When I landed in Dubai, I knew I had limited time and lots to do. A five-day trip would not be enough. I checked into Ibis World Trade Center Dubai which is in the heart of DIFC. I wanted to go and explore every part of Dubai.

Since I am a vegan I chose to dine at – Planet Terra, which had plenty of options for me. The interiors were chic and boho. I loved their muffins. Desert safari was at the top of my bucket list and I paired it up with an ATV ride. I could see the Oman border from the sand dunes during sunset. This was followed by a visit to Camp Nomad where I saw a traditional dragon dance. The dragon dance involved spitting fire in the air and I was awed at this tradition. I was not expecting much from the live shows in Dubai but camp nomad was lit.

Back at the hotel, I enjoyed live music which was specially curated to empower local artists. I enjoyed the remix of American, Indian, Armenian and Spanish music. Bollywood music is a big part of the culture in Dubai since 40 per cent of the residents of Dubai are Indian. I loved observing how I could speak with every other person I met in Hindi.

I knew Dubai had a great immersive dining scene and I couldn’t wait to try. I ended up at Seven Paintings to try the infamous immersive dining menu inspired by seven famous paintings across the world. My first course was actually locked in a treasure box and I had to open it with a key. My second was inspired by Banksy and another was inspired by Picasso. It was a meal like I have never had before.

I also visited Dubai Frame – a spot from where I could see all of Dubai. Burj Khalifa rose in the distance allowing spectacular views. I truly fell in love with Dubai there. The views from the frame made me feel like I had stepped into the future. Truly stunning and mesmerising. It was this view which made me feel like I needed to work harder in life and own a house in Dubai.

Al Seef is one of the most popular promenades of Dubai. From here, we took a short boat ride and ended up in the gold souk. Designs like we had never seen before and stunning leopard-inspired jewellery caught my imagination. I could not imagine enjoying an afternoon anywhere else. At Al Seef, I also came across traditional antique shops which were selling lanterns and sculptures. However, I had no luggage space as a budget traveller.

The cars in Dubai are spectacular. While driving around the Jumeirah region, I saw massive cars and plastic surgery clinics. The Jumeirah beach also had much to offer. Famished, I reached Slay Bar and Kitchen in DIFC where I tried tacos, pizzas and salad bowls alike. Slay is one of the places serving the best fusion food out there.

The best part was coming back to my room after a long day. The room had stunning views of buildings around and was a short drive away from Dubai Mall.

Dubai Mall had everything I could possibly imagine and stunning views of Burj Khalifa. I had underestimated how Burj Khalifa could make someone feel. It motivated me and made me realise there’s so much more to life and grander ways to live. Just imagine the view from the top of that building!

At Dubai Mall, I also visited the immersive exhibition ARTE which has around 10 different rooms dedicated to seasons, flowers, paintings, emotions and other creative energies. I enjoyed a matcha latte in their immersive cafe and was stunned to see how flowers automatically got created around the cup. ARTE made me realise I need to surround myself with art to be happier.

After shopping, I dined at Twine – a multi cuisine breakfast and lunch spot. However, I did not expect much from the food – it was exactly as per my Indian palate. The theme of the restaurant was modern with a hint of boho. I realised boho is perhaps one of the leading themes in designs for restaurants in Dubai.

My Dubai trip would have been incomplete without visiting the Vishal Mishra concert at the Coca-Cola Arena. This too was quite close to my hotel. I had never heard of Vishal Mishra before and I was surprised to attend the concert and realise I knew all his songs.

Sadly, my Dubai trip was about to end. However, it felt luxurious and had been rejuvenating. I was glad to have made it to the centre of the world. Dubai made me realize that whatever it is I wanted, I had to go get it.

Visit to Dubai: A sojourn worth considering

According to knight Frank, property values in Dubai are expected to continue their relentless comeback following the pandemic, in addition to the 20 per cent surge in 2024. The real estate firm predicted that home prices will increase by 8 per cent market-wide and 5 per cent on average for high-end houses in the coming year.

Many homeowners have become accidental millionaires due to the price surge in the emirates. Knight frank's survey projected that out of the 530,000 properties sold in Dubai since 2002, at least 95,000 are currently valued at more than $1 million.

That is, one in five houses in Dubai is above the million-dollar mark. Faisal Durrani, head of West Asia research at Knight Frank, said, "These days a million-dollar home is really the average price of a single-family home, which highlights how much values have increased in the past four and half years."

The government's response to the pandemic and its relaxed immigration rules enticed a large number of international purchasers, driving up demand for real estate in Dubai. An inflow of rich investors has boosted the Emirate's luxury real estate market, which includes waterfront homes on the city's man-made palm-shaped islands.

Some of the investors include billionaires from Russia, crypto winners, and wealthy Indians and Asians looking for second homes. Dubai has seen significant boom and bust cycles in the past.

However, according to Durrani, the majority of buyers now are end users, and regulations have increased down payments. So, he believes this time there are fewer risks to the boom. Durrani said, "The drivers are very different in this cycle, and we don’t see speculative activity." He added, "There is nothing in the data to suggest we are approaching a cliff-edge moment."

A Redditor took to social media to share his confusion after he received a total of eight fines while driving on a highway from Dubai to Abu Dhabi and then back home.

The user said that he was fined for "slow driving" and was not aware of the rules. He added that he got the first notifications late, and if he had received them earlier, he would have been able to avoid subsequent fines.

However, the netizens did not show any sympathy for the man and said that his lack of awareness could prove to be a "hazard" to road safety.

"I travelled to Abu Dhabi from Dubai yesterday. I was driving at 110-115 km/h in the second lane (next to the fast lane). When I reached home at night, I got a message about a total of 8 fines for both my drive towards Dubai and towards Abu Dhabi," wrote the Reddit user (snazzy_champ).

"I was not aware of this rule, and there was no flash from the camera. I had no idea about the fine for slightly slow driving, and it wasn't mentioned on any signs. I travelled to Abu Dhabi in the morning and returned at night," he added.

The user called the incident "totally unfair" and said that "There was no notification until I reached home. Had there been any notification for the morning drive, I would have been more careful on my way back to Dubai. I know it's my mistake, but fining without any notification or news article is totally unfair."

In the post, the Redditor shared a screenshot of the message he received along with the fines.

"If OP drove slightly slower, there are 3rd and 4th lanes for that," commented a user.

"The minimum speed is 120 km/h in that lane, and when the rule was announced, it was covered in the news and official socials. What's truly unfair is people thinking they can drive as slowly as they want just because they are in the second lane while being a hazard to others on the road," said a user.

Roasted by summer temperatures too hot for the beach, Dubai has found an innovative solution. They are opening the beaches at night, complete with floodlights and lifeguards carrying night-vision binoculars.

Gravitas: Dubai's Floodlit Beaches Packed at Night as Heat Soars

During the scorching hot weather, Dubai has come up with a way to enjoy beaches during the summer. The city has opened its beaches during the nighttime with floodlights and lifeguards with night vision binoculars.

As one of the world’s hottest regions, the temperatures in the city rise too high for the beaches during the day amid climate change. According to an official, the idea has gained popularity since last year, with over a million people visiting the beach at night.

Every year, the metropolitan city of about 3.7 million people witnesses temperatures as high as 40 degrees Celsius with high humidity during the summer season from June to October. This prevents the locals from having outdoor activities during the day.

Locals enjoy the night beach

While the neighbouring region is gripped by the Israel-Hamas conflict, the Dubai locals enjoy nighttime beaches, especially on weekends.

"The temperature drops down in the evening after the sun sets. So, yeah, it's amazing," said Mohammed, 32, from Pakistan, who brought his children to enjoy the night sea without worrying about the burning sun.

"While you're... bathing inside the water, you can see the sand even on your foot and your hands and everything," said Mohammed, who has lived in Dubai for a decade.

The city has over 800 metres of designated beaches that are illuminated with large, bright floodlights, AFP reported. Shark nets have also been installed. The lifeguards, who are positioned 24 hours a day, also use night vision binoculars to keep a watch on the swimmers or kayakers. The authorities are also testing a camera system powered by artificial intelligence that would detect if someone is in distress.

While the locals visit the beach at night to enjoy and relax after work, authorities are using this as an opportunity to promote tourism in the city during summer.

"I believe we are one of the only cities in the world to have such infrastructure on public beaches at night," said Hamad Shaker, an official from the Dubai municipality.

Tourism amid extreme weather

Expats in Dubai used to vacate the city during summer to escape the heat, said Manuela Gutberlet, a tourism researcher at the University of Breda in the Netherlands. However, recent years have seen Dubai become "a year-round urban destination" with over 17 million visitors last year. The city has become a desired location for tourists due to attractions like the world’s tallest building, indoor amusement parks, and massive shopping malls.

However, climate change may harm tourism with extreme weather conditions such as torrential rains during April that disrupted life for several days.

Gutberlet highlighted the need to "adapt quickly to new risks" as such weather events can increase the temperature levels and put off some visitors.

Meanwhile, Frenchman Laziz Ahmed, 77, went to the night beach during his first holiday in the city while visiting relatives.

"During the day, I don't go out much," he said, adding that in the evening "I make up for it".

The time has come for India to take centre stage in the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 in UAE. As India readies to open their campaign against New Zealand in their tournament opener on Friday (October 6) in the second game of the doubleheader in Dubai, we look at the match preview and result prediction of the marquee T20 WC clash.

Match Preview

The Indian women’s cricket team has come close to realizing their dream of lifting the T20 World Cup earlier but failed in their efforts. To ignite the willingness to chase history, the already upbeat Indian squad needs to begin the tournament on a high, and what better than beating New Zealand in their opener?

Though they will have their challenges lined up, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side will depend on their batting and bowling openers, respectively, to get the job done, or at least half of it, by beginning well.

Outside of the clear picks in the players to watch out for in star openers, Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Varma, Jemimah Rodrigues will hog all the limelight. Considering the star-studded batting line-up that would include keeper-batter Richa Gosh, India has a stronger chance of pacing innings anytime in the game.

Much like their batting attack, the Indian women’s team bowling line-up is as lethal. With seasoned campaigners Deepti Sharma and Renuka Singh alongside star bowler Radha Yadav, India can challenge any batting side in this tournament.

Though New Zealand’s past five results have all resulted in losses, while India has won four of the past five contested matches, the White Ferns still cannot be discounted for what they bring to the table. In the likes of Sophie Devine (c), Suzie Bates, Amelia Kerr, and Fran Jonas, the New Zealand women's team has some top players lined up in the XI.

Result Prediction –

The Indian women’s team will enter the contest as hot favourites.

Predicted Playing XIs –

India Women - Shafali Verma, Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, Harmanpreet Kaur(c), Richa Ghosh(wk), Shreyanka Patil, Deepti Sharma, Pooja Vastrakar, Asha Sobhana, Radha Yadav and Renuka Singh

New Zealand Women - Suzie Bates, Amelia Kerr, Sophie Devine(c), Brooke Halliday, Maddy Green, Isabella Gaze(wk), Fran Jonas, Leigh Kasperek, Jess Kerr, Molly Penfold and Rosemary Mair
