Police in Spain recently seized a homemade narco-submarine which was capable of carrying at least two tonnes of cargo. The nine-metre (30 foot) vessel was found by police last month while it was under construction in Malaga, a city in southern Spain.

The police stumbled on the boat while pursuing an international drug operation involving five countries and Europol, the EU crime agency. The Guardian reported that the craft, which is semisubmersible was made of fibreglass and plywood panels, which were attached to a frame.

Additionally, it had two 200-horsepower engines and was painted light blue. The head of Spanish police, Rafael Perez told reporters that the vessel had never sailed.

Spain: Police seize semi-submarine capable of carrying tonnes of drugs

Researchers have developed a method based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) that rapidly identifies currently available medications that may treat Alzheimer's disease.

The method could represent a rapid and inexpensive way to repurpose existing therapies into new treatments for this progressive, debilitating neurodegenerative condition. Importantly, it could also help reveal new, unexplored targets for therapy by pointing to mechanisms of drug action.

"Repurposing FDA-approved drugs for Alzheimer's disease is an attractive idea that can help accelerate the arrival of effective treatment -- but unfortunately, even for previously approved drugs, clinical trials require substantial resources, making it impossible to evaluate every drug in patients with Alzheimer's disease," said researcher Artem Sokolov from Harvard Medical School.

"We therefore built a framework for prioritising drugs, helping clinical studies to focus on the most promising ones," Sokolov added.

For the study, published in Nature Communications, the team described their framework, called Drug Repurposing in Alzheimer's Disease (DRIAD), which relies on machine learning -- a branch of artificial intelligence in which systems are 'trained' on vast amounts of data, 'learn' to identify telltale patterns and augment researchers' and clinicians' decision-making.

DRIAD works by measuring what happens to human brain neural cells when treated with a drug.

The method then determines whether the changes induced by a drug correlate with molecular markers of disease severity.

The approach also allowed the researchers to identify drugs that had protective as well as damaging effects on brain cells.

The team applied the screening method to 80 FDA-approved and clinically tested drugs for a wide range of conditions. The analysis yielded a ranked list of candidates, with several anti-inflammatory drugs used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and blood cancers emerging as top contenders.

These drugs belong to a class of medications known as Janus kinase inhibitors. The drugs work by blocking the action of inflammation-fueling Janus kinase proteins, suspected to play a role in Alzheimer's disease and known for their role in autoimmune conditions. The team's analyses also pointed to other potential treatment targets for further investigation.

Artificial Intelligence reveals current drugs may help combat Alzheimer's

Norway's government on Friday proposed a bill aimed at decriminalising the possession and use of small amounts of narcotics, saying users should be offered treatment rather than face jail.

"Decades of repression have taught us that punishment doesn't work. On the contrary, punishment can make things worse," Education Minister Guri Melby told a press conference.

"Drug addicts need help, not punishment," she added.

Under the centre-right coalition government's proposal, both possession and the use of small quantities of drugs, including heroin, cocaine and cannabis, would no longer be punishable under the criminal code, but users would still have to seek help.

"They are still forbidden, but no longer punishable," Health Minister Bent Hoie said.

Proponents of the bill argue that criminal prosecution of drug users can be counterproductive as it deters those with abuse problems from seeking help, makes it more difficult for relatives to detect problems and stigmatises an already vulnerable demographic.

The proposal comes with set thresholds for what should be considered a small amount for different illicit substances: two grams for cocaine, heroin or amphetamines, 10 grams for cannabis and 500 grams (17.6 oz) for khat.

As the government only controls a minority in parliament, passing the legislation will require support from the opposition, with some arguing the measure could encourage drug use.

According to a survey published in early February by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, around five percent of respondents in Norway say they have used cannabis in the last 12 months, and one percent have tried psychotropic drugs, such as cocaine and amphetamines.

Despite having one of the highest living standards in Europe, Norway -- and other Nordic countries -- have seen higher numbers of drug-related deaths per capita than the rest of Europe.

In recent years, 260 people have died annually from a drug overdose in Norway, according to a report published last year by the Norwegian Directorate of Health.

Scientists have remained perplexed by what psychedelic substances do to one's brain. But drugs like LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) possess the capability to help researchers and doctors understand how the brain operates.

Now, a new study sheds light on how LSD alters what happens in one's brain. The study, undertaken by scientists from the University of Cambridge, and Imperial College in London attempted to map the substance's effects on the brain, and how they vary from the brain's operations in normal circumstances.

They found that LSD enabled the brain to trespass anatomical rules, for it triggers an altered state of consciousness.

ScienceAlert cited Andrea Luppi, one of the researchers from the University of Cambridge as saying that "the psychedelic compound LSD induces a profoundly altered state of consciousness".

In the larger academic sense, the study is attempting to understand "dynamic functional connectivity". As part of this, scientists try to understand whether activities in the brain display functional change over time and whether it is flowing like human consciousness.

Malaysia's coast guard made its largest-ever seizure of Methamphetamine as it seized 2.12 tonnes of the drug. The value of the cache is USD 26.2 million. The drugs were disguised as tea in a shipment believed to have come from Myanmar.

Coastguard chief Zubil Mat Som said the drugs found on a boat in northern Penang state were worth around 105.9 ringgit ($26.2 million). A local suspected trafficker was arrested.

"It is the coastguard's record-breaking seizure in its 15-year history," he told AFP.

He said that it was likely that the drug was smuggled out from Myanmar's 'Golden Triangle'.

Mat Som said that the shipment may have meant to be sent to other countries where it would fetch more price than in Malaysia.

Zubil said on December 9 a coastguard vessel had noticed a recreational boat moving suspiciously off Penang island in broad daylight.

A chase ensued after a lone 26-year-old man aboard refused to stop. He subsequently jumped off the vessel and was arrested, the coastguard said in a statement.

Malaysian law provides for a mandatory death penalty for convicted drug traffickers.

A group of scientists have discovered the unthinkable. A psychedelic drug, commonly known as DMT (dimethyltryptamine) recently helped create new nerve cells in mice.

The ingredient is found in ayahuasca, a kind of tea famous in South America. It is used in rituals intended to “heal”.

Besides triggering the creation of new nerve cells, DMT also helped improve spatial learning and improvement in memory tasks, as first reported by Medical News Today.

Based on the response among mice, scientists speculate that this could help treat neurodegenerative disease like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. In a neurodegenerative disease, nerve cells are lost over time in different parts of the nervous system, mostly the brain.

This could be reversed by restoring the capacity to produce new nerve cells, a technique known as “neurogenesis”.

If successful, it could end many woes for humans. Most nerve cells are produced in the human body before birth. The psychedelic tea contains antidepressant properties, which may explain its ability ro recreate nerve cells.

According to Nawaz, Imran has been consuming charas (cannabis) regularly and also snorts cocaine.

Both the pacer spearheads played together for Pakistan during the 1970s and 1980s. He recalled an incident that took place during 1987 Tour against England where Imran was struggling to bowl. As the team returned to Islamabad, Imran visited Nawaz's house and is said to have indulged in drugs.

Nawaz went on to name Salim Malik, Mohsin Khan and Abdul Qadir who accompanied the then Pakistani skipper.

In the video below, Nawaz said: "He also snorts something. He (Imran Khan) has been consuming cannabis, he used to do it in London and even at my home. In 1987, when Pakistan faced England in a cricket match and he did not bowl well, he had come to my house and said along with Mohsin Khan, Abdul Qadir, Salim Malik in Islamabad for a meal and also consumed charas. He also snorts something and consumes cocaine as well. In London, he would roll something and snort it."

Pakistan's role in fomenting terror in India and elsewhere is perhaps well-documented. But a new report says that over 80 per cent of surveyed convicted drug peddlers say that most narcotic drugs enter India illegally from Pakistan. A recent article in Eureporter has shed light on this. Eureporter is a Brussells based European multimedia news platform.

A survey was carried out involving 872 convicted drug peddlers. Majority of them (83.94 per cent) said that drugs were mainly trafficked illegally into India from Pakistan. This was followed by Nepal (5.05 per cent) and Afghanistan (4.24 per cent)

A recent report from South Asia Democratic Forum said that number of seizures of consignments containing drugs as well as ammunition indicated that activities of terror groups and drug peddlers had increased. This is particularly evident in Punjab.

In June 2019, customs officials in Amritsar seized a heroin cargo worth Rs 2700 crore. The drugs were intended to be trafficked to Kashmir.

Pakistani state uses drug trafficking as a way to raise money to fund terror activities. Narco-terrorism is an integral part of Pakistan's state sponsorship of cross-border terrorism. These funds are then used to conduct asymmetric warfare in the region, mainly against India. This in turn is used to achieve certain foreign policy goals.

DMP Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam told the newspaper that the termination proceedings will end soon. A departmental case has been filed against them and they will be dismissed after the legal process is duly followed.

"Policemen who are involved with drugs or helping drug traders will be arrested and prosecuted. At (police) unit meetings, I have said tell me if anyone of is addicted to drugs so we can arrange for their treatment," Islam said.

The sackings come at the backdrop of increased allegations of police involvement in drug mafia and of some using themselves.

"We first identified a list of suspected drug abusers, scrutinised the list, and finally tested them. We have conducted dope test on over 100 police officials,? the DMP chief told the newspaper.

He said the sackings should send out the clear message that drug trade will not be tolerated.
More drug tests in the police force are expected in the coming weeks.

The Daily Star reported that the suspended officials are being treated as regular criminals.

Customs Air Intelligence Unit Officials in Chennai have seized Pseudoephedrine powder worth over 54,000USD or Rs. 40 lakhs. The contraband was hidden in courier parcels that were bound for Australia via courier. It was based on intelligence inputs that the suspicious parcels were detained and examined.

The first parcel contained Lumbo-sacral orthotic belts(used for back pain and related ailments) and the other contained trophies, both of which were found to be unusually heavy. On being cut open, the belts three plastic pouches with white crystalline powder were recovered. In all, the three pouches had contained 24 smaller pouches that had about 2kg of the powder.

In the second consignment, on opening the wooden base of the trophies, a plastic pouch containing 1 kg of white crystalline powder was found concealed inside each of them. 2 kg of white crystalline powder was recovered from both trophies. Total 4 kg Pseudoephedrine valued at Rs. 40 lakhs was recovered and seized under the NDPS Act, 1985.

The white crystalline powder tested positive for Pseudoephedrine, a controlled substance covered under NDPS Act, 1985.

Pseudoephedrine is used for the temporary relief of nasal congestion and sinus pain/pressure caused by infection such as clod/flu or other breathing illnesses. It works by narrowing the blood vessels to decrease swelling and congestion. It is also said to be used in higher doses to avoid drowsiness and increase the state of alertness.

Pseudoephedrine is a sought-after chemical precursor in the illicit manufacture of Methamphetamine, commonly known as Meth.

In low to moderate doses, methamphetamine can elevate mood, increase alertness, concentration and energy in fatigued individuals, reduce appetite, and promote weight loss.

“This is a new modus operandi of concealment and is difficult to detect, this smugglers are finding newer methods to sneak the contraband out of the country. Our last seizure of this drug was back in February this year. We have been maintaining vigil” Rajan Chaudhary, Commissioner, Customs, told WION.

Follow up searches were carried out and one person has been arrested. Further investigation is in progress.

Drug cartels thrive during COVID-19 pandemic | World News

Italian police said Wednesday they had seized a 14-tonne haul of amphetamines made by the Islamic State group in Syria, calling it the biggest seizure of such drugs in the world.

The drug, in the form of around 84 million Captagon tablets hidden inside industrial goods within containers, was worth about one billion euros ($1.12 billion), and intended to be sold on the European market "to finance terrorism," the finance police of Naples said in a statement.

"We know that the Islamic State finances its terrorist activities mainly by trafficking drugs made in Syria which in the past few years has become the world's largest producer of amphetamines," the statement said.

Police said three suspect containers had arrived at the port of Salerno, just south of Naples, containing large cylindrical paper rolls for industrial use as well as industrial machinery.

Cutting open the paper rolls and metal gearwheels with chainsaws, police found them filled with tablets. Video images taken by police showed pills spilling out of the rolls and wheels as they were forced opened.

"This is the largest seizure of amphetamines in the world," police said.

JIHAD DRUG

Captagon, a brand name, was originally for medical use but illegal versions have been dubbed "the Jihad Drug" -- after being widely used by IS fighters in combat -- the police said.

Citing the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Naples police said IS "makes extensive use of it in all territories over which it exerts influence and where it controls the drug trade".

Once the plants are established, "it is easy for IS to produce large quantities also for the world market for synthetic drugs, in order to quickly accumulate substantial funding," the statement said.

The amount of drugs seized were sufficient to satisfy the entire European market, police said, without providing a time frame.

A "consortium" of criminal groups were likely involved for the distribution of the drugs, including possibly many clans within the infamous Camorra of Naples, police said.

"The hypothesis is that during the lockdown... production and distribution of synthetic drugs in Europe has practically stopped," the statement said.

"Many smugglers, even in consortiums, have turned to Syria where production, however, does not seem to have slowed down."
