During a briefing in Geneva, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the&nbsp;agency is approving the new malaria vaccine based on the recommendations of two expert groups which suggested its use in children at risk of the disease.

The announcement comes nearly two years after WHO recommended the broad use of the world’s first malaria vaccine RTS,S.

<h2>Second malaria vaccine</h2>

“Today, it gives me great pleasure to announce that WHO is recommending a second vaccine called R21/Matrix-M to prevent malaria in children at risk of the disease,” said Tedros.&nbsp;

R21/Matrix-M – developed by Britain’s University of Oxford and mass manufactured by Serum Institute of India, and uses Novavax’s Matrix M adjuvant – will be available to countries by mid-2024, said the WHO chief.&nbsp;

“As a malaria researcher, I used to dream of the day we would have a safe and effective vaccine against malaria. Now we have two,” said Tedros. The doses would cost between $2 and $4 and have already been approved for use in Burkina Faso, Ghana and Nigeria.

“WHO is now reviewing the vaccine for prequalification, which is WHO stamp of approval, and will enable GAVI (a global vaccine alliance) and UNICEF to buy the vaccine from manufacturers,” said Tedros.&nbsp;

Adar Poonawalla, CEO of Serum Institute of India told Reuters that they have already produced more than 20 million doses in anticipation of WHO’s recommendation and will ramp up production depending on the demand.&nbsp;

The UN health agency has also said that both vaccines have shown similar efficacy in separate trials but have not conducted any head-to-head trials to test which one performed better.&nbsp;

It is now up to the countries to decide which product they will use based on various factors including affordability and supply, said WHO.&nbsp;

<h2>About other vaccines</h2>

The WHO chief also said that the health agency is also recommending Takeda Pharmaceuticals’ Qdenga, a vaccine against dengue for children aged six to 16 years in areas where infection is prevalent.&nbsp;

Takeda’s vaccine was shown in trials to be effective against all four stereotypes of the virus in people who were previously infected by dengue, the chair of WHO’s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization, Hanna Nohynek, told reporters.&nbsp;

The WHO group also recommended a simplified single-dose regime for primary immunisation for most COVID-19 vaccines to improve acceptance of the shots at a time when most people have had at least one prior infection, reported Reuters.

Bangladesh's Directorate General of Health Services on Sunday night released figures that said that 1,006 people had died. There have been more than 20,000 confirmed cases.

The agency's former director Be-Nazir Ahmed said the number of deaths so far this year was higher than every previous year combined since 2000.

"It's a massive health event, both in Bangladesh and in the world," he told AFP on Monday.

The previous highest yearly total of deaths was recorded in 2022. There were 281 deaths in the entire year.

Scientists have blamed irregular rainfall and hotter temperatures during annual monsoon season this year for spike in dengue cases.&nbsp;

"It's not happening only in Bangladesh -- many tropical and sub-tropical countries are experiencing dengue this year," Kabirul Bashar, a zoology professor at Jahangirnagar University in Dhaka, told AFP in September.&nbsp;

He told the news agency that the Aedes mosquito which carries dengue thrives at "an optimum temperature for the multiplication of the virus."

"Global climate change is playing a role in providing this temperature level," he added.

Bangladesh has recorded cases of dengue from the 1960s but documented its first outbreak of dengue haemorrhagic fever, a severe and sometimes fatal symptom of the disease, in 2000.&nbsp;

The Dengue virus has now become endemic to Bangladesh. The country has seen gradually worsening outbreaks since the turn of the century.

The cases usually spike between the months of July and September, the monsoon season.

"When people have dengue for the second, third or fourth time, the severity is increased. The number of deaths are also higher," said Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, a doctor at Dhaka's Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College, as quoted by AFP.

"Many are coming to us when it's already late in their illness," he said. "Then it's really complicated to treat them."

There is no availability of a drug or vaccine which specifically treats dengue, which is a common disease during the June-to-September monsoon season in South Asia as the Aedes aegypti mosquito, responsible for spreading the disease, thrives in stagnant water.

The cases were first reported on the Egyptian television channel, MBC Masr, by prominent journalist Amr Adib, on Saturday, who said that 200 people have been infected by an unidentified disease with symptoms like high fever, headache, fatigue, and stomach pain.

According to Egyptian health officials, patients’ symptoms do not have a uniform pattern and are mild to moderate, therefore do not require hospitalisation. The symptoms, which sometimes include&nbsp;bone pain, lasted between three to five days.

<h2>What could have caused it?</h2>

The Egyptian health ministry, in its statement, also confirmed that its teams from the epidemiological surveillance were sent to investigate the reports and samples were taken from both the patients as well as their environment.&nbsp;

Additionally, they are also using preventive and therapeutic medicine. The Egyptian officials also noted that these symptoms are common to many diseases such as cold and influenza, gastroenteritis and fever, which can spread due to high temperatures.&nbsp;

However, they can disappear with rest, fever reducers, and by keeping yourself hydrated, said the officials, according to the media report.&nbsp;

<h2>Russia takes measures against ‘unidentified disease’</h2>

“In light of the current situation, Rospotrebnadzor has tightened sanitary and quarantine controls with respect to flights from Egypt, including using the Perimeter automated information system,” said the Russian sanitary watchdog, on Monday, as quoted by TASS.&nbsp;

According to the Rospotrebnadzor, symptoms noted by the Egyptian authorities resemble those of dengue fever. The Russian agency also said that they are in contact with Egyptian officials about the situation as well as international organisations to learn about the disease and its risks of trans-border proliferation, and preventive and epidemic measures.

The Russian watchdog also issued an advisory to Russian tourists planning to visit Egypt asking them to wear clothes that “maximally protect the skin,” use mosquito repellents, and put mosquito nets over doors and windows to avoid getting insect-borne infectious and parasitic diseases.&nbsp;

Dengue fever is caused by the dengue virus, which is transmitted via Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, the Rospotrebnadzor noted. It added dengue fever cannot be caught from being close to an infected person, it can be contracted only from the bite of an infected mosquito.&nbsp;

Understand: To defeat any epidemic or outbreak, we must first understand what we are dealing with.&nbsp;

Dengue is a viral infection that is usually transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes or, to a lesser extent, Ae. albopictus. These mosquitoes can bite throughout the day, both indoors as well as outdoors.

Meanwhile, malaria is another life-threatening mosquito-borne blood disease that is transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes. They transmit a parasite known as plasmodium to humans, which causes fever, chills, and headaches.

Find: The second step is to find the breeding sites and prevent mosquitoes from accessing egg-laying habitats. Since mosquitoes prefer to lay eggs in clean stagnant water, you must clean water containers, open storage tanks, drain plant or flower pots and discard objects where water can get accumulated.

Clean: Once you have identified these breeding places, start the cleaning process. After discarding the water, clean the containers and leave them outside in the sun for a few hours. Cover your water tanks, containers and utensils with a lid. Also, ensure that there the drains are not clogged and water is flowing freely.

"To cure dengue and malaria fever, one must increase their fluid intake. You can take paracetamol for fever but do not take painkillers like NSAIDs. You should follow the advice given by your physician," said Dr Wasim.

Grace Fu announced expansion of the project at Asia Dengue Summit in Singapore.

“Dengue and other mosquito-borne viruses are no longer just a problem of the tropics. Unconfined by borders or socioeconomic lines, they will challenge communities around the world,” she said.

In Singapore, there have been 1400 cases of dengue fever this year. Surge in cases has been seen in March. This is earlier than usual dengue season from June to October.

Singapore to unleash lab-grown mosquitoes to tackle growing cases of dengue

According to a civic report released on Monday (June 13), in India, a total of 126 dengue cases have been reported so far this year. However, no deaths have been linked to the vector-borne sickness, the report said. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) said 118 dengue cases had been reported in the city as of June 6 and fifteen were reported on June 11. The data stated that Delhi had 23 dengue cases in the month of&nbsp;January, 16 in February, and 22 in March. April and May saw 20 and 30 cases respectively, PTI reported.&nbsp;

Vector-borne diseases are most likely to spread between July and November but might last until mid-December. The civic officials said that this year, dengue cases are being reported early this year due to favourable weather for the mosquito reproduction.&nbsp;

While dengue season is coming to an end, the demand further increased because of a new variant of Covid-19 for which Paracetamol was prescribed to almost every patient.

Pakistan is currently facing the fifth COVID-19 wave and the number of active cases across the country has crossed the 100,000 mark.

Zika virus in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh: Number of cases climbs to 10

The East Delhi Municipal Corporation has intensified its drive to combat dengue, and a new awareness campaign via radio stations will be set in motion from Monday, officials said.

Over 480 cases of dengue have been reported in the national capital this season, including more than 140 in October, according to data shared by civic bodies.

Over 80 cases of dengue, 20 of malaria and two of chikungunya have been logged in areas falling under the EDMC's jurisdiction.

Besides, our dengue breeding checking (DBC) staff are going from house to house to check any breeding of dengue mosquitoes to prevent its spread, he said, and claimed that the staff has visited nearly 40 lakh households till date.

Cases of vector-borne diseases are usually reported between July and November, but the period may stretch till mid-December.

A senior official said a message in the voice of the mayor on precautions to be taken at home has been already recorded, and the EDMC has partnered with multiple private radio stations which will play it to raise awareness.

"The radio campaign is ready, and it will be launched tomorrow. People will get to hear the message on the airwaves either from tomorrow or the day after," he said.

Aggarwal said as part of the EDMC's intensive drive to combat dengue, fogging and disinfection exercise have been carried out at various police stations.

Of the total count of dengue cases in Delhi this year, nearly 140 have been reported this month till October 9. However, no deaths have been reported due to dengue in the city this year till now.

In September this season, 217 cases were logged in the city, the highest for this month in the last three years.

Last year, 188 dengue cases were reported in September, and 190 in 2019. In preceding years, the corresponding figures were 374 (2018), 1,103 (2017), 1,362 (2016) and 6,775 (2015), according to data shared by Delhi health department on September 22.

The month-wise distribution of dengue cases reported this year -- January (0), February (2), March (5), April (10) and May (12), June (7), July (16) and August (72).

EDMC anti-dengue campaign via radio stations to start from tomorrow: Official

India's former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh was diagnosed with dengue at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), in New Delhi. The hospital said that his condition was improving.

"He has been diagnosed with dengue but his platelet count is now increasing and his condition is improving," an AIIMS official said Saturday.

A massive anti-dengue virus campaign has been launched in Islamabad to deal with the alarmingly high rate of cases being reported in the city.

Meanwhile, the Punjab government has declared a medical emergency at the public health facilities in Lahore due to the rising number of dengue cases.

The decision was made in a meeting chaired by the Punjab Health Minister Yasmeen Rashid, which looked into the challenge of preventing the rapid breeding of mosquitoes in the province and expressed concern over the possible deterioration of the dengue situation in the coming weeks.

The findings of the survey by Local Circles also indicate that 22 per cent of Delhi households are fully impacted with it, which means all members are having such symptoms while 19 per cent have only 1 member so far and it is likely that more members may develop symptoms in the days to come. 
 
However, 59 per cent of citizens have indicated that they do not have anyone in their households with the flu-like symptoms, the survey said. 
 
Many Delhi residents in the last 7 days have reported that one or more members in their family are struggling with Covid-like symptoms i.e. fever, runny nose, fatigue. 
 
Many are also getting a RT-PCR test done only to find later post doctor consultation that they are Covid-negative and had gotten under the influence of some kind of viral infection or seasonal flu.

41% households in Delhi report flu-like symptoms: Survey
