<p>According to the research published in BMJ on Monday, people with COVID-19 tend to give off a particular odour. And that’s a dead giveaway to dogs, who possess a super sense of smell.</p>

<p>The study, which has not been peer-reviewed yet found that dogs were successfully able to detect coronavirus on clothes worn by those infected with 94.3 per cent sensitivity.&nbsp;This is way higher than the sensitivity shown by lateral flow tests at 58-77 per cent. PCR tests are more effective with 97.2 per cent sensitivity to infections.</p>

<p>But as opposed to PCR tests which can take hours to make the diagnosis, dogs were able to sniff out virus in less than a second.</p>

<p>“This includes people who are asymptomatic and also people with a low viral load,” The Guardian quoted Professor James Logan of LSHTM, who co-led the study as saying.</p>

<p>The dogs employed in the daunting task of sniffing out Covid came from a charity called “Medical Detection Dogs” which was formed in 2008. The charity undertakes training of companion dogs that can successfully detect odour changes in people in people that develop diabetes and other ailments.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The dog’s response can help them seek care early which can save many lives. The charity also researches the ability of dogs to sniff out cancers and Parkinson’s, among many diseases. During the onset of the pandemic, the charity had completed a study with the London School of Hygiene &amp; Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), showing that malaria can be effectively detected by dogs.</p>

<p>More importantly, the mistreatment of pets will be criminalised. So hurting a pet will be considered the same as hurting a human and you could even get compensated if your pet is hurt. The proposal calls it damages for a moral injury.</p>

American Kennel Club releases list of most popular dog breeds of 2020 

<p>All pet parents love to post images and videos of their four-legged, furry pets on social media platforms. There is also no doubt that people love to look at these cute images too.</p>

<p>However, now the UK police department has warned pet parents against posting pictures and videos of their pets.</p>

<p>"The advice I would give from a police perspective is be aware of social media," Det Supt Neil Austin from the National Police Chiefs’ Council’s acquisitive crime unit cautioned.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"People share pictures of their dogs and puppies on social media and very often haven’t got their privacy settings set correctly, and they use tags which obviously show where you live which is something to be aware of," Austin added.</p>

<p>This warning has come after a surge in the theft of puppies was observed. DogLost, a UK charity that helps pet parents locate their stolen dogs, recorded an alarming increase of 170 per cent of crime against dogs.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The number increased from 172 dogs in 2019 to 465 dogs in 2020. "Last March, due to lockdown, lots of people thought that this would be the best time to introduce a dog to the family. <p>Humans are thought to have migrated to North America from Siberia over what is today the Bering Strait at the end of the last Ice Age -- between 30,000 and 11,000 years ago.</p>

<p>A new study led by the University at Buffalo analysed the mitochondrial DNA of a bone fragment found in Southeast Alaska.</p>

<p>The team initially thought the fragment belonged to a bear.</p>

<p>But closer examination revealed it to be part of a femur of a dog that lived in the region around 10,150 years ago, and that shared a genetic lineage with American dogs that lived before the arrival of European breeds.</p>

<p>"Because dogs are a proxy for human occupation, our data help provide not only a timing but also a location for the entry of dogs and people into the Americas," said Charlotte Lindqvist, an evolutionary biologist from the University at Buffalo and the University of South Dakota.</p>

<p>She said the findings, published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, supports the theory that humans arrived in North America from Siberia.</p>

<p>"Southeast Alaska might have served as an ice-free stopping point of sorts, and now -- with our dog -- we think that early human migration through the region might be much more important than some previously suspected," said Lindqvist.</p>

<p>It is often said and believed that a dog is man's best friend. The saying may or may not be true, but a recent study by some scientists from the UK has shown that a dog is definitely man's oldest best friend.</p>

<p>A study of dog DNA was conducted at the&nbsp;Ancient Genomics laboratory at London's Crick Institute. This study revealed that the dogs have been domesticated since the end of the last age, which is nearly&nbsp;11,000 years ago. This claim has also proved that dogs were the first animal to be domesticated by human beings.</p>

<p>Greger Larson, author and Director of the Palaeogenomics and Bio-Archaeology Research Network at the University of Oxford, says: "Dogs are our oldest and closest animal partner. Using DNA from ancient dogs is showing us just how far back our shared history goes and will ultimately help us understand when and where this deep relationship began."</p>

<p>The study was conducted by leading scientists at the Francis Crick Institute, University of Oxford, University of Vienna and archaeologists from more than 10 countries and was published in the Science journal on Thursday. In this research oh ancient genomes, scientists extracted and analysed DNA from skeletal material.</p>

<p>Dr Pontus Skoglund, co-author of the study and group leader of the Ancient Genomics laboratory at London's Crick Institute, told BBC News: "Dogs are really unique in being this quite strange thing if you think about it when all people were still hunter gatherers, they domesticate what is really a wild carnivore - wolves are pretty frightening in many parts of the world.</p>

<p>"The question of why did people do that? How did that come about? That's what we're ultimately interested in."</p>

<p>The research also revealed that the genetic patterns of dogs were almost similar to that of humans, to some extent. The reason behind this may be that humans were accompanied by their domesticated dogs wherever they moved and shifted. However, differences do exist.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It was also observed that the diversity of dogs that exists today is mainly from the time period when human beings were hunter and gatherers as the dogs were widespread across the Northern Hemisphere by the end of the Ice Age.&nbsp;"Some of the variation you see between dogs walking down the street today originated in the Ice Age. By the end of this period, dogs were already widespread across the northern hemisphere,"&nbsp; Skoglund said.</p>

<p>One thing that the scientists have not been able to figure out is the lack of similarity between human and dog diversity in some cases. The diversity in European countries was diminished by one dog, but the same was nor mirrored in human beings.</p>

<p>"Just as ancient DNA has revolutionised the study of our own ancestors, it's now starting to do the same for dogs and other domesticated animals. Studying our animal companions adds another layer to our understanding of human history."</p>

<p>The researchers have not closed the study, for now, as they still aim to find out where and in which human cultural context, dogs were first domesticated.</p>

With limited options and red-tape limitations, Zoe turned towards social media and posted a message looki ng for people flying east to west coast in the US to help the family out. Upon reading the post, Melissa Young, who works for dog rescue foundation The Sparky Foundation, stepped in and helped Pip flew from Greensboro to Charlotte, North Carolina, and then from Charlotte to Los Angeles with Pip under her seat. From there, Pip travelled solo from Los Angeles to Auckland through Jetpets. Upon reaching Auckland, Pip was quarantined for a night and was flown out to Melbourne the next day, where she was quarantined for 10 days, as per the rules of the state. Pip was then taken by Zoe's brother, who resides in Melbourne. However, Pip's social media popularity came to her rescue as Virgin Australia contacteed the family and agreed to fly Pip home. "Our greatest fear was that she wouldn't remember us after all that time. My kids were so worried that they got a hotdog and rubbed it on their hands. And then this tiny dog walks out through the hangar, strutting along. When she heard our voices, she came barreling into our arms. It was absolutely amazing to have her back after all that time," Zoe said. "I'm conscious that she's a dog, but we think of ourselves as a bit of a crew," said Zoe. "Living on a boat you really have to work together. And even though she just lazed about and didn't really do anything, we still consider her a member of our crew." The family has now put their docked yacht, called No Plans Just Options, on market for sale. However, the family hopes to sail again soon. "It's been a really lovely story to be a part of. Especially during a pretty horrific time in the world for most people," Zoe said.
