The Disney controversy has earned him points in the conservative circles and he is now doubling down on the issue to go for the jugular. However, Disney cancelling the $1 billion investment in Florida may have thrown a monkey wrench in DeSantis' plans. In order to bring his campaign back on track, election experts believe that DeSantis will have to either win in Iowa or New Hampshire. Though a win may not be enough to win a nomination, it is necessary to take the fight to the last day of primaries. The likes of Barack Obama and John McCain, who polled in the low 20s in the nomination race, managed to make a comeback after winning Iowa and New Hampshire respectively, back in the day. Many within the GOP, in hushed voices, say they are not confident that Trump is the right person to usher in the new Republican era. According to a report by The Independent on Monday (May 22), the lawsuit filed in Florida's Sarasota County claimed that a May 13 report alleging the company might have committed securities fraud was false and defamatory, and posed an “existential threat”. The article titled- "Trust linked to porn-friendly bank could gain a stake in Trump’s Truth Social” alleged the company concealed key details about a proposed merger from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and shareholders, citing internal documents given by a whistleblower. According to the lawsuit, the Washington Post was on a years-long crusade to undermine Trump Media. The lawsuit claimed that the clickbait headline of the report "immediately grabbed the common mind of readers, falsely insinuating that TMTG ( Trump Media & Technology Group) was involved in shady business dealings.” What does the WaPo report say? The Washington Post report has cast aspersions on Trump Media's business practices, saying the company failed to disclose investments to the SEC multiple times. “[TMTG] borrowed money from a bank best known for servicing adult entertainment, pledged a stake in the company for the loan and didn’t tell the SEC,” the WaPo report said. The source of the report was Will Wilkerson, a former employee of Trump media. "WaPo has been on a years-long crusade against TMTG characterized by the concealment of relevant information in its possession—a bitterly ironic truth for a publication whose motto is ‘Democracy Dies in Darkness,’" the court filing said and pointed out that Wilkerson knew that Washington Post published fake stories about TMTG, its CEO, Devin Nunes and Donald Trump, Fox News reported. "Wilkerson contacted WaPo with a salacious story about a porn-friendly bank and securities fraud. Through a series of meetings and conversations with Wilkerson and his lawyers, WaPo undertook with Wilkerson to publish agreed false and defamatory statements to injure TMTG," the court filing added. Jean Carroll has requested a US court judge to amend her initial defamation case in which she received $5 million in damages, to include Donald Trump's recent statements at a CNN town hall. The former president repeated his claims at the interview which Carroll believes was another attempt at defaming her. According to Carroll's attorney, Trump's statements directly go to the issue of punitive damages which are intended to punish the person found liable. Notably, a day after a nine-member jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming the Elle magazine writer, he called her a 'whack job' on CNN. He added that Carroll was telling a "made-up story" and that he didn't know her, which according to Carroll's lawyers, comes under the category of further "defamatory statements". "Trump’s defamatory statements post-verdict show the depth of his malice toward Carroll since it is hard to imagine defamatory conduct that could possibly be more motivated by hatred, ill will, or spite," the complaint reads. "This conduct supports a very substantial punitive damages award in Carroll’s favor both to punish Trump, to deter him from engaging in further defamation, and to deter others from doing the same," it added. The Manhattan Federal Court earlier this month announced the verdict and awarded $5 million in compensatory and punitive damages to Carroll. The nine-member jury, comprising six men and three women, reached a unanimous verdict in less than three hours but did not agree with Carroll’s allegation that the former president raped her. The comments were made by Amanpour on Wednesday while she was giving the commencement address at Columbia Journalism School in New York, as reported by Variety and other media outlets. 
 
“We know Trump and his tendencies – everyone does. He just seizes the stage and dominates. No matter how much flak the moderator tries to aim at the incoming, it doesn’t often work. I would have dropped the mic at ‘nasty person’, but then that’s me,” she said.

During the town hall, CNN moderator, Kaitlan Collins was called a “nasty person” by Trump, which prompted applause from the Republican supporters present in the audience in one of many raucous moments. 
 
However, Licht stood by the decision of broadcasting the town hall as he said to the staff it will remind viewers what was at stake in the 2024 presidential election. 
 
Speaking to aspiring journalists, Amanpour said, “I still respectfully disagree with allowing Donald Trump to appear in that particular format.”

She further hoped CNN can rebuild trust with audiences in the near future. 
 
“I can only hope that your trust in us might have been shaken but not shattered. That you believe we can survive and rebuild that trust,” said Amanpour. 
 
Amanpour has emerged as the first CNN anchor who has publicly expressed her disagreement with the decision to host Trump, however, other employees have also criticised the broadcast. 
 
Reporter Oliver Darcy also had issued a statement against his employer in his Reliable Sources newsletter. “It’s hard to see how America was served by the spectacle of lies that aired on CNN Wednesday evening,” wrote Darcy. As per reports, Darcy was rebuked by Licht.

CNN host Christiane Amanpour criticises network for hosting Donald Trump town hall

Republican South Carolina Senator Tim Scott officially entered the 2024 presidential race on Friday after he filed for his paperwork.

Scott is expected to make an announcement on Monday in his hometown in North Charleston.

"American families are starving for hope. We need to have faith. Faith in God, faith in each other, and faith in America," Scott tweeted on Thursday.

CNN, quoting sources, has reported that Scott might name his longtime aide former chief of staff Jennifer DeCasper as his campaign manager. If this happens, she would be the first Black woman to lead a Republican presidential campaign.

Scott is the lone Black Republican in the Senate. He is vying to become the second Black president after Barack Obama created history in 2008.

According to the lawsuit, Giuliani, 78, often demanded oral sex while he was on phone calls on speaker from high-profile friends and clients, including Donald Trump. The lawsuit also alleged that Giuliani forced Dunphy into giving him oral sex "against her will" at his apartment.

The ex-New York City mayor "often demanded that she (Dunphy) work naked, in a bikini, or in short shorts with an American flag on them that he bought for her."

The lawsuit further mentioned that Guiliani often video-called Dunphy from his bed, "where he was visibly touching himself under a white sheet." The woman also claimed Giuliani said her pay "would have to be deferred and her employment kept 'secret'" until his divorce proceedings finished.

In a statement sent to the American media, a spokesperson for Giuliani said that the ex-mayor vehemently and completely denied the allegations in the complaint and planned to thoroughly defend against these allegations, the news agency AFP reported.&nbsp;

"This is pure harassment and an attempt at extortion," the spokesperson said.

On Thursday midnight, the Trump-era&nbsp;‘Title 42’ rule—imposed during the pandemic to expel those entering the country unlawfully—expired, paving the way for more tougher regulations to take effect.

Hours before, thousands of immigrants rushed to the US-Mexico in a desperate attempt to seek asylum even as additional troops were deployed to the border to tackle the influx.

“Starting tonight, people who arrive at the border without using a lawful pathway will be presumed ineligible for asylum. We are ready to humanely process and remove people without a legal basis to remain in the US," Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro&nbsp;Mayorkas&nbsp;said in a statement.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"The border is not open," he added. "People who do not use available lawful pathways to enter the US&nbsp;now face tougher consequence."

It is uncertain how many are looking to cross the border, but border patrol officers peg the number anywhere upwards of 60,000.

Speaking to CBS News, Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz said his agency is preparing for some of the tens of thousands of migrants currently on the Mexican side of the US-Mexico border once Title 42 expires&nbsp;on Thursday at 11.59 pm ET (local time)

"Upwards of 60,000 migrants we project are staging in and around the immediate border area," Ortiz told CBS News in El Paso.

"So, we're focused on ensuring that we're doing everything we can to allocate resources to address those flows."

Title 42 was imposed in March 2020, in which many border crossers were expelled to Mexico without a chance to seek asylum, leading to repeat attempts.

President Joe Biden, after assuming office, continued with the policy, but faced massive criticism from all corners, following which he decided to end the rule and came up with more stringent regulations that seek to curb illegal crossovers. The rule was first announced in February.

The new regulation, which will come into effect once Title 42 is lifted, will deny asylum to almost all migrants who cross illegally. They will not only be allowed to return for five years, but also can face criminal prosecution if they try to.

Moreover, it will bar anyone who has passed through another country without seeking refuge elsewhere or who failed to use legal pathways to enter the United States.

In 2019, Donald Trump looked to impose similar but stricter measures, but a federal appeals court prevented it from taking effect.

More personnel deployed to border

According to local news reports, around 24,000 enforcement officers are guarding the 1,951-mile (3,140-kilometer) border with Mexico. Moreover, at least 1,500 active-duty military troops are being deployed to back up US Customs and Border Protection. And 2,500 National Guard troops are already there, tasked to help out CBP.

On Tuesday, Biden said that his administration was working to make the change orderly. "But it remains to be seen," he told reporters. "It's going to be chaotic for a while."

Meanwhile, her lawyer, Roberta Kaplan told the newspaper, that “we have to give serious consideration to it,” referring to the possibility of a defamation lawsuit. “We have to weigh the various pros and cons and we’ll come to a decision in the next day or so, probably,” Kaplan told the Times.&nbsp;
