French President Emmanuel Macron has described a shooting in a Paris suburb that killed one person and injured five others as a ‘racist terrorist attack’. Macron called the incident a turning point in the life of our Republic and our nation, describing it as the first random racial killing of its kind. The shooting took place over approximately 15 minutes, with the attacker reportedly firing from a car in Trappes, south-west of Paris, before continuing to nearby La Verrière. The gunman appeared to target people of migrant origin before being arrested. Three of the injured victims, including a 12-year-old girl, remain in serious condition. During a visit to the scene in Trappes, Macron said the victims had been targeted because of their skin colour or religion. He urged the public not to give an inch in the face of what he described as ideologies taking root. The motive behind the attack remains unclear. However, France's National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor's Office (PNAT) said the incident appeared to be murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise. French media have identified the suspect as Kevin T. According to PNAT, the 39-year-old had four previous convictions that had been automatically expunged. Local media reported that the suspect was known to police but not to France's intelligence services. The national anti-terrorism prosecutor's office told BFMTV that he was not on a list of individuals considered to pose a serious threat to French security. PNAT also confirmed that a member of the suspect's immediate family circle had been taken into custody on Friday. Also Read: US Navy, Marine Corps boards defy Trump's transgender military ban, vote to retain troops
Shooting spree across two towns
Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh said that an individual fired shots from his vehicle at several people he encountered on Friday morning. A police union official said the suspect was detained in La Verrière on the main N10 road that runs through the town. The attacker reportedly travelled along a main road, intermittently firing through his car window.
Twelve-year-old girl among the injured
The mother of the injured 12-year-old girl told French broadcaster RTL that her daughter had suffered eight gunshot wounds and required surgery. "How could anyone do this to a child?" she asked. The mother said her daughter had been wearing a headscarf at the time of the attack and questioned whether it had made her a target. "She's a child who was born in France, in Trappes. She has the right to live in France, to make her life in France," she added.
Anti-terror investigation underway
A local police chief told BFMTV that the suspect had used an older-style semi-automatic weapon capable of firing in bursts. Le Parisien reported that the weapon dated back to World War II. PNAT said its investigation also covers possession of a Category A weapon, a classification that includes military-grade weapons and firearms capable of firing in bursts. The anti-terrorism office added that investigators are examining possible conspiracy with a terrorist group for the purpose of preparing crimes against persons. In the last few weeks, Europe has been rocked by protests over deteriorating conditions in schools and the rising cost of living. However, the unrest took a deadly turn last weekend, with large-scale violence breaking out in France. Now, in neighbouring Italy, it has emerged that the mafia is seeking to infiltrate the protests. Truckers and farmers have been protesting over rising fuel and fertiliser costs, causing major disruption in southern Italy this week. While seeking to address their concerns, the Giorgia Meloni-led government has accused mafia syndicates of hijacking the protests to blackmail the state amid high-profile criminal trials. According to reports, drug lord Michele Senese has been directing criminals from his jail cell, resulting in 15 bombings in recent times. Now, France remains on the boil. To avert possible violence, it is deploying 70,000 security personnel to manage protests this weekend. Adding to tensions, an individual in a car opened fire with a military-grade weapon on five people at different locations in Paris. While one person died, four others, including a 12-year-old girl, were seriously injured. The gunman was subsequently taken into custody. The police are now investigating whether the shooting was a terrorist act or motivated by race or religion. Fearing fresh violence, shopkeepers in France are taking preventive measures. While some have cleared their stocks, others have installed wooden panels on their windows to protect their premises against theft. In last weekend's riots, 228 businesses in Paris were looted. He also declared that illegitimate protests would be banned in the coming days. Before the weekend protests, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu held meetings with leaders of different political parties, including France Unbowed. France is set to deploy nearly 70,000 cops across the nation ahead of new protests this weekend, as some of the worst urban violence erupted in the country this year on the sidelines of demonstrations a week ago, the government confirmed on Friday (October 23). Amid the development, President Emmanuel Macron is postponing his scheduled visit to Nigeria and Senegal, which was set for later this month. Meanwhile, he held a meeting of his defence council of top ministers and officials and was to meet security forces. The president will also host representatives of high school pupils for the first time, after protests over the conditions at their schools started, which later sparked the movement that turned into a nationwide violent protest against the government over the rising cost of living.
Sensitive timing for France
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez claimed at a press conference in Paris that some 70,000 security personnel will be deployed on Saturday. He warned that calls for violence and looting were circulating on social media. The timing of the unrest is especially sensitive for France, coming just six months before elections to choose Macron’s successor, with a fresh poll showing far-right leader Marine Le Pen as the frontrunner, her lead reportedly bolstered by the recent turmoil. Tensions are set to rise further this weekend as Le Pen hosts her National Rally (RN) party congress in Orleans, an event expected to draw thousands of supporters even as local authorities brace for possible clashes with opponents converging on the city. At the prime minister’s office’s request, Nunez was due to visit Orleans on Friday to review security preparations. At Macron's meeting with students, "we will present our demands to him which remain the same: the state of school infrastructure and an overhaul of the Parcoursup (university admissions) system," Nathanael Combary, president of Renouveau Lyceen (High School Renewal), told AFP. Macron’s government, meanwhile, has tried to distinguish between protesters’ legitimate grievances and the looting, arson and vandalism that broke out alongside demonstrations last Saturday.

French President Emmanuel Macron has criticised US President Donald Trump and other foreign leaders for making ‘stupid comments’ about France’s street unrest, accusing them of exploiting the violence for political gain as the country prepares for another wave of protests this weekend. Macron slams Trump and other foreign leaders' 'stupid comments' on France riots as fresh protests loom

US President Donald Trump on Monday once again blamed immigration for the protests and violence reported across France in recent days, urging European countries and French President Emmanuel Macron to tighten border controls. Speaking to reporters in Washington, Trump reiterated his criticism of France's immigration policies, arguing that immigration, rather than other domestic issues, was responsible for the unrest. "What's happening in France has to do with immigration, not schools, not anything," Trump told reporters in Washington, echoing his comments from the day before. "It's immigration, and I told President Emmanuel Macron, close up your borders."
Trump recounts conversation with macron on immigration
Trump also revisited an earlier conversation with Macron, claiming he had warned the French president about allowing large numbers of people to enter the country.
Immigration remains central to Trump's political agenda
Trump made combating illegal immigration a central pledge of his 2024 presidential campaign. His political messaging has frequently linked immigration to crime, public safety and national identity, at times relying on false claims that have drawn criticism for playing on racial fears. While Trump attributed the unrest in France to immigration, the supplied account does not establish immigration as the cause of the demonstrations. The protests were reported to have centred on rising prices, and the circumstances surrounding the violence require separate consideration.

Donald Trump blames immigration for protests and violence in France, urges Emmanuel Macron to tighten borders and warns Europe about its immigration policies

"It's immigration, and I told President Emmanuel Macron, close up your borders." Paris is literally burning, protesters are shutting down the streets, and this woman is casually jogging past a burning barricade like it’s a treadmill session. She is literally running through thick black smoke because hitting her daily step count is a higher priority than whatever revolution is happening around her.

Pure, unfiltered main character syndrome. The absolute disrespect to the entire riot.— Atulya (@DesiMemesTweets) October 18, 2026

‘She’s free to go for a jog’: Internet divided over woman’s decision
The video has drawn sharply divided reactions online, with users debating whether the woman's actions reflected indifference to the unrest or simply an attempt to continue with her everyday life. Some viewers questioned the decision to jog through an area where burning barricades and thick smoke could pose safety risks. Others argued that a short video offered little insight into the woman's circumstances, intentions or state of mind. One user suggested that the woman might simply have been exercising to manage stress or maintain a familiar routine, pointing out that outsiders could not know what she was thinking. Another social media user praised her for concentrating on herself rather than attempting to change the behaviour of others. A third user defended the jogger, arguing that she should not be expected to participate in the unrest or allow the actions of rioters to dictate her daily activities. According to this view, continuing with her routine could be one way of coping with an unpredictable and stressful situation.

French President Emmanuel Macron is raising eyebrows again: not for anything he said in one of his many public appearances, but for what he's been wearing to them. The French president has been sporting a striking pair of blue reflective aviator sunglasses, even indoors. A viral photo shows Donald Trump leaning into Brigitte Macron for a kiss on the cheek during his visit to the Palace of Versailles. The First Lady of France can be seen putting a hand in between, with a cringe expression on her face. The photo has generated quite a buzz, with Trump being mocked by netizens, and some also slamming him. The viral photo is an apparent dig at this incident. Another clue lies in Brigitte's dress. She wore a black dress with white detailing on the neck. However, the sleeves of her dress in the photo are white. So clearly, the photo is not real. However, it is generating buzz on social media.
The Palace of Versailles dinner and MoU
Macron's invitation to Trump for the dinner at Versailles is being described as a clever ploy to keep Trump in France for a longer time to avoid an abrupt departure from the international summit. Before the dinner, Trump expressed his love for all things ornate and grand. "I'm a fan of beautiful places... And Versailles is not a gold leaf. Versailles is the real deal," he told reporters.Using Versailles for the signing of the MoU also garnered flak from critics. The Palace of Versailles was the setting for the signing of the 1919 Treaty of Versailles, which many believe sowed the seeds for World War II. Critics used this parallel to argue that the new MoU merely delayed a larger inevitable conflict in the Middle East.

Brigitte Macron's infamous slap of her husband Emmanuel Macron before descending the plane's steps in Vietnam, went viral.
