French President Emmanuel Macron has said a truce between Ukraine and Russia could be agreed in the coming weeks. This comes after talks with Donald Trump at the White House on the third anniversary of Russia's invasion.

Macron suggests Ukraine truce could be weeks away

US President Donald Trump hosted French leader Emmanuel Macron at the White House on the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Both leaders discussed the 'progress' made between countries on peace talks concerning the Russia-Ukraine war.

The power dynamic between Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron was on full display on Monday (Feb 24) as the US and the French Presidents met in Washington. Trump appeared to be trying to humiliate Macron, as on multiple occasions, he supposedly on purpose put the visiting leader in an awkward position.
<h2>What happened?</h2>
Right off the bat, Trump sought to show Macron down as he sent a White House employee to greet the French President instead of welcoming him to the White House himself. Videos and photos of the moment show the French leader pulling up in a black car before being welcomed into the West Wing by Abigail Jones, the Acting White House Chief.

Conventionally, as part of diplomatic tradition, foreign dignitaries are welcomed into the White House by the President of the United States.
This was followed by another subtle indignity as the French head of state was forced to perch on the edge of the Oval Office desk while Trump himself sat in the middle during a Zoom conference call with G7 leaders.
<h2>A handshake for the books?</h2>
Also in the spotlight was their handshake, a symbolic moment that, this time, lasted ten seconds&mdash;far from the 29-second forceful grip Macron had previously used in 2017 to assert dominance during Trump&rsquo;s first term.&nbsp;

However, netizens were quick to spot that Macron emulated Trump&rsquo;s signature Yank handshake before the US president could. &ldquo;He went on the offence and yanked Donald Trump's tiny hand first,&rdquo; commented one user on X, posting a video of the two leaders.

At one point, Macron was seen touching Trump&rsquo;s elbow as he stopped and corrected the US President&rsquo;s claims that European aid to Ukraine was structured as a loan.
&ldquo;No, in fact, to be frank, we paid sixty per cent of the total effort, and it was loans, guarantees, grants, and we provided real money, to be clear. Watch | Trump 'humiliates' Macron: Snubs, tense handshakes and more from White House meet

French President Emmanuel Macron will convene a summit of European leaders in Paris on Monday (Feb 17) to discuss the continent&rsquo;s security, Foreign Minister Jean-No&euml;l Barrot confirmed.&nbsp;
The meeting comes as concerns grow over the United States' handling of the Ukraine war, particularly after President Donald Trump&rsquo;s direct engagement with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
Trump&rsquo;s phone call with Putin earlier this week caught Ukraine and its European allies off guard, raising fears that the US may negotiate a settlement without European involvement.

Barrot, speaking on France Inter radio, did not specify which countries would participate, but a European diplomatic source told AFP news agency that leaders from Britain, Germany, Poland, Italy, and Denmark, along with NATO Secretary-General Marc Rutte and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, are expected to attend. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is also set to be present.
<h2>Growing European anxiety over US actions</h2>
At the Munich Security Conference, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski welcomed Macron&rsquo;s initiative, saying European leaders needed to discuss the challenges posed by Trump.

The Paris meeting is expected to address multiple issues, including:
<ul>
<li>US attempts to sideline Europe in peace talks with Russia</li>
<li>Ukraine&rsquo;s potential NATO membership</li>
<li>How Ukraine can receive security guarantees</li>
</ul>
Macron&rsquo;s hurry to convene European leaders reflects growing concerns that the US is taking control of the negotiations while keeping European governments at a distance.

<h2>US Special Envoy&rsquo;s comments spark outrage</h2>
Tensions escalated further after Trump&rsquo;s special envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, suggested that European leaders were not essential to the peace talks.
"It may be like chalk on a blackboard, it may grate a little bit, but I&rsquo;m being honest," Kellogg said at the Munich Security Conference. He urged European leaders to focus on increasing defence spending instead of complaining about being left out of discussions.
Kellogg also hinted at a rapid timeline for an agreement, saying he was working on "Trump time" and expected a deal "in weeks and months."

<h2>Zelenskyy warns US against exclusion</h2>
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy used his speech at the Munich conference to call on Europe to take a stronger role in its defence.
"We cannot rule out that America might say no to Europe on issues that threaten it. Many leaders have talked about a European army&mdash;now is the time," Zelenskyy said.
He insisted that Ukraine must be part of any negotiation and urged Europe to ensure decisions about the continent&rsquo;s security are not made without its involvement. "No decisions about Ukraine without Ukraine. No decisions about Europe without Europe," he added.

Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa is going to have a separate room as the Louvre Museum in Paris has created a new exhibition space for the painting. Standing in front of the painting, Macron said that the museum would create a new entrance in its easternmost facade, which will be open by 2031. This is to reduce the crowd at the museum, which gets around nine million visitors every year. The renovation, as per Macron, is also to inspire a new generation of artists with a &ldquo;passion for France and Europe&rdquo;.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said on Sunday that French President Emmanuel Macron will allow Israeli companies to attend this year's Paris air show, after a call Sunday between the two leaders.
"The French president assured the prime minister that Israeli companies would be able to participate in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/paris-air-show" rel="dofollow">Paris Air Show</a>," Netanyahu's office said in a statement.
Macron's office said the French leader told Netanyahu that the presence of Israeli companies "could be examined favourably as a result of the ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon".

The Paris show, which takes place during odd-numbered years at the French capital's Le Bourget airport, is one of the world's most important aerospace events for both civil and military companies. This year's event is in mid-June.

French President Macron tells Netanyahu Israeli firms allowed at Paris Air Show

The leaders of France and Germany agree that both countries must act for a "strong" Europe, President Emmanuel Macron said after meeting Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Paris.
At a joint news briefing with Macron at the Elysee Palace two days after US President Donald Trump took office, Scholz said the new US leader "will be, and so much is already clear, a challenge".
He added: "Europe will not cower and hide, but instead be a constructive and assertive partner."
This stance, Scholz said, will be "the basis for good cooperation with the new American president".
Europe and the US are linked by "a long history of friendship and partnership" which he called "a stable foundation" for future relations, he added.
Trump had already announced a number of policy measures "which we will, of course, analyse in detail together with our European partners", Scholz said.
The meeting between both leaders came on the 62nd anniversary of the Elysee Treaty, a framework for French-German bilateral relations after World War II.
"Our couple is solid," said Macron.
Macron and Scholz underlined the role of their countries' close cooperation for European unity.
"Europe must be strong and resilient in a world that is, to put it mildly, in motion," said Scholz, who next month faces a general election at home.
"The only possible response for Europeans to the period that we are entering is more unity, more ambition, more audacity, and more independence," Macron said. "This is our momentum, and this is the direction in which we are going."
Macron said Europe needed not only to spend more for its own defence, "but must also develop its own industrial base, its own capacities, its own industry".

Macron and Scholz emphasise on strong, unified Europe amid challenges from new US leadership

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Wednesday (Jan 8) that the billionaire owner of social media platform X, Elon Musk "openly attacks our institutions" and "stirs up hatred". The statement came during a speech for the start of official commemorations on the 50th anniversary of dictator Francisco Franco's death.
This came after France called on the European Commission to take a strong stance and safeguard its member states with "the greatest firmness" against interference in political debates, specifically from Musk.
"Either the European Commission applies with the greatest firmness the laws that we have given ourselves to protect our public space, or it does not do so and then it will have to agree to give back the capacity to do so to the EU member states," Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot told France Inter radio.
This came after several European leaders expressed growing frustration against the tech mogul. The leaders included French President Emmanuel Macron, who said that Musk was "directly intervening in elections".
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also condemned the Tesla CEO for backing an extreme-right party.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store expressed concerns saying that it was "worrying" that someone wealthy and influential was involving themselves in European politics.

<h2>Meloni defends Musk</h2>
While most European leaders were lashing out at Musk, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has come out in support of the billionaire.
Calling him a "genius", Meloni said that Musk is a "gifted man" and that he has been unfairly portrayed as a &ldquo;monster&rdquo; due to his ties with US President-elect Donald Trump.
&ldquo;Elon Musk is a gifted man and it is always very interesting to meet him,&rdquo; Meloni told Corriere Della Sera. &ldquo;He is a great figure of our times, an extraordinary innovator who has always had his gaze fixed on the future."
&ldquo;It makes me laugh a bit that there are people who used to praise him as a genius but today depict him as a monster, just because he has chosen the &lsquo;wrong' political camp, as they see it,&rdquo; she remarked.

France: Macron Announces Fourth Government of the Year

Paris, France
<meta content="uuidjop0L6AsEeLy" name="uuid"/>
France's President Emmanuel Macron faced accusations of racism Friday over an alleged comment on problems in hospitals, which his office strongly denied he made, adding to the controversy over an angry remark during a visit to an Indian Ocean territory ravaged by a cyclone.
With Le Monde daily printing a sequence of articles about the behind-the-scenes atmosphere at the Elysee, Macron was also accused of sexist remarks about women opposition leaders and a homophobic quip about a former prime minister he appointed himself.
Macron said that the "problem with emergency care in this country is that it's filled with people called Mamadou", during a discussion last year in front of his then-health minister Aurelien Rousseau, according to an article in Le Monde on Wednesday.
Mamadou is a name popular among men originating from Muslim ethnic groups in West Africa.
"The Elysee strongly denies these reported remarks, which were not subjected to any verification by the presidency before publication," an official in the presidency said.

One of the senior Le Monde reporters behind the story, Ivanne Trippenbach, wrote on X: "Le Monde stands by all of its information."
Before the denial was issued, several left-wing politicians had strongly condemned the reported comments.
"These racist remarks by the president... are an insult to the Republic. It is an absolute disgrace," said Manuel Bompard, coordinator of the France Unbowed party (LFI) on X, echoing the indignation of many in his hard-left movement.
"I can't wait for him (Macron) to go."
The alleged remarks "are damning", added the Communist senator for Paris, Ian Brossat.

Le Monde also alleged, in a subsequent piece on Thursday, that Macron had dubbed the prime minister's office under former premier Gabriel Attal -- who is openly gay -- "La cage aux folles", a reference to a popular French farce featuring two gay men.
It also claimed he called Greens leader Marine Tondelier and Lucie Castets, who the left wanted to nominate as premier, "cocotte", a derogatory term for women.
"Yesterday we learned of extremely shocking homophobic remarks made by the president about Gabriel Attal," Tondelier said on X. "Today, they are sexist remarks. We are impatiently waiting for tomorrow."
<h2>'Damaging his image' </h2>
Macron was also facing controversy over a comment he made Thursday while on a visit to the French Indian Ocean archipelago of Mayotte, which was devastated by Cyclone Chido last weekend.
"If this was not (part of) France you would be 10,000 times deeper in the shit," he told a crowd of people, many of whom had heckled him over France's response to the disaster.
Greens MP Sandrine Rousseau accused Macron of going to Mayotte with "an arrogant attitude and giving lessons".
"A president cannot say that. In which other French territory would the president lecture our fellow citizens by asking them to 'please stop complaining about their tragedy since they are already lucky enough to be French'?," said Socialist leader Olivier Faure on X.
Macron at the start of his presidency was notorious for his outspoken quips, once telling a young jobseeker he could find a job "just by crossing the street".
For Philippe Moreau Chevrolet, professor of communication at Sciences Po, Macron still relishes employing "the little phrase that dominates an exchange, even if it means further damaging his already authoritarian image".
But concerning Mayotte, "it was disastrous" because "it blurred the message of empathy and reconstruction" that was the theme of the rest of the visit, he told AFP.
The controversies come at a sensitive time for Macron, with France in political crisis following Macron's gamble to call snap legislative elections this summer.
Macron has just appointed Francois Bayrou as his fourth prime minister of 2024.
"Everything goes there (at the Elysee) -- racism, homophobia, sexism. All locked away inside a gilded palace, far from the gaze of the French, who he lectures all day long," added left-wing MP Francois Ruffin.

"I can't wait for him (Macron) to go." The alleged remarks "are damning", added the Communist senator for Paris, Ian Brossat. Also read | Explained: US lawmakers scramble to avert govt shutdown. Here's what's at stake Le Monde also alleged, in a subsequent piece on Thursday, that Macron had dubbed the prime minister's office under former premier Gabriel Attal -- who is openly gay -- "La cage aux folles", a reference to a popular French farce featuring two gay men. We are impatiently waiting for tomorrow." 'Damaging his image' Macron was also facing controversy over a comment he made Thursday while on a visit to the French Indian Ocean archipelago of Mayotte, which was devastated by Cyclone Chido last weekend.
