Based on a national-level representative survey from 2010 to 2016, answers from more than 20,000 adults on their pet status prove that pet owners are happy, healthy, and intelligent.

The effect of owning pets was more prominent in people above 65 years of age when symptoms of dementia occur. People under this age bracket who have had a pet for more than five years showed better short-term and long-term memory for words than people who didn't.

Cats also use their tails to balance themselves when flipping over and landing on their feet, they also use their tail as a counterweight to perform extreme hunting moves in the wild, including rapid, tight turns to keep up with their prey.&nbsp;

As dogs are more inclined to stay on the ground, scientists have been unclear whether dogs' tails help them with agile movements or not, said a report in The Guardian. Some were of the opinion that a dog's tail primarily served as a waggable&nbsp;communication device, and/or to ward off unwanted visitors such as flies.&nbsp;

To know more about this, Dr Ardian Jusufu, who studies animal locomotion at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Stuttgart, and his colleagues built a mathematical model that allowed them to check what happens when dogs twist and turn their torsos, and move their legs and tails when they bound into the air.

The study concludes that "Tail wags the dog is unsupported by biomechanical modelling of Canidae tails use during terrestrial motion." In simple words, the tail movements made by dogs made almost no difference to a dog's trajectory when it leapt into the air.

To solve Russia’s issue of homeless animals, the deputy for the Communist Party in Oryol, Viktor Makarov, suggested that homeless dogs can be used as suicide bombers to "blow up tanks" in Ukraine, reported the Orel Times on Friday. The suggestion was given in the Legislative Assembly’s recent session where previously Makarov had suggested that the dogs can be sent to China.

The researchers found that individuals' pre-frontal brain activity increased when they interacted with real dogs, with caressing being the most interactive action.

However, interactions with stuffed lions did not result in this, suggesting it may be because of bonding.&nbsp;The current stud demonstrates that volunteers' prefrontal brain activity increases with an increase in interactional closeness with a dog.&nbsp;

Scientists have discovered that humans emit a different odour when they are under stress, and dogs have the ability to detect it.&nbsp;

Previous research had shown that dogs can pick up on different emotions of humans through smell, but doubts remained whether they are able to find out if people are under stress.&nbsp;

“This study has definitively proven that people, when they have a stress response, their odour profile changes,” said Clara Wilson, a doctoral candidate at Queen’s University Belfast, and first author of the research, reports the Guardian.&nbsp;

She contended that the study could be useful while training service dogs, such as those that support people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).&nbsp;

The&nbsp;study was published on Wednesday in the&nbsp;journal PLOS ONE.&nbsp;

Under this study, the canines were trained to search a scent line-up — which&nbsp;had breath and sweat samples from study participants — and alert the researchers of the correct sample. The stress and relaxed samples were then introduced but at this stage, the researchers didn't know if there was an odour difference that dogs could detect.&nbsp;

In every session, a dog was given a person's relaxed and stressed samples, taken only four minutes apart. All of the dogs were able to correctly alert the researchers to each person's stress sample.&nbsp;

The study noted that the participant dogs were able to detect different emotions with more than 90 per cent accuracy.&nbsp;

The study’s author, Wilson, said while the dogs were specifically trained to differentiate the samples, it is possible that even untrained pet dogs might detect changes in odour when a human becomes stressed.&nbsp;

And now the dogs equipped with GoPro cameras and walkie-talkies used for giving commands to them during operations. This has proven to be one of the most effective and safest ways to carry out an operation.

The dogs from the unit are first sent to detect the location of the hiding terrorists and the&nbsp;arms and ammunition they are carrying. The feed from cameras fitted on these dogs is monitored from a control room. These dogs are trained to enter the location of the hiding terrorists without getting noticed by them. They are also trained not to bark during these operations.

If these dogs are noticed by the hiding terrorists and are attacked by them, the dogs respond with a counter-attack. The handler of the dog always keeps a sharp vigil on the situation.

The Indian Army has various breeds of dogs in its units across India. These include labradors, german shepherds, Belgian malinois and great mountain swiss dogs. Among the Indian breeds, the mudhol hound is part of the units as well. These dogs are used for various purposes like guard duty, patrolling, sniffing explosives including Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), mine detection, sniffing contraband items, including drugs, and attacking targets.

''We have eight major specialities of army dogs in the Indian Army, they are used for explosive and mine detection, tracking, search and rescue operations, avalanche rescue missions and other situations as per requirements. We train dogs as per the requirements of the Indian Army. Majorly, we have&nbsp;labradors, german shepherds, and recently introduced Belgian shepherds. Apart from these international breeds, we have tried certain Indian breeds also like Mudhol Hounds. We have trained them for various tasks, and they have been deployed in the Indian Army and are doing well,'' added Lt Col Abhay Khokhar.

Every Indian Army dog has a handler to train and guide them daily. The main training starts at the Remount and Veterinary Corps Centre and College in Meerut. These dogs are trained for over nine months and later for three months on the ground. The Army keeps these dogs for around seven-eight years depending on their agility. These dogs are provided special food and nutrition to keep them healthy and active.

"All these dogs are trained at the RVC Centre and College at Meerut where we have a proper facility for training. After training, these dogs are inducted into dog units which are mostly in the field. We keep training them as per requirements in the operational areas. They are given a balanced diet comprising&nbsp;rice, milk, meat vegetables, dog biscuits and other supplements,'' said Lt Col Khokhar.

The Indian Army has more than 27 dog units across the country. Around 24 dogs are a part of one unit. Some dogs are born in the RVC Centre and some of them are brought from outside. The Indian Army chooses the best ones and trains them after checking if they are suited for the environment.

''There are many things that we look for in an Army Dog. We see whether the dog is trainable and&nbsp;suited for the environment they are to be placed in. Whether they are fit for Indian weather, summer, and winters. We keep all this in mind and then select a breed and give them respective tasks. Every breed has its pros and cons.&nbsp;We select the breeds keeping in mind the task for&nbsp;them. For protection work, for guard duties, and assault duties, we prefer Belgian shepherds and german shepherds. For sniffing purposes, we use&nbsp;labradors. We are using mudhol hounds, cocker spaniel, and many other Indian breeds,'' he added.

The Indian Army even has special awards for dogs for their bravery. From the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card, Vice Chief of Staff Commendation Card and GOC in Chief Commendation Card, these dogs are awarded for their performance during various operations.

The Indian Army recently lost a dog named Axel in an operation in Jammu and Kashmir. Axel was shot dead by terrorists in North Kashmir's Baramulla district. Two-year-old Axel was given a gallantry award by the Government of India on Independence Day.

Now, a study has revealed that during this reuniting moment, dogs tend to get more teary-eyed than usual.

Reportedly, the study published by Japanese scientists in the journal Current Biology states that dogs tear up with joy and happiness whenever they are reunited with their owners after a prolonged period of absence.&nbsp;

"We found that dogs shed tears associated with positive emotions. We also made the discovery of oxytocin as a possible mechanism underlying it," said one of the authors related to the study.&nbsp;

The team of scientists used a test called the Schirmer Tear Test to gauge its hypothesis on 20 dogs. In the test, a paper strip is placed inside the eyelid of the furry pets for&nbsp;a minute before and after they were reunited with their owners.&nbsp;

To make the results more comprehensive and true, the scientists used a normal meeting of the dog and its owner as the baseline. Afterwards, both readings were compared, allowing the scientists to make an informed inference.&nbsp;

The study clearly showed that the dogs produced more tears within the first five minutes of the reunification. Reportedly, the baseline readings were&nbsp;around the 22mm mark,&nbsp;which increased by 10 per cent after the meeting.&nbsp;

According to the researchers, they even compared the data when the dogs were reunited with someone they were familiar with. However, the tears only increased when reunited with the owner.&nbsp;

Takefumi Kikusui, co-author of the study and a professor at the Laboratory of Human-Animal Interaction first got the idea of conducting such research when he saw his poodle swell up with tears while tending to her.

"That gave me the idea that oxytocin could increase the tears,” remarked Kikusui.&nbsp;

With the fascination of foreign canines around, they force these dogs to mate their own brothers to sisters, father to daughter, and bought for this world to sell to people who buy for ‘status’. In short, they are forced to ‘RAPE’ using ‘Rape stands’ with their own blood just for our human selfishness. Dog breeding is a marketable business that earns lakhs of rupees. They are all illegal backyard breeders whose income they do not recognize as no amount comes to the government, as it’s an unregulated activity. Additionally, the number of backyard breeders has mushroomed around the country as the demand for high-class pets has grown.&nbsp;

If breeders abide by the laws and regulations put down by the government, breeding is legal. However, the ones treating the animals cruelly are not. The recent Kannada movie ‘Charlie 777’ has influenced a lot of “Pedigree lovers”. The word ‘Pedigree Lovers’ is deliberately pointed out as we find that the demand for ‘Labradors’ increased after the release of the movie. However, the viewers have overlooked that the movie evidently reminds us that the dog ‘Charlie’ escaped a cruel breeder and later suffered from cancer at a tender age. Further, the vet alleged that this resulted due to the breeder’s unwanted breeding techniques and constant torture by INJECTING HORMONES as she was a female. Such movies give us moral messages, but do we humans understand the plight of these dogs? Is it too difficult to realize?

Newborn puppies are dumped into one cage in hazardous conditions. As per reports, it was found that when buyers visit the breeders; the puppies were kept away from their mother and were fed once a day. These pups are often denied veterinary care. When asked about vaccinations, the breeders nod that they are dewormed. Genetic issues are widespread in any breeding instance. They include physical problems, fear-based disorder, and many other issues.

All this has led to disruption in the ecosystem. Hundreds of dogs die inside these puppy mills and are never cremated properly, but just dumped. The feces are never cleaned or disposed of properly. These hazardous bacteria enter the soil, water, and air, causing a threat to the ecosystem. Adding ‘more’ to the ecosystem is not what we want. Right?

“If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man”. Every time a dog is bred, homeless dogs lose the opportunity to have a good life. A dog waiting in an animal shelter loses a chance at finding a loving home. It is irresponsible to bring more dogs into the world when numerous dogs are suffering every day because there are no homes for them.

This is clearly a man-made mess to meet his greed. Here, both breeders and buyers are responsible for engaging in such a monstrous act. The responsibility lies not only with dog lovers or pedigree lovers but, on all of us.

Awareness is the primary step to bring in the change. Speak to probable&nbsp;pet parents who are planning to buy a dog. Let them know how heinous acts are performed and can affect various levels. Spread awareness on social media by sharing informational content, bust operations and various stories so that they are inspired to ADOPT AND NOT SHOP. That dogs sense of smell is much superior to humans is a known fact. Their nose has more than 220 million odour-detecting cels, more than four times than those in humans. This is pretty much known.&nbsp;

But the new research suggests that smell may form much greater part in dog's perception of its surroundings than thought before.

The researchers scanned brains of 23 domestic dogs with the help of a special MRI. They found that connections between regions of the brain that processed smell and vision were especially strong.&nbsp;

"We've never seen this connection between the nose and the occipital lobe, functionally the visual cortex in dogs, in any species," Cornell University neuroimaging researcher Pip Johnson explains. He was quoted by Cornell Chronicle

"It was really consistent. And size-wise, these tracts were really dramatic compared to what is described in the human olfactory system, more like what you'd see in our visual systems."

What this means is that dogs form spatial awareness, a mental picture of surrounding more using their sense of smell like we do using vision.

This perhaps explains why even blind dogs can play a game of fetch.

Dogs may be 'seeing' through smells, says a study

Our existence on this planet is inextricably linked to the millions of species that also call it home. Of them, there are many that made their way into our hearts as pets. Our bonding with pets doesn't need an introduction. From celebrities flaunting their pets to people buying pet-specific accessories, from visiting pet cafes to having pet crematoriums, from crying when a dog dies in a movie to watching cat videos on loop, we undeniably are in love. Animal lovers understand that having a pet is not only a responsibility but a privilege. In a world like this, it is a privilege to have a heart that cares for a voiceless creature. If you have one such, you mustn't wait to read these books about humans' glorious bond with their companion animals. While the ones that are made into movies are already celebrated, I tried to mention those which I felt are underrated.

Felix the Railway Cat by Kate Moore: 
Felix is Huddersfield Station's Senior Pest Controller and Chief Happiness Officer. As the station was yearning for a cat, an employee rescued a pregnant cat which eventually birthed Felix. First mistaken to be a male, Felix won the hearts of all the employees of the station, including those who didn't have an affinity to cats. Workplaces of Tata, Amazon, and Google have made headlines for bringing dogs to the office because, why not?

The book describes Felix's growth, her skills, naughtiness, tricks, achievements, and most importantly, her relationship with the staff and commuters of the station. It is when a regular commuter creates a Facebook page that Felix rose to fame.

The author writes about Felix with immense empathy and vivid descriptions, as though she is writing about one of us. The second reason I love this book is the way it is narrated, with the right amount of wit, emotion, and seriousness. The first reason is apparently the cover.

Wild and Wilful by Neha Sinha 
This is undoubtedly my favourite Indian book about animals so far. Neha Sinha, a wildlife conservationist talks about select rare Indian species of animals in detail, her work with them, and the bias she faced as a woman close to wildlife. Neha and her fellow women are met with judging looks when they work with wild animals, more so in villages.

While giving the scientific information, Neha also adds a humane angle to the whole human-animal conflict. She talks about animals with empathy and kindness. The book covers various aspects ranging from laws and policies on paper to the ground reality that tribal and rural people have to face. It constantly reiterates that wild animals are living things that have feelings. Neha also talks to fellow conservationists and researchers to bring out the facts and curb the myths about so-called cruel animals. 
We need more people to read, write and be like her to save animals because it is already too late.

The Traveling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa 
It is only a coincidence that I read this book during a long travel.

Found under Satoru's car, Nana didn't take much time to get into his house. Having lost his fond cat Hachi as a kid Satoru dotes over Nana. However, circumstances compel Satoru to give Nana up for adoption. Thus begins their long journey from one city to another, from van to train, requesting quite a few of his friends to adopt Nana. At each stage, we meet Satoru's friends and the various instances that shaped his life. None of the adoptions worked. During the journey, Nana experiences new places, new friends and of course, some troubles. He is smart enough to know what is going on and stubborn enough to not leave Satoru's side ever. What persuades Satoru to give up the apple of his eye and how their journey culminates is for you to read.

As we see shelters overflowing with recklessly abandoned pets, it is heartwarming to read about someone take this commitment. This story depicts how our pets are going to be with us and they should be, no matter what. Reading Nana's point of view felt like communicating with animals, which we normally can't do. That is what makes the story extremely personal. Through Nana, the author presents the thoughts of our pets - about us, about other animals, about life and the world in general. They think much more than they show. They understand what we don't tell.

Nana talks to us, questions us, makes us laugh, cry, wonder and think. If it had such profound impact on me, a dog person who never had a cat, I can only imagine how touching it will leave cat owners.

A dog's life: The Autobiography of a Stray by Ann. M Martin 
For someone who fosters the dogs of her street, this book is a gift. In my opinion, it is the best description of the life of a stray. 
The story, as the name suggests, is the autobiography of a puppy born as a nobody. The author takes us through the stormy life that leads her way home. However, there are bleak chances of strays finding loving homes, in real life.

Our protagonist is named Squirrel. Squirrel and Bone are born in an abandoned toolshed. Before they could learn the essential survival skills, they lost their mother. Squirrel is later seperated from Bone too. Thereon, she fights everyday for her survival.

Considering how the author breathes life into Squirrel, it isn't a surprise that she owns a dog and cats. It is vital to remember that the dog may be fictional but the story is not. Every dog we see on the road is as helpless and disadvantaged as Squirrel. In multiple incidents, the author shows how humans let down the man's best friend. It is a must-read for people working with dog shelters or in an individual capacity.

Laika's Window by Kurt Caswell 
Once an anonymous mongrel on the streets of Moscow, Laika is now immortalised. To say that she sacrificed her life would be an understatement. It is a joy that sending animals to space is banned now. What happened to Laika is unfair, to say the least.

The author, through poetic and empathetic descriptions, writes what Laika might have gone through during the grueling process. Did she know that she was being sent on a one-way mission? Did she understand why she was being subjected to unbearable torture? When she looked out of the window of her spacecraft, what did she see?

This book depicts how an innocent little girl lost in the space war between two countries and suffered in the name of science. It was a tough read for me, contemplating how we claim to love dogs yet are willing to let them die so that we explore the cosmos. I appreciate that the author concerned enough about Laika to present the whole event from her point of view. Reading this is sure to leave one in thought, for we have known Laika merely as a dog that died in space; never as a living thing that suffered till the very end.

Our bonding with pets doesn't need an introduction. From celebrities flaunting their pets to people buying pet-specific accessories, from visiting pet cafes to having pet crematoriums, from crying when a dog dies in a movie to watching cat videos on loop, we undeniably are in love. Animal lovers understand that having a pet is not only a responsibility but a privilege. In a world like this, it is a privilege to have a heart that cares for a voiceless creature. If you have one such, you mustn't wait to read these books about humans' glorious bond with their companion animals. While the ones that are made into movies are already celebrated, I tried to mention those which I felt are underrated. Felix the Railway Cat by Kate Moore: Felix is Huddersfield Station's Senior Pest Controller and Chief Happiness Officer. As the station was yearning for a cat, an employee rescued a pregnant cat which eventually birthed Felix. First mistaken to be a male, Felix won the hearts of all the employees of the station, including those who didn't have an affinity to cats. Workplaces of Tata, Amazon, and Google have made headlines for bringing dogs to the office because, why not? The book describes Felix's growth, her skills, naughtiness, tricks, achievements, and most importantly, her relationship with the staff and commuters of the station. It is when a regular commuter creates a Facebook page that Felix rose to fame. The author writes about Felix with immense empathy and vivid descriptions, as though she is writing about one of us. The second reason I love this book is the way it is narrated, with the right amount of wit, emotion, and seriousness. The first reason is apparently the cover. Wild and Wilful by Neha Sinha This is undoubtedly my favourite Indian book about animals so far. Neha Sinha, a wildlife conservationist talks about select rare Indian species of animals in detail, her work with them, and the bias she faced as a woman close to wildlife. Neha and her fellow women are met with judging looks when they work with wild animals, more so in villages. While giving the scientific information, Neha also adds a humane angle to the whole human-animal conflict. She talks about animals with empathy and kindness. The book covers various aspects ranging from laws and policies on paper to the ground reality that tribal and rural people have to face. It constantly reiterates that wild animals are living things that have feelings. Neha also talks to fellow conservationists and researchers to bring out the facts and curb the myths about so-called cruel animals. We need more people to read, write and be like her to save animals because it is already too late. The Traveling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa It is only a coincidence that I read this book during a long travel. Found under Satoru's car, Nana didn't take much time to get into his house. Having lost his fond cat Hachi as a kid Satoru dotes over Nana. However, circumstances compel Satoru to give Nana up for adoption. Thus begins their long journey from one city to another, from van to train, requesting quite a few of his friends to adopt Nana. At each stage, we meet Satoru's friends and the various instances that shaped his life. None of the adoptions worked. During the journey, Nana experiences new places, new friends and of course, some troubles. He is smart enough to know what is going on and stubborn enough to not leave Satoru's side ever. What persuades Satoru to give up the apple of his eye and how their journey culminates is for you to read. As we see shelters overflowing with recklessly abandoned pets, it is heartwarming to read about someone take this commitment. This story depicts how our pets are going to be with us and they should be, no matter what. Reading Nana's point of view felt like communicating with animals, which we normally can't do. That is what makes the story extremely personal. Through Nana, the author presents the thoughts of our pets - about us, about other animals, about life and the world in general. They think much more than they show. They understand what we don't tell. Nana talks to us, questions us, makes us laugh, cry, wonder and think. If it had such profound impact on me, a dog person who never had a cat, I can only imagine how touching it will leave cat owners. A dog's life: The Autobiography of a Stray by Ann. M Martin For someone who fosters the dogs of her street, this book is a gift. In my opinion, it is the best description of the life of a stray. The story, as the name suggests, is the autobiography of a puppy born as a nobody. The author takes us through the stormy life that leads her way home. However, there are bleak chances of strays finding loving homes, in real life. Our protagonist is named Squirrel. Squirrel and Bone are born in an abandoned toolshed. Before they could learn the essential survival skills, they lost their mother. Squirrel is later seperated from Bone too. Thereon, she fights everyday for her survival. Considering how the author breathes life into Squirrel, it isn't a surprise that she owns a dog and cats. It is vital to remember that the dog may be fictional but the story is not. Every dog we see on the road is as helpless and disadvantaged as Squirrel. In multiple incidents, the author shows how humans let down the man's best friend. It is a must-read for people working with dog shelters or in an individual capacity. Laika's Window by Kurt Caswell Once an anonymous mongrel on the streets of Moscow, Laika is now immortalised. To say that she sacrificed her life would be an understatement. It is a joy that sending animals to space is banned now. What happened to Laika is unfair, to say the least. The author, through poetic and empathetic descriptions, writes what Laika might have gone through during the grueling process. Did she know that she was being sent on a one-way mission? Did she understand why she was being subjected to unbearable torture? When she looked out of the window of her spacecraft, what did she see? This book depicts how an innocent little girl lost in the space war between two countries and suffered in the name of science. It was a tough read for me, contemplating how we claim to love dogs yet are willing to let them die so that we explore the cosmos. I appreciate that the author concerned enough about Laika to present the whole event from her point of view. Reading this is sure to leave one in thought, for we have known Laika merely as a dog that died in space; never as a living thing that suffered till the very end. A 12-week-old Bichon Frise cross puppy named Daisy had emergency surgery after x-rays revealed that she had swallowed 20 coins from the missing purse of her owner. The puppy was taken to the vet after she stopped eating adequately and started vomiting multiple times, reported The Guardian.

"I couldn't believe it when PDSA rang to tell me Daisy had swallowed so many coins. My purse had been missing, and we'd searched high and low for it, not thinking it was Daisy who was the culprit who ran off with it," the Guardian quoted Daisy's owner, Ivana from Derby.

X-rays conducted revealed shocking images which showed that the puppy had swallowed a variety of coins, including three 1ps, three 5ps, two 20ps, and two £1 coins, summing up a total of £2.68.

Vet nurse Sally Frith, who works at Derby PDSA Pet hospital, told The Guardian, "Daisy has broken a new record; we couldn't believe the number of coins she'd managed to eat, especially for such a tiny puppy."

"The coins had been causing a blockage which, if left, could have been fatal, so it's a good job her owner brought her into PDSA when she did."

UK's leading vet charity, PDSA, said that Daisy was examined, and vets could identify that her stomach was the cause of her pain. This raised suspicions of a blockage, so she was sedated and then X-rayed to gather conclusive results.

"I had no idea a puppy would even eat this sort of thing, and we were all beside ourselves with worry and so scared we might lose her. My four-year-old daughter is best friends with Daisy, and she was very upset," Daisy's owner, Ivana, added.

The PDSA claimed that Daisy's surgery was successfully completed and that she was sent back home with painkillers and antibiotics on the following day.

"Daisy has been back for check-ups, and we're pleased she's recovering and healing well," Vet nurse Sally Frith added.
