Former US President Donald Trump is "surprised" that Harry, the younger son of Britain's soon-to-be coronated King Charles III, has been invited to the grand coronation ceremony in London's Westminster Abbey.&nbsp;

The drama surrounding the British royal family has also captured the interest of the former US&nbsp;president. Trump said that he&nbsp;did not expect that Harry would attend his father's coronation.

In a Wednesday interview with London-based GB News, Trump said Elizabeth was treated disrespectfully by Meghan, and added there being "no reason" to do that.

"I was actually surprised that Harry was invited, to be honest," Trump said. "He said some terrible things, when you see what he said, and the book was just...to me, it was horrible."

Trump, who is in the midst of his third presidential campaign, said that if he were the president now, he would have attended the coronation. He also said that Biden's absence showed a lack of respect and speculated that it was due to the president's physical abilities.

“It’s the most ridiculous, disgusting story,” said Trump, as quoted by Reuters, in a video where he appeared hunched over a conference table and went on to call the allegations “made up.” The former president reiterated his denial of the women’s claims and has previously said that these allegations are politically motivated.

While the entire deposition footage was not released, portions of the transcript have been filed publicly. Trump’s lawyer had previously said the former president has decided against testifying. The trial where Carroll said after raping her, Trump defamed her when she spoke the truth, is in its sixth day and is expected to extend into next week.

Carroll is suing Trump for battery and defamation in a civil trial. The former magazine advice columnist who first publicly aired her allegations against Trump in 2019, has accused the former president of raping her at Bergdorf Goodman, a luxury department store based on Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, New York.&nbsp;

Trump was also asked about why he was not in court, on Wednesday to which he responded by saying, “I hear we're doing very well in New York.” This comes as the former president recently addressed reporters in Scotland where he was seen playing golf. The deposition also comes a day after Carroll’s friend, author Lisa Birnbach testified against Trump to a jury in Manhattan federal court.&nbsp;

Two women testified against Trump

During the hearing on Wednesday, another woman claimed that Trump sexually assaulted her back in 2005 at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida. Former People magazine reporter Natasha Stoynoff also told jurors that the former president forcibly kissed her for a “few minutes” until a butler interrupted the alleged assault.

“It really had a profound effect on me,” said Stoynoff while crying and described the intense shame and self-doubt she felt after the encounter, reported Reuters. Her testimony also follows Jessica Leeds’ who told jurors on Tuesday, that Trump allegedly grabbed her chest and ran his hand up her skirt as they sat side by side in first class.&nbsp;

Leeds said she was in her late 30s travelling from Dallas or Atlanta to New York’s LaGuardia Airport when “all of a sudden Trump decided to kiss me and grope me,” as quoted by the Associated Press.&nbsp;

She added, “He was trying to kiss me, trying to pull me towards him. He was grabbing my breasts. It was like he had 40 zillion hands. It was like a tussling match between the two of us.” Subsequently, she wriggled free of Trump and stormed to the back of the plane.&nbsp;

Robert Reed, a justice of the New York Supreme Court, stated that Trump's assertions "fail as a matter of constitutional law," allowing for journalists to carry out lawful, standard news gathering. These actions, according to Reed, "are at the core of protected first amendment activity."

“The&nbsp;New York&nbsp;Times is pleased with the judge’s decision today. It is an important precedent reaffirming that the press is protected when it engages in routine newsgathering to obtain information of vital importance to the public,”&nbsp;Charlie Stadtlander, a spokesperson for the Times, told the Guardian.&nbsp;

“We will weigh our client’s options and continue to vigorously fight on his behalf,” Trump’s lawyer Alina Habba said in a statement.

The former president also sued CNN last year, alleging defamation and asking for $475 million in damages. Former US president Donald Trump has courted controversy yet again after it was revealed he removed an NBC reporter from his plane for asking questions about the criminal probe into Stormy Daniels hush money payments.

The incident allegedly took place on March 25&nbsp;after Trump's campaign rally in Waco, Texas, according to Fox News. He was speaking to a group of reporters aboard his plane when NBC News reporter&nbsp;Vaughn Hillyard said the former prez appeared frustrated by Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg's investigation.&nbsp;

"I’m not frustrated by anything. What am I, frustrated? I just did a speech for two hours. I’m not frustrated by it. It’s a fake investigation. We did nothing wrong. I told you that. … It’s the exact opposite,"&nbsp;Trump replied, according to a recording obtained by the Washington Post.

"This is fake news, and NBC is one of the worst at it. Don’t ask me any more questions. I heard you’re a nice guy from NBC, but you’re not," he added.&nbsp;

The move is in consideration amid concerns that tens of thousands of migrants may travel within the US borders once Title 42 is lifted.&nbsp;

Title 42 refers to the Covid-related restrictions under which the US authorities send away hundreds of thousands of migrants, including families, back to Mexico citing the contagious nature of COVID-19.

Earlier, the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) had warned the migrants that illegal entry into the United States "will result in removal."

People who are not deported are placed into immigration removal proceedings and released into the US pending their hearings. These hearings can take years. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) data shows deportations have plummeted under President Biden, Fox News reported.

<h2>But not all migrants are sent away</h2>

According to the US Customs and Border Protection, only about 46 per cent of migrant encounters at the border resulted in a Title 42 expulsion. Last month, the Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told the Senate in Washington D.C. that of nearly 1.3 million migrant entries in the Finance Year 2022, only about 360,000 were deported.&nbsp;

It was not revealed how many of the aforementioned 1.3 million migrant entries were illegal.

The United States, under former President Donald Trump's administration, in November 2018, had sent more than 5,000 active-duty troops at the southern borders. It was deemed a show of force against the caravans of Central American migrants that Trump had characterised as an "invasion" of the United States.

Allegedly, the link was posted under the header: “ICYMI: ‘Trump Rape Accuser Admitted to Sexually Harassing Roger Ailes — Told Him He Was Her Future Husband’.”&nbsp;

The post and the article it was linked to are now missing from the Donald J Trump website. It could have been removed owing to a warning Trump’s lawyer received from a judge for the ex-president’s sensational posts on his social media website, Truth Social.

In the article for “Gateway Pundit,” Hoft claims that Carroll, in an interview with Vanity Fair, admitted that she was never raped.

Citing the interview, he writes, “Back in June 2019, E. Jean Carroll sat down for an interview with Vanity Fair following her accusations against Trump. The article paints Carroll as a complete lunatic who painted her trees outside her log cabin and travelled the country with her blue-dyed poodle but not her cat, Vagina T. Judge Lewis Kaplan of the US District Court had cautioned Trump’s legal team over the former president’s social media remarks regarding the case. He warned them that additional statements could create “a new source of potential liability” for the businessman.

While the link for Hoft’s writing may have been removed from Trump’s website, the article itself is still available to the public.

In the article for “Gateway Pundit,” Hoft claims that Carroll, in an interview with Vanity Fair, admitted that she was never raped.

Citing the interview, he writes, “Back in June 2019, E. Jean Carroll sat down for an interview with Vanity Fair following her accusations against Trump. The article paints Carroll as a complete lunatic who painted her trees outside her log cabin and travelled the country with her blue-dyed poodle but not her cat, Vagina T. Fireball, who she left back at home.”

“E. Jean Carroll admits in the interview that Donald Trump did not ‘rape’ her because she did not want to identify as a victim. The woman is conflicted,” he adds.

In his argument, he also references an article from the Daily Mail in 2019, where Carroll was quoted as stating that she had sexually harassed former Fox News CEO, Roger Ailes, who himself was accused of misconduct by several women.&nbsp;

According to the article, Carroll reportedly admitted, “Oh, I did it. Every day I had a chance. I call him the pearl of his sex. Right on the air.” She also allegedly revealed that she would “roll up my trouser legs. I would wait for the camera to come over. Then I would slowly pull up the right and then the left trouser leg,” and ask Ailes to twirl for her while referring to him as her “future husband.”

The latest in a string of polls over the past few years shows that just one in five Americans think their country stands above all others in the world. The share of those who think other countries are better than the US&nbsp;rose from 19 per cent in 2016 to 27 per cent now.

The cultural change reflected by these figures comes from a survey conducted by the Wall Street Journal and the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. NORC is one of the largest independent social research organisations in the US.

It found not only that the notion of American Exceptionalism is fading from the national consciousness but also a decline in a range of other values. A somewhat wistful headline over the Wall Street Journal report on the survey said: “America Pulls Back from Values That Once Defined It.”

They include, according to the survey, patriotism, religion and tolerance. Thirty-eight per cent of those polled said patriotism was very important to them, down from 70 per cent when the question was first asked in 1998. On religion, the trend was down sharply, too, from 62 to 39.

Tolerance for others, deemed very important by Americans in previous surveys, dropped from 80 per cent to 58 per cent – not surprising in a country as deeply polarised as the United States.

Bill McInturff, a pollster who worked on previous surveys, described the differences as dramatic. “It paints a new and surprising portrait of a changing America,” he told the Journal. “Perhaps the toll of our political division, Covid, and the lowest economic confidence in decades is having a startling effect on our core values.”

Only one of the core values the survey covered showed an upward swing: money. It was deemed very important by 31 per cent in 1998 and 43 per cent now. In this, and similar surveys over the past few years, young Americans (aged between 18&nbsp;and 29) scored lowest on the importance they gave to the concepts that combine to the idea of exceptionalism.

They also make up the largest group of those who say that the United States is one of the world’s greatest countries, along with others.

That&nbsp;sober&nbsp;view brings to mind a response then-President Barack Obama gave at a news conference in Brussels in 2009 when asked whether he believed in American exceptionalism. “I believe in American exceptionalism, just as the Brits believe in British exceptionalism and the Greeks in Greek exceptionalism.”

The remark prompted rebukes from American conservatism, who interpreted it as undermining the standing of the United States in the world.

Oddly, the idea that the United States is exceptional is rooted in the writings of a Frenchman, political scientist Alexis de Tocqueville, after travelling in America in 1831. Through much of its history, US&nbsp;leaders described their country in terms that echoed his notion of a special nation.

Thomas Jefferson, one of the country’s Founding Fathers, frequently referred to it as “the Empire of Liberty.” President Ronald Reagan, borrowing from a 1630 sermon, rarely missed an opportunity to talk about his country as a “shining city on a hill.” Abraham Lincoln spoke of America as “the last best hope on earth.” More recently, the late Secretary of State Madeleine Albright referred to “the indispensable nation.”

While that may have raised eyebrows, then and now, by foreigners who saw the United States in less glowing colours, there is no dispute that it played a role so dominant after the end of the Second World War that the 20th century merited being called the American Century.

In a book of that title, the late British editor and writer Harold Evans noted that “the 20th century belongs to the United States because the triumph of its faith in its founding idea of political and economic freedom.”

With China now trying to equal or surpass the United States economically and perhaps eventually militarily, the 21st century is yet to earn a superpower-specific designation.

Meanwhile, there is a flip side to the “exceptionalism” label. Call it 'Only in America.'

Only in America are there more guns than people. Only in America are there more mass shootings than days in the month. Only in America is it easier for an 18-year-old citizen in most states to buy an assault rifle than a six-pack of beer. Only in America, driven by a toxic blend of guns and fear, can you get shot for knocking on the wrong door.

Only in America can a president who lost an election convince at least a third of the population that the vote was stolen, despite abundant evidence to the contrary. And only in America do you have legislators on the far right who describe people jailed for storming the Capitol to prevent the peaceful transfer of power, as political prisoners.

In America, a long-held belief in American exceptionalism is fading

E. Jean Carroll, a former magazine columnist, testified against Donald Trump at a New York court on Wednesday, saying the former US president&nbsp;raped her at a New York City department store.&nbsp;

“I’m here because Donald Trump raped me, and when I wrote about it, he said it didn’t happen,” Carroll testified. “He lied and shattered my reputation and I’m here to try to get my life back.”

Carroll accused Trump of raping her at Bergdorf Goodman, a luxury department store based on Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, New York, in the spring of 1996.&nbsp;

She said after raping her, Trump defamed her when she spoke the truth and let the cat out of the bag. Carroll is suing Trump for battery and defamation in a civil trial. Trump, however, refuted her claims.

Carroll testified that she was "delighted" to go shopping with Trump because she felt it would be a nice story to share with her friends.

“Well, it was such a funny New York scene,” Carroll said adding, “I love to give advice and here was Donald Trump asking me for advice about buying a present.”

“I was absolutely enchanted, I could only think of it as a scene that is such a great story,” Carroll said.

According to her testimony, once they took the escalator from the first floor, Carroll was too preoccupied with Trump to observe anybody else.

“I wasn’t looking, I was watching him and watching that I didn’t fall when the escalator hit the top.”

Carroll noted that she was likely flirting with Trump in a non-intimate and non-serious manner before the alleged assault.

When the two made their way to the lingerie department, Carroll said the “comedy was escalating” but it never occurred to her that Trump might try to rape her. Trump directed Carroll to try on a sheer grey bodysuit. She playfully suggested that he put it on instead, Carroll said.&nbsp;

Carroll testified that she had no intention of trying on the garment but had instead followed Trump's gesture into the changing room in the hope that it would make for a humorous "Saturday Night Live" sketch.

“I didn’t picture anything about what was about to happen,” she said Wednesday. “That open door has plagued me for years because I just walked into it, walked in.”

Carroll described how, despite her protests, Trump reportedly pushed her up against the wall and ultimately placed his fingers and then his penis into her. She remembered the ache in her vagina and the back of her head.

Carroll, who was getting upset on the witness stand, paused for a long time as her lawyer questioned what she did after Trump reportedly forcibly entered her.

“When you ask me what I did in that moment,” Carroll said as tears brimmed her eyes. “I always think – I always think of why I walked in there to get myself in that situation. But I’m proud to say I did get out, I got my knee up and pushed him back.”

Carroll claimed that the alleged assault by Trump only lasted a few minutes and that her adrenaline kept her from feeling scared.

“This is going to sound strange: I was almost too frightened to think if I was afraid or not, I was stamping (my feet),” she said. “My whole reason for being alive in that moment was to get out of that room.”

“It was very stupid,” Carroll said on the stand, choking up. “It changed – I know people have been through a lot worse than this but it had – it left me – it left me unable to ever have a romantic life again.”

Carroll admitted she didn't seek medical assistance but remembers having discomfort and that it took her some time to settle down that night. &nbsp;

“I was extremely rattled, I didn’t know who I was, I couldn’t believe that it happened, I couldn’t believe that it happened to me,” she said.

Carroll testified that she contacted Lisa Birnbach, the funniest person she knew, as soon as she left the store.&nbsp;“If Lisa thought it was funny then it was not a bad thing and I didn’t completely do a stupid thing.”&nbsp;

According to Carroll's testimony, Birnbach told her that it wasn't funny that Carroll had been raped, and that she should report it to the police.

Carroll, however felt ashamed and the two ultimately decided to never bring it up again.&nbsp;“Because I was flirting with him and laughing, having one of the great times and it was high comedy, it was funny and then to have it turned into that,” Carroll said.

Carroll admitted in court that she is a registered Democrat and that she believes Trump is "evil" and "vile" and was a terrible president. She also insisted that her political opinions had nothing to do with the litigation she is pursuing.

“I’m not settling a political score,” Carroll said. “I’m settling a personal score because he called me a liar repeatedly and it really has decimated my reputation. I’m a journalist – the one thing I have to have is the trust of the readers.”

However, Trump's attorney Joseph Tacopina told the jury of three women and six men that Carroll brought the action for political reasons, to sell a book, and to garner media attention, reported The Guardian.

Tacopina said that the rape accusation was made up&nbsp;by Carroll and two other women who are expected to testify that she told them about the assault immediately&nbsp;afterwards.

“They schemed to hurt Donald Trump politically,” he said.

Tacopina told the jury that Carroll initially accused then-president Trump of rape following a meeting with George Conway, a prominent opponent who was married to Kellyanne Conway, one of the president's closest advisers in the White House. The judge upheld a challenge to Carroll's claim made by his attorneys. When Carroll provides testimony, it's unclear if Tacopina will bring it up again.

Carroll claims that in 1996, after they ran into each other and he asked for help in choosing a gift for a friend, Trump assaulted her in a dressing room of the Bergdorf Goodman department store in New York.

Shawn Crowley, Carroll's attorney, told the jury that Trump forced Carroll into a changing room before attacking her. According to the attorney, Trump slammed Carroll's head against the wall, held her arms behind her back, pulled her tights down, and then pushed his fingers into her vagina.

Crowley claimed that Carroll attempted to knee Trump off and kicked him, but that Trump overpowered&nbsp;her.

“He removed his hand and forced his penis inside her,” the lawyer told the jury.

Crowley addressed the two issues she predicted would be foremost in the jurors' minds. Carroll and Trump entered the dressing room for what reason? And why did she not call the police right away to report the alleged rape?

The attorney claimed that when Carroll was asked to try on a see-through bodysuit by Trump, she threw the suggestion back at him and told him that since it was his colour, he should be the one wearing it. Trump then brought Carroll to the changing room while holding her arm.

“To her, the situation was harmless and funny,” said Crowley. “The truth is she didn’t see Trump as a threat.”

Crowley claimed that following the incident, Carroll did inform two friends. One suggested that she contact the police. The other suggested keeping silent because Trump was an influential person. &nbsp;Carroll, according to Crowley, was "filled with fear and shame" that prevented her from speaking for a long time.

Carroll was subjected to a barrage of "vicious attacks" by the president when she finally made the decision to speak out following Trump's election in 2016 and the rise of the #MeToo movement.

Tacopina argued before the jury that it was impossible that nobody in a major department store noticed Carroll and Trump together and that no employees were present in the vicinity of the alleged assault.&nbsp;

Carroll claimed that the door was unlocked despite Bergdorf Goodman's customary practice of keeping changing rooms shut until a customer requested entry.

Carroll's explanation for why she didn't call the police was contested by Tacopina.

Donald Trump’s ‘grab them by the p***y’ tape to be used in civil rape trial

Donald Trump may soon have another 'title' added to his name, that of a rapist. This week, former advice columnist and author E Jean Carroll will finally get her chance to speak in court about the alleged ordeal she had to bear at the hands of the former US president.

Carroll sued Trump under a recent New York state law that opened a one-year window for adult victims of sexual assault. It allows them to file civil cases after the expiry of the statute of limitations. She alleges that sometime in late 1995 or early 1996, Trump sexually assaulted her in a New York department store.

As per the Guardian, jury selection for the case is set to begin in a Manhattan court on Tuesday.

The former columnist claims that Trump raped her in the dressing room of Bergdorf Goodman, a New York department store. She claims that she was shopping in the store when Trump recognised her and asked her for help in choosing a present for a woman.

The businessman then led her to the lingerie section, where he "grabbed up from the counter a little see-through bodysuit and told me to go try it on," said Carroll.&nbsp;

"And that’s where I got into trouble, because we went into the dressing room and he closed the door and that was it."

As per the lawsuit, Trump initially pinned Carroll against the wall and forcibly kissed her, but "then he pressed her against the wall once more, pulled down her tights, and forcibly raped her for several minutes until she managed to push him off and fled the store."

Carroll claims that following the ordeal she did not file a police complaint because she "was in shock and did not wish to think of herself as a rape victim."

However, in the following days, she confided in two friends: Lisa Birnbach and Carol Martin. Both of them have corroborated Carroll's account and will do so when they testify during the trial.

As per the complaint, Carroll chose to forego going to the police because one of her friends "stressed that Mr Trump was powerful and would ‘bury’ Ms Carroll if she came forward."

However, when the businessman was elected President and the #MeToo movement gained traction, she chose to break her silence. She even wrote a book, 'What Do We Need Men For? A Modest Proposal,' detailing different kinds of abuses by a number of men, including Trump.

In 2019, she also filed a defamation case against Trump denying her accusations, saying she was lying and was only trying to sell her book that should "should be sold in the fiction section."

Trump, however, denies the allegations and claims he has never met the author, although a picture of them along with their spouses exists.

A man charged with participation in the January 6 storming of Capitol Hill opened fire on cops sent to check on him. As per a news release by the US Department of Justice, on April 12th, the man, Nathan Donald Pelham, 40, of Greenville, Texas allegedly "fired several shots towards law enforcement days before his first court appearance" and has now been also charged with a federal firearm crime.

He has been charged with a criminal complaint for being a felon in possession of a firearm.&nbsp;

The fresh charge comes just days after he was on April 11 charged with four misdemeanour counts stemming from his alleged participation in the January 6th breach of the US Capitol building.&nbsp;

He was given until April 17th to surrender. Soon after, as per Raw Story, a relative of Pelham called the police with information about a gun in the felon's possession.

When police conducted a welfare check, Pelham shot at them. Reportedly, the standoff between Pelham and the police lasted for nearly three hours.

"At approximately 9:38 p.m., Mr. Pelham – a previously convicted felon – walked onto the porch and allegedly fired towards several deputies, who could be heard on body-worn camera video noting bullets ‘whiz’ by them," said the DOJ in a statement published on its website.

"A deputy instructed Mr. Pelham to put his gun down, but he continued to wave it until re-entering his home. At 10:46 pm, Mr. Pelham again exited the residence and fired multiple rounds."

No one was injured in the standoff. A later search of the Pelham residence revealed "a Smith &amp; Wesson 9mm pistol and four boxes of ammunition, as well as several 9mm sized holes in the walls."&nbsp;On Wednesday, April 19 the felon made his initial appearance before US Magistrate Judge Toliver. &nbsp;

Fox News dodged the possibility of a humiliating defamation trial, following a last-minute settlement on Tuesday (April 18),&nbsp;but it also suffered a major blow to its reputation.&nbsp;The network, one of the most influential and successful in the US, agreed to a $787.5 million settlement in a lawsuit brought by voting technology manufacturer Dominion for its reporting on false election fraud charges in the 2020 election.

Analysts said the settlement was a rare example that there may be an enormous price for blatant disinformation — even for once-untouchable media giants. Fox News managed to wriggle out of what was anticipated to be a dramatic trial.

"This can be seen as a wake-up call for live broadcasters and a reminder that there really is a difference between false factual statements, and knowingly broadcasting such false information, and protected speech," Roy Gutterman, a Syracuse University professor, told AFP.

<h2>Why did Dominion sue Fox News?</h2>

In its $1.6 billion lawsuit against Fox News, Dominion claimed that the network had supported Donald Trump's baseless assertion that the company's voting equipment had been tampered with, to rig the 2020 election in Joe Biden's favour.

"The evidence will show that Dominion was a valuable, rapidly growing business that was executing on its plan to expand prior to the time that Fox began endorsing baseless lies about Dominion voting machines," said a Dominion spokesperson in a statement, as reported by NPR.&nbsp;

"Following Fox's defamatory statements, Dominion's business suffered enormously, and its claim for compensatory damages is based on industry-standard valuation metrics and conservative methodologies. We look forward to proving this aspect of our case at trial," added the spokesperson.

The company claimed that because of baseless rumours that Dominion's voting machines altered votes for then-President Donald Trump to his opponent, Joe Biden, in the 2020 election, its staff and offices have endured years of fatal threats.

Rupert Murdoch, the chairman of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/fox-news-reportedly-trying-to-settle-with-dominion-amid-delay-in-defamation-trial-583391">Fox Corporation</a>, and hosts like Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson will no longer&nbsp;have to testify as a result of the settlement.

"A loss -- and the trial process itself -- would have been much worse for&nbsp;Fox," John Culhane, a professor at Delaware Law School at Widener University, told AFP.

"They were staring down the prospect of a parade of high-profile witnesses having to try to defend their disinformation machinery to a jury. The audio would have been replayed a thousand times, forever," he added.&nbsp;

<h2>Fox News' image tarnished?</h2>

Numerous internal documents from Fox News, including emails and texts, were made public by Dominion, revealing that its executives questioned Trump's assertions and even voiced contempt for the former president despite adoring him on screen.

"The stain this leaves on&nbsp;Fox&nbsp;can't be wiped out with money," said Angelo Carusone, president of the advocacy group Media Matters, who spoke to AFP.

"The network has been completely exposed as a partisan propaganda outlet that is willing to do anything for profit and power," he added.&nbsp;

According to US media, the broadcaster will not be required to apologise or acknowledge that it disseminated false information on network programming under the terms of the settlement.

But, the bigger question looms.&nbsp;Will the hefty settlement be enough to deter Fox network from doing the same in the future?&nbsp;

"Will&nbsp;Fox's disinformation engine be chastened? I doubt it," Gregory Miller, the co-founder of the nonpartisan, nonprofit OSET Institute, told AFP.

"It may bring about some cooling off, but I fear it will be in full gear," in the lead up to the 2024 presidential election, he added.&nbsp;

Experts anticipate a fiercely polarised election in 2024.&nbsp;

Trump is running for president for a third time and continues to be the front-runner for the Republican nomination after making the false allegation that the previous election had been rigged against him, which provoked a violent mob to attack the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.

<h2 id="main-heading" tabindex="-1">Can Fox News&nbsp;afford the $787.5mn Dominion settlement?</h2>

The Rupert Murdoch-owned network has agreed to pay Dominion $787.5 million.&nbsp;Although this&nbsp;will be a substantial&nbsp;compensation, Fox has escaped&nbsp;what some have called the "defamation trial of the century."

At almost $800m, it is one of the biggest ever financial settlements in a defamation case.&nbsp;However, it is less than half the $1.6bn ask initially put forward&nbsp;by Dominion.

Additionally, it has a significant cash reserve of $4 billion, as per recent company filings.

According to Forbes magazine, Rupert Murdoch and his family are estimated to be worth $17.6 billion. They are in charge of the News Corp media empire, which includes Fox News, The Times of London, and The Wall Street Journal.

Fox, however, won't be able to put the problems with its coverage of the 2020 presidential election behind them just yet.

Another electoral technology company, Smartmatic, has filed a second, similar defamation action against it and is seeking $2.7 billion.&nbsp;The $787.5 million payoff to&nbsp;Dominion might only be the&nbsp;the tip of the iceberg for Fox News.&nbsp;

The company claimed that because of baseless rumours that Dominion's voting machines altered votes for then-President Donald Trump to his opponent, Joe Biden, in the 2020 election, its staff and offices have endured years of fatal threats. Rupert Murdoch, the chairman of Fox Corporation, and hosts like Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson will no longer have to testify as a result of the settlement. "A loss -- and the trial process itself -- would have been much worse for Fox," John Culhane, a professor at Delaware Law School at Widener University, told AFP. "They were staring down the prospect of a parade of high-profile witnesses having to try to defend their disinformation machinery to a jury. The audio would have been replayed a thousand times, forever," he added. Fox News' image tarnished? Numerous internal documents from Fox News, including emails and texts, were made public by Dominion, revealing that its executives questioned Trump's assertions and even voiced contempt for the former president despite adoring him on screen. "The stain this leaves on Fox can't be wiped out with money," said Angelo Carusone, president of the advocacy group Media Matters, who spoke to AFP. "The network has been completely exposed as a partisan propaganda outlet that is willing to do anything for profit and power," he added. But, the bigger question looms. Will the hefty settlement be enough to deter Fox network from doing the same in the future? "Will Fox's disinformation engine be chastened? I doubt it," Gregory Miller, the co-founder of the nonpartisan, nonprofit OSET Institute, told AFP. "It may bring about some cooling off, but I fear it will be in full gear," in the lead up to the 2024 presidential election, he added. Experts anticipate a fiercely polarised election in 2024. Trump is running for president for a third time and continues to be the front-runner for the Republican nomination after making the false allegation that the previous election had been rigged against him, which provoked a violent mob to attack the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. Can Fox News afford the $787.5mn Dominion settlement? The Rupert Murdoch-owned network has agreed to pay Dominion $787.5 million. Although this will be a substantial compensation, Fox has escaped what some have called the "defamation trial of the century." At almost $800m, it is one of the biggest ever financial settlements in a defamation case. However, it is less than half the $1.6bn ask initially put forward by Dominion. Additionally, it has a significant cash reserve of $4 billion, as per recent company filings. According to Forbes magazine, Rupert Murdoch and his family are estimated to be worth $17.6 billion. They are in charge of the News Corp media empire, which includes Fox News, The Times of London, and The Wall Street Journal. Fox, however, won't be able to put the problems with its coverage of the 2020 presidential election behind them just yet. Another electoral technology company, Smartmatic, has filed a second, similar defamation action against it and is seeking $2.7 billion.
