In today’s weird news, four children have been hospitalised in England’s Epsom, Surrey after ingesting what the police suspect to be cannabis laced sweets. Yes, you read that correctly -&nbsp;the children had weed candy!<o:p></o:p>

The case came to light when the Surrey police responded to a call from&nbsp;ambulance services on Saturday at 2:15 local time.

When they arrived at the scene situated around a shopping street near a local park, they discovered three children - a girl and two boys, projectile vomiting, and falling in &amp; out of consciousness after eating some mysterious sweets.

All the three victims are&nbsp;12-13 years old. Another boy aged twelve&nbsp;who had also eaten the sweets but displayed none of the symptoms, was also taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure. <o:p></o:p>

Detective Sergeant Lee Marks said, "We are, of course, trying to understand what these sweets are, where they came from and what they contain...These types of products, which may be marketed as ‘cannabis infused’ or ‘THC infused’ are illegal, and therefore unregulated, in the UK. They can appear to be commercial products with professional packaging, but this should not be taken as a sign that they are safe or legal".

According to a press release by the police, there have previously been similar reports from the area. Earlier the sweet in question was “Jelly apple rings”. The person who had ingested these laced jelly apple rings didn’t have symptoms this bad. <o:p></o:p>

Police are now investigating where the laced sweets came from, who gave these children the sweets and if they were given the sweets at the park.<o:p></o:p>

The method could represent a rapid and inexpensive way to repurpose existing therapies into new treatments for this progressive, debilitating neurodegenerative condition. Importantly, it could also help reveal new, unexplored targets for therapy by pointing to mechanisms of drug action.&nbsp;

"Repurposing FDA-approved drugs for Alzheimer's disease is an attractive idea that can help accelerate the arrival of effective treatment -- but unfortunately, even for previously approved drugs, clinical trials require substantial resources, making it impossible to evaluate every drug in patients with Alzheimer's disease," said researcher Artem Sokolov from Harvard Medical School.&nbsp;

"We therefore built a framework for prioritising drugs, helping clinical studies to focus on the most promising ones," Sokolov added.&nbsp;

For the study, published in Nature Communications, the team described their framework, called Drug Repurposing in Alzheimer's Disease (DRIAD), which relies on machine learning -- a branch of artificial intelligence in which systems are 'trained' on vast amounts of data, 'learn' to identify telltale patterns and augment researchers' and clinicians' decision-making.&nbsp;

DRIAD works by measuring what happens to human brain neural cells when treated with a drug.&nbsp;

"We therefore built a framework for prioritising drugs, helping clinical studies to focus on the most promising ones," Sokolov added. Twenty-six Bangladeshi policemen are undergoing termination proceedings for failing a surprise drug test, according to media reports.

The erring officials include a traffic sergeant, four sub-inspectors, three assistant sub-inspectors, a 'nayek', and 17 constables -- all members of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), the Dhaka Tribune reported.

The DMP is conducting surprise dope tests on law enforcement officials as part of a wider crackdown on drug peddling. Over 100 policemen have been tested so far, the report added.

Most of the erring officials were found using yaba pills (amphetamine) and marijuana.

DMP Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam told the newspaper that the termination proceedings will end soon. A departmental case has been filed against them and they will be dismissed after the legal process is duly followed.

"Policemen who are involved with drugs or helping drug traders will be arrested and prosecuted. At (police) unit meetings, I have said tell me if anyone of is addicted to drugs so we can arrange for their treatment," Islam said.

The sackings come at the backdrop of increased allegations of police involvement in drug mafia and of some using themselves.

"We first identified a list of suspected drug abusers, scrutinised the list, and finally tested them. We have conducted dope test on over 100 police officials,? the DMP chief told the newspaper.

He said the sackings should send out the clear message that drug trade will not be tolerated. 
More drug tests in the police force are expected in the coming weeks.
