<p>The emergency services said that they were called on Thursday (September 14) that a man was left with critical wounds after being attacked by two dogs near Birmingham.</p>

<p>"Upon arrival, we found a man who had sustained multiple life-threatening injuries and was in a critical condition," said the West Midlands Ambulance Service.</p>

<p>"Unfortunately, after arrival at hospital, despite the best efforts it became clear that nothing more could be done to save him (and) he was confirmed deceased."</p>

<p>Staffordshire Police released a statement saying that a 30-year-old man was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of having dogs that were dangerously out of control.</p>

<p>Tributes poured in for Kent on social media. People hailed her for her bravery and ultimate sacrifice. During her duty of five years, Kent was a part of eight operations.</p>

<p>The United States sanctioned 17 people and entities in China and Mexico in May this year,&nbsp;for facilitating the creation of counterfeit, fentanyl-laced pills, as the Biden administration works to reduce imports of the lethal substance.</p>

<p>It accused individuals of selling pill press machines and other equipment used to impress counterfeit trade markings onto illegally made tablets, which were frequently laced with fentanyl and bound for the United States.</p>

<p>According to research released&nbsp;earlier this month by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the rate of drug overdose deaths containing the synthetic opioid fentanyl more than quadrupled in the United States between 2016 and 2021.</p>

<p>Fentanyl is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine, and it is increasingly being combined with other illegal substances, frequently with disastrous effects.</p>

<p>New research suggests that dogs are potentially more prone to biting individuals on hotter, sunnier days and during periods of higher air pollution, as reported by the Independent.</p>

<p>The study reveals that the likelihood of dog bites happening under these conditions rises by as much as 11 per cent. Previous studies have indicated a similar correlation between elevated temperatures and increased aggression in humans, as well as higher levels of air pollution being linked to heightened aggression in various species including humans, Rhesus monkeys, rats, and mice.</p>

<p>Led by Clas Linnman and colleagues at Harvard Medical School in the United States, the research team delved into data on dog bites in eight major US&nbsp;cities: Dallas, Houston, Baltimore, Baton Rouge, Chicago, Louisville, Los Angeles, and New York City. The data spanned a significant period from 2009 to 2018, allowing for robust analysis and insights.</p>

<p>The analysis of the extensive dataset yielded compelling results. The researchers discovered a notable increase in dog bite incidence on days with higher UV levels, higher temperatures, and increased levels of ozone. Specifically, dog bites surged by 11 per cent&nbsp;on days with elevated UV levels, 4 per cent&nbsp;on hotter days, and 3 per cent&nbsp;on days with heightened ozone levels. Surprisingly, the study revealed a slight decrease of 1 per cent&nbsp;in dog bite incidence on days with higher levels of rainfall. However, there were no significant changes in dog bite incidence associated with fine particulate matter (PM2.5), an air pollutant commonly linked to adverse health effects in humans.</p>

Additionally, important details about prior interactions between the dog and the bite victim, including familiarity with the dog, were absent from the available data.</p>

<p>As reported by Wales Online, Humphrey,&nbsp;and her partner Cenydd Owen had to postpone campervan vacations with their dogs because Lucy couldn't be away for a couple of nights due to her frequent dialysis treatments.</p>

<p>Instead, they prepared a cookout and took the dogs to Barry's beach.</p>

<h2><strong>Found the perfect kidney donor on the beach</strong></h2>

<p>However, one of their two Dobermans named&nbsp;Indie, began pestering Katie James, 40&nbsp;who was sitting and crocheting in another campervan.</p>

<p>"Indie went over like three times, back and forward to her," Humphrey told the Daily Record.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"She was minding her own business, campervanning on her own. Eventually Cenydd went over to apologise, and we got chatting and invited her over to our barbecue."</p>

<p>When&nbsp;Humphrey&nbsp;noted that she couldn't drink since she was receiving dialysis, the three started talking, and Katie said she had just signed up for the kidney donation&nbsp;register.&nbsp;</p>

<p>She told Humphrey&nbsp;she she'd love to help and donate if possible. "We swapped telephone numbers," said Humphrey&nbsp;"And to be honest I didn't think anything else would come of it."</p>

<p>They were shocked to discover Katie was a perfect match after some blood work and scans.</p>

<p>According to Humphrey, the likelihood of her meeting Katie and then being a match must have been "one in 22 million."</p>

<p>The process began in June 2021, but Humphrey&nbsp;claims that Covid-related backlogs are what delayed the transplant until October 2022.</p>

<p>Due to the kidney's slow "wake-up" time, Humphrey's&nbsp;blood pressure dropped as she recovered. She then had to stay in the hospital for four weeks, but because she was on the same ward as Katie, they got to know one another before Katie was discharged.</p>

<p>Humphrey&nbsp;told Daily Recod: "I’m so grateful for her… I told my partner in 2019 if I didn’t find a transplant within five years it was possible something would happen and I would die. I want this to be a message to other people not to give up hope."</p>

<p>The Woodside Animal Rescue Trust in Plympton, Devon, in the UK, witnessed a bizarre case of alcohol addiction in a dog named Coco, who was brought to the centre&nbsp;along with another dog after their owner passed away.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dogs bring joy to any household they are brought in. Most dogs live for 10-15 years. But a dog in Portugal, at a grand old age of 30, has been named oldest dog ever by the Guinness Book of World Records. The dog, Bobbi, broke the record that stood for nearly a century.</p>

<p>Bobbi lives with Costa family in the village of Conqueiros in Portugal. On February 1, Bobbi was 30 years and 226 days old.</p>

<p>The previous record for oldest living dog was made by Bluey, a dog in Australia who died at the age of 29 years and five months.</p>

<p>Bobbi's age has been validated by Portuguese government's database.</p>

<p>Leonel Costa, Bobbi's owner, was eight years old when Bobbi was born. He told BBC that since the family at the time had too many animals, puppies born along with Bobbi had to be put down.</p>

<p>However, Bobbi escaped.</p>

<p>Leonel and his brothers then hid Bobbi from their parents. The pup was eventually discovered and the family decided to keep it.</p>

The previous record for oldest living dog was made by Bluey, a dog in Australia who died at the age of 29 years and five months. Bobbi's age has been validated by Portuguese government's database. Leonel Costa, Bobbi's owner, was eight years old when Bobbi was born. He told BBC that since the family at the time had too many animals, puppies born along with Bobbi had to be put down. However, Bobbi escaped. Leonel and his brothers then hid Bobbi from their parents. The pup was eventually discovered and the family decided to keep it. <p>A 14-month-old French bulldog, Ralphie, who was surrendered by his at the Niagara SPCA, which is a no-kill shelter located in Niagara Falls, New York, is now being assisted by the shelter in finding his new owners in a very unconventional approach.</p>

<p>In a Facebook ad uploaded for his adoption, the aggressive nature of Ralphie was not hidden by the shelter as they talked about him being a “fire-breathing demon”, a “full jerk”, as well as an adorable 26lb dog.</p>

<p>In the post which received thousands of responses, the shelter accepted that the less desirable characteristics of dogs are generally downplayed in their adoption ads, but added that it was tough a task in the case of Ralphie, hence, they decided to remain brutally honest instead.</p>

<p>“Ralphie is a terror in a somewhat small package. It could be because his previous owners may have spoiled him by giving in to all his whims, and created boundary issues,” the ad stated.</p>

<p>The last owners decided to give up the dog within two weeks of adoption because their older dog was irritated by Ralphie. This time around, the shelter knew what should the ad clearly state.</p>

<p>“Ralphie is a fire-breathing demon and will eat our dog, but hey, he’s only 26lb. Lots of people withheld Ralphie’s less than desirable traits, but we’re going to tell you all about it,” read the ad.</p>

<p>“He’s a whole jerk – not even half. If you show a moment of weakness, prepare to be exploited,” it added. However, people were very pleased by the honesty of the post.</p>

<p>“I’d like to donate toward his adoption fee,” responded one Facebook user to the ad. “I’m bossy and too much for some people too, so he’s a little bit my spirit animal,” the user said.</p>

US: Dog shoots, kills man in Kansas hunting accident

<p>A young woman was mauled to death by a dog in the United Kingdom on Thursday, while another woman who survived the attack was taken to hospital with injuries. Police officers were called to Gravelly Hill in Caterham, Surrey at 2:45 pm GMT following the incident.</p>

<p>Upon arrival, the cops seized seven dogs in total with the help of the National Police Air Service. The dogs are to remain in police custody, The Telegraph reported.</p>

<p>"Our thoughts are with the family of the woman who sadly died this afternoon. This incident will be concerning to the local community and I would like to reassure them that we believe all dogs have been accounted for and are in police custody,” Chief Inspector Alan Sproston said, as per SkyNews.</p>

<p>The woman, believed to be in her twenties, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities haven’t revealed her identity publicly yet, however, her next of kin have been apprised, Surrey Live reported.</p>

Barking a lot, being hyperactive, growling, chasing or even biting doesn't certify that a dog is rabid. Killing dogs in large numbers for the fear of rabies is outright criminal behaviour.</p>

<p>Rabies is vaccine-preventable. The articles and posts that elaborate on how stray dogs are spreading rabies, conveniently ignore this part. Dogs can and should be vaccinated against rabies. Any other means adopted in the name of rabies control is illegal and inhumane.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Killing, relocating or locking up dogs does nought in making India rabies-free. We need a program that includes planning, implementation and review, like for the eradication of any disease. Numerous dogs are tortured and murdered only because they are categorised as "mad dogs" by veterinarians from Whatsapp University. Ask them to define a mad dog and they will list out the qualities of a dog. That's it.</p>

<p><strong>Indie dogs can't be pets:</strong></p>

<p>There is evidence to show that Indie dogs make better pets in reality (not on Instagram, though). It is a no-brainer that Indian dogs are well-suited for the Indian climate so they adjust to any weather condition easily. Their diet, lifestyle and everything that comes from genetics are adapted to living in India. They need hardly any grooming and have excellent natural immunity (that doesn't imply we neglect their health, please). Many people including celebrities have adopted Indies as pets. Each dog is different. Each breed has its own requirements. Adopting an indie dog not only reduces the human-animal conflict but is also an act of kindness and acceptance. While we talk about equality in all spheres all day long, we shun Indie dogs only because they don't look like the ones trending on social media. We are proud of our country's culture, heritage and businesses but our native dogs are met with disgust. They always lose a chance of survival against the furry, expensive, imported dogs.</p>

<p>Talking about imports, several Indian dogs got adopted by families abroad and are living their best life now, in the other half of the world. While it is heartwarming to see their stories, it is a pity and shame that they couldn't find any home in India, the country they were born in.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Indie dogs are dirty:</strong></p>

<p>Anybody would be if they spent their days on the roads. I was told countless times that I shouldn't go closer to the dogs I feed as they may be carrying diseases. It becomes our collective responsibility to get them vaccinated as I said earlier. If we keep our surroundings obnoxiously dirty and filthy, if our roads are home to disease-carrying microorganisms, the dogs are bound to be vulnerable. Is it their mistake that they were born near an odious drain? Is it their choice to carry viruses and bacteria? If anything, we should feel guilty for all the weaker species that are agonized by the pollution we create. The so-called dirty dogs aren't accountable for the state of the planet today; we are. If our definition of 'dirty' insinuates being born in a certain place or in certain conditions, then nothing is dirtier than that mindset.</p>

<p><strong>Indie dogs don't have the qualities that my breeder coaxed me with:</strong></p>

<p>Breeders may have told you that dogs of a particular breed are very good with kids or perfectly suitable for your lifestyle. Now, they have to sell their product because they run a business. They may have heaped praises of their dogs - something which animal rescuers and shelters never did. Because, for us, dogs aren't products. They are family. At the outset, one may feel that buying a dog is better than adoption because the breeder assured them of a "superior quality". But, what is an inferior quality dog? Are we talking about buying a refrigerator or a laptop? If you still believe that a breeder is doing a great service to the animal world, please ask them how many times they impregnate each female dog. Where are their old dogs, especially females, that can't make puppies anymore? If your breeder is an "ethical" one, why does he promote one breed of dogs over the others? We read multiple reviews and interview a few friends before going to eat at a particular place or watch a particular movie. If only we did the same amount of research before buying a dog.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Indie dogs should be left outside the city by the municipality:</strong></p>

<p>And then? What? Internet is rife with people demanding that their local municipality relocate their dogs and leave them 'outside.' Firstly, it is illegal to relocate a dog in India. Yes, you read it right. You can't grab a street dog on the road and push it outside. Outside what? If we leave all the dogs from our high-class communities outside the city, would it be any fair towards the people living in the suburbs? This is a typical classist attitude - not caring about the problems others might face due to one's privilege. Imagine waking up to find ten befuddled dogs outside your house because some Richie Rich pushed out the dogs from their area. That is what happens due to the relocation of dogs. Leaving dogs in another area, wherever it is, increases the dog population of that area tremendously. The bigger problem is that these dogs are territorial in nature. They fight aggressively with the inhabitant dogs there, for space and survival. Relocating dogs out of your community doesn't solve anything. It only displays people's self-centrism and gross dearth of civic sense.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>People shouldn't be feeding indie dogs:</strong></p>

<p>Again, this is illegal. You cannot legally stop, threaten or harass a person caring for street dogs in India.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Anyone who reads the news knows that feeders are beaten, their belongings damaged and their families mentally harassed - all because they want to give the dogs one square meal a day. You may have seen the fights between feeders and abusers dragged to the high courts and the supreme court (unless your news source is your WhatsApp groups). In a country with this level of hatred towards an animal, adoption seems to be a distant dream. If people are willing to go to court only to stop a dog from eating food, do we have any hope left? Our courts have ruled time and again that street dogs have the right to live. The most recent order talks about five fundamental freedoms every animal is entitled to. Still, the cases of abuse of dog feeders and frivolous petitions to restrict feeding don't seem to end - unwarranted additions to the lakhs of issues pending already. Every person has not only liberty but a fundamental duty to be kind to animals. Denying them the right to do so is an insult to the values our country prides itself in - peace and non-violence.</p>

The articles and posts that elaborate on how stray dogs are spreading rabies, conveniently ignore this part. Dogs can and should be vaccinated against rabies. Any other means adopted in the name of rabies control is illegal and inhumane. Killing, relocating or locking up dogs does nought in making India rabies-free. We need a program that includes planning, implementation and review, like for the eradication of any disease. Numerous dogs are tortured and murdered only because they are categorised as "mad dogs" by veterinarians from Whatsapp University. Ask them to define a mad dog and they will list out the qualities of a dog. That's it. Indie dogs can't be pets: There is evidence to show that Indie dogs make better pets in reality (not on Instagram, though). It is a no-brainer that Indian dogs are well-suited for the Indian climate so they adjust to any weather condition easily. Their diet, lifestyle and everything that comes from genetics are adapted to living in India. They need hardly any grooming and have excellent natural immunity (that doesn't imply we neglect their health, please). Many people including celebrities have adopted Indies as pets. Each dog is different. Each breed has its own requirements. Adopting an indie dog not only reduces the human-animal conflict but is also an act of kindness and acceptance. While we talk about equality in all spheres all day long, we shun Indie dogs only because they don't look like the ones trending on social media. We are proud of our country's culture, heritage and businesses but our native dogs are met with disgust. They always lose a chance of survival against the furry, expensive, imported dogs. Talking about imports, several Indian dogs got adopted by families abroad and are living their best life now, in the other half of the world. While it is heartwarming to see their stories, it is a pity and shame that they couldn't find any home in India, the country they were born in. Indie dogs are dirty: Anybody would be if they spent their days on the roads. I was told countless times that I shouldn't go closer to the dogs I feed as they may be carrying diseases. It becomes our collective responsibility to get them vaccinated as I said earlier. If we keep our surroundings obnoxiously dirty and filthy, if our roads are home to disease-carrying microorganisms, the dogs are bound to be vulnerable. Is it their mistake that they were born near an odious drain? Is it their choice to carry viruses and bacteria? If anything, we should feel guilty for all the weaker species that are agonized by the pollution we create. The so-called dirty dogs aren't accountable for the state of the planet today; we are. If our definition of 'dirty' insinuates being born in a certain place or in certain conditions, then nothing is dirtier than that mindset. Indie dogs don't have the qualities that my breeder coaxed me with: Breeders may have told you that dogs of a particular breed are very good with kids or perfectly suitable for your lifestyle. Now, they have to sell their product because they run a business. They may have heaped praises of their dogs - something which animal rescuers and shelters never did. Because, for us, dogs aren't products. They are family. At the outset, one may feel that buying a dog is better than adoption because the breeder assured them of a "superior quality". But, what is an inferior quality dog? Are we talking about buying a refrigerator or a laptop? If you still believe that a breeder is doing a great service to the animal world, please ask them how many times they impregnate each female dog. Where are their old dogs, especially females, that can't make puppies anymore? If your breeder is an "ethical" one, why does he promote one breed of dogs over the others? We read multiple reviews and interview a few friends before going to eat at a particular place or watch a particular movie. If only we did the same amount of research before buying a dog. Indie dogs should be left outside the city by the municipality: And then? What? Internet is rife with people demanding that their local municipality relocate their dogs and leave them 'outside.' Firstly, it is illegal to relocate a dog in India. Yes, you read it right. You can't grab a street dog on the road and push it outside. Outside what? If we leave all the dogs from our high-class communities outside the city, would it be any fair towards the people living in the suburbs? This is a typical classist attitude - not caring about the problems others might face due to one's privilege. Imagine waking up to find ten befuddled dogs outside your house because some Richie Rich pushed out the dogs from their area. That is what happens due to the relocation of dogs. Leaving dogs in another area, wherever it is, increases the dog population of that area tremendously. The bigger problem is that these dogs are territorial in nature. They fight aggressively with the inhabitant dogs there, for space and survival. Relocating dogs out of your community doesn't solve anything. It only displays people's self-centrism and gross dearth of civic sense. People shouldn't be feeding indie dogs: Again, this is illegal. You cannot legally stop, threaten or harass a person caring for street dogs in India. Anyone who reads the news knows that feeders are beaten, their belongings damaged and their families mentally harassed - all because they want to give the dogs one square meal a day. You may have seen the fights between feeders and abusers dragged to the high courts and the supreme court (unless your news source is your WhatsApp groups). In a country with this level of hatred towards an animal, adoption seems to be a distant dream. If people are willing to go to court only to stop a dog from eating food, do we have any hope left? Our courts have ruled time and again that street dogs have the right to live. The most recent order talks about five fundamental freedoms every animal is entitled to. Still, the cases of abuse of dog feeders and frivolous petitions to restrict feeding don't seem to end - unwarranted additions to the lakhs of issues pending already. Every person has not only liberty but a fundamental duty to be kind to animals. Denying them the right to do so is an insult to the values our country prides itself in - peace and non-violence.
