<p>Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) surprised commuters who were taking a busy tram ride. A video going viral online shows Al Maktoum waiting at the station for the tram before boarding it along with fellow passengers. The clip was first posted on TikTok and was later reposted by Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on Instagram. A Dubai resident shot the video, showing the Dubai Sheikh getting on the tram and travelling without making any fuss about his presence. He was supposedly heading home from work. Another video shows him casually standing in the corner near the door with other commuters. Sheikh Mohammed's tram ride was part of his efforts to monitor the development and operations of public transport in Dubai.</p><h2><strong>The Dubai tram</strong></h2><p>Sheikh Mohammed has often been seen on public transport systems, enjoying the sky-high buildings and picturesque views of Dubai. In 2023, he got on the gold cabin of a Dubai Metro train, along with his entourage, near the Dubai Mall station. The Dubai Tram started in 2014 and has ferried more than 60 million passengers since then. It travels from Al Sufouh Station to Jumeirah Lakes Towers Station in 42 minutes. The tram covers 11 stations along Al Sufouh Road, connecting areas like the Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Knowledge Village, Dubai Media City, Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR), and Dubai Marina.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Sheikh Mohammed is the current ruler of Dubai and also serves as the vice president of UAE. He succeeded his brother Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum in all three roles after his death in 2006. He received military training after completing his studies, returning to Dubai at the age of 20. His father, Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, appointed him as the head of the Dubai Police Force and the Dubai Defence Force. He has also trained as a pilot in Italy.<br>&nbsp;</p>

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum was seen taking the tram in Dubai recently. Two videos showing him waiting at the station and then on the train with other passengers are circulating online. He stood at the door with other passengers.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) surprised commuters who were taking a busy tram ride. Sheikh Mohammed's tram ride was part of his efforts to monitor the development and operations of public transport in Dubai. The Dubai tram Sheikh Mohammed has often been seen on public transport systems, enjoying the sky-high buildings and picturesque views of Dubai. The tram covers 11 stations along Al Sufouh Road, connecting areas like the Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Knowledge Village, Dubai Media City, Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR), and Dubai Marina. Sheikh Mohammed is the current ruler of Dubai and also serves as the vice president of UAE. He has also trained as a pilot in Italy.

UAE faces economic headwinds as regional conflict dampens business confidence, dragging Dubai non-oil PMI to its weakest level since 2020, S&P Global data shows.

Business conditions in the United Arab Emirates faced fresh pressure in June as the Israel–Iran conflict rattled regional demand, denting sales and testing Dubai’s reputation as the Gulf’s commercial safe-haven. According to S&P Global data cited by Bloomberg, the UAE’s non-oil private sector showed only modest growth last month, with companies reporting a slowdown in orders amid heightened geopolitical tensions. UAE PMI points to slowdown The UAE’s headline Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI), a key measure of private-sector health outside the oil industry, inched up to 53.5 in June from 53.3 in May, S&P Global said. While still in expansion territory (above 50), the muted increase reflected caution among households and businesses. “The UAE non-oil sector showed signs of a minor setback in June due to the conflict between Israel and Iran,” said David Owen, senior economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, as quoted by Bloomberg. “The impact was primarily felt on the demand side, as some businesses reported a slowdown in orders driven by heightened tensions.” Dubai’s economy feels the strain The data showed a sharper impact in Dubai, the UAE’s commercial and financial hub, often seen as the Middle East’s safe port in a storm. Dubai’s non-oil PMI dropped to 51.8 in June from 52.9 in May, marking the lowest reading in nearly four years, S&P Global reported. The decline was driven by what the firm described as “a marked slowdown in sales growth,” underscoring the vulnerability of the emirate’s economy to regional uncertainty. Several companies cited in the S&P Global survey pointed to increased competition and weaker tourism linked to the heightened tensions, both of which weighed on new business. A test for the UAE’s “open for business” strategy As Bloomberg notes, the Israel–Iran conflict has posed a sharp test for the UAE’s long-standing strategy of maintaining political stability and an open, business-friendly environment in an often turbulent region. While the UAE has largely stayed insulated from direct military fallout, the conflict has fuelled worries over shipping risks, insurance costs, regional tourism flows and investor sentiment. Dubai’s model as a neutral, globally connected hub relies on steady demand and confidence from tourists, investors and multinational firms. The PMI data suggests that even without direct attacks, the conflict’s ripple effects can slow spending and investment. Outlook remains cautiously positive Despite the setback, economists see potential for recovery if regional tensions subside. “With consumer price pressures appearing limited, the latest data suggests that a rebound in sales growth is wholly possible in the coming months should regional tensions ease,” Owen told Bloomberg. The UAE has weathered previous regional crises, relying on its diversified economy, modern infrastructure and pro-business policies to maintain investor confidence. Analysts say these fundamentals remain intact, giving the country scope for a rebound later this year. Balancing growth and stability The latest PMI figures highlight the delicate balance the UAE must maintain as it promotes itself as a haven for global business while navigating a volatile neighbourhood. As S&P Global’s report makes clear, even indirect consequences of geopolitical crises can undermine consumer demand and business confidence, underscoring the need for diplomacy and stability to sustain growth. While the Israel–Iran conflict continues to cast a shadow over Dubai’s economy, many observers remain confident in its resilience, provided the region can avoid a wider escalation in the months ahead.

Ganguly’s befitting reply to England broadcasters over India enjoying ‘one venue’ advantage

<p>Pakistan is <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">Champions Trophy 2025</a> host, but Dubai, the alternative venue chosen for all India matches, including the knockouts, has somehow become the focal point. After several players and broadcasters pointed this out, saying <a href="https://www.wionews.com/cricket/playing-in-dubai-definitely-an-advantage-for-india-in-champions-trophy-rassie-van-der-dussen-8763938" rel="dofollow">it benefits India</a>, as unlike the remaining seven teams, they have to stay in the same hotel and train and play at the same venue throughout, former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq launched a scathing attack, urging every board to boycott the IPL in its protest.</p>
<p>Owing to tense cross-border relations between the arch-rivals, the Indian government refused to send its team to Pakistan for the eight-team tournament, persuading the apex body to convince the PCB to accept the hybrid model. The PCB declined to accept the hybrid model initially. but later agreed to it, putting some conditions in place in return, which the Indian board accepted.</p>

<p>After that, the PCB and the ICC picked Dubai as the alternative option for all India games. During the tournament, India won their two contested matches&mdash;against Bangladesh and Pakistan&mdash;qualifying for the semis. <p>Speaking on a local channel, Inzamam said India and BCCI cannot decide which teams play when and where, adding the other boards must step up and speak up against it, urging all of them, including their top cricketers, to boycott the cash-rich Indian Premier League. Inzamam also reminded other boards of how the BCCI prioritises its players and cricket by not allowing them to play in other franchise leagues worldwide.&nbsp;</p>
<p>"Keep aside the Champions Trophy. Top players participate in the IPL, but Indian players don't participate in other leagues. Other boards should stop sending their players to IPL. If you (BCCI) don't release your players for leagues, then other boards should take a stance," Inzamam said while speaking on a Pakistani TV channel, as quoted by Hindustan Times.</p>
<h2>Pakistan out of Champions Trophy</h2>
<p>Hosting an ICC event after 29 years, Pakistan failed to advance to the semis. After losing to New Zealand in the tournament&rsquo;s curtain raiser in Karachi, Pakistan lost their next match to India in Dubai, virtually getting knocked out of the competition.&nbsp;</p>
<p>However, mathematically, they were still in the competition unless their last league game against Bangladesh got washed out, leaving them winless. With that, Pakistan became the second host nation after Kenya (2000) to not win a single game in an edition.</p>

After several players and broadcasters pointed this out, saying it benefits India, as unlike the remaining seven teams, they have to stay in the same hotel and train and play at the same venue throughout, former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq launched a scathing attack, urging every board to boycott the IPL in its protest. Owing to tense cross-border relations between the arch-rivals, the Indian government refused to send its team to Pakistan for the eight-team tournament, persuading the apex body to convince the PCB to accept the hybrid model. The PCB declined to accept the hybrid model initially. but later agreed to it, putting some conditions in place in return, which the Indian board accepted. During the tournament, India won their two contested matches—against Bangladesh and Pakistan—qualifying for the semis. Even in the last four, India will face its opponent in Dubai on Tuesday (Mar 4), while New Zealand’s semis clash is scheduled for Wednesday (Mar 5) in Lahore. Inzamam also reminded other boards of how the BCCI prioritises its players and cricket by not allowing them to play in other franchise leagues worldwide. "Keep aside the Champions Trophy. Top players participate in the IPL, but Indian players don't participate in other leagues. Other boards should stop sending their players to IPL. If you (BCCI) don't release your players for leagues, then other boards should take a stance," Inzamam said while speaking on a Pakistani TV channel, as quoted by Hindustan Times. Pakistan out of Champions Trophy Hosting an ICC event after 29 years, Pakistan failed to advance to the semis. After losing to New Zealand in the tournament’s curtain raiser in Karachi, Pakistan lost their next match to India in Dubai, virtually getting knocked out of the competition. However, mathematically, they were still in the competition unless their last league game against Bangladesh got washed out, leaving them winless. With that, Pakistan became the second host nation after Kenya (2000) to not win a single game in an edition. (With inputs from agencies)

<p>"I don't think you have to be a rocket scientist to know that. The onus would be on them to use that advantage. <p>"Probably, logistically it will be easier to play in Lahore. You don't have to go through an international flight and go to Dubai and literally go to another country to play.
