Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) officials have admitted they were 'surprised' at how the gunman, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, managed to take multiple shots at Donald Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday (Jul 13), even as Secret Service guarded the former president.

Addressing a press conference after the attack, FBI and Pennsylvania State Police officials looked fidgety as they deferred several questions about the efficiency of the US Secret Service - who were notably missing from the gathering.

“It is surprising but, to get all the details of that will come out later in the investigation," said Kevin Rojek, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Pittsburgh field office when quizzed he was surprised at the number of shots.

"The Secret Service really needs to answer that question,” Rojek stated, adding that the FBI was only there to support the Secret Service who were in charge of securing the scene.

While the FBI seemingly threw the Secret Service under the bus Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens came to their rescue.

“In their defence, what I would want to say is it is incredibly difficult to have a venue open to the public and secure that against any possible threat against a determined attacker, that’s a huge lift to try and do it,” Bivens told reporters.

George Clooney may have been a Democratic party loyalist for years, but he is convinced that the incumbent United States President Joe Biden 'cannot win' the presidential election in November. Clooney has urged the Democrats to look for a new candidate in a bombshell op-ed he has written for the New York Times which was published on Wednesday (Jul 10). The Oscar-winning actor-filmmaker has said that Biden is no longer the same person he once was.

In his guest piece, the 63-year-old revealed how he has been one of the biggest fundraisers for the Democratic party. “I have led some of the biggest fund-raisers in my party’s history. Barack Obama in 2012. Hillary Clinton in 2016. Joe Biden in 2020. Last month I co-hosted the single largest fund-raiser supporting any Democratic candidate ever, for President Biden’s re-election.”

The actor clarified that he mentioned his involvement in fundraisers to highlight the gravity of the situation and his dedication to the party.

“I say all of this only to express how much I believe in this process and how profound I think this moment is,” he wrote. Calling himself a “lifelong Democrat,” Clooney admitted that Biden, 81, should not seek reelection.

Clooney blamed Biden's age for the change. “This is about age. Nothing more.”

“But also nothing that can be reversed. We are not going to win in November with this president.” The actor also added that it was not only his opinion but the opinion of every Democrat.

“On top of that, we won’t win the House, and we’re going to lose the Senate. This isn’t only my opinion; this is the opinion of every senator and congress member and governor that I’ve spoken with in private. Every single one, irrespective of what he or she is saying publicly,” Clooney wrote.

The United States Supreme Court on Monday (July 1) ruled that former US President Donald Trump is partially immune to federal criminal charges involving his alleged efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss. The court ruled that the ex-US president is immune to official conduct, and not private actions.

The court held that a former president "is entitled to at least presumptive immunity from prosecution for all his official acts. There is no immunity for unofficial acts."

The decision would allow proceedings to resume in one of the most serious criminal cases against Trump, the Republican nominee in the 2024 presidential vote, who is charged in federal court with seeking to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Hillary Clinton, former US Secretary of State, said that President Joe Biden is starting from a "disadvantage" against former president Donald Trump during the first 2024 presidential debate on Thursday. In an op-ed published in The New York Times on Monday, Clinton also said she has low expectations for Trump's performance.

CNN is hosting Biden and Trump for their first debate of the 2024 campaign in Atlanta as the stage is set for what could be a pivotal moment in the 2024 presidential race.

Notably, Clinton has debated both Trump and Biden. In 2016, she debated Trump while unsuccessfully running for the White House. She had debated Biden during a presidential primary eight years earlier.

It would be a "waste of time" for Biden to attempt to refute Trump's contentions in the debate because "it's nearly impossible to identify what his arguments even are", she said, further adding that Trump "starts with nonsense and then digresses into blather" and this has "gotten only worse in the years since we debated".

Clinton accused Trump of wanting to "rant and rave in part because he wants to avoid giving straight answers about his unpopular positions, like restrictions on abortion, giving tax breaks to billionaires and selling out our planet to big oil companies in return for campaign donations."

Hillary Clinton says Joe Biden starting from 'disadvantage' in debate against Donald Trump

Former US president and White House hopeful Donald Trump will on Monday (June 10) have a virtual interview with an official from the New York City Probation Department.

The interview follows a verdict that found him guilty of covering up a hush money payment and is part of preparing the sentencing recommendation that would be forwarded to the judge.

Virtual interview

As per a CBS News report, Trump, who happens to be the first former president to be criminally convicted, will appear from Mar-a-Lago. His lawyer Todd Blanche, as per the report citing a source with the knowledge of the matter, will appear alongside him.

NBC News, citing a former commissioner for the New York City Department of Correction and Probation, reports that it was not normal for a probation interview to happen virtually.

"It is highly unusual for a pre-sentence investigation interview to be done over Zoom," said Martin Horn, adding that Trump visiting the courthouse in downtown Manhattan would be "very disruptive" to other court business. Given the presence of the Secret Service and media, he said it could be unfair to other defendants who might not want to be identified.

"So in the end, this might be better for the probation officer," he added.

The presence of Trump's lawyer Blanche is also a move away from the normal. As per the Associated Press, convicts in the New York Court system do not usually have their lawyers present for probation interviews.

What is a pre-sentencing report?

Pre-sentencing reports include information on an offender's personal life, criminal history, financial means, health condition and general living situation. This is the information that gives guidelines to the judge regarding what punishment may be awarded to the criminal. The interview, as per BBC, often allows the convict to seek leniency in terms of the sentence.

Trump, who was found guilty on May 30, will be sentenced on July 11. He will face a maximum sentence of four years, although convictions typically result in shorter sentences.

A trade association in Los Angeles has decided to not give out a planned award to veteran actor Robert De Niro following his comments on former US president Donald Trump over his criminal trial.

De Niro, whose last big screen release was "Killers of the Flower Moon", was scheduled to accept a leadership award from the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) next week in Washington, DC.

A spokesperson for the broadcasters association told American newspaper The Hill that the event was "proudly bipartisan".

“While we strongly support the right of every American to exercise free speech and participate in civic engagement, it is clear that Mr De Niro’s recent high-profile activities will create a distraction from the philanthropic work that we were hoping to recognize. To maintain the focus on service of the award winners, Mr De Niro will no longer be attending the event,” the statement read.

De Niro has been a vocal critic of Trump through the years. Following the development, the actor wished the association well.

Trade association cancels its award to Robert De Niro following comments against Donald Trump

The Republican National Committee’s headquarters in Washington, United States was briefly evacuated and put on lockdown, on Wednesday (May 22) morning after it received two vials of blood after former US President Donald Trump took over the national party apparatus in March. The Associated Press citing sources said that the vials had been addressed to the presumptive presidential nominee.

What we know about the incident

A report by the Guardian citing eyewitnesses said that several hazmat trucks that are equipped with tools to handle hazardous materials were seen outside the RNC building which is near the US Capitol at around 8:00 am (local time).

The RNC office received a package containing two vials of blood, a Chinese philosophy text, and two ice packs and they are currently investigating the source of the package, said the Capitol Police spokeswoman Brianna Burch.

Earlier on Wednesday, Burch had incorrectly described the text that was in the package as a “Korean bible.” It was also unclear if anyone came into contact with the blood and to whom it belonged.

A report by AP citing an anonymous source said that the vials were addressed to Trump.

As the US is moving towards a possible ban on TikTok in the country, former president Donald Trump has now opposed it, saying such a step will only empower Facebook which in his view is the "enemy of the people".

He also noted that lots of kids 'will go crazy' without the Chinese-owned video sharing platform which is being seen as a national security threat for US due to alleged links to the Communist Party as well as concerns over user data sharing and privacy.

Trump, who himself in 2020 tried to ban TikTok, said that if the proposal is implemented, it will give unfair advantages to Facebook owner Meta.

"There's a lot of good and there's a lot of bad with TikTok, but the thing I don't like is that without TikTok, you're going to make Facebook bigger, and I consider Facebook to be an enemy of the people, along with a lot of the media," said Trump, while speaking to CNBC about the controversial app.

Trump's TikTok U-turn: Says some kids will 'go crazy without it', Facebook 'enemy of the people'

Ex-Donald Trump adviser Peter Navarro has been ordered to report to prison this month, his lawyers said in a court filing, which could make him the first senior member of the former president's administration to do so for efforts to overturn his 2020 defeat.

Navarro, who served as Trump's trade adviser, is due on March 19 to begin his four-month sentence for defying a subpoena from the U.S. House of Representatives committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack, his lawyers revealed in a court filing late on Sunday.

They are asking a federal appeals court in Washington to pause the sentence while Navarro appeals his conviction. His defence team indicated they would ask the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene if his request is denied.

Navarro, 74, was found guilty of contempt of Congress last September for refusing to turn over documents or sit for an interview with the Democratic-led House committee that investigated the Capitol riot, a failed attempt by Trump supporters to overturn Trump’s defeat in the 2020 election. He was sentenced in January.

Navarro, a China hawk who also advised Trump on the response to the COVID pandemic, has claimed Trump invoked the legal doctrine of executive privilege, which shields some presidential records and communications from disclosure.

A federal judge found that Trump had not formerly invoked the privilege.

Steve Bannon, a onetime top strategist to Trump, was also sentenced to four months in prison for defying a subpoena from the Jan. 6 panel, but a judge has allowed him to remain free while he appeals.

Donald Trump on Monday pledged to free people jailed for taking part in the 2021 attack on the US Capitol as one of his first actions if reelected, calling them "hostages."

The rioters — egged on by the then-president and fuelled by his false claims of voter fraud — stormed the seat of US democracy on January 6, 2021, in a bid to halt the transfer of power to Joe Biden.

Around 1,358 defendants have been charged in the 38 months since then, according to the latest figures from the Justice Department released last week. About 500 have been sentenced to prison terms.

Trump posted the comments on his Truth Social website, additionally promising to shut down the border with Mexico as part of his first acts, if reelected, without providing details.

"My first acts as your next President will be to Close the Border, DRILL, BABY, DRILL, and Free the January 6 Hostages being wrongfully imprisoned!" he wrote late Monday.

In January, he implored President Biden to "release the J6 hostages, Joe" during a campaign rally in Iowa.

Trump faces four criminal indictments, including two -- one federal and one in Georgia, — stemming from his attempts to overturn the election results after losing to Biden.

Former US president Donald Trump emerged victorious in the South Carolina primary on Saturday (Feb 24), defeating Nikki Haley in her home state in the nomination race, according to media projections. Seconds after the final ballot was cast, CNN, NBC and other outlets predicted another stinging loss for Haley who is yet to drop out of the nomination race, despite facing defeats in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada previously. Reports showed Trump had garnered as much as 58.5 per cent votes, compared to Haley's 41 per cent in the voting which provides him 29 delegates from the state. "It's an early evening and a fantastic evening. We can celebrate for about 15 minutes and then we have to get back to work," Trump told a room of boisterous supporters after the win. "There's never been a spirit like this. This was a little sooner than we anticipated, and an even bigger win than we anticipated." The Republican leader added that he will be ready on November 5 to look "Joe Biden right in the eye and say, 'Joe, you are fired, get out Joe, you are fired'." Watch: 'A vote for Nikki Haley is a vote for Joe Biden': Trump in South Carolina Haley's painful campaign Despite the loss, the Haley camp is looking forward to Super Tuesday, which falls on March 5 this year and refers to the date when the most number of US states hold primaries and caucuses. “Haley has been the underdog in this race the entire time. We know that Trump is a juggernaut. We know that he is strong. We know that he has been the de facto leader of the party for the past eight years. So, breaking that hold is going to take a lot," said Haley’s campaign manager Betsy Ankney. However, the defeat leaves big question mark over her campaign which is yet to taste any victory so far. Haley's insistence on remaining in the race has irked the Trump camp which has accused her of relying on wealthy donors from the opposition political spectrum to merely prolong the inevitable. The 52-year-old former UN ambassador has underscored her doggedness to remain in the race as she brings limited government and a muscular foreign policy to the table. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis may have received a reprieve after the county's special prosecutor Nathan Wade, whom she had appointed to lead the election interference case against former president Donald Trump in Georgia, settled a divorce case with his estranged wife Jocelyn Wade. The settlement comes a day before the scheduled hearing in the divorce case where Wade was expected to be asked about his alleged affair with Willis, his boss, that could have weakened the case against Trump. Notably, one of Trump's co-defendants in the case, Michael Roman, had filed the motion last week, seeking to disqualify Willis' office and have the case dismissed altogether. Trump has alleged that the affair amounted to a conflict of interest. By entering into a temporary divorce agreement, Wade will have to no longer answer questions about whether he used the money earned in the case to take Willis on lavish vacations. Notably, bank statements filed in the divorce case by Wade's wife showed that the special prosecutor purchased tickets on two separate occasions for himself and Willis during the time of Trump's investigation. Wade was a lawyer in private practice when Willis hired him in 2021 to help run the Trump case as she needed a 'trusted confidant' for the job. Watch | Donald Trump's Georgia trial could drag on till 2025 × What is the Georgia case? The case stems from a Jan 2, 2021, phone call in which Trump urged Georgia's top election official, Brad Raffensperger, to "find" enough votes to reverse his narrow loss in the state, but the request was declined. Reports have mentioned that Willis also investigated an alleged scheme by the Trump campaign to subvert the US electoral process by submitting false slates of electors, people who make up the Electoral College that elects the president and vice president. Also read | Explained | Why is Donald Trump's Georgia indictment different? The former president has pleaded not guilty to all 13 charges against him in the sprawling 41-count racketeering indictment brought by the district attorney's office against Trump and 18 others in August. The Georgia case is important as it can not be dismissed through a presidential pardon. Only federal matters can be swept under the carpet but since it is a state case, even if Trump becomes the president later this year, the case will not be shelved. (With inputs from agencies)

Seeking presidential nomination, Donald Trump has once again refused to spell out explicitly if he would help Taiwan in the event China decides to invade the island nation. The former US president in an interview with Fox News was quizzed if, under a hypothetical second Trump presidency, Washington would stand up for Taiwan and protect it when the inadvertent incursion from China comes.

Instead of giving a firm answer, Trump showed discontent with Taiwan for taking the lucrative semiconductor business away from the US.

"Taiwan did take all of our chip business. We used to make all of our own chips, now they're made in Taiwan, 90 per cent of [them]...Remember this, Taiwan took, smart, brilliant, they took our business away," said Trump.

Netizens interpreted Trump's statement as an indication that he would not come to Taiwan's aid if the situation became worrisome.

"If Trump is elected, Taiwan is gone and so is a significant chunk of our semiconductor capacity. Not only is Trump unfit for the office, he's just plain wrong on so many things like this," said one user.

Another added: "Trump clearly has made bed with China on the Taiwan issue. Surprising that out of all candidates, he refused to have Taiwan in his corner."

Judge orders former US president Trump to pay USD 400,000 to New York Times

A US federal appeals court on Friday (Dec 1) stated that former president Donald Trump can be sued over the events of January 6, 2021, that led to the attack on the US Capitol with his supporters attempting to overturn the election.

A US federal appeals court on Friday (Dec 1) stated that former president Donald Trump can be sued over the events of January 6, 2021, that led to the attack on the US Capitol with his supporters attempting to overturn the election. According to Chief Judge Sri Srinivasan who wrote the opinion, everything a president does or says while in office is not protected under presidential immunity. The judge cited several examples where Trump or, for that matter, any president was not protected from liability. "It is not that President Trump could not establish his entitlement to immunity...it is that he has not done so," read the ruling. The three-judge panel of the US Court of Appeals in Washington observed that when a first-term president seeks a second term, his re-election campaign is not an official presidential act. "When a sitting president running for a second term... speaks at a campaign rally funded and organised by his re-election campaign committee, he is not carrying out the official duties of the presidency. He is acting as office-seeker, not office-holder," it added. The opinion concluded that when the 'president' acts outside the functions of the office, he does not continue to enjoy immunity. "When he acts in an unofficial, private capacity, he is subject to civil suits like any private citizen.” Watch | Capitol Hill Riots probe: No end to Trump's troubles; Jan 6 panel releases witness testimony Ramifications for Trump? The decision by the court allows three lawsuits against Trump, brought by the Capitol Police officers and members of Congress to go through. Half a dozen other lawsuits previously filed against Trump might also emerge from dormancy. The decision could have significant ramifications as Trump prepares for the 2024 presidential elections. He already is facing a barrage of other court cases but being tried for the insurrection attempts could have the worst possible effect on his campaign. Last year, a US Congressional panel report held Trump responsible for the January 6 riots. The committee called for Trump to never be allowed to hold office again. To substantiate the claims, the report cited at least 200 acts where Trump and his allies attempted to overturn the presidential election. The 800-page report was published after conducting 1,000-plus interviews and examination of a large number of documents, phone records, texts and more. (With inputs from agencies)

Former United States president Donald Trump on Monday (Nov 6) testified in a New York court in the civil fraud trial that threatens to cripple his real estate empire - The Trump Organization. According to a report by the news agency AFP, Trump, 77, was sworn in shortly after 10:00 am (1500 GMT) to testify in the Manhattan courtroom before Judge Arthur Engoron.

Trump and his two adult sons, Donald Jr and Eric, and other Trump Organization executives are accused of exaggerating the value of their real estate assets by billions of dollars to obtain more favourable bank loans and insurance terms.

In the courtroom, Trump dismissed the allegations that his company's statements of financial condition were fraudulent, adding the value of the "Trump brand" was also not taken into account.

"I became president because of my brand," he said under questioning from Kevin Wallace, a lawyer for New York Attorney General Letitia James's office which filed the case.

AFP reported Judge Engoron complained that Trump's responses were too long to what were "yes" or "no" questions. "Please, just answer the questions, no speeches," Engoron said, adding that this was not a political rally.

New York Attorney General Letitia James, who filed the case, is seeking $250 million in fines.

Ex-US president Donald Trump testifies in civil fraud trial

As the political discourse within the United States gradually but surely moves towards US Presidential election 2024, a poll has revealed that US citizen consider both, US President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump 'too old' for re-election. However, the survey has revealed that people are more focused on Biden's age. He will be 82 on assuming office for a second term, if he gets re-elected. Trump is not far behind, he is 77 years old now and would be closer to his 80s if he gets re-elected.

The survey was conducted by ABC News/ Washington Post in September. 74 per cent of the respondents reportedly said that Biden was too old, while 50 per cent of the respondents felt the same about Trump. There was an uptick of 6 per cent in people who consider Biden too old as compared to a poll conducted in May this year.

While Biden acknowledges the age factor and the discussions, he stresses that he is fit.

Watch | US leaders caught in string of gaffes; Republicans question Biden mental acuity × "I feel good. Trump too old for re-election, but Biden more so: US poll

Donald Trump may be the next speaker of the US House of Representatives if a Texas Republican gets his way.

This comes after, the Republican Party recently succeeded in its unprecedented removal of one of its own, Kevin McCarthy from the post.

Trump for speaker

Calling Trump the "greatest president" of his lifetime, Republican Troy Nehls, as per Guardian, announced that he will be nominating the ex-president for speaker of the US House of Representatives.

"This week, when the US House of Representatives reconvenes, my first order of business will be to nominate Donald J Trump for speaker of the US House of Representatives," he said.

Reportedly, previously too, Trump's name has been suggested for the esteemed post. This includes during the 15-vote marathon that saw McCarthy assume the post in January.

As per Guardian, another congressman, Greg Steube of Florida, said that he would back Trump's nomination for speaker.

Speaker or President?

Fox News host Sean Hannity, on Tuesday, disclosed that "some House Republicans" had "been in contact with and have started an effort to draft" Trump as the US House of Representatives speaker.

Hannity, who has long been close to Trump, also said that the ex-president wasn't interested in the post. Nevertheless, he added that Trump, even as he ran for President, "might be open to helping the Republican Party, at least in the short term, if necessary."

Donald Trump is currently the clear frontrunner for the Republican Party in the 2024 US Presidential elections. However, the leader is haunted by a slew of 91 criminal charges: these include election subversion, retention of classified information and hush-money payments. Donald Trump to be the next US House Speaker?

The United States Supreme Court begins its new term on Monday, with many hot-button cases on the docket — Gun rights, free speech, Donald Trump's presidential dreams, and more.

A divided court

The top court, as per AFP, is divided one of two ways, 6-3 or 3-3.

It has a conservative majority with three justices appointed by former president Trump — Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett.

The other two — Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, are Republican appointees, designated by Republican presidents George HW Bush and George W Bush.

Chief Justice John Roberts usually aligns with the right wing.

The remaining three — Elena Kagan, Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Jackson, are liberals appointed by Democratic presidents.

Speaking to AFP, David Cole, legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), said the upcoming US Supreme Court session may reveal just how much further to the right the top court will tilt.

"This term will give us more evidence to try to assess what kind of court this is," he said.

"Is it a six-to-three divided court?"

"Or is it, as many have suggested, a three-three-three court with the three Democratic appointees, three very extreme conservatives in Alito, Thomas and Gorsuch, and three sort of in the middle who determine results -- Roberts, Kavanaugh and Barrett?"

Items on docket

Who controls the House of Representatives?

One of the first cases, as per AFP, may affect the control of the US House of Representatives. Currently, Republicans hold a slim majority of 221-212.

The case concerns a congressional map drawn up in South Carolina. Critics claim that the map unconstitutionally discriminates against African American voters, who tend to overwhelmingly vote Democratic.

Trump's presidential dreams

A high-stakes political battle may decide if Trump will once again reside in the White House. Several states have initiated legal efforts to keep him off the presidential ballot on the grounds that he violated his oath of office by provoking the January 6, 2021 attack on Congress.

Gun rights

In November, the court will address a challenge to a law that prohibits people with a domestic violence order from possessing a firearm.

Free speech

A high-profile online free speech case concerning popular social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and others is also on the agenda.

The case will hear challenges against Republican-led states, Texas and Florida laws that would restrict the freedom of these social media websites to moderate content.

Another free speech case concerns California lawyer Steve Elster's attempt to trademark the phrase "Trump too small". A trademark of the phrase that was to be used to mock the former president was rejected by the US Patent and Trademark Office over concerns that Elster doesn't have Trump's written consent to use his name.

Abortion Pill and Transgender Rights

Other cases that may make the docket are the review of restrictions on a widely used abortion pill and transgender rights.

United States former First Lady and former president Donald Trump's wife Melania Trump has renegotiated her prenuptial agreement with her husband for the third time since the two got married in 2005, as per media reports.

According to Page Six, although the updated terms in the agreement involve property and finances, Melania Trump was 'most concerned' about increasing the amount of the trust fund which has been set for the only son of the couple, Barron.

Currently, Barron is 17 years old and only a few months away from turning 18. The publication quoted the sources as saying, “This is at least the third time Melania has renegotiated the terms of her martial agreement.”

As per sources, the changes in the prenup have been made not considering the hopeful second term of Donald Trump as the country's president but rather because of the queue of cases against him.

Amendments made as Trump is liable to pay $5 million to author E. Jean Carroll

“This agreement was necessary because of the current legal battles... [Trump] has suffered,” they stated. The sources said that the couple allegedly claimed that the amendment had been made with the aim to establish a ‘substantial trust’ for their teenage son, as the 77-year-old Trump is liable to pay around $5 million to author E. Jean Carroll after he lost a defamation battle against her in New York.

Donald Trump, whose net worth is estimated to be around $2.5 billion, will be additionally paying another $250 million in NYC, because of an ongoing case against him as well as his businesses.

Another insider, who claimed to be aware of the event, was quoted as saying, “I know that she wanted it to provide her with more money, and also - from what I understand - there’s a specific amount at minimum that Barron is supposed to obtain.”

Barron, who will be 18 years old in March next year, is the youngest among the five children of the former president.

Indian-American entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy vying for the Republican Party's presidential nomination in 2024, in a recent interview with Fox News, emphasised his alignment with former President Donald Trump on policy matters while acknowledging some minor differences.

While acknowledging "very small" differences, Ramaswamy stated that they are "deeply aligned" on policy matters, with over 90 per cent agreement.

Former President Trump, currently the frontrunner in the nomination race, also recently praised Ramaswamy, referring to him as a "smart, young guy." Trump's favourable comments followed Ramaswamy's debut in the Republican presidential primary debate.

When asked about the possibility of a "Vice President Ramaswamy," Trump expressed his interest. During the interview, Ramaswamy affirmed his support for Trump's policies and even pledged to pardon the former president of any potential convictions on his first day in office.

Ramaswamy describes differences with Trump as 'very small': Report

Former US president Donald Trump has charted and seems to be still charting new, unknown territories in US political waters that's seen him claim many 'firsts', but not for a good reason this time. During his time in the Oval Office, Trump became the first US president to be impeached twice. After his address to a rally, mob of his supporters attacked US Capitol building in January 2021. This was first such attack on the Capitol building after the British had attacked it centuries ago.

Then came a slew of legal troubles. He became the first sitting or former US president to be produced in court. He became the first sitting or former US president to face criminal charges. He became the first sitting or former US president whose mugshot was taken by the police, just like they do for petty criminals when they are arrested.

For time and again, Trump has dumbfounded commoners and legal experts alike because this simply hasn't happened before in American history. The officials, police and government lawyers must surely have scratched their heads as there is unlikely to have been an official protocol that lays out procedure for how a former president should be processed when he finds himself in a predicament a petty criminal normally would.

The entire saga may have suddenly acquired a tangible, representative symbol in the form of Trump's mugshot.

This may just not be just another photo. For coming years and even decades, the mugshot is likely to be emblematic of Trump, his presidency, and his troubles probably even after he leaves the mortal world. The mugshot is not just of an individual, but of a former American president and it is likely to evoke many emotions, perhaps of support among his followers or of disdain for people outside watching the incredible situation unfold in the US.

On Thursday (August 24), Trump visited a Georgia jail, facing racketeering and conspiracy charges. He was arrested and released on a USD 200,000 bond.

Trump faces charges of colluding with 18 other defendants to overturn 2020 election results in Georgia. Trump spent less than 30 minutes inside Atlanta's Fulton County Jail.

Fortunately, trump appears to have managed a sufficiently defiant expression when the mugshot was taken. But unfortunately, trollers have pounced on it like this is some comic strip fodder.

He spoke with reporters after his arrest and claimed that it was a "very sad day for America."

"What has taken place here is a travesty of justice," he said. "I did nothing wrong."

In the immediate aftermath of 2020 US Presidential Election, as it became gradually clear that he would be defeated, Trump started levelling a series of allegations in which he essentially claimed that the election was rigged and in reality he has won. Trump, along with his battery of lawyers, approached courts across the US, including the Supreme Court, with their claims of election rigging. Not a single court found any substance in the claims. Trump also called officials of several US states asking them to overturn the results.

The scale of collective activity on his part was massive. And though there was no logical explanation for his claims or supporting evidence, many among his legions of supporters readily believed his claims of election fraud.

Does the latest mugshot diminish Trump's standing?

Trump is not nicknamed 'Teflon Trump' without a reason. Being processed like a petty criminal can normally be death knell for any upright citizen but for Trump, his legal troubles have resulted in a boost in his political ratings.

Trump remains clear frontrunner to win Republican Party nomination to contest US Presidential Election 2024.

Trump campaign appears poised to take benefit of this.

A line of merchandise has now been launched with Trump's mugshot on it. The product range includes T-shirts and long sleeve shirts that are priced at $34. There is a $25 coffee mug and $15 beer koozies.

Watch | Donald Trump surrenders in Atlanta, his mugshot taken × On Thursday (August 24), Trump visited a Georgia jail, facing racketeering and conspiracy charges. He spoke with reporters after his arrest and claimed that it was a "very sad day for America." "What has taken place here is a travesty of justice," he said. "I did nothing wrong." Also Read | Another first for Trump as he becomes first US president, former or sitting, to have a mug shot In the immediate aftermath of 2020 US Presidential Election, as it became gradually clear that he would be defeated, Trump started levelling a series of allegations in which he essentially claimed that the election was rigged and in reality he has won. The tagline for the merch? "NEVER SURRENDER" — in all caps. Explained | The significance of Donald Trump mugshot

Former United States president Donald Trump's chief of staff Mark Meadows and ex-Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark’s requests to block their arrest in the Fulton County election case were rejected by a federal judge on Wednesday (August 23).

In a six-page ruling, Judge Steve Jones, appointed by former prez Barack Obama, denied the request, a day before the Friday deadline for the defendants to surrender.

“As the ongoing Fulton County criminal proceedings and forthcoming arrest warrant arise from the criminal indictment in a criminal action, Section 1455 governs,” said Jones in the ruling.

“And Section 1455 specifically indicates that, until the federal court assumes jurisdiction over a state criminal case, the state court retains jurisdiction over the prosecution and the proceedings continue despite the notice of the removal," he added.

Notably, Trump and 18 co-defendants were indicted in the Georgia case on August 14 by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.

What did the defendants argue?

In the complaint filed, Meadows' lawyers argued he should not be required to surrender for booking in the state case while he fights to have the matter moved to federal court and dismissed

“Unfortunately, the state is set on subjecting Mr Meadows to criminal process in Georgia as quickly as it can and without regard to his pending efforts to remove the case to federal court.”

“In addition to threatening arrest on Friday — in advance of this court’s Monday hearing — the state has also sought a scheduling order that would proceed exceptionally fast for a 19-defendant, 41-count prosecution,” they added.

Meadows has also argued that he is protected from state prosecution under the American Constitution as he was an employee of the federal government during the alleged misconduct.

The 77-year-old former president and the 18 co-defendants in the election racketeering case are to be booked at the Fulton County Jail, also known as the Rice Street Jail, according to the sheriff’s office.

Trump will not undergo standard booking procedure?

The standard booking procedure for a defendant is to be fingerprinted and to have a mugshot taken before they are released on bond.

Trump did not have to undergo the indignity of having a mugshot taken during his three previous arrests this year. In New York on charges of paying hush money to a porn star, in Florida for mishandling top secret government documents and in Washington on charges of conspiring to upend his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden.

Trump to surrender to authorities in Georgia on Thursday. Which jail is he likely to go?

Special Counsel Jack Smith who recently charged Donald Trump with a third indictment for conspiring to overturn the 2020 election, received access to the former president's direct messages, and draft tweets on X, formerly known as Twitter, according to The New York Times report.

Smith got access to the trove of so-called messages earlier this winter but it remains unclear what sort of information those texts contained.

The newly unsealed court papers which contained the transcripts of the proceedings, showed that a lawyer for X, confirmed Judge Howell that the company had turned over “all direct messages, the DMs” to the special counsel's office.

X and Musk siding with Trump?

During the February hearings, Judge Howell repeatedly questioned X whether the company's resistance to share the messages reflected then CEO Elon Musk's efforts to side with Trump.

X initially refused to turn over the information, as Justice Department requested to not disclose the request to Trump. DOJ argued that if Trump learnt about the warrant, it “would result in destruction of or tampering with evidence, intimidation of potential witnesses or serious jeopardy to this investigation".

The Musk-owned company put up resistance adding some of Trump’s direct messages might be covered by executive privilege if he was communicating about state business with other administration officials.
