The American Bully has rapidly emerged as a prominent dog breed in the UK in recent times. Although not officially recognised by major UK dog associations, the increasing frequency of news coverage, often depicting tragic incidents involving these dogs, indicates the American Bully's growing presence in the country.

As per the Guardian, the American Bully is a modern variation of the American Bulldog and is typically available in four different types: standard, pocket, classic, and XL. These variations differ in size, with those taller than 50cm (20 inches) falling into the XL category.

Incidents of aggressive dogs

Since 2021, the United Kingdom has reportedly seen nine cases of aggressive individual dogs that have fatally attacked humans. Of the nine cases, three cases involved children.

It is the larger American Bully, classified as XL, that has been responsible for half of all dog-related fatalities in the UK since 2021.

While it is not advisable for first-time dog owners or households with children to own an American Bully, it is worth noting that the two individuals killed by the breed this year were experienced dog handlers.

Tragic incidents involving the breed

In January, a tragic incident occurred in Surrey where a 28-year-old dog walker named Natasha Johnston was fatally attacked while walking eight dogs. The investigation revealed that one of the dogs, an American Bully XL owned by Johnston, was responsible for her death. The dog was subsequently euthanised following a forensic veterinary report.

In a similar incident last month, Jonathan Hogg, a 37-year-old dog caretaker from Greater Manchester, was playing with an American Bully XL when it suddenly attacked him, targeting his throat. Hogg later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The Greater Manchester police had to deploy armed officers to control the dog, which was deemed a significant risk to the public, before ultimately euthanizing it.

Is American Bully an aggressive breed you should be scared of?

The United Kennel Club, one of the few organisations in the US to recognise the American Bully, describes the breed as "first and foremost, a companion, exhibiting confidence with a zest and exuberance for life," and calls its nature "gentle and friendly".

Although there are demands for a ban on the breed, guidance from dog organisations suggests that such a measure might not effectively address the core issue.

The Kennel Club, based in the UK, argues that "Breed-specific legislation ignores the most important factors that contribute to biting incidents–primarily antisocial behaviour by irresponsible dog owners who train their dogs to be aggressive or do not train their dogs adequately."

If the American Bully were to be banned, it would join the Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro as the dog breeds banned in the UK.

Who should adopt/buy the breed?

Experienced dog handlers recommend that first-time dog owners or inexperienced people should not keep this breed.

As per an investigation by BBC One, people often bypass reputable dog breeders and obtain American Bully dogs through classified ads or social media.

UK seeks to ban the American Bully. A killer or 'gentle & friendly' breed? Here's all you need to know

A disturbing video of the Metropolitan Police making rounds on social media where they are seen tasering a man and shooting two dogs in front of screaming witnesses next to a canal in east London’s Limehouse, United Kingdom. The incident took place on Sunday (May 7) and the police department has since released a statement defending its officers.

What happened?

The footage shows officers pursuing a man holding the two dogs on a short lead along a canal in Limehouse when there seemed to be some exchange before the police personnel can be heard telling the owner they need to assess the dogs and him, as when the man shouts back, “Leave them (the dogs) alone”.

The dogs can be seen barking at several armed policemen as the man turned to walk away from the officers. According to media reports citing the footage the man was then pursued by seven officers who told him to come back, it was when he turned back that the dogs were running towards the officers and were held back by their leads.

The police also confirmed that no person was taken to the hospital. “Both dogs were destroyed by police at the scene. This is never an easy decision for any officer to take, but police have a duty to act where necessary before any further injury is caused.” They further indicated that the Met's “directorate of professional standards will review the circumstances of the incident.”

A study has found that dogs and cats could be passing on drug-resistant bacteria to their owners. Molly Gambhir tells you more.

Scientists are gaining insight into how generations are impacted by radiation exposure from a group of stray dogs that live close to the Chernobyl exclusion zone, as reported by the Associated Press.

A study published in Science Advances suggests that the radiation exposure that is still present at Chernobyl decades after the nuclear disaster in 1986 may have profoundly changed the genetic makeup of canine populations.

The genetic makeup of canine populations exposed to various levels of radiation also differs from one another, according to the study.

According to Tim Mousseau, a professor of biological sciences at the University of South Carolina, who spoke to ABC news, the dogs that are still present in the exclusion zone are probably descended from pets that were abandoned after residents of the area surrounding the Chernobyl nuclear power plant hastily left the area while also leaving behind all of their belongings, including their dogs.

The Chernobyl Dog Research Initiative, which has been providing veterinary care, gathered preserved blood samples from more than 300 dogs between 2017 and 2019 in areas with varied degrees of contamination.

At the time that works on the new safe confinement facility for the failing nuclear reactor started, there was worry that the dogs living nearby would be an issue. The volunteers started treating and sterilising the dogs.

Many of the impacts that scientists have discovered in dogs and other animals are similar to those that were noticed in the past with atomic bomb survivors from Japan during World War II, according to Mousseau.

According to the study, the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone canines appear to live near one another, roam between sites, and breed freely because of the region's extensive genetic variances.

Although ionising radiation exposure is known to increase the rate of genetic mutation in a variety of plant and animal species, the study demonstrated that it is still unknown how bigger animals may be affected at the population level.

The distinctive genetic diversity of these dogs makes them excellent subjects for future research examining the long-term genetic health effects of highly radioactive environments on populations of large mammals, particularly in examining the biological bases of human survival in areas of intense and ongoing environmental assault, the researchers said.

"It was a dream come true for me to be able to do some really sophisticated, advanced genetics in a way that had never been done before in this setting and on a model organism," Mousseau said. "What could be a better model for humans than dogs?"

Rescue dogs sashay down the catwalk at New York Fashion Week, delight audience: Watch

From the early years of life, humans have been carrying the urge to extend their hands to animals, as per the researchers who observed the interaction between toddlers and friendly dogs.

Children, who were as two years old only, took extra effort to help dogs get tasty treats and toys which were kept beyond their reach, even though they had never met the dogs before, scientists observed.

The research emphasises that the desires of dogs can be understood by the toddlers and they are willing and have to ability to extend their help to the dogs, even though there is very less chance that the dogs would return the favour.

“It’s really special to see how early this begins,” stated Dr Rachna Reddy, who is the study's first author and an evolutionary anthropologist and holds posts at both Duke University and Harvard University.

“From early in our development we have tendencies to behave prosocially towards other people, to try to understand what’s going on in their minds,” she stated. She added that as per the latest study even toddlers “have the motivation and the ability to extend this kind of helping behaviour to other animals”.

The researchers stated that humans may have been able to thrive in the world because of their friendly approach towards other species, which is visible even in children who are very young and learning to talk and walk.

“Animal domestication was really advantageous to human survival. It really enabled us to live and thrive, there’s a huge evolutionary benefit. Why we came to domesticate animals is a big mystery, and this is one piece of evidence that might help us to understand that mystery,” Reddy said.

She added that as per the latest study even toddlers “have the motivation and the ability to extend this kind of helping behaviour to other animals”. It really enabled us to live and thrive, there’s a huge evolutionary benefit. Why we came to domesticate animals is a big mystery, and this is one piece of evidence that might help us to understand that mystery,” Reddy said. Do you want to have a brain that works fast and ages slowly? Get a pet!

People over 50 years of age who have been pet owners for more than five years had better cognitive memory than people who didn't own one.

Research from the University of Michigan calls it 'the pet effect.' Having a pet not only protects your gut and heart but also slows down the ageing of your brain. Based on a national-level representative survey from 2010 to 2016, answers from more than 20,000 adults on their pet status prove that pet owners are happy, healthy, and intelligent.

The effect of owning pets was more prominent in people above 65 years of age when symptoms of dementia occur. People under this age bracket who have had a pet for more than five years showed better short-term and long-term memory for words than people who didn't.

The researchers tested the participants over six years, and the pet owners achieved better results. However, the findings are only an association and 'the pet effect' is not an actual psychological phenomenon. It might be the opposite case suggesting that people with better cognitive abilities become better pet companions.

But the study does hook with other studies that say having a pet is good for you. Having a pet keeps you on your toes, keeping your brain and body active and healthy. Moreover, animals bring good gut bacteria into the house.

Or perhaps, pets make us happy with their furry tales and innocent eyes!

Dog aficionado in India buys Caucasian shepherd for more than $2 million

We all love watching dogs when they wag their tails, people say they wag their tails to show excitement or happiness. But scientists and dog lovers still wonder what is the actual purpose of the dog's tail. Entire research by an international team went into this, and they concluded that the tail cannot wag the dog.

Various studies in the past have shown that numerous animals from lizards to squirrels use their tails to pull off impressive manoeuvres such as righting themselves mid-air when falling from trees. Cats also use their tails to balance themselves when flipping over and landing on their feet, they also use their tail as a counterweight to perform extreme hunting moves in the wild, including rapid, tight turns to keep up with their prey.

As dogs are more inclined to stay on the ground, scientists have been unclear whether dogs' tails help them with agile movements or not, said a report in The Guardian. Some were of the opinion that a dog's tail primarily served as a waggable communication device, and/or to ward off unwanted visitors such as flies.

To know more about this, Dr Ardian Jusufu, who studies animal locomotion at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Stuttgart, and his colleagues built a mathematical model that allowed them to check what happens when dogs twist and turn their torsos, and move their legs and tails when they bound into the air.

The study concludes that "Tail wags the dog is unsupported by biomechanical modelling of Canidae tails use during terrestrial motion." In simple words, the tail movements made by dogs made almost no difference to a dog's trajectory when it leapt into the air.

The findings suggest that tails are not as critical for agile movements in dogs as they are for other animals. Moving the tail mid-jump, the researchers found, changed the dog’s trajectory by a mere fraction of a degree.

Across the dog family, "It appears the inertial impacts that tail movement has on complex manoeuvres such as jumping, have little to no effect," the authors write. "The utilising of the tail during jumping … achieves very low amounts of the centre of mass movement across all species with the largest being under a single degree."

"We believe that this implies that dogs utilise their tails for other means, such as communication and pest control, but not for agility in manoeuvres", they further added.

According to previous research, dogs use their tails to communicate everything from dominance and friendliness to fear and appeasement. A tail held high signifies confidence or a dog’s willingness to play, while a stiff tail can express a threat or anxiety. When the tail is down low or tucked between the legs, the animal might be afraid, but loose wagging from side to side communicates friendliness.

Found in Kansas after one year,

To solve Russia’s issue of homeless animals, the deputy for the Communist Party in Oryol, Viktor Makarov, suggested that homeless dogs can be used as suicide bombers to "blow up tanks" in Ukraine, reported the Orel Times on Friday. The suggestion was given in the Legislative Assembly’s recent session where previously Makarov had suggested that the dogs can be sent to China.

The comments of Makarov caught the attention of Meduza’s managing editor Kevin Rothrock, who on Saturday tweeted, "A Communist deputy in Russia's Oryol region wants to train stray dogs to run at Ukrainian tanks as suicide bombers.”

The comments of Makarov caught the attention of Meduza’s managing editor Kevin Rothrock, who on Saturday tweeted, "A Communist deputy in Russia's Oryol region wants to train stray dogs to run at Ukrainian tanks as suicide bombers.” A Communist deputy in Russia's Oryol region wants to train stray dogs to run at Ukrainian tanks as suicide bombers. Do you love dogs? Well, if yes, that's good, and if not, you will now.

As per the research at the University of Basel, it was found that seeing, feeling, and touching dogs causes the prefrontal cortex of the brain to become increasingly more active.

The researchers found that this impact is less when you touch stuffed animals rather than real dogs.

The findings suggest that a deeper understanding of the accompanying brain activity could aid in designing more effective systems for animal-assisted therapy because engaging with animals, particularly dogs, is known to help individuals cope with stress and sadness.

The researchers observed the brain activity of 19 men and women as they looked at dogs, reclined with the same dogs against their legs, or caressed dogs as part of the study, Knowridge science report reported.

A fur-covered lion filled with a water bottle to match the dog's weight and temperature were used to stimulate the scenarios.

The researchers found that individuals' pre-frontal brain activity increased when they interacted with real dogs, with caressing being the most interactive action.

However, interactions with stuffed lions did not result in this, suggesting it may be because of bonding. The current stud demonstrates that volunteers' prefrontal brain activity increases with an increase in interactional closeness with a dog.

The study demonstrated that a dog could arouse emotions more strongly and activate attentional processes more so than stuffed toys.

Scientists have discovered that humans emit a different odour when they are under stress, and dogs have the ability to detect it.

Previous research had shown that dogs can pick up on different emotions of humans through smell, but doubts remained whether they are able to find out if people are under stress.

“This study has definitively proven that people, when they have a stress response, their odour profile changes,” said Clara Wilson, a doctoral candidate at Queen’s University Belfast, and first author of the research, reports the Guardian.

She contended that the study could be useful while training service dogs, such as those that support people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The study was published on Wednesday in the journal PLOS ONE.

Under this study, the canines were trained to search a scent line-up — which had breath and sweat samples from study participants — and alert the researchers of the correct sample. The stress and relaxed samples were then introduced but at this stage, the researchers didn't know if there was an odour difference that dogs could detect.

In every session, a dog was given a person's relaxed and stressed samples, taken only four minutes apart. All of the dogs were able to correctly alert the researchers to each person's stress sample.

The study noted that the participant dogs were able to detect different emotions with more than 90 per cent accuracy.

The study’s author, Wilson, said while the dogs were specifically trained to differentiate the samples, it is possible that even untrained pet dogs might detect changes in odour when a human becomes stressed.

Do you know the canine team of the Indian Army is the first responder in every anti-terror operation in Jammu and Kashmir? The success of these operations mostly depends on the highly trained members of the Indian Army's dog squad.

The security forces in Jammu and Kashmir are using high-tech equipment like drones and pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras in anti-terror operations. And now the dogs equipped with GoPro cameras and walkie-talkies used for giving commands to them during operations. This has proven to be one of the most effective and safest ways to carry out an operation.

The dogs from the unit are first sent to detect the location of the hiding terrorists and the arms and ammunition they are carrying. The feed from cameras fitted on these dogs is monitored from a control room. These dogs are trained to enter the location of the hiding terrorists without getting noticed by them. They are also trained not to bark during these operations.

If these dogs are noticed by the hiding terrorists and are attacked by them, the dogs respond with a counter-attack. The handler of the dog always keeps a sharp vigil on the situation.

''Our dogs are doing wonderful service for the Army as well as the civil population in city areas. They are being used extensively for explosive detection in Road Opening Party (ROP) duties, for sanitising any VIP or vulnerable area. They are actively used as the first responders in the operations also,'' said Abhay Khokhar, Lt Col, Dog Squad, Indian Army.

The Indian Army has various breeds of dogs in its units across India. These include labradors, german shepherds, Belgian malinois and great mountain swiss dogs. Among the Indian breeds, the mudhol hound is part of the units as well. These dogs are used for various purposes like guard duty, patrolling, sniffing explosives including Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), mine detection, sniffing contraband items, including drugs, and attacking targets.

''We have eight major specialities of army dogs in the Indian Army, they are used for explosive and mine detection, tracking, search and rescue operations, avalanche rescue missions and other situations as per requirements. We train dogs as per the requirements of the Indian Army. Majorly, we have labradors, german shepherds, and recently introduced Belgian shepherds. Apart from these international breeds, we have tried certain Indian breeds also like Mudhol Hounds. We have trained them for various tasks, and they have been deployed in the Indian Army and are doing well,'' added Lt Col Abhay Khokhar.

Every Indian Army dog has a handler to train and guide them daily. The main training starts at the Remount and Veterinary Corps Centre and College in Meerut. These dogs are trained for over nine months and later for three months on the ground. The Army keeps these dogs for around seven-eight years depending on their agility. These dogs are provided special food and nutrition to keep them healthy and active.

"All these dogs are trained at the RVC Centre and College at Meerut where we have a proper facility for training. After training, these dogs are inducted into dog units which are mostly in the field. We keep training them as per requirements in the operational areas. They are given a balanced diet comprising rice, milk, meat vegetables, dog biscuits and other supplements,'' said Lt Col Khokhar.

The Indian Army has more than 27 dog units across the country. Around 24 dogs are a part of one unit. Some dogs are born in the RVC Centre and some of them are brought from outside. The Indian Army chooses the best ones and trains them after checking if they are suited for the environment.

''There are many things that we look for in an Army Dog. We see whether the dog is trainable and suited for the environment they are to be placed in. Whether they are fit for Indian weather, summer, and winters. We keep all this in mind and then select a breed and give them respective tasks. For protection work, for guard duties, and assault duties, we prefer Belgian shepherds and german shepherds. For sniffing purposes, we use labradors. The Indian Army even has special awards for dogs for their bravery. From the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card, Vice Chief of Staff Commendation Card and GOC in Chief Commendation Card, these dogs are awarded for their performance during various operations.

The Indian Army recently lost a dog named Axel in an operation in Jammu and Kashmir. Axel was shot dead by terrorists in North Kashmir's Baramulla district. Two-year-old Axel was given a gallantry award by the Government of India on Independence Day.

Dogs are an instant source of serotonin and oxytocin for many. The way they jump across the room and rush to their owners, wagging their cute little tails is something that seals an eternal bond between humans and their most faithful pet. Now, a study has revealed that during this reuniting moment, dogs tend to get more teary-eyed than usual.

Reportedly, the study published by Japanese scientists in the journal Current Biology states that dogs tear up with joy and happiness whenever they are reunited with their owners after a prolonged period of absence.

"We found that dogs shed tears associated with positive emotions. We also made the discovery of oxytocin as a possible mechanism underlying it," said one of the authors related to the study.

The team of scientists used a test called the Schirmer Tear Test to gauge its hypothesis on 20 dogs. In the test, a paper strip is placed inside the eyelid of the furry pets for a minute before and after they were reunited with their owners.

To make the results more comprehensive and true, the scientists used a normal meeting of the dog and its owner as the baseline. Afterwards, both readings were compared, allowing the scientists to make an informed inference.

The study clearly showed that the dogs produced more tears within the first five minutes of the reunification. Reportedly, the baseline readings were around the 22mm mark, which increased by 10 per cent after the meeting.

According to the researchers, they even compared the data when the dogs were reunited with someone they were familiar with. However, the tears only increased when reunited with the owner.

Takefumi Kikusui, co-author of the study and a professor at the Laboratory of Human-Animal Interaction first got the idea of conducting such research when he saw his poodle swell up with tears while tending to her.

"That gave me the idea that oxytocin could increase the tears,” remarked Kikusui.

Wearable fans in clothes? Pet animals in Japan get a breather from the scorching heat

While walking on the streets, one may spot a charming puppy wagging its tail, lying near the garbage bin, waiting for someone to give him good care and food, perhaps waiting to be adopted. Would you adopt? No, right? Because what we humans want is a high-class dog that makes us feel rich, isn’t it?

As per reports, India is one of the countries that is growing faster in breeding high-class dogs. We, Indians, are fascinated by everything foreign and have developed an attraction for pedigree dogs - “PEDIGREED” and, of course, we want it at the lowest price possible as if it’s a grocery item manufactured in a factory or a mill.

So, to meet our materialistic demands, breeders set up mills. Yes, exactly puppy mills. For years together, dog breeders are working outside the law. With the fascination of foreign canines around, they force these dogs to mate their own brothers to sisters, father to daughter, and bought for this world to sell to people who buy for ‘status’. In short, they are forced to ‘RAPE’ using ‘Rape stands’ with their own blood just for our human selfishness. Dog breeding is a marketable business that earns lakhs of rupees. They are all illegal backyard breeders whose income they do not recognize as no amount comes to the government, as it’s an unregulated activity. Additionally, the number of backyard breeders has mushroomed around the country as the demand for high-class pets has grown.

If breeders abide by the laws and regulations put down by the government, breeding is legal. However, the ones treating the animals cruelly are not. To be honest, in most cases, these mills aren’t bothered about the state their dogs live in. Most of these litters are not registered with the Animal Welfare Board and thus are not cared for or housed before they are sold off. They cage dogs and keep them restricted in dark areas and surviving in contaminated places. These are treated as profit-making products. Further, this breeding activity has led to a variety of birth defects or genetic disorders.

The so-called man’s best friend is put through the most physical and mental trauma. What is more upsetting is that it forcibly bred them using ‘RAPE STANDS’ without sufficient resting periods in between births. The females are injected with hormones to speed their cycles. The discomfort that females undergo during unnatural heat periods increases the risk of uterine cancer. Consequently, the puppies are born with genetic, behavioural and psychological issues that make life miserable for years. Several dies in this process while others are abandoned once unusable. Lately, abandoned dogs have been transported to the Northeastern states of India and subsequently exported to other countries for HUMAN CONSUMPTION.

The recent Kannada movie ‘Charlie 777’ has influenced a lot of “Pedigree lovers”. The word ‘Pedigree Lovers’ is deliberately pointed out as we find that the demand for ‘Labradors’ increased after the release of the movie. However, the viewers have overlooked that the movie evidently reminds us that the dog ‘Charlie’ escaped a cruel breeder and later suffered from cancer at a tender age. Further, the vet alleged that this resulted due to the breeder’s unwanted breeding techniques and constant torture by INJECTING HORMONES as she was a female. Such movies give us moral messages, but do we humans understand the plight of these dogs? Is it too difficult to realize?

Newborn puppies are dumped into one cage in hazardous conditions. As per reports, it was found that when buyers visit the breeders; the puppies were kept away from their mother and were fed once a day. These pups are often denied veterinary care. When asked about vaccinations, the breeders nod that they are dewormed. Genetic issues are widespread in any breeding instance. They include physical problems, fear-based disorder, and many other issues.

All this has led to disruption in the ecosystem. Hundreds of dogs die inside these puppy mills and are never cremated properly, but just dumped. The feces are never cleaned or disposed of properly. These hazardous bacteria enter the soil, water, and air, causing a threat to the ecosystem. Adding ‘more’ to the ecosystem is not what we want. Right?

“If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man”. Every time a dog is bred, homeless dogs lose the opportunity to have a good life. A dog waiting in an animal shelter loses a chance at finding a loving home. It is irresponsible to bring more dogs into the world when numerous dogs are suffering every day because there are no homes for them.

This is clearly a man-made mess to meet his greed. Here, both breeders and buyers are responsible for engaging in such a monstrous act. The responsibility lies not only with dog lovers or pedigree lovers but, on all of us.

Awareness is the primary step to bring in the change. Speak to probable pet parents who are planning to buy a dog. Let them know how heinous acts are performed and can affect various levels. Spread awareness on social media by sharing informational content, bust operations and various stories so that they are inspired to ADOPT AND NOT SHOP. Boycott pet shops, report websites selling dogs and inform pet shelters and rescuers.

Here are a few guidance/tips on how you can take down dog breeders and puppy mills-

· Don’t fall prey to unrealistic prices. To get rid of a sick pup, the breeder may sell it for a throwaway price.

· Insist on visiting the facility to check the environment of how pups are kept. If you are restricted, know that something is fishy.

· Always get pups that are more than 8 weeks of age. Obtain a birth certificate card from the breeder and ensure that it holds a veterinary signature and stamp.

· Ethical breeders perform background verification of pet parents and generally ask questions to ensure that the family is capable of taking care of the dog in the future.

· Ethical breeders will always follow law-prescribed procedures by signing a contract and handing over the pup’s veterinary records, including vaccination details.

· If you are prepared to care for a dog properly and for a lifetime adopt a dog from a shelter. Additionally, you can donate an equivalent amount you were supposed to give to the breeder instead.

Lastly, it is to remind all of us that “Dogs have always been loyal for ages”. Know that every dog deserves to be treated with self-esteem and respect, but not as a money-making product. “Dogs come into our lives to teach us about love, they depart to teach us about loss”.

While walking on the streets, one may spot a charming puppy wagging its tail, lying near the garbage bin, waiting for someone to give him good care and food, perhaps waiting to be adopted.

Dog lovers or pedigree lovers? The ugly truth about illegal dog breeding

Dogs never cease to surprise us. They seem to read our emotions and be empathetic. Thousands of years with humankind may have made them our best friends, but we have just begun to understand them. A research has now said that dogs may be able to 'see' through their powerful sense of smell.

That dogs sense of smell is much superior to humans is a known fact. Their nose has more than 220 million odour-detecting cels, more than four times than those in humans. This is pretty much known.

But the new research suggests that smell may form much greater part in dog's perception of its surroundings than thought before.

The researchers scanned brains of 23 domestic dogs with the help of a special MRI. They found that connections between regions of the brain that processed smell and vision were especially strong.

"We've never seen this connection between the nose and the occipital lobe, functionally the visual cortex in dogs, in any species," Cornell University neuroimaging researcher Pip Johnson explains. He was quoted by Cornell Chronicle

"It was really consistent. And size-wise, these tracts were really dramatic compared to what is described in the human olfactory system, more like what you'd see in our visual systems."

What this means is that dogs form spatial awareness, a mental picture of surrounding more using their sense of smell like we do using vision.

This perhaps explains why even blind dogs can play a game of fetch.

The research has been published in The Journal of Neuroscience.

Dogs may be 'seeing' through smells, says a study

Our existence on this planet is inextricably linked to the millions of species that also call it home. Of them, there are many that made their way into our hearts as pets. Our bonding with pets doesn't need an introduction. From celebrities flaunting their pets to people buying pet-specific accessories, from visiting pet cafes to having pet crematoriums, from crying when a dog dies in a movie to watching cat videos on loop, we undeniably are in love. Animal lovers understand that having a pet is not only a responsibility but a privilege. In a world like this, it is a privilege to have a heart that cares for a voiceless creature. If you have one such, you mustn't wait to read these books about humans' glorious bond with their companion animals. While the ones that are made into movies are already celebrated, I tried to mention those which I felt are underrated.

Felix the Railway Cat by Kate Moore:
Felix is Huddersfield Station's Senior Pest Controller and Chief Happiness Officer. As the station was yearning for a cat, an employee rescued a pregnant cat which eventually birthed Felix. First mistaken to be a male, Felix won the hearts of all the employees of the station, including those who didn't have an affinity to cats. Workplaces of Tata, Amazon, and Google have made headlines for bringing dogs to the office because, why not?

The book describes Felix's growth, her skills, naughtiness, tricks, achievements, and most importantly, her relationship with the staff and commuters of the station. It is when a regular commuter creates a Facebook page that Felix rose to fame.

The author writes about Felix with immense empathy and vivid descriptions, as though she is writing about one of us. The second reason I love this book is the way it is narrated, with the right amount of wit, emotion, and seriousness. The first reason is apparently the cover.

Wild and Wilful by Neha Sinha
This is undoubtedly my favourite Indian book about animals so far. Neha Sinha, a wildlife conservationist talks about select rare Indian species of animals in detail, her work with them, and the bias she faced as a woman close to wildlife. Neha and her fellow women are met with judging looks when they work with wild animals, more so in villages.

While giving the scientific information, Neha also adds a humane angle to the whole human-animal conflict. She talks about animals with empathy and kindness. The book covers various aspects ranging from laws and policies on paper to the ground reality that tribal and rural people have to face. It constantly reiterates that wild animals are living things that have feelings. Neha also talks to fellow conservationists and researchers to bring out the facts and curb the myths about so-called cruel animals.
We need more people to read, write and be like her to save animals because it is already too late.

The Traveling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa
It is only a coincidence that I read this book during a long travel.

Found under Satoru's car, Nana didn't take much time to get into his house. Having lost his fond cat Hachi as a kid Satoru dotes over Nana. However, circumstances compel Satoru to give Nana up for adoption. Thus begins their long journey from one city to another, from van to train, requesting quite a few of his friends to adopt Nana. At each stage, we meet Satoru's friends and the various instances that shaped his life. None of the adoptions worked. During the journey, Nana experiences new places, new friends and of course, some troubles. He is smart enough to know what is going on and stubborn enough to not leave Satoru's side ever. What persuades Satoru to give up the apple of his eye and how their journey culminates is for you to read.

As we see shelters overflowing with recklessly abandoned pets, it is heartwarming to read about someone take this commitment. This story depicts how our pets are going to be with us and they should be, no matter what. Reading Nana's point of view felt like communicating with animals, which we normally can't do. That is what makes the story extremely personal. Through Nana, the author presents the thoughts of our pets - about us, about other animals, about life and the world in general. They think much more than they show. They understand what we don't tell.

Nana talks to us, questions us, makes us laugh, cry, wonder and think. If it had such profound impact on me, a dog person who never had a cat, I can only imagine how touching it will leave cat owners.

A dog's life: The Autobiography of a Stray by Ann. M Martin
For someone who fosters the dogs of her street, this book is a gift. In my opinion, it is the best description of the life of a stray.
The story, as the name suggests, is the autobiography of a puppy born as a nobody. The author takes us through the stormy life that leads her way home. However, there are bleak chances of strays finding loving homes, in real life.

Our protagonist is named Squirrel. Squirrel and Bone are born in an abandoned toolshed. Before they could learn the essential survival skills, they lost their mother. Squirrel is later seperated from Bone too. Thereon, she fights everyday for her survival.

Considering how the author breathes life into Squirrel, it isn't a surprise that she owns a dog and cats. It is vital to remember that the dog may be fictional but the story is not. Every dog we see on the road is as helpless and disadvantaged as Squirrel. In multiple incidents, the author shows how humans let down the man's best friend. It is a must-read for people working with dog shelters or in an individual capacity.

Laika's Window by Kurt Caswell
Once an anonymous mongrel on the streets of Moscow, Laika is now immortalised. To say that she sacrificed her life would be an understatement. It is a joy that sending animals to space is banned now. What happened to Laika is unfair, to say the least.

The author, through poetic and empathetic descriptions, writes what Laika might have gone through during the grueling process. Did she know that she was being sent on a one-way mission? Did she understand why she was being subjected to unbearable torture? When she looked out of the window of her spacecraft, what did she see?

This book depicts how an innocent little girl lost in the space war between two countries and suffered in the name of science. It was a tough read for me, contemplating how we claim to love dogs yet are willing to let them die so that we explore the cosmos. I appreciate that the author concerned enough about Laika to present the whole event from her point of view. Reading this is sure to leave one in thought, for we have known Laika merely as a dog that died in space; never as a living thing that suffered till the very end.

5 books animal lovers should absolutely not miss

A 12-week-old Bichon Frise cross puppy named Daisy had emergency surgery after x-rays revealed that she had swallowed 20 coins from the missing purse of her owner. The puppy was taken to the vet after she stopped eating adequately and started vomiting multiple times, reported The Guardian.

"I couldn't believe it when PDSA rang to tell me Daisy had swallowed so many coins. My purse had been missing, and we'd searched high and low for it, not thinking it was Daisy who was the culprit who ran off with it," the Guardian quoted Daisy's owner, Ivana from Derby.

X-rays conducted revealed shocking images which showed that the puppy had swallowed a variety of coins, including three 1ps, three 5ps, two 20ps, and two £1 coins, summing up a total of £2.68.

Vet nurse Sally Frith, who works at Derby PDSA Pet hospital, told The Guardian, "Daisy has broken a new record; we couldn't believe the number of coins she'd managed to eat, especially for such a tiny puppy."

"The coins had been causing a blockage which, if left, could have been fatal, so it's a good job her owner brought her into PDSA when she did."

UK's leading vet charity, PDSA, said that Daisy was examined, and vets could identify that her stomach was the cause of her pain. This raised suspicions of a blockage, so she was sedated and then X-rayed to gather conclusive results.

"I had no idea a puppy would even eat this sort of thing, and we were all beside ourselves with worry and so scared we might lose her. My four-year-old daughter is best friends with Daisy, and she was very upset," Daisy's owner, Ivana, added.

The PDSA claimed that Daisy's surgery was successfully completed and that she was sent back home with painkillers and antibiotics on the following day.

"Daisy has been back for check-ups, and we're pleased she's recovering and healing well," Vet nurse Sally Frith added.

Vet nurse Sally Frith, who works at Derby PDSA Pet hospital, told The Guardian, "Daisy has broken a new record; we couldn't believe the number of coins she'd managed to eat, especially for such a tiny puppy." "The coins had been causing a blockage which, if left, could have been fatal, so it's a good job her owner brought her into PDSA when she did." Watch | Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary treats pets UK's leading vet charity, PDSA, said that Daisy was examined, and vets could identify that her stomach was the cause of her pain. "Daisy has been back for check-ups, and we're pleased she's recovering and healing well," Vet nurse Sally Frith added.
