadiums, Cameroon authorities have thrown open stadium gates, organised mass transport and given out free tickets to lure fans.

Brazilian soccer great Pele was discharged from hospital on Thursday after undergoing two days of treatment for cancer, the Sao Paulo clinic that treated him said. Pele, who had a colon tumor removed last year, has been undergoing chemotherapy in the months since.

The 81-year old was admitted to hospital on Wednesday and "was discharged on Thursday and is in a clinically stable condition," said the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo. Sports TV network ESPN earlier said the former Santos and New York Cosmos player was diagnosed with a tumor in the intestine, one in the liver and the beginning of another in a lung, and would undergo new exams to find other possible cancer spots. The hospital only mentioned his treatment for the "colon tumor." Pele`s business manager did not confirm or deny the ESPN report.

The three-time World Cup winner underwent an operation to remove a colon tumor in September 2021 and spent nearly a month under care. He was hospitalized again last month for chemotherapy sessions and discharged on Dec. 23.

Widely considered one of the greatest footballers of all time, Pele has suffered from a series of health issues in recent years, including a hip surgery that left him with recurring pain and trouble walking unaided. He has reduced his public appearances, but remains active on social media.

Just moments after the hospital released its statement, Pele posted a tribute to Elza Soares, the Brazilian singer who died earlier on Thursday. Soares was married to Garrincha, Pele`s former team mate who he played alongside when Brazil won the World Cup in 1958 and 1962.

Pele also won the World Cup in 1970, as well as countless trophies with club sides Santos and New York Cosmos.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel downplayed his side`s subdued performance in a 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League, attributing their lack of cutting edge to frustration at slipping up in the title race.

Chelsea`s players were far from their best in the draw, which extended their winless run in the league to four games and left them 12 points behind leaders Manchester City, having played a game more.

"After the loss against City and the gap opening up, playing two days later on a Tuesday again, I could see and feel from myself and the team some emotions took over, maybe frustration, disappointment and whatever and it was hard for us to reach our top level on this particular day," Tuchel told reporters ahead of Chelsea`s match against Tottenham Hotspur.

"It was the very first time so when it happens, we should not make a big deal out of it."

Chelsea next play host to Spurs, who they have already beaten on three occasions this season, having recorded a 3-0 aggregate win in the two-legged League Cup semi-final this month and a Premier League win against them in September.

However, Tuchel insisted that his side`s recent record against their London rivals does not give them a psychological advantage heading into Sunday`s tie.

"It is a big rivalry, we know this," Tuchel said. "We have played them three times in a short period of time."They know what we do, and what they do. We have managed to beat them twice and we will try to again."It is not about having whatever advantages. If we are philosophical about it, we need to have the right attitude to deliver a top performance."

Manchester United rode their luck before burying luckless Brentford with a second-half goal blitz to claim a 3-1 away victory on Wednesday and boost their challenge for a top-four finish in the Premier League.

A United win did not look likely as Brentford dominated the first half but the visitors were clinical after the break with goals by Anthony Elanga, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford securing a flattering victory.

Brentford should have been comfortably ahead by halftime but spurned numerous chances with Mathias Jensen twice denied by the outstretched leg of United keeper David De Gea.

Several other opportunities went begging and they were made to pay for their profligacy when Elanga nodded United in front in the 55th minute and Greenwood tapped in after a counter-attack before substitute Rashford rifled in his side`s third in the 77th minute to deflate Brentford.

Ivan Toney pulled a goal back from close range with five minutes remaining but it was scant consolation for the hosts who slumped to a third successive defeat.

Cristiano Ronaldo returned to United`s starting line-up after recovering from injury but was subdued and reacted angrily after being substituted in the second half.

United remained in seventh spot but moved level on 35 points with sixth-placed Arsenal and are only two behind West Ham United who occupy fourth.

"First half was not good in all aspects of the game," United manager Ralf Rangnick said. "In the second half we were more urgent, attacking higher up the pitch and taking the right decisions in the counter attack and we scored, which is the big difference."
Home manager Thomas Frank, whose side are 14th and 10 points above the bottom three, was baffled at the outcome.

"We destroyed them in the first half, they didn`t have a sniff, three huge chances and there could only have been one winner of this game," he said.
"They are unbelievably lucky. Our intensity killed them."

CHILLY NIGHT

There was a buzz of anticipation around Brentford`s impressive Community Stadium with the west London club hosting United for the first time 1947 -- the crowd warming up a chilly night with a rendition of their "Hey Jude" anthem.

Frank`s side have acquitted themselves well against the big boys in their first Premier League campaign, beating Arsenal on a memorable opening night, holding Liverpool and unluckily losing to Chelsea. They battered a sloppy United in the first half too.

Jensen, one of five Danes in the Brentford starting line-up, twice had the goal at his mercy but his weak side-footed efforts were saved by De Gea.

Ronaldo was a virtual spectator and the closest United came before the break was a swerving effort by Diogo Dalot that flew wide of the post.

United started the second half with more urgency and a Ronaldo header from Fernandes`s cross glanced the crossbar.
Brentford went straight back on the counter-attack and Jensen was played in by Toney but again failed to beat De Gea.

United struck when Fred`s lofted ball found Elanga whose first touch flicked the ball up for him to head past Bees keeper Jonas Lossl who was handed a first Premier League start.

Rangnick`s side doubled their lead when Ronaldo chested the ball off to Fernandes who unselfishly squared to give Greenwood the easiest of tap-ins.

Rashford`s superb finish sealed the points before Toney at least gave the home fans something to cheer.

Premier League: Manchester United ride on luck to seal 3-1 victory over Brentford

Steven Bergwijn scored two goals deep into stoppage time to snatch Tottenham a dramatic 3-2 victory at Leicester in the Premier League's latest-ever comeback win.

The Netherlands forward looked to have earned a draw for Spurs by driving home from close range in the fifth minute of added-on time on Wednesday, yet there was more drama to come.

Soon after the restart, Leicester lost possession, Harry Kane played a perfectly weighted ball behind the Leicester defense and Bergwijn ran onto it, rounded goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and converted his shot off the post from an acute angle in the seventh extra minute.

"Wow that was madness," Kane wrote on Twitter alongside a picture of him with Bergwijn in the locker room.
"Football eh!?!?"

The previous latest comeback to win came in one of the Premier League's most famous matches, when Manchester City scored in the 92nd and 94th minutes to beat Queens Park Rangers 3-2 and clinch the title in May 2012.

Kane had scored his customary goal against Leicester ? it's now 18 in 17 matches against the team from the Midlands ? to equalize for Tottenham in the 38th, canceling out the 24th-minute opener by Patson Daka.

James Maddison then looked to have won it for Leicester after surging into the penalty area and sending in a shot that deflected into the net off sprawling Tottenham defender Japhet Tanganga in the 76th. It was the playmaker's eighth goal in his last 11 matches in all competitions. Then came Bergwijn's late goals.

"I think we showed today that we don't want to give up. Never," Tottenham manager Antonio Conte said.
"The players know very well what our philosophy must be. We must fight to the end and try to also get a result.

"Today to lose this game was not right. We created many many chances. We were unlucky when we conceded. At the end we were very good. And we believed to the end. We wanted three points and we deserved them."

Tottenham climbed above north London rival Arsenal into fifth place and is a point behind fourth-place West Ham having played three fewer games.

Leicester was returning to league action after seeing matches against Everton and Burnley get postponed over the past week because of COVID-19 cases among its opponents.

"We had 93 minutes of really good work against a really good side, with top players at the top end of the field," Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers said.
"We had to fight all the way through the game. We had moments of quality and resilience.

"We are disappointed to concede the equalizer. If we win a couple of duels, the game is over. But we didn't. You then have to take your point. So to lose the game ... It is all on us. We can have no complaints. We gift wrapped three goals and presented them the three points."

Borussia Dortmund have been eliminated from the DFB Cup last 16 after the reigning champions lost 2-1 away to Bundesliga 2 leaders FC St. Pauli on Tuesday.

A first-half strike from Etienne Amenyido and an Axel Witsel own goal helped second-tier St. Pauli to a 2-1 win and a place in the quarter-finals for the first time in 16 years.

Dortmund had won their previous eight DFB Cup games before facing Bundesliga 2 leaders, Pauli, but BVB were quickly up against it at a lively Millerntor-Stadion where Etienne Amenyido connected with Marcel Hartel`s cut-back before finishing from close range.

The Black & Yellows registered 67 per cent possession in the opening half, but needed to be quicker and sharper to carve open additional gilt-edged opportunities. Instead, St. Pauli converted their second chance to double their advantage, with Witsel unluckily turning Burgstaller`s cross from the right into his own net.

Medic handled Hummels` cross, to which referee Osmers went over to the monitor to review the incident and pointed to the spot. Haaland slotted the ensuing penalty into the bottom right corner (58`).

The five-time winners subsequently went in search of an all-important equaliser, however, tame Jude Bellingham and Donyell Malen efforts aside, Die Schwarzgelben never seriously threatened Smarsch`s goal as Pauli comfortably held on for a famous scalp.

The five-time winners subsequently went in search of an all-important equaliser, however, tame Jude Bellingham and Donyell Malen efforts aside, Die Schwarzgelben never seriously threatened Smarsch`s goal as Pauli comfortably held on for a famous scalp. Notably, Dortmund have either gone out at the last-16 stage or won the competition in the last nine seasons.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel on Monday refused to single out misfiring striker Romelu Lukaku for further criticism following his display in their Premier League loss to Manchester City.

Chelsea were beaten 1-0 by league leaders City on Saturday and Tuchel had expressed frustration with Lukaku`s performance after the match but said on Monday that it was wrong to pin the blame for the team`s performance on a single player.

"I think we do everything to help (Lukaku)," the manager told a news conference ahead of Chelsea`s trip to Brighton & Hove Albion on Tuesday.

"This is what we do for any player. This is a team sport and it`s not about 10 players serving one player. It is not Chelsea and it is not football. Every player is there to serve the team. This is the highest principle and won`t change.

"We expected more from all our offensive players in the last match. I think we had enough offensive actions, transitions, to hurt Man City more than we did."

The defeat sent Chelsea down to third in the standings, 13 points behind City and two behind second-placed Liverpool and Tuchel added that easing the pressure of expectation on Lukaku would be key to the striker finding his best form.

"He`s a key player, so there will always be pressure but not more pressure than he puts on himself," the manager said. "We need to find a mix between all the expectations, the pressure, and to be relaxed enough to play your best game.

"It`s not only about pushing, squeezing, demands, it`s also about feeling peace and being relaxed on the pitch. Things will fall into place when we keep on working hard and this is what we will keep on doing."

The German would not be drawn on whether the title race was already over, saying that his team would never give up.
"We have to admit that City is in a very strong place," Tuchel said.

"The second thing is we will never give up, never never never, until the race is over. I told you many weeks before we are in a good place as we are in the middle of the race. Well, maybe not anymore but we are in the race.

"This is what we have to show now, a relentless spirit and it cannot lower our ambition and commitment in how we play, train and what we give."
