Delhi is reportedly exploring another round of artificial rain to tackle worsening air pollution, with the government prepared to consider cloud seeding if air quality deteriorates further after Diwali and Chhath Puja. The national capital recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 367 on Thursday, placing it in the ‘very poor’ category. Several neighbourhoods reported severe pollution levels, with Jahangirpuri recording an AQI of 459. IIT Delhi and Punjabi Bagh followed at 445 each.PM2.5 remained the dominant pollutant, while a thick layer of smog reduced visibility and sunlight across the city. Residents also reported respiratory discomfort as the haze engulfed prominent landmarks, including India Gate.
Two cloud-seeding trials conducted
According to an NDTV report, citing sources, the Delhi government has already conducted two artificial rain trials over the past 15 days as part of efforts to bring down pollution levels. One of these trials was carried out near Delhi Airport. The latest experiments involved cloud seeding at an altitude of around 30,000 metres, compared with approximately 10,000 metres during trials last year.Cloud seeding involves introducing substances such as silver iodide and dry ice into suitable clouds to encourage rainfall or snowfall. The process can be carried out using aircraft, rockets or ground-based equipment. While rainfall can temporarily bring down airborne pollutants, experts caution that the technique cannot address the underlying causes of pollution.
Firecracker restrictions and GRAP curbs
The Supreme Court has permitted the use of certified green firecrackers in Delhi-NCR on November 7 and 8, with restrictions on bursting them between 6 am to 7 am and 8 pm to 10 pm. A complete ban will return on November 9.Meanwhile, Stage II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) is in force across Delhi-NCR. Measures include restrictions on construction activities, curbs on diesel generators, higher parking charges, mechanised road cleaning and increased public transport services.

Toxic morning: Delhi wakes up to ‘hazardous’ 482 AQI as severe smog grips capital

Delhi's air pollution crisis is intensifying, with the capital's AQI entering the 'Very Poor' category and several monitoring stations recording 'Severe' levels. As GRAP Stage II restrictions come into force across Delhi-NCR, a political blame game has erupted between the BJP-led Delhi government and the AAP-led Punjab government over stubble burning. Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa has accused Punjab of allowing farm fires, while Punjab leaders have hit back, accusing Delhi of failing to tackle its own pollution sources.

Delhi pollution: Blame game begins over Indian capital's worsening air quality

The Supreme Court has raised concerns over air pollution and public health while considering the use of green crackers in India. The court emphasised that even environmentally friendly firecrackers must be subject to strict conditions to minimise their impact on air quality and people's health. The discussion brings renewed focus on pollution control, firecracker regulations and the balance between festive celebrations and environmental protection. Here's what the court said about the use of green crackers and the conditions surrounding them.

New Delhi’s air quality slipped into the “poor” category on Thursday, October 22, as a layer of haze covered the capital. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 226, well above the good AQI range of 0–50. Authorities implemented Stage 1 measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), including restrictions on coal and firewood use. Vehicle emissions, construction dust, and crop burning in neighbouring states continue to contribute to pollution, while winter conditions trap pollutants close to the ground, raising concerns over Delhi’s worsening air quality.

Delhi air quality worsens: Tougher pollution rules from November 1

Delhi’s air quality deteriorated to the ‘Poor’ category on Wednesday (October 21), prompting authorities to enforce the first stage of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across the National Capital Region. The move comes as haze returns to the capital ahead of the winter pollution season, when falling temperatures and unfavourable weather conditions can make it harder for pollutants to disperse.
AQI climbs sharply in a day
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) invoked Stage I after Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) climbed to 244 at 2 pm on October 21, compared with 179 a day earlier, when air quality was classified as ‘Moderate’.The deterioration follows Dussehra celebrations, with stubble burning in neighbouring states emerging as another concern as the winter season approaches. Weather conditions that trap pollutants close to the ground could further aggravate the situation.Forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology suggest that air quality is likely to remain in the ‘Poor’ category over the coming days.
What restrictions come under GRAP Stage I?
Stage I of GRAP applies when the AQI falls between 201 and 300. The measures are intended to prevent pollution from worsening and require government agencies across Delhi-NCR to step up enforcement.Among the restrictions is a ban on coal and firewood in tandoors at hotels, restaurants and open eateries. The use of diesel generator sets is also subject to restrictions under the plan. The CAQM’s GRAP sub-committee has directed agencies to implement the measures immediately and maintain strict vigilance. Residents have also been asked to follow the citizen charter outlining steps to reduce pollution. The directions extend across Delhi and the NCR areas of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Authorities will continue monitoring pollution levels and weather forecasts before deciding whether tougher measures are necessary.
Delhi prepares wider winter action plan
The GRAP restrictions precede the Delhi government’s Winter Action Plan, scheduled to take effect on November 1. The plan targets vehicular emissions, construction dust, industrial pollution and other contributors to seasonal smog.Proposed measures include a “No PUC, No Fuel” policy, denying fuel to vehicles without valid Pollution Under Control certificates. Non-Delhi vehicles that do not meet BS-VI emission standards will also face entry restrictions, subject to exemptions. The government has additionally announced plans for 50 per cent work from home, restrictions on construction activities, tighter dust monitoring and more mechanised road sweeping as the capital prepares for the months when pollution typically intensifies.

Delhi bans non-BS-VI vehicles from November 1 under winter pollution plan

With winter approaching, Delhiites are preparing for pollution and dangerous AQI levels that plague the Indian national capital every year. In an attempt to keep the AQI levels in check, older goods vehicles carrying essential commodities will no longer be exempt from Delhi-NCR's pollution curbs once the two strictest stages of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) are imposed. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has removed the exemption for BS-IV and below vehicles under GRAP Stages III and IV as part of a revised schedule approved by the CAQM Full Commission on Monday. The change means light and medium goods vehicles (LGVs and MGVs) will face restrictions under Stage III, while trucks and heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) will be covered by the stricter Stage IV measures. Also read | Delhi pollution plan: Government announces 50% WFH, higher parking charges from November 1 and construction ban
Older goods vehicles face tighter entry rules
Notably, the restrictions are not entirely new. CAQM had already imposed similar measures through separate orders alongside the GRAP framework last year. Delhi has tightened its winter pollution plan, removing exemptions for older goods vehicles under the strictest GRAP stages. The revised rules also bring forward some curbs on diesel generators and buses as the capital prepares for another season of hazardous air quality.

Delhi's pollution is not Delhi's alone; only about 28 per cent of NCR PM2.5 is estimated to come from local sources. A new Centre for Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP) report argues that roughly one-third of pollutants come from other Indo-Gangetic Plain states, and another third from neighbouring countries. It argues that coordinated action on household fuel use, industry, transport, waste and farm burning could cut PM2.5 levels more effectively than isolated city-level measures. It claims that pollution could not be solved by individual cities acting alone; states across the region must coordinate their policies. The study, “Beyond State Boundaries: Quantifying Interstate Air Pollution Transport and Sectoral Solutions in the Indo-Gangetic Plain”, identifies residential emissions, including the use of solid fuels for cooking and heating, as the largest local contributor, followed by industry, natural and agricultural sources, transport and open burning. Also Read: ‘Slim’ chances of Tarique Rahman’s India visit for BRICS Summit without ‘dignified invitation’The report says that winter air pollution is driven by a combination of emissions and meteorological conditions such as low wind speeds, shallow boundary layers and temperature inversions, which trap pollutants closer to the ground. Crop-residue burning sharply worsens post-monsoon air quality, but a 50 per cent cut in Punjab and Haryana burning delivers about a 5 per cent PM2.5 reduction in Punjab during October-November.CSTEP argues that isolated action by one city, state or sector will produce limited gains. In its combined modelling scenario- 50 per cent cuts in residential, transport, energy, industrial and agricultural-waste-burning emissions, plus a 90 per cent reduction in waste emissions-annual PM2.5 levels fell by about 23 per cent in the NCR, from 67.9 to 52.3 µg per cubic meter. In Punjab, they fell by about 20 per cent, from 77.8 to 62.2 µg per cubic meter. The report recommends an airshed-based approach for the wider Indo-Gangetic Plain. This would involve establishing a Commission for Air Quality Management in the National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas (CAQM), shared regional pollution-reduction targets, aligned enforcement timelines, a common approved-fuel list, coordinated policies on vehicle scrappage and electric vehicles, stronger industrial monitoring, satellite-based tracking of fires, and a high-resolution national emissions inventory.

GRAP-I imposed in Delhi-NCR as AQI in national capital turns ‘poor’ – What you should know

Rain lashed several parts of the national capital on Wednesday (March 18), bringing much-needed relief from a recent spell of rising temperatures and humid conditions. Light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by gusty winds, was reported across different areas of New Delhi, resulting in a noticeable drop in temperatures. Residents experienced cloudy skies and intermittent showers, with some areas also witnessing brief spells of strong winds. Meanwhile, similar weather conditions were observed in parts of Charkhi Dadri in Haryana, where rainfall offered respite to locals from the ongoing heat. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Delhi-NCR is expected to witness a shift in weather over the next 48 hours. On March 19, officials predict generally cloudy skies with initial spells of very light rain or drizzle, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in the forenoon, followed by one or two additional spells of light rain in the afternoon and evening. Strong surface winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph, gusting up to 50 kmph, are also expected. "While a slight rise of 1-2°C in maximum temperatures is expected within the next 24 hours, the Meteorological Department forecasts a gradual and significant fall of 4-6°C over the subsequent three days. Overall, maximum temperatures are expected to hover between 'below normal' (-1.6°C to -3.0°C) and 'normal' levels throughout the coming week," the RMC stated. The weather advisory extends across the entire NCR, including satellite cities such as Noida, Gurgaon, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad. The forecast mirrors the capital's outlook: generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain and thunderstorms likely through March 20. The meteorological department has placed these districts under a 'Yellow' alert, advising residents to remain cautious of lightning and gusty winds, particularly during the evening hours. "This change comes after a relatively warm period for the capital. In the past 24 hours, maximum temperatures across Delhi settled in the range of 32-34°C, which is roughly 1.6°C to 3.0°C above the seasonal normal at several locations. Safdarjung, the city's primary weather station, recorded a high of 33.6°C, while minimum temperatures remained steady between 16-18°C," the RMC further added. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for the day, forecasting a slight drop in temperature. The air quality remained in the "poor" category. On X, the IMD stated, "Orange colour nowcast for north Rajasthan districts for light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds (40-60 kmph) during the next three hours. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Delhi-NCR is expected to witness a shift in weather over the next 48 hours.

A yellow colour alert has been issued for light rainfall over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, and West Madhya Pradesh during the next three hours." Showers bring respite in Delhi; IMD issues yellow alert in the national capital

Delhi has experienced the warmest and the most polluted February in three years. The mercury on Friday stood at 31.9 degrees Celsius, marking six degrees above normal. The unusually warming of national capital on this month is likely due to the absence of active western disturbances. The average maximum temperature in February stood at 27 degrees Celsius (°C), which was 2.8 degrees higher to the long-period average (LPA) of 24.2°C for February. This temperature is considered as the highest from the average maximum since February 2023, during which it was 28.2°C, according to a report in HT. Meanwhile, air quality of Delhi also deteriorated along with the increase in the temperature. So far, the average air quality index (AQI) of February in 2026 stood at 232, marking the highest since it was 237 in 2023. The average AQI of February in 2015 was 214, 218 in 2024, 225 in 2022, 288 in 2021 and 241 in 2020.
Effect of weak western disturbances
Experts linked the recent surge in temperature and pollution to a severe rainfall shortfall. The data of India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that Delhi has received just 0.5mm of rain this month, far below the normal of 21.3mm. Weak western disturbances over the Himalayan region have have led to minimal snowfall in the mountains and little to no rainfall across the plains. “We only saw patchy and isolated drizzle in Delhi on a couple of days. Though the maximum briefly dipped due to overcast skies, it did not lead to any significant cooling,” said Mahesh Palawat, vice-president at Skymet adding that the lack of rainfall also results in rise of pollution levels of Delhi. “If there is a decent spell of rain, pollutants settle due to the washout effect. We did not see this in February," he added. A similar trend occurred in February 2025, when the average maximum temperature reached 26.7°C and rainfall was just 1.4 mm. By comparison, February 2024 recorded 32.5 mm of rain, which kept the average high at a lower 24.4°C and supported relatively improved air quality. In 2023, Delhi experienced no rainfall at all, with the average maximum temperature climbing to 28.2°C, the highest recorded in 15 years.

Delhi breathes a little easier: AQI improves to 221, remains in 'poor' category; GRAP IV revoked

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on Wednesday (December 24) revoked stringent pollution restrictions in the national capital after Delhi’s air quality improved from the ‘severe’ to the ‘poor’ category. The city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 271 on Wednesday (December 24), a sharp drop from 412 recorded a day earlier. Explaining the decision, the pollution watchdog said weather conditions played a key role in the improvement. Strong winds and favourable meteorological factors helped disperse pollutants, leading to better air quality across the region. In an official statement, the CAQM said the Sub-Committee on the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) reviewed the latest air quality data and forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and IITM during its meeting. The panel noted that Delhi’s AQI had improved significantly since the previous night, settling in the ‘poor’ category on December 24, 2025. Also Read: Unnao rape survivor’s mother manhandled during protest; ‘Dead society’, says Rahul However, the agency cautioned that the relief may be temporary.
