The US health department on Thursday announced proposed measures that would effectively ban gender-affirming care for transgender youth, a major escalation of the Trump administration's efforts to roll back protections for trans people.The series of sweeping proposals announced by US health chief Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and other officials would cut off vital federal funding from hospitals that provide pediatric gender transition services -- including puberty blockers, hormone therapies and surgical interventions -- even in states where they are legal.In announcing his proposals -- which are not final and must go through lengthy review and public comment -- Kennedy called gender-affirming care "malpractice" based on "junk science driven by ideological pursuits."His health department this year released a report largely written by critics of gender transition that emphasised risks of gender-affirming care and urged counseling before interventions -- a document that proved central to Thursday's announcement.The proposed measures would prohibit reimbursements for minors' gender-affirming care from Medicaid, the federal program that provides health care coverage to low-income children and adults.Even more limiting, it would revoke all funding from both Medicaid and Medicare -- the health care program for elderly adults and disabled people -- from any hospital that provides such care.Such a move would place extreme financial hardship on facilities if they continued to provide such health services.It puts medical providers in an "extremely precarious position," said Michael Ulrich, a Boston University professor of public health and law."I'm not sure there's a provider that exists that doesn't rely substantially on federal money," he told AFP.<h2>- 'Life-saving' care -</h2>The American Civil Liberties Union vowed a legal battle, calling the proposals "cruel" as well as "unconstitutional, saying they target "a vulnerable population for political gain."The American Academy of Pediatrics -- which just abruptly lost federal funds in the millions including for initiatives to prevent infant death, according to a Washington Post report -- called Thursday's actions and rhetoric "harmful.""These rules help no one, do nothing to address health care costs, and unfairly stigmatize a population of young people," the organization's president said in a statement.The LGBTQ advocacy organization Human Rights Campaign said the proposals would "force providers into an impossible choice: stop providing health care to trans youth in order to protect federal funding for every other patient."Zoe Taylor, a family doctor in the western US state of Washington, called gender-affirming health care "life-saving."The physician, a fellow with the advocacy organization Physicians for Reproductive Health, said in her practice she's seen "youth thrive once their gender dysphoria is treated.""Treating trans kids with gender-affirming care prevents and treats other mental health issues that come from society's reaction to trans youth, and also to their own gender dysphoria," she told AFP.The proposals are an intrusion on the relationship between patients, their families and physicians, she said.<h2>- 'Extremely dangerous' -</h2>Throughout the first year of his second term, President Donald Trump has demonized any recognition of gender diversity and placed strong focus on attacking transgender people.But the push to withhold broader federal health funding from any provider who offers transgender care scaled up Trump's crusade dramatically.And it came one day after a split House of Representatives narrowly passed a bill that would criminalize providing gender-affirming medical care to trans minors.Transgender people are a small proportion of the population, but lawyer Ulrich said the issue is both "extremely bad for transgender youth" and could "open the door" for other controversial government health care decisions."I don't think that enough people recognize the extent to which this is the federal government saying, 'We have the authority to declare to hospitals throughout the country what kind of health care they can and cannot provide,'" he said."It's an extremely, extremely dangerous proposition for the future."

US President Donald Trump said Thursday he was signing an executive order reclassifying marijuana as a less dangerous drug, in one of America's biggest shifts in drug policy for years.The move stops short of full federal legalisation for recreational use across the United States but is aimed at encouraging medical research on the use of cannabis products."Today, I'm pleased to announce that I will be signing an executive order to reschedule marijuana from a Schedule I to a Schedule III controlled substance with legitimate medical uses," Trump said in the Oval Office.Marijuana is currently classified as a Schedule I substance -- in the same league as drugs like heroin and LSD. The US government considers these drugs to have high abuse potential without accepted use for medical treatment.Schedule III substances, which include ketamine and anabolic steroids, are considered to have medical value and less potential for abuse.Trump, who was surrounded by white-coated medical experts for the announcement, added that the order "is not the legalization" of marijuana "and no way sanctions its use as a recreational drug."The teetotal 79-year-old added: "I've always told my children, don't take drugs, no drinking, no smoking, and just stay away from drugs."Dozens of US states already have legal medical marijuana programs, and many also have approved its recreational use."A lot of people want to see it, the reclassification, because it leads to tremendous amounts of research that can't be done unless you reclassify, so we are looking at that very strongly," Trump said earlier this week.Easing federal restrictions could have ripple effects, including lowering barriers to pursue research, as authorizing clinical studies on Schedule I substances can require many layers of approval.It could also have major tax implications for companies that legally grow and sell cannabis.US presidents cannot unilaterally reclassify a drug, but Republican Trump's order directs Attorney General Pam Bondi to expedite the process.Democrat Joe Biden's administration had previously pursued reclassification, but efforts stalled and were not completed before Trump took office in early 2025.The US has a patchwork of state-level regulations regarding the commercial distribution, recreational possession, and personal cultivation of cannabis.In small amounts, it is already legal for recreational use in 24 states, as well as the capital, Washington.

US President Donald Trump said Thursday he was signing an executive order reclassifying marijuana as a less dangerous drug, in one of America's biggest shifts in drug policy for years. This came amid the growing public dissatisfaction with Trump’s handling of the economy. Several opinion polls have recently shown that many Americans are frustrated as inflation has increased following the imposition of tariffs.

Briefings to the House and Senate, led by Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, took place amid growing unease in Congress over the president’s widening operations in waters off Latin America, as lawmakers consider steps to rein in Trump’s authority to act without legislative approval. US officials say the operations target narcotics bound for American shores. Critics counter that the campaign -- which has destroyed at least 26 boats and killed at least 95 people, according to US military figures -- is legally ambiguous and strategically unclear. "The administration came to this briefing empty handed... and if they can't be transparent on this, how can you trust their transparency on all the other issues swirling about in the Caribbean?" Schumer said. The boat strikes have drawn particular scrutiny over a September 2 operation in which US forces carried out a follow-up attack on a disabled boat, killing two survivors of the initial strike. Lawmakers from both parties have demanded answers on the legal basis for that attack and why Congress has been denied full access to video footage, which so far has been shown only to a handful of senior lawmakers. Beyond the boat strikes, the administration has ratcheted up pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro -- deepening sanctions, deploying warships and aircraft near his coastline and seizing an oil tanker linked to Caracas. Maduro's days are numbered: Trump Trump has declared that Maduro's "days are numbered" and pointedly refused to rule out a US ground invasion. Legal experts say the case highlights a central tension in Trump's approach -- that treating drug trafficking as an act of war may violate international law. This week, Trump signed an executive order classifying fentanyl -- which is stocked and administered by hospitals -- as a "weapon of mass destruction," an escalation supporters say reflects the gravity of the opioid crisis. Specialists note, however, that most of the intercepted boats were believed to be carrying cocaine, not fentanyl. Despite mounting scrutiny, the campaign shows no sign of slowing. On Monday, the Pentagon said it had carried out fresh strikes against alleged drug boats in the Pacific, killing eight people described as "narco-terrorists." The Trump administration has told a federal court that construction of a new White House ballroom must proceed because it is tied to national security needs. The argument was made in a court filing on Monday (December 15), responding to a lawsuit submitted last week by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The group is seeking an immediate pause on the project until it undergoes independent design scrutiny, environmental review, public consultation and congressional approval.&nbsp;As part of its response, the administration submitted a declaration from a senior US Secret Service official saying that additional construction activity at the former East Wing site is required to satisfy the agency’s security standards. The government also indicated it is willing to brief the judge on classified security concerns privately, without the plaintiffs present. The filing provides the clearest picture so far of the ballroom project, shedding light on how it received rapid internal approval and how its scope has continued to evolve. Officials acknowledged that the final architectural plans are still incomplete, even as demolition and preparatory work at the site continues.&nbsp;Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-labels-colombia-s-clan-del-golfo-as-terrorist-organisation-amid-peace-talks-1765901719483">US labels Colombia's Clan del Golfo as terrorist organisation amid peace talks</a>&nbsp;John Stanwich, the National Park Service’s White House liaison, wrote that underground construction remains ongoing, with foundation work expected to begin in January. It also claims objections to future construction are premature because final designs have not yet been approved.&nbsp;Additionally, the government contends that the preservation group cannot demonstrate immediate harm, as above-ground construction is still months away. It said consultations with federal planning and design bodies will occur in due course, without the need for court intervention. “Even if the plaintiff were able to clear the legal hurdles of standing, ripeness and mootness, it would still fail to justify the extraordinary relief it seeks,” the administration said.&nbsp;While the ballroom proposal has drawn backlash from architects, preservationists and political opponents, the lawsuit represents the strongest effort yet to slow or derail a project that would be nearly double the size of the White House as it stood before the East Wing’s removal. A court hearing on the matter was scheduled for Tuesday in Washington.

US President Donald Trump on Monday (Dec 15) announced he was classifying fentanyl as a weapon of mass destruction, escalating his administration’s crackdown on drug cartels across Latin America and framing the opioid crisis as a national security threat on par with nuclear and chemical weapons.<h2>Deadlier than a bomb?</h2>Speaking at the White House while signing an executive order, Trump said fentanyl was deadlier than any bomb. "No bomb does what this is doing -- 200-300,000 people die every year, that we know of".The executive order places illicit fentanyl in the same category as weapons of mass destruction, arguing that its production and distribution threaten US national security and fuel instability across the region and at the country’s borders. The document states that fentanyl is "closer to a chemical weapon than a narcotic," and that the manufacture and distribution of the drug "threatens our national security and fuels lawlessness in our hemisphere and at our borders."<h2>Is fentanyl more dangerous than a bomb?</h2>No, official data does not support the Trumps fatality figures. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the country recorded an estimated 80,000 overdose deaths in 2024, with roughly 48,000 linked to synthetic opioids such as fentanyl.However, the narrative aligns with Trump's broader campaign against what his administration calls "narco-terrorists." Since early September, the US military has carried out strikes on more than 20 suspected drug-smuggling boats in the Caribbean, operations that have killed nearly 90 people. Trump has claimed each vessel destroyed saves 25,000 American lives.Experts note, however, that most of the boats targeted are believed to be carrying cocaine, not fentanyl. The synthetic opioid largely enters the United States through land routes from Mexico, rather than maritime smuggling from countries like Colombia or Venezuela.The strikes have been accompanied by a significant US naval buildup in the Caribbean, including the deployment of the world's largest aircraft carrier and multiple warships. US military aircraft have also conducted repeated flights along Venezuela’s coastline in recent weeks.Washington insists the buildup is focused on counter-narcotics operations. Meanwhile, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has accused the US of using drug trafficking as a pretext for pursuing regime change. The Trump administration has linked Maduro directly to the issue, accusing him of leading the so-called "Cartel of the Suns," which it designated a narco-terrorist organisation last month, and offering a $50 million reward for information leading to his capture. &nbsp;

Since early September, the US military has carried out strikes on more than 20 suspected drug-smuggling boats in the Caribbean, operations that have killed nearly 90 people. Trump has claimed each vessel destroyed saves 25,000 American lives. Experts note, however, that most of the boats targeted are believed to be carrying cocaine, not fentanyl. The synthetic opioid largely enters the United States through land routes from Mexico, rather than maritime smuggling from countries like Colombia or Venezuela. The strikes have been accompanied by a significant US naval buildup in the Caribbean, including the deployment of the world's largest aircraft carrier and multiple warships. US military aircraft have also conducted repeated flights along Venezuela’s coastline in recent weeks. Washington insists the buildup is focused on counter-narcotics operations. Meanwhile, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has accused the US of using drug trafficking as a pretext for pursuing regime change. The Trump administration has linked Maduro directly to the issue, accusing him of leading the so-called "Cartel of the Suns," which it designated a narco-terrorist organisation last month, and offering a $50 million reward for information leading to his capture.

Two American troops and an interpreter were killed in central Syria on Saturday after an alleged member of the Islamic State group opened fire on a joint US-Syrian patrol, officials said. US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the deaths on X after Syria's state media earlier reported that an attack in the city of Palmyra had wounded American and Syrian troops. "An ambush by a lone ISIS gunman" resulted in the deaths and injuries to three additional troops, said CENTCOM, which oversees the US military in the Middle East. "The gunman was engaged and killed," it said. "The savage who perpetrated this attack was killed by partner forces," US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth wrote on X. Parnell said the identities of the deceased troops would be withheld until after their families were notified. The incident is the first of its kind reported since Islamist-led forces overthrew longtime Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad in December last year, and rekindled the country's ties with the United States. A Pentagon official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the attack "took place in an area where the Syrian President does not have control." Syrian state news agency SANA, quoting a security source, earlier reported that several US troops and two Syrian service members had been wounded in the attack. The soldiers were taking part in a "joint field tour" in Palmyra, which was once under the control of the Islamic State (IS) group, SANA reported. A witness, who asked to remain anonymous, said he heard the shots coming from inside the base. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor, which has a wide network of sources inside Syria, the meeting came as part of an "American strategy to strengthen its presence and foothold in the Syrian desert". Helicopters evacuated the wounded to the Al-Tanf base in southern Syria, where American troops are deployed, SANA said. Last month, during Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa's visit to Washington, Damascus formally joined the US-led global coalition against the IS group. Marijuana Reclassification: President Donald Trump is reportedly considering an executive order to ease federal marijuana restrictions, potentially reclassifying the drug from Schedule I to Schedule III. This move, which would mark the most significant change in U.S. marijuana policy in decades, would not legalize cannabis but could allow for broader medical research and provide tax benefits to the cannabis industry.
