Just two days before the start of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the organisers on Friday announced that the sale of beer will not be permitted inside the stadiums during the games, leaving a few other major sponsors worried. This step did put FIFA’s multi-million dollar contract with Budweiser, worth nearly $75mn, in limbo.

“Following discussions between host country authorities and FIFA, a decision has been made to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages on the FIFA Fan Festival, other fan destinations, and licensed venues, removing sales points of beer from Qatar’s World Cup 2022 stadium perimeters,” FIFA said in an abrupt statement earlier.

In his opening press conference for the World Cup in Qatar on Saturday, FIFA President Gianni Infantino emphasised support for the LGBTQ community and migrant workers. “Today I feel Qatari, today I feel Arab, today I feel African, today I feel gay, today I feel disabled, today I feel a migrant worker,” he said.

The owner of American beer giant Budweiser said Friday that restrictions at World Cup matches were "beyond our control," after FIFA and host nation Qatar announced sales at stadiums would not go ahead. AB InBev acknowledged the action taken merely days before the first match kickoff on Sunday, saying "some of the planned stadium activations cannot move forward due to circumstances beyond our control," a company spokesperson said in a statement to AFP.

As per several media outlets, this decision came following the intervention of the royal family in the matter just two days before the start of the showpiece event in Qatar. This situation has now put FIFA in a spot as they had already signed a deal, believed to be worth nearly $75 million, with the German brand Budweiser. The latter were supposed to sell their beers in the designated drinking zones inside the stadiums three hours prior to an encounter and an hour following it.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino will stand unopposed for a third term as head of world football's governing body next year, FIFA confirmed on Thursday. A brief statement from FIFA said that Infantino would be the only candidate when the election takes place at the 73rd FIFA Congress in Kigali, Rwanda on March 16. "No other candidature has been submitted," the statement said. Infantino's third term follows in the line of previous FIFA presidents -- Joao Havelange was in charge from 1974 to 1998 and Infantino's predecessor Sepp Blatter held office from 1998 to 2015.

Infantino was elected in 2016 promising to "restore FIFA's image" after the federation was plagued by scandal in the final years of Blatter's time in charge. The German Football Federation (DFB) said on Wednesday it would not support Infantino's re-election. DFB president Bernd Neuendorf said he had hoped Infantino would show "deeper consideration for human rights and more commitment to humanitarian issues". Neuendorf has been a strong supporter of calls from rights groups for FIFA to set up a compensation fund for migrant workers who build the World Cup stadiums.

Fury at FIFA chief's kickabout in Indonesia following stadium stampede

Indonesia will demolish and rebuild a football stadium where a stampede killed more than 130 people this month, President Joko Widodo said on Tuesday as he vowed to "thoroughly transform" the sport in the soccer-mad nation.

The president, popularly known as Jokowi, was speaking to reporters at the state palace after meeting Gianni Infantino, head of world soccer governing body FIFA.

"Kanjuruhan stadium in Malang...we will demolish it and rebuild according to FIFA standards," he said.

The deadly stampede after a league match in the city of Malang on Oct 1 has been blamed on police firing tear gas in the stadium, a crowd control measure banned by FIFA.

The president said he had agreed with Infantino on significant changes to how the sport was managed in Indonesia.

"We agreed to thoroughly transform Indonesian soccer," he said. "Every aspect of preparation...needs to be based on FIFA standards."

The meeting between Jokowi and Infantino comes after Indonesia and FIFA agreed to form a joint task-force in the wake of the stadium tragedy, and as the country prepares to host the Under-20 World Cup next year.

"Every aspect of preparation...needs to be based on FIFA standards." The meeting between Jokowi and Infantino comes after Indonesia and FIFA agreed to form a joint task-force in the wake of the stadium tragedy, and as the country prepares to host the Under-20 World Cup next year.
