<p>This energetic, eager-to-please breed saw 98,300 adoptions last year. Giving tough competition to the Labrador was the French Bulldog, who is at number two. These cute canines with their squat bodies wrinkly faces and bat ears witnessed a surge in popularity in 2020.&nbsp;</p>

<p>By the way, these Frenchies interestingly replaced a proud protector from the second spot. The German Shepherd, the all-weather breed, is now on the third spot.&nbsp;</p>

<p>They may look intimidating but they make a great family pet and two of them now have the honour of being America's first pets, Champ and Major. They are living a plush life at the White House with their owner US President Joe Biden.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On the fourth spot is the Golden Retriever. From their soulful piercing eyes to their wise-looking friendly face or their flowing and strikingly golden fur, Americans just couldn't help but bring these beautiful furry companions home.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On the fifth spot is the smooshy Bulldog, followed by the playful Poodle on the sixth, the gentle Beagle on the seventh, the mighty Rottweiler on the eighth and the agile Pointer on the ninth and the goofy Daschund on the 10th spot.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Their popularity may vary but there's no denying that for most people, the only one, who understands them best are their dogs irrespective of their breed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>All pet parents love to post images and videos of their four-legged, furry pets on social media platforms. There is also no doubt that people love to look at these cute images too.</p>

<p>However, now the UK police department has warned pet parents against posting pictures and videos of their pets.</p>

<p>Scientists said Wednesday they had discovered the oldest remains of a domestic dog in the Americas dating back more than 10,000 years, suggesting the animals accompanied the first waves of human settlers.</p>

<p>Humans are thought to have migrated to North America from Siberia over what is today the Bering Strait at the end of the last Ice Age -- between 30,000 and 11,000 years ago.</p>

<p>British pet owners will need a new document to enter the European Union with their animals after the Brexit transition period ends on 1 January next year, the government said on Wednesday. Owners will have to get an animal health certificate from a vet no earlier than 10 days before travel, the government said on its Brexit guidance page.</p>

<p>British pets required only a passport while their country was part of the EU. Only vets officially allowed to inspect animals for export can issue the certificates.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The same rule will apply for taking animals from England, Scotland and Wales to Northern Ireland. But the UK government said its approach to enforcing the rule in Northern Ireland would recognise "these changes will take time to adjust to", without specifying whether there would be a grace period.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Owners will still have to ensure pets are microchipped and have up-to-date rabies vaccinations, as currently. The health certificates will be valid for pets' onward travel for four months. There will be no new rules on pets travelling from the EU into Britain, which will continue to recognise EU pet passports.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The new rules are less complex than if the EU had classified Britain as an "unlisted" country -- the least favourable status. &nbsp; This would have involved animals getting a blood test to check for rabies at least three months ahead of travel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It’s often said that dogs come to resemble their owners with time. The similarities, however, may now have extended to their risk of diabetes, a research suggests.</p>

<p>A new study from researchers in Sweden and the United Kingdom have found that owning a dog with diabetes was tied to a 38 per cent increased risk of type 2 diabetes for the dog owner.</p>

<p>The risk of developing diabetes was also 28 per cent higher in dogs with an owner who had type 2 diabetes compared with dogs with an owner who did not have the ailment. This estimate, however, was reduced after adjusting for age of the owner.</p>

<p>Why the correlation between pooches and their human pals? According to researchers led by Beatrice Kennedy, of Uppsala University in Sweden,&nbsp;</p>

<p>The study further suggests that since dogs and their owners share the same home, they share same behavioral risks too. Those risks include what they eat and how much (or how little) they exercise.</p>

<p>The study compared data from 208,980 owner/dog and 123,566 owner/cat pairs.</p>

<p>The absence of a shared risk between cats and their owners may also point towards physical activity being an important factor.</p>

<p>It is often said and believed that a dog is man's best friend. The saying may or may not be true, but a recent study by some scientists from the UK has shown that a dog is definitely man's oldest best friend.</p>

<p>A study of dog DNA was conducted at the&nbsp;Ancient Genomics laboratory at London's Crick Institute. This study revealed that the dogs have been domesticated since the end of the last age, which is nearly&nbsp;11,000 years ago. This claim has also proved that dogs were the first animal to be domesticated by human beings.</p>

<p>Greger Larson, author and Director of the Palaeogenomics and Bio-Archaeology Research Network at the University of Oxford, says: "Dogs are our oldest and closest animal partner. Using DNA from ancient dogs is showing us just how far back our shared history goes and will ultimately help us understand when and where this deep relationship began."</p>

<p>The study was conducted by leading scientists at the Francis Crick Institute, University of Oxford, University of Vienna and archaeologists from more than 10 countries and was published in the Science journal on Thursday. In this research oh ancient genomes, scientists extracted and analysed DNA from skeletal material.</p>

<p>Dr Pontus Skoglund, co-author of the study and group leader of the Ancient Genomics laboratory at London's Crick Institute, told BBC News: "Dogs are really unique in being this quite strange thing if you think about it when all people were still hunter gatherers, they domesticate what is really a wild carnivore - wolves are pretty frightening in many parts of the world.</p>

<p>"The question of why did people do that? How did that come about? That's what we're ultimately interested in."</p>

<p>The research also revealed that the genetic patterns of dogs were almost similar to that of humans, to some extent. The reason behind this may be that humans were accompanied by their domesticated dogs wherever they moved and shifted. However, differences do exist.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It was also observed that the diversity of dogs that exists today is mainly from the time period when human beings were hunter and gatherers as the dogs were widespread across the Northern Hemisphere by the end of the Ice Age.&nbsp;"Some of the variation you see between dogs walking down the street today originated in the Ice Age. By the end of this period, dogs were already widespread across the northern hemisphere,"&nbsp; Skoglund said.</p>

<p>One thing that the scientists have not been able to figure out is the lack of similarity between human and dog diversity in some cases. The diversity in European countries was diminished by one dog, but the same was nor mirrored in human beings.</p>

The COVID-19 pandemic had disrupted a lot of houses. Many people were stuck away from home. Similarly, a dog was stranded 10,000 miles away from his owners. Pipsqueak, a wiener dog, belonging to an Australian family was sailing around the world with his family when the novel coronavirus hit the world. However, as Australia decided to close their borders, the Eilbeck family — Zoe and Guy Eilbeck, and their sons Cam and Max — had 48 hours to pack up their stuff, dock their 40-foot yacht in Hilton Head Island in South Carolina and fly back to their home country. However, they had to make a tough decision of leaving their dachshund Pip behind as Australia has strict pet import rules. After making a few calls, the Eilbeck family made an eight-hour-long drive to their friend Lynn Williams' house where they left Pip with a hope to come back for him in a few days. However, their hopes came crashing down as the Australian borders remained shut and the coronavirus restrictions got stricter. View this post on Instagram A Pip Pupdate: Thank you enormously to everyone who shared Pip’s plea for a travel buddy across America to LA next week - the post was shared 135 times and viewed by over 18,500 people; we’ve been blown away by the kind offers of help received from so many. Ultimately Pip’s chosen ‘wing gal’ for the two flights from North Carolina to Los Angeles is the amazing Melissa Young @mhyoung83 who has generously offered to take Pip across the country in a time of great uncertainty and deliver her to Jetpets for her onward international journey. At this point Pip will do final vet checks before climbing aboard Air New Zealand to avail herself of their hospitality en route to Auckland. Why NZ? Because Qantas aren’t flying and we need to get this gal home. After a night in NZ to get some sleep and a good meal, Pip will fly cargo to Melbourne to complete her 10 (not 14) day quarantine. We envisioned ourselves driving the 12 hours to Melbourne to collect her (hoping like mad she remembers who the hell we are after all this!) but Victoria’s just closed their borders due to the latest Covid wave so we will find a way to get her out and home to us in the coming weeks - this journey certainly feels like a never ending roller coaster! No one’s kidding themselves that this is going to be a happy trip for Pip but she’s been in limbo now for 4 months and we are determined to get her home! Melissa’s generosity and bravery in taking Pip across borders in the USA is inspiring and humbling. she also happens to be on the Board of a NFP called @sparkyfoundationnc that rescue and find dogs loving homes for “the happily ever after story book ending that they all deserve.” If you wanted to help Pip or just want to acknowledge Melissa’s act of kindness and bravery, please consider donating to her foundation - every cent received will be used wholly for animal rescue in tough times ahead. #thankyou #generosity #helpingothers #cmonpip #dachshund #minidachshund #weinerdog #doxie A post shared by No Plans Just Options (@noplans.justoptions) on Jul 10, 2020 at 6:08am PDT × Little Pip and his family, however, were determined to meet each other soon. So, the family started working on the required paperwork needed to bring Pip back, but was facing one hurdle after another. "To export a dog from America, you need to get a US declaration to say the dog is in good health and has had particular blood tests to do with rabies," Zoe explains. "This was being done in New York, which was now closed. So trying to get anything like that done was extremely difficult." View this post on Instagram Pip travel update: It’s now all on track for flight #3! This is the long one LA to Auckland. After some hiccups with official paperwork Pip has now been successfully processed by the great team at Jetpets in Los Angeles who have been cuddling and walking her during her last day on American soil. @insteinbergram @staceyhopegreen @mhyoung83 and I are on tender-hooks.... She was bumped from one flight to Auckland this afternoon but reconfirmed shortly thereafter on another AirNZ flight which leaves an hour later (who knew there were so many flights going to New Zealand tonight!) Now she’s been checked by the USDA govt vet, accepted by LAX airport and her crate sealed for export 😳 She has a long road now ahead as she waits nearly 4 hours to fly at 10.30pm local time. Flight time is then 13 hours so this will be tough for her, here’s hoping she will sleep most of the way. #goodgirl #cmonhomepip #keepgoing #heregirl #travelingpup #airNZ #aucklandbound #seenz #laflight #aircargo #weinerdog #doxie #dachshund #minidachshund #noplansjustoptions A post shared by No Plans Just Options (@noplans.justoptions) on Jul 21, 2020 at 8:24pm PDT × The family was finally able to conclude the needed paperwork and was excited to meet their dog, but Qantas, the air carrier, announced that the company won't be flying dogs to the country. Pip was then taken by Zoe's brother, who resides in Melbourne. However, Pip's social media popularity came to her rescue as Virgin Australia contacteed the family and agreed to fly Pip home. "Our greatest fear was that she wouldn't remember us after all that time. My kids were so worried that they got a hotdog and rubbed it on their hands. And then this tiny dog walks out through the hangar, strutting along. When she heard our voices, she came barreling into our arms. It was absolutely amazing to have her back after all that time," Zoe said. "I'm conscious that she's a dog, but we think of ourselves as a bit of a crew," said Zoe. "Living on a boat you really have to work together. And even though she just lazed about and didn't really do anything, we still consider her a member of our crew." The family has now put their docked yacht, called No Plans Just Options, on market for sale. However, the family hopes to sail again soon. "It's been a really lovely story to be a part of. Especially during a pretty horrific time in the world for most people," Zoe said.

They call it puppy love: Lockdown Britain sees surge in demand for dogs

<p>Demand for puppies in the United Kingdom has surged amid the coronavirus-induced lockdown.</p>

<p>British breeders reported an increased interest in buying puppies, given the lockdown. For the last three months, people in the country had been confined to their homes.</p>

<p>During this time, one organisation “Kennel Club” reported over 180 per cent increase in inquiries from people wiling to buy dogs.</p>

<p>However, analysts believe that many of these dogs/pups may end up abandoned once social activity resumes and people understand the gravity of responsibility that comes with it.</p>

<p>Many breeders told Reuters that they feared for the future of the pups, saying that many families bought dogs to keep their kids or themselves entertained during the lockdown. However, they may or may not have thought about the effort, money that goes into raising the animal.</p>

<p>Based on this, breeders in the country have come up with a filtering process whereby they do a thorough background check on interested buyers and then ascertain the validity of the purchase. If it feels like a loose plan, the breeders reject the inquiries.</p>

"His (Winston's) amount of virus that we detected was very low, suggesting that he would not be a likely mechanism or vector of transmission of virus to either other animals or to, to humans in these households," Woods explained. "He had a small cough for a day or two right in the peak when all of us were sick and he didn't eat his breakfast one morning," Ben McClean told a media organization. "But we didn't have any concrete, like, super alarming illnesses where we're like, 'we need to take him to the vet. He's like really sick," he added. Sam McClean tested positive for the virus after he treated few COVID-19 patients at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he is a researcher and emergency room doctor. "I would not change our, our behaviors with our household animals at this point. They're really an important part of our ongoing mental health as we continue to participate in our social distancing to combat the pandemic," Woods said. The McClean family has recovered and are out of quarantine now. "We are feeling very grateful that we have the opportunity to participate in this research study," Heather told a media organization. "We are really hopeful that we can donate plasma to be able to help other patients."
