Indonesia witnessed one of the worst football disasters in recent times as a stampede at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in East Java left 125 people dead and hundreds injured. A tragedy unfolded at the stadium after the Indonesian police decided to use tear gas to bring the crowd in control following fans' invasion of the pitch.

Persebaya Surabaya defeated bitter rivals Arema FC 3-2 in a high-voltage derby on Saturday before hundreds of Arema fans stormed onto the pitch resulting in chaos. The angry fans reportedly clashed with the police officers on the ground, prompting the security officials to fire tear gas shots at the crowd on the ground and in the stands.

The usage of tear gas triggered a massive stampede in the stadium as fans panicked and tried to escape through the exit gates. There was a huge accumulation of fans at the exit gates as many got trampled to death while others succumbed due to suffocation.

Several videos surfaced on social media showing fans panicking in the stadium and trying to get out. In shocking footage in the aftermath of the deadly stampede, the bodies of scores of fans were seen lying on the ground while some injured were seen getting escorted out.

What do FIFA rules state about the use of tear gas to control crowds at stadiums?

FIFA clearly mentions in its security guidelines that the stewards or police officers deployed at the stadium to ensure public order are not allowed to use firearms or 'crowd control gas'.

While the use of tear gas was a clear violation of FIFA guidelines and resulted in deadly consequences in Indonesia on Saturday, there was another rule violation during the stampede at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang.

As per FIFA guidelines, the stewards and security officers present inside the stadium need to always ensure that the exit gates, emergency exits and other routes remain unobstructed at all times. However, that was not the case during the stampede at the Kanjuruhan Stadium.

Indonesia stadium stampede: What do FIFA rules state about use of tear gas to control crowds?

FIFA, the international governing body of football, has called the deadly stampede at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Indonesia a 'tragedy beyond comprehension'. At least 125 people died and around 180 were left injured in a stampede at the stadium after local club Arema FC lost the match to bitter rival Persebaya Surabaya.

The stampede took place after the Indonesian police used tear gas on the Arema FC supporters, who had invaded the pitch following their team's 2-3 loss against their arch-rivals. As per reports, a group of supporters also attacked police officers present in the stadium which prompted the officials to use tear gas to bring the situation under control.

The use of tear gas triggered a stampede inside the stadium as fans tried to flee through two narrow exit gates. There were thousands of fans inside the stadium for the game and they were seen trying to exit in panic, resulting in a deadly stampede and suffocation.

FIFA has also demanded a report from the Indonesian football association PSSI after the deadly stampede. PSSI secretary General Yunus Nusi confirmed that FIFA had communicated with the Indonesian football association and urged them to submit a report after their investigation.

In its safety regulation, FIFA states that tear gas should not be used by police or stewards on supporters during football matches. However, in Indonesia, where football hooliganism often takes the centre stage, heavy-handed policing is a common sight at the stadiums and outside.

An official had earlier said that at least 174 people were killed but the toll was later revised downwards to 125 as officials grappled to collect data of casualties and injured from hospitals where the injured were rushed.

'Dark day for football': FIFA president reacts to tragic stadium stampede in Indonesia

The former president of El Salvador's soccer federation was sentenced on Thursday (September 29) to 16 months in U.S. prison after pleading guilty to a charge arising from a global soccer corruption probe involving the payment of bribes to stage and broadcast matches.

Reynaldo Vasquez, 66, the former president of the Federacion Salvadorena de Futbol (FESFUT), or the Salvadoran Football Federation, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Pamela Chen in Brooklyn, New York. In pleading guilty last year to a racketeering conspiracy charge, Vasquez acknowledged receiving a $350,000 bribe in 2012 from Miami-based Media World, which brokers rights to broadcasts targeting Spanish speakers, to induce FESFUT to arrange media and marketing rights to qualifier matches for the 2018 World Cup.

Vasquez' case is part of a sprawling probe into corruption at FIFA, the world's soccer governing body, that has yielded 27 guilty pleas and two convictions at trial. Breon Peace, the top federal prosecutor in Brooklyn, said in a statement that Vasquez and the other defendants "disgraced themselves by lining their pockets with hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes, at the expense of a beautiful sport."

Rights group Open Stadiums have called on FIFA to throw Iran out of the World Cup in Qatar in November because of the country's treatment of women. In a letter sent to FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Thursday (September 29), the organisation said Iranian authorities continued to refuse to allow female fans access to games inside the country despite pressure from the game's governing body.

"The Iranian FA is not only an accomplice of the crimes of the regime, it is a direct threat to the security of female fans in Iran and wherever our national team plays in the world. Football should be a safe space for us all," the letter said. "That is why, as Iranian football fans, it is with an extremely heavy heart that we have to raise our deepest concern about Iran's participation in the upcoming FIFA World Cup."

"Why would FIFA give the Iranian state and its representatives a global stage, while it not only refuses to respect basic human rights and dignities, but is currently torturing and killing its own people? "Where are the principles of FIFA's statues in this regard? "Therefore, we ask FIFA, based on Articles 3 and 4 of its statutes, to immediately expel Iran from the World Cup 2022 in Qatar."

The articles cited cover the issues of human rights and non-discrimination based on gender, race, religion and other matters, with breaches punishable by suspension or expulsion from the global body. Neither FIFA nor Iran's FA immediately responded to a Reuters request for comment. The call comes as protests continued in several cities across Iran on Thursday against the death of young woman in police custody, state and social media reported, as a human rights group said at least 83 people had been killed in nearly two weeks of demonstrations.

Iran President Ebrahim Raisi has described the unrest as the latest in a series of moves against Iran by hostile Western powers since the 1979 Islamic revolution. Open Stadiums have campaigned over the last decade for women to be allowed to attend football matches in Iran, but with only limited success. But there has been minimal progress since, with female fans barred from entering Iran's World Cup qualifying game against Lebanon in Mashad in March, with video emerging of female supporters being pepper sprayed outside the stadium. The Carlos Queiroz-coached national team played friendly matches during the recent international break against Uruguay and Senegal in Austria, with both games played behind closed doors over security concerns.

Iran are due to appear at their sixth World Cup finals and have been drawn to face England, Wales and the United States in Qatar.

Women's rights group urges FIFA to kick Iran out of Qatar World Cup

For the football World Cup 2022, Denmark's kit supplier Hummel made a statement with the designs of the jerseys and protested against the hosts Qatar for the alleged human rights record.

Hummel said on Wednesday (September 28) that it will hide its logo on the jerseys to be worn at the upcoming showpiece event as they "don't wish to be visible during a tournament that has cost thousands of people their lives".

FIFA World Cup 2022 is set to start in Qatar on 20 November and the final match of the event is scheduled to be held on December 18, which also is Qatar National Day.

Notably, FIFA's World Cup rules prohibit political statements on the jerseys of the team.

In a statement, Hummel said, "With the Danish national team’s new jerseys, we wanted to send a dual message. They are not only inspired by Euro 92, paying tribute to Denmark’s greatest football success, but also a protest against Qatar and its human rights record."

"That’s why we've toned down all the details for Denmark's new World Cup jerseys, including our logo and iconic chevrons. We don't wish to be visible during a tournament that has cost thousands of people their lives."

"We support the Danish national team all the way, but that isn't the same as supporting Qatar as a host nation. We believe that sport should bring people together. And when it doesn't, we want to make a statement," the statement added.

In the past decade, Qatar has been at the centre of criticism for the alleged treatment of migrant workers, which were required by the authorities to build stadiums, roads, hotels and other infrastructure.

But Qatar says that much of the criticism is unfair and that major reforms have changed conditions for hundreds of thousands of migrant workers.

They are not only inspired by Euro 92, paying tribute to Denmark’s greatest football success, but also a protest against Qatar and its human rights record." "That’s why we've toned down all the details for Denmark's new World Cup jerseys, including our logo and iconic chevrons. We don't wish to be visible during a tournament that has cost thousands of people their lives." "We support the Danish national team all the way, but that isn't the same as supporting Qatar as a host nation. We believe that sport should bring people together. And when it doesn't, we want to make a statement," the statement added. It added, "While we support the Danish national team all the way, this shouldn't be confused with support for a tournament that has cost thousands of people their lives," the company said. 'Colour of mourning': Denmark's World Cup 'protest' kit is a statement against Qatar's human rights record

Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri is one of the greatest to have played for the country. He has been a great servant of Indian football and has carried the team on his shoulders over the years. Chhetri is currently India's all-time top-scorer and is still going strong despite turning 38 in August this year.

Chhetri, who made his debut for the Indian team in 2005, had begun his professional career at Indian club Mohun Bagan in 2002. He went on to play for some of the best Indian clubs throughout his career and is currently playing his trade for Bengaluru FC in the Indian Super League (ISL).

Reminding fans of Chhetri's fantastic credentials at the international level, FIFA took to social media to honour the Indian skipper.

"You know all about Ronaldo and Messi. Now get the definitive story of the third highest scoring active men's international. Sunil Chhetri | Captain Fantastic is available on FIFA+ now," FIFA wrote on Twitter, announcing a docuseries on the Indian captain.

The 38-year-old striker has won everything there is to be in Indian football but still remains hungry for more.

'Captain fantastic': FIFA honours Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri with docuseries on his career

FIFA's partners and World Cup sponsors must urge world soccer's governing body and the Qatari government to compensate migrant workers who suffered while preparing the nation for the event, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and FairSquare said on Tuesday.

Qatar has faced intense criticism from human rights groups over its treatment of migrant workers, who along with other foreigners comprise the bulk of the country's population. Qatari authorities did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters about the rights groups' report. The government of Qatar has said that its labour system is still a work in progress, but denied a 2021 Amnesty report that thousands of migrant workers were still being exploited.

Last week, a YouGov survey of more than 17,000 fans from 15 countries -- 10 of them European -- commissioned by Amnesty showed 73% of respondents would support a proposal for FIFA to compensate migrant workers, while 10% opposed it.

Minky Worden, the director of global initiatives at Human Rights Watch, said that sponsors should use their "considerable leverage" to apply pressure on FIFA and Qatar to fulfill their responsibilities to workers.

"Brands buy rights to sponsor the World Cup because they want to be associated with joy, fair competition and spectacular human achievement on the field -- not rampant wage theft and the deaths of workers who made the World Cup possible," said Worden.

The three human rights organisations said they had written to FIFA's 14 corporate partners and World Cup sponsors in July and that four of them -- AB InBev/Budweiser, Adidas, Coca-Cola, and McDonald's had indicated their support for ensuring remedy for workers.

Ten other sponsors -- Visa, Hyundai-Kia, Wanda Group, Qatar Energy, Qatar Airways, Vivo, Hisense, Mengniu, Crypto and Byju's -- have not responded to written requests to discuss tournament-related abuses, the organisations said in a statement https://www.hrw.org/news/2022/09/20/fifa-world-cup-all-sponsors-should-back-remedies-workers.

In May, Amnesty and other rights groups had called on FIFA to earmark $440 million to compensate migrant workers in Qatar. FIFA said then that it was assessing Amnesty's proposition and that workers had received payments of a total $22.6 million as of December 2021, with an additional $5.7 million committed by contractors.

It added last week that a wide range of measures had been implemented in recent years to improve protection for workers in Qatar, which will host the World Cup from Nov. 20.

The fresh-faced AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey recently held a discussion with FIFA chief Gianni Infantino to discuss plans and strategies to further the cause of Indian football on a global scale. The former goalkeeper was accompanied by Secretary General Dr. Shaji Prabhakaran during his interaction with Infantino.

AIFF bigwigs hold 'constructive discussions' with FIFA chief regarding development of Indian football

FIFA has seemingly lifted the ban that it had imposed on the All India Football Federation (AIFF). The ban was levelled on AIFF, citing undue third-party influence after the Supreme Court of the country moved to introduce a committee to oversee the functioning of the AIFF.

The ban forced Indian-origin clubs to pull out of continental tournaments that fall under the umbrella of FIFA. This exacted a heavy toll on clubs like Sree Gokulam Kerala FC and ATK Mohun Bagan, who were slated to compete in the AFC Women's Club Championship and AFC Cup 2022 (Inter-Zone semifinals), respectively.

Most notably, however, the ban placed on the AIFF made it impossible for the country to host the upcoming Under-17 Women's World Cup. However, all these embargoes have since been repealed as FIFA moved to lift the ban, they conveyed the same to AIFF in a letter, which was subsequently shared by AIFF on social media shortly thereafter.

"The Bureau of the Council decided on 25 August 2022 to lift the suspension of the AIFF with immediate effect. As a consequence, the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2022 scheduled to take place on 11-30 October 2022 can be held in India as planned.

"Finally, as foreseen in the decision of the Bureau of 14 August 2022, a further communication to the AIFF will follow shortly with respect to the next steps to be taken towards holding elections. Kindly take note that FIFA and the AFC will continue to monitor the situation and will support the AIFF in organising the elections in a timely manner," read the letter that FIFA sent to AIFF.

AIFF writes to FIFA, requests to lift ban after Supreme Court dissolves Committee of Administrators

FIFA's ban on the All India Football Federation (AIFF) can be lifted soon after the Supreme Court of India on Monday (August 22) dissolved the three-member Committee of Administrators (CoA) to hand back the charge to the current administration of the board led by acting general secretary Sunando Dhar.

FIFA had imposed a ban on AIFF due to third-party interference last week and said it won't lift the ban until the board's administration is once again completely in charge of the national football body and the CoA is repealed. FIFA's key demand has now been met by the AIFF after CoA's dismissal by the Supreme Court.

As per a report in The Indian Express, the Supreme Court of India bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud passed an oral order on Monday demanding the CoA to hand over the baton back to the AIFF administration. “The day-to-day management of AIFF shall be looked after by the AIFF administration led by the acting secretary general exclusively," the SC bench said.

"As a consequence, the CoA will cease to be in charge," the bench added confirming CoA's ouster from AIFF. The SC had appointed a three-member Committee of Administrators to run the daily affairs at AIFF after dismissing former president Praful Patel, who illegally continued to hold his position despite completing three four-years terms.

However, FIFA has a strict stance against third-party interference in the running of a national football federation. The world governing body issued a warning to the AIFF after CoA's appointment before imposing a ban last week. However, the Supreme Court's latest order can see FIFA revoke its ban on Indian football.

FIFA had said it will lift the ban on AIFF only after the ‘repeal of the CoA mandate in full’ and when the board's administration is fully in charge of its day-to-day affairs. FIFA's ban has already had a catastrophic impact on Indian clubs as Gokulam Kerala's women's team was last week ruled out of the AFC Club Championship due to the ban.

Sports Ministry reaches out to FIFA and AFC to allow Gokulam FC and ATK Mohun Bagan to compete in tournaments

FIFA has suspended India's football federation AIFF. The move will have serious ramifications on Indian footballers. Palki Sharma tells you about the impact of FIFA's decision on Indian football.

Gravitas: Indian football federation embarrassed by FIFA ban

Indian football suffered a big dent on Monday (August 15) as the sport's apex governing body, FIFA, suspended the Indian federation with immediate effect due to undue influence from third parties. Thus, this is a major setback for Indian football as the decision means that they won't be able to host the 2022 Under-17 Women's FIFA World Cup, to be played in the country from October 11-30.

"The Bureau of the FIFA Council has unanimously decided to suspend the All India Football Federation (AIFF) with immediate effect due to undue influence from third parties, which constitutes a serious violation of the FIFA Statutes.' said the body in its statement.

"The suspension will be lifted once an order to set up a committee of administrators to assume the powers of the AIFF Executive Committee has been repealed and the AIFF administration regains full control of the AIFF’s daily affairs." added FIFA.

What does the ban mean for India?

Losing the hosting rights for the forthcoming U-17 Women's World Cup is a huge blow in itself. However, there are more woes for Indian football following FIFA's latest ban. Whether it the Indian men's or the women's national teams, none of them can play against other national football teams even at the age-group levels. In addition, the decision makes the Indian football clubs not eligible to take part in AFC Women Club Championship, AFC Cup and the AFC Champions League competitions.

The only breather is that domestic competitions such as the Indian Super League and the I-League can proceed as per schedule.

How can the ban be lifted?

Following the big decision, FIFA has explained the due process to the AIFF. Thus, the ball is in AIFF's court as the ban will be lifted once the Indian football federation falls in lieu of the FIFA Statutes.

FIFA suspends AIFF with immediate effect: All you need to know about the ban and how it can be lifted

Tuesday (August 16) will go down as the 'Black Day' in the Indian football folklore after the All India Football Federation (AIFF)'s embarrassing crisis finally turned into a nightmare with decisive action from FIFA. The interference of the Supreme Court of India proved costly for the Indian football board as the apex world governing body FIFA decided to ban AIFF with immediate effect due to 'undue influence from third parties'.

FIFA has always maintained a strict stance against any third-party interference in the running of a national football federation and it had issued a prior warning to the AIFF before putting the final nail in the coffin on Tuesday. However, the Supreme Court-appointed committee of administrators (CoA) probably underestimated the gravity of the situation leading to the ban.

The threat of a potential ban from FIFA was looming ever since the ouster of former AIFF president Praful Patel, who was removed after he held the office despite completing his term. SC appointed a CoA to run the day-to-day affairs at the board which was a violation of FIFA's statutes.

The ban can prove to be catastrophic for Indian football and the ripple effects can be felt in the long term as well. It can cause way more damage than anticipated as India stands at not only losing the hosting rights of the upcoming FIFA Women's U-17 World Cup but also all clubs from the country will be barred from participating in any AFC or FIFA-governed competitions.

What FIFA's ban on AIFF means for Indian football?

The ban from FIFA means all Indian football teams across age groups won't be able to take part in any tournament at the international level. The Indian men's team was set to play two friendlies against Vietnam (September 24) and Singapore (September 27) later this year but the matches stand cancelled unless the ban is revoked.

India has also lost the hosting rights of the upcoming FIFA Women's U-17 World Cup 2022. After successfully delivering the men's U-17 World Cup in 2017, the country was expected to stage another spectacle this year. However, with just two months left for the tournament, the ban has cost India the hosting rights.

None of the Indian cubs will now be allowed to take part in any FIFA or AFC-related tournaments. Indian club Gokulam Kerala women are scheduled to play their AFC Women's Club Championship opener against Sogdiana-W in Qarshi in Uzbekistan. However, the match stands suspended if AIFF's ban is not revoked at the earliest.

ATK Mohun Bagan are also likely to face a huge setback as they were scheduled to play the AFC Cup Inter-Zonal semi-finals on September 7. However, now they won't be able to take part in the competition due to the ban from FIFA. India can continue conducting its domestic leagues ISL and I-League without any issues but they won't be recognised by AFC or FIFA.

"AIFF representatives and club teams are therefore no longer entitled to take part in the international competition until the suspension is lifted. This also means that neither the AIFF nor any of its members or officials may benefit from any development programmes, courses or training from FIFA and/or the AFC," FIFA said in its letter to AIFF.

The ban will also see AIFF lose on the financial front as the Indian football body will no more be eligible to receive any grants from FIFA. The world body reportedly issues a grant of around USD 50,000 annually for AIFF which will be revoked if the ban stays for long.

Tuesday (August 16) will go down as the 'Black Day' in the Indian football folklore after the All India Football Federation (AIFF)'s embarrassing crisis finally turned into a nightmare with decisive action from FIFA.

The Centre on Tuesday sought an urgent hearing in the Supreme Court on the All India Football Federation matter in the wake of FIFA suspending India for "undue influence from third parties" and stripping the country of the right to host the Under-17 Women's World Cup.

The country is scheduled to host the FIFA tournament from October 11-30. A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and AS Bopanna was told by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, that "important development" has taken place and FIFA has sent a letter suspending India which is in public domain and needs to be brought on record.

The bench told Mehta that the matter is listed for Wednesday and it would try to take it up as a first matter.
Mehta said FIFA was in Geneva and it has taken certain decisions which are important developments for the country and need to be brought before the court.

"I request that the AIFF matter pending before the court be urgently heard", he said.

Centre seeks urgent hearing of AIFF case after FIFA suspends India, Supreme Court to hear on Aug 17

Football's premier ruling body FIFA on Tuesday decided to suspend All India Football Federation (AIFF) with immediate effect for colluding with third parties and influencing the footballing operations in the country. The suspension had been looming for a long time and FIFA stated that the decision to ban AIFF was taken unanimously.

"The Bureau of the FIFA Council has unanimously decided to suspend the All India Football Federation (AIFF) with immediate effect due to undue influence from third parties, which constitutes a serious violation of the FIFA Statutes.' said the body in its statement.

As a result of the ban, the upcoming FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup scheduled to take place from October 11-30 will remain suspended. FIFA added that the future of the tournament will be decided in due time and if required, the matter may be forwarded to Bureau of the Council.

FIFA added that the suspension will only be lifted when the Indian Footballing Federation gets its act together.

"The suspension will be lifted once an order to set up a committee of administrators to assume the powers of the AIFF Executive Committee has been repealed and the AIFF administration regains full control of the AIFF’s daily affairs." added FIFA.

As reported extensively by WION, AIFF is currently in turmoil as the board is being run by the Supreme Court (SC)-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) after former president Praful Patel's ouster.

After the Supreme Court of India directed the AIFF to conduct elections in the national federation, FIFA issued its warning. In a strongly worded letter in association with Asian Football Confederation (AFC), FIFA, earlier this month remarked:

"AIFF was to call for a special general assembly in the first week of August 2022 to approve the new statute worked upon with FIFA, the AFC and the Indian football community. Unfortunately, we have been informed that the Supreme Court’s hearing held yesterday on the situation of the AIFF allegedly resulted in deviations to the aforementioned roadmap."

It further added, “If this is considered to be true, it would irrefutably jeopardise the mutual understanding which was displayed so far on the steps forward."

A ban from FIFA is expected to be catastrophic for Indian football as the national teams will not be able to take part in any international tournament. The ISL and I-League clubs who are set to compete in FIFA-governed tournaments will also be barred from participating in them. However, the most heartbreaking news will be the cancellation of host duties for the U-17 Women's World Cup. It can set back the women's game another 10-15 years.

FIFA suspends All India Football Federation; U-17 Women's World Cup gets suspended as well

FIFA has suspended the All India Football Federation (AIFF) with immediate effect due to "undue influence from third parties". According to a statement by FIFA, "The suspension will be lifted once an order to set up a committee of administrators to assume the powers of the AIFF Executive Committee has been repealed and the AIFF administration regains full control of the AIFF's daily affairs".

FIFA suspends All India Football Federation (AIFF)

The All India Football Federation (FIFA) faces a potential threat of a ban from the world governing body FIFA due to third-party 'influence'. AIFF is currently in turmoil as the board is being run by the Supreme Court (SC)-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) after former president Praful Patel's ouster.

FIFA has threatened to suspend the AIFF and also strip India of the hosting rights for the U-17 Women's World Cup later this year. India are scheduled to host the U-17 Women's World Cup in October this year but might lose the hosting rights for the tournament if FIFA decides to go ahead and ban the organisation.

The warning from FIFA had come after the Supreme Court of India directed the AIFF to conduct elections in the national federation. Indian football team skipper Sunil Chettri, who had earlier said a FIFA ban can prove to be 'catastrophic' for Indian football, was recently once again asked about AIFF's potential suspension.

Speaking at his Indian Super League (ISL) club Bengaluru FC's press conference, Indian captain Chettri advised his teammates to focus on the game and not worry about the threat of a ban from FIFA. The Indian skipper said the matter is not in their control and those involved are doing their best to avoid the potential ban.

"I've spoken to the boys and my advice is to not give it too much attention to this because it is out of your control. People who are involved are doing their best to make sure that we are going to come out with the best results possible. "As far as players are concerned, we are going to make sure that we do our work properly. We have to make sure to better ourselves as players. Whenever you get an opportunity to represent your club or your country, put your best foot forward. All other verticals in the AIFF are trying to fix as much as possible to make sure that they come out with flying colours," added the Indian skipper.

The World Cup in Qatar will kick off a day earlier than scheduled, governing body FIFA said on Thursday after its ruling bureau agreed unanimously to hold the opening ceremony and the host nation's first match on Sunday, November 20. The original plan was for the opening ceremony to be held before Qatar's game on Nov. 21 against Ecuador, which would have created the unusual situation of two matches — Senegal v Netherlands and England v Iran — being held before the ceremony.

Normally, the ceremony is conducted before the kick-off of the first game of the tournament. Hosts Qatar will now make their World Cup debut against Ecuador at 1900 local time after an opening ceremony at the 60,000-capacity Al Bayt Stadium. The change is in line with the long-standing tradition of opening matches involving hosts or holders.

The Group A match between Senegal and Netherlands, originally scheduled to be the tournament opener, has been pushed back by six hours from 1300 local time on Nov. 21 to the 1900 slot vacated by Qatar v Ecuador. England's Group B match with Iran and the United States' opener against Wales, which are also scheduled for Nov. 21, remain unaffected by the change.

The plan has been signed off by a committee comprising of the heads of FIFA's six regional confederations and president Gianni Infantino. "The decision followed an assessment of the competition and operational implications, as well as a thorough consultation process and an agreement with key stakeholders and the host country," FIFA said.

The change stretches the World Cup to 29 days until the Dec. 18 final and comes after several rounds of ticket sales, with organisers having sold 1.8 million tickets so far. "Ticket holders will be duly notified by email that the relevant matches have been rescheduled and their tickets will remain valid irrespective of the new date/time," FIFA added.

"In addition, FIFA will seek to address any issues arising from this change in a case-by-case basis."

It will be the first World Cup staged in the Middle East and has been pushed back to later in the year than its typical June-July schedule to avoid the region's punishing summer heat.

FIFA moves Qatar World Cup start forward by a day, to kick off on November 20

Football fans worldwide may be in for a treat, considering how the biggest footballing event in the world is seemingly inching close faster than what fans were expecting. A report by Reuters suggests that FIFA has moved to prepone the highly anticipated World Cup by a day in addition to offering the host nation the tournament's first draw.

Should FIFA's ruling regarding the change in dates pass, fans will be able to enjoy the opening ceremony and Qatar's first game on Sunday, i.e. November 20th. In accordance with the new dates, the tournament will span from 20 November through to 18 December 2022. Per the previous schedule, the opening ceremony was set to take place before the Group A contest between Qatar and Ecuador on November 21st.

Qatar World Cup to kick off sooner than expected as FIFA allows hosts to play first - Report

Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter and France footballing legend Michel Platini were both cleared of corruption charges by a Swiss court on Friday. Blatter, who led FIFA for 17 years, was cleared of fraud by the Federal Criminal Court in the southern city of Bellinzona.

Platini, a former France national team captain and manager, was also acquitted of fraud. The two, once among the most powerful figures in global soccer, had denied the charges against them. On Friday they joked and shook hands before the judgment and looked relieved as the verdict was read out.
Platini described his joy after the acquittal, saying the allegations had turned him from a legend of world soccer to a "devil".

"I want to express my happiness for all my loved ones that justice has finally been done after seven years of lies and manipulation," Platini said in a statement. "The truth has come to light during this trial," he added. "I kept saying it: my fight is a fight against injustice. I won a first game."

Prosecutors had accused Blatter, a Swiss who led global soccer body FIFA for 17 years, and Platini of unlawfully arranging for FIFA to pay the Frenchman two million Swiss francs ($2.06 million) in 2011. The case meant Blatter ended his reign as FIFA president in disgrace and it wrecked Platini`s hopes of succeeding him after he was banned from football when the affair came to light.

Blatter, 86, had said the two-million franc payment followed a "gentlemen`s agreement" between the pair when he asked Platini to be his technical adviser in 1998. Platini, 67, worked as a consultant between 1998 and 2002 with an annual salary of 300,000 Swiss francs -- the most FIFA could afford because of money troubles the organisation had at the time, Blatter has told the court.

The rest of Platini`s one million per year salary was to be settled at a later date, Blatter said. The senior judge, Josephine Contu Albrizio, said a verbal agreement between Blatter and Platini seemed credible, as did the Frenchman`s seeing his market value at 1 million per year due to his status in the game.
It also seemed implausible that Platini would have worked only on the basis of written contract that paid him such a paltry sum, the judge told the court.

It was also credible that Platini sought the extra money only in 2010 as he did not need the money immediately. The payment emerged following a huge investigation launched by the U.S. Department of Justice into bribery, fraud and money-laundering at FIFA in 2015, which triggered Blatter`s resignation.
Both officials were banned in 2015 from soccer for eight years over the payment, although their bans were later reduced.

Platini, who also lost his job as UEFA president following the ban, said the affair was a deliberate attempt to thwart his attempt to become FIFA president in 2015. Platini`s former general secretary at UEFA, Gianni Infantino, entered the FIFA race and won the election in 2016.

FIFA has lifted the suspension of the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) which was imposed due to undue third-party interference, world soccer`s governing body said on Thursday. A group of officials led by Ashfaq Hussain Shah, which was elected by the Supreme Court in 2018 to run the PFF but was not recognised by FIFA, took over the headquarters in March last year.

They had seized control from FIFA`s normalisation committee headed by Haroon Malik, with Shah saying the committee had not conducted elections for the body in the 18 months since it took charge. FIFA suspended the PFF due to the "hostile takeover" but said it now had confirmation the committee had regained full control of the PFF`s premises and was in a position to manage its finances.

"The PFF was also informed that any undue interference in its affairs or action that could hinder the fulfilment of the mandate of the normalisation committee might lead to the PFF being suspended again and/or the imposition of other sanctions provided for in the FIFA Statutes," FIFA added in a statement. "As the deadline by which the normalisation committee was required to fulfil its mandate (30 June 2022) is now no longer realistic, the Bureau (of the FIFA Council) has also decided to extend the committee`s mandate until 30 June 2023 at the latest."

The stage is set for the forthcoming Qatar World Cup, which will kick off later this year in November-December. Ahead of the showpiece event, FIFA has announced, on Friday (July 01), that it will introduce a new technology to improve offside calls at this year's marquee event in Qatar.

Over the years, the decision-making on offside calls have often consumed a lot of match time. While the decision can well determine the fate of the match, officials tend to take time before making a final call. Thus, in order to cut down time on making a decision regarding offside rules, FIFA has gone ahead with a unique method where it will be resorting to a limb-tracking camera system.

WHAT IS IT? HOW DOES IT WORK?

FIFA revealed today that it is all set to launch semi-automated offside technology (SAOT), which will use several cameras to track players' movements plus a sensor in the ball and will quickly show 3D images on stadium screens at the tournament; to help spectators and viewers understand the referee's call.

For the unversed, it's the third successive World Cup that sees FIFA introduce new technology to help referees. In 2014, the Goal-line technology was ready for mega event in Brazil following a notorious refereeing fiasco in 2010. In the next edition, held in Russia in 2018, video review to help referees judge game-changing incidents came into effect. Talking about the new offside system, it promises to provide faster and more accurate decisions than are currently made with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system.

Each stadium in Qatar will have a dozen cameras beneath the roof, synchronized to track 29 data points on each player's body 50 times a second. Data is processed with artificial intelligence to create a 3D offside line that is notified to the VAR officials. In addition, a sensor in the match ball helps to track its speed, acceleration and provides a precise "kick point", i.e. when the decisive pass is played to align with the offside line data, explained the FIFA innovation director Johannes Holzmller during an online discussion.

The new high-tech was something which was always in FIFA's agenda, however, the push to get the new and unique system ready for the 2022 World Cup slowed down due to the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nonetheless, live in-game trials were conducted at the Arab Cup in Qatar, 2021 as well as during FIFA's Club World Cup, held early this year in the UAE.

At present, the new technology promises a lot. It remains to be seen how it helps officials and the answers will be known during the upcoming World Cup.

Swimmer Lia Thomas had created history and stood smiling on the podium as she won the gold medal in the 500-yard freestyle event at the US collegiate championships to extend her dominance in the sport. It was arguably one of the proudest moments of her swimming career but the trans athlete was far from basking in the glory of her victory as her historic triumph sparked immense backlash on social media.

Thomas had become the first-ever transgender athlete to win a top-tier title at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the US but her achievement was overshadowed by the raging debate about inclusiveness and fairness. Thomas is not the first transgender athlete to be dominating her sport in recent times.

Weightlifter Laurel Hubbard from New Zealand, who competed at the Tokyo Olympics, Thomas and British cyclist Emily Bridges are some trans athletes who have been great in their respective sports and have won medals across events. The question which arises is a simple yet sophisticated one - do they enjoy an unfair advantage competing in women's competitions?

Should transgender women be banned from competing in female categories? It has been regarded as one of the most sensitive issues in sports over the years and the emergence of the likes of Hubbard and Thomas has only added to the row. The debate remains centred around fairness and inclusion, whether it is right to let transgender athletes take part in women's competitions.

There is scientific evidence which proves even with a reduction in testosterone levels and hormonal therapy, Male-to-female transgender athletes retain physical advantages in their bodies which essentially makes it unfair for other women competing with them in their respective sports.

Boys undergo a massive transformation in regard to their bodies at the age of around 13-14 which results in changes in their heart, lung and the shape of the skeleton among others. They also witness a significant change in haemoglobin levels in their blood.

These factors are all imperative contributors when it comes to sporting performances and even after testosterone reduction from the body some biological differences are retained in trans athletes, who have transformed from male to female. But despite the scientific evidence, swimming's world governing body FINA's decision was met with criticism from many when it announced it will bar transgender athletes from taking part in elite women's competitions.

While announcing the decision, FINA President FINA President Husain Al-Musallam said it was a step that has not been taken before by any global sporting bodies and that he would like his organisation to lead the way. FINA also plans to launch an 'Open' category separately for trans athletes to ensure they can get a fair shot at competing in all elite events.

“The creation of an open category will mean that everybody has the opportunity to compete at an elite level. This has not been done before, so FINA will need to lead the way," the FINA president had said.

FINA's decision is a landmark one in the history of sports, forcing major sporting bodies to rethink their transgender policies. FIFA have already planned to review their existing framework for trans athletes while World Athletics - the global governing body for athletics also intends to rework its policies for transgenders.

There remain concerns over transgender athletes enjoying advantages in terms of their aerobic and anaerobic capacity, physicality, stamina and overall strength when pitted against other women in the female category. Thus, FINA's move to bar transgenders from female events and open up a separate category for them has been welcomed by many.

But it remains to be seen if the other global sporting bodies will follow their footsteps and make the difficult calls and tough decisions in ensuring the fine line between unfair advantage and inclusiveness is not damaged when it comes to gender identity in sports.

FIFA will allow countries to select up to 26 players for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, increasing the maximum squad size by three for the November 21-December 18 tournament.

"The number of players to be included on the final list has been increased to at least 23 and a maximum of 26," FIFA said in a statement.

World football's governing body said the decision to expand squads was made "given the need to retain additional flexibility due to the unique timing" of this year's competition, which will interrupt the European club season.

FIFA also took into account the "broader context of the disruptive effects caused by the Covid-19 pandemic on squads before and during tournaments".

UEFA adopted similar changes for Euro 2020 last year, meeting a demand from coaches who feared they could lose players due to coronavirus.

National teams had named squads of 23 players at the World Cup and European Championship ever since the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea.

Prior to that only 22 players were allowed in each squad at international tournaments.

Last week football's rules body IFAB approved the permanent use of five substitutes for all top-level matches and said teams can now name 15 substitutes on a team sheet instead of 12.

"No more than 26 people (up to 15 substitutes and 11 team officials – one of these officials must be the team doctor) will be allowed to sit on the team bench" during World Cup games, FIFA said Thursday.

Chhetri and co. created history, as it was India`s first-ever back-to-back qualification in the AFC Asian Cup, scheduled to be held in 2023. They are now placed just below New Zealand (103rd), who recently lost their World Cup qualification spot to Costa Rica.

Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser al-Khelaifi was acquitted in Switzerland on Friday for a second time in a retrial of alleged wrongdoing linked to former FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke. Al-Khelaifi was cleared again of a charge of incitement to commit aggravated criminal mismanagement for allowing Valcke to use a vacation home in Sardinia rent free.

The home was bought in 2013 by a Qatari company. Valcke, who was FIFA's top administrator for eight years until being removed in 2015, was convicted on separate charges not involving Al-Khelaifi. They relate to taking kickbacks in negotiations for World Cup broadcast rights in Italy and Greece.

The Swiss federal criminal court found Valcke guilty of repeated forgery and passive corruption. He was given a longer suspended sentence 11 months instead of three than he received after the original trial in September 2020. A third defendant, Greek marketing executive Dinos Deris, was convicted of active corruption and given a 10-month suspended sentence after first being acquitted in 2020. Both men's sentences were suspended for probationary periods of two years.

The retrial was held in March at the Swiss federal criminal court after prosecutors appealed against the original verdicts. Al-Khelafi's second acquittal was hailed by his legal team as total vindication. The years of baseless allegations, fictitious charges and constant smears have been proven to be completely and wholly unsubstantiated twice, lawyer Marc Bonnant said in a statement.

During a five-year investigation, Al-Khelafi, the head of Qatari broadcaster beIN Media Group and a member of the World Cup host nation's government, rose in power and status in European soccer. Despite being a suspect in Swiss criminal proceedings, Al-Khelafi was elected in 2019 to join the UEFA executive committee and now leads the influential European Club Association after PSG refused to join the failed Super League project last year.

The prosecution case against Al-Khelafi focused on beIN's renewal of World Cup rights in the Middle East and North Africa with FIFA around the time the Italian villa was bought. Lawyers for Al-Khelafi argued beIN's deal for the 2026 and 2030 World Cups, said in court to be worth $480 million in total, was good for FIFA.

While often using the vacation home from 2013 to 2015, Valcke also oversaw FIFA-led talks to move the 2022 World Cup in Qatar from June and July to the cooler months of November and December. FIFA was also awaiting, then dealing with the fallout from, its ethics committee's investigation into the 2018-2022 World Cup bidding contests. The charges proven against Valcke related to filing three payments totaling 1.25 million euros ($1.45 million) to his personal company's accounts as loans.

Valcke's convictions were announced in the same week that former FIFA president Sepp Blatter was on trial in the same Bellinzona courthouse in a separate case. Blatter and former UEFA president Michel Platini faced fraud, forgery and financial misconduct charges. Verdicts are due on July 8 in that case, which relates to a Blatter-approved FIFA payment of 2 million Swiss francs ($2 million) to Platini in 2011.
